ach of our perspectives has helped us to become who we are, who we have always wanted to be and who we will become. Whether we started out as sandboxers or as anxious freshmen, we looked at graduation as though it were a distant point on the horizon. Over the years, we have each developed a unique perspective. Perhaps our perspective has been from the classroom reaching our own academic goals, or from center stage looking at the audience through the dazzling lights, or on the athletic field trying to score a winning goal for the team. After eighteen years of constant efforts, our perspectives have widened!

Amidst an absolute sea of stress, tension, pressure, expectations, and all (or at least it seemed so) other modes of destroying our sanity, there is Mrs. Ulbrich, Kind

of like an island. Whether she is busy engraving a scarlet "A" on the minds of

students, or in the classroom carefullg guiding a discussion on race as it relates to Huckleberry Finn, or even piecing together an admissions package for yet another

college, Mrs. Ulbrich has a profound effect on us all. Day after day. she effortlessly embodies the educational ideal of the teacher interested solely in the luell-belng of

her students.

English teacher, college counselor, sports spectator, theater vieiver, constant

learner; Mrs. Ulbrich has a penchant for seizing the day. Her good humor.

complemented by her nurturing character, endears her to every member of this year’s senior class. When, at the close of our junior year, the school announced that Mrs. Ulbrich would be vacating her post as a teacher of English and History to

become college counselor, we, the class of 1999. turned solemn faces and conciliatory

words to the class of 2000 that they would miss out on such a fine teacher. But simultaneously, we couldn't help but smile inwardly at our own good fortune.

With Mrs. Ulbrich’s effort and thought always focused on the students, how could we not return the favor? Dedicating its yearbook to Mrs. Ulbrich, the Class of

1999 sincerely thanks her for the positive influence she has had on each of our lives.

Graham- Well I guess I can only say a couple of words to describe our years together and they are- Dance party, breaking it down, pants, BNL, parties, and of course Homecoming. Thanks for always being there to chill with. No one has had as much fun as you and I. Justin- When I first met you I always thought you were a little silly, but over the past few years we have become close friends. So keep in touch. Just remember the fun times. Brackett-1 will always remember second period trips, lunches and also all the other great times together. Jason- It's been phat hanging with you for the past couple of years. I've been attending Bancroft School since kindergarten, and now I'm shocked to find myself in my graduating year. I don't expect to recall every moment of my academic career, but my encounters with my family, peers, and teachers during this time have left an indelible mark upon my life. Even though our shared memories will fade, their influence on us is forever: where we have been will play a large part in where we are going.

I feel obligated to thank all the authors that are of significance to me. especially Noam Chomsky and. most Importantly. Robert Anton Wilson. These writers changed my world by changing the way I think about it. I am also appreciative of all the underground electronic musicians and DJs who unknowingly labored on the soundtrack to my life. The Future Sound of London. Orbital, Cosmosis. and the other artists currently important to me have forever altered the progression of my musical interests and potential career.

Students from St. Genevieve in Meaux, France visited Bancroft for two weeks in October, staying with host families, touring New England and spending a couple of days on campus. During March vacation, Bancroft students reconnected with their French friends in Meaux.

Hello. My name is Alexandre Lebel and I’m coming from France. This year in America was a wonderful experience and I will never forget it! 1 stayed with two different families, the Tamases and the Yoods. and I thank them for everything that they did for me! During the fall, I played soccer on the J.V. team and I had a lot of fun. My coach and teammates were really nice and I learned a lot of vocabulary with them (not only good words!!!). During this year I took U.S. History with Mr. Heavey, and 1 want to thank him a lot for always being nice to me and considering me as a real American student!!! I also learned a lot about the American authors, thank you Mr. White. 1 also learned a lot with my photography class, thank you Mr. Dec. All my special thanks to Mr. Mathieu, Miss Kennedy, Mrs. Puccio, Mrs. Foulke, Mr. Pollock, Mr. Salit, Mrs. Pearson, and all the students and teachers that made me feel good during this year! I think that America is the best country in the world and 1 really wish I were American!!!

In Bancroft class I’m sure I have improved my English and I hope I have become good enough to explain my thoughts and my thanks.

I would like to say “thank you’’ to all the Bancroft School teachers and to all the students for their help. I was surprised by the American teaching organization and I think it’s really easier to learn in this system than in the French one.

I was surprised by Massachusetts state because I have never seen so much snow and ice in one month. I was also impressed by the American organization to remove snow and ice from all the streets.

CLASS

The first day of school begins the waiting period for one of the most anticipated days of thi year, Mountain Day. As the first fire alarm rings everyone thinks, “Tomorrow must be Mountaii Day.” This year, however, there was no fire alarm; instead, our announcement came when Studen Council President, Cy Ahalt, drove his Blazer through the courtyard during lunch, while Activitiej Board Chair, Chris Vazquez, sat atop the roof, hollering through a bullhorn. Mountain Day marks the commencement of the annual series of class competitions among all four classes. With Mr Enlow at the helm, the ‘Race across Space’ begins the four-way fight to gain the lead after the firs f day’s festivities. Other Mountain Day activities include Lord of the Rings, the dance-a-thon volleyball and the drama presentations. The class competitions continue throughout the year a; Halloween, before Holiday Break, during Winter Carnival in February and late into the spring.

Pumpkin carving, apple bobbing and the pie eating contest combine with dressing up and the Senior Haunted House to encompass the Halloween activities. Before Winter Break, both holiday decorating and the wreath toss increase holiday cheer. Ice sculpting, snow football, volleyball and 1 sledding kick off Winter Carnival. Ultimate Frisbee, kickball, egg toss and tug-of-war conclude the year’s competitions. Class competitions spark enthusiasm in each class and encourage both unity and teamwork among the classes as they battle for victory and for the honor of having their name engraved on the plaque outside of Mrs. Puccio’s office. ~ Christine Feldt & Alycia Piontkowski

Bancroft dances vary from formals such as the Junior-Senior Prom to regular dances on Fridays such as the senior rejection dance. This year we started out with a regular dance, "StarStruk," sponsored by the Powder and Wig club. In October the Activities Board successfully sponsored the first semi-formal dance of the year, '98 Homecoming.

Following Hurricane Mitch, the school supported "Winter Hawkins" to raise money for the victims of that catastrophic event. After thorough preparation the Yearbook took the responsibility of sponsoring the annual "Mardi Gras" dance as a fundraiser to defray the cost of the yearbooks.

Students enjoy these dances because they diminish pe stress of studying and because they have always been fun. As an alternative to an overstressing academics, students engage in many activities at school. With the helpful guidance of faculty and student leaders, groups and clubs flourish as the importance of a well balanced school day becomes clear. STUDENT COUNCIL

Student Council had an exhilarating year in 1998-99. The squad established a thii r branch to student government in the form of a Disciplinary Committee that will gi\ students a voice in the disciplinary process. They then spent several weeks working t grant e-mail privileges to all Upper School students. Responding to a large demand b the student body, the Council, headed in this endeavor by Junior Government Whi Win Rumi, then drafted a Comprehensive Flag Care Proposal prompting thi administration to adhere to federal law in its flag care policy. After that large victory the group of ten fine student legislators moved to even bigger things, reviewing th Student Government Constitution, particularly the leadership policy, and touching o the “Locker in Fuller” issue...all in the second half of the year. Those in the know c student government count this year as a major success, a success that was largely du to the aid of faculty advisers Mr. Heavey and Ms. Martin, as well as the constar attention and tireless efforts of Mr. Pollock and Mrs. Welch. The Council wishes nex year’s regime good luck.

A splendid array of teachers and ministrators provides a foundation for academic superiority within central Massachusetts, ell then, since all of the students learn a lot, do they ever have fun? Sure they do, lots of it. le Upper School Activities Board serves as a paramount vehicle for the organization of the creational events enjoyed by our scholars. As the chairman of the exquisite board, I see the sparations and organization needed to please two hundred plus high school students. Amnesty International is a worldwide organization dedicated to the protection of universal human rights. The main focus of Amnesty's campaign is to free all prisoners of conscience; these are people who have been detained anywhere for their beliefs or hecause of their ethnic origin, sex. color, language, national or social origin, economic status, or hirth status. Amnesty also works to ensure fair and prompt trials for politicaI prisoners, abolish the death penalty, torture and other cruel treatment of prisoners, and to end extra judicial executions and “disappearances.” This year Bancroft’s extension of Amnesty International has taken many strides in raising awareness in our community, thanks to the help of dedicated students. We are working hard to succeed in organizing beneficial events through numerous letter writing campaigns, fundraisers, and presentations. We would like to thank everyone who has supported the revival of this club, and we encourage you to continue focusing your attention in our direction.

The Admissions process at Bancroft is not simple. Many steps go into a student's decision to attend Bancroft and Bancroft's decision to accept that student. The day that prospective students spend at Bancroft to help them make their decision is pertinent to the process. Without the Hosts Club, these days would not be possible.

Students, primarily from the freshman and sophomore classes who are members of the Hosts Club, are matched with a prospective student for a day. The prospective student spends a day in Bancroft classes. We hope that each and every visitor to the Bancroft Upper School leaves with a good impression of the school and a new friend.

The Blue Moon Staff had a fun year assembling Perspectives. The staff spent many afternoons in the Tech Cente working hard to meet deadlines. This year, the Canteen started in debt from last year's expenses. Within the last quarter, we were out of debt, and quickly making money.

This Thanksgiving, we donated turkeys to poor families, and at Christmas, we donated money to a charity organization. We continue to provide a wide selection of sweets, chips, and beverages for the student body's and faculty's enjoyment. Thanks for your support and stay hungry.

This year the Intramural Football Club kicked off its second season. With nine teams, more tha fifty participants, and a nine-game schedule, the season looked hopeful. This year the Math Team is involved with more activities than ever before. Along with participation in the Worcester County Math League and national tests, such as the American High School Mathematics Exam, the team has signed up for a new activity. The Mandelbrot Competition. The Math Team has been growing steadily in number and enthusiasm, and its goal is to encourage mathematics, while at the same time having fun.

The Prom Committee has been busy planning this year’s prom, which will be held at the Sterling Country Club. For a fundraiser, we will be having a service auction where members of the senior class will donate their services to underclassmen. We hope that this auction will help raise money for the DJ, decorations, caterers and other necessities. We hope that this year’s prom will be a night of magic and that all who attend will have a great time.

We had a > successful car wash on Homecoming, leaving many sparkling cars and wads of money in our pockets. We look forward to many activities in the La winter and spring, such as a ski trip, sledding and skating, an evening at the Omni Theater in Boston and a blood drive. /ell. how cool was the StarStruk Dance?! Powder and Wig started the year off with a bang with the first ever jldoor dance at Bancroft School. It provided a job for every member of the club and everyone played a part |i the success of the dance. Under the stars, with the StarLite Cafe, moon shaped lights and awesome lighting

^uipment from Theatrix made the dance visually astounding. It went incredibly well and boasted a whopping tendance of over 200 people!! And. the neighbors loved it!

'pen Myke Nite ran the longest ever (we had to wake Mrs. Hench up at the end) with a wide range of ibulous acts. Jeff Lacouture's emceeing was superb and kept the audience laughing. The Board's parodie.s of

Members of the Social Concerns Club help many individuals anc organizations in need. Our projects have included the adoption of child from South America, the March of Dimes Walk, the Heifei Project, the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk and others. During the fall, the club gathered food for the Worcester County Food Bank. For the holiday season, we collected Toys for Teens and volunteered our time distributing gifts. All of our members are special people for all of the work that they do. Good luck to the departing seniors and we look forward to seeing the rest of you next year.

TaLle de Frangais La Table de Frangais has enjoyed a very successful year, with great attendance and accomplishment of many of our goals. We met every “B” day to speak in French over lunch.

They learn invaluable lessons from competition and form strong bonds with coaches and j teammates. How to step up to a tough I opponent, how to focus on the task at I hand and how to work with a team are a I few practical skills that Bancroft athletes I practice to perfection. With such skills E Bancroft athletes contribute to the spirit of competition.

The relationships formed with teammates and coaches are unique and special; they share moments of great insight. During competition true I personalities surface; the good, the bad, 9 the brave and the fearful are exposed.

The Men’s Varsity Soccer Team finished a troubled season as semifinalists in the NEPSAC Class D Tournament, losing to Williams 1-0 in a game that could have gone either way. The team counted on strong defense, as evidenced in a close match with Beaver Country Day, the Class C Champions, that almost resulted in a 0-0 tie. But they also had a formidable scoring force as they had the second ranked striker in the league and won important games against Pingree and Wheeler with timely goals late in the game. The team thanks Coaches Enlow and Whitelaw for an enjoyable year.

Women’s Soccer finished undefeated in the regular season for the second year in a row and league champions for the third year in a row. Our record for the past three seasons is presently 52/0/2 (WOW). Moving up a class from last year, hoping for better competition, we entered the class “B” N.E.P.S.A.C. Tournament. Unfortunately, we lost in the semi-finals in a shoot-out. We feel that the team gained strength from this loss, which they will carry with them into next year’s season.

This year’s team had its fair share of physical problems, including a dislocated shoulder, sprained ankles, pulled muscles, various back problems, and not-to-forget appendicitis, mono and a “mystery surgery.’’ Despite these setbacks, our confidence and positivity remained unshattered.

We hope the team next year will have as much fun and success as we have had. We wish next year’s team the best of luck.

Record: The 1998 Bancroft Field Hockey Team was led by senior tri-captains Aimee Green, Courtney JcKallagat and Chelsea Seale. The team had eleven returning players from the 1997 EIL Championship team and gained depth from seven new players. The success of the season was due to le camaraderie of the team. The team achieved its number one goal for the season—repeating as EIL lhampions.

I Highlights from the season consisted of avenging last year’s two losses to Rivers with a 4-0 ^ctory. We beat both Winsor and Pingree for the first time in four years with scores of 1-0 and 2-1. jrith Elie Cahill leading the team in scoring, fellow forwards Chelsea Seale, Alison Stuart and Izzy idrowley provided the rest of the offensive spark the team needed. With Steph D-C taking command U* the midfield and Kelly McKallagat and Sara Langer giving added support, the team wa.s well on its »^ay. Great team work in the defensive end by Vickie Radin, Christine Holder and Courtney JcKallagat and by Katie Meyer and Aimee Green in goal kept opposing teams frustrated. With ] anasi Chitre and Katherine Radin on the forward line, Naomi Sleeper, Polly Alfred and Sara Yood i the midfield and Liza Michie in the goal, depth on the bench added to the success of this team. The 1am only allowed ten goals in twenty games. After a 2-0 victory over MacDuffie, the team made its Kiy to the semi-finals of the NEPSAC Championships.

Thanks to the parents for continued support. (The Newton post-game sprints and the spread lat we had at the EIL invitational—they know why we play field hockey.) And thanks to the Guys' brsity Field Hockey Team, co-captains Abe Stein and Tucker Ruderman, and to cross country for all te noise and support. When all was said and done, we had proven that “We had won something yet.

GIRLS: Due to loss of runners this year we had a lot of questions as to the possibilities of the season.

We kept veteran runners Sam Welch. Stephanie Galica, Emily Athy, and Carolyn Whitten from last year’s top seven, but we had to fill many holes. Fortunately, freshman Caitlin McDonough, sophomore Kate Sliwoski, and junior Mary Perrin, all in their first years of running, filled out the scoring group. After a close defeat at Pingree, we began to work together, and everyone gained experience from hard practices. Our work paid off when we beat Pingree 26-31 on our home course.

'We won every other league meet for the rest of our season to clinch the Co-Championship title. On :October 31st, at Berwick, we won our third consecutive League Championship Meet. Sam Welch j personally won this meet for the second year in a row. We had Caitlin McDonough, Sam Welch, and [Stephanie Galica on the league's All Star Team. Next year our top seven squad will be returning, so 1999 looks very promising.

BOYS: This year proved to be a building year. After losing eight seniors from last year's championship team, this year’s squad looked to be distant from any title contention. With the addition of Matt “Bull Run" Brady, Tim Brady, John "Action Jackson” Finn. Jon Ursprung, Nate "Assistant Head Coach” Saperia, Zack Lewis, Ben Greenberg. Achyut "Help Me My Ankle Feels Gimpy” Phadke, and Colin Probert. to previous runners Nate Senge and Win Rumi, the boys* team had some depth. After a narrow defeat from LCA, Bancroft began a streak when it took out Pingree and Landmark, and then proceeded to embarrass LCA. Berwick, with the strongest lineup the school has .seen in some time, soundly beat Bancroft. The year closed on Halloween with the EIL race at Berwick. Out of 80 runners. Rumi scored a fourth place finish, and Senge out-sprinted his archnemesis from Landmark to earn sixth place. These two finishes solidified Rumi and Senge's All Star r, Status in the EIL as #4 and #5. We also took home a second place trophy in the EIL meet, despite the absence of both Brady boys. In the words of the Air Force, we “Aim High” for next year, hoping to javoid similar civil war casualties while at the same time maintaining a steady consumption of Dr. Pepper. ~ Win Rumi and Nate Senge

After losing our captain, our number 3 player, and our number 4 player to last year’s graduation, the Bancroft Varsity Golf Team did not have high hope,s for success.

With only two remaining players, we faced the task of finding new and young talent to fill our three open spots. We found Tony Belanger, Chuck Tingue, and Matt Rosales.

Tony with his incredible length. Chuck with his on-target Locator putter, and Matt with his stunning accuracy have helped us reach our final record. Another new addition to the team, Jason Olsen, has been producing as our occasional number six spot. This year’s captain and number one player, Graham Binder, and our irreplaceable number two player, Lindsay Gerhardt, have also done great things to contribute to Bancroft’s success. Although we did not win the league this year, we were able to place second in the league tournament and finished with a respectable 4-3 record.

After a lapse of a year, Bancroft Men's Varsity Basketball was proud to bring the E.I.L. banner back to the dog pound. A rocky start with multiple losses to non-league opponents seemed to predict another poor season for the Bulldogs. However, after three rousing victories in one week against Beaver, Landmark and Chapel Hill, the team managed to end the season with an E.I.L. championship and a record of 13-8. We then headed into the N.E.P.S.A.C. tournament.

Seniors, Captain Cyrus Ahalt, Captain Jason Olsen, Captain Abe Stein, Vilas Patwardhan, Andrew Schaeffer, Jon Dahlquist, Tim Dore and Ethan Dorr, left their mark on the program, and with the guidance of Assistant Coach Paul Salit and Head Coach Mark O’Brien, left a championship banner on the wall.

The future program is safe in the hands of junior All-Star Mike Surabian, sophomore Matt Rosales, and freshmen Josh Lubatkin and Larry Atupem, although the eight seniors will be missed.

It was a strong season for the Bulldogs, bringing the championship back home to Bancroft, where it belongs.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Women’s Varsity Basketball had a remarkable season, despite what our record says at 10-12. We had)

great bonding experience in Philadelphia at the George School Tournament, returning as a unit rather than ; individuals. After placing third in the tournament, our confidence was high and we knew that we were a tea.

After starling strong, our team was plagued with injuries that resulted in frustrating losses to Dani

Hall. Pingree. Berwick and Concord. We played well at the Kingswood-Oxford Tournament and placed thir again. Highlights of our season (and there were many) included: our first league game of the season again'

Concord when Julie made the winning basket with two seconds left in the game. Jill’s amazing game again*'

Wheeler (her double-double), the great team effort to blow out Worcester Academy, the Beaver game, i which we came back from a thirteen point deficit to defeat them by nine points, Danielle scoring her caree lOOOth point on her birthday (she later broke the school record) and. finally, the seniors' last home game

During the E.I.L. Invitational we crushed Rivers 50-31, but unfortunately, later in the day, lost a hard fough

game to Concord Academy, which ended our season. Our four seniors will be greatly missed, but we an confident that the remaining players and the players to come will pick up the slack.

Left to right: John Tumolo, dove Wright, Justin Lesniewski, Dave Yood, Coach Mark Teutsch The team started out feeling that this would be a rebuilding year. No one knew how true this would be. Having lost five seniors, two of whom qualified for the New England Tournament, the team was left with a relatively small number of wrestlers with the oldest wrestler being a junior. The year finished with the team having four wrestlers. But, as Coach McDermott says, even though we have a lack of numbers, if the forfeits are taken away, Bancroft is a truly formidable opponent. This is evident through Bancroft's match at LCA. Though the final match score suggested that Bancroft had been blown away, we actually won three out of our four matches against LCA. In the league tournament David Yood wrestled well, in perhaps the toughest weight division in the league, 125 lbs. John Tumolo placed fourth at 215 lbs.

Kurt Lesniewski placed third in 103 lbs., and Justin Lesniewski finished first in 119 lbs. The team hopes to build on these stronga performances and create a stronger, larger team for the future.

Although the weather during the 1998-1999 ski season did not alway cooperate, the season was still undoubtedly successful. With the help o Coach Jane Gerhardt and our mountain coach, Ken, we have learned t( work as a coed team and to improve our skills. Whether we are makinj short, quick “edge to edge” turns for Slalom, or long curvy, exaggeratec turns for Giant Slalom, our times have decreased significantly. As w( approach the end of the season, we now stand in second place in the league overall, boy.s and girls combined. It has been a fun and successful season and we are looking forward to next season, bringing us plenty of snow anc faster times down the race course!

This year, the Varsity Volleyball team experienced significar improvement. After losing five of last year's six starters and wit only three returning players, the team did not know what to expec, from the season. However, the combination of good coaching, hard work and talented freshmen as well as new players proveij otherwise. We finished the season 8-4, second in the E.I.L. Maureei and Mia were recognized as All-Stars, and Dena and Emily wen awarded honorable mention standing. We beat challenging teams fo the first time in team history and surprised many of our opponents We also made the E.I.L. tournament as the fourth seed and had i great day of playing. Looking at the 1998-99 school year in perspective will surely remind many of us what a : I busy, historical and memorable year it has been.

I Many notable changes occurred at Bancroft School this year. Bruce Pollock successfully I completed his first year as the Head of the Upper School. With the unexpected departure of Mr. * Sharp this fall, a thorough search for a new headmaster immediately commenced. Mr. Gauthier k and Mr. Garfield filled the void for the rest of the year by serving as interim headmasters. In I February, the Board of Trustees announced that Scott Reisinger had been appointed as the next j headmaster, starting July of 1999. !

William Jefferson Clinton became the first president of the United States to be impeached j since Andrew Johnson in 1868. Two of four articles of impeachment, perjury and obstruction of justice, were passed by the House of Representatives. Although a lengthy Senate trial followed, ■ Clinton was not removed from office. Details of Clinton’s “encounters” with Monica Lewinsky, a I young White House intern, were released on the Internet by Special Prosecutor Kenneth Starr.

Besides our government, many changes have also occurred in the sports world. In the NBA, players, coaches and owners could not compromise on salary issues, which caused the league to cancel over 900 professional basketball games. The Chicago Bulls also lost a phenomenal player with the retirement of basketball great, Michael Jordan. In major league baseball, there was a heated race for the new home run king, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa were at the top of the list, with McGwire setting a new record of 70 home runs in one season.

Moreover, former pro WWF wrestler Jesse Ventura became governor of Minnesota.

John Glenn flew into space for the second time in his life at age 77, becoming the oldest astronaut to date. Hurricane Mitch tore through Central America, leaving many buildings devastated and many people homeless. Even here at Bancroft, we raised money to support the relief fund. Threats of war, instability in Bosnia and unrest in the Middle East have mounted tension in the international community. As 1999 begins to unfold, Americans anticipate the coming of a new millennium. The Y2K crisis brings concern that much of our present technology will cease to function.

The world saw the passing of several Hollywood legends, athletic heroes and other influential figures, such as Florence Griffith Joyner, Linda McCartney, Phil Hartman, Dr, Spock, Shari Lewis, George Wallace, Frank Sinatra and Gene Siskel. Lauryn Hill and the Dave Matthews Band topped music charts, while long time band Aerosmith had a number one hit with I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing. Hot teen shows like Dawson’s Creek and Felicity caused the WB’s ratings to soar. NBC said goodbye to ER’s Dr. Ross. The big screen has also produced several blockbuster hits this year, including Saving Private Ryan, Armageddon and The Truman Show.

Throughout the past year, many of our views of the world and of our school have changed. With each new day comes a new perspective.
