Kaleidoscope (Ka-lei-do-scope): An instrument containing loose bits of colored glass between two flat plates and two plain mirrors so placed that changes of position of the bits of glass are reflected in an endless variety of patterns. Four years ago the class of 1996 met at Camp Harrington as separate pieces of glass. Each individual had a pattern, a distinct design of his or her own. The colors of theater buffs, soccer midfielders, Star Wars fanatics, Mountain Dew drinkers, and environmental activists shone through. Thrown together in the collage of the new freshman class, these distinct patterns molded into one brilliant kaleidoscope, linking each individual sparkle with the group shine. That September day, the class of 1996 embarked upon an obstacle course, which led about fifty nervous, self-conscious freshman through the "spider web," over the towering wall, and into the unfamiliar, overwhelming territory of the Upper School. This journey, this unimaginable adventure, mixed the thousands of original pieces into one ever-changing, ever-learning, and ever-lasting pattern -- The Class of 1996.

Kaleidoscope To an outsider looking in at the Bancroft community, he/she would see the typical high school scene. Students work diligently towards the ultimate goal of college.

Teachers experiment with active learning. All aspects of the family take their share of their job to the fullest.

Those of us within the community, however, know that being at Bancroft is as much about exam grades, pop quizzes, and research papers as it is about involvement in the school musical Annie Get Your Gun, learning to accept local and national differences in a Juntos assembly, and cheering at a basketball game. During X block, students can be found anywhere--in the new technology center either typing a paper or finishing a newspaper article, in the canteen enjoying a candy bar and hanging out with friends, in an empty classroom sharing questions and confusions with a teacher about a math problem.

All the pieces of personalities fit together into a changing, striving, growing Bancroft community. With new awarenesses of other people's feelings, other culture's languages, other changes in the world, students, faculty, and essentials emerge from school with a sense of respect for themselves and their home-Bancroft.

KALEIDOSCOPE The 1995-1996 school year burst onto the scene with both new events, such as the Pajama Jammy Jam, and traditional events like Mountain Day and the Buddy Program. This year, school spirit and enthusiasm for school activities soared.

The Homecoming dance, with a new formal setting in the Blue Gym enhanced by candles, flowers, and tablecloths, had the highest attendance in ten years.

Bowling Bonanza matched teams of friends competing for the year's title. The class of 1996 took it home by solidifying their place in Bancroft's bowling history for the last time.

As always, clubs are an essential part of Bancroft activities - new clubs like Juntos and Jazz Ensemble provided opportunities for a variety of students to find an interest and foster it. As the Outing Club traveled to Okemo Mountain for an exciting weekend of skiing and fun, as the Social Concerns club sponsored a foster child, and as the Newspaper shelled out issue after issue, the Bancroft its affected community touched the members, community outside of the school, and grew to its potential.

An Exhibit of Class Spirit Hey fly gents and ladies! Thanks to you the class competitions have rocked house this year! We have had a blast together at Mountain Day, the Halloween Comps, and all during Winter Carnival Week. With chanting, rabid spectators from all classes, the competitions have become everyone's favorite stress release. The Winter Carnival week turned into an all-out exhibit of class spirit as each class showed excellence. After all, who couldn't enjoy snow football followed by mass consumption of donuts and a strange but yummy concoction named hot chocolate? The basketball portion featured Junior domination, the return of Josh Shriber to Bulldog Basketball, and even an errant pass into the groin area. After the many weeks of competitions, the scores were tallied... The Seniors and Juniors were deadlocked in first place, with the Sophomores and Freshmen within striking distance. With the outcome uncertain, the Competitions are going to provide an interesting spring season! Be there for the conclusion!

Upper School Free Periods...

In every community there is a hierarchy. At Bancroft,free periods loom at the top of that hierarchy. Most students schedule their weeks according to their free periods.

Students make sure that they will be able to fully enjoy this time that they have counted down for. Frees are idolized as a time to be spent away from teachers, away from authority, away from the stress of deadlines. While some lucky Juniors and Seniors can leave campus with their cars and privileges, of course, others opt to spend this time hanging out in the Student Commons,exercising in the new weight room,or (willingly) receiving extra help from teachers. This sacred time provides the perfect opportunity to catch up, keep up, or get ahead. It all depends on how you choose to use the time. In conclusion, free periods are good, well-liked, and a necessity.

Under our new guidelines the Student Council set out to address student concerns to the faculty and administration. This first year has witnessed a rise in student empowerment,as well as a mutual trust between students and faculty. In Council, we have discussed such issues as freshman acceptance into the Upper School, our detention system,and ways to deter theft. We have created a new dress code,a new Walkman policy, and have straightened out our tardy policy. The Student Council accomplished many feats, but not without hard work from the council members,our advisors, and the student body as a whole. The purpose of Bancroft School's Student Council is to keep an open line of communication between the student body, the student government, the faculty, and the administration. The '95-'96 school year has proved to be a successful one.

Boom batta, Activities Board got fatta! We have been having a crazy good year thanks to you! Dances have come back from the dead, clubs are doing amazing things and Bowling Bonanza blew up! The Bancroft student body deserves and recieves a ton of credit for their participation in our events.

efteutuA The Upper School Chorus is a small group of dedicated students, driven by a love for music and an interest in performing. Meeting twice a week with faculty advisor/pianist Ms.Pappas, we select and prepare music for our school concerts. Much of the first two quarters was dedicated to preparing for our Holiday Assembly. Focusing on the theme of "peace," songs ranging from Bach's "Because All Men are Brothers" to John Lennon's "Imagine" were selected for the concert. We incorporated history into the performance by singing "The Song of Peace," which was sung by Yitzhak Rabin just hours before his assasination.

The second half of the year will find the chorus at a metamorphic stage. To increase student interest by satisfying a growing desire to perform more Broadway musical selections, the club is expanding into a Cabaret. For our Spring Concert,students will choreograph, prepare, and sing solos, duets, and chorus numbers from Broadway shows. Depending on the success of the concert, we will try to incorporate the Cabaret Club into the Performing Arts department at Bancroft in years to come.

The purpose of Amnesty International is to free people whose rights are being violated. The members of Amnesty, with the oversight of our advisor Mr. Trocchio, write letters to the heads of various countries, including the President of the United States, in order to bring the violation of rights to their attention.

During this school year, the Amnesty club at Bancroft has received confirmation of the release of thirty political prisoners.

This club is very effective, but only when people write letters.

One of the highlights of this year was when ten members of the club attended a moving candlelight vigil in Boston.

The Host Committee, under the direction of Mr. Gielow, Mrs. Carey, and Mrs. Enman, offers prospective students an opportunity to visit the Upper School with student hosts. It gives students a chance to represent their school and play an integral role in the admissions process. This year was a great one, thanks to the helpful and enthusiastic Tour Guides pictured here. Having the most number of students this club has ever had, tours ran smoothly even during our most hectic weeks. The Open House, at which the Tour Guides convinced prospective parents that Bancroft was the school for them, showed off the school's new appearance, complete with new gymnasium and Upper School wing, the Stoddard Center. Our great numbers made sure we were never at a loss for a cheerful representative of the Bancroft Community.

The Buddy Program

The Buddy Program serves to incorporate and welcome freshmen,foreign students, and all other newcomers to the Bancroft Upper School.

Dedicated seniors Melissa Cohen, Lara Apelian, and Ashley Houston began planning activities for the 1995-1996 school year in the spring of '95.

Over one hundred and twenty students participated in a variety of "getting-to-know-you" activities over a period of three months. Make your own sundaes, Name That Tune, and pizza lunches were among the highlights of the program. These informal gatherings helped to ease the transition for the new students and to foster strong friendships between big and little buddies.

Canteen We've had a great year at the Canteen. With the new facilities this year, the question was raised whether or not to continue this organization.

The students' will prevailed, however, ensuring that future classes will not know hunger or unquenched thirst as they roam the halls on break.

Conveniently located inside the new Student Common, our warm smiles welcome students at almost every break. Students can always rely on the Canteen, the place where everybody knows their name. As in past years, all of our profits had been donated to charities which have been located for us by our faculty advisor, Mrs. Webb.

Mrs. Webb has literally kept the Canteen going, year after year. She ensures that the soda is ordered on time, balances our budget, and keeps her office open for quick assistance with every problem we encounter.

CARE

The CARE program has concluded another succesful year at Bancroft. The CARE program continues to devote its full effort in working with developmentally delayed children. This year, the program introduced new activities with great success. Among our most successful activities was the costumed candy hunt for Halloween. Other Gym activities included soccer, floor hockey, scooters, and the playground. Art focused upon seasonal themes when we made waxed leaves and hand turkeys. 1 IORVONS After seven fun-filled weeks of rehearsing, bonding and laughter, the Horizons troupe of ten techies and ten actors performed its original play The Treasure Hunt, written by co-heads Lisa D'Andrea and Laura Apostolou. Each Saturday morning started with improvisational acting games, followed by preparation for the big day.

With the help of the newly appointed advisor Mrs. Puccio and long-time teacher Mary Pantano, the weeks of anticipation, excitement and growth culminated in the well-received production in front of proud parents and eager CARE members.

DEBATE CLUB This year's Debate Club, under the leadership of Shveta Sinha and Lee Tucker, is working hard to get back on track.

With an excellent turnout of eager and hard-working members, the club is steadily moving ahead. This year, the members were fortunate to have guest speakers (alumni who were members of the club), come to talk about the basics of debating; they even offered some useful techniques on public speaking.

With persistent fund-raising efforts, the club worked hard to build up its treasury, successfully raising enough to host Kingswood-Oxford School in a debate on February 11th. In February, the club also began work on a state-wide mocktrial tournament. Ultimately, the club's goal is to get enough experience and to raise enough money to participate in the annual McGill University Tournament next year in Montreal.

The future of the Debate Club is looking bright.

Although we had a small group, Handbells was still able to put on performances at the Holiday Assembly and during Chiaroscuro, as well as an off-campus performance at Tower Hill Botanic Garden, where we were accompanied by the Middle School Chorus.

Everyone was very good about showing up each week to rehearse, even when we did not have enough people to play all the parts. In future years, we hope to get more people interested and to be able to play more complicated pieces.

After two previous years of existence, the Jazz Ensemble became an official club this fall.

Under the supervision of trumpeter Tony D'Rveni and the leadership of senior Flmol Sharma, the band rose to the high expectations of the Bancroft community. Presenting jazz as more than just an esoteric and respectable art-form, the ensemble continued to famqiarize students, teachers, and administrators with the music.

The first few rehearsals suggested a grim year for the ensemble, as no true drummer emerged. But through their dedication, cooperation, and talent, juniors Shveta Sinha and Sarah Wolfman-Robichaud quickly learned to play the drums, providing the band with two drummer/pianists. With a substantial addition of underclassmen, the band formed a complete section of innovative horn players. The addition of occasional vocals and the wide array of skillful soloists increased the band's versatility on songs like George Gershwin's "Summertime."

After a brillant first performance at the Holiday Assembly, the jazz band continued to share with the Upper School community its latin, funk, and blues. `mezcla' of

Always dedicated to helping the Student Body, Peer Group had a successful year. Membership was up and under the leadership of Alyssa, Carolyn and Ashley, the club was very productive, sometimes generating too many ideas to handle. We helped teach the Lower School about friendship, the Middle School about eating disorders and the Upper School about smoking. And, we managed to have a good time and a few laughs as we went along. All in all, this club had a great year. We will miss our seniors next year, but we know Emily and Jessye will do a great job as the new club leaders. We'd especially like to thank Mr. Belanger and Miss Macomber, both of them did a great job in counseling and helping this busy and sometimes scattered club. And, we also owe a big thanks to all our members, who worked very hard to make Peer Group the wonderful club that it has become!

Though whoever turns on and off the great faucet in the sky seemed set on ruining our plans, the year has been a success so far! In September a group took in the rolling colors of the land from Mount Monadnock's summit. In November three of the heartiest club members mountain biked through trails in Rutland with Mrs. Barter. The February ski trip tested the mettle of nineteen BOSCers as they braved the frigid cold and the third annual showing of "The Army of Darkness." Thanks to the generosity of the Berthiaumes it was an exciting weekend of perfect ski conditions at Okemo.

While enjoying the outdoors, the club also works to protect it. In November a group painted storm drains in a neighborhood near Bancroft with the message "Don't Dump/Drains to Indian Lake." By the end of the year we will all have had sticky fingers from sorting recyclables!

Hiking trips, Earth Day activities, and a possible paintball outing will continue to provide challenge, excitement, and change as the year continues!

The Bancroft Beacon The Bancroft Beacon had a successful year in 1995-96, its second year of publication. Under the leadership of Faculty Sponsors Russ Enlow and Bob Stein, Editorin-Chief Carter Ruml, Features Editor Lydia Stein, Sports Editor Joe Rosales, Editor-at-Large Tom Goss, Layout Editors Ketan Vakil and David Sinofsky, and Senior Columnist Astrid Tsang, and with the help of Technical Consultant Renny Swan and Staff Reporters Sarah Wolfman-Robichaud, Ben Krefetz, Tom Mutti, Erron Titus, Ben Dobson, Dave Gise, Mayo Morgan, and Shveta Sinha, the Beacon had published six issues by January 31st and planned at least three more before turning the helm over to the 1996-1997 staff.

Truly, none of the issues could have been produced were it not for the efforts and support of people from all parts of the Bancroft community.

The financial support of the ParentFaculty Association and the Student Activities Fund was critical to our operations, as was the understanding and professionalism of Doug Sturgis of the IBA Print Shop, Millbury, who printed our circulation of roughly six hundred issues throughout the

year.

The Beacon hopes it succeeded in its goals of producing interesting and timely reporting on events in the school community and issues in the larger world. At its best, the paper became a forum for sharing views and ideas which affect our lives here at school together, hopefully always with a spirit of levity and good fun. The Sports Page was a great opportunity to help increase school spirit and support for our athletic teams.

Like the Student Government which it so often reported on, the 1995-96 Bancroft Beacon staff succeeded (we hope) in leaving Bancroft a stronger, kinder, more vibrant place than we found it. We are confident that the secure base we consolidated for the Beacon will continue to serve it well in years to come.

In short, it was a long haul, sometimes a rough one, but we're proud of what we accomplished.

For the entire 1995-96 Beacon staff, it's been an honor to do this job.

Juntos "Juntos," which means "together" in Spanish,explores the beautiful diversity and the histories of different cultures in the world, discovering these cultures through social activities within the group and through presentations to the rest of the Upper School. The 1995-96 club leaders, Lydia Stein and Lara Apelian, organized the first club presentation, which commemorated the 50th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki--by posting facts, citations, and questions about the bombings all around school, they encouraged students to determine their feelings towards America's actions in ending World War II. Hoping to experience different aspects of foreign cultures, the club members held a Foreign Films and Food Night at Lydia's house(Como Agua Para Chocolate!) and an Indian Food lunch at school during the first semester.

Although the first semester may have been a slow one for the Juntos Club, we came back strong in January with an interesting and informative presentation about 20th century leaders who have worked for peace. In February, we plan to present a journey through AfricanAmerican history to celebrate Black History Month;in March, we hope to give a presentation about the Chinese New Year. With many other possibilities for the spring, including a trip to Manhattan for a conference at the United Nations International School and a Mardi Gras festival at Bancroft, the club will continue to be active. The club will also continue to have a lot of fun (fun usually means food!), by holding further activities within the group.

We hope that in years to come,Bancroft students will continue to possess a curiosity about other cultures and a desire to understand and benefit from history. This club has proved a wonderful means through which to share this curiosity with other club members and with the rest of the Upper School.

SP RIT CLUB The Spirit Club continues to bring support to Bancroft Athletics.

Much of the shared success of the teams can be attributed to their fans, whose wild enthusiasm and devout attendence,(especially at Pingree games!), has propelled the Bulldogs to numerous victories, and this year, championships.

The club operates a year-round concession stand, selling food and drink to hungry patrons. In the fall, the club donated a portion of their profits to the medical fund of injured Boston University hockey player Travis Roy, a quadriplegic. They also arranged for Homecoming '95 T-shirts to be sold, though the occasion was rained out.

The Spirit Club would like to thank the Bancroft community for its continuous support of the teams.

Social Concerns The Social Concerns Committee, under the direction of Mrs. Rasnick, Eugene Shultz, and Theresa Nguyen, has continued the Bancroft tradition of service to the community. The club's activities have included the Heifer Project, in which students volunteer to muck the stalls or help with the animals, Halloween Happening,Teddy Bear Tea, Toys For Teens. Toys For Teens asks Bancroft students to donate a toy, such as a mix cassette tape or scrunchies. This activity has always been a great success!

Walk For Life, Very Special Arts, and the March of Dimes complete the clubs organized volunteering. For the first time, the Social Concerns Committee is sponsoring its own foster child from Colombia. To all of those in the committee and to those who have selflessly donated many hours to serve the community, Bancroft's and beyond, we thank you.

March crai..2/10/96 On February 10th there was an air of excitement as guests began arriving at Maxwell Silverman's for the second annual Winter Semi-Formal. The tedium of winter and the usual stress of a semi-formal melted as freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors came together for this one night. The theme of Mardi Gras brought new excitement, with masks and party favors, as well as a cornonation. Freshman Anthony Belanger and junior Kathryn Krock were dubbed king and queen of the Mardi Gras and led the entire group in a dance. The night was filled with laughter and fun and a good time was had by all.

The class of 1997 gave the Upper School a night that will never be forgotten.

If someone had asked me six months ago how I would start off 1996, being in America would not have been high on my list of considerations. Yet now, here we are in February and where am I? None other than America!

My time here has and will give me plenty of memories to take home: Bancroft basketball games, Mardi Gras, the play, and many others. It took awhile to adjust to not wearing a uniform, as I have to wear one in England. Would you believe me if I said it's not that bad?

Probably not. I know Christina and Lee disagree with me. Also to adjust to a different class schedule, was tough, but now class rotation, etc., seems perfectly normal!

Although my stay in Massachusetts has been relatively short (about eleven weeks), there has been plenty of time to visit many places, meet loads of people, and make new friends. Everyone at Bancroft has been really friendly and has made it easy for me to fit in as much as possible.

Finally to finish, I am really glad to have a chance to record my time here in the Bancroft Yearbook.

I have had an excellent time here.... so far! And it has been an experience I will not soon forget. Thank you, Bancroft.

f a singular unifying element exists within the Bancroft community,one would have to point to Bulldogs Athletics. Whether huddling together at a soccer game on a crisp October afternoon, or breathing in the electricity of the air during a Friday night basketball game,a visitor to the school would have little trouble locating a Bancroft student, as well as a faculty member or returning alumnus,at an athletic event. This year the Eastern Independent League's most dedicated fans were afforded new luxuries with new facilities, including locker rooms,a weight room,and a gymnasium. The fans were not disappointed, as both the boys' soccer team and the golf team captured league titles, and the girls' soccer team had a successful post-season. With the aid of the mascot,the Spirit Club, Athletic Director Mr.Kelley and a wonderful staff of coaches, Bulldog Athletics were propelled to a status of newfound prominence and pride.

CHAMPS AT LAST!!!

The Mens Varsity Soccer team ended its season in dramatic fashion by capturing sole possession of the Eastern Independent League championship title during the last game of the season. The last time a Bancroft Mens Varsity Soccer team won the EIL championship was 1984.

Going into the last game of the season Bancroft was 11-1-1 in the League,Pingree was 10-2-2, and Berwick was 9-3-1. Bancroft had to play Berwick,and with a win or a tie would win the EIL championship outright. With a loss Bancroft would be tied with Pingree for the League championship. Both teams played a generally good first half, although neither scored. In the second half, however, Berwick scored early and Bancroft struggled to get shots on goal. As the game neared an end it seemed more and more likely that Bancroft would have to settle for a tie for the league championship. But with two minutes remaining,on a free kick from just in front of half-field, Pete Paszkowski kicked the ball a long way up into the wind, which carried the ball to the goal and, with one hop,over the head of the goalie. The game ended in a 1-1 tie and Bancroft had captured its first EIL championship in eleven years.

Other highlights of the season included a victory over Pingree early in the season, a narrow 1-0 loss to Worcester Academy, a Class B school (Bancroft is a Class D school), and a clinch for a tie of the League championship with a victory over LCA.Bancroft participated in the NEPSAC Tournament,but lost in overtime to Tilton in the first round.

Senior striker Peter Paszkowski was named the Eastern League's most valuable player. He also shared team MVP honors with junior sweeper Ben Dore. Both were named Eastern League All-Stars, along with senior halfback John Schaeffer and junior striker Matt Shwaclunan.

FIGHTING 'TILL THE END! Womens Varsity Soccer secured a secondplace finish in the Eastern Independent League for the 1995 fall season with an overall record of 10-4-3.

Season high lights included a 4-1 pounding of LCA,a 43 win over Beaver secured by a goal in the last two minutes of play, and a 2-1 win over Dana Hall thanks to a last-minute goal by Vicki Fossum.

Four members of the team were named to the EIL all-star team: senior co-captain Krissy Walker, junior Vicki Fossum, sophomore Jeanne Nicholson, and freshman Cortney Kitchen. Rookie goalie Laura Apostolou came up big in every game this season, with a whopping 25 saves against Winsor and a shutout in the 3-0 blowout of Cushing.

Less glorious moments of the season included a vicious struggle against Tabor that ended in a 1-1 tie, a disappointing loss to arch-rival Winsor,and questionable officiating by myopic referees throughout the season.

As for post-season play, Womens Soccer did not win the AISGA tournament but managed to triumph over Dana Hall thanks to two goals by Krissy Walker and Vicki Fossum.

The season concluded with a loss to Rivers School in the semifinals of the NEPSAC tournament.

Though the team endured two overtimes, a shoot-out and a sudden-death shoot out, Bancroft suffered a disappointing defeat. The graduation of only four seniors ensures Bancroft's competitiveness in years to come.

REBUILDING AND RELOADING Bancroft Varsity Field Hockey went unbeaten in four of their last six games to conclude their season with a record of 3-10-3. Despite losing eight games by a one-goal margin,the team,led by Coach Gerhardt and tri-captains Kelly Kervick,Yolanda Pope,and Astrid Tsang, remained upbeat, punctuating the end of their season with an impressive 2-0 victory over Lexington Christian Academy.

Eleven games into the season, the Bulldogs found themselves with a 0-9-2 record, having suffered many disappointing close losses. They proceeded to tie league competitor Dana Hall, and set themselves up for a week of intense training to prepare for arch rival Winsor. In a game set under bright lights in Boston, Bancroft scrapped their way to a scoreless first half.

Although the team succumbed to exhaustion in the second half, the Winsor coach declared the 1-0 game to be one of her team's toughest challenges.

The Bulldogs won their first game the following Monday, defeating Williams School of Connecticut 3-1. Their streak improved to two, as they defeated Cushing Academy 1-0 on Wednesday. A 3-1 loss to Tabor Academy ended the winning, which was rejuvenated in the 2-0 season finale.

Sophomore forward Kathryn Crowley finished the season strongly, scoring four goals in the final six games. Sophomore wing Alaina Montuori was also a clutch performer; both girls scored in the close match with Tabor. In that same game, freshman goalie Aimee Green (the team's MIP), made 23 saves. Defense also flourished towards the season's end;junior Liza Beth could be seen all over the field, and sophomore Lindsay Bennet scored her first varsity goal in the team's win over Cushing.

Junior Kelly Kervick was named as an Eastern Independent League All-star, as well as the team's MVP. The team also missed a chance to participate in the AISGA Field Hockey tournament, as they were one team away from consideration.

KEEPING AT A COMPETITIVE PACE The 1995 Bancroft Cross Country team has had its share of highs and lows this year.

This team has accomplished many individual goals, while still managing to maintain a respectable standing in the EIL. The men's team ended the regular season with an overall record of 12-6(league 10-4),falling well short of an EEL Championship.

But all was not lost. As the end of the season approached, it seemed as if the team found a second wind. Under the strong leadership of Coaches Mark O'Brien and Ed Shindle, with intimidating victories over Wheeler, St. Sebastian's, and many EIL foes, the Bulldogs regained their confidence. When the Championship race took place, the league expected Bancroft to finish in third (our regular-season finish). But the Bulldogs are known to defy expectations. So, led by EIL All-Star Dave Hawkins, 8th place finisher Jim Paugh, and EIL All-Star Carter Ruml, the "Dawgs" upset Pingree to place second in the EIL. The next race proved that the EIL victory was no accident, for the first time in seven years,Bancroft dealt St. Peter-Marian a devastating loss.

The attitude at the end of the season is a positive one for the men's team.

This year saw the resurrection of the injury-plagued careers of Jim Paugh and Carter Ruml, the advancement of Dave Hawkins, Jeff Goodwin, and Mike Hochman into the League's elite, the introduction of rising stars such as Ethan Don and Eric Coghlin,the remarkable improvement of Tom Goss, Nick Marcoux, and Justin Pitcher, and the transformation of Andrew Schaeffer, Sam Kressler, and Justin Leroux from joggers into hard-core runners. Everyone on this team played a major role in making the team into a contender. The future only looks brighter.

The women's team had an equally impressive season. Captain Sara Scheufele led her team to a second place League fmish both in the regular season and in the League meet. Through the efforts of Sara, Shveta Sinha, Lydia Stein, and the occasional presence of Jing Wang, the women's team racked up the wins. The addition of seventh-grader Mackenzie Goodwin only strengthened this already-tough team.

Mackenzie received many accolades for her ability, including a second-place finish in the league meet and All-New England honors at the NEPSTA race. The women's team looks promising next year, with the addition of more runners.

THE WHOLE ENCHILADA! When Bancroft students talk sports, rarely did the word "golf' come up. In fact many simply shrugged their shoulders and questioned "We have a golf team?". These incidents rapidly became the exception rather than the rule, due to the success of the two-yearold team. Led by Coach Aleksiewicz and senior captain Mike Montuori, the hungry, upstart Bulldogs worked from late August to the sweet end on October 25th.

The top five were: No.#1- senior Mike Montuori, No. #2 - sophomore Neal Donnelly, No. #3 - senior Pete Collins, No. #4 junior Grant Bowes, No. #5 - freshman Graham Binder/sophomore Jim Deprez. The team had an overall record of ten wins and two losses on their way to the league title. The Bulldogs gained a share of first they would never relinquish on September 27th by beating Beaver and Landmark.

However the date that will not soon be forgotten proved to be the final day of the season. The Bulldogs needed to beat Concord and Beaver in order to win the title. Under pressure the Bulldogs silenced all arguments as to who were the champions of 1995 by winning 10 out of 10 possible points. Concord went home in second; Mr. A and the Bulldogs went for a victory dinner at McDonalds.

The most accurate adjective for the 1995 team would have to be "clutch"; they won when they had to. Looking towards next year, seniors Mike Montuori, who has the skills to play at the college level, Lou Desantis, and Pete Collins will be missed.

However, winning two Eastern Independent League championships in a row can certainly be accomplished. Three out of five top five members of the team will return in 1996, wearing championship jackets to remind everybody that Bancroft Golf is for real!

IMPROVEMENT AND PROGRESS The womens' varsity basketball team ended their season with a 9-11 record and a fourth place finish in the Eastern Independent League. It was a rough season for an overall young team that included freshmen Katie Enlow, Mia Pearson and Danielle Spring, sophomores Laura Apostolou, Abby Morgan and Sara Scheufele,junior Courtney Blute, and senior co-captains Yolanda Pope and Krissy Walker. The chemistry between the players took the team on a four game winning streak. They started the season slowly at 1-6 but ended on a better note having an 8-5 record in their last thirteen games. The Bulldogs finished with a 7-7 record in league play. Though Bancroft played in no tournaments, they were known throughout the league as the giant crushers, thanks to their defeat over Winsor and a five point loss to LCA late in the season after having been pounded by them in the first meeting. Despite their record, the team shall remember and treasure the 1995-1996 season, thanks to the fun the players had as a team. As the team is comprised mostly of talented underclassmen, the seven returning members look forward to next season in hopes of future success and ultimately an undefeated season.

MAKING HISTORY This year's Mens' Varsity Basketball team could very well be the best in the school's history. They won twenty games,finishing with a record of 20-3, and remained undefeated in the Eastern Independent League,two feats never before accomplished by a Bancroft Mens' Varsity team. This was the season that this team has been working for for the past four years, to not only win the league but to have a legitimate shot at winning the New England Prep School Athletic Conference tournament.

For the team to finish undefeated in the league this year they had to win all three of their games in the last week of the season against LCA, Chapel Hill, and Berwick. The most challenging of the three was the first. Bancroft had the ball with about 25 seconds left in the game and was losing by one. The ball found itself in the hands of Matt Hitzhusen, who had been having a tough day shooting. But, with 12 seconds left in the game Matt nailed it, giving Bancroft the win,41-40. The other two games Bancroft won with relative ease, defeating Chapel Hill 55-34 and Berwick 64-43, giving the Mens' Varsity Basketball team its first ever undefeated season in the EIL. With the success of their season, the team earned the top seed in the NEPSAC tournament. Their first game came against the eighth seed, Marvelwood, a team that averaged 79 points per game this year. By controlling the pace of the game and doing essentially what they wanted to do Bancroft was able to frustrate Marvelwood and ultimately win the game comfortably, 63-49.

The win over Marvelwood meant that Bancroft would have to play Williams in the semi-finals, the only Class D team to have beaten Bancroft this year. In this game Bancroft felt that if they could put together two good halves they would be able to win without much trouble. However, it just was not meant to be for this team. Throughout the first half the score remained close, with Bancroft finding themselves down four by the break. In the second half Bancroft captured the lead for a short time, but only fora short time as Williams recaptured the lead and went on to win. The full house of fans were not unappreciative of the team, however. As the starters left the court with about a minute soda half left in the game they received a standing ovation, especially the seniors who were such a big part of the team.

The Bancroft Mens' Varsity Basketball team may have played one less game this year than they had hoped to, but they still accomplished a great deal. The seniors on this team laid the foundations of a bona fide basketball program at Bancroft. As Coach O'Brien has said, when he came to Bancroft, none of the players worked towards improvement outside of the season until this senior class began to. Even though the members of the team may not be blessed with outstanding talent, because they have worked hard to elevate themselves to a higher level of play.

For this reason Coach O'Brien knows he will not have to worry about the work ethic of his future teams. This year's Mens' Varsity Basketball team is perhaps the best Bancroft has ever had, and should not be remembered as the team that almost won it all, but as the team that stalled it all.

SETTING A NEW STANDARD This school year, for the first time in five years, Bancroft offered wrestling as a winter sport. Although there was little interest, seven individuals joined and the team was formed. Under the guidance of coaches Mr.Teutsch and Mr. McDermott, the 1995-1996 Bancroft Varsity wrestling team enjoyed a season of great improvement, as a team of individuals. The team included: as the 103 lb. weight class, Torn Goss, Mike Peters at 119, Nick Marcoux at 125, Jon Pitcher at 145, Captain Jarred Faucher at 152, Chris Farmerie at 171, and Sam Kressler at 189.

Victory against other schools as a team was virtually unattainable, for a team of seven losses, many points of which had to be to forfeited. However, a high point of the season was when they stomped on Concord, despite points lost to forfeit, and officially won the meet. The Eastern Independent League tournament was also a high point, with three wrestlers, Tom Goss, Jarod Faucher, and Sam 1Cressler winning medals.

Highlights of the season include Sam Kressler's amazing victories throughout the season, climaxing in his great performance in the tournament, and Jon Pitcher's awesome pins at the tournament, one pin occurring only eleven seconds into the match! Tom Goss wrestled a perfect season, winning every match with a first round pin, and his two horrifying matches with the unholy Jon "the annihilator" Watts were shining moments of the season. Mike Peters crushed many of his opponents with his great strength and skill. Nick Marcoux's persistence and skill earned him an advancement to the New England tournament. Jarrod Faucher used his expert wrestling to face many of his tough opponents, managing to capture a medal in the EIL tournament. Also, Chris Farmerie had a good rookie season, highlighted by his total devastation of his opponent from Landmark, ending in a twenty-one second pin.

Overall, the season was a milestone for Bancroft winter sports. The team established a reputation amongst the EIL wrestling teams, warning them that Bancroft is not a force to be taken lightly.

With the expected incoming of wrestlers from the Middle School next year, hopefully we will establish a large enough team to someday dominate the Eastern Independent League.

A SUCCESFUL VENTURE

The 1995-96 ski season was a true test of athletic perseverance.

Starting in October, dedicated team members were in the new weight room working out and preparing for what would be a season they were certain to dominate. The team's dedication was matched by promising weather; the snow didn't stop coming, and spirits ran high. When within one week of the first race, the supply of snow suddenly diminished, team performance didn't lag. Despite many canceled races, practices remained intense. On the mountain, gates were set for practice courses, while dry land included running and weight lifting. Finally the season began, though not with the most desirable conditions. Team members learned quickly that skiing is a sport completely at the mercy of weather patterns, and in dealing with the disappointments of a delayed season, the support that members gave each other was encouraging. Team camaraderie grew; from rubbing helmets to hiking courses together, everybody experienced the peculiarities of a few and the hidden talents of everyone.

At races expectations and tension were always high. Launching into the first race, the women's team pulled far ahead of the men's. The point total was good enough to ensure an overall fourth place in the league. Yet by the end of the season, both the men's and women's teams had pulled ahead, and the point standing had more than doubled. The delayed season finally pulling to a close, the team had a record to be proud of and experiences to remember.

Next year's varsity team has a basis on this season's solid performance to dominate the league.
