Over the past four years, the class of 1995 made many wonderful memories but also encountered many difficulties along the road to success. During our joy and our conflicts, one woman stood above the rest as a teacher, a class adviser and most importantly, a friend. One student commented,"As a teacher, she has high expectations, but I always know she'll help me." She radiates with smiles, compliments, and an attitude that truly shows she loves her job. In class, she joins the circle of discussion, always listening to and valuing everyone's comments; she brings in snacks and treats to help students through lengthy double periods and demanding exams;and she always emphasizes understanding first, grades second. As a class advisor, she diligently works to unite our class, courageously inviting all 48 of us to her home for a delicious dinner and an evening of games last fall. As a friend, she always has a friendly smile and valuable advice for those who need it. Her popularity speaks for itself—as one senior said:"How do you put into words, how do you write about such an incredibly wonderful person?" And so when the time came to decide to whom to dedicate the yearbook, hands shot up in complete accord; finally our class made a united decision. For the first time in four years, our entire class voted in enthusiastic agreement. The class of 1995 proudly dedicates the yearbook to:

Teni Apelian All of us will take different paths, Different directions on various maps. But when we look back to see where we started We will remember the memories we all have kept guarded. The road will seem longer than we thought it to be, Four years have passed quickly and this we can see. The first day I met you seems not far away, And when I leave you I will remember to say: Goodbye is for strangers, never for friends. For this chapter in life does not mark the end.

Thank you to the class of '95, we may all be very different but I don't think I would change it if I had the chance. Thank you to all those who have stood by me: family, friends, teachers. Especially mom, dad and Lara. "You say the world is sick, I say tell me what that makes us darling You say the world's getting rid of its demons I say baby what have you been smoking?" -Tori Amos

"We're just spinning on some granite That we'd like to call a planet And if you need to contemplate Well here's an optimistic thought: Life I embrace you I shall honor and disgrace you Please forgive if I replace you You see I'm going through some pain But now I see clearly And the dawn is coming nearly And though I'm human and it's early I swear I'll never forget again" - John Popper "Life is a bridge: Cross it, but build no house upon it" - Native American proverb

There were shrimp carousing in the breakers, and the whiting thatfed on the shrimp and the shark that munched on the whiting and found them admirable,in the sportive brutality of the sea. A wind came across the ocean, sweeping with it a pall of fine white ash. The ash fell into the sea and into the breakers. The breakers washed dead shrimp ashore with the driftwood. Then they washed up the whiting. The shark swam out to his deepest waters and brooded in the cold clean currents. He was very hungry.that season. -A Canticle for Leibowitz, Walter Miller Jr.

"There is a magnet in your heart that will attract true friends."

The years we have been together have passed so quickly now that I look back. And now it's time to move on again to a whole new beginning for each of us. Many of you have made an impact on my life in some way and I will never forget you. But to my mom, dad, Bork°, Tibor, and to those of you who have seen me through the best and worst of times.., you have given me so much- how could I ever thank you enough and how can I ever say I love you enough? I could never forget you for a piece of your soul will always be in my heart.

ALEXANDRA L. LAPLANT We spotted the ocean at the head of the trail where are we going so far away? and somebody told me that this is the place where everything's better, everything's safe. And half an hour later we packed up our things we said we'd send letters and all those little things and they knew we were lying but they smiled just the same, it seemed they'd already forgotten we'd came. Now we're back at the homestead where the air makes you choke, people don't know you and trust is a joke We don't even have pictures just memories to hold that grow sweeter each season as we slowly grow old. -Toad the Wet Sprocket Thanks Mom and Dad for always being there, Geoff for all of your great advice-you are my best friend! and Jace for always caring and protecting me; I love you all! Upper School Upper School is a special place along life's journey. The class of 1995 has experienced new leadership, new spaces, new SATs, new clubs, new sports teams! The class was the first to use the newly computerized library, the last to sit in the "senior hallway." Many in the class took the first interdisciplinary course D.N.A. and Ethics and sat in the last A.P. European History course taught in room 301 which was demolished during the new construction. The class of 1995 leaves Bancroft well prepared and eager for the challenges of colleges and universities - the next stop along the way. Bancroft has been the beginning...the journey is to be continued! -Mrs. Groves

MiddleSchool We welcomed 43 sixth graders to the Middle School this year. Many of them came to us from our Lower School while others were experiencing Bancroft for the first time. For all there was a transition to make, a new schedule to get used to, six teachers to get to know. As the year went on, the sixth grade settled comfortably into their new role as Middle Schoolers. They quickly made their presence felt in all areas of the school: academic, athletic, and social. Seventh grade began the year in the Maine woods of Chewonki. This was the first time that the class had begun the year in Maine. In previous years the trip had occurred a few weeks into the school year. Through four days of group and individual challenges, the seventh graders braved the Maine woods and their own cooking to emerge a little stronger, more sure of themselves and their classmates, and with the satisfaction of knowing that they joined a long line of previous Bancroft seventh grades who had successfully met the challenge. The eighth grade delighted audiences with their play, "Charley and the Chocolate Factory." The play continued the tradition of excellence in the performing arts. Sixth graders experiencing the transition from Lower to Middle School. Seventh graders boarding the buses that will take them to Wiscassett, Maine and the week at Chewonki. Eighth Graders reading their play for the first time together. All of these are experiences unique as the individuals in the class yet they are shared with all of the classes that through the years have gone through the Middle School at Bancroft. Next year, the cycle begins again and in a very real way life in the Middle School is to be continued. -Mr. Rocha

Bancroft's Foreign Exchange Teacher from England

What a delight and an honour it has been to come and spend a year teaching at Bancroft School. We have been made to feel very welcome right from the start and it has been a pleasure to get to know so many people. It was occasionally suggested at home that going to live in a foreign country with a new born baby and a four year old daughter was not entirely a course to be recommended. However, all that has happened has utterly confounded any doubts and fears which we may have had. I am particularly glad to have had the opportunity to get to know so many of the senior class. They have been so charming and I know that in time they will all come to realize that poetry is the only real source of truth and that the most satisfying thing you can do with a television is to drop it off a second floor window, preferably onto concrete, and wait for the crash. I'm not so foolish as to imagine that I have taught anybody anything this year but I would like to acknowledge the fact that I have learned a great deal and it is largely this that makes me so grateful to have had the experience. I think I can confidently say that Victoria, Alice, Flora, and I all feel extremely fortunate to have been associated with such an interesting and dynamic school as Bancroft and it is greatly our hope that the community will continue to flourish. Equally we hope that we will be able to keep in touch with the school's progress-- if you find yourself in England, seek us out. -Mark Henderson

This year the girl's soccer team will go down in history as one of Bancroft's best yet. With a great season of 16-2-1, highlighted by tarnishing Winsor's league record with a 3-3 tie, we finished third in the league. Throughout the season, the offense dominated the league, averaging over four goals a game while the defense shut down the other tea M 5, allowing an average of less than two goals a game. Five players were chosen at the end of the season as Eastern Independent League All- Stars. Then on to the tournaments...finishing a strong second in AISGA helped us to be seeded second in the NEPSAC tournament. We annihilated Canterbury and Gunnery in the semis and quarterfinals of NEPSAC, scoring over ten goals, while only allowing two. With these two wins, the team reached the New England Tournamentfinals for the first time, competing with Lawrence Academy. After a tremendous effort, the team lost to Lawrence in overtime. We finiahed the season number two among small New England prep schools, netted 97 goals, and achieved the outstanding record of 18-3-1.

Teamwork

I

Scrimmage day in early September gave the Men's Varsity Soccer Team reason for optimism. After finishing the day undefeated and unscored upon, it was apparent that this would be a contending team despite the loss of 10 seniors to graduation. When the dust settled in early November, the Bulldogs had finished 8-3-3 in the Eastern Independent League, good enough for 3rd place in the 8 team league, and had narrowly missed the NEP5AC tournament. Among the more treasured moments was a scintillating 3- 1 home victory against the rival Pingree Highlanders keeping the Bulldogs in the hunt for the league title at midseason. Junior Pete Paszkowski led the team in scoring with 13 goals and 6 assists as 11 different players scored at least one goal. Sophomore Ben Dore anchored the solid defense with considerable help from senior backs Lyle Whitney and John Angelini, and junior back Kenny Swan. Senior captains Curran Ford and Jared Wollenberg provided very able leadership and ball control as midfielders with help from juniors Amol Sharma, John Shaeffer, and Josh Wilson. Junior Pete Chenot and sophomore Matt Shwachman shared duties in the forward line while junior Josh Shriber filled the goal. Eastern League All- Star Status was awarded to Curran Ford, Jared Wollenberg, Pete Paszkowski, and Ben Dore. MVP honors went to Curran Ford while the MIP was Josh Wilson. The 1994 Bancroft Boys' J.V. Soccer team finished the season with a successful 8-2-3 record. Highlights included a home win over league rival Pingree and a Homecoming Day victory over L.C.A. The team was led by junior co- captain Michael Chang and sophomore co- captain I3ob Gayer. Top scoring honors went to junior David Leipman and freshman Joey Persky. Freshman striker Josh Katz, sophomore halfback Tony Mangano and junior wing Mike Katz also greatly contributed on offense. A strong defense led by freshman goalkeeper Drew Freilich, sophomore stopper Bob Cayer, and freshman sweeper Bram Yoffie kept the Bulldogs from surrendering many goals. Sports Night awards went to freshman Chris Connolly (Unsung Hero),junior David Leipman (Most Valuable Player), and freshman Joey Persky (Most Improved Player).

Still On To The 1994 Varsity Field Hockey team had a very successful season. With ten seniors, three juniors, and one sophomore, we had a strong, experienced group of hardworking, dedicated players. Our overall record of 12-3-2 shows that our talent was not to be taken lightly. With spirit boosters such as "Do it now, and "Refuse to lose" slogans, scrunchies, the cage, and stickers, we were pumped and psyched for each game. Highlights included beating rival Pingree 1-0, and clinching the Eastern Independent League title for the fourth consecutive year with a 1-0 win against Winsor. Six players were named to the All- Star team, surpassing all others teams in number chosen. Despite a disappointing season-ending loss to Holderness in the NEPSAC tournament, we hung up our sticks with a real sense of accomplishment, knowing that each girl gave her all every minute of every game. We all look back on our season with the memory that not once, in the past four years, had we lost a game on our home field, and with the true feeling of friendship and teamwork. The junior varsity field hockey team had a successful season ending with a record of 7-3-2. Major highlights included a win over arch- rival Cambridge early in the season, a well played game and exciting 4-2 victory over Dana Hall, and a sound defeat of L.C.A. on Homecoming. Liz Raclin, Marissa McFarland, and Kathryn Crowley led the offense with 15 goals, while a very balanced defense provided solid support for the team. Liza Beth was chosen Most Improved Player and Liz adin was chosen Most Valuable Player for the 1994 season.

The Quest for Victory The numerical results attained by the Varsity Cross Country team only reveal an outer level of the team's experience during the 1994 season. Each meet contributing to their 15-3 record was the result of the drive, dedication, and tenacity the team displayed all through the summer and fall in both training and racing. High school cross country is a composite of individual efforts; every win was the product of the efforts of a dozen runners motivated for various reasons to push themselves beyond fatigue and pain. Straining against - and then breaking through - the limits of their endurance, the runners waged a lonely struggle against their minds, their bodies, the terrain, the weather, and the competition, trying to run 3.1 miles faster than they ever had before. In retrospect, these individual efforts taken together yielded a remarkably rewarding season.... As Coach O'Brien noted at fall sports night, Bancroft's only significant rival was the perennially- challenged Pingree squad. The two defeats inflicted by them, while depressing, served as a reason to redouble the intensity of our training and made our two victories over them all the more gratifying. Other notable meets of the season were our loss to St. Peter- Marian, our victory over St. Sebastian's, dual defeats of Berwick and Williams, and a well- fought second place finish at the E.I.L. championships. The Eastern League coaches recognized the quality of the team and its coaching by choosing Carter uml, Jeff Goodwin, and Sarah Scheufele as E.I.L. All- Stars. However, the highest point of the season was the final meet of the year- the Division III New England Prep School Championships at Groton. By running truly inspired races and capitalizing on the depth of our team, we exceeded all of our pre- race expectations and reached a new level of potential - defeating Pingree and placing fifth in the field of thirty schools. Happy to have finished the season so well, Bancroft Cross Country looks to the future, ready to apply the lessons and winning traditions of the past to the challenges of the 1995 season.

4 Carter runs from the angry bear he found, leaving all his competition in the dust.

A And they're out of the gate... Bancroft pulls out on the far right.

IEFirst Varsity Season - A Success! Bancroft School was the seventh school to become a member of the Eastern Independent League (E.I.L.) in golf this fall. The format for competition is a five player, medal play situation where tri-meets are held on seven consecutive Wednesdays. A golfer would earn a point by winning the majority of the holes in a nine hole match. The team needed to accumulate three points to be declared the winner of a match. During the first four weeks of the season, various line-up changes produced a one win-seven loss record. Young, inexperienced, nervous and the challenges provided by Myopia Links, Nashawtic Country Club, E55CX County Club, and our own Tatnuck Country Club all played a role in our auspicious start. The highlights at this point in the season were the first team point earned by Neal Donnelly during the second week in a match against Concord Academy and the first team victory, a 4-1 decision at our home course against Chapel Hill. The fun was just beginning. The emergence of the Bancroft School golf team took place on October 12,1994, at F'utterham Meadows. The beaver home course was the sight of our first double victory. Two 4-1 triumphs were the impetus to a three win-one loss finish to our regular season. The Bulldogs registered a 4-8 season record to finish fourth in the team standings. However, the improvement continued as the team represented by Montuori, Donnelly, and Bowes captured third place in the League Championship played at Berwick. The team is grateful to Mr. Sharp and Mr. Kelley for starting the program and Tatnuck Country Club for their hospitality.

We finished fourth in the Eastern Independent League and qualified for the Al5GA and NEFSAC tournaments. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported us at our games. Special thanks to Mr. Enlow for making our season "fun" and for taking us out for ice cream. Girls' J.V. basketball had a fun and successful season with an overall record of 9-4. Taking Over The To At the beginning of the 1995 Varsity Basketball season, Bancroft's chances for an Eastern Independent League Title or the school's first ever NEPSAC tournament bid seemed slim. With an early record of 1-3, Bancroft ranked seventh out of eight teams in the EIL. The season turned around, however, as Bancroft was able to utilize its defensive capabilities and balanced scoring attack to finish the season 17- 6. Sophomore Matt Hitzhusen, and Juniors Pete Paszkowski, Amol Sharma, and John Schaeffer led the way, while Jared Wollenberg was superb at the point guard position. The turning point of the season was marked by a big win over Pomfret and bigger 50- 49 win over league- leading L.C.A.,featuring a game- winning buzzer- beater by Joe Rosales. Although Bancroft's new found inspiration did not lead to a victory over league rival Pingree, it did put the team in contention for a share of the EIL championship with Pingree. A second win over LCA at home clinched the first EIL championship in a decade for the Bulldogs and assured them their first NEPSAC bid. After winning its first NEPSAC game over Kents Hill, Bancroft's season ended with a third straight loss to Pingree. This 47- 46 loss was a heartbreaking end to the most successful Bulldog season in ten years. JV started slowly at 2- 2 but won six out of the last seven games to finish the season at an impressive 13-5. Jeff Goodwin carried the scoring load while providing an intimidating force on defense. Forwards Jeff and Pete Collins cleaned up on the boards, each having multiple 10+ rebound games. The guards Dave Hawkins, Chris Connolly, Jason Mohaghegh did an excellent job of running the offense and giving the JV a legitimate threepoint threat. The bench was extremely deep, Ben Dore and Erron Titus each made significant contributions. Sophomore co- captain Matt Shwachman's calm presence was missed when he went down with an ankle injury. His absence was most noticeable in a one point loss to Beaver when Bancroft was unsuccessful in getting the offense started. Despite captains Jim Paugh and Matt's injuries, tenacious team defense and different people's efforts stepping up led the team to a successful season. JV would like to thank Varsity for cheering U5 on as well as the other teachers, students, and parents who helped U5 on to victory.

The M.I.P. award went to Left Erik Liland, the M.V.P. honors went to John Angelini and Katie Krock. Unfortunatly the lack of snow this year prevented us from being able to practice as much as we would have liked, even forcing several races to be postponed. We had two Slalom and six Giant Slalom races this year. Surprisingly enough, in slalom, which we expected to be our weakest event, we did very well. Overall, we had a very strong, evenly balanced team, with conistent scoring from both the boys' arid girls' teams. Practices were fun and we always had a great time on the mountain. Fadge and Yuri insured that there was never a dull moment.

a) Homecoming '94 complete with a B-BQ and alumni galore brought to the surface feelings of school spirit. It all started Friday afternoon at the Upper School pep rally led by M.C. Paul Belanger. The next day was even more exciting as almost all of our teams demolished LCA. The sidelines were packed with eager fans, including the French Exchange students, shouting words of encouragement to the players. Spectators sported the unique Bancroft Bulldog tee-shirts while the Dog House quickly sold its goods. Later that night, the festivities continued as the Upper Schoolers danced and celebrated thier victories of the day at the Homecoming Dance. Full of events, the weekend closed with lasting memories.

Teni understanding a joke or missing an Oprah, Rachel putting a full sized bite in her mouth or getting a B, Kara not excercising or not being so scared, Laura getting to bed early or having a comeback, Kristen being serious or not playing with her food, Melissa without her DCT and sportsbras, Jaime F. without her turtlenecks, Marina admitting she might be wrong, Jaime K. driving the speed limit, Kate C. without the NBA, Cara V. living in Worcester, Curran not flirting, Craig without Snoop or Coolio, Andrew not making us laugh, Lauren without J. Crew, Mary not working at Ronnie's, Jeff without his hugs, Jarred without his red truck, Patti without Amar, Alycia without talking, Steph without her orange watch, Tory and Maria without their cameras, Mike without his music, Erin without candy corn, the senior guys without Doug, Matt without his drums, and Kate D. without her smiles. . The good times we've shared will always remain in our hearts. Hold on to the memories, we know we will. To the entire class of 1995, Thank You!

Goodbye

Our sincere gratitude goes out to: Fletch for all of his funny captions, Cory for his hard work on the cover, our photo staff for all of the awesome pictures, the Alumni and Development Office for their patience, Mr. Dec, Mrs. MacGilpin, and Mr. Richman for their encouragement and guidance. And especially Muffy who willingly overextended the definition of sports editor, without her the yearbook would be lacking... a lot. Thank you so much for everything -Jenn and Cam
