he typical Bancroft student is usually so busy pursuing academic, athletic and artistic challenges that he or she barely has time to stop and reflect on what it is that makes each year stand out. Whether 1992 was your first year of high school, the year you met your best friend, got your driver’s license, or were ac cepted to a college, it was undoubtedly a year to remember. As a Bancroft student the high light of your year may have been winning the Eastern League Championship, performing in the musical, participating in a foreign ex change, or getting to know your C.A.R.E. bud dy, and we hope that each time you look at the yearbook, it will remind you of everything you enjoyed in the 1991-1992 school year. As the saying goes, “It’s a jungle out there, but don’t fail to see the beauty of the trees.” So relax and enjoy these reflections of an unfor gettable year!

Dedicated, creative, and funny, Ms. Martell has been a part of the lives of our entire class. Every lunch period she can be found in her room among frantic math students trying to complete their homework assignments. Some call her tough, but there is no doubt that she helps her students however she can. A complicated math problem doesn’t seem so frighteningly impossible once she gives us the confidence to complete if. As our class adviser, she works behind the scenes with our representatives to help make our trips, projects, activities, and fund-raisers successful. She always has a creative idea to offer, and also puts a realistic slant on our crazy ideas. It is difficult to say good-bye to a woman who has been such an important part of our lives. We will never forget Ms. Martell and her easy, reassuring smile. She has taught us lessons which go far beyond math and which will stay with us in the future.

To all my friends, thanks for all the moments we've shared. I'll always keep them close to my heart.

Kathleen Egan Mariah Aleksiewicz Comes the Dawn After a while you learn the subtle difference Between holding a hand and chaining a soul. And you learn that love doesn't mean leaning And company doesn't mean security. And you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts And presents aren't promises, and you begin to accept your defeats With your head up and your eyes open, with the grace of a woman, Not the grief of a child, and you learn to build all your roads today Because tomorrow's ground is too uncertain for plans. And futures have a way of falling down in mid-flight. And after a while you learn that even sunshine burns if you get too much So you plant your own garden and decorate your own soul. Instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers. And you learn that you really can endure, That you really are strong. And you really do have worth. And you learn and learn, with every good-bye you learn. — Anonymous

Matthew James Enlow " 'I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept his claim to be God.' That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on a level with a man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God; or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit on him and kill him as a demon, or you can fall on his feet and call him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.” C.S. Boys’ Soccer

A Building Year? he Boys' Varsity Soccer Team finished the '91 season with a 49-2 record and a fifth place finish in the Eastern League. The team performed competitively with most losses by just one goal. Seniors Scott MacGilpin and Steve Zottoli led the team in scoring, and defenders Neil Kirsch and Matt Lindquist were named to the Eastern League All-Star Team. The highlight of the season was a final game 3-1 victory over Chapel Hill, making up for a 0-0 earlier in the season. Sophomore goalie Brendan McGrail was named the team's Most Improved Player and Neil Kirsch was named the team's Most Valuable Player.

Take it to the Limit irls’ Soccer started the year tentatively, with a new coach, new goalie, and a new swarm of freshmen. Determined to capture a title, with the encouragement of Coach Kelley, they worked together, starting in preseason to the last minutes of the NEPSAC tournament. The grueling work in the sun and running complexes for over twenty minutes soon paid off as the girls swept through their first five games. Decisive victories included first time wins over Newton, Winsor, Dana Hall, and Pingree. These victories brought the girls to the first ever Eastern League title. Disappointment came when the AISGA tournament, in which they were seeded first, was canceled due to poor weather. But the team was able to come back for a tough practice, and go on to the NEPSAC tournament, in which they were also seeded first. Unfortunately, the game was decided by a goal in the last minutes of a double overtime, and a disappointed team returned to Bancroft. However, Bancroft is the smallest school ever to be ranked first in NEPSAC, another victory for the girls. It was an exciting and emotional season the whole team will remember for a long time. The team still hears chants from practice, “Push it ladies, there is nothing to hold back for.” Although the desired undefeated season was not obtained, 14-2-1 is still impressive. The girls all learned sportsmanship and comradery in both victory and defeat. One of Coach Kelley’s favorite expressions was, "We are a family, we win as a team and lose as a team.” The song "Take it to the Limit” best describes the season, and finally, the girls are truly able to say: "We are number one.”

It's Been Done! ith the return of Coach Gerhardt, the Varsity Field Hockey team won the Eastern Independent League Championship for the first time in Bancroft Field Hockey history. With an undefeated record of 13-0-2, the team truly deserved this title. Family and friends, led by a new cheering squad (the senior guys), inspired the team to persevere, changing their motto from "Do it Now!" to, “It’s Been Done!” . Six team members were selected as Eastern League All-Stars: Laura Bayon, Elana Goldberg, Kelley Hendricken, Mer edith Morse, Julie Veneziano, Becky Dutton, and Michelle Beauregard.

Against All the Odds ptown Anthem was blaring and the crowd rose to its tee t as the Men's Varsity Basketball Team took to the court. January 3 1 the day Bancroft punished Chapel Hill in front of a "standing room only" crowd. The players knew what had to be done. As they charged on to the court, their fire and intensity was enough to beat Chapel Hill. Bancroft put them through 32 minutes of agony. With their patented SICKO-D and run and gun offense, Bancroft was able to force several Chapel Hill turnovers and convert them into dynamic fast break hoops. The team grew together and distributed the ball in order to create easy shots for each other. Ban croft dictated the game and was able to get each letterman into the box score. Highlights of the year included the Williams' Invitational Tournament where Bancroft made it to the finals. Josh Burwick and Mike Louca were named to the All Tournament Team. The Worcester Telegram and Gazette was Bancroft's major advertising agency, naming Scott MacGilpin as a Star of the Week and showcasing stellar action photos of Brett Rice and Amar Rajadhyaksha.

The Winning Line Up! fter a frustrating end to the 90-91 season, the girls set out to claim the Eastern League Title this year. Starting the week after Thanks giving, the entire team pushed to achieve this goal. Endless offense and defense drills, shooting drills and conditioning brought the team into prime shape for the season opener. The season was scheduled to open against Beaver Country Day School, long time rivals, but due to snow, the confrontation was postponed. All of the 8-6-4-2’s and figure eights soon paid off as the team ran circles around their opponents, sweeping 9-0. The average point spread for the first nine games was 32, and every game was won by 24 or more points. The girls suffered their first defeat at Cushing by three. As a team, led by senior captains Laura Bayon and Kerry Sullivan, the girls recuperated and retaliated with a decisive twenty point victory over Beaver Country Day School to clinch the Eastern League Title. The season was marked by tremendous efforts by all of the players (five seniors, four juniors, two sophomores, and one freshman) and subsequent praise by the Worcester Telegram and Gazette. The girls not only placed as one of the top five in Massachusetts Division 3, but also were ranked second. Coach Enlow waited for three years to see the Eastern League Title returned to Bancroft, and the 1991-92 team supplied this opportunity. With four juniors and three underclassmen, the team promises to be a force to be reckoned with for years to come.

Spring Nights he Spring '91 calendar was filled to the rim with student-run activities. The Social Committee's Casino Night was a grand success. The dress was semi-formal, so the atmosphere was very dis tinguished; and game booths run by faculty and students received much attention from chip-hungry gamblers. The evening wound down with dancing. The Under the Sea dance served as Student Coun cil's celebration of the long-awaited Spring Break. Grass skirts were ubiquitous, as were flower leis, beach balls, and pina coladas. A volleyball tour nament dominated one side of the gym while danc ing and lip-syncing prevailed on the other. A photo booth offered souvenirs of the evening. Intarsia and the Artists Union sponsored a Black 8c White dance where avid dancers rocked the night away. Powder 8c Wig presented its second Cabaret Night, where members performed musical numbers and improvs to entertain over one hundred spectators. Overall, Spring nights' spectrum of events left little to be desired!

►A handful of smiles! ▼America's most wanted.

Ghouls & Ghosts o the haunting tunes of the "Addams Family" and the "Monster Mash", Mr. Aleksiewicz introduced the classes as he changed into costumes of past Halloweens. Princesses, goblins, Ninja Turtles, and the like paraded around to the applause of students, parents, and faculty. Upper School activities included pumpkin carving, apple bobbing, a candy bar run, and costume competitions. Freshmen came as M&M's, the sophomores as gangsters, and the juniors as a "W here's Waldo" troupe. Once again the seniors stole the show with excerpts from T.V. Bancroft style.

“A stone dropped in the water, in a minute it was gone, But there were a thousand ripples circling round and round Today we are here, tomorrow we’ll be gone But there will always be a thousand memories echoing on and on.” After the last exam has been taken and the class trips are over, it is the memories that will stay with us. Memories of teachers who made us think, activities which made us smile, and friends who made us laugh. Reflecting on these memories will give us the strength to face the unknown and the security of knowing there are people who will always support us7^™
