Halloween The stands in the new gym were filled. Parents took pictures as the lower and middle school children paraded around, dressed as anything from a table with a checkered cloth and flowers to the typical ghosts and witches. Mixed in with the parents in the stands were many garbagebag raisins and their box. These "raisins" made up the Sophomore class. The Juniors were dressed as painters. The Freshmen sat together in circles between the gyms, holding flowers and listening to Simon and Garfunckle. The Seniors and teachers watched everything from the exercise room, getting ready for their skits. The Seniors' customary skit was a

little different this year. Three students were against three teachers in a game show, assisted by three beautiful card holders and a very debonaire host. The teachers' skit was a portrayal of several student stereotypes. Mr. Bixby, as Snow White, had to cope with a class of Gabby, Tardy, and Chewy as students. The morning assembly was not the end. During lunch class competitions of doughnut eating and apple bobbing were held. And at the end of the day, the Kindergarteners judged the pumpkins decorated by the Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors.

The Cafeteria

w's

Noise, segregation, physical violence, selfishness... these are characteristics that have nothing at all to do with the Bancroft School cafeteria. Every morning students congregate in the lunchroom for friendly greetings and conversations. Some students spend time there in the morning to finish the last two chemistry problems in chapter twelve. As lunchtime approaches and the lower school students push in their chairs and line up at the door, the mingled mass of upper school students is set loose towards the food counter. A few sit down and talk with friends while others wait in line for ten minutes laughing and talking quietly with peers and teachers. As the food line diminishes and more chairs are occupied one might expect lots of noise. But he who expects is deceived. There is no need for voices to be raised. Once in a while the charming sound of soup bowl being beaten with a spoon is heard. Then there is silence and a student stands up to make an announcement about the French Club volleyball game or the intramural floor hockey games that are usually played after lunch. The cafeteria rush thins out about thirty minutes into the period. But some tables never become vacant (not until the next period). Some groups of friends stay seated and talk until the next class begins. After lunch the cafeteria always seems busy. The janitors sweep the floor and straighten the chairs while the last two periods are in progress. Then during "free period", or "eighth period" the room is once again filled by students eager to get home. Their book bags are strewn across tables and lie uninterrupted until four, five, or six o'clock when a parent arrives with the ride home.

Under the superb coaching of Ron Pompeo the 1985 boys' varsity soccer team had another fantastic season. Guided by senior tri-captains Bill Bjork,Thad Coontz, and Rob Gray this year's young team passed its way to a 13-2 season and a third consecutive berth in the district E play-offs. The team advanced to the finals of the tournament with an early round 2-0 victory over Oxford and a chilling 3-2 overtime victory over nemesis Auburn. In the semi-finals a heart wrenching 3-1 loss to five times champions, Bromfield only slightly detracted from the best accomplishments of a varsity soccer team in Bancroft history.

Although this year's field hockey season was not as spectacular as last year's, just as much effort was put in by the mostly underclass team. Losing most of its varsity players to college, the women's field hockey team remained strong and tough. The team made it to the AISGA tournament, winning the first two games, but was defeated in a sudden-death flick off. All of the players should be congratulated for their excellent teamwork and determination during this "growing year".

John McCarthy The Lord is my shepard, I shall not want He makes me down to lie Through pastures green He leadeth me, the silent waters by With bright knives he releaseth my soul He maketh me to hang on hooks in high places He converteth me to lamb cutlets For lo, He hath great power and great hunger When cometh the day we lowly ones, Through quiet reflection, and great dedication Master the art of Karate Lo, we shall rise up And then we'll make the bugger's eyes water New Car Caviar Four Star Daydreams Think I'll buy me a football team

There'll be wars. There'll be peace. But everything one day will cease. All the iron will turn to rust; All the proud men into dust. What do you get for pretending? The danger's not real. Meek and obedient you follow the leader. Down well trodden corridors into the valley of steel. What a surprise! A look of terminal shock in your eyes. Now things are really what they seem. No, this is no bad dream. One more thing I'd like to say — I need a miracle every day.

Bernard T. and Geraldine Nowacki INDISPENSABLE author unknown

When you're feeling so important And your ego is in bloom When you simply take for granted You're the wisest in the room When you feel your very absence Would leave a great big hole, Just follow these instructions They will humble any soul. Take a bucket filled with water Put your hand in to the wrist, Pull it out, the hole remaining Is how much you will be missed. Splash wildly when you enter, Stir a lot and splash galore, Then stop, and in a minute, It looks just like before. The moral of this story Is do the best you can Be proud, but please remember, There's no indispensable man.
