8: Mrs. P. finally settled the meaning of prototype by defining it as a daughter who is the "spittin'" image of her mother, and Phyll supplemented "spittin' effigy".

14: Pris, before the Time Current Events Test: "Now, Miss Clark you musn't look over my shoulder"—the reason, she wanted fair competition between Miss Clark and Mrs. Peckham.

15: Wheatie: "If you want to see the bed spread, pull the slats out."

21: Carol announces to Pat, who is taking Study Hall, that Rosanne, Pat and Gwenny are absent.

5: In a discussion of Graduation dress, Barby: "Your clothes won't fit you next year, anyway." Mrs. Peckham, "Gracious, what are you going to do so that they won't?"

6: College Boards—Well, we didn't want to go to college anyway.

8: The American History Class was shaking, but not because of a test. Miss Clark got the "butter" of it.

"Those ruffians stole my clock!!", said D.T.P., "and two 11: grey-haired detectives are roaming around". Might know they'd be grey-haired.

12: Pris, Bett and Mac spend two full days in school.

16: Mr. Cole came to all the classes. He was washing windows.

SENIORS VS. OYSTERS "The time has come," Shirley said, "To talk of many things, Of whispering in the library, And will we get our rings, Of why the locker's such a mess, And who talks while Glee Club sings."

"But wait a bit," our Phyllis cried, "Before we have our chat, For all of us are out of breath, And Pat, I love your hat!

It becomes you, oh so well!"

Pat thanked her much for that.

"The reason that we're out of breath," Explained our Nancy Mac, "'S that we all went out for lunch And ran the whole way back."

For coming on the nick of time She really has a knack.

Rosanne, our sweet and quiet gal From up on Westwood Drive, Was out of school for seven days, Because she had the hives: "But that's not true," sweet Rosy said, "You know 'twas only five."

"How can I wear my uniform," Wheatie-pie began, "When someone else is wearing it?

Please find it if you can, And if—" But she could say no more.

Her only nylons ran.

"Why don't you just wear knee-socks?"

Remarked our Betty Jane.

"They are considered awfully smart And safe when 'raising cane'.

So if you are opposed to them, You really are insane."

"Oh, I just love our Hist'ry class.

I try to get it done."

In fact in all of Bancroft School Nan's the only one, But she still asks one question: "What happened at Verdun?"

"My Father came to watch me Play basket ball today.

But why he didn't bring the car I really cannot say."

Lou was eager for a ride, And spoke in sore dismay.

When Mary sings, just watch her eyes With never-ceasing flirting!

Her voice and glance when they're combined Are really disconcerting!

"I do not try to do it, and Of that I am quite certain."

"Rosemary, now you read your theme," Began our Mrs. P. "But it's no good. I really can't—" "Well, well just wait and see."

'Twas just what we expected, and We all laughed merrily.

"Piano playing," Shirley said, "Comes in awfully handy.

The cuts it gives me ,every day Really are quite dandy— Especially when my teacher's hair Is wonderful and sandy."

"I'll tell you all that Barb and Gwen," Repeated smiley Bea, "Are apt to be a little late."

The reason's plain to see, For we are very sure that they Are at the Colony.

Our Penney likes to laugh a lot, All jokes go to her head.

"Say, have you heard the one about—" She has often said.

But when we try a trick on her, She turns a brilliant red.

In her classes, Bobbie-Jean Heaved many a plaintive sigh.

The faculty explained it all: "Her mind was in the sky."

But just between both you and me, 'Twas on a certain guy!

Margey and the BLUE MOON Board Were getting rather sad.

Every day we heard her say: "Didja get me any ad?"

Whaf really worried Margery Was that no one had.

"All men, just like insects, Are listed with their kind.

The ones I classify as 'spooks' Aren't difficult to find.

But all aren't 'dopey'," Carol said With a certain few in mind.

Priscilla wants to go away To a college that has men.

"I wonder if when I get there I'll still have that same yen?

If not, I'll go some other place And just work with my pen!"

"Well," resumed Miss Mitchell, "we've Had our little fun.

Shall we study in the library?"

But answer came there none.

To the future Red Cross representative—all the unfinished bags Nan wasn't able to 'collect.

WITHOUT OUR CLASS We're the class of '46; though we may have caused some troubles, By chewing gum, forgetting suits, and even blowing bubbles, When all is said and done, we'll give a hearty cheer And hope the school can carry on successfully next year.

"Get your ads, girls, Get them in soon," Solicits Marge For Our BLUE MOON. • Little Carol is sad today 'Cause her Navy's gone away.

Dry your eyes and do be gay.

He'll come back another day.

"To write well," Mrs. Peckham says, "Read good books by the score."

Rosanne has tried this out, it seems, And proved the point once more.

Betty Jane has a question to ask.

To find the answer is surely a task.

Here is the question she put to her friend, "Who has the 'Bill' for my lost weekend?"

Shirley C., our. musician bright, Plays songs beyond compare.

Someday another Strauss she'll be, With long and curly hair.

Bobbie's a gal with plenty of fire, It's fairly easy to arouse her ire.

Blue eyes flash in a fearsome way, And all is forgotten the very next day.

Pat claims that she adores bright blue, Knitted in argyles gay in hue; But even though we've heard this said, We know her favorite still is "Red".

Phyl's a gal with a grand sense of humor; Believe me, friends, that's not just a rumor.

She's ready to help in a capable way, Be it food, be it work, be it play.

As fair as any "blossom", As sweet as any rose, Is Nancy H. whose quiet grace Charms every one she knows.

A horse to ride, a ranch to roam, And Mary Lou is right at home; But when it comes to the old lasso, Look out, men, she's after you.

Bea's a gal with good looks plenty; What will she be when she is twenty?

All her classmates like her a lot, And look at the fellows her red hair's caught!

Rosie's inclined to be very coquettish.

She always carries a "Rose" as a fetish.

She tosses her head, and flirts with her eyes; And completely captivates R.O.T.C. "Guys".

Mac's quite a lover of history lore.

Buchanan's praises she'll tell.

Although he brought on the Civil War, To her, he's still just "schwell".

A pretty smooth ensign is Mitch's pride.

She's now our most prospective bride.

'Though the distance between you may be wide, Chin up, Shin, we're at your side.

Way down South, happy and gay, While classmates groan through a "final" day, Barb will be bowing her heart away, As a dazzling "sponsor" at S.M.A. Elizabeth Arden has done wonders for Gwenny, Who'll do likewise for you for less than a penny.

She'll change you from a student to a stylish dame, Though father and relatives will vow you look the same.

Now, Pris, you know that Hollywood and Littleton Are miles and miles apart; But does a name connect them Quite closely in your heart?

Cheerful, vivacious, attractive, too, Penney's fun for both me and you.

Her interest in art is the "Wooden" Age, But that is not her only rage.

The musical world has a bright new star Headed for future fame.

Prima donna of opera near and far, Mary Tonna will make a name.

SIXTEEN ... JUNIOR SIZE There once was a class of young freshmen, Who came to the Bancroft School One morn in September, If you can remember, To learn of the golden rule.

In one corner we have Janet Mattson, Deep in a chat with her Jan, We all can surmise, By the look in their eyes, The talk is concerning a man.

Next we observe Connie Caron, Her mind's ever on the scale, With her egg and tomato, No bread nor potato, How could she possibly fail?

When it comes to a class recitation, And thinking of answers and all, They are gently soft-spoken, Which calls for much "jokin'"; Bev Cotton, and classmate, Ann Hall.

Spurs and saddles and horses, Are words of good cheer to Hope, In the classroom so able, A whiz 'round the stable— Her abilities cover large scope.

In taking stock of our blondes, One comes to mind right away, Sometimes called "Blimpy" By the friend she calls "Shrimpy" Bev Krock so nifty and gay.

THE BANCROFT FANTASY Was is a dream, or did I see it all in reality? It seemed as though I were back at the Bancroft School, walking through the corridors, and hearing the merry chatter of the familiar upper school girls.

What was Bancroft you might ask, and I would reply for the Sophomores: It was the laughter and gay spirit of Lois Wald.

It was the charm of Anne Savels.

It was the personality of Phyllis Woods.

It was the enthusiasm of Franny Daniels, Ann Felton and Elizabeth Kistler.

It was the friendliness of Barbara Reed.

It was the quiet happiness of Nancy Heywood.

It was the jokes and pranks of Irene Andreson and Louisa Coe. It was the willingness to help others of Ethel Rozefsky.

It was the loyalty and school spirit of Lorraine Metcalfe.

It was the dependability of Nancy Watters.

It was the intelligence and perseverance of Marion Leavitt and Jean Campbell.

It was the athletic ability of Ann Wellington.

It was the leadership of Barbara Park.

It was the infectious gaiety of Mary Lou Rossland.

THE HISTORY OF OUR CLASS Class Eight increased in girls this year but decreased in boys.

Now there are eight girls and seven boys. Perhaps some classmates will not graduate, but where would our class be without them?

We have had our fun: our Christmas party, our graduation, the writing and producing of our graduation play.

We have also had our troubles: achievement tests in all subjects, reports and homework assignments, some of which were to write Act One of our play in one night, to learn Latin or French vocabularies, to write compositions in English and in history.

We have had our boring days in class and our interesting ones.

We have had our disappointments, as a class, together.

SELF-GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATION SHIRLEY L. MITCHELL—President The Self-Government Organization was formed primarily to help each girl cultivate self-discipline and to assume responsibility.

This system is governed by the Student Council, under the guidance of Miss Mulno, faculty adviser. This group, composed of the Head of Self-Government, the four Class presidents and representatives from each class, meets once a week to discuss the problems and opinions of the girls of the Upper School.

An important part of each weekly meeting is the placing of each girl in the group system according to her ability, dependability, and cooperation. There are three groups: General, First, Second. Those on Groups I and II were given cuts every four weeks. Seniors on Group II also had permission to study in the Library.

Plans were drawn up for a change in uniform for the coming year. Knee socks were abolished.

Self-Government has constantly endeavored to make school life more enjoyable and satisfying by having each girl become a contributing member of the community.

The BLUE MOON Fair luncheon and the Spring Dance are the two main undertakings of the Social Committee. Both of these were unusually successful this year.

The luncheon menu met with the approval of all. We decorated the lunch room with Christmas greens and with bright red bells to add a joyous note. A large crowd attended, and with the help and cooperation of the Committee our luncheon was a great success.

This year our annual dance was held earlier than usual, on Saturday, March 2. Our theme was based on Saint Patrick's Day. The hall was brightly decorated with large paper shamrocks and streamers. About fifty couples attended, and all had a wonderful time. On the whole, our "Shamrock Hop" was most rewarding as far as fun was concerned.

The girls on the Committee, along with the hard work and helpful advice of Miss Estee, made this year quite eventful.

The Community Chest has had a very successful and interesting year.

A new undertaking, the sponsorship of a devastated French School, greatly inspired the members.

Our collection of money in the fall was supported exceedingly well by the students. In addition, there was an urgent call for magazines, and we collected a large quantity which were heartily welcomed by the patients.

The French School which we are supporting has been our big project this year. In the fall we sent them money to buy whatever they needed, and in the spring we sent them a box of books, and a scrapbook containing pictures of the school activities at Bancroft. These French children were upset by the war and need our help.

At Christmastime, the girls of the Upper School, under the auspices of the Community Chest, sang Christmas carols at City Hospital. The patients were delighted to hear us, and we have had many requests to continue this work next year.

In March, we collected clothing for a summer camp in France, and also sent money for food and clothing to four small children whose father was away.

For many years the Community Chest has paid for a scholarship for some negro boy or girl at Hampton Institute in Virginia, and this year we were pleased to receive a letter requesting the representation of the Bancroft School at the unveiling of a statue of Booker T. Washington, in New York.

The members of the Community Chest are proud to know that our small organization is represented in so many parts of the world.

In the beginning of our year one box by the pupils and three boxes by the faculty were filled with small, useful articles and toys for destitute European children.

Also, early in the year the Junior Red Cross Fund contributed five dollars, which made every student a member of the Junior Red Cross.

This year the Red Cross Committee has asked the girls in the high school to sew utility bags, wash clothes and handkerchiefs.

In the annual Red Cross drive of the city, the Junior Red Cross of Bancroft gave twenty-five dollars.

We are now in the process of filling ten more gift boxes for unfortunate children in war-torn countries.

Junior Red Cross meetings are held monthly by their respective representatives from Worcester County High Schools at the Worcester Red Cross Chapter House.

The Little Dipper has been devoted, as usual, to the literary end. There are three issues during the school year with the final one in charge of the Junior editors. The magazine has done much to stimulate creative writing. The thrill of seeing oneself in print is a great incentive, and the practical work of choosing and assembling the material, preparing it for the printers, is all valuable experience. There is a lot of work connected with these publications, but so much fun, too. We relinquish them, with reluctance, to our successors.

Miss Clark, Miss Pike—Faculty advisers The first of December brought forth the important BLUE MOON Fair. It was an even more gala day because once again the Fair was held during peace-time. To carry out the forthcoming holiday mood, the Christmas decorations with the traditional tree as the center attraction highlighted the Fair.

The usual tables of gifts, food, books, and flowers afforded opportunities for Christmas shoppers. The United Nations Gift Shop reminded us that the people of the world were still in distress.

We are grateful to our faculty advisers for their unremitting aid. We thank the Social Committee, the Library Committee, the BLUE MOON Board, and the Community Chest for their cooperation in making this the best fair yet. Thanks are also extended to the whole school, students and faculty alike.

Miss MILLER—Director and Faculty adviser This year the Glee Club has been directed by Miss Dorothy Miller. The voice tryouts were a little more difficult than usual, but the Glee Club profited by them.

Our first public appearance occurred at the time of the Christmas pageant. The Glee Club's participation contributed to the fine success of that affair. In keeping with the spirit of Christmas, we also sang carols to the patients at City Hospital.

We again appeared on April 14 of this year, when we sang at Old South Congregational Church. This was a new experience for the Glee Club, and we enjoyed it a great deal.

We are at present working on the Cantata, "I Hear America Singing", by Harvey Gaul. We hope to perform this at a musical assembly on May 7. We then have Award Day and Commencement before us. On May 3, a group of boys from Worcester Academy are going to appear with us at a joint concert at the school.

With warm thanks to Miss Miller for her assistance, the Glee Club brings to a close a most successful year.

Miss Miller—Director During the year the Madrigals have given a few performances.

Our first important appearance was at Thanksgiving, when we sang "Bless This House". The next activity was the annual Christmas pageant which was held on December 21.

After the mental torture of mid-term exams we had a concert with the Worcester Academy boys. We were rewarded for our singing by a dance and refreshments.

Our next program was May 7. It was a musical assembly at which the Glee Club also sang. In this same month we invited Worcester Academy to our school for a concert. We had a very nice time. The dancing after the concert was especially enjoyed by all.

On Award Day, we are going to give our last musical program.

It is rather sad to think about it that way, but I am sure that, with the able supervision and the excellent leadership which Miss Miller possesses, the Madrigals of next year will be a success.

The Blue-Grey competition started off again in the usual way with the Blues ahead 7-2 at the end of the fall season. But with the victories of the Lower and Middle schools and of the first team basketball game, the Greys reached the 10-point mark. The second team basketball game was won by the Blues, making the score at the present time 10-9. A possibility of 15 points remains.

Who will be the winner? Only time will tell.

The Upper School took advantage of the opportunity to see Maurice Evans' "Hamlet" when it was in Boston. We also enjoyed the Clark University Players' presentation of "Twelfth Night" and the play, "Youth Takes Over", which was given by the North High School Dramatic Club.

Several members of the Dramatic Club took part in the traditional Christmas Pageant, which was based on the Biblical Story and supplemented by the singing of Chris'mas music by the Glee Club. Unfortunately, Shirley Mitchell, who was portraying Joseph, was ill, and her place was capably filled by Marilyn Penney.

We are all looking forward to the annual Glee Club, Dramatic Club Picnic, which will be held this year as usual on the day before Class Day. P. P. 65

BASKETBALL The basketball team has had a much fuller year than ever before. In two games with Becker Junior College, our team had had more practice and therefore we won both by quite a large margin. However, we lost in the two Lincoln games to a more experienced team, but it didn't dampen our spirits and we had a wonderful time renewing acquaintances with girls we had last seen a year ago. We are all proud of our three freshman forwards —we would have been lost without them.
