Discomforts/Problems Problem 1: Lack of Ceiling Fan Without a ceiling fan in the room, the bedroom gets hot relatively fast. Turning on the air conditioning 24 hours a day would not be efficient. In addition to that, without a ceiling fan, there is no proper air circulation around the room. Placing a standard ceiling fan of 1100mm in the room would be sufficient. It is required to install a single gang switch for the ceiling fan to function. Problem 2: Minimal Lighting There are only 4 ceiling lights in my room and it gets relatively dim at night. This makes it hard for me to do my work. To overcome this issue, I would put two more 150mm by 150mm square ceiling downlights in the middle of my room. After installing the additional ceiling downlights, it is required to change the existing double gang switch to a triple gang switch for the ceiling downlights to function.

Problem 3: Insufficient Power Outlets in Overall Bedroom My bedroom only consists of 2 power outlets which are placed at inconvenient areas, one behind my bed and the other under my vanity. This is a problem because I have to use a few extension cords around my room to charge multiple appliances at once and it is a safety hazard. An additional two 13A sockets placed behind my study table and by my bedside would reduce the safety hazard.

Problem 4: Yellow Light Ceiling Lighting By having warm yellow lighting in my room, it tends to make it harder to focus and it strains my eyes. Changing the yellow lighting above my study area to white lighting will make the area well lit and comfortable to study.

Problem 5: Placement of A/C Currently, the A/C is placed directly above my desk, so whenever I turn it on while I am studying, the A/C blows directly at my head. This causes me to get cold and uncomfortable easily. I would place the A/C in the opposite corner of my bedroom where it is not directly facing my study area and bed.

Conclusion Based on the heat transfer calculations above, Wall 1 (North Wall) has the highest heat transfer. This is because Wall 1 consists of a large window, and windows generally radiate and conduct heat right through the glass. Due to this large window, it makes the bedroom very hot during the day, therefore making Wall 1 the problematic wall.

PROJECT 2B: PASSIVE/GREEN INSULATION PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

NAME: TAN KA WEY STUDENT ID: 0348356 LECTURER: MS SHARON TEH AI PING DATE: 05 JUNE 2022

Heat Insulation Panel Product Description

This model is a heat insulation panel prototype designed to keep heat out of a room. Below are the design intentions of the proposed heat insulation panel: -

To reduce heat thermal transfer

-

Cost effectiveness and convenience. Materials are affordable and sourced easily.

-

Easy installation

-

Painted with light color so it can reflect light and heat

With reference to the design intentions above, this heat insulation panel is designed to utilize the heat insulation properties of the main material, polyfoam. There are a number of reasons why polyfoam is chosen as the main material for this heat insulation panel. Firstly, polyfoam has a high thermal resistance. This is because it contains millions of air pockets trapped within the foam, making it highly resistant to heat. Because polyfoam is compact, very little moisture is able to penetrate which prevents mold from developing. This material is also easily available and easy to handle.

Product Location

Wall 1, North-facing wall.

Product Materials & Dimensions -

Main Material: Polyfoam [14.5cm (L) x 19.5cm (H)]Inserted into wooden frame.

-

Wooden frame (20.32cm (L) by 25.4cm (H)] as an additional heat insulator. Preserves heat and warmth and can keep cold from moving out of a structure. Wood frame is also used as a layer of protection for the polyfoam and for aesthetic purposes.

-

Cardboard is used as an additional heat insulator as it has poor thermal conductivity. Mainly used for aesthetic purposes as it can be painted on to match space design.

-

Metal hinges (10cm) used to connect panels together and for storage convenience. Allows the two panels to be folded together to save space when not in use.

-

Metal handles placed on both panels for easy installation

Product Dimension

Step-by-Step Process 1. Gather all materials (polyfoam, wooden frame, cardboard, metal hinges, metal handles, velcro strips). 2. Measure and cut out polyfoam to the size of the wooden frame.

3. Stick the polyfoam to the wooden frame using foam glue

4. Measure and cut out cardboard frame and protection layer. Layer and glue them on top of one another.

5. Spray paint the panel to your desired color (brighter colors reflect heat and light more than darker colors).

6. Join 2 panels together by attaching metal hinges.

7. Attach handles at the back of the 2 panels.

8. Stick on velcro strips using double sided tape.

9. Finish.

Method of Installation Velcro strips are placed at both ends of the panels and also on the window itself.

Enhanced Features -

Can be painted or drawn on to match space aesthetic

-

Acts as an additional wall, able to hang or pin items on it

-

Easy and fast installation process

Cost of 1 Panel Wood Frame: RM18.00 Polyfoam Board: RM0.80 Metal Hinge: RM3.50 / 2 = RM1.75 Metal Handle: RM2.80 / 2 = RM1.40 Velcro Strip: RM5.90 x 2 = RM11.80 Total Cost per Panel: RM33.75 Size of Panel = 8 inches x 10 inches = 80 inches = 0.56 ft2 Window Area = 24.1 ft 2 Approximate no. of Panels = 24.1 ft2 / 0.56 ft2 = 43 panels Approximate Cost to Cover Window with Panels = 43 x RM33.75 = RM1451.25

Design Value Total Amount: RM958.10 Average Market Acceptance Price: RM958.10 / 23 Design Value: RM41.70 - RM33.75 = RM7.95

Reflection This assignment required us to calculate the heat transfer of our chosen space as well as to create a model to tackle the ‘problematic’ wall. Before proceeding with the model, I first drew up a draft on what I wanted the model to look like. I did not want to create a model with many puzzle pieces as it would not be convenient for the user. If I had the right tools and better materials, I believe I could enhance my current model.

Based on the average market acceptance price, I think that this panel is something that people would buy and use. Though it may not be a necessity, I feel that this panel would be useful in everyday life. All in all, I enjoyed this project and would plan it out better in the future.

FINAL PROJECT: DESIGN OF BUILDING SERVICES

NAME: TAN KA WEY STUDENT ID: 0348356 LECTURER: MS SHARON TEH AI PING DATE: 4 JULY 2022

TASK 1 (A): SITE SELECTION & QUALITATIVE DESCRIPTION OF INCORPORATED BUILDING SERVICES

BUILDING FUNCTION Potter’s Tale is an event space where exhibitions, competitions, and workshops about pottery will be held. The idea of Potter’s Tale is to allow people to understand more about pottery. The pottery exhibition takes people through the history of pottery as well as the process of it. The workshops and competitions allow people to have hands-on experience with making pottery.

Potter’s Tale is located on the 2nd and 2nd mezzanine floor of the building. In this report, I will only be focusing on the spaces of the 2nd floor. This level consists of the reception area, exhibition space, and washroom.

DESCRIPTION OF SPACES 1. Main Entrance & Reception

Perspective 1 & 2: Main Entrance / Reception

The main entrance and reception is an important part of Potter’s Tale, therefore it should be bright and welcoming. Pendant lights are placed above the reception table while downlights will be placed around the main entrance and reception space. Each lighting is evenly spaced out to ensure that the space is well lit.

2. Exhibition

Perspective 3 & 4: Exhibition Space

The exhibition space consists of many different display cases to showcase pottery. With that in mind, there are multiple varying lightings in the space. The exhibition space is the largest area within this floor, therefore there are also multiple air-conditioning units in the space itself.

3. Public Unisex Washroom

Perspective 5 & 6: Public Unisex Washroom

The public washroom consists of multiple downlights as well as a pendant light for aesthetic purposes. Within this area, there are also vents to allow air flow within the washroom.

Lighting for Public Washroom: 800 lm/ft2 The oval pendant light serves as a main light and it is also used for aesthetic purposes. Since the public washroom is an enclosed space with no natural light, the pendant light will need to have higher lumens to be able to fully light up the washroom.

VAC Ceiling Exposed Air Conditioning Location: Main Entrance / Reception, Exhibition

Air Conditioning Sizing Calculation for Main Entrance / Reception *Measurements of the Main Entrance / Reception Area are an estimate as they contain curved walls. Room area = 6816mm x 3600mm = 264.12 ft² Btu/hr = 264.12 ft² x 25 = 6603 Btu/hr

Ceiling height = 6000mm = 19.7ft (Add 1000 Btu/hr for each foot if ceiling is over 8 feet tall)

Btu/hr = 11 ft x 1000 = 11,000 Btu/hr

Estimated No. of Occupants: 8 Btu/hr = 8 people x 500 Btu/hr = 4000 Btu/hr

Estimated heat from electrical appliances Desktop PC: 600 W // Lightings: 100W Btu/hr = 700W x 3.415 = 2390.5 Btu/hr

Total Btu/hr = (6603 + 11,000 + 4000 + 2390.5) Btu/hr = 23,993.5 Btu/hr Horsepower = 23,993.5 Btu/hr

➗ 9800

= 2.45 HP

Air Conditioning Sizing Calculation for Exhibition Space *Measurements of the Exhibition Space are an estimate as they contain curved walls. Room Area = (8110mm x 6816mm) + (4100mm x 13025mm) = 1169.6 ft² Btu/hr = 1169.6 ft² x 25 = 29,240 Btu/hr

Ceiling height = 6000mm = 19.7 ft

(Add 1000 Btu/hr for each foot if ceiling is over 8 feet tall) Btu/hr = 11 ft x 1000 = 11,000 Btu/hr

Estimated No. of Occupants = 15 Btu/hr = 15 people x 500 Btu/hr = 7500 Btu/hr

Estimated heat from electrical appliances Lightings : 40W Btu/hr = 40W x 3.415 = 136.6 Btu/hr

Total Btu/hr = (29,240 + 11,000 + 7500 + 136.6) Btu/hr = 47,876.6 Btu/hr Horsepower = 47,876.6 Btu/hr

➗ 9800

= 4.89 HP

Based on the calculations above, the horsepower required for each room is 2.45hp and 4.89hp respectively. Referring to the nearest commercially available unit, the reception area should have a 3 horsepower air-conditioning unit whereas the exhibition space should have a 5 horsepower air-conditioning unit to ensure that both spaces maintain cool and comfortable temperatures.

TASK 1 (B1.2) : QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE JUSTIFICATION This space is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.daily. Suppose all lightings and air-conditioning units are in use during the duration of opening hours, which is 10 hours. Below are the respective calculations.

Table 1. Monthly Energy Use and Bill

The table above shows the total monthly bill and energy usage for the space. On an average day, about 20kWhr, RM10, is used for electricity. The total bill for one month, assuming there are 30 days, is about RM296. Among all the electrical appliances, the Daikin air-conditioning unit takes up most of the bill, as it is required to maintain the interior cool and comfortable temperature.
