480 homes. 3,000 neighbors. Two national awards.

USAging has honored Baltimore County for two programs that work on aging from opposite ends – the safety of your home, and the strength of your community. Together they answer one question: what does it actually take to grow old in the place you chose? Most people do not decide to leave the home they love. They get pushed. A step becomes a hazard. A bathroom becomes a risk. Or nothing physical changes at all – the neighbors move away, the phone stops ringing, and a house that used to be full becomes a house that is quiet. Baltimore County has spent the last several years working on both halves of that problem. This summer, the country noticed. The Baltimore County Department of Aging has received two 2026 USAging Aging Innovations and Achievement Awards – national honors given to Area Agencies on Aging whose work other communities should copy. One award went to a program that makes homes safer. The other went to a network that makes communities closer. Nationwide, USAging honored 49 programs this year: 16 Innovations Awards and 33 Achievement Awards, drawn from a network of more than 600 Area Agencies on Aging. Baltimore County won one of each. “These award-winning programs reflect the ingenuity, dedication and local leadership of Area Agencies on Aging across the country,” said Sandy Markwood, CEO of USAging. “They show what is possible when communities invest in the innovative approaches that Area Agencies on Aging develop to respond to the real

needs of older adults and caregivers, and we are proud to celebrate the organizations leading this important work.” Making the homes safer

The Baltimore County AgeFriendly Upgrades for Seniors program – BCAUSE – received the Aging Innovations Award for home and community-based services. BCAUSE helps older adults with limited incomes stay in their homes through critical repairs and accessibility work: grab bars, ramps, safer bathrooms, repaired steps. It is a partnership between the Department of Aging, nonprofit housing organizations and private philanthropic funders. What makes it unique is the process. Every applicant moves through one central intake and an occupational therapy assessment, so the work matches what that person actually needs in that house – not a standard checklist. Since 2020, BCAUSE has served 480 Baltimore County households. The average participant is 75 years old and lives on $26,508 a year. Those numbers matter. Falls are the leading cause of injury among adults 65 and older, and a single fall is often the event that ends independent living. By removing the hazard first, BCAUSE helps older adults avoid unnecessary hospitalizations and delays – sometimes preventing the move to long-term care. The program works because of its partners: Civic Works, CHAI – Comprehensive Housing Assistance, Inc. and Rebuilding Together Baltimore. Making communities strong The Villages of Baltimore County received the Aging Achievement Award for community planning and livable communities – a category that recognizes programs effective enough for other communities to replicate. The Villages are a volunteer-driven network of community organizations that help older adults age in place while strengthening the communities around them. Since launching in September 2024, six culturally diverse Villages have engaged more than 3,000 older adults and mobilized more than 250 volunteers. The Villages include the following:

Baltimore County Department of Aging’s Eram Abbasi and Kim High, with Civic Works partners Lauren Averella and Jordan Hebron in San Diego, where Baltimore County received two 2026 USAging Aging Innovations and Achievement Awards.

• BANA Village serving the Nepalese community; • CAPA-BC Village – serving the Chinese-American community; • Elimu Village – serving older adults from East African communities; • Golden Age Village – operated by the Islamic Society of Baltimore; • Neighborhood Companions, Inc. – Turner Station, Dundalk; and • Village Incorporated – Hawthorne, Essex and Middle River. Each Village reflects the culture and traditions of the community it serves. All six share one goal: places where older adults are connected, valued and supported. At Golden Age Village, that work starts with teenagers. High school students at Al-Rahmah School teach technology classes as part of a leadership course, helping older adults use smartphones, tablets, email and video calling to stay in touch with family, friends and their doctors. The students arrive prepared to teach. They tend to leave having learned as much as they taught. At CAPA-BC, belonging is built in the kitchen. Intergenerational cooking classes bring grandparents, parents and children together to prepare traditional dishes and pass down family recipes. Ballroom dancing and cultural celebrations do the rest. In Turner Station, Neighborhood Companions, Inc. works from a simple premise: neighborhoods are stronger when neighbors know one another. Partnerships with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts bring young people into service projects and community events, and the monthly Second Sunday Suppers have become gatherings where residents of every generation share a meal. Every Village serves a different population. All of them prove the

same point: communities are stronger when generations know one another. These are not just activities. They build trust, reduce loneliness, preserve traditions and remind every participant – at any age – that they have something to contribute. Why it takes both A safe house in a community where no one knows your name is not enough. And the closest-knit community in Baltimore County does not help much if the stairs to your own front door are a hazard. That is why these two awards belong in the same story. BCAUSE protects the place people call home. The Villages build the community people call family. Together, they describe what Baltimore County means by aging well. “Receiving two USAging awards is a tremendous honor for Baltimore County because it recognizes the power of collaboration,” said Heang K. Tan, Director of the Baltimore County Department of Aging. “These programs demonstrate what is possible when local government, community organizations, volunteers and residents work together to develop innovative solutions that help older adults remain independent, connected and engaged. We are grateful to our partners who share our vision of making Baltimore County a place where everyone can age with confidence and dignity.” “The recognition is welcome,” Director Tan added. “But the measure of this work is not an award. It is whether an older adult in Dundalk or Owings Mills or Parkville can stay in the home they chose, in the community they know, for as long as they want to.”

engAGE: A new name, the same powerful mission

TIME OF YOUR LIFE  MID-AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2026

What’s in a name? Sometimes, it can say everything. This September, the Baltimore County Department of Aging is proud to introduce engAGE: A Day of Sharing Meals and Building Connections, the new name for the event many have come to know as No Senior Eats Alone Day. While the name has changed, the heart of the event has not. For years, No Senior Eats Alone Day has encouraged our community to reach out to older adults through the simple act of sharing a meal. Those meals have sparked conversations, created friendships, and reminded people that they are valued members of our community. Now, the Department of Aging is embracing a name that reflects a more modern and positive view of aging. The new name – engAGE – celebrates the many ways older adults continue to learn, volunteer, lead, connect, and enrich our communities every day. Rather than focusing on what older adults may be lacking, engAGE highlights the opportunities to build relationships, strengthen communities, and celebrate the vitality that comes with every stage of life. At its core, however, the mission remains unchanged. Social isolation and loneliness continue to affect the health and well-being of many older adults. Research has shown that meaningful social connections can improve both physical and mental health, reduce stress, and enhance overall quality of life. Sometimes, all it takes to make a difference is sitting down for a meal and taking the time to listen. That’s why, on Thursday, September 10, the Department of Aging is inviting everyone to participate in engAGE Day. Enjoy lunch and companionship at one of Baltimore County’s 20 senior centers or stay connected through our virtual senior center, OPAL. Invite a neighbor to share a meal. Gather with family members across generations. Support a participating local restaurant. Visit an older adult who may appreciate the company, or organize a meal at your place of worship, community organization, or neighborhood gathering space. Every shared meal is an opportunity to build a connection. engAGE Day is about creating moments that matter – whether that’s welcoming someone new to a senior center, reconnecting with an old friend, or simply making sure someone knows they are not alone. As Baltimore County’s older adult population continues to grow, building stronger social connections has never been more important. Together, we can create a community where everyone feels welcomed, included, and engaged. The name may be new, but the invitation is the same: pull up a chair, share a meal, start a conversation, 2 and help build a more connected

Baltimore County. There is no single way to celebrate engAGE Day. Across Baltimore County, opportunities to connect will be happening in communities large and small. Get involved with engAGE Day

Visit a Baltimore County Senior Center. All 20 senior centers will welcome members and first-time visitors to enjoy lunch, activities and fellowship. If you’ve never visited a senior center before, engAGE Day is the perfect opportunity to experience everything today’s centers have to offer. Invite someone to lunch. Ask a friend, neighbor, family member or coworker to share a meal with you. Sometimes the simplest invitation can brighten someone’s entire day. Support local restaurants. Many restaurants throughout Baltimore County will be participating by offering special meal deals and promo-

tions. It’s a great way to enjoy a meal while supporting local businesses and encouraging community connections. To view the current list of meal deals for engAGE Day, you can visit www. baltimorecountymd.gov/departments/ aging/programs-services/engage-day. Gather in your neighborhood or network. Faith communities, civic groups, community organizations and neighborhoods are encouraged to host breakfasts, lunches, potlucks or coffee gatherings that bring people together. Volunteer your time. Deliver a meal, visit an older neighbor, stop by a long-term care facility to visit with a resident that may not regularly have guests, or help someone get to a community event. Even a short visit can make a meaningful impact. engAGE Day is about more than one meal. It is about creating a culture where older adults feel seen, valued and connected every day of the year. As Baltimore County’s older adult population continues to grow,

strengthening social connections is becoming increasingly important. The Department of Aging is committed to building communities where every older adult has opportunities to engage, contribute and thrive. Whether you attend an event at your local senior center, enjoy dinner at a participating restaurant, organize a neighborhood gathering, or simply invite someone to share a meal, your participation helps create a stronger, more connected Baltimore County. Join us on September 10 as we celebrate the power of connection – one conversation, one meal, and one new friendship at a time. Please use #engAGE if you share a meal and post on social media. For information about senior center events and community activities, visit the website or call 410-887-2002.

Get Ready! Get Set! Get Fit! 5K/1 Mile

Whether you’re chasing a personal best, enjoying a leisurely walk or simply cheering from the sidelines, the 20th Annual Get Ready! Get Set! Get Fit! 5K Run/One-Mile Walk is the perfect way to celebrate healthy aging and support older adults in Baltimore County. Join us on Sunday, September 20, at CCBC Essex for a morning filled with energy, encouragement and community spirit. This milestone event welcomes participants of all ages and abilities, making it the perfect opportunity to invite your grandchildren, gather your family, or form a team with friends and neighbors. Even if running or walking isn’t for you, your cheers from the sidelines help create an exciting atmosphere for every participant. Every registration helps support health and wellness programming offered by the Baltimore County Department of Aging. Proceeds from the event fund fitness classes, wellness education, fitness center equipment and active aging opportunities that help older adults stay strong, independent and connected throughout the year. “Every step taken at this event helps strengthen the health and well-being of older adults throughout Baltimore County,” said Tom Jeffries, Wellness Specialist for the Baltimore County Department of Aging. “Whether you’re running for a personal goal, walking with loved ones or cheering others on, you’re helping create opportunities for older adults to stay active, engaged and healthy. Together, we’re building a stronger, healthier community.” The Get Ready! Get Set! Get Fit! event is more than a race – it’s a celebration of active living. Grandparents can make memories by walking with grandchildren, friends can challenge

one another across the finish line, and families can spend a fun, healthy morning together while supporting an important cause. As an additional benefit, participants can take advantage of a variety of free health screenings and wellness education offered by local colleges and community partners. Students and faculty from area health professions programs will provide valuable screenings and educational resources designed to help participants better understand their health and reduce their risk of falls. Learn practical fall prevention strategies, discover simple ways to improve balance and mobility, and connect with experts who can answer questions about maintaining your health as you age. It’s a great opportunity to gain important health insights. “The Department of Aging is proud to partner with local colleges to bring these important health services to our community. These partnerships not only help older adults better understand their health, but they also give future healthcare professionals meaningful opportunities to learn directly from the people they will one day serve,” stated Donna Bilz, Program and Wellness Specialist for

the Department of Aging. All participants will be entered into the popular Fitness Pays drawing for a chance to win valuable gift cards ranging from $100 or $200 from Van Dyke and Bacon Shoes. It’s another exciting reason to join the fun while supporting programs that help older adults thrive. The Baltimore County Department of Aging extends sincere appreciation to the generous sponsors whose support makes this event possible: the Community College of Baltimore County, Whiting-Turner, Maryland Medicare 101, Oakwood Care Center, Baltimore Coffee and Tea, Consistent Home Care, Maryland Relay, Van Dyke and Bacon Shoes, Concierge Home Care of Maryland, Herr’s Foods, Mid-Atlantic Medical Supply and Equipment, Charm City Run, Comcast and the Time of Your Life Digest. Whether you cross the finish line, enjoy a scenic walk, or encourage participants along the course, you’ll be making a difference in the lives of older adults across Baltimore County. Register today, bring your family and friends, and help us celebrate 20 years of promoting health, wellness and active aging – one step at a time!

MASC awards celebrate Senior Center excellence By Doug Larocca, Public Information Specialist, Baltimore County Department of Aging

OPAL, Runner-Up, Expressive Creative Art, Reflective Writing for Seniors Consistently one of the Online Programs for Adult Learning’s (OPAL) most popular programs, Reflective Writing for Seniors, has earned recognition from the Maryland Association of Senior Centers in the category of Expressive Creative Art. “Reflective Writing for Seniors is more than just a creative writing group. This group is a warm, safe, environment, and no one needs to have past experience or training in creative writing,” says Rochelle Naiman, the experienced educator who instructs the class. “This is not a group to improve one’s literary abilities. It’s writing for gaining self-knowledge and reflection.” Sessions often begin with benign, open-ended prompts such as “What color am I?” or “What is my ideal en-

vironment,” or “If I were a zoo animal what would I be?” “The mind is very complicated,” explains Naiman. “After one has lived a long time, one has collected successes, failures, pain and some trauma along the way. Trauma certainly can help make us forget. So fun, light, creative activities are almost like a trick. They’re a tool to open up the self-understanding, the realization, the inside of the memory. The indirect method of creative writing allows us to realize and process life events to gain greater insight.” Lauren Mirkin, who joined OPAL specifically for this program, attests to the power of writing as a means of self-reflection, stating “It gives you the time to look within, think deeply about how you’re feeling, and forge a direction in life.”

of steamed crabs. During the show, Parkville Senior Center remains open, showcasing its program offerings and gift shop to prospective members. Each year averages roughly 90 vehicles in attendance, with the record being set at 122. With over 20 awards up for grabs, there’s something for every automotive enthusiast, whether they’re into hot rods, muscle cars, domestics, imports, trucks and more! Best of all, many of the trophies are fashioned in-house, in the form of wooden plaques handmade by volunteers in the Parkville Senior Center woodshop. In all, it takes the effort of 33 volunteers to make Hot August Night a success each year. “Without the help from the volunteers, none of this happens. Getting this award means a lot to all of us,” says Mr. Grey.

A staple event of the Harford Road corridor since 1990, Parkville Senior Center’s Hot August Night Car Show was a runner-up in the fundraising category. The show was initially organized by a local automotive enthusiast group, Street Cars of Desire, and subsequently passed down to another group, the Raging Rats. Both groups organized the show and held them on Parkville Senior Center’s asphalt, donating funds to the center. Hot August Night regularly nets approximately $3000 for Parkville Senior Center, through registration fees, food cooked by center members, local sponsorships and a raffle for donated items, including a bushel

Seven Oaks Senior Center has been partnering with nearby Seven Oaks Elementary for years in a relationship benefiting both children and older adults through intergenerational connection. Every Tuesday, Seven Oaks members volunteer as Reading Buddies, making the short walk to the school next door to read to, and be read to by the students. This program provides fulfillment and purpose to the older adults who participate, as well as improving the reading skills and confidence of their younger counterparts through their extra attention and encouragement. “I like seeing the kids interact with the older adults,” says Karen McDonough, Director of the Seven Oaks Senior Center. “It really brightens our members’ day when they interact with the children.” In addition to Reading Buddies, Seven Oaks Elementary recently founded the Kindness Club. Comprised of thirty students and teachers, the club has visited the senior center to pair up with members to color posters. The posters can be found decorating the walls of Seven Oaks Senior Center, a reminder of this special day of connection. This is an edited version of the article and photos. The skilled craftswomen of Ateaze Senior Center’s Knifty Knitters and Crocheting Critters have been recognized for the love and warmth they radiate into the world around them, one stitch at a time. Their recent campaign, Lovies for Law Enforcement, tasked the group with creating “Lovies,” which are essentially plush animals placed snugly within a customcrocheted cocoon. These small tokens of kindness were then distributed to Baltimore County Police Officers to place in their patrol vehicles, who would then have them to give to children they may come across in stressful It’s all smiles at Seven Oaks when students from the neighboring school pay a visit.

MID-AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2026  TIME OF YOUR LIFE

First debuting in November 2024, the Arbutus Senior Center has hosted a Classic Costume Jewelry Sale annually in order to raise funds for programming and to reduce class registration costs. Brenda Goodrich-Lawson, a member of Arbutus Senior Center, is credited with coming up with the idea, now in its third year. Center members, as well as the greater Arbutus community, were asked to donate any spare costume jewelry they no longer needed to the center. There, Ms. Goodrich-Lawson and fellow volunteers could organize, clean and prepare the items for sale. “The idea was that everybody likes something new, but not everybody has a lot of money,” says Alice Donahue, Director of the Arbutus Senior Center. “Why not give everyone a chance to buy something new, while also fundraise to support our programs?” The first sale was a huge success, with the Center receiving ample donations. Striving to ensure the sale was enjoyable and accessible for all, each item was priced modestly, ranging anywhere from $0.50 to $30 apiece. While the event explicitly called for the sale of costume jewelry, finer gold and silver pieces still made their way to the donation bin. Rather than selling these pieces at the fundraiser, Brenda came up with the idea to sell them at a local jewelry store, adding their collective value to the total funds raised from the event. This transaction sparked an ongoing partnership with the local jewelry store, which now features a donation bin for costume jewelry to donate to the Arbutus jewelry sale.

scenarios they are often called to. “We’re for anything that brings joy or comfort to people, to relax them in trying times. That’s what we’re all about,” says Veronica “Ronnie” Schuman, a member of the group. In addition to Lovies for Law Enforcement, the group at Ateaze regularly makes crafts for hospitals, crisis centers, and other organizations where there’s often someone who could use a smile. “We are always searching for new opportunities to donate the crafts we love to make,” says Ronnie. “We are always looking for programs where we can make children and adults feel happy.” Once a program is finished, members of the group immediately set to work finding a new cause to craft for, like their most recent venture with a local NICU unit. Together, the Knifty Knitters and Crocheting Critters created 600 felt hearts for parents to wear and imbue with their scent, placing them in their children’s incubators so that they can feel the presence of their mother and father. “It was a very big group effort,” says Ronnie. Readers inspired by this program are more than welcome to join in on the cause at Ateaze Senior Center. “If you don’t know how to crochet, and would like to learn, our door is open,” says Ronnie. “We will teach you so you can experience the same joy we all do.”

r e n r o C r e v Caregi

Invest in a journey to find balance and fulfillment By Kathleen Koenig-Stoffel, Caregiver Support Program Manager, Baltimore County Department of Aging

Caregiving is a journey filled with both challenges and rewards. It requires immense dedication, compassion and selflessness to care for others who may be unable to care for themselves. As a caregiver, you play a vital role in the lives of those you care for, providing essential support and assistance. However, caregiving can also be physically and emotionally demanding. It is essential to navigate this journey while maintaining a sense of balance and fulfillment. This means taking care of yourself, building a support network, managing stress and burnout, finding meaning and fulfillment, and seeking personal growth. The first step in finding balance and fulfillment as a caregiver is understanding the importance of self-care. It is crucial to prioritize your own wellbeing and take care of your physical, mental, and emotional health. Just as you dedicate yourself to caring for others, it is equally important to care for yourself. Remember, you cannot pour from an empty cup. Building a support network is an-

other key aspect of finding balance and fulfillment. Surrounding yourself with people who understand the challenges of caregiving can provide invaluable emotional support. They can offer a listening ear, share experiences, and provide practical advice. Whether it’s friends, family members, support groups, or online communities, having a strong support network can make a significant difference in your caregiving journey. Managing stress and burnout is crucial for maintaining balance and fulfillment. Caregiving can be physically and emotionally exhausting, and it is essential to recognize the signs of stress and burnout. Natural cortisol-lowering techniques focus on reducing chronic stress through lifestyle and mind-body practices. Five techniques are as follows: Deep Breathing and Meditation: Practicing deep breathing for five minutes, three to five times a day, can significantly lower cortisol. Mindfulness-based stress reduction, yoga, and tai chi are also highly effective. Quality Sleep: Maintain a strict sleep schedule, aiming for seven to nine hours to allow cortisol levels to follow their natural daily rhythm.

Spotlight on Caregiving

Nature Therapy: Spend time outdoors, including “forest bathing” (walking in the woods), which can lower stress hormones. Connection and Laughter: Spend time with loved ones and engage in laughter to reduce stress. Pet Therapy: Interacting with pets has been shown to reduce cortisol levels. Seeking professional help is also essential when caregiving responsibilities become overwhelming. Professional assistance and counseling can provide valuable guidance and support. There are various resources and support services available specifically for caregivers, including respite care, which allows you to take regular breaks and recharge.

Lastly, finding meaning and fulfillment in the caregiving journey is vital. Embracing gratitude, finding purpose in your role as a caregiver, and celebrating small victories can help you find fulfillment amidst the challenges. It is also essential to set emotional boundaries to protect your mental and emotional well-being. The journey of caregiving is not without its obstacles, but it can also be a transformative experience. By managing guilt, overcoming challenges, and embracing personal growth, you can navigate this journey while finding a sense of balance and fulfillment. Remember, you are making a difference in the lives of those you care for, and taking care of yourself is just as important.
