Baltimore County Department of Aging would like to remind all guests at Expo to safeguard their personal contact, credit card and insurance information. It is tempting to share your data with companies to get a chance to win a prize and/or get a free service, but you need to watch for red flags. If a company asks you to share information with them, it is your right to ask them what they do with the data collected. From their answer, it is your decision to weigh whether the benefit outweighs the risk. For instance, you may want to enter a raffle for a prize; but the company may use that same information to do cold calls looking for business. Or, if a company is offering a valuable screening covered by Medicare, you would need to share your Medicare number in order to get the results for your physician. Remember, better safe than sorry!

something for everyone. Your entrance to Expo can make a real difference in someone’s life. As has been tradition, entry is either a donation of two non-perishable food items or $2. All food that is collected will be given to the Community Assistance Network (CAN); a Baltimore County-based non-profit that provides programs to help low-income families move towards self-sufficiency. The donations will stock the shelves of their Community Choice Pantry, which provides a one-week supply of healthy food options to those in need. Volunteers will be available by the front door to accept and pack the food. During last year’s Expo, more than 3,000 pounds of food was collected and we hope to reach that amount once again this year! Let’s fill those bins and lift up our community together! Please be sure all donations are within the expiration date and are not opened or dented. Visit www.powerofageexpo.com for the latest list of sponsors, exhibitors, and schedule

Vascular Surgery Associates (VSA) is proud to sponsor and participate in this year’s event, where one of our board-certified vascular surgeons will provide multiple educational presentations introducing attendees to innovative, minimally invasive treatment options for chronic joint and musculoskeletal pain. Musculoskeletal embolization is designed to reduce abnormal blood flow associated with inflammation and pain. Using a small catheter and microscopic particles, our specialists selectively target tiny blood vessels contributing to inflammation – without traditional surgery or general anesthesia. VSA offers embolization treatment for several common conditions that can interfere with mobility and quality of life, including knee and shoulder arthritis, tennis and golfer’s elbow, plantar fasciitis, and Achilles tendinitis. Attendees are invited to visit the Vascular Surgery Associates booth to meet our team, learn more about these treatment options, and pick up valuable information about vascular and musculoskeletal health. To learn more about this care option for your knee pain, you can attend one of their presentations at Expo in North Hall at the following times: 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Less pain. Growing older brings many opportunities to enjoy new experiences, strengthen relationships and remain connected to the community. It also brings important decisions that are easier to make when we plan ahead. Preplanning allows us to think about our future while we are healthy, independent and able to clearly communicate our wishes. It means having conversations about the choices we may face later – and making sure the people we trust understand what is important to us. Some of these conversations can be difficult. We may not want to talk about illness, declining independence or end-of-life decisions. However, avoiding these conversations can leave family members and caregivers facing difficult decisions without knowing what their loved one would have wanted. Taking the time to document your wishes at the end of life and talking with family members, trusted friends and professionals can provide peace of mind for you and those who may one

FutureCare: Celebrating 40 years of client care
Since 1986, FutureCare has been Maryland’s trusted leader in rehabilitation and skilled nursing. This year we celebrate our 40th anniversary, four decades of helping people across the Baltimore/Washington region recover from surgery, illness, and injury and get back to the lives they had before. FutureCare operates 16 rehabilitation and skilled nursing centers throughout the area, so there is likely one close to your home and your family. Every center brings together experienced clinical staff, cutting-edge equipment, and progressive therapies, along with the practical guidance families need during what is often a stressful time. After 40 years, our commitment has not changed: getting you back home faster, stronger, and more confident than ever. Not every recovery looks the same, so we have built specialized programs around the conditions we see most often. WalkStrong provides orthopedic rehabilitation, helping you regain strength, balance, and mobility after a joint replacement, a fall, or another injury or surgery. STANDStrong is our nationally certified stroke rehabilitation program. BreatheStrong delivers pulmonary rehabilitation for those managing a chronic breathing condition. CAMPStrong offers amputee management and rehabilitation. HeartStrong is our nationally certified cardiac rehabilitation program, helping you learn to manage the long-term effects of heart disease. What these programs have in common is a plan built around your particular situation rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Your therapy team takes the time to learn what you were able to do before and what matters most to you, then builds your therapy around it. Recovery also does not have to stop when you walk out the door. VitalStrong, our outpatient rehabilitation program, is available at many of our locations throughout the Baltimore area. The weeks right after you go home are often when progress slows down, and that is exactly when continuing your therapy makes the biggest difference. With VitalStrong you keep working with a team that already knows you and your goals, so there is no waiting and no starting over with someone new. Please stop by booth 123 here at the Power of Age Expo and say hello. We would be glad 18
to answer your questions and tell you more about any of our programs. You are also always welcome to visit a FutureCare center, walk through the therapy gym, and meet the people who would be caring for you. Seeing a place for yourself is the best way to know whether it is the right fit, whether you are planning ahead for a scheduled surgery or helping a family member make a decision. To find a location near you or to schedule a tour, please visit FutureCare.com.
Don’t miss a screening
Health screenings enable you to find out if you have a particular condition even if you do not have any symptoms and/or signs of disease. What is a health screening? Health screenings are important to everyone. It involves the use of tests, physical examinations or other procedures to detect disease early in people who may look or feel well. Why should I go for a health screening? Early detection, followed by treatment and good control of the condition can result in better outcomes and lowers the risk of serious complications. It is important to get yourself screened even if you feel perfectly healthy. What kind of screening tests should I go for? You should take advantage of all health screenings offered. It could save your life. The Power of Age Expo is a great place to take advantage of a multitude of free screenings. Various vendors at Expo will offer free screenings. What should I do after a health screening? If your screening results are normal, you should continue to go for regular screenings at the recommended frequency because screenings only detect health conditions that are present at the time of the screening. If you develop signs or symptoms after your screening, please see your doctor – do not wait for your next screening appointment. If your screening results are abnormal, you should follow-up with your doctor immediately.

Veterans’ Muster brings key veteran resources
In partnership with the Baltimore County Commission on Veterans’ Affairs, the Baltimore County Department of Aging is pleased to announce a Veterans’ Muster at Expo. The Muster, sponsored by the Commission, is a one-stop shop for veterans and their families to find resources and programs dedicated to those that have served their country. Connecting with veteran resources at any age is important to get the attention that any serviceperson deserves. The Veterans’ Muster at Expo will offer insights and resources for veterans of all ages and their families. “So many veterans out there don’t realize they are eligible for care which makes it so important to let them know what they need to do to follow up on claims and establish service connection,” Michelle Mills, Deputy Director of the Baltimore County Department of Aging stated. “We are proud to gather as many resources as we can for them to stroll through the tables and find valuable information.” Further, you can get up close to history at the Power of Age Expo! Historic military vehicles will be on display, giving visitors the opportunity to admire these remarkable pieces of military history, learn about their stories and snap photos. Whether you’re a longtime military history enthusiast or simply curious about these vintage vehicles, it’s a unique chance to see history up close. Expo looks forward to honoring our veterans and their families with resources and tributes in the Veterans’ Muster area. Please make plans to visit!

Research is key to finding best Medicare Part D plan If you have Medicare prescription drug coverage, one of the most important things you can do each year is take a fresh look at your Part D plan. Even if you have been happy with your coverage for years, your plan – and your prescription needs – can change. Medicare Part D plans can change their premiums, deductibles, copayments, covered medications, pharmacy networks and other costs from one year to the next. At the same time, your own health needs may change. You may be taking a new medication, using a different pharmacy or discovering that a medication you take regularly is no longer covered in the same way. That is why it is important to review your coverage during Medicare’s Annual Open Enrollment Period, October 15 through December 7. Comparing plans can help you determine whether your current coverage continues to be the best fit for your medications and budget. Medicare recommends reviewing your plan’s Annual Notice of Change and comparing your current coverage with other available options. Would another plan provide comparable coverage at a lower overall cost? The plan with the lowest monthly premium isn’t necessarily the plan that will cost you the least over the entire year. Your medications, dosages, pharmacy and other factors can make a significant difference in your total outof-pocket expenses. You Don’t Have to Navigate It Alone. Medicare can be complicated, and comparing prescription drug plans can feel overwhelming. Fortunately, Baltimore County older adults have access to a trusted resource through the Baltimore County Department of Aging’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). SHIP provides free, confidential and unbiased Medicare counseling. SHIP counselors do not sell insurance or work for an insurance company. Instead, trained counselors can help you understand your Medicare options, compare plans and costs, and make an informed decision based on your individual circumstances. So, before automatically renewing your current Part D plan, take a little time to review your coverage. A few minutes of comparison could help you find coverage that better meets your needs – and potentially save you money. For assistance through Baltimore County SHIP, call 410-887-2059.

Baltimore County Department of Aging is pleased to showcase the incredible art and writing talents of our community at the Power of Age Expo. This year’s Creative Arts Contest, themed “Connected By Heart,” attracted talented artists and writers ranging in age from 50 to 100. Within the exhibit, there are seven different categories of art and two categories of writing. Be sure to take time to enjoy these inspiring masterpieces – and cast your vote for Best in Show! Expo guests can vote for their favorite entry until 3 p.m. on October 22. Winners will be announced for each category as well as the Bestin-Show Winner on the main stage at 3:30 p.m. Additionally, winners and runners-up will be featured in the mid-November/December edition of the Time of Your Life Digest for everyone to enjoy. Come celebrate creativity, talent and the many ways we are connected by heart!
