Welcome to the first edition of Darling. What a year it has been! As we head towards Summer with renewed business confidence we are encouraging our wonderful community to support our local businesses.
This magazine is a collaboration of many people – all with one goal, to stay local and shop local. Our local businesses need and love your support, so any Christmas gift you buy, service you use or meal you eat in our neighbourhood means a lot to each and every hard-working business owner. We hope you enjoy the Darling magazine, a celebration of all we have on this great peninsula we call home. The Balmain Rozelle peninsula is really special, it’s a village in a big city. There are so many unique businesses and stories to tell, and that was my goal in developing the Darling magazine – it’s a showcase of all we have. After working in retail marketing and placemaking all my career, I joined the Balmain Rozelle Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee to make a difference to our community.
Darling was born out of love for our community, the old-school village feel and the fact that everything is on our doorstep. Cafés, schools, shops, it’s all here! After years in hospitality and retail marketing I’m excited to be working with the Balmain Rozelle Chamber of Commerce to support local businesses. I trust you’ll enjoy Darling and rediscover the places and people that make up this beautiful neighbourhood.
As a long-time resident and small business owner based in the Balmain Rozelle peninsula it's great to see the Balmain Rozelle Chamber of Commerce encouraging people to get out and about and be reminded that the best of everything is available locally. Designing Darling has provided a great opportunity to connect with other local businesses and share what's so special about our community.
Thank you to our sponsors:
The pandemic has massively impacted local businesses across the Inner West and Council has been taking decisive actions to help residents and local businesses through the crisis. Central to this has been the Inner West Recovery Taskforce, which has brought together local business leaders to coordinate the economic recovery of the Inner West. We support the Balmain Rozelle Chamber of Commerce in initiatives like Darcy Byrne, this, the exciting launch of the Darling Inner West Council Magazine. I urge everyone to stay local Mayor and shop local.

Darling meets long-time business owner Joe to reminisce about the old days. Factories and pubs. This was the Balmain that welcomed Giuseppe Panetta (Joe) when he arrived from Italy 55 years ago. "When we first opened, customers would tell us what they wanted, and we’d get it from behind the counter. That’s how I learnt to speak English", says Joe. Balmain has changed since, but Papa Joe and Co is still part of the community. Today, daughter Luisa is working alongside Joe and the store has developed into a foodie haven showcasing local produce and mamma Maria’s homecooked meals. Papa Joe and Co, 196 Darling St, Balmain.
Helping those doing it tough They say adversity brings people together, and local initiative 20 for 1 is testament it does.
Covid forced many businesses to change overnight. Marco de Angelis, owner of Our Place on Darling, was quick to adapt and received overwhelming support. “People in the area were very generous” says Marco. This inspired Marco to give back to those less fortunate. He contacted Vinnies Rozelle, offering 20 meals for free to locals in need. The Rozelle Neighbourhood Centre got onboard helping expand the program and managing volunteers and logistics. 120 meals and 60 food packs are delivered weekly. “I’m so grateful for the delicious meal and the volunteers always have time for a chat” says one happy recipient. Here to make a SPLASH
When I was 11, I decided to paint a mural on my bedroom wall and my parents didn’t even bat an eyelid
Lara Scolari with a cheeky smile
The daughter of an industrial chemist for a fine art supplier, Lara grew up in Balmain surrounded by tubes of vibrant colour. With a constant supply of paint, Lara’s artist mother would encourage her to use it. And to use it in abundance! This liberal use of paint inspired Lara to become an action painter where paint is deliberately poured or smeared on a canvas. At the age of 20 Lara left Balmain to take up a post at Dubbo Regional Gallery. She fell in love with the flat land, the big skies, and the people, married into a farming family and gave birth to three beautiful boys in four years. Working in arts administration Lara continued to paint but not full time. Following two big regional shows Lara decided to apply for an artist in residence program in Ashfield which she won.
“They gave me a house in Sydney for six months and paid me to paint!” The move didn’t just mean Lara could focus on her art, it also brought her closer to her three sons, now at boarding school in Sydney. In 2014, following her residency Lara had her first solo exhibition at Dank Street Gallery in Sydney’s Waterloo. The exhibition was a sell out and she hasn’t looked back. Following the success, Lara and her husband decided to move back to Sydney where Lara would set up a gallery of her own. They bought a small, three-storey block of flats on Beattie Street in Balmain which they meticulously converted into a home, studio, and gallery. “Returning to the suburb where I grew up has been wonderful. I love the village feel and the harbour is a constant inspiration to me” says Lara.
Named one of Australia’s most exciting emerging contemporary visual artists, Lara is humble about her success. Lara has exhibited at more than 75 group and solo shows both in Australia and overseas and has become the go to artist for some of the world’s leading interior designers, including the award-winning Greg Natale. Depicting organic forms and fluid shapes, Lara’s works are inspired by the Australian landscape and feature a beautiful translucent colour palette achieved by adding up to 40 layers of paint. A sense of fun and energy is present in every one of her works and when meeting Lara, you understand why. Her love of colour, art and family is palpable as is her love of Balmain. Spruce up your home For Sale Four local business owners share their tips on how to get your home looking its best before you go to market.
Property in Balmain and Rozelle will always be in demand. But there are some ways you can make your home even more desirable when it comes to attracting buyers. Here are some tips from the professionals.
Natalie Fryer, m2 Property Presentation De-cluttering your bedrooms and living spaces is a must. It’s amazing how much easier it is to keep rooms tidy when there’s a place for everything. Storage containers for pantries, wardrobes and offices don’t need to be ugly – there are plenty of great looking ones available from Ikea or Kmart. Another tip is to remove your curtains and cushion covers and give them a wash. And consider splurging on a few new cushions to add colour and texture.
Jenny Curtis, Jen’s Garden Styling Outdoor space is precious in our area where space is at a premium. My biggest tip is to try and view your outdoor area with fresh eyes – look for the potential. Culling and pruning now will help make sure your outdoor spaces are looking fabulous. Closer to sale, you need to plan when to do the final additional planting and be sure to use species that will be looking their best when you sell. Add pots of colour to brighten outdoor spaces.

Rick Dyer, Handyman by Rick The Christmas holiday period is a good time to attack those odd jobs that have accumulated over the winter months. Small fix-it jobs can make a big impact to the presentation of your house. Undertaking regular deck maintenance is one of the key areas that can really improve the look and feel of your outdoor space. Make sure you take the time to clean and prepare your deck so that it really absorbs your stain or oil.
Cindy Kennedy, McGrath Real Estate Agents Give your home a thorough deep clean. It makes such a difference. That includes windows too! Hiring professional cleaners can save you hassle. Once your house looks amazing, you need to ensure it presents beautifully online. I like to work closely with our photographers to make sure we get great shots when the light is in both the home and the garden. You should aim to hold open homes at these times too so buyers can see your home at its best.

Q&A We sat down with the owner of Lin & Barrett, Margarita Ivanchenko, who is celebrating 25 years of business in the Inner West! Margarita, your business has just about reached “icon” status on the peninsula: what got you there? A passionate belief in what we do, and just wanting to do it better. Our aim is that every customer walks out of our stores feeling better for having walked in. We
love intimate apparel, and want all our clients to experience quality at every level. What is it that makes your customers happier? Their questions are answered, their needs are met, their wardrobe problems are solved, all with honesty and sincerity. It could be as simple as helping to match hosiery to a new dress, to finding the best fitting bra, and best shape, after a significant body change. What is the biggest change you have seen in the 25 years of operating Lin & Barrett? Technology! I never thought we’d be online - but we are. What a learning curve!
Another aspect of technology is the development of amazing and sustainable new yarns that are taking pressure off our natural resources. This has opened up a whole new world of wearer comfort, sustainability and style. We love bringing these changes to our clients. So, what’s next? Covid has put the brakes on in some ways, but we continue to expand our collections with beautiful products from France, Italy, Spain and other centres of intimate apparel excellence. We’ll continue to extend our size ranges. I don’t want to give too much away, it will spoil the surprises we have in store!
Prima Donna is synonymous with quality, fit, comfort and style. They are specialists in gorgeous lingerie for larger busted clientsto a J cup. Be perfectly fitted at Lin & Barrett Lingerie.

The Heater Man
The way our homes provide comfort has never been more important. Who would have guessed that a pandemic would make us all think about our home as our haven? Right on our doorstep is The Heater Man, the Rozelle showroom on Victoria Road has the very latest in gas fireplaces and heaters, hydronic systems, hot water systems and gas BBQs. As Sydney’s gas heating specialists, The Heater Man not only sells high-quality gas heating appliances, they also have a team of qualified
plumbers and gas fitters ready to install them for you. Their team aims to make the process of buying a new gas heating appliance a smooth one, combining excellent products with outstanding after sales service. Catering to all seasons, The Heater Man have opened a new alfresco space in their Rozelle showroom. Australians love indoor / outdoor living and alfresco entertaining is part of the national psyche and with that in mind The Heater Man have created a new outdoor space to showcase how you can create an impressive space in your own home. Simon from The Heater Man gives us his tips and advice on the best heating solutions depending upon your space. “Heating design and the ultimate solution start with two key elements. First up, the
space you’ve got to heat and secondly, how you use your space. We then look at things such - have you got kids? What’s your style? Is it part of an overall design feature or is it purely a functional requirement? Are you a homeowner or a renter? And of course, what’s your budget?”, says Simon. Their outdoor range of fireplaces and well-designed outdoor environments can add, not only an additional living space, but considerable value to your home.

That’s certainly true around this neighbourhood. If you peek in to any home on the peninsula, art is proudly featured on the walls and local studios are filled with the young and old learning the powerful skills of art. In Rozelle, Artspark is a sun-filled art and sewing studio with an eco-friendly garden. The garden is home to chickens and guinea pigs and is a perfect place for students to source materials for projects. Another creative space for young and old is East Village Art House where students are asked to leave the busy world at the door, slowdown and have fun. Non creatives will love Pinot and Picasso as you’re guaranteed to take home your very own Picasso. Balmain once held the Australian record for most pubs per capita. Some have disappeared, but we’ve gained a brewery. Founded by mates Tim Fishwick, Tim Condon and Adam TrippeSmith, all industry veterans, plus Head Brewer Dennis De Boer, White Bay Beer Co is located in an old factory in the shadows of White Bay Power Station. “We all live in the area so when we decided to follow our dreams and open a brewery, we wanted to keep it local. This site has room for a large brewhouse and cellar and there’s scope for expansions”, says Fishwick. You can’t walk by a pub or bottle shop in the area without seeing the signature White Bay Beer sign. “The feedback from the community has been great. When we opened, we sold over 100 cases in two hours. And the pubs have been awesome”, says Fishwick.
Dennis De Boer and his partner Jess Walker are bringing the beer vision to life. Union Lager and Sunny Pale is part of their core range alongside an IPA which is part of the permanent line-up but continually changing. The brewery is open for takeaway but in early 2021 the space will open to the public. “We’re just waiting for our licence. We’ve got a great space here and can’t wait to share it with the community” says Fishwick. 26C Mansfield Street, Rozelle Take-away Fri 4-5.30pm and Sat 11am-2pm @whitebaybeer whitebay.beer

Summer hair never looked so good Need a change? Darling talks to local hairdressers about the latest Summer hair trends.
Deborah from Hair Angel TM
Edgy root smudges are still in vogue this summer. They add dimension and texture with minimal upkeep. Blonde tones are soft and beachy with more honey, golden and caramel tones. We still think the bob is a summer staple, but now with longer lengths and shaggy textures. 356 Darling Street, Balmain Victoria from Emma Dean Salon
Want to change your look for summer but can’t make up your mind over whether to go light or dark? ‘Bronde’ is for you. It works for all complexions and hair textures. For those wanting more colour, try romantic rose shades like mauve and pink. 654 Darling Street, Rozelle (enter via National Street) Laura from Laura & Co Hairdressing
My picks for summer is free flowing soft hair with sun kissed chocolate and toffee tones. Short textured bobs and blunt styles have made a comeback. However, the classic beach hair, blonde, bold and beautiful, is a never ending summer trend. 687 Darling Street, Rozelle Ben from Locks Hair
It’s all about fresh summer colour this year, summer lightening or the perfect balayage. Popular this year has been pre-holiday hair appointments, because everyone wants to look fabulous for their getaway! 236 Darling Street, Rozelle

Balmain and Rozelle have always been a haven for hounds, but there’s been a sudden surge in puppies since the pandemic. Silvana Adams, owner of DOGUE Balmain says “We’ve definitely seen an increased demand for our doggie day care and grooming services. There are so many new puppies in the area we can hardly keep up!”. Ranging from rescues to $4,000 designer dogs, there’re no signs demand is slowing. But it’s not only dogs that are in hot demand, cat shelters and breeders have seen a sharp increase in cat enquiries too. 3
