E

very year, as the days grow longer and the temperatures gets hotter, I find myself searching for new things to do during the summer months that don’t involve direct sunlight.

I love the landscape of Pensacola—the lush greenery of East Hill, the shady nook of the tree tunnel, and the clear beaches and whites sands just over the bridge­—but the summer heat can be downright oppressive.

Luckily, the options in (and out) of the city are growing daily and new bars, breweries, art exhibitions, bands and shady summer festivals offer a cool reprise from the humidity and sweat inducing days.

In this issue, we tried to think of the ways we’d most like to spend the summer days. We created the ultimate summer playlist for all your beach lounging and lazing needs, on page 11. We know this playlist is completely subjective and your appreciation for it will directly correlate to your appreciation for 90s R&B. That being said, despite our varying musical tastes, the DTC staff agreed unanimously that OutKast’s SpottieOttieDopaliscious was a playlist must.

We also looked into the best places to cool off for a refreshing dip in a spring, and feature several local coldwater springs within the

region on page 7’s “Take Me to the River,” story (I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to reference the Talking Heads.)

In addition to the playlists, and also a summer podcast roundup (page10) we featured two amazing local festivals— The Fish House Craft Beer Fest and PensacolaPRIDE 2017—that provide plenty of shade and support various aspects of our great and diverse community.

Last but not least, we talked with indie pop band, STRFKR, prior to their show at Vinly Music Hall in July. The band always puts on a fun show and their Pensacola stop should prove no different. Read our interview with frontman Josh Hodges and learn more about hypnosis and existential dread.

Don’t forget to take a look at our Hangout Fest wrap-up on page 17 and see if you can spot yourself in any of our photos. In case you weren’t able to attend, read the short, sweet and hilarious review by our art director Guy Stevens. A word from Curt Morse, Executive Director of the Downtown Improvement Board As we head into the month of June, the subject of parking is still on my mind, as I’ve just returned from the International Parking Institute Conference and Expo in New Orleans.

It’s annual event that draws parking professionals, city and public officials from all across the country, Canada, the United Kingdom and parts of Europe.

There was so much information to process, and there were discussions on everything from parking equipment to parking strategy to parking services.

I also attended a special symposium on the customer service-oriented details of parking, in order to better solve the problems of parking from the customer’s point of view.

Parking has and will continue to have a significant impact on our downtown area, and this conference was an educational experience I’m very grateful for. Throughout the course of this event, I spoke with officials from other cities similar in size to Pensacola, that are having some of the same growing pains as we are when it comes to parking. It was beyond exciting to learn new and different things we could be doing in our downtown that will contribute to the overall experience people will have in the city.

As we head into summer, we’re starting to see several new businesses preparing to open storefronts downtown inside of One Palafox Place— which is really starting to take shape. Those of us who work, live or play downtown are watching the evolution as we pass by the Blount building regularly. The space is taking on a new identity and there are going to be some really amazing boutiques, restaurants and residential spaces inside.

Previously, the building had a very limited utility purpose and as we expand on that purpose, the additional functionality that’s created turns into a win/win for everyone in the city.

The building has opened up many opportunities for more shopping, dining, and entertainment for both residents and visitors of Pensacola.

There might also be another special addition to the Blount Building that will specifically appeal to our out-of-town guests.

As we continue to evolve as a downtown destination, the possibilities continue to really open up for our city and it continues to be an exciting time for us here in Pensacola.

We just celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Palafox Market last month and there was a sensational turnout for the event. The market was packed with vendors, shoppers, live music, arts and crafts, farm products, and a special beer garden created just for the anniversary. As the market continues to grow and we continue to look at it as a local attraction, I would love to make it a more food truck-centric place— we’re not there yet, but we’re growing and evolving in that direction.

No matter the growth or the path this amazing city takes, I want to make sure we hold on to authenticity of our city.

That single word resonates through everything we want to accomplish. We want Pensacola to remain a really cool, genuine town that people look to for entertainment, culture and excitement, while also growing toward becoming a contemporary city. We want to make that authenticity a part of everything we do, and everything we’re growing toward.

Take Me to the River

As the summer temperatures rise, so does our need to be near a refreshing body of cool water. While the Gulf is beautiful, it’s temperatures can reach the mid-80s by August, providing swimmers with more of a warm bath tub feeling rather than one of refreshment. Beat the saltwater blues and the beach traffic by taking a dip in some of our favorite regional freshwater rivers and springs .

Blackwater River State Park 7720 Deaton Bridge Rd, Holt, FL 32564 Blackwater River State Park is located just fifteen miles northeast of Milton, near Harold, off U.S. 90. Find a parking spot and follow a variety of trails to your choice of shoreline. Depending on which trail you go down and which way you turn, you’ll see fairly secluded tree-lined shores—or a packed sandbar a stone’s throw from the forest, complete with rambunctious cookouts, families and tourists. Many visitors to Blackwater River State Park choose to kayak, canoe or tube down the 7 | DOWNTOWNCROWD.COM

river rather than swim, so if a sportier recreational trip appeals to you— bring your gear (and beer) and plot your path down the river. Primitive camping along the river or in pockets of the forest throughout the park is also an option if you’d like to extend your river experience.

Vortex Spring

1517 Vortex Springs Ln, Ponce De Leon, FL 32455 Created by Doc and Ruth Dockery, Vortex Spring is home to the Red & White “Diver Down” Flag and is one of the largest diving facilities in the state of Florida. The spring produces approximately 28 million gallons of crystal “gin” clear water daily and maintains a temperature of 68 degrees year round. It’s cold at first, but the best way to get your body acclimated is to dive right in. The property also features dozens of pavilions and picnic tables throughout their 420-acre grassy playground surrounding the water.

Take a certified diving class, snorkel, explore the nearby nature trails, or just take a dip in the clear and cool waters.

Vortex Spring also offers campsites and cabins for rent throughout the season if you’re looking to turn your day trip into a weekend getaway. Here’s a

tip: this place is typically packed in the summer so if you’re looking for privacy or quietness, opt for another nearby spring on the list.

Ponce De Leon Springs

2860 Ponce De Leon Springs Rd, Ponce De Leon, FL 32455 Ponce de Leon Springs is part of a Florida State Park in Holmes County, Florida. It is located in the town of Ponce de Leon, a half mile south of U.S. 90. This beautiful aquamarinecolored spring is named for Juan Ponce de León, who led the first Spanish expedition to Florida in 1513. Legend has it that he was in search of the “fountain of youth.”

Perhaps the secret to immortality lies in the clear waters of Ponce de Leon Springs where the water temperature remains a temperature of 68 degrees year-round. The main spring is a convergence of two underground water flows, and produces 14 million gallons of water daily. Visitors can take a leisurely walk along two selfguided nature trails through a lush, hardwood forest and learn about the local ecology and wildlife. People often host picnics or cookouts in the grass or at one of the many grills and pavilions.

Wakulla Springs

465 Wakulla Park Dr, Wakulla Springs, FL 32327 Located just 15 minutes south of Tallahassee is Wakulla Springs State Park—the deepest freshwater spring in the world. The spring provides cool and crisp water for a summer dip, and the perfect swimming platform for cannonballs. The spring is surrounded by lush greenery and has provided the perfect backdrop for several Hollywood classics, including “Creature From the Black Lagoon.” If you prefer to sit atop the water rather than in it, opt for the river cruise and enjoy the sights and sounds from the comfort of a boat. If you’d like to extend your visit to this picturesque spring, book a night at the Lodge at Wakulla Springs. Built in 1937 by industrialist Edward Ball, the Lodge is one of the most beautiful buildings of its period. It’s located in the middle of Wakulla Springs State Park, and offers 27 rooms overlooking the lush spring.

The lodge boasts a fine dining hall, as well as the world’s longest marble soda fountain. Nature, luxury, history, and comfort can all be found at the Lodge at Wakulla Springs.

craft beer fest

Raise your glasses and celebrate the timehonored tradition of brewing at the 5th Annual Fish House Craft Beer Fest, held at the Fish House Deck on June 17.

Held as a way to get a taste of different beers throughout the Gulf Coast region, the event will have over 50 varieties to taste.

“We feature local home brewers, local and regional breweries, and breweries that aren’t even open yet but want to get the word out,” said Maria Goldberg, the director of marketing for Great

Southern Restaurants.

Admission gets you a free glass for unlimited tasting of both the beers and spirits on offer. You can also get a pretzel necklace to snack on between sips, or just relax and listen to the live bands.

This indulgence is not all for fun either, as proceeds go to a good cause as well. Great Southern Restaurants has partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters for the event. They will have a station during the festival to answer questions and provide sign-ups for those who wish to volunteer.

“There is a shortage of big

brothers specifically, so we hope we can get a few sign-ups,” said Goldberg.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun either way, and it’s going to a good cause.”

The 5th Annual Fish House Craft Beer Fest occurs on June 17 from 3 to 6 pm. It is a 21+ event, and admission is $20 before June 1 and $30 afterwards. On June 17, Pensacola’s LGBTQ community will come together to kick off the sixth annual PensacolaPRIDE festival in downtown Seville Square.

The event is hosted by GayGrassroots of Northwest Florida and will offer a variety of family friendly elements: local food vendors,

arts and crafts booths, cold beer, specialty drinks, informational booths, and musical acts throughout the day.

The mission of GayGrassroots of NW Florida is to bring together nonpartisan activists to advocate for full understanding, respect, equality and inclusion of gay, lesbian, bisexual,

transgender and questioning persons living in northwestern Florida. Aside from a beautiful, fun day in the park, GGNWF also uses the PRIDE Fest as a vehicle to offer LGBTQ advocacy training workshops, national activists lectures, and the opportunity for the community to come together to learn more about civil rights and community involvement.

GGNWF representative, Louis Cooper, noted that many cities celebrate gay pride all during the summer, specifically in June, as a commemoration of the Stonewall riots in 1969 in New York City.

“That was the first time that the LGBT community had resisted,” Copper said. “Stonewall was a gay bar in Greenwich Village and was raided by the cops, and the people inside fought back, and rioted in the streets. It was kind of recognized as the start of the modern day gay rights movement.

A year after that the first gay rights celebration was held in New York.”

The theme for 2017’s PRIDE Fest is “Reignite the Fire,” which Cooper says is a reminder to the LGBTQ community to keep fighting for equality.

“We chose “Reignite the Fire” as the theme to remind the LGBT community not to rest on our recent accomplishments, most notably, the 2015 Supreme Court decision that legalized same sex marriage,” Cooper said. “We need to look no further than the mean-spirited so-called “bathroom bills” that seek to keep transgender Americans out of restrooms and locker rooms to see that there is much work to be done. We hope the LGBT community, and our allies, will use PensacolaPRIDE 2017 as an impetus to reignite the fires of compassion, equality and love in our hearts and minds.”

Podcasts are becoming more and more popular, and lazy summer days are the best way to catch up on them. These modern-day radio shows range from the funny to the chilling to the thought provoking, and we’ve listed some of our favorites to muse on whether you’re at home, on the beach or on the road. by hana frenette & tanner yea

My Brother, My Brother, and Me Billed as ‘An Advice Show for the Modern Era’, MBMBaM has been running weekly for more than seven years and still going strong. Hosted by brothers Justin, Travis and Griffin McElroy, the three take questions from the audience and the Yahoo Answers service while offering less-than-useful advice in a hilarious fashion. As the show goes on, their bits become more elaborate and their vernacular starts to worm into your soul, until eventually you are calling everything a ‘good good goofboy’ or warning of the dangers of ‘glass sharks.’

Their chemistry is electric and natural, and they’ve even landed themselves a TV show on the Seeso Network. If you burn through all 350+ episodes, there are further shows in the ‘McElroy Family of Products’: The Adventure Zone, Rose Buddies, Cool Games Inc., Things I Bought at Sheetz, Carrey On, and many more.

Highly recommended if you like irreverent humor, pop culture references, and some legitimate moments of tenderness.

The H.P. Lovecraft Literary Podcast On a slightly darker note, take a delve into the dark and mysterious life and work of weird fiction writer H.P. Lovecraft in 10 | DOWNTOWNCROWD.COM

this literary analysis podcast. Hosted by filmmakers Chad Fifer and Chris Lackey, this podcast goes over every story that Lovecraft wrote during his lifetime – from the famous likes of The Call of Cthulhu and At The Mountains of Madness, to lesser stories such as The Horror in the Museum and Polaris. Lovecraft scholars, artists and authors all make guest appearances to discuss with Lackey and Fifer both the story and the life of Lovecraft. The podcast also features full readings of some of the stories. Since the start of the podcast, they’ve gone through every Lovecraft story and now muse on other weird fiction stories – this new content also has a subscription cost. Lovecraft’s work, covering roughly the first 120 episodes, is free to listen to and a must for anyone who has ever wondered what secrets the Necronomicon contains.

STEM-Talk Have you ever wanted to find out what is on the bleeding edge of technology, science and engineering, but were afraid to wade through overly technical transcripts and reports? The STEM-Talk podcast may be for you. The Florida Institute of Human and Machine Cognition, a nonprofit research lab here in Pensacola, produces STEM-Talk. Every episode, Dawn Kernagis and a number of rotating cohosts – including Tom Jones, Ken Ford and Dominic D’Agostino – speak with experts on medicine, engineering, science, nutrition, aeronautics and more. While they talk about scientific breakthroughs, the guests also speak of their lives, passions and everything else that is involved in their

career. With two shows every month and a wide range of topics, there is always something new and interesting to learn about these local experts.

This American Life The godfather of podcasts— the Ol’ Faithful of FM storytelling. This free, weekly radio program, hosted by awardwinning journalist Ira Glass, focuses each show around three separate stories, surrounding a central theme. The mood of each shows varies widely—it’s sometimes humorous, unbelievable, scary, ironic, or bewildering— but always features first person narratives from the story’s subjects, along with excellent narration from Glass.

The production quality, subject matter and storytelling abilities are inspiring and give listeners a glimpse into these seemingly normal, but incredible and intertwining American lives.

You Must Remember This The perfect show to listen to as you lounge along the shoreline. This series explores the secrets and forgotten history of Hollywood over the decades.

Host and former film critic for LA Weekly, Karina Longworth, provides extensive research while working each episode into a wildly interesting look back at what really happened behind

the scenes and what Hollywood rumors really have any truth in them. Charles Manson, Marilyn Monroe, Lana Turner, Charlie Chaplin— any star that sparked speculation or intrigue is investigated

by Longworth— and her findings are fascinating.

S-Town- A story so bizarre and entertaining, you’ll be hooked after the first few plot details and lines of wildly colorful southern dialect.

Missing Richard SimmonsThis series takes a deeper look into the public disappearance of the energetic, curly-hair exercise guru America loved in the 90s. What starts out as a pop culture discussion ends in a perplexing quandary about public figures and the privacy they crave.

Serial- Believe the hype. Even if you don’t think you’re a fan of true crime, you’ll be obsessing about the location of Adnan Syed’s supposed phone booth and AT&T phone lines before the series is over.

Whether you’re itching to get out of town for the weekend or just looking to see something weird, our list of Florida roadside attractions has you covered. From the local sands of Pensacola Beach to the balmy shores of Kissimmee, we compiled a list of our favorite interesting and inexpensive interstate stops through the sunshine state.

1. Pensacola Beach Futuro House 1304 Panferio Dr., Pensacola Beach, Fla. If you have friends or family visiting from out of town, or you’re just feeling spacey, drive by this rounded gem and reminisce on a time when people were dying to experience futuristic, other-worldly living on a daily basis. This Futuro House, commonly referred to as the “UFO House,” has withstood many hurricanes since it was built in the 1960s. The experimental design was quickly hyped as the “home of the future,” but less than 100 were ever built. The small rectangular bottom structure supports a rounded, spaceship-shaped bedroom, lined with oval windows that channel memories of sci-fi movies and stories of unidentified flying objects. Around 60 of the flying saucer homes still remain scattered across the globe.

2. Ray Charles’s Boyhood Home 443 SW Ray Charles Ave., Greenville, Fla. It’s no question that Ray Charles was a prodigy who swept the music world and made us rethink what it meant to be a musician. But did you know that you could still see the house that Ray grew up in, right here in Florida? Located in Greenville, Fl – off of I-10 and an hour or two outside Tallahassee – this simple house was the home of Ray Charles and his mother until he was around 7 years old. At that age, his mother sent him to study at the School for Deaf and Blind in St. Augustine, but he would come back and visit her up until her death, when Ray was 15. The house began to fall under disrepair but in 2006, then-

mayor Elesta Pritchett – who was also a childhood friend of Ray’s – asked the state for money to repair the house. Since then, it became an official state landmark as of 2009. If you’re interested in seeing Ray Charles’s humble roots before he launched into super stardom, take a stop through Greenville on your trip.

3. The Fountain of Youth St. Augustine, Fla. This 15-acre archaeological park was created more than 100 years ago as a tribute to Spanish explorer Ponce De Leon’s supposed quest for eternal youth.

While the famous Spaniard never actually mentioned his quest for youth in his writings, many close to him spoke of his searchings for a “fountain of youth” and cited this quest as his motivation behind his first expedition to Florida. In 1904, Luella Day McConnell built the park around citrus orchards and an old well, drawing hopeful skeptics from around the world to sample the water from within. Several artifacts from Ponce De Leon and Native American tribes have been found in the soil on the property. Perhaps Leon found the secret to living forever, or maybe it’s just a pretty watering hole with a plaque.

4. Busy Bee #25 6458 US-129, Live Oak, Fla. When taking a long road trip across the panhandle of Florida, it is inevitable you’ll have to make a pit stop at a gas station for some fuel, refreshments and bathroom time. The greatest gas station in the state, strangely enough, is in Live Oak, Fl. Located off of US Highway 129, Busy Bee store number 25 is a Mecca to the trucker. High, brightly lit ceilings; a Dunkin’ Donuts and a Burger King; a sprawling selection of gifts, snacks, drinks and distractions and enormous bathrooms with shower stalls make this a must see for road trippers, truckers and even locals. Though these stations are up-and-down North and Central Florida, #25 is the most sprawling

and impressive to see.

Gorgeous and exotic flowers fill the grounds surrounding the 2015-foot neoGothic Bok Tower- which is essentially a large singing bell tower that features a 60-bell carillon that is played every day at 1 and 3 pm. The property sits on Iron Mountain, one of the highest points in Florida, and the tower sits atop a 295-foot hill within the garden grounds. A beautiful brass door depicting the Book of Genesis welcomes guests to the tower, nestled among lush greenery and a pond. The beautiful door, iron gates and sprawling grounds were all created by famous designers and landscape architects who’ve worked on the Washington National Cathedral in D.C. and New York City’s Central Park.

6. Solomon’s Castle 4533 Solomon Rd., Ona, Fla. Pull off the interstate and approach a swamp, only to see a bright and silvery medieval castle shining among the pine trees—it even has a moat. The castle was constructed in the mid-70s out of aluminum printing plates that were thrown away by local newspapers. Sculptor Howard Solomon created the three-story masterpiece, adding a courtyard filled with sculptures from old car parts. If you’ve always fancied yourself as royalty, take a drive by the one of a kind structure—it’s currently for sale and could be yours for the small asking price of $2.5 million.

The Shell Factory 2787 N. Tamiami Trl, Fort Meyers, Fla. This is what roadside dreams are made of. Lots of tacky trinkets to buy, cheap prices, a bathroom, and the world’s largest collection of taxidermy. This little shop has been positioned off the interstate near Ft. Meyers for more than 80 years, luring drivers in with their bumper boat lake, park, botanical gardens, zipline and a couple of restaurants. The real claim to fame though are the shells. The Shell Factory is the largest seashell retailer in the world and have just about every shell you’d ever want- probably 50 varieties of them. In line behind the shells is their collection of taxidermied animals—193 different species worth more than $7 million.

Q + A with front man Josh Hodges on existentiaism, their recent impulsive album release, and the words of Allan Watts

DTC: I feel like I hear a lot about Catholic guilt these days and in review I read recently of your last album, the interviewer was convinced you reference that guiltit on the new album. Is it a real thing for you, and if it is it, when did you first notice it in your life?

JH: It’s definitely a real thing, I think what I have is more inherited by from my parents upbringing of me—specifically my mom, and then I was probably directly absorbing it through school over time. I remember in seventh grade, we had a guest priest speak to our class. They separated the boys and girls and they told us that masturbation would send us to hell. That didn’t mess with us that much really, but our parents and my mom totally did- she was super shamed-based in her tactics. She found some old playboys that I’d found in a dumpster or something, and I’d hidden them in a mattressso much shame. I tried to get out from under that kind of stuff, but a lot of it is our culture. Even if you’re not raised in a religions house, our society has a very puritanical set of values. We have all these weird, messed up values, and sometimes we don’t question where our values even came from. We’re taught to be ashamed of sex as kids but then to be proud of it later on- lots of mixed messages. I really like Dan Savage- his podcast and his articles are syndicated in local Portland papers, and it’s one of my favorite things to read. People will write in about stuff that I have no interest in, but I still really love to read what the solutions to those problems are. Those articles really helped me to feel more comfortable about being who I am, and liking what I like.

DTC: I read that you had a friend hypnotize you in order to ease 15 | DOWNTOWNCROWD.COM

your social anxiety. Did it affect you at all? Any fear they might do something completely different to you while you were hypnotized instead of what they’d planned?

JH: Thankfully the person who did it, I trust with my life- so I had no concerns. It really did help. The thing with hypnosis is that you remember everything, and you kind of have to choose to let it workyou have to let yourself be in that state. I feel like it’s a fast track to rewiring the brain; I think advertisers use it a lot. It’s not really magic, just affirmations. It’s almost like doing meditation but using someone else to help. It’s really powerful and I used it to quit smoking. I had started to smoke again after quitting for a while, I tried it out, and I just woke up and didn’t want to smoke at all. I was at a party a few weeks after being hypnotized, and would have normally been super anxious—I didn’t smoke or drink at all at the time, and it was really weird to not be anxious. I was really intrigued by hypnosis for a while, and I downloaded all these videos and podcasts that were just about aligning your behaviors with your actual wants—like mental gymnastics. It’s funny because in your life, you actually take a lot of care with yourself— you look before crossing the street, you wear a seatbelt— but with smoking you’re just so careless.

DTC: You’ve mentioned in several interviews and articles that the band and the music isn’t about fame and success, just about having fun while you can because we’ll all die eventually. First- how do you keep the existential dread at bay, and second, do you think the band would be different if success was very important to you?

JH: I do think about that stuff a lot– about how we’ll all be dead

by hana frenette eventually and everyone who is alive now and knows anything about anyone alive, will one day be gone. Death is like manure in a way, it’s either really crappy or it helps you grow.

We still have to go home and eat and get our sleep even though we will all be dead and none of this will matter. Doing mediation helps me buffer the awareness of the fact that all this is temporary, and it helps me chose to be more intentional in my actions. Instead of just contemplating the meaning of things and stressing out, it helps me be more aware and present so I can enjoy the walk I’m on or the meal I’m eating or the dog I’m petting. I definitely think that was more our philosophy about the band when it first started. I was close to giving up on being a musician— I was playing music and it wasn’t going well, and I thought well, if we’re going to do something unsuccessful, I’d rather at least be doing what I want and enjoying, rather than just plugging away with the goal of being successful one day. Now, the band really has just become our job. I totally love our crew and the people in the band all get along which is really rare and cool. It is exhausting to tour, to be away from friends and family. It’s not always fun.

Originally my thought was that it just had to be fun- that was very true in the beginning of the bandnow it doesn’t really matter how we feel. We enjoy it enough, but how much can you really enjoy the songs you’ve played a thousand times? I love going to shows to see bands I like, and I want to see a good set. We try to make a set that’s conducive to that environ-

Photo by Cara Robbins ment. We put a lot of work into the set list, and the lighting, and every little thing we can to make it a fun environment.

DTC: You feature samples from several Alan Watts lectures in your music. Where did that influence come from and what about his work appeals to you?

JH: The whole death thing—he really has a good understanding of eastern philosophy. He talks about it all with a very non-complicated, non- religious feeling, and he has a really colorful voice. He’s so good, even if you don’t care about what he’s saying, his voice is so engaging. What he talks about is really great; it’s like this Easter egg hunt in this realm of thinking. I was really depressed and started practicing mediation and it saved my life.

I like putting that stuff into songs because someone may have no interest in philosophy whatsoever, and then hear this great voice and these words and actually find it interesting to listen to.

DTC: The band’s album out last November, titled Being No One, Going Nowhere, was still full of dancey vibes and plenty of synth.

Then Vault Vol. 1 was released this year and the two releases sound almost nothing alike. Tell me a little about Vault Vol 1.

JH: It was a totally impulsive release. It’s just songs I’ve been writing since before STRFCKR existedmostly short songs, and little bits of unfinished things. A lot of these songs were things we’d tried to

make sound polished at one time or another. We had over 80 demos, and I just realized we were never going to finish them all, or perfect them. Sean, our bass player, said I should release them all and just put them out as a vault- kind of like a box set- that way they could come out whenever we wanted.

I feel like it’s not like the albums were meant to have a proper release. They’re maybe something that fans who are curious about what our songwriting is like—kind of a peek inside the process. A lot of people wont like that unfinished or unpolished vibe, but we thought it was good enough as it is. It definitely was not made with a bunch of intention. We’ll have two more volumes that will probably come out this year as part of the vault series.

DTC: Every time I read an interview with you, you always reference a book you’ve been reading and the subject matter always seems to differ. What are you reading now?

JH: I just started reading “The Razor’s Edge.” I’d heard from people that they really liked it but had never read it myself. I’m also reading this other kind of more practical, meditation book.

Albums: What we’re listening to this month Dreamcar Dreamcar.

STRFKR Vault vol. 1

by tanner yea – As the aesthetics and style of the 80s continues to re-emerge in popular culture, it’s no surprise we are seeing a big resurgence in synth, chorus pedals and brass instruments in music.

But only now are we really starting to hit retro strides, and DREAMCAR hits that crest hard on their self-titled release.

Headed by Davey Havok (of AFI) and backed by Tony Kanal, Tom Dumont and Adrian Young (all of No Doubt), DREAMCAR is less a trip down memory lane and more a street race down memory highway in a neon blue Testarossa. This is by far the best goth wave band to have put out an album since the likes of The Smiths or The Cure. Havok’s voice perfectly suits the aesthetic of 80s somber bands like Bauhaus, The Sisters of Mercy and Joy Division, while the rest of the band’s multi-instrumentalism provides complex layers, sprawling synths, postpunk drums and near-funk bass lines.

The sounds covers a large array of new wave styles – while Kill for Candy has a heavy dance feel, Slip on the Moon is a bit darker and atmospheric, showing that the band isn’t a one-trick pony stylis-

by Hana Frenette – I’ve listened to STRFKR tracks in the past, but none have resonated with me the way the songs on Vault. Vol. 1 do. I know many people look to STRFKR for their dance party-esque, syth-infused, indie pop songs, and will probably be confused when they come to this album for a listen. Vault Vol. 1 is the first release in a series of three, consisting of older, unfinished and unpolished tracks from lead singer and founder of the group, Josh Hodges.

The previously unreleased recordings were salvaged from Hodges’ computer, some pre-dating the band’s first album by a couple of years. Considered a more intimate peek into Hodges’ creative process, most of the 20 tracks are one- or two-minute songs, or even snippets of songs, that will be of interest only to dedicated fans of the band who can recognize the early stages of a song they know and love. Most consist of guitar and keyboard demos, along with a few that are more fleshed out, like the 100-second Boogie Woogie. Some of the clips are not only catchy, but beautiful, and encourage the listener to draw comparisons to The

tically. What other bands like Paramore or The 1975 have tried to do, DREAMCAR accomplishes. The sound is tight, interesting and new while still championing the era of hairspray and eyeliner.

ALL EYEZ ON ME

What sounds like a sequel to the 2011 film Drive is actually a whole different beast. Written and directed by Edgar Wright of Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World, Baby Driver is a much more straight forward action movie than the brooding neon-noir of Drive. The cast list is also star-studded, featuring Ansel Elgort, Lily James, Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, and even Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Edgar Wright has a good hand in making action movies that are genuinely funny and thrilling to watch, so I have high expectations for the film. The cinematography looks great, the action looks pulse pounding, and for a movie that has a big musical theme, I’m sure the soundtrack will be standout as well. I’m going to believe the hype for it.

It may seem passé, but I welcome with open arms another hip-hop biopic. After 2009’s Notorious and 2015’s Straight Outta Compton, All Eyez On Me focuses on another juggernaut of the industry – Tupac Shakur. It’s almost scary how much Demetrius Shipp Jr. looks like ‘Pac, and the attention to detail is so high that the actors are even wearing the rapper’s trademark outfits. Jamal Woolard returns from Notorious to once again play The Notorious B.I.G, so I guess this is a sequel/adjacent film of some sort. The 90s hip-hop world had some Shakespearean level tragedies, and it will be interesting to see just what Tupac had to go through in his life to end up on top – before losing it all. I’m pretty hopeful for this one, and who knows - maybe we’ll get that A Tribe Called Quest biopic soon.

by Carly stone – Fans of 90s Riot Grrrl rejoice! Cherry Glazerr wowed us with Haxel Princess in 2014 by conjuring up forgotten memories of the Raincoats, Julie Ruin and the Runaways among others. Their second studio album introduced to us to then 15-year old guitarist Clementine Creevy wailing I know that you notice my ways in the gritty/ hopeful Had 10 Dollaz, thereby solidifying it as the teenage angst anthem of the year.

Three years later, although Creevy has not abandoned the raw, youthful qualities that made Haxel Princess so uniquely passionate, it’s obvious that she has embraced her older, wiser self with the release of Apocalipstick.

The rock trio, also consisting of keyboardist/guitarist Sasami Ashworth and drummer Tabor Allen, are as powerful as they are versatile and Apocalipstick shines bright with standout track after standout track. Songs like Told You I’d Be With the Guys feature Creevy’s signature pleading vocals and jagged guitar style, but with a new, more polished approach.

While some younger bands might compromise their artistic vision for the

by HALEY WEAVER – Harry Styles’ selftitled debut album surprised me. Let me clear that up, though: he’s not surprisingly talented, he’s talented, and that’s important to understand off the bat. But the album, a real tribute to what rock was rather than is, impressed me more than I expected it to (and I expected it to.) The first notable trait about Harry Styles is that this guy has pipes. Styles’ wide vocal range and raspy tone makes this music perfect for him; his vocals throughout are quite shiny. Woman, with an Elton-esque piano cut throughout, is groovy and sultry, easily one of the catchiest songs the album has to offer and a showcase of Styles’ vocal ability.

The album’s closer, From the Dining Table, is reminiscent of early Elliot Smith, and shows Styles at his most vulnerable, with a stripped down look at loneliness. He lyrically contrasts the same past relationship in both the dreamy, drug-induced Meet Me in the Hallway and the shamelessly-cowbell-featuring rocker, Only Angel. The alt-country song Two Ghosts is one of the more lyrically impressive songs on the album, mixing

masses on their way up, Cherry Glazerr seem to know just who they are and remain as unapologetic as ever as their lyrics would suggest in Trash People. “We can’t live a nine-to-five / art is love and love is sloppy / nothing is all pure / nothing is all dirty.”

All that said, the album appears less a collection of Easter eggs, more so influences bleeding into each other— appreciated, but not stolen. Only time will tell who he is outside the rock references; until then, this record is worth recognition by any self-proclaimed lover of music and is enjoyable as hell. Regardless, Harry Styles, the album, proves that Harry Styles, the solo artist, is here to stay..

I had to watch this trailer multiple times because on the first viewing, I laughed the whole way through; not because it’s funny in the slightest but because I genuinely don’t know what audience asked for another one of these movies. It has the same formulaic plot as the previous FOUR Transformers movies: things are not good; there’s a battle between the good robots and the bad robots; to learn more about these space robots that keep coming to just America, they have to travel to some other country—there’s even the token hot girl sidekick whose only apparent skills are being hot and screaming.

An action film is an action film, right? I guess it makes sense to cash in on an already existing franchise, rather than risk starting afresh and bombing harder. That being said—don’t waste your money.

I’m not sure what to make of this movie yet, other than it follows a trend of films about the “Child Genius.” The deviation is interesting, though: this Child Genius, Henry, helps solve a mystery. Except he’s 11, so actually he helps his co-dependent single mother, Naomi Watts, solve a mystery. The way the trailer is pieced together makes it all look a bit messy, but there’s still promise to this storyline about saving the abused girl next door— especially when the abuser is played by That Scary Guy Dean Norris (Breaking Bad.) Even with the loose ends, this film looks smarter than most of its box-office peers, with the opportunity to give the audience some excitement as well as endearing mother-son moments, and for that reason it may do quite well. If nothing else, at least it’s not a sequel no one asked for.

June 24 Dodgebrawl is a fun, doubleelimination dodge ball tournament on the arena floor of Pensacola Bay Center. Teams consist of 6-10 adults, ages 18-65, playing for annual bragging rights and winning money for a local charity of their choice. Teams will also have the chance to win prize money

June 10 Come out to support your Pensacola Roller Girls in their second home game of the season. This game will be held at Skateland of Milton, in Milton FL. Blue Wahoo’s Home Run Derby and Fan Fest June 19 Come and join Pensacola’s Blue Wahoos for a big thankyou to the fans for their Home Run Derby and Fan Fest. Watch as your favorite players step up to bat to drill some balls into the stands to see who can hit the most.
