FIRST CITY ART CENTER’S 20TH ANNUAL PUMPKIN PATCH

S
pooky season is creeping in, and Pensacolians are already getting into the Halloween spirit. Celebrants are planning costumes, piling up candy and decking their homes out with delightfully frightful decor. And, of course, no Halloween display is complete without a pumpkin — or even a whole patch! This year, the First City Art Center (FCAC) is hosting its 20th Annual Glass and Ceramic Pumpkin Patch, bringing together colorful, one-of-a-kind creations by local artists. What began as a small gathering of artists at FCAC’s original location has grown into a much-anticipated community event and fundraiser. FCAC and its artists have gone from selling 300 pumpkins after their very first patch to selling an impressive 5,600 pumpkins last year. Just as the selection of artists and their pumpkins has grown over the years, so has FCAC. This annual event has significantly contributed to the development of their arts education programs, as well as spreading awareness of the importance of art and encouraging local artists to grow their exposure and abilities.
“The 20th Anniversary Pumpkin Patch is a beloved part of the fabric of our community,” FCAC Executive Director Bart Hudson said. “It represents a community that is committed to the arts and enjoys the creativity of their neighbors. Certainly, it is about the pumpkins, but it is also about the greater Pensacola area coming together for a stunning experience of artistry.” FCAC’s Glass and Ceramic Pumpkin Patch returns Oct. 9–10 with a new assortment of glass-blown and sculpted pumpkins. The event kicks off with a preview party on Oct. 9 from 5 to 8 pm, featuring music and live art demonstrations. Preview party guests get an early look at the patch and can purchase up to two pumpkins per guest. On Oct. 10, the patch opens to the public from 10 am to 2 pm for a free general admission sale, with no limit on the number of pumpkins guests can purchase. Local ceramic artists and glassblowers from the FCAC community pour their talent and creativity into crafting 6,000 expressive pumpkins for the event each year. They handcraft a colorful collection of glass and ceramic gourds in all colors, shapes, sizes and patterns. “Each artist works at their own pace,” Hudson said. “What is often

lost in the narrative of the creation is the time spent by the artist in learning and perfecting their craft. They spend years on rotten pumpkins before achieving the Great Pumpkin.” Each pumpkin has a different vibe, providing a unique flare to your Halloween decor and boasting a longer lifespan than a normal pumpkin. Whether you buy a gourd you adore or just admire the patch, you will be supporting local artists by checking out this event. “Our artists are amazing,” Hudson said. “With varying degrees of experience, they each bring an absolutely unique approach to their art. The artists come from all backgrounds — students, IT folks, physicians, teachers, lawyers, members of the military and the list goes on. We also have a couple of artists that are making their livelihood with their art. They work on their pumpkins all year to be ready for the harvest.” Other activities will also run alongside the pumpkin sale. FCAC’s award-winning children’s programming is available to provide fun activities for kids during the event. Glassblowers and ceramicists will demonstrate their craft live during the event, giving the community a glimpse into the hard work and precision that goes into their

creations. Food trucks are also on-site to provide patch-goers a reprieve from pumpkin-picking. The pumpkin patch is FCAC’s largest annual fundraiser and outreach event, benefitting both the center and the artists who create the pumpkins. Artists receive 70% of the proceeds while the remaining 30% goes directly to FCAC to support arts education classes, community outreach programs and scholarships for students in need. Attending this event is a great way to give back to FCAC and its artists, while also supporting arts education in our community. Pumpkin prices begin at $20 during both the preview party and the general admissions sale. Preview party tickets are $45 for FCAC members and $50 for non-members, while children receive free admission. The preview party ticket price does not include the two pumpkins each partygoer is allotted to purchase. Guests can also purchase two additional pumpkins by making a $15 donation to FCAC at checkout. In addition to music and live art demonstrations, guests will also enjoy complementary beer and wine from Pensacola Bay Brewery, available for those 21 years and older, alongside other refreshments for partygoers of all ages.
FCAC is also looking for patchgoers old and new to share their FCAC pumpkin patch stories and favorite pumpkins to connect with the community. Stories and photos showing how you began collecting pumpkins, what your favorite pumpkin from the patch is or whether you prefer glass or ceramics are just a few examples of stories that FCAC is interested in seeing. After 20 years, simple math tells us that there are tens of thousands FCAC pumpkins in our homes. What a wonderful statement to our artists and all those that love First City Art Center.” The 20th Annual Glass and Ceramic Pumpkin Patch will be held at First City Art Center, located at 1060 N. Guillemard St. in downtown Pensacola. Parking is available across the surrounding neighborhood. UNITED WAY OF WEST FLORIDA CELEBRATES COMMUNITY IMPACT AND HONORS LOCAL LEADERS United Way of West Florida recently recognized local leaders, businesses and community organizations for their outstanding service, partnership, and commitment to strengthening communities across Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. In addition to serving on UWWF’s Board of Directors, Douma has helped shape the organization’s work through the Community Investment Committee, supported the Glitz & Gallop Galas and championed numerous community initiatives. Distinguished Community Service Award: John Scanlon John Scanlon, Assistant Director of Sanitation Services for the City of Pensacola, received the Distinguished Community Service Award, the highest honor bestowed by UWWF’s Board of Directors. A longtime advocate for UWWF, Scanlon serves on the Board of Directors and chairs the Development Advisory Council. Through his leadership and connections across the community, he has helped create new opportunities for UWWF to connect with organizations and individuals working to address local needs. Recognizing Corporate Giving Corporate giving is an important part of UWWF’s ability to invest in programs and services throughout Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. Publix was recognized as UWWF’s top corporate donor for the 2025-2026 year, reflecting the commitment of its employees and the company to investing in the community. Florida Power & Light (FPL) was recognized as the organization’s second-highest corporate donor. FPL has also been a longstanding community partner, supporting UWWF initiatives and volunteer efforts throughout the region. The City of Pensacola was recognized as UWWF’s third-highest corporate donor, demonstrating the city’s continued support of efforts to address local needs. Navy Federal Credit Union was recognized as UWWF’s fourth-highest corporate donor for 2025-2026. HCA Florida West Hospital was recognized as UWWF’s fifth-highest corporate donor and continues to support efforts focused on improving the health and well-being of local residents. Partner Awards UWWF also presented three annual partner awards to organizations for their exceptional collaboration and contributions to the community.
Large Business Partner of the Year: Florida Blue Florida Blue received the Large Business Partner of the Year Award in recognition of its longstanding partnership with UWWF. Florida Blue has provided space and support for UWWF’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program and other community initiatives. Small Business Partner of the Year: The Makery The Makery received the Small Business Partner of the Year Award for its continued support of UWWF through community engagement and fundraising. Owned by Cody and Meredith Sowell, The Makery has supported UWWF initiatives including Women United, hosting a cakedecorating event and donating supplies and proceeds to support UWWF’s work. Partner Agency of the Year: Pensacola Habitat for Humanity Pensacola Habitat for Humanity received the Partner Agency of the Year Award for its continued collaboration with UWWF. The organization has participated in Day of Caring, engaged with the EscaRosa Financial Stability Coalition and worked to help local families achieve safe, affordable housing. UWWF also recognized its media partners, including Cat Country 98.7, NewsRadio 92.3, WEAR Cares and Pensacola News Journal/ LocaliQ, for helping share information about local needs, resources and opportunities to get involved. A Year of Community Impact The recognition came as UWWF reflected on a year of work made possible through community support and collaboration. During the 2025-2026 program year, UWWF Community Investment-funded programs served 27,944 individuals, with 71.5% of those reporting an intended outcome achieving it. Among individuals whose financial status was reported, 61.4% were ALICE households—Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed—and 38.6% were living below the federal poverty level. According to the most recent ALICE report, 47% of households in Escambia County and 36% of households in Santa Rosa County are at or below the ALICE Threshold, meaning they are either living in poverty or earning above the federal poverty level but still unable to afford the basics. UWWF’s 211 Northwest Florida answered 14,565 calls during the 2025-2026 program year, connecting residents with resources for housing, utilities, food and other essential needs and impacting more than 28,000 people. The Florida Veterans Support Line received 2,821 calls and provided assistance to more than 3,000 individuals, while 988 connected more than 3,256 callers with trained crisis counselors and mental health resources. UWWF’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program filed 1,181 tax returns, bringing approximately $1.47 million in refunds back into the community and generating an estimated $2.2 million in economic impact. Community members also contributed their time and resources. During Day of Caring 2025, 713 volunteers contributed an estimated $98,000 in community impact, while the 2025 Stuff the Bus campaign collected more than $78,000 worth of school supplies for students across Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. “When we unite, we can do more than respond to today’s challenges,” Gilliam said. “We can create abundance, build brighter futures and help our communities thrive.” About United Way of West Florida United Way of West Florida (UWWF) mobilizes communities to action so all can thrive in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. BAPTIST HEALTH CARE HOSPITALS EARN U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT RECOGNITION Baptist and Gulf Breeze hospitals have been recognized by U.S. News & World Report in its 2026-2027 Best Hospitals ratings for excellence in patient care. The Baptist Health Care hospitals earned 11 total High Performing awards. The honors recognize excellence in procedures and conditions within multiple areas of care, including heart and vascular, orthopedics, neurosurgery and urology. "It's always an honor to be recognized, but awards like this are really about our people," said Mark Faulkner, president and CEO of Baptist Health Care. "From our clinical to support team members, everyone plays a part in delivering patient care. DUNWOODY PARK PLAYGROUND REPLACEMENT REVEALED The City of Pensacola Parks and Recreation Department has finalized the design for the replacement playground at Dunwoody Park, with installation scheduled for winter 2026. On July 3, 2026, Pensacola Parks and Recreation, in collaboration with District 4 City Councilman Jared Moore, hosted a public input session ahead of the annual Fourth of July Kids Bike Parade, organized by the Cordova Park Neighborhood Association. Residents were presented with two playground design options featuring ADA-accessible elements and were invited to provide feedback through a survey. Community input helped guide the selection of the final playground design, ensuring the new
play space reflects the needs and interests of the Dunwoody Park neighborhood. About The Design The old western-themed playground will feature wood-tone panels, colorful slides, ramps, and metal components. The main play structure features two deputies guarding the General Store at the entrance to the large play structure and a large 3D panel Sherrif on the inside ramp railing leading to each of the slides and other play components. This $210,000 project is part of the City of Pensacola’s $21.7 million Direction 25 investment in parks and public spaces and is funded in part with Local Option Sales Tax revenue.

Tung is a graduate of the Fine Art Department of Taiwan Normal University. There he studied traditional oriental art and western art before coming to the United States. Tung is also a participant in the juried art show. The design is turned into a limited-edition poster, T-shirts, and other items which have become local collectors’ items. Speed Table Installation on Yucca Drive in District 2 The Santa Rosa County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved installing speed tables on Yucca Drive in District 2. The Public Works Department has been working with a Yucca Drive resident, who collected the required number of signatures under the approved Traffic Calming Policy. After collecting data and evaluating the site, staff determined that placing three speed tables on Yucca Dr would best address speeding concerns. The estimated cost for installation is approximately $17,500.00.

UWF WELCOMES 2026 NATIONAL MERIT FINALISTS AND TOP SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS The University of West Florida welcomed two National Merit Finalists this fall semester, bringing the recipients of this scholarship to 20 students since 2017. James Donald “Jack” Treick and Micaiah Henry are among the approximately 16,000 students across the country who met the requirements for finalist standing out of an estimated 1.3 million participating high school students in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship competition. LAST PRODUCED USMC HARRIER COMPLETES ITS FINAL MISSION The U.S. Marine Corps’ last produced AV-8B II+ Harrier traveled to Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, for its final mission this July. BuNo 166288 was demilitarized and made safe for display prior to departure by truck from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, and will remain on static display at the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola. BuNo 166288 was delivered by Boeing in September 2003 and logged over 5,800 flight hours over the years, deploying on multiple L-Class ships and land-based sites in support of combat operations. The aircraft’s final mission and destination was organized by Pablo “Louie” Sanchez, AV-8BV/STOL Attack Program Office (PMA257) Assistant Program Manager for Logistics (APML) and Harrier Museum Task Force Lead. Sanchez, a retired Marine Corps gunnery sergeant who has worked on the AV-8B program since 1989 as a mechanic and later a civilian within the program office, emphasized the importance of preserving the platform’s history. “Each aircraft has a story and BuNo 166288, being the last USMC-produced Harrier, seemed fitting to find its final home in the National Naval Aviation Museum,” Sanchez said. The Harrier is a single-engine, vertical/ short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) groundattack aircraft. It’s 55-year service in the U.S. Marine Corps began in 1971 with the Britishbuilt AV-8A. The platform evolved significantly in 1985 when the Marine Corps transitioned to the American-built McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II. For over four decades, the AV-8B Harrier II+ served as the cornerstone of the Marine Expeditionary Unit’s Aviation Combat Element. Operating afloat from amphibious assault ships and ashore from austere forward bases, these versatile aircraft provided vital close air support for Marines on the ground worldwide. “The arrival of the final produced AV-8B Harrier II+ at the National Naval Aviation Museum marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in Marine Corps aviation,” said Bonnie Town, National Naval Aviation Museum. “The National Naval Aviation Museum is deeply honored to preserve this historic aircraft as a lasting tribute to the extraordinary chapter of Marine Corps aviation history it represents.” In addition to residing at the museum, the aircraft’s previously removed F402-RR-408 engine will be displayed on a separate stand. The axial-flow, twin-spool turbofan engine features counter-rotating compressors and was specifically engineered to vector thrust. This revolutionary design enabled V/STOL capabilities and in-flight power nozzle breaking – a phenomenal engineering feat.
Several squadrons operated the Harrier over its 55-year tenure, but Marine Attack Squadron (VMA) 223, the Bulldogs, was the last, completing the platform’s final official flight June 3. As the final Marine Corps squadron to operate the AV-8B, VMA-223 commanding officer Lt. Col. John Cumbie sees the Pensacola museum display as a permanent tribute to the entire Harrier community. “Leading this squadron through the final operational phases of the legendary AV-8B Harrier and steering our transition to the F-35B Lightning is the honor of a lifetime,” said Cumbie. “Maintaining and operating the Harrier required tireless dedication and adherence to the highest professional standards—a testament to our aviators, maintainers, and support Marines alike.” Maj. Eric Scheibe, the squadron’s executive officer, said those high professional standards were essential for managing the unique operational demands of vertical-flight technology. “The challenge of operating and maintaining the platform required a tight-knit culture of professionalism from the pilots to the maintainers and support personnel,” said Scheibe. “As we move forward to the F-35 transition, that culture and professionalism of Marine fixed-wing attack will live on in the individual Marine.” For the VMA-223 Bulldog maintainers tasked with reassembling the aircraft at NAS Pensacola, the mission is deeply personal. “After 10 years of dedication to the AV-8B Harrier platform, I am sad to see it go,” said Staff Sgt. Christian Regueira. “Working on this aircraft has been a personal blessing to me.” The transition of the AV-8B to a static museum piece is a reflective moment for the entire Harrier community, but Gunnery Sgt. Bradley Birchfield viewed the assignment as the opportunity of a lifetime. “As an AV-8B maintainer, by placing these legacy aircraft into the National Naval Aviation Museum it is the perfect end to my Harrier career,” said Birchfield. While the Harrier’s close air support chapter may be closing, the transition to fifthgeneration stealth fighters ensures the future of Marine aviation remains highly lethal. The solid foundation set by the Harrier community—from development to sustainment— will support the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter program for decades of future. The F-35B replaces the AV-8B Harrier with increased sensors and speed and is increasingly effective in maintaining air dominance by delivering integrated sustainment capabilities to remain mission ready anytime, anywhere— a capability paved by decades of Harrier lessons learned.

ICE FLYERS SIGN FORWARD SEAN ROSS FOR 2026-27 SEASON The Pensacola Ice Flyers announced today that the team has signed forward Sean Ross for the 2026–27 season. Ross returns to Pensacola after spending the 2025–26 season with Nantes in France's Division 1, where he served as an alternate captain and recorded nine goals and 11 assists for 20 points in 27 regular-season games. The center also added a memorable postseason performance, scoring a hat trick — including the overtime game-winning goal — to help Nantes secure its place in Division 1 for the 2026–27 season. "Sean had a short stint with the Ice Flyers a couple years ago," said Head Coach Jeremy Gates. "He competes hard, plays a responsible game at both ends of the ice, and brings a professional approach every day. He's another player who strengthens the culture we're building and gives our lineup valuable depth." A native of Bracebridge, Ontario, Ross previously played for the Ice Flyers before making the move overseas. He joined Nantes ahead of the 2024–25 season after spending time in the ECHL with the South Carolina Stingrays and in the SPHL with Pensacola. During his two seasons in Nantes, Ross recorded 25 goals and
24 assists for 49 points in 61 games, establishing himself as a consistent offensive contributor and leader for the Corsaires. Ross brings professional experience on both sides of the Atlantic, along with a proven ability to contribute in important moments. His performance in Nantes' decisive relegation game was a perfect example, as he scored three times—including the overtime winner— to complete a 5–4 comeback victory and secure the club's Division 1 status. "I played for Pensacola at the end of my U Sports career, so I’ve experienced how passionate the fans are and how much they enjoy watching hockey. BEACHES TO WOODLANDS 2026 SCHEDULE
Escambia County and Santa Rosa County are excited to announce the deployment of the Esca-Rosa Regional Reefs, a series of new artificial reef sites made possible by more than $1.1 million in combined grant funding and a multi-year partnership between the two counties. Artificial reef modules are being deployed to construct 69 patch reefs using 209 Florida limestone modules and 132 Grouper reefs. These new reefs are located within the eastern portion of the Escambia East Nearshore Artificial Reef site. The Escambia County Marine Resources Division, in coordination with Santa Rosa County Natural Resources, is directing the placement of the reefs by Walter Marine, Inc. of Orange Beach, Alabama, using Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Natural Resource Damage Assessment funding. Some of the concrete prefabricated artificial reef modules incorporate "microhabitat features" created by George Stone Technical College's Welding Program using repurposed metal signposts, giving them a second life as an underwater micro-habitat for marine life. The next phase of the project will include seeking permits for new artificial reef sites 1 mile offshore at Park East and Portofino public access sites in Escambia County, in addition
