TRADITION TAKES THE RUNWAY

STEPPING OUT IN STYLE CELEBRATES 50 YEARS Photos courtesy of Baptist Health Care Foundation

By Morgan Cole

F

or 50 years, local faces have taken to the runway for Stepping Out in Style, turning a night of fashion into one of Baptist Health Care Foundation’s signature fundraisers. What began as a small luncheon in 1977 has evolved into a highly anticipated community tradition, drawing hundreds of attendees and support from local businesses year after year. This fall, the event will celebrate its 50th fashion show with a “50 Years of Fashion” theme, looking back at the styles, celebrations and memories that have shaped the fundraising event over the years. Hosted by the Women’s Board of Baptist Health Care Foundation, the milestone event will also bring a few changes, including a new venue and a Friday evening format. This year’s celebration will take place Friday, Oct. 23, at the Hilton on Pensacola Beach. The story of Stepping Out in Style begins a year before the first fashion show. The Women’s Board was founded in 1976 under the leadership of Jane Pace with just 25 members. Today, the group has more than 185 members and has raised nearly $4 million through fundraising efforts like Stepping Out in Style to support programs and services throughout Baptist Health Care. “Inspired by the dedication and service of its members, the event has been a beloved community tradition for 50 years,” Baptist Health Care Foundation Donor Relations Coordinator Melissa Schmiedeskamp said. Over the years, the event has evolved from a small luncheon into a full-scale fashion production, with Women’s Board members, sponsors, local retailers and long-

time attendees helping keep it going year after year. “Its continued success is a testament to the dedication of the Women’s Board members, generous sponsors, local businesses and loyal attendees,” Schmiedeskamp said. The 2026 event will trade its traditional Thursday format for a Friday evening at the beach, giving guests the option to make a night of it or turn the occasion into a weekend getaway. The evening begins at 5:30 pm with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction, followed by the program and live auction at 6:30 pm. The fashion show takes the runway at 7 pm. The anniversary program will revisit five decades of Stepping Out in Style and the impact the fundraiser has made along the way, both for Baptist Health Care and the community. On the runway, professional and community models will showcase fall looks from Bluetique, Colette, Dillard’s and The Market & Mainly Shoes. Each retailer will have its own runway segment, paired with a custom soundtrack to match the look and feel of its collection. But fashion is only part of the story. More than anything, Stepping Out in Style is about giving back to Baptist Health Care and supporting quality health care for the local community. Each year, the Women’s Board selects a program or service to benefit from the event’s proceeds. Last year, proceeds supported Gulf Breeze Hospital, with the event raising more than $163,000, the largest amount in its history. Proceeds from the 2026 event will again benefit Gulf Breeze Hospital, helping expand services, advance technology and support patient care. “As we prepare for our 50th fashion show, we are positioned for another record-breaking year,”

Schmiedeskamp said. “This continued growth would not be possible without the continued support of our sponsors, attendees and community partners.” The fundraiser is part of the larger mission of Baptist Health Care Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Baptist Health Care. As the area’s only community-owned and locally governed health care system, Baptist relies on donor support to help fund vital programs and services across its facilities. Getting an event of this size onto the runway also takes plenty of work behind the scenes. Planning happens throughout the year, with the Women’s Board Executive Committee meeting monthly to coordinate details, secure sponsorships, gather silent auction donations and recruit volunteers. This year’s executive committee includes President Cherie Meguess, Vice President Qwana Gable, Secretary Karen Brantley, Volunteer Chair Marcy Miller, Fundraising Chair Heather Irving, Membership

Chair Jen Smith and Parliamentarian Jodi Bell. The fundraiser itself is led by Melissa Melvin, who has worked with the Women’s Board for more than 20 years. Her resume includes producing major events around the country, including Super Bowl events and productions at Nashville’s Music City Center.

"Inspired by the dedication and service of its members, the event has been a beloved community tradition for 50 years." Local businesses also continue to play an important role in making the event possible. Sandy Sansing Dealerships is this year’s presenting sponsor, with local boutiques and community sponsors also

helping bring the 50th anniversary celebration to life. Sponsorship opportunities are still available for businesses and community supporters interested in taking part in the event. For guests, the evening offers plenty to enjoy. Admission includes general or VIP seating with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, silent and live auctions, the fashion show and a commemorative swag bag. “Every ticket purchased, sponsorship secured and auction item donated helps advance Baptist Health Care’s mission and strengthens the services available to patients and families throughout our region,” Schmiedeskamp said. Fifty years later, Stepping Out in Style remains a night of fashion with a purpose, bringing the community together to support Baptist Health Care and the community it serves. DUNWOODY PARK PLAYGROUND REPLACEMENT REVEALED The City of Pensacola Parks and Recreation Department has finalized the design for the replacement playground at Dunwoody Park, with installation scheduled for winter 2026. On July 3, 2026, Pensacola Parks and Recreation, in collaboration with District 4 City Councilman Jared Moore, hosted a public input session ahead of the annual Fourth of July Kids Bike Parade, organized by the Cordova Park Neighborhood Association. Residents were presented with two playground design options featuring ADAaccessible elements and were invited to provide feedback through a survey. Community input helped guide the selection of the

final playground design, ensuring the new play space reflects the needs and interests of the Dunwoody Park neighborhood. About The Design: The old western-themed playground will feature wood-tone panels, colorful slides, ramps and metal components. The main play structure features two deputies guarding the General Store at the entrance to the large play structure and a large 3D panel Sherrif on the inside ramp railing leading to each of the slides and other play components. This $210,000 project is part of the City of Pensacola’s $21.7 million Direction 25 investment in parks and public spaces and is funded in part with Local Option Sales Tax revenue.

ICE FLYERS SIGN DEFENSEMAN YAHOR RAMANAU FOR 2026-27 SEASON The Pensacola Ice Flyers announced today that the team has signed defenseman Yahor Ramanau for the 2026–27 season. Ramanau joins the Ice Flyers after beginning his professional career in North America during the 2025–26 season. The 6-foot-1, 174-pound left-shot defenseman spent time with the Twin City Thunderbirds and Biloxi Breakers, gaining his first experience at the professional level. A native of Minsk, Belarus, Ramanau's hockey development began at home under the guidance of his father, Oleg Ramanau, who played for the Belarus national team. Oleg coached Yahor during his early years in the sport, helping establish the foundation that would eventually lead him to pursue hockey in North America. "Yahor is a young defenseman who has continued to develop his game and has gained valuable professional experience over the last couple of seasons." said Head Coach Jeremy Gates. "We like his mobility, his ability to move the puck and the way he competes. We believe there's still a lot of upside in his game. Yahor is hungry for an opportunity to take the next step, and we're looking forward to working with him and helping him continue to develop here in Pensacola." Ramanau made his way to North America as a teenager, joining the Esmark Stars program in Pennsylvania. He spent four

seasons within the program, progressing from the U15 level through U18 AAA. During his 2020–21 U18 season, Ramanau recorded 41 points on 12 goals and 29 assists in 54 games, including six power-play goals and a shorthanded goal. His development with Esmark earned him an opportunity at the junior level, and he signed an NAHL tender with the Wichita Falls Warriors in 2021. The Esmark program described Ramanau as a highly skilled defenseman capable of blending Eastern European and North American styles of play. After continuing his development through junior hockey, Ramanau began his professional career during the 2025–26 season. He recorded his first professional points with the Twin City Thunderbirds, finishing his time with the club with two assists in 13 appearances. Now, Ramanau will bring his international background, North American experience and continued development to Pensacola as he looks to establish himself in the SPHL. "The Ice Flyers are a winning team and live in one of the best towns in the SPHL," said Ramanau. "My goal this year is to win the presidents cup and to grow as a player as much as a person." The 2026–27 season will mark Ramanau's first season with the Ice Flyers as he looks to take the next step in his professional career and make an impact on Pensacola's blue line.

NEW PARKING IMPROVEMENTS, RATES LAUNCH OCTOBER 5 Parking in Downtown Pensacola is getting a refresh as of October 5. That is the date when the temporary suspension on paid parking in the downtown core ends, and managed parking returns to 1,100 cityowned spaces while incorporating enhancements to improve ease for users and encourage turnover in high-demand areas. It’s important to remember that 1,600 cityowned spaces throughout downtown will remain free. City officials combined usage data with feedback from business owners, residents, and stakeholders to make decisions about where to help encourage parking turnover – and where to create additional free parking. That means adding 53 free spaces to the inventory on Chase Street (Zone 78) and West Intendencia (Zone 67 after 5 pm on weekends). It also means converting 48 spaces on Main Street between Baylen and Tarragona from limited twohour parking to unlimited $1 per hour parking. It also means making parking free on Sundays and Mondays – so that you have a weekday to run errands, do business or visit your favorite downtown business. Parking remains free on federal holidays and with a disabled placard or plate. Our website also features an interactive map to help you locate one of the 1,600 free parking spaces in and around the downtown core.

More Ways To Save The City is offering ways to save on parking including: Senior Pass: A $10 monthly flat fee that allows you to park in any city-owned spot for as long as you like as easily as if you were pulling into your driveway. The pass is tied to your tag, so you don’t need your phone, you don’t need an app, you just park and walk away. Available for seniors aged 65 or older, wherever you live (city, county, snowbird). Resident Discount: $5 annual registration with 75 cents an hour with the ParkMobile app. It is also important to remember that the City controls less than 15 percent of the total inventory of parking downtown. The revenue those spaces generate is reinvested in our city and in things like the Jefferson Street Parking Garage, safety lighting, landscaping, and more. To Recap What Will Be New • Sunday and Monday will be free. • Tuesday through Friday at 5 pm: $1 per hour. • Friday night and Saturday: $1.75 per hour. • Jefferson Street Garage: $1.75 always. • Fine escalation will reset at six months rather than at 12 months. • City parking is identified with blue signs and two-digit parking zone numbers. Anything else is a privately operated lot.

BAPTIST HEALTH CARE AND PAM HEALTH EXPAND JOINT VENTURE VISION Baptist Health Care and PAM Health are collaborating to address rapid growth and increasing demand for health care services across Northwest Florida and South Alabama. This updated partnership will bring 40 new acute care beds on the campus of Baptist Hospital and 60 new inpatient rehabilitation beds to Baptist Medical Park – Nine Mile. The enhanced bed capacity is a direct response to the increasing community need for inpatient acute care and inpatient rehabilitation beds in our region. Under the new approach, PAM Health and Baptist Health Care will develop a freestanding 60-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital on the Baptist Medical Park – Nine Mile campus, providing expanded capacity for specialized rehabilitation services. Baptist Hospital will retain the planned space in the Henderson Health Center, which will be converted into a 40-bed acute care hospital unit. “Our commitment to the Pensacola community has only grown stronger,” said Anthony Misitano, founder, chairman and chief executive officer, PAM Health. “When Baptist Health Care identified an urgent need for additional acute care capacity, we recognized an opportunity to think bigger. A freestanding, 60-bed hospital allows us to design a rehabilitation hospital without space constraints, featuring state-of-the-art therapy gyms and robust clinical programs that will serve as a true destination for patients recovering from serious injury or illness.” The addition of beds at the Baptist Hospital campus comes at a time when the need for inpatient care in the local area is increasingly high. The expanded unit will help provide care for more patients and support the growing health needs of the community. “Our community has a very clear need for additional inpatient acute care beds. This collaboration with PAM Health allows us to address critical capacity needs at Baptist Hospital while investing together in a bigger vision for the rehabilitation needs of our community,” said Brett Aldridge, executive vice president and chief operating officer, Baptist Health Care. "By expanding both inpatient capacity and rehabilitation services, we are creating greater access to high-quality care for our growing region. We are grateful for a partner whose mission and values align with our commitment to serving this community." The new inpatient acute care beds at Baptist Hospital are expected to be available in the coming months. Additional details and time-

NAVAL AIR STATION PENSACOLA HOLDS ANNUAL BELLS ACROSS AMERICA FOR FALLEN SERVICE MEMBERS CEREMONY AT NAVAL AVIATION MEMORIAL CHAPEL The Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) held the annual Bells Across America for Fallen Service Members ceremony at the Naval Aviation Memorial Chapel onboard the installation. Retired U.S. Army Cavalry Scout and combat veteran, Robert “Matt” McDaniel, was the guest speaker for the ceremony. As an initiative of the Navy Gold Star program, ceremonies were conducted concurrently throughout the United States to remember and celebrate the lives of fallen service members from all branches of the military, regardless of their cause of death. The Navy Gold Star program serves as the advocate for the families and provides support, information and services such as reserved Gold Star family parking. Base Commanders have designated parking in various locations such as the Commissary, Exchanges, FFSC and Military Treatment Facilities (MTF) to promote awareness, educate the military community on the sacrifices of families of deceased active duty and to honor their loss Capt. Chandra Newman, commanding officer of NAS Pensacola, delivered the opening remarks for the ceremony. “Your loved one has given the ultimate sacrifice and we know that there is nothing we can say or do that will completely comfort you in

your loss, but we are dedicated to delivering on the promise of taking care of our own by providing support to surviving families,” said Newman. “For us here at NAS Pensacola, there is no greater honor than to support the families of those who have died in service to our nation.” Bells Across America is held at U.S. military installations worldwide on the same day and is coordinated in partnership with the Gold Star Program. NGS Program supports family members of fallen military members by providing them with resources as well as assisting with counseling, financial planning and job hunting. NGS personnel also assist with paperwork and requests for documents while ensuring survivors remain connected with the Navy family. Founded in 1826, Naval Air Station Pensacola, known as the “Cradle of Naval Aviation,” supports operational and training missions for several tenant commands, Naval Air Technical Training Center, Naval Aviation Schools Command and Center for Technical Training. The installation also hosts Marine Aviation Training Support Group 21 and Marine Aviation Training Support Group 23 and serves as the headquarters for Naval Education and Training Command. In addition to an active airfield, NAS Pensacola maintains a deepwater port supporting operations for the U.S. Coast Guard.
