MAY SLOW RIDE ROLLS FROM NORTH HILL

Join Bike Pensacola at 6 pm on May 9 at 401 W Gonzalez St. for the most popular bike ride in town— the Slow Ride! Each month, we explore the quiet, scenic streets of Pensacola's many historic neighborhoods for a fun and leisurely ride among friends.

This month Bike Pensacola’s ride sponsor and host is the North Hill Preservation Association, which works diligently to preserve the historic character of North Hill--one of Pensacola's most interesting and historic neighborhoods. Following the Ride there will be a party with games and educational exhibits.

Because most cyclists are “self-taught,” each month we offer information about bicycle laws, safety tips, and addressing differ-

ent bicycling skills that will help keep rides safe and enjoyable. The ride will be about one hour and ten minutes long, at a casual pace. Nobody will be “dropped” or left behind. Children must be at least 10 years of age to ride their own bicycle, and ages 10 - 16 must be accompanied by an adult. No pets are allowed on the Rides. Cyclists under 16 must wear a helmet by law; ages 16 and up helmets are recommended but are not required by law. We will enjoy a ride escort by officers of the Pensacola Police Department. SHENAE DUNN RECOGNIZED AS FLORIDA APCO SUPERVISOR OF THE YEAR

Escambia County Emergency Communications is pleased to announce that Emergency Communications Supervisor Shenae Dunn has been named the 2025 Florida Association of Public Safety Communications Officials Supervisor of the Year. Shenae was honored Tuesday, April 29, during Florida APCO’s annual training conference in Fort Lauderdale.

Dunn has a long history of service to Escambia County and its residents and visitors, having recently celebrated 20 years with Emergency Communications. Her calling to serve runs in the family, as her father served as a local fire chief, and her mother served as an Emergency Communications supervisor for Escambia County. Her sister, Christy, also serves as an Emergency Communications Supervisor and recently celebrated 20 years of service with Emergency Communications.

“Shenae comes from a proud family tradition of public safety service and carries that legacy forward with dedication and heart,” said Emergency Communications Chief Andrew Hamilton. “For her, this work

is more than just a job, it’s a true calling. We are incredibly proud of her and honored to see her receive this award in recognition of her outstanding commitment and service.”

“I am incredibly honored and humbled to be selected as APCO’s Supervisor of the Year,” said Dunn. “Public Safety has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up in a fire station watching my dad lead as a fire chief and listening to my mom’s calm and steady voice on the radio as a 9-1-1 dispatcher. It wasn’t just their jobs, it was their calling, and it became mine, too.”

With the influence of her family shaping her career in public service, Dunn says there’s another group of people who have contributed to her success. “To my team, you mean the world to me. This recognition isn’t just mine, but a reflection of the amazing people I work beside every day.”

Escambia County Emergency Communications and the Department of Public Safety congratulate Shenae Dunn on being named the 2025 Florida APCO Supervisor of the Year.

COUNTY'S PROJECT RECONNECT PROGRAM REACHES MILESTONE OF 150 PEOPLE HELPED

Escambia County's Real Change Project Reconnect Program is celebrating a milestone of helping 150 individuals, including five children, reunite with their family, friends, or other support networks through free transportation assistance.

Real Change Project Reconnect was launched in February 2024, with a goal of reducing homelessness in Escambia County. The program offers resources and assistance for individuals to travel to locations where they have a better support system to help them get back on their feet.

The program is funded by Escambia County and facilitated by Ministry Village at Olive, Inc. Through Project Reconnect, eligible individuals and families are provided with a bus or plane ticket to their chosen destination, provided they can demonstrate that family, a job, or support network is in place for them.

Approximately $31,130 of the $53,527 allocated for the program has been spent for the 150 individuals who have received assistance so far. The Escambia County Board of County Commissioners approved an increase in funding for the program from $30,000 to $53,527, providing even more opportunities to help individuals seeking assistance.

Escambia County Governmental Liaison Liz Kissel, who manages the program for the county, said she's excited about using the additional funding to continue helping individuals who are looking for an opportunity to improve their circumstances.

"This program is truly changing lives for the better," Kissel said. "We are hearing so many heartwarming stories of people being reunited with their families, giving them a

ESCAMBIA COUNTY CONTINUES NATURE TRAIL IMPROVEMENTS AT SOUTHWEST SPORTS COMPLEX

The Escambia County Natural Resources Management Department is continuing to make improvements to the 1.3-mile nature trail at the Southwest Escambia Sports Complex, including ongoing conservation efforts, trail maintenance, plant species monitoring and more.

Escambia County Natural Resources Conservation Division staff planted 10 White-Topped Pitcher Plants along the trail last week as part of the county's ongoing conservation efforts in the area, in conjunction with celebrating the 55th anniversary of Earth Day. The White-Topped Pitcher Plant is endangered in Florida, with an estimated 97.5% of Pitcher Plant habitats destroyed in the southeastern United States due to ongoing development. The Pitcher Plant provides numerous benefits as a carnivorous plant, helping to reduce the insect population by attracting, trapping and absorbing insects.

The Southwest Escambia County Sports Complex nature trail was recently designated by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection as part of the Florida Greenways and Trails System, adding it to the state's network of greenways and trails throughout Florida. The trail lies within the Escambia County Southwest Greenway Corridor of the Florida Greenways and Trails System.

Future amenities along the nature trail will include additional benches, picnic areas, kiosks, and environmental education signage, which NRC recently received a grant from the Florida Forest Service to help purchase.

Escambia County Natural Resources staff are continuing initiatives to protect and improve the nature trail, which is part of more than 112 acres of forested conservation lands at the Southwest Escambia Sports Complex. Conservation efforts

include forestry mulching, annual invasive plant species monitoring and treatment, and plans for a prescribed burn later this year.

The Natural Resources Conservation Division of the Escambia County Natural Resources Department conducted over 67 acres of forestry mulching in fall 2023, which helps reduce overgrown vegetation and improves site safety. Through this process, small woody shrubs and invasive species are removed, leaving mature native trees to flourish. The unwanted vegetation is mulched and left onsite, improving soil health and preventing erosion. Forestry mulching reduces wildfire risks, improves forest health and increases area visibility.

The NRC division also conducts yearly invasive plant species monitoring and eradication treatment. Invasive plant species include cogon grass, Japanese climbing fern, and Chinese Tallow.

Future forest management plans for the conservation lands include a prescribed burn in fall 2025. Prescribed burns keep the understory open to allow grasses and other small plants, such as wiregrass and pitcher plants, to dominate the landscape. Ash keeps the soil fertile and encourages new plant growth in the spring. By reducing fuel loads and keeping the understory clear, land managers reduce the chances of a larger, more dangerous wildfire.

The Southwest Escambia Sports Complex is located at 2020 Bauer Road. The nature trail is open to the public daily from sunrise to sunset and can be accessed from several locations within the park. Please see the trail map for details.

Animal Welfare officers were responding to a wildlife rescue call on Wednesday, April 23 when they noticed the dog tied to a light pole and immediately began investigating.

The officers were ultimately able to confirm that it was the dog they had been searching for as part of an animal cruelty investigation initiated in March 2025 in coordination with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

Officers responded to an animal cruelty call in the 1500 block of North “Y” Street in late March after a neighbor’s security camera captured footage of a man harming his dog. The concerned neighbors shared the video to social media to help find the responsible individual.

Lead Animal Welfare Officer Sgt. Merideth Roberson received the video from a concerned citizen and immediately investigated it. She quickly contacted the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and handed the investigation over to deputies, who made an arrest the next day on Thursday, March 27.

However, the dog in the video was nowhere to be found.

“We never gave up looking for the dog,” Sgt. Roberson said. “Every time we would go out on patrol, we would always look for the dog. There was always hope that the dog would turn up some day.”

When Sgt. Roberson and Sgt. Mackenzie Hamel were headed to wildlife calls early in the afternoon on April 23, they noticed two dogs tied to a light pole on Mobile Highway.

“When we got closer, we looked at each other and thought, ‘That looks like the dog,’” Sgt. Roberson said. “As we got closer, we

became convinced that it was the dog. We saw the body camera footage but that was all we had to go off of.”

Once the dog was safely in the back of their truck, Sgt. Roberson and Sgt. Hamel examined the body camera footage to try and get a match for the dog.

“Once we saw the chest pattern, we knew one thousand percent that it was the dog,” Sgt. Roberson said. “The color of the dog’s fur, the black muzzle, everything looked exactly like it did in the body camera footage.”

The neighbors who originally recorded the video also positively identified the dog, confirming what Sgt. Roberson and Sgt. Hamel suspected.

The dog, whose name is Tupac, is a mixed breed and estimated to be about two or three years old. Despite what he has been through, Sgt. Roberson said Tupac appears to be in good spirits. Tupac will be evaluated by Escambia County Animal Welfare’s veterinarian and will remain in the care of Animal Welfare staff before determining his eligibility for adoption.

Escambia County Animal Welfare Director John Robinson said this rescue is another one of many examples of his team’s dedication to helping animals each day.

“Our officers are passionate about what we do, and we’re always working toward helping the animals in our community,” Robinson said. “I’m glad that our work with the Sheriff’s Office has led to charges and one less animal cruelty case in our community. Without their body camera footage, we would never have been able to identify the dog. I look forward to continuing our partnership and bringing these animal cruelty cases to justice.”

MULTIPLE WEEKEND WATER RESCUES HIGHLIGHT IMPORTANCE OF WATER SAFETY

Escambia County Public Safety responded to over 40 water rescues Saturday, April 26 on Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key, highlighting the importance of water safety and rip current awareness when visiting local beaches.

The responses were a collaborative effort between Escambia County EMS, Emergency Communications, Escambia County Fire Rescue, and Pensacola Beach Lifeguards, with additional assistance from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and LifeFlight.

The water rescues highlighted below are just several of many examples of the dedicated rescue efforts of Escambia County first responders on Saturday, April 26:

• Casino Beach Water Rescue: At 2:38 p.m., Escambia County Emergency Communications dispatched Escambia County Fire Rescue, the Pensacola Beach Lifeguards and Escambia County EMS to a water rescue call involving multiple patients at Casino Beach. The Pensacola Beach Lifeguards rescued four individuals from the water, and ECFR deployed a jet ski to search for a pediatric patient. Once the lifeguards located the patient, they were transported back to shore by ECFR and into the care of EMS. Once with EMS, the patient was transported to an area hospital. In total, six individuals were removed from the water during the rescue, with two being transported to area hospitals. Assistance during the effort was provided by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and LifeFlight.

• Perdido Key Drive Water Rescue: As the Casino Beach water rescue was unfolding, Escambia County Emergency Communications received a separate water rescue call for four swimmers in distress in the 16000 block of Perdido Key Drive. Escambia County Fire Rescue crews from Station #19 (Perdido Key), Station #8 (Innerarity Point), Station #14 (Pleasant Grove), and Escambia County EMS responded to the incident. Prior to ECFR and EMS arrival, all patients managed to safely make it back to shore. All patients were evaluated by EMS and did not require transportation to a hospital.

• Johnson Beach Road Water Rescue: At 5:31 p.m., Escambia County Fire Rescue and Escambia County EMS responded to a water rescue involving three patients in the 13000 block of Johnson Beach Road. Upon arrival, a pediatric patient and an adult patient were removed from the water by bystanders, and first responders rendered patient care. One adult patient was airlifted to an area hospital.

Following these incidents, Escambia County reminds residents and visitors to Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key to consistently exercise water safety.

"While enjoying the beach, we always strongly encourage our visitors to swim in a lifeguarded area," said Water Safety Chief Dave Greenwood. "Staying near a lifeguard greatly increases your chances of achieving a fun, safe day at the beach. If you do find yourself in a rip current, do not panic. Conserve your energy by floating on your back until you are out of the current. When out of the current, swim sideways into shore."

Pensacola Beach Lifeguards towers are located at Casino Beach and will expand to Quietwater Beach and Public Access #2

in Perdido Key beginning Memorial Day weekend. Additionally, lifeguards provide a roving patrol along the eight-mile stretch of Pensacola Beach and all public access points in Perdido Key.

Additional Information:

• Escambia County Emergency Communications received 9-1-1 calls, utilized emergency mapping to locate the individuals, and dispatched and coordinated the appropriate response from the Pensacola Beach Lifeguards, Escambia County EMS, Escambia County Fire Rescue, and other relevant agencies.

• Between 2- 4 p.m. on Saturday, Escambia County EMS responded to 17 water rescues, each response including the engagement of patient care.

Rip Currents

Rip currents are powerful channels of water that are caused by breaks in the sandbar just offshore. Currents flowing away from the coast move fastest where the sandbar is reduced or not present and the water is deeper. They are the greatest danger to beach patrons and account for more than 80% of water rescues performed by lifeguards. Escambia County strongly urges all beach patrons to remain near a lifeguard. Even when a green flag is flying, there is still a rip current risk.

If caught in a rip current, a swimmer can escape by swimming sideways in the direction the current is pulling them, or parallel to the shore. If the current is too strong, a swimmer should go with the flow of the current until it weakens, then swim back to shore at an angle away from the rip current.

Pensacola Beach Flag System

The Pensacola Beach Lifeguards fly surf warning flags in several locations along Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key. The colored flag system measures the following surf risks:

• Green flag - Low Hazard: Generally calm surf and currents

• Yellow flag - Medium Hazard: Moderate surf and/or currents

• Red flag - High Hazard: High surf and/ or dangerous currents; beach patrons encouraged to remain out of the water

• Double red flag - Water Closed: No swimming or wading Purple flag - Stinging Marine Life: Flown when jellyfish, Portuguese man o'war or other stinging marine life are present Beach patrons are advised that the absence of a beach flag in their location does not ensure water safety. For daily flag conditions and more information about Pensacola Beach Lifeguards, visit the Pensacola Beach Lifeguards page on MyEscambia.com or the Pensacola Beach Lifeguards Facebook. Sign Up for Pensacola Beach Surf Warning Flag Text Alerts

The Pensacola Beach Lifeguards send out daily surf warning flag text alerts to update daily beach conditions. If beach conditions change throughout the day, a separate text is sent to reflect the change. To sign up, text “PBFLAGS” TO 888-777. Once registered, a confirmation text from Everbridge Nixle Alerts will be sent along with a welcome message from the Pensacola Beach Lifeguards. Respond to the text message with your email address to receive email alerts. Text “STOP” to 888-777 to discontinue receiving daily notifications.

• Public spaces that connect communities

• Neighborhoods that celebrate culture and honor legacy
