MEMORIAL DAY PRIDE

May brings Memorial Day, a time to celebrate freedom and honor those who bravely served. Here in Pensacola, the holiday also marks a powerful moment of celebration for the local LGBTQ+ community. The city’s largest Memorial Day gathering takes place throughout the weekend on the East side of Pensacola Beach, where LGBTQ+ individuals and allies gather to celebrate love, joy and resilience.

This annual celebration has deep roots in Pensacola’s queer history; with the beachfront tradition tracing back to as early as the 1950s. It all started with Ray and Henry Hillyer, two LGBTQ+ Pensacola locals who wanted access to queer magazines and literature. This mission wasn’t as easy as going to a library or accessing it online, though. At that time, a man reading gay literature would have been heavily condemned, so the Hillyers opened a post office box under the name “Emma Jones,” and had a female friend retrieve the mail for them. The female pseudonym decreased suspicion, allowing the papers to be delivered without any interception from postal employees.

Eventually, the Hillyers began inviting other members of the local LGBTQ+ community over to their home to share and read the literature they received through their undercover post office box. These regular gatherings would become known

as the Emma Jones Society (EJS).

Founded in 1957, EJS grew steadily over the next few years, eventually going on to host public gatherings for the local LGBTQ+ community, including on Pensacola Beach.

Though these gatherings weren’t held only during Memorial Day weekend, they are attributed as starting the tradition of the annual LGBTQ+ Memorial Day celebration.

The EJS beach parties continued on for years, and even grew to be hosted throughout the city, most notably at Pensacola’s Hotel San Carlos. These events would often include dancing, socializing and drag performances.

Unfortunately, in 1974, the celebrations came to a halt when EJS and the queer community were met with local backlash. Since the parties had continuously grown and were receiving more media attention, locals were worried that Pensacola would gain a reputation of being a gay destination, which was heavily stigmatized and denounced by many in the community during this time.

After the shutdown of EJS, Pensacola’s LGBTQ+ community sat quiet for a few years. The Memorial Day tradition reignited with small gatherings in the 1980s, which progressively got larger again. By the 1990s, the weekend-long celebration was back in full swing on Pensacola Beach. The parties included all of the elements of original EJS parties—socializing, dancing and drag—as well as music from DJs and other live entertainment.

As the celebration gained popularity, more and more LGBTQ+ people from Pensacola and beyond began flocking to the beach. This significant influx of both locals and tourists spending money on Pensacola Beach provided a significant boost to local businesses.

In 1993, the LGBTQ+ gatherings were once again under attack, with prominent locals and politicians voicing their concern that Pensacola would become the “gay capital of the south. “

Thankfully, many business owners stood with the LGBTQ+ community, likely incentivized by the amount of profit that they made from queer customers. Several businesses and LGBTQ+ visitors themselves began to stamp their cash with a pink triangle or the words “gay money” as a way to symbolize their contributions to the local economy—an estimated $25 million in 1993 alone. This piece of history is how Pensacola’s popular STAMPED Film Festival received its name.

Since the 1990s, the queer community’s Memorial Day celebration has continued to draw tens of thousands of people to Pensacola Beach. The weekend continues to be one of the most lucrative weekends for Pensacola Beach, largely in part due to the spending of the LGBTQ+ community.

According to Visit Pensacola, in 2023, 88 percent of event attendees reported that the Memorial Day LGBTQ+ event was their main

reason for traveling to the Pensacola area. More than 33 percent of these visitors traveled from other counties, with a majority frequenting local bars and restaurants throughout their stay. With travel parties spending an average of around $600 per day—about $145 a person—the financial impact of this event has served as a significant boost to the local economy.

With more widespread acceptance and support for the LGBTQ+ community, this festive weekend celebration is here to stay. Today, queer people of all ages flock to the beach to gather in celebration of their love and individuality. These celebrations still take place on the East side of Pensacola Beach, primarily centered around Park East near Portofino Island Resort.

Today, Memorial Day weekend consists of daytime relaxation and socialization and, of course, plenty of nighttime fun. Daytime is focused on leisure and community. Beachgoers typically set up tents to provide themselves with the shade needed to endure the beach conditions all day long. Throughout the day, attendees can be seen lounging on the beach, playing games in the sand and splashing in the Gulf.

Long after the sun goes down, the real parties begin to kick off. The weekend’s nightlife centers around “circuit parties,” run by promoters who host rave-inspired all-night parties with DJs, pulsing music, flashing lights and plenty of dancing.

Johnny Chisholm, co-owner of the now-defunct gay nightclub, Emerald City, has served as the primary host of these local Memorial Day parties since the 1990s. Chisholm initially began hosting the parties because he himself enjoyed attending the annual celebration at the beach. Today, these popular parties attract national entertainers and thousands of lively attendees each year.

The parties are typically hosted under a large white tent at Park East. Many of the parties are alcohol-free for sober partygoers. The events typically start in the late night and run until the early hours of the morning. It is common for the party to still be rolling on while daytime attendees claim their spots in the sand!

From the silenced secrets of the EJS in the 20th century to the high-flying rainbow flags of today, Pensacola’s Memorial Day gatherings are a testament to the enduring strength and resilience of the local LGBTQ+ community. Whether you are an up-all-night party type or just want to connect with your community, there is a place for you at a Memorial Day weekend gathering.

This year’s Memorial Day Weekend celebration will run from May 22 to 26. For tickets and information on Chisholm’s upcoming parties and events, visit the website johnnychisholm.com and follow @memorialweekendpensacola on Facebook and Instagram. ■

MAYOR D.C. REEVES LAUNCHES “MAYOR’S CHILDCARE ACCESS PROGRAM” TO EXPAND SUPPORT FOR PENSACOLA FAMILIES

Mayor D.C. Reeves unveiled the Mayor’s Childcare Access Program today, a bold new initiative aimed at expanding high-quality, affordable childcare options for families across the City of Pensacola. The program is a strategic effort to better utilize city resources and to leverage the Community Redevelopment Agency’s portion of funding from the Escambia Children’s Trust, ensuring local children and working families have the support they need.

“Access to affordable, quality childcare is not just a family issue — it’s an economic issue,” said Mayor Reeves. “By aligning city resources and targeting available funding from the Escambia Children’s Trust, we will build the kind of infrastructure to allow Pensacola families to thrive and our economy to grow.”

This initiative also reflects Mayor Reeves’ leadership on the national stage as Chair of the Jobs, Education, and Workforce Committee with the U.S. Conference of Mayors, where he has championed innovative, communitydriven strategies to address the childcare crisis facing cities across the country.

The Mayor’s Childcare Access Program will prioritize:

• Supporting and expanding existing childcare centers in underserved areas, particularly within the CRA district.

• Providing direct grants and technical assistance to childcare providers to improve capacity, quality, and workforce development.

Partnering with local employers to incentivize on-site or subsidized childcare solutions.

• Connecting families with trusted childcare resources and streamlining access to available subsidies and scholarships. Expanding childcare access aligns with recent findings from the Florida Chamber of Commerce, which has identified childcare availability as a critical factor in workforce

participation and economic competitiveness statewide. Employers and communities across Florida are increasingly recognizing that access to childcare is a top priority for attracting and retaining talent.

To lead this effort and other related initiatives, the city has hired Theresa Cserep as its Education and Youth Programs Officer — a newly created role under Mayor Reeves’ administration. Cserep brings a decade of experience in educational policy, youth engagement, and nonprofit coordination, and will work closely with city departments, childcare providers, the Escambia Children’s Trust, and community stakeholders to implement the new program.

“Theresa’s passion and expertise make her the ideal person to help us build a more supportive environment for Pensacola’s youngest residents,” Reeves said. “This is about investing in our future — starting with the very first years of life.”

“It’s an honor to contribute to strategic education and youth development initiatives. These are areas essential to the future of our community,” says Cserep. “I look forward to working with schools, community partners and city leaders to ensure our children and young people are supported, empowered and not overlooked.”

As a key part of the initiative’s launch, the City of Pensacola will host a Childcare Summit Wednesday, May 28. The summit will bring together a diverse group of local and state experts, childcare providers, business leaders and community advocates. It will serve as a platform for collaboration, idea-sharing, and actionable planning to strengthen childcare access across the region.

This investment, the second in the state following Jacksonville last year, is expected to collect an estimated 26 million pounds of new recyclables over the next decade. This includes more than 1 million pounds of polyethyl -

ene terephthalate (PET) plastic and 338,000 pounds of aluminum, materials essential for creating recyclable bottles and cans.

This project represents another step forward for Every Bottle Back—an initiative of The Coca-Cola Company, Keurig Dr Pepper and PepsiCo—that launched in 2019 and has reached more than 14 million Americans through nearly $30 million in funding nationwide. In total, the investments across 54 communities are estimated to yield more than 711 million new pounds of recycled PET and 45 million more pounds of recycled aluminum over the next decade. About American Beverage’s Every Bottle Back initiative

The Every Bottle Back initiative is an integrated and comprehensive initiative by The Coca-Cola Company, Keurig Dr Pepper and PepsiCo, alongside sustainability leaders Closed Loop Partners, The Recycling Partnership and World Wildlife Fund, designed to improve plastics circularity. FIRST LOGGERHEAD TURTLE NEST RECORDED ON PERDIDO KEY

Escambia County Sea Turtle Patrol volunteers celebrated Mother’s Day with the first nest of the 2025 season on Perdido Key early Sunday morning. This nest is the earliest nest on record for Perdido Key and ties for the earliest nest on Pensacola Beach since county surveys began in 2019.

Heavy rains and Sargassum have made for tricky patrol conditions in recent days, but eagle-eyed patrollers spotted the loggerhead nest despite high surf and overnight rain. Loggerheads account for 90% of nests laid in Escambia County. May and June are the busiest nesting months in Escambia County, so more nests are expected in the coming weeks.

Three other species of sea turtle nest on Escambia County beaches May-October, including greens, leatherbacks and the rare Kemp’s Ridley. Once laid, the eggs will incubate for around 60 days, after which hatchlings emerge under the cover of darkness and make their way to the Gulf.

Sea turtles of all sizes face many threats. For nesting females, white lights on the beach may deter them from nesting or cause them to abandon a nesting attempt. Furniture, tents and toys left on the beach overnight create obstacles for nesting turtles and can injure or trap them on the beach.

Help protect nesting sea turtles and other coastal wildlife this summer by remembering:

• Lights Out! Female turtles prefer dark, quiet beaches for nesting and hatchlings need dark skies to find the Gulf. Leave the flash-

lights and cell phones at home or use a red flashlight when on the beach at night. Turn off beach-facing lights and close windows and curtains to keep our beaches dark.

• Leave No Trace! Remove all furniture and toys from the beach when you’re done for the day, including hammocks, tents, canopies, chairs, toys and sports equipment.

• Look Out Below! Boaters should be on the lookout for sea turtles and manatees resting at the surface or feeding in shallow waters. Use a lookout when operating at high speeds and slow down when approaching docks and marinas.

• If You Dig It, Fill It! Large holes are hazardous to both wildlife and people. Avoid digging large holes and fill in any holes, trenches or moats at the end of your visit. Follow the Escambia County Natural Resources Management Department on Facebook and Instagram at @ECNaturalResources for future updates and visit MyEscambia.com/seaturtles for more information about sea turtles and other coastal wildlife in Escambia County.

If you encounter a nesting turtle, turn off all lights and retreat a safe distance away. Dead or injured sea turtles should be reported to Escambia County Marine Resources at 850-281-5904 or the FWC Wildlife Alert line at 1-888-404-FWCC (3922). All sea turtle work performed by Escambia County was completed under Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Marine Turtle Permits #032a and #202.

Background

In April 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil platform exploded, killing 11 workers and leading to the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history. As a result, the RESTORE Act was signed into law in 2012, directing 80% of administrative and civil penalties back to the impacted areas of the Gulf Coast through the Gulf Coast Restoration Trust Fund.

The U.S. Department of Treasury serves as the administrator of the RESTORE Act Direct Component, one of five funding

streams through the RESTORE Act. In Florida, RESTORE Direct Component projects are selected and implemented by the 23 Gulf Coast counties, contingent on compliance with the RESTORE Act and acceptance by the U.S. Department of Treasury.

To ensure projects are consistent with the RESTORE Act and obtain broad-based participation in the project selection process, Treasury requires submittal and acceptance of a Multi-Year Implementation Plan. The U.S. Department of Treasury approved Escambia County’s Initial MYIP on Oct. 20, 2017, which included 10 projects selected by the Escambia County Board of County Commissioners.

The first amendment to the MYIP was approved by the U.S. Department of Treasury on June 16, 2020, which included modification to three projects included in the Initial MYIP and the addition of eight new projects. The second amendment to the MYIP was approved by the U.S. Department of Treasury on Aug. 16, 2021, which proposed the addition of funds to one existing project and the addition of a new project. The third amendment to the MYIP was approved by the U.S. Department of Treasury on Feb. 16, 2024, which proposed the project alterations to two existing projects and the addition of eight new projects.

The RESTORE Act and the U.S. Department of Treasury require the county to complete a 45-day public comment period to obtain broad-based participation from the public prior to the submittal and approval of MYIP Amendment 4. Escambia County will take all public comments under advisement and reflect those comments in the public comment section of this document following the public comment period closure.

U.S. COAST GUARD STATION PENSACOLA FIRST RESPONDERS CONDUCT EXERCISE ON NAS PENSACOLA

U.S. Coast Guard Sector Mobile conducted a mass rescue operation exercise May 1 at Coast Guard Station Pensacola, simulating a large-scale maritime emergency.

The exercise, designed to enhance regional emergency response capabilities, involved the deployment of rescue mannequins to simulate multiple victims in the water. During the operation, U.S. Coast Guard service members and Escambia County Fire & Rescue and Escambia County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) worked side by side to test real-time coordination, communication and rescue procedures.

“There’s nothing more important to us than having those strong partnerships,” said Lt. Cmdr. Mike Francis, Coast Guard Sector Mobile response department head. “The ability to multiply our force on the water is critical, especially when you have 10 to 20 people in the water. We really do rely on the relationship that the command and Naval Air Station Pensacola build.”

The training scenario emphasized the importance of interagency collaboration in

responding to high-casualty maritime incidents. Participants included local, federal and military personnel, all focused on improving response speed, efficiency and teamwork under pressure.

“It’s very realistic – we don’t want to think about that happening, but there is the potential for that situation to occur,” Francis said. “Operationally getting out on the water and working together in real-time will prepare us to execute this operation.”

NAS Pensacola, known as the “Cradle of Naval Aviation”, serves as a strategic asset in regional emergency readiness. Along with numerous aviation and cyber warfare training activities, NAS Pensacola maintains an operational airfield and deepwater port, preserving U.S. Armed Forces operational platforms.

U.S. Coast Guard Sector Mobile supports a wide range of Coast Guard operations to include search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, marine environmental protection, aids to navigation, and ports, waterways, and coastal security from the Pearl River in Mississippi to the Jefferson County line in Florida.

Your call is free. When you meet with your lawyer, there will be a small fee of $40.00 for the first half-hour consultation. Fees for additional services after the first half-hour are arranged between you and your lawyer.

IHMC LECTURE SERIES PRESENTS DR. JOHNATHAN EDWARDS

Ketamine: From Anesthetic to Healer

May 22: Reception: 5:30 pm — Talk: 6 pm Dr. Johnathan Edwards is a practicing anesthesiologist and visiting physician at IHMC. With 20 years of experience, he has used ketamine extensively to treat mental health issues. Multiple studies have demonstrated the efficacy of ketamine to treat suicidal ideation, depression, and PTSD. Although controversial, psychedelics such as ketamine have been shown to save lives.

Ketamine was developed in the 1960s in the search for an anesthetic that did not cause post-operative delirium. In the 1990s, researchers found that in low doses it had a huge effect on eating-disorder patients. Later it was tried in treatment-resistant depression patients, then in the prevention of suicidal ideation. Seating is limited on a first come, first serve basis. To register, call 850-2024462 or visit ihmc.us/life/evening_lectures/ pensacola-lecture-series.
