THE CALMING SEAS

At times, the world can feel a little loud and overwhelming. For children who are still learning to self-regulate, and for individuals with neurodivergence or developmental disabilities, navigating crowded, noisy environments that feel seemingly out of their control can be especially challenging.
What’s emerging to help restore calm are sensory specific spaces that offer controlled atmospheres with therapeutic, calming and engaging experiences for those with autism, ADHD or developmental disabilities. These spaces help reduce stress and anxiety by providing a planned break from intense stimuli such as bright lights, loud noises and crowded environments. They also support physical needs by offering opportunities for movement or calming pressure, all working together to promote emotional self-regulation.
Pensacola has become increasingly sensory friendly, with locations like Pensacola Little Theatre integrating sensory-safe performances like June B. Jones The Musical and Captains for Kids providing a free day on the water for children with special needs. More prominently, a sensory safe space is found at Pensacola Children’s Museum, which offers a dedicated sensory area and exhibit aptly named The Calming Seas. Supported by a portion of a $100,670 Impact100 Pensacola Bay Area Community grant, this exhibit serves as a quiet space for guests to center themselves while amongst the bustle of the Children’s Museum, and includes a tactile octopus mural, mesmerizing bubble tube and sensory toys to create a peaceful space for children to regulate.
“I really thought it was important to meet the needs of all our visitors,” Visitor Experience Manager of UWF Historic Trust Wendi Davis said. “The museum is only two floors and
it can become loud, overwhelming and overstimulating, so we knew we needed a space to help bring the calm back.”
Although Davis was a major proponent of getting a grant to incorporate a sensory space in the Pensacola Children’s Museum, she notes it would not have been possible without the support of Dr. Kimberlee Spencer. Dr. Spencer not only wrote a letter of support for Davis to include with her proposal for the IMPACT100 grant, but she also provided guidance and a willingness to assist to make the space as sensory-inclusive as possible. Everything included in the exhibit supports a child and parent’s ability to calm, focus and re-engage rather than just being decoration.
“What I hope people understand is that sensory-friendly spaces aren’t just accommodations, they’re invitations,” Dr. Spencer said. “They say to families who have often felt excluded or judged: you belong here too. When a child with sensory differences has access to a welldesigned environment and experiences success and joy there, that shapes their trajectory. Pensacola needed this. I’m glad the museum had the vision to make it happen.”
Dr. Spencer has worked for 20 years at the intersection of child development, early childhood education and family services, working with families of children under three who have developmental differences, including autism and sensory processing challenges. Before transitioning to independent practice, she served as the Program Director for Early Intervention in the four Emerald Coast counties and then as Deputy Director of Early Intervention for the state of Georgia – she has worked at the direct service level, the regional program level and the state systems level.
Dr. Spencer utilizes Pensacola Children’s Museum for some of her therapy sessions, because it
provides opportunities to work on social engagement with other children present and allows for practicing regulation and community participation in a real setting. According to Spencer, a children’s museum offering something to explore and engage with is inherently motivating for young children, and early intervention is most effective when it happens in natural, meaningful environments that most families actually go to.
“When I can coach a parent in a real environment while their child is genuinely interested and activated, the learning can stick in a way that’s different than in a therapy clinic,” Dr. Spencer said. “ The Calming Seas gives us a space where we can work on regulation and engagement without the child being overwhelmed before we even start.”
Officially opened on December 20 of last year, The Calming Seas marks the first sensory-specific exhibit offered in a museum in Pensacola. Located on the museum’s second floor, it is the only gallery in the museum that has a door to help keep loud activity out and the quiet in.
The space includes a bubble wall to provide a calming, gentle stream of bubbles and light meant to reduce overstimulation. The custom tactile mural offers rough and smooth, soft and firm, plus angular, curved, embossed and recessed features to help users develop sensory awareness. It is interactive without being overwhelming to help develop fine motor skills. Moreover, there are weighted lap pads from KultureCity, books and fidget toys, along with gel floor tiles to support sensory integration with tactile and visual stimulation. There’s also a beach discovery bag that has a section of weighted sand and toys with the idea of exploring and manipulating the sand to discover the hidden toys beneath.
As far as lighting goes, there are no dimmers in the space but the lights typically remain off. This is because
the room has a window covered by a serene image of waves, which offers a muted natural light that brightens the room without being as overwhelming as fluorescent overhead lights –which in addition to being harsh on the eyes can also be heard by children with increased sound sensitivity.
While there is not a maximum capacity for the sensory space, families have been able to use the space without being overwhelmed with usually only one family utilizing the space at a time. Families can remain in the space as long as they wish, as long as they are not interrupting another child’s opportunity to use the space as intended. The only rules for the space are to make sure the door remains shut and to respect other visitors sharing the same space.
It is also a requirement that all staff get sensory-inclusive training funded as part of the Impact100 grant. Staff training is completed through an online course by KultureCity, who also provided sensory bags for guests to use throughout their stay at the museum.
As the Pensacola Children’s Museum updates their website, they will add to their story so visitors know more about what to expect when they enter the museum. It will provide images of the visitor’s service desk and staff as well as directions to where the quiet sensory space is – eliminating potential uncertainties of how a visit will go or what it will look like, especially for individuals who prefer a plan.
Davis anticipates that the The Calming Seas sensory space will evolve over time to better fit the needs of sensory-sensitive guests. She looks forward to the possibility of including new features such as a projector and fish tank.
“This space is a start and I’m just so excited that we were able to make these changes in the museum,” Davis said. “It won’t be static: We will be adding things, rotating things.
We want to continue to develop the space for the needs of our neurodivergent guests and help everyone feel supported.”

Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) announced 13 scholarships for students pursuing higher education or technical training, including three new workforce development scholarships introduced this year. The expanded offerings include three workforce development scholarships aimed at meeting the growing demand for skilled trades and technical professionals in Florida's energy sector. UWF CENTER FOR CYBERSECURITY AND AI EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE FIELD
The University of West Florida placed third in the 2025 CAE-CD Community Outreach Award Competition, which is given by the National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity Community to a CAE-Cyber Defense designated institution. Dr. Eman El-Sheikh, associate vice president for the UWF Center for Cybersecurity and AI, also received an award for Outstanding Contributions to the CAE Cyber AI Community and Nation. These awards were announced at the 2026 CAE in Cybersecurity Symposium held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on April 28-30.
“National recognition for both our Center for Cybersecurity and AI and Dr. Eman El-Sheikh speaks to the extraordinary leadership and innovation happening at UWF,” said UWF President Manny Diaz Jr. “Between community outreach, workforce development and helping shape the future of cybersecurity and AI education across the globe, UWF is not only preparing tomorrow’s cyber leaders but helping define the future of the field.”
This is the fourth consecutive year UWF has placed in the top three out of nearly 500 universities and colleges designated as NCAE-C institutions across the U.S. that were eligible for the award. The CAE-CD Community Outreach Award was established to showcase CAE-designated institutions that are going above and beyond and recognize their outstanding community outreach initiatives.
The UWF Center for Cybersecurity and AI received the CAE-CD Community Outreach Award for its outstanding community outreach activities that promote cybersecurity awareness, education and research including:
• Workforce Development Programs: The UWF Center for Cybersecurity and AI offered numerous workforce development programs, including free training for veterans, transitioning military, first responders and government personnel through the CyberSkills2Work Program and Florida Cybersecurity Training Program.
• GenCyber Pathways to Cyber Summer Camps: The UWF Center for Cybersecurity hosted two GenCyber camps and yearround activities for rising seventh- through 10th-graders. The students received an introduction to the various aspects of
cybersecurity work focused on the six GenCyber Concepts: confidentiality, integrity, availability, defense in depth, keep it simple and think like the adversary.
• UWF Night of Cyber: The UWF Center for Cybersecurity and AI promoted cybersecurity awareness, careers, educational programs and resources to students and the community. Night of Cyber explores various cyber career opportunities for high school and college undergraduate students and adult learners. Students hear from industry professionals and academic instructors about the opportunities and paths to achieve their dreams.
• Faculty Development Workshops: The UWF Center for Cybersecurity and AI hosted workshops for faculty from across the nation to help them integrate cutting edge topics and high impact learning practices into their programs and prepare the future AI-enabled cybersecurity workforce.
Other Community Engagement: Throughout the year, UWF and Center personnel participated in numerous community events, conferences and media interviews to share their expertise and enhance cybersecurity awareness and education.
“Cybersecurity and AI are transforming every sector of society, and preparing the future workforce requires innovation, collaboration and national leadership,” said Dr. Eman El-Sheikh, associate vice president for the UWF Center for Cybersecurity and AI. “These recognitions reflect UWF’s contributions to national efforts that advance cyber-AI education, strengthen workforce pipelines and expand opportunities for communities across Florida and our Nation.”
Dr. El-Sheikh was one of five faculty members nationwide to receive an award for Outstanding Contributions to the CAE Cyber AI Community and Nation. Her contributions include helping develop the CAE Cyber AI program framework, which defines the requirements for CAE institutions to develop AI-Cyber or Secure-AI programs of study, co-developing an AI and ML Fundamentals course that will be publicly available, serving on the CAE Cyber AI Community of Practice Steering Committee, and organizing a Cyber AI session at the CAE in Cybersecurity Symposium.

EMPOWERING TOMORROW'S LEADERS: FLORIDA POWER & LIGHT COMPANY ENERGIZES LOCAL TEACHERS AND STUDENTS
The Escambia County Public Schools Foundation received a generous donation from Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) in support of the Tools for Teachers supply warehouse. The announcement was made during the Pensacola Blue Wahoos’ Education Day; sponsored by FPL, the event brings together thousands of local students for an educational day at the game.
“The Escambia County Public Schools Foundation is so grateful for the partnership and support of Florida Power and Light Company,” said Jo McArthur Executive Director, Escambia County Public Schools Foundation. “Today’s generous donation is only a small part of the big difference FPL makes in Education in Escambia County and across the state. Because of their support, teachers will not have to go into their own pockets to purchase supplies for thousands of students across the county through our Tools for Teachers program.”
Tools for Teachers is an online Teacher Resource Store that provides free classroom materials for teachers and their students, helping to prevent teachers from spending their own money on much needed supplies. Funded through grants and donations like this, the store carries items such healthy snacks for students, bandaids, pencils, erasers, copy paper, glue sticks, ziplock bags, paper towels, tissues, dry erase markers and more. FPL’s $12,500 donation will provide free classroom supplies for hundreds of teachers.

president and general manager for Northwest Florida. "Our investment in teachers and our help with the provision of essential resources reflect our intention to prepare students with the necessary knowledge to achieve their objectives."

UNPLUG, EXPLORE AND CREATE AT THE MESS HALL THIS SUMMER
This summer, the Pensacola MESS Hall invites families to step away from screens and into a world of hands-on discovery. With a new interactive Artificial Intelligence (AI) Corner and a lineup of engaging Thursday programs, visitors of all ages can explore science, technology, and creativity in a fun, tactile way.
The new AI Corner offers visitors a chance to experience the core concepts behind artificial intelligence through handson activities designed specifically for general audiences. Rather than focusing on screens, this exhibit features hands-on activities which emphasize the ideas behind AI, like pattern recognition, decision-making, and training systems. Train a Lego “computer” to always win at NIM. Use probability and a “small language model” to write poetry. Classify aliens using feature extraction to organize them into a pattern.
In addition to the new exhibit, the MESS Hall will host special Thursday programs from 1 - 4 PM throughout the summer. Activities will rotate weekly, giving visitors something new to explore each time they visit. Activities will include bubbles, slime, and rockets, so stay tuned to our social media to find out the theme of each week. We will also host special guest scientists during select weeks, including Rick O’Connor of Florida Sea Grant who will present local wildlife on July 2.
Adults can also join the fun with special adults-only game nights on the fourth Tuesday of each month from 6-9 PM. Engage with other board game fans over unique games of
strategy, collaboration, and chance. Whether you're new to tabletop games or a seasoned strategist, there’s something for everyone.
MESS Hall staff will guide the fun, making it easy to jump in and play. Light refreshments provided. Pre-registration requested.
Throughout the summer, the MESS Hall continues its mission of encouraging curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking through hands-on exploration. In a time when many learning experiences are screen-based, the MESS Hall offers a space where families can unplug and engage directly with science in meaningful, memorable ways.
All activities are included with admission. The special presentations are appropriate for ages 6 and up.
In addition to the special activities, visitors can also explore the MESS Hall’s many other exhibits and mess kits, which provide open-ended opportunities to investigate math, engineering, science, and stuff.
Summer hours at the MESS Hall are Monday through Saturday, 10 AM – 5 PM, and Sunday 1 PM – 5 PM. Admission is $15 per person for ages 3 and up.

Founded in 2012, the Pensacola MESS Hall is not a typical science museum. It’s all hands-on science. Visitors to the facility enjoy exploring math, engineering, science, and stuff with an ever-changing menu of mess kits, activities and exhibits. ROTARY CLUBS OF PENSACOLA NAME 2026 ETHICS IN BUSINESS AWARD RECIPIENTS
The University of West Florida Lewis Bear Jr. College of Business and the Combined Rotary Clubs of Pensacola named Sam Young and Tom Vaughn as the 2026 recipients of the annual Ethics in Business Award during the 24th Combined Rotary Luncheon at the Pensacola Yacht Club.
The Ethics in Business Award recognizes individuals who exemplify the concept of “service above self” and work to build a positive sense of self-worth within both the business community and the broader community as a whole. Criteria for the award include adherence to the high ethical standards of honesty, integrity, and consistency in dealing with employees, contractors and customers, while positively enhancing the economic well-being of the firm’s stakeholders and providing jobs, opportunities and profits. Young, president and CEO of Pensacola Habitat, was awarded the winner of the large business sector, or organizations with 50 or more employees. Over the course of three months, the trainees underwent an intensive curriculum that combined physical training, academic
studies, and hands-on certifications. The program covered various topics from defensive tactics and physical fitness to more specialized certifications such as CPR, first aid, and firearms.
Escambia County Corrections Commander Scott Nash highlighted the importance of preparing the next generation of officers, also recognizing the trainees' eagerness to serve the community.
“We’re proud to have these graduates join our team,” Commander Nash said. “Their training and dedication are essential to maintaining safety and order within our facilities. Our continued partnership with the George Stone Criminal Justice Training Center ensures we are building a strong, capable workforce to meet the evolving needs of Corrections.”
To further encourage qualified individuals to pursue careers in Corrections, Escambia County Corrections is offering sign-on bonuses for certified corrections officers and officer trainees. Certified Corrections Officers are eligible for an $8,000 sign-on bonus, and officer trainees who want to join the George Stone Corrections Academy and become certified are eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus, plus a paid scholarship to attend the Corrections Academy.
NAS PENSACOLA FFSC HOSTED COMMUNITY WELLNESS FAIR
The Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) held a Community Wellness Fair May 7 at the Naval Air Technical Training Center (NATTC) Charles E. Taylor Hangar.
FFSC partnered with Northwest Florida Health to host over 60 exhibits from on-base and community partner organizations, that offered health, fitness, educational tools and information about mental health services and was attended by more than 600 people.
“What we are really striving to do is to get people an understanding of what resources are available to them,” said NAS Pensacola FFSC Counseling, Advocacy and Prevention Supervisor Ericka Sam. “This event showcases the amount of people and resources available to service members and their families here at NAS Pensacola.”
In addition to health and wellness outreach, the fair included raffles, familyfriendly activities and local food trucks aimed at encouraging participation and raising awareness about available resources both on and off base.
The FFSC at NAS Pensacola, located at 151 Ellyson Ave. onboard the air station, provides information and referrals, education and one-on-one assistance to service members and their families at no cost to eligible patrons. Available programs include: Clinical Counseling; New Parent Support; Personal Financial Management; and Sexual Assault Prevention and Response, among others. Individuals can call (850) 452-5990 to schedule and appointment.
Military OneSource is also available to service members in need with resources including counseling, financial and legal consultations and referrals for mental health care. Assistance is available 24/7 by phone at (800) 342-9647 or online.
