SAND IN MY BOOTS FESTIVAL

Sand In My Boots (SIMB) is a brand-new music festival that will take over the white sandy beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama this month. This new three-day music festival was brought to life through a collaboration between country star and Grammynominee Morgan Wallen and live entertainment production company AEG Presents. Hosted May 16 to 18, the SIMB festival will take the place of the widely known Hangout Music Festival (HMF) in 2025.

Wallen, best known for his songs Last Night, Whiskey Glasses and I Had Some Help with Post Malone, has worked alongside AEG Presents to curate the festival of his dreams. AEG Presents is the same company behind HMF, as well as other popular music festivals like the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Stagecoach and Coachella Music & Arts Festival.

“Sand In My Boots is taking the place of the HMF this year. This festival was Morgan Wallen’s vision— he approached us (AEG Presents) to create his own festival, and his description matched perfectly with the beaches of Gulf Shores. Because our team has extensive experience operating in Gulf Shores through HMF, we knew we could help Morgan bring his vision to life. We have the perfect venue and team to do so, so it just made sense,” AEG Presents and SIMB Festival Producer Reeves Price said.

Despite sharing the same location and production company,

SIMB and HMF are set to be different festivals with different vibes. The SIMB entertainment lineup, festival activities and overall aesthetic will be much different than HMF.

“We made changes to many of the on-site activities, amenities and art installations to align more with Morgan and his fans’ passions. Patrons who have attended HMF in the past are sure to notice and experience a lot of new things at Sand In My Boots,” Price explained.

The festival grounds will be centered around two main stages— the SIMB Stage Presented by Boot Barn, and the Dangerous Stage Presented by Cody James. Performances will primarily take place on these two stages, apart from DJ sets taking place at the Malibu Oasis.

SIMB features a unique lineup of artists carefully curated by Wallen himself. From country, rock and hiphop to rap, indie, EDM and more, this festival lineup is stacked with a variety of notable artists spanning a wide variety of music genres.

The lineup includes a mix of well-known acts like T-Pain, Wiz Khalifa, Diplo and 3 Doors Down, as well as up-and-coming artists like Ole 60, John Morgan, Hailey Whitters and Real Estate. The festival will be headlined by popular acts including Wallen himself, as well as Post Malone, Brooks & Dunn and HARDY.

In addition to a stacked artist lineup, SIMB also offers attendees fun on-site experiences and activities. Two main sections of the festival grounds are the ‘98 Braves Park and The Midway. The ‘98 Braves

Park provides a tailgate environment that any country fan is sure to enjoy. This section will feature all of your favorite tailgate classics like games of cornhole, barbecue grills, country music and more.

The Midway brings a classic beach boardwalk vibe, including boardwalk essentials and all the best parts of your hometown fair. From shooting hoops to sipping cold brews, The Midway offers plenty of activities perfect for relaxing and hanging out with friends.

Attendees will be able to stay energized at the Monster Beach Club, enjoying music, dancing and of course, Monster Energy drinks. The popular HMF ferris wheel will also be on-site for those looking to take in the picture-perfect views of the beautiful Gulf.

“All of our on-site experiences are curated by Morgan Wallen himself, reflecting the things he loves the most while embracing the one-of-a-kind white sand beaches of Gulf Shores,” Price said.

Due to the festival’s unique location, festivalgoers can take a dip in the Gulf of Mexico to cool off. For those who prefer to keep their festival look fresh, the Sunset Salon offers men’s and women’s hair styling services including braids, space buns, beard trims and more. After getting a fresh look at the salon, attendees can head over to Love Somebody Lane to get hitched!

One of the more unique experiences at the festival will be the Up Down Cap n’ Gown Commencement Ceremony. This activity will celebrate the 2025 graduates, especially those

who skipped their graduation ceremonies to attend the festival. Grads are invited to bring their cap to the beach for a commencement ceremony and cap toss.

SIMB knows that all this fun would make anyone hungry, so food and drink options will be located throughout the festival grounds. Gulf Shores’ iconic restaurant, The Hangout, is on-site and will be open for festivalgoers to dine both inside and outside.

In addition to these dining options and activities that every ticket holder can enjoy, VIP, Super VIP and “Livin’ The Dream” ticket holders will enjoy special access to dedicated viewing areas, dipping pools, private restrooms, premium dining options and more.

“As we gear up for the event and put the finishing touches on everything, I get more and more excited for what will be an unbelievable weekend on the beach in Gulf

Shores. The excitement and anticipation from everyone involved has been contagious. From the artists and the vendors to the production team, everyone is really looking forward to this, and I know it will be a very special weekend on the Gulf Coast,” Price said.

Although tickets are completely sold out for SIMB, the festival website provides an official waitlist form for those hoping to secure passes if any become available.

To make the most of your festival experience, be sure to download the Sand In My Boots app. Available in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, the official app allows users to view the festival lineup, register wristbands, view general festival information and more. MAY 14

Escambia County invites the community to provide input on two proposed roadway concepts as part of the South Navy Boulevard Improvement Plan. This one-mile corridor, stretching from Barrancas Avenue to the Sam A. Lovelace Bridge, serves as a key gateway to NAS Pensacola and supports nearby neighborhoods and businesses.

The improvement project aims to enhance safety, mobility, and visual appeal along the corridor, including improvements in lighting, landscaping, and overall roadway design. Following a comprehensive assessment of existing conditions, the project team has developed two draft concepts and is now seeking community feedback to help guide the final direction.

Commuters and residents who live and work in this region and drive this corridor are encouraged to help shape the future of South Navy Boulevard by providing feedback through the following opportunities:

• Attend an open house meeting with the project team and share opinions in person at a public workshop Wednesday, May 14 from 5-7 p.m. at the Lexington

Terrace Community Center, located at 700 S. Old Corry Field Road. Please note: there will be no formal presentation at this event.

• Review roadway concepts and submit your feedback through an online survey at SouthNavyBlvd.com. The survey will be open from May 7 through June 3.

“We’ve been working hard on this project and now everyone has the opportunity to weigh in on how we plan to make this corridor safer, more welcoming, and more functional for all. Help us shape the future of South Navy Boulevard into a space that truly reflects the needs of our community.”

Scheduled to run through August 2025, this project will provide a framework for future improvements that will benefit military personnel, residents, and visitors alike. For more details or to get involved, please visit southnavyblvd.com.

THE CITY OF PENSACOLA JOINS

ESCAMBIA COUNTY IN OBSERVING HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS WEEK

The City of Pensacola encourages residents to take time during the week to prepare their homes and families for the upcoming hurricane season. The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season will take place between June 1-Nov. 30.

“During last year’s hurricane season, the state of Florida was impacted by two major hurricanes that left destruction and devastation in the Big Bend and South Florida regions," said Escambia County Emergency Manager Travis Tompkins. "While Escambia County was spared from these storms, it served as a reminder that all residents need to remain hurricane-ready and have a plan for their household."

Now is the time to gather supplies and prepare for a weather event.

Prepare

• Know Your Zone: Do you live in a hurricane evacuation zone? Learn your evacuation zone, familiarize yourself with routes and have an evacuation plan. Find your zone here. It is very important that you look up your evacuation zone each year to find out if and when you should evacuate, even if you have looked it up in the past, as zones can change. Most importantly, don’t rely on previous storm experience.

• Know Your Home: Is it prepared for a hurricane? Your safest place may be at home instead of a shelter. If you need to evacuate, pack an emergency supply kit. It should contain seven days of clothes, nonperishable food, pet food, water, and a battery-operated radio and flashlight with extra batteries. Also include a first-aid kit with items such as gloves, adhesive bandages and prescription medications. Find a printable disaster shopping list here. Please remember to "Get One Week Ready."

• Know Your Plan: Where can you stay if you are evacuated? Confirm plans with family and friends before the storm. Don’t forget about your pets! Plan how you will assemble your family and loved ones, and anticipate where you will go for different situations. Get together with your family and agree on the best ways to contact one another in an emergency. Inform out-of-town family and friends of your emergency plans and stay in contact. Plan your evacuation route and destination before an evacuation order is issued. Be sure to make preparations for family members who may need special accommodations, such as a wheelchair ramp, oxygen tank, or specific medications. More information on planning an evacuation for a person with disabilities or special needs is available here.

• Stay Informed: Know where to go for trusted sources of information during a hurricane event. Sign up for alerts from your local emergency management office so notifications, including evacuation orders, go directly to your phone and email. You can also enable emergency alerts on your cell phones. Monitor local news for hurricane watches and warnings in your area and follow the directions of local officials. Make sure you have a battery-operated or handcrank radio available should the power go out. Sign up for alerts from Escambia County Emergency Management and the City of Pensacola.

• Be One Week Ready: Stock up on seven days' worth of supplies, including nonperishable food, water and medicine, to last each family member for at least one week.

The National Weather Service also provided some steps to follow for Hurricane Preparedness Week:

• Determine Your Risk: Find out today what types of wind and water hazards could happen where you live, and then start preparing how to handle them.

• Develop an Evacuation Plan: The first thing you need to do is find out if you live in a hurricane evacuation zone. If you do, now is the time to begin planning where you would go and how you would get there. Be sure to account for your pets in your plan. As hurricane season approaches, listen to local officials on questions related to how you may need to adjust any evacuation plans based on the latest health and safety guidelines from the CDC and your local officials.

• Assemble Disaster Supplies: You’re going to need supplies not just to get

through the storm but for the potentially lengthy and unpleasant aftermath. Have enough non-perishable food, water and medicine to last each person in your family a minimum of three days. Electricity and water could be out for at least that long. You’ll need extra cash, a batterypowered radio and flashlights. You may need a portable crank or solar-powered USB charger for your cell phones. If you need to go to a public shelter, the CDC recommends bringing items that can help protect you and others from COVID19, such as hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol, bar or liquid soap, disinfectant wipes, and masks.

• Get an Insurance Checkup: Call your insurance company or agent and ask for an insurance check-up to make sure you have enough homeowners insurance to repair or even replace your home. Don’t forget coverage for your car or boat. Remember, standard homeowners insurance doesn’t cover flooding. Whether you’re a homeowner or renter, you’ll need a separate policy for it, and it’s available through your company, agent or the National Flood Insurance Program at floodsmart.gov. Act now, as flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period.

• Strengthen Your Home: If you plan to ride out the storm in your home, make sure it is in good repair and up to local hurricane building code specifications. Many retrofits are not as costly or timeconsuming as you may think. Have the proper plywood, steel or aluminum panels to board up the windows and doors. Remember, the garage door is the most vulnerable part of the home, so it must be able to withstand the winds.

• Help Your Neighbor: Many Americans rely on their neighbors after a disaster, but there are also many ways you can help your neighbors before a hurricane approaches. Learn about all the different actions you and your neighbors can take to prepare and recover from the hazards associated with hurricanes.

• Complete A Written Plan: The time to prepare for a hurricane is before the season begins, when you have the time and are not under pressure. If you wait until a hurricane is on your doorstep, the odds are that you will be under duress and will make the wrong decisions. Take the time now to write down your hurricane plan. Know who issues evacuation orders for your area, determine locations on where you will ride out the storm, and start to get your supplies now. Being prepared before a hurricane threatens makes you resilient to the hurricane impacts of wind and water. It will mean the difference between being a hurricane victim or a hurricane survivor.

Hurricane Safety Information

• In the event of additional heavy rainfall or flash flood warnings, residents are asked to please stay off the roadways.

• Please do not attempt to clear debris from city roadways, as street sweepers will clear debris when conditions are safe.

• Do not touch downed power lines. Call Florida Power and Light immediately at 1-800-4-OUTAGE (1-800-468-8243) to report a dangerous condition, such as a downed power line.

Pay extra attention to local weather reports. Be sure to keep your weather radio on and your cellphone charged to ensure you can receive weather alerts.

• With the possibility of high winds, it is recommended that any lightweight outside furniture or equipment be secured.

• Organizations with planned outside activities during this period need to be weather aware and take the appropriate actions.

• In the event of a Tornado Warning, move to an interior room on the lowest floor of your home or building. Stay away from windows.

• Turn around, don't drown: In the event of a roadway covered by water, do not attempt to drive over the flooded road. Water depth may be misleading, and people could end up stranded or trapped.

RETIRED NAVAL AVIATOR CELEBRATES 101ST BIRTHDAY AT NATIONAL NAVAL AVIATION MUSEUM

Retired U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Clyde “Cash” Barber celebrated his 101st birthday May 6 at the National Naval Aviation Museum (NNAM) onboard Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola.

“There’s no secret about it,” said Barber. “All you have to do is thank the dear lord for another beautiful day … that’s what has worked for me, and that can work for anybody.”

Barber, a veteran of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, has been a dedicated volunteer at the NNAM for over a decade. He said that he spends every Tuesday sharing his experiences with visitors in front of a PBY-5 Catalina aircraft—the same model he served on during World War II.

“There are very few of us left,” said Barber. “If we don’t tell our stories then there won’t be any stories to tell. I’m blessed to be able to tell my stories, and I love telling them, so it’s my pleasure to be here once a week.”

“It’s just a great day, and he is so representative of the men and women who serve this great country and have done so for 250 years,” said NNAM Director Capt. (ret.) Sterling Gilliam.

Barber enlisted in the Navy in May 1941 at the age of 17. He served as a flight engineer on Catalina patrol bombers in the Pacific theater during World War II, participating in missions from Midway to the Philippines. After the war, he continued his service and

retired in 1971 after he rose to the rank of lieutenant commander.

The birthday celebration took place on the Cabot Flight deck of the museum with family, friends and museum visitors and staff. NNAM Foundation President and Chief Executive Officer Rear Adm. (ret.) Kyle Cozad praised Barber’s commitment to service and education at the museum.

“We have the opportunity to sit and listen to the stories that only Cash Barber can tell about his experiences,” said Cozad. “Cash is an example of the most important thing about this museum, and it’s not the more than 150 beautifully restored airplanes – it’s the people behind those airplanes and the stories they have to tell.”

Located aboard historic NAS Pensacola, the National Naval Aviation Museum is one of the largest aviation museums in the world. With the mission to “select, collect, preserve and display historic artifacts related to the history of Naval Aviation,” the NNAM is open daily for visitors from 9 a.m. through 3 p.m.

NAS Pensacola, known as the “Cradle of Naval Aviation”, serves as a strategic asset in regional emergency readiness. Along with numerous aviation and cyber warfare training activities, NAS Pensacola maintains an operational airfield and deepwater port, preserving U.S. Armed Forces operational platforms.

CHRIS PATTERSON SELECTED AS MAY 2025 EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH

Escambia County is excited to recognize Chris Patterson, Library Service Technician at the Pensacola Library for West Florida Public Libraries, as the May 2025 Employee of the Month. Patterson’s selection was recognized during the May 1 BCC meeting.

“We are so proud of Chris and all his dedication to West Florida Public Libraries,” Library Director Todd Humble said. “His journey from part-time Computer Lab Assistant to full-time Library Clerk to his current role as a Library Service Technician exemplifies his exceptional work ethic and profound commitment to our mission. Each day, Chris makes a positive impact on every individual he encounters and ensures everyone who visits our libraries receives the support and guidance they deserve. His wealth of experience, knowledge, and genuine care make him an indispensable part of both the West Florida Public Libraries and our community at large.”

Patterson began his employment with the library in 2006 as a part-time employee in the computer lab. When the library transitioned from the City of Pensacola to Escambia County as West Florida Public Libraries, Patterson was

brought on as a full-time employee, moving from the computer lab to the circulation help desk at the Pensacola Library.

In his role within the circulation department, Patterson delivers exceptional customer service with a positive attitude. Whether he’s helping patrons check materials in and out, handling fines and fees, or going the extra mile to assist patrons with reserving items, Patterson approaches each task with care, thoughtfulness, and efficiency. He is extremely knowledgeable of library policies and procedures, allowing him to answer patrons’ questions with ease. Library patrons regularly request Patterson’s assistance, and he is often recognized for going above and beyond for library visitors and his coworkers.

“I would like to thank God first of all for all that He has done for me,” Patterson said. “I would also like to thank the county for the recognition. Furthermore, Mr. Humble and all the people at the Main Library for the love and support. I’d also like to give a special shout out to Ms. Susan White for hiring me many years ago. It's been a long journey—19 years and all of them have been very special. Thank you so much for believing in me."

DEAN DALRYMPLE RETIRES FROM DALRYMPLE SALLIS ARCHITECTURE

After decades of design leadership and community impact, Dean Dalrymple is stepping down from day-to-day operations at Dalrymple Sallis Architecture, the firm he co-founded with Scott Sallis and helped shape into one of Northwest Florida’s most respected architectural practices.

For 15 years, Dean Dalrymple has been a guiding force behind the firm’s commitment to thoughtful, enduring architecture. His passion for context-driven design, community engagement, and mentorship has shaped the built environment across the Gulf Coast, as well as those who have passed through the firm’s doors. Under his leadership, Dalrymple Sallis Architecture has become known for its clear vision, collaborative spirit, and timeless work.

Scott Sallis, principal and co-founder, said Dalrymple has set the stage for a culture that will endure.

“Dean’s legacy is everywhere — in the structures he helped create, in the values he instilled, and in the culture of excellence he fostered,” said Sallis. “He’s not just leaving a successful practice; he’s leaving a deeply rooted philosophy that will continue to guide us.”

PENSACOLA CELEBRATES NATIONAL BIKE MONTH

The City of Pensacola is thrilled to announce May as National Bike Month, a time to celebrate the joy and benefits of bicycling. This year’s celebration is even more special as Pensacola has recently been recognized by the League of American Bicyclists as a Bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community, acknowledging the city’s commitment to creating a more bikeable Pensacola for residents and visitors alike.

National Bike Month, celebrated annually in May since 1956, promotes the many advantages of cycling – from its positive impact on health and the environment to its role in fostering community and providing an affordable transportation option. The City of Pensacola encourages everyone, whether a seasoned cyclist or someone considering getting back in the saddle, to explore the area on two wheels.

A great starting point is one of the various bicycle clubs in our area, including the West Florida Wheelmen and Bike Pensacola. These two groups have rides planned this month.

• West Florida Wheelmen - Ride of Silence May 21 at 5:15 p.m. - Pensacola State College

As part of National Bike Month, the City of Pensacola is offering some essential tips for safe cycling:

1. Wear a Helmet: Always wear a properly fitted helmet to protect your head in case of a fall.

2. Be Visible: Wear bright or reflective clothing to make yourself more visible to motorists. Use front white and rear red lights, especially when riding at dawn, dusk, or night.

3. Follow Traffic Laws: Obey all traffic signals, signs, and lane markings. Ride with the flow of traffic, not against it.

4. Use Hand Signals: Clearly indicate your intentions to turn or stop using standard hand signals.

5. Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Pay attention to traffic, pedestrians, and road hazards. Avoid distractions like using your phone while riding.

6. Maintain Your Bike: Ensure your brakes are working correctly, tires are properly inflated, and your chain is lubricated.

7. Plan Your Route: Choose routes that are appropriate for your skill level and consider using designated bike lanes or paths when available.

Additional safety videos can be found on

The League of American Bicyclists website.

Scott Sallis will continue to lead the firm, guided by 35 years of experience in the industry. He is joined by Samantha Garrett, associate principal, whose design acumen and commitment to the firm’s mission reflect its future direction. Together, they are poised to build upon the foundation Dean helped establish, embracing innovation while honoring the firm’s deeply held principles of contextual design and clientcentered service.

“I am confident in the future of the firm under Scott and Sam’s leadership,” said Dalrymple. “They bring complementary strengths, deep experience, and a shared vision for where we are headed.”
