A TALE WORTH TELLING

As Pensacola Little Theatre (PLT) closes the chapter on its 2025-2026 season , its signature fundraising event steps back into the spotlight for its 25th anniversary.

Cabaret: Storybook Soirée turns a fresh page on PLT’s annual celebration of the arts, transforming The Clark Family Cultural Center (The Center) into an immersive literary escape.

Cabaret: Storybook Soirée will take place on March 28 at The Center located at 400 S. Jefferson St. in downtown Pensacola.

Each year, PLT transforms The Center with a new Cabaret theme, inviting guests to wander from room to room as each space unfolds like a chapter—bringing the worlds of beloved classic stories to life.

This year, PLT’s staff and volunteers are shaping the rooms of the building into a living storybook, with each featured artist taking inspiration from classic fairy tales and literary legends to craft unique experiences in every room. This literaturecentric theme is the brainchild of PLT Marketing Director Ashley Simmons.

“With the storybook soirée, every room is going to be a different literary adventure,” Simmons said.

Attendees who enter the venue will be met with a massive library, and traveling outside takes you on a dungeon tour of villains, showing well-known no-gooders like Lady Macbeth and Pennywise. There will also be a Midsummer Masquerade with a Pride and Prejudice meets Bridgerton vibe. The rooftop area will showcase Camelot -inspired themes and decor.

Kayla Stephenson, PLT’s technical director, is spearheading the construction of the rooms and set pieces, converting a stage into a giant storybook and creating a bar within a large teacup.

These performances, exhibitions and music will entertain guests beginning at 7:30 pm. Although the dress code for Cabaret is formal, this year, the team behind Cabaret encourages guests to dress in attire inspired by their favorite literary characters.

“The dress code is also one of my favorite parts because it is black tie formal, but we would love a little whimsy,” Simmons said. “So, if you

want to dress up as your favorite literary character but make it formal, that’s what we’re looking for—like a fancy Alice in Wonderland.”

This year’s Cabaret will feature a diverse range of performative art, including live bands, ballerinas, firebreathers, aerial performers, drag performers and much, much more.

“I love that we’ve integrated and spotlighted the talent that we have here for the party,” Simmons said. “We’re not just speaking about outside talent. We’re really going within and using our own volunteers. I love the yearly drag performance for the event. That always gets super fun and really artistic.”

Guests will also enjoy a variety of culinary creations, including specialty party fare served later in the evening and handcrafted macarons prepared by PLT board member and Chef Michael Gordy.

However, the festivities will not rest until the clock strikes midnight. For the first time in Cabaret history, starting at 10:30 pm, the Moonlight Madness afterparty will follow the soirée, taking the celebration to The Rooftop, the The Center’s recently

unveiled exclusive bar and event space. Here, guests can serve their moves on the dance floor to a live DJ, and they can be served craft cocktails to enjoy under a starry sky.

Drag performers will also take to The Rooftop, following up their performances downstairs with show-stopping encores. The sensational drag performances, lively energy and luxurious libations make the Moonlight Madness afterparty an unforgettable conclusion to a night of stories and celebration.

Cabaret continues to be a magnet of community, revelry and artistry through its enthralling storybook soirée theme. However, Cabaret is not only a celebration of local art and creative expression but also a crucial component to PLT’s $150,000 funding goal for its annual slates of theatrical productions, acting classes and community outreach programs.

The event also serves as the perfect opportunity to support Pensacola’s artistic community, funding future stories that PLT’s volunteers and staff seek to create.

“People need art in their life,” PLT Technical Director Kayla

Stephenson said. “It’s a great part of the community that different walks of life can come and enjoy it and be a part of who we are. That’s what Cabaret is about: experience something different and come enjoy what we are—come be a part of the family.”

Sponsorship opportunities have also returned to Cabaret. Currently, 140 sponsor tickets are available, which provide a premium Cabaret experience, including expedited entry to the event and access to the pre-party for Cabaret at The Rooftop, exclusive performances and the premium bar. For more information on sponsorship opportunities, contact Tucker O’Connor at booking@pensacolalittletheatre.com.

Tickets for Cabaret are currently available for $150 each, which provide full access to the event, including six open-bar venues, culinary art catering, live entertainment & various performances. Tickets for the Moonlight Madness afterparty are $100 each. For tickets and information, visit pensacolalittletheatre.com or call the PLT Box Office at (850) 432-2042.■

CITY RESIDENT RECEIVES NEW HOME THROUGH BLUEPRINT TO HOMEOWNERSHIP

Eli Rushing made his dream of homeownership in Downtown Pensacola a reality this week.

His new home is the first of three affordable or workforce housing opportunities to be sold through the Pensacola Habitat for Humanity Blueprint to Homeownership Program, a public-private partnership among the city, Northwest Florida Community Land Trust, Pensacola Habitat for Humanity and the Home Builders Association of West Florida. Through the program, 24-year-old Rushing experienced a day that he thought would never come.

“We were looking for something in downtown for under $300,000,” Rushing said. “We were wanting to buy a house eventually, but never thought it would happen — until we saw the sign.”

The Blueprint to Homeownership program is part of the City’s commitment to increasing access to quality housing for all residents within the city limits, making homeownership more accessible to everyone.

"Shared equity models like the partnership with the Community Land Trust allow for a more equitable and inclusive future for all income levels as we work collaboratively to create permanently affordable housing stock," said Betsy McDonald, City Housing Director. "Th Blueprint to Homeownership helps people like Eli build their lives in the city they know and love."

Homes sold through the Blueprint to Homeownership are transformed into highquality, affordable housing opportunities, enabling more families to become homeowners in Pensacola. By partnering with trusted local organizations, the City seeks to develop sustainable housing solutions that improve neighborhoods and foster community growth.

"So many different people and organizations made this happen," Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves said. "This is the first residence

that's permanently affordable in the history of the City of Pensacola."

Northwest Florida Community Land Trust, Pensacola Habitat and HBA West Florida oversee the construction and rehabilitation process, ensuring that the homes meet high standards of affordability and quality.

This project and its use of the Community Land Trust model, which ensures affordable housing by separating land ownership from structure ownership, represents another step toward addressing rising housing costs and supporting economic development in Pensacola.

“We’re always thankful to have strong civic and corporate partners who are aligned with our mission,” said Pensacola Habitat President and CEO Sam Young. “Thanks to the City and the Home Builders Association, homebuyers like Eli can afford opportunities that would have otherwise been inaccessible. This is a tremendous win for affordable housing in our community.”

In 2024, the city donated three lots to the Northwest Florida Community Land Trust to build new or rehabilitated homes at affordable price points. Currently, the home at 2300 W. Jackson St. is still available.

Jennifer Mancini, executive officer of HBA West Florida, called the project a powerful example of what can happen when institutions come together with the shared goal of helping the community.

"HBA is proud to be part of initiatives like this to help make the American Dream of homeownership more accessible in Pensacola," Mancini said. "The builder, Amir Fooladi, and all of our member donors delivered a beautiful, well-constructed home. Quality construction matters and this home reflects the care and craftsmanship every homeowner deserves. We look forward to seeing many more families benefit from this impactful program in the years ahead."

The event was made possible by the faculty, students, and friends of the Pensacola State College Visual Arts Department, First City Arts Center, local artists, businesses, and vendors that provided sponsorships and donations of art, food, beverages, and other in-kind goods and services. ADX Communications, Jewelers Trade Shop, Northwest Florida A/C, WEAR 3, and Woodmen Life were the 2026 Porcelain level sponsors.

U.S. ARMY, COLOMBIAN MILITARY LEADERS KICK OFF 22ND JOINT-SERVICE SENIOR ENLISTED ENGAGEMENT

U.S. and Colombian military leaders gathered at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida, March 16, 2026, to open the 22nd iteration of the Programa Integral para Suboficiales de Alta Jerarquía, or PISAJ.

Led by U.S. Southern Command, U.S. Army Western Hemisphere Command, and U.S. Army South, the program has been a recurring geo-strategic event since its inception in 2015.

U.S. Army South Command Sgt. Maj. Eric Olsen welcomed nearly 60 Colombian senior enlisted leaders to the bi-annual engagement.

"The next two weeks aren't just a meeting; it's a statement," Olsen said. "It says we believe, without a doubt, that our most powerful asset is a smart, empowered NCO. This is our chance to collaborate, remain open to new ideas, and build the trust that turns a handshake into a lifelong bond."

The opening day featured exchanges between joint service branches, the Colombian delegation, and other partners. U.S. Navy

Capt. Sean Newby, commander of Naval Education and Training Security Assistance Field Activity, welcomed the gathering to Florida. Colombian Technical Chief of the Joint Command of Military Forces, Jorge Jaime Rivera Peláez, the highest-ranking noncommissioned officer in the Colombian military, also addressed the assembled leaders during opening remarks.

Chief Rivera Peláez’s remarks focused on the security partnership and the importance of the two-week engagement, which includes participants from the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard, as well as their Colombian counterparts and other partner-nation forces.

Following the formal briefings and a series of group photos, the delegation conducted guided tours of the National Naval Aviation Museum. This 22nd iteration of PISAJ continues through the rest of the month, with scheduled events across military installations in Florida and Georgia.

Paper Company, Pensacola News Journal, Pensacola State College Visual Arts Department, Republic National Distributing Company, and WEAR 3 were the 2026 in-kind sponsors.

In 2018, the annual event was renamed in honor and memory of longtime supporter

Bill Clover. Clover, a Pensacola State College Visual Arts professor for 52 years, was instrumental in starting and sustaining the 19-year event that has raised money to help thousands of hungry people.

“Clover was instrumental in starting this event for Manna and continuing its success all these years. Naming the event after him is our small way of honoring Clover for his love of our community and a way of celebrating his legacy for years to come,” said Flounlacker.

About The Clover Pick A Bowl Fill A Bowl

The event was established in 2006 at Pensacola State College under the direction of Dona Usry, former Manna Guild Member and PSC Board Member; Krist Lien, District Department Head of the Visual Arts Department; Dr. Jim Martin, former PSC Vice President of Administration; and Bill Clover, Visual Arts Professor. For the first two years, the fundraiser was called Throw A Bowl, and guests were invited to make their own bowls under the guidance of the Visual Arts Department. In 2008, the fundraiser changed to two events - Pick A Bowl and Fill A Bowl – and in 2017, the two events became one, Pick A Bowl Fill A Bowl. Professor Bill Clover, his students, other faculty members, and local artists from First City Arts Center contributed thousands of hours and created thousands of bowls for the events. In 2018, after Bill Clover passed away, the event was renamed The Clover Pick A Bowl Fill A Bowl in honor and memory of his commitment to the fundraiser that combines his passion for art and his dedication to the community.

PENSACOLA NAVAL OFFICERS

RECOGNIZED FOR VOLUNTEER WORK IN THE COMMUNITY

Thirty-five student naval aviators, assigned to Naval Aviation Schools Command (NASC) received the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal (MOVSM) in a ceremony aboard Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola March 10.

Captain Ronald Rumfelt, Commander, Naval Aviation Schools Command, presented the awards on behalf of Rear Adm. Matthew Pottenburgh, commander, Naval Service Training Command (NSTC). The medals recognized the students’ contributions to Operation CHOMP (Conquer Hardships) and Own My Potential at Escambia High School.

CHOMP pairs junior officers awaiting flight instruction at NASC with students at the school for tutoring in mathematics.

“The students have demonstrated remarkable growth in both their mathematical skills and confidence,” Escambia High School Principal Dr. Dana Boddy said. “This helps them succeed in math classes and will have a lasting, positive impact on their overall academic achievement. Often, our students are so engaged and focused, when working with the volunteers, that many want to continue learning, even after the bell rings.”

Since the program began, NASC students have accumulated more than 350 volunteer service hours.

Ensign Zachary Jon Linder, a native of Des Moines, Iowa, is one of the volunteers. In addition to tutoring, he volunteered his time assisting the school’s swimming team.

“Growing up, I was lucky to have strong mentors and role models to look up to in both

school and sports,” Linder said. “The Navy not only allows me to pursue my dream of becoming a Naval Aviator, but also the opportunity to share my experiences and be that role model to the next generation.”

CYBER WARRIORS SHARPEN SKILLS DURING ANNUAL MOBEX

Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Pensacola hosted 20 Sailors from Navy Reserve Commander, U.S. 10th Fleet Cyber Protection Team (CPT) Pensacola and their active-duty counterparts during a Mobilization Exercise (MOBEX) at Corry Station, January 2026.

The two-week training evolution was designed to translate classroom instruction into operational readiness. First Class Petty Officer Hafley, CPT training team lead with NIOC Pensacola, who spearheaded development of the training and exercise, explained the guiding philosophy behind the event.

"The objective was clear: bridge the gap between training and operations," Hafley said. "By aligning every lab with specific Joint Qualification Requirements, we ensured our Sailors gained the exact technical proficiency needed to defend the network on day one."

The hands-on methodology prepared the team for the exercise's culmination: a full-spectrum, simulated real-world cyber defense scenario. The high-pressure event

TILLY AND LATTANZI CROWNED CHAMPIONS AT THE INAUGURAL WASZP ALL-STARS INVITATIONAL BOTH TAKE HOME A $5,000 CASH PRIZE

Pensacola delivered champagne conditions for the final showdown of the inaugural WASZP All-Stars Invitational. In a dramatic shift on the leaderboard, Australia’s Louis Tilly surged to the top to claim the Men’s title, while USA’s Pearl Lattanzi successfully defended her lead to secure the Women’s crown. Both athletes walk away with a $5,000 prize and the honor of being the first-ever All-Stars Invitational Champions. What is the All-Stars Invitational?

The WASZP All-Stars Invitational is an elite, invitation-only event bringing together the top-ranked WASZP sailors from around the globe. Eight men and seven womenselected purely on merit - go head-to-head in short, high-intensity sprint races. With no discards allowed, the format demands absolute consistency; every single result counts toward the final trophy.

Men’s Fleet - Tilly’s Tactical Masterclass

The final day showcased the level of the fleet. With the "Delta" flag displayed at 7 a.m., the Men’s fleet hit the water at first light to maximise a perfect weather window. Racing began at 8 a.m. sharp in a punctual, highvelocity breeze.

Spain’s Pablo Astiazaran opened the day with a statement, winning the first two races, followed by bullets from Gavin Ball (USA) and Hippolyte Gruet (FRA). However, the narrative shifted in the final hour. Louis Tilly (AUS), the reigning Asia-Pacific Champion, delivered a clinical finish by winning the last two races of the regatta. His composure under pressure allowed him to leapfrog the competition and secure the overall title and the US $5,000 top prize.

"It’s a massive game of snakes and ladders out there. In this format with no drops, it’s just all about fighting for every point. With all these good sailors, everything’s on the line and the extra cash prize just makes it so intense. You have to push hard for everything, and that was shown out on the water."

Women’s Fleet - Lattanzi Holds Firm

In the Women’s fleet, Pearl Lattanzi (USA) started exactly where she left off yesterday, taking the bullet in the first race of the morning. While the competition was fierce, with Bridget Conrad (AUS) and Grace Poole (CAN) each

claiming two race wins during the six-race session, the massive points cushion Lattanzi built on Day 1 proved insurmountable.

Lattanzi’s consistency across the twoday event earned her the inaugural title and $5,000, cementing her status as the benchmark for female foiling following her 2025 WASZP Games victory.

Lattanzi stated, "Today was a bit of a simpler racecourse because we had wind the whole time. Everyone had an equal opportunity to foil; it was just managing your lane. The laylines come up very, very quickly when it's a bit heavier like that, so a strength of mine today was picking those correct laylines and being on my targets. I think that was probably the key to success."

Champions Crowned in Pensacola

The champions will be crowned at the American Magic performance and innovation centre in Pensacola - SailGP's first long-term training base, purpose-built to support yearround performance and technical development. It's a strong connection for WASZP sailors in the All Stars Invitational, with recognition taking place at a facility dedicated to developing the sport’s next generation of talent. WASZP All-Stars: The Ultimate Showcase of Speed and Spirit

The inaugural WASZP All-Stars has been a resounding success, proving that when you combine world-class talent with a high-stakes, spectator-friendly format, the results are electric. From the 7:30 AM cold-weather starts to the 'snakes and ladders' drama of the no-drop racing, this showcased the incredible caliber and resilience of these athletes. Beyond the intense competition and the history-making prize pool, the event highlighted exactly what makes the WASZP class so special: a community that is as professional and cutting-edge as it is welcoming and fun. As the Class prepares to celebrate its 10th anniversary, the All-Stars has set a thrilling new gold standard for the future of foiling. Coming up:

The 2026 WASZP Games are coming up in Pensacola, Florida, from March 22nd to March 28th. The Swarm will race at one of the world's most sought-after foiling venues, in what’s going to be the biggest one-design foiling event in history for North America.

tested the integrated team's ability to detect, counter and neutralize sophisticated digital threats in real time.

"MOBEX January 2026 was designed to forge a single, integrated cyber defense force between active and reserve components," Cyber Protection Team Operations Chief Warrant Officer 3 Pair said. "By training side-by-side in a realistic environment, we build the muscle memory and trust required for seamless integration. This exercise proves our model is creating a ready, lethal and proficient total force."

A key outcome of the exercise was the full qualification of three Sailors in advanced cyber work roles. Completion of MOBEX January 2026 ensures the Navy has a deeper bench of cyber professionals ready to protect critical information systems and command and control infrastructure. The qualifications earned by these three Sailors further enhances CPT Pensacola’s readiness and capacity to respond effectively if activated in support of operational requirements.
