EXPLORE LOCAL JUNETEENTH CELEBRATIONS

By Chloe Cadenhead
Juneteenth, an often overlooked event in our nation’s history, is celebrated every year on June 19 to commemorate the end of slavery in America. On June 19, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas to inform enslaved African Americans that they were free. This was two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, but due to the slow spread of news and slaveowners’ reluctance to relinquish their property, many slaves across the South remained in captivity until Juneteenth. In 1866, June 19 was celebrated in Texas as Jubilee Day. Over time, the celebration spread to other states, and was declared an official Texas state holiday in 1980, but wasn’t recognized as a federal holiday until 2021. While Juneteenth celebrations can come in many forms, traditional modern Juneteenth celebrations typically consist of barbecues, music and community. Pensacola is home to multiple annual events to celebrate the liberation and culture of African Americans. We have rounded up details on some events and celebrations taking place across the city in observance of the upcoming Juneteenth holiday. 4th Annual Juneteenth Family Reunion for the Culture

SILVERHILL COUPLE WINS PENAIR CREDIT UNION FINANCIAL
PenAir Credit Union (PenAir) announced the winners of its 2024-25 NOW Program, a seven-month competition designed to help participants boost savings and reduce debt. Pete and Carolyn DiPaolo, a retired couple from Silverhill, Ala., took first place and received a $10,000 cash prize.
“We realized there were things we didn’t know and learned a lot,” said Pete DiPaolo. “We became much more financially aware of what we needed to do and how to do it.”
The NOW Program is one of the many ways PenAir Credit Union brings its purpose of Enhancing Lives to life. By pairing participants with certified financial counselors, the program provides personalized coaching, encouragement, and the tools needed to build financial confidence. The DiPaolos joined two other families—the Randolph family of Loxley, Ala., and Essie Harrington of Pensacola, Fla.— and spent seven months working alongside their PenAir coaches to reduce debt, raise credit scores, and grow their savings. With the support and guidance of their PenAir coach, J.M. Parker, the DiPaolos
increased their savings by 500% by the end of the program.
The Randolphs and Essie Harrington didn’t walk away empty-handed. The second- and third-place teams received cash prizes of $5,000 and $2,500, respectively. But for each participant, the true reward went beyond the check. It was the transformation of their financial futures.
“The NOW program is a powerful example of what can happen when you combine knowledge, support, and heart,” said Lee Morgan, President and CEO of PenAir Credit Union. “At PenAir, we’re not here to simply offer bank accounts. We are here to walk alongside our members as they reach milestones, overcome challenges, and build brighter futures. That’s what Enhancing Lives is all about.”
More information about PenAir Credit Union’s NOW Program, including details about this year’s winners, is available at penair.org/now. Submission requirements for the 2025-26 NOW competition will be announced later this month.

MAYOR REEVES JOINS SENATOR RICK SCOTT IN URGING CITIZENS TO
BE PREPARED FOR UPCOMING
HURRICANE SEASON
Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves joined Senator Rick Scott and other local leaders this week in urging everyone in our area to be prepared for the upcoming hurricane season. The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season will take place between June 1-Nov. 30.
“With the start of the hurricane season starting Sunday, now is the time for Floridians to get prepared for the season ahead of any severe weather that approaches," said Senator Scott. "Families here in the Panhandle know too well the devastation, flooding, high winds, and severe storm surge that come with severe weather - and they have seen how powerful and unpredictable hurricanes can be."
Mayor Reeves echoed Senator Scott's warning, adding, "The key to coming out of a natural disaster, like a hurricane, is being well prepared individually and for local governments to work in coordination. We have that here in Pensacola and Escambia County. We also have a great working relationship with our emergency managers in Tallahassee, so we're as confident as we can be heading into an uncertain hurricane season."
Chief Ginny Cranor of the Pensacola Fire Department also praised the collaborative spirit between agencies. "We hold regular training with our counterparts, not just in advance of hurricane season, but throughout the year. The message now is for all of us to do what needs to be done to prepare, including helping your neighbors who may not know what to do."
Now is the time to gather supplies and prepare for a weather event.
Prepare
• Know Your Zone: Do you live in a hurricane evacuation zone? Learn your evacuation zone, familiarize yourself with routes and have an evacuation plan. It is very important that you look up your evacuation zone each year to find out if and when you should evacuate, even if you have looked it up in the past, as zones can change. Most importantly, don’t rely on previous storm experience.
• Know Your Home: Is it prepared for a hurricane? Your safest place may be at home instead of a shelter. If you need to evacuate, pack an emergency supply kit. It should contain seven days of clothes, nonperishable food, pet food, water, and a battery-operated radio and flashlight with extra batteries. Also include a first-aid kit with items such as gloves, adhesive bandages and prescription medications. Please remember to "Get One Week Ready."
• Know Your Plan: Where can you stay if you are evacuated? Confirm plans with family and friends before the storm. Don’t forget about your pets! Plan how you will assemble your family and loved ones and anticipate where you will go for different situations. Get together with your family and agree on the best ways to contact one another in an emergency. Inform out-of-town family and friends of your emergency plans and stay in contact. Plan your evacuation route and destination before an evacuation order is issued. Be sure to make preparations for family members who may need special accommodations, such as a wheelchair ramp, oxygen tank, or specific medications.
• Stay Informed: Know where to go for trusted sources of information during a hurricane event. Sign up for alerts from your local emergency management office so notifications, including evacuation orders, go directly to your phone and email. You can also enable emergency alerts on your cell phones. Monitor local news for hurricane watches and warnings in your area and follow the directions of local officials. Make sure you have a battery-operated or handcrank radio available should the power go out. Sign up for alerts from Escambia County Emergency Management and the City of Pensacola.
• Be One Week Ready: Stock up on seven days' worth of supplies, including nonperishable food, water and medicine, to last each family member for at least one week.
The National Weather Service also provides some steps to follow before any storm system develops.
• Determine Your Risk: Find out today what types of wind and water hazards could happen where you live, and then start preparing how to handle them.
• Develop an Evacuation Plan: The first thing you need to do is find out if you live in a hurricane evacuation zone. If you do, now is the time to begin planning where you would go and how you would get there. Be sure to account for your pets in your plan. As hurricane season approaches, listen to local officials on questions related to how you may need to adjust any evacuation plans based on the latest health and safety guidelines from the CDC and your local officials.
• Assemble Disaster Supplies: You’re going to need supplies not just to get through the storm but for the potentially lengthy and unpleasant aftermath. Have enough non-perishable food, water and medicine to last each person in your family a minimum of three days. Electricity and water could be out for at least that long. You’ll need extra cash, a batterypowered radio and flashlights. You may need a portable crank or solar-powered USB charger for your cell phones. If you need to go to a public shelter, the CDC recommends bringing items that can help protect you and others from COVID-19, such as hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol, bar or liquid soap, disinfectant wipes, and masks.
• Get an Insurance Checkup: Call your insurance company or agent and ask for an insurance check-up to make sure you have enough homeowner’s insurance to repair or even replace your home. Don’t forget coverage for your car or boat. Remember, standard homeowners insurance doesn’t cover flooding. Whether you’re a homeowner or renter, you’ll need a separate policy for it, and it’s available through your company, agent or the National Flood Insurance Program at floodsmart.gov. Act now, as flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period.
• Strengthen Your Home: If you plan to ride out the storm in your home, make sure it is in good repair and up to local hurricane building code specifications. Many retrofits are not as costly or timeconsuming as you may think. Have the proper plywood, steel or aluminum panels to board up the windows and doors. Remember, the garage door is the most vulnerable part of the home, so it must be able to withstand the winds.
• Help Your Neighbor: Many Americans rely on their neighbors after a disaster, but there are also many ways you can help your neighbors before a hurricane approaches. Learn about all the different actions you and your neighbors can take to prepare and recover from the hazards associated with hurricanes.
○ Hurricane Safety Tips and Resources
• Complete A Written Plan: The time to prepare for a hurricane is before the season begins, when you have the time and are not under pressure. If you wait until a hurricane is on your doorstep, the odds are that you will be under duress and will make the wrong decisions. Take the time now to write down your hurricane plan. Know who issues evacuation orders for your area, determine locations on where you will ride out the storm, and start to get your supplies now. Being prepared before a hurricane threatens makes you resilient to the hurricane impacts of wind and water. It will mean the difference between being a hurricane victim or a hurricane survivor.
○ FEMA: Make a Plan
Hurricane Safety Information
• In the event of additional heavy rainfall or flash flood warnings, residents are asked to please stay off the roadways.
• Please do not attempt to clear debris from city roadways, as street sweepers will clear debris when conditions are safe. Do not touch downed power lines. Call Florida Power and Light immediately at 1-800-4-OUTAGE (1-800-468-8243) to report a dangerous condition, such as a downed power line.
• Pay extra attention to local weather reports. Be sure to keep your weather radio on and your cellphone charged to ensure you can receive weather alerts.
• With the possibility of high winds, it is recommended that any lightweight outside furniture or equipment be secured.
• Organizations with planned outside activities during this period need to be weather aware and take the appropriate actions.
• In the event of a Tornado Warning, move to an interior room on the lowest floor of your
home or building. Stay away from windows.
• Turn around, don't drown: In the event of a roadway covered by water, do not attempt to drive over the flooded road. Water depth may be misleading, and people could end up stranded or trapped.

PENSACOLA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT LAUNCHES THE HIDDEN DISABILITIES SUNFLOWER PROGRAM
Pensacola International Airport (PNS) is proud to announce the launch of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program, a global initiative designed to support travelers living with non-visible disabilities. Beginning June 2, 2025, passengers at PNS can voluntarily participate in the program by wearing a Sunflower lanyard, discreetly indicating they may need additional time, understanding or support while navigating the airport.
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program originated at London’s Gatwick Airport in 2016 and has since expanded to thousands of airports, transportation hubs, retail outlets, sports venues, and organizations worldwide. Pensacola International Airport is honored to be among the growing list of inclusive airports implementing this meaningful initiative.
“We are committed to creating a welcoming and accessible travel experience for all passengers,” said Matt Coughlin, Executive Director of Pensacola International Airport. “By adopting the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program, we’re helping to ensure travelers with non-visible conditions feel seen, supported and empowered when traveling through our airport.”
Non-visible disabilities can include conditions such as autism, chronic pain, anxiety, sight or hearing loss, and other neurological or physical challenges that aren't immediately apparent. The Sunflower lanyard serves as a subtle but recognizable symbol to airport staff, signaling that the wearer may benefit from a little extra patience, assistance, or communication.
Participating passengers can pick up a complimentary lanyard at the airport's
Information Desk beginning June 2. PNS employees and partners have been trained on how to recognize the lanyard and provide compassionate, respectful support tailored to the needs of individuals wearing it.
"We’re thrilled to see Pensacola International Airport join the global Hidden Disabilities Sunflower network,” said Paul White, CEO of Hidden Disabilities Sunflower. “By recognizing the needs of individuals with non-visible disabilities, PNS is taking a meaningful step toward inclusive travel. The Sunflower lanyard empowers people to navigate the airport with dignity and confidence, knowing that support is available when they need it.”
Hidden Disabilities Sunflower is a global program supporting individuals with nonvisible disabilities, conditions, and neurodivergence. Since its inception in the UK in 2016, the Sunflower program has expanded its reach worldwide, working with organizations across a diverse range of sectors, including retail, financial services, transportation (with over 330 airports and 22 airlines), travel and tourism, education, healthcare, emergency services, and entertainment.
As a privately held multinational company headquartered in the UK, Hidden Disabilities Sunflower operates in numerous countries, including Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Ireland, Latin America, Luxembourg, Poland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Mauritius, the UAE, the UK, and the USA.

Dr. Abo’s career has taken him all over the world, from starting a nonprofit for motorcycle ambulance service in Africa, to working as a paramedic in Ireland, to hurricane deployments in Puerto Rico and the Bahamas – just to name a few.
Dr. Abo has made a name for himself as an internationally-renowned EMS physician for his practice and engagement in EMS medical direction, disaster response, toxinology, and emergency medicine.
Now, his career in medical service is continuing in Escambia County as the new Interim Medical Director for Escambia County Public Safety, overseeing emergency medical care for all of Public Safety including Escambia County EMS, Emergency Communications, Emergency Management, Escambia County Fire Rescue, Pensacola Beach Lifeguards, and the Pensacola Fire Department.
Dr. Abo has big ideas for the future of Escambia County Public Safety, and he is already working on new initiatives to take emergency medical care to the next level in Escambia County.
Within his first month on the job, Dr. Abo has taken more than 200 complex or highrisk medical phone consultations to assist EMTs and paramedics on emergency calls, added new lifesaving medications including cyanide antidote kits, and responded to several dozen major calls, including several cardiac arrests where he was able to restore the patient’s pulse.
Dr. Abo said he’s already impressed with the leadership and staff at Escambia County Public Safety, especially their willingness to make changes for the sake of doing good –not just for the sake of making changes.
“The reception has been almost overwhelmingly amazing,” Dr. Abo said. “It’s been such a welcome from everybody, from Fire Rescue and EMS to law enforcement and the lifeguards. The excitement is palpable. And I don’t think it’s they’re excited just for me – I think they’re excited for growth, for someone who trusts them, someone to want to help them grow and expand care.”
Dr. Abo’s overall goal is always to provide “top notch care anywhere,” whether it’s responding to an emergency call at someone’s home or treating a patient while suspended from the side of a building after a disaster.
“We used to always say we want to provide ICU-level care in the emergency department, and now we're bringing ICU-level and emergency department care out to the streets, to your home,” Dr. Abo said. “I don’t call it prehospital medicine, because if we can treat you and you don’t even have to go to the hospital – even better. For a lot of calls, we are providing the same level of care as the emergency department, right there on scene.”
One major change Dr. Abo is working on is making whole blood available to EMS crews, which can be the difference between life and death when a patient experiences significant blood loss. Currently, blood products like plasma and red blood cells are more commonly used, but some counties in Florida including Broward County and Palm Beach County have now made whole blood available for patients.
Dr. Abo said it can sometimes take agencies years to implement this change, but he is aiming high and hoping to have whole blood available for Escambia County EMS by the end of the year.
“Whether it’s a medical cause or traumatic injury, the biggest killer is lack of blood,” Dr. Abo said. “It’s been proven time and time again, if you can just give them what they’re missing, that is the best thing for the patient. We’re replacing what they’ve lost immediately and giving them a better chance to make it to the trauma center.”
With years of experience in disaster response and urban search and rescue, Dr. Abo is also passionate about improving community resiliency through prevention, education and outreach. As the coordinating Medical Team Manager for FEMA’s Florida Task Force 1 Urban Search and Rescue, Dr. Abo has responded to numerous major natural disasters worldwide since 2016, seeing firsthand the importance of community resiliency.
“There is so much that happens here in Escambia County and has the potential of happening here, that I truly feel that I’m going to be able to help strengthen our resiliency,” Dr. Abo said. “Education and prevention are very important. Things are going to happen, but education can help prevent a large number, and then the outcomes won’t be as bad. I look forward to working with our team and community partners to expand what we’re doing for community health and education.”
Dr. Abo continues to remain active in the EMS community at a national and international level, including research, education, speaking engagements, consulting, committees and more, along with active field response. He has also earned numerous awards throughout his career, including EMS Provider of the Year for Heroism and Valor from the National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Foundation, Touro University’s Inaugural Alumni Lamplighter Award, and multiple citations for various rescues and disaster deployments.
"We are incredibly fortunate to have Dr. Abo's experience, passion, and wealth of knowledge here in Escambia County,” Public Safety Director Eric Gilmore said. “We have an amazing team of professionals who are passionate about providing the highest level of care to our residents, and I am confident that he will empower our team and help elevate our emergency medical care to the next level. Dr. Abo is already proving to be a valuable asset and forward-thinking leader for our team, and I am very excited to see what’s in store for the future of Escambia County Public Safety under his leadership.”

INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT LAUNCHES A LIVE SHUTTLE TRACKER TO IMPROVE THE PASSENGER EXPERIENCE
Pensacola International Airport (PNS) is making it even easier for travelers to navigate their journey with the launch of a new live shuttle tracker, now available at the website flypensacola.com/shuttle.
Whether travelers are headed to or from the terminal, they can now check the realtime location of airport parking shuttles right from their phones. The new tracking system can be accessed directly via the airport website or by scanning QR codes located at each shuttle stop throughout the parking lots. With shuttles arriving every seven minutes on average in Lots 1, 2, and 3—and on-demand service available for the Long Term Lot— passengers can better plan their travel with added clarity and peace of mind.
“Our goal is to provide a seamless, stressfree experience from the moment passengers arrive at the airport,” said Matt Coughlin, Executive Director of Pensacola International Airport. “The launch of the live shuttle tracker is part of our continued mission
to enhance the customer experience at PNS through smart, user-focused innovations.”
The shuttle tracker is part of a larger initiative to modernize and expand airport services as PNS continues to grow. With record-breaking passenger numbers and a major terminal expansion breaking ground later this year, Pensacola International Airport remains focused on delivering thoughtful, passenger-first enhancements every step of the way. By embracing innovative tools like the live shuttle tracker, the airport is reaffirming its commitment to creating a smoother, more connected, and more convenient travel experience— ensuring that even during times of growth and transformation, the needs of travelers remain at the heart of every improvement.
