DECADES OF STYLE AT PENSACOLA VINTAGE FEST

By Dawn Gresko

G

ot a thing for vintage clothing? We totally get it — denim just hasn't fit the same since the early 2000s. While there are plenty of vintage clothing shops offering retro finds year-round, nothing compares to the selection and atmosphere of Pensacola Vintage Fest, the Panhandle’s largest all-vintage clothing event. Returning for its third year on July 19 from 11 am to 5 pm at the Pensacola Interstate Fairgrounds, Pensacola Vintage Fest brings together more than 75 carefully selected vendors specializing in men's and women's vintage clothing from a variety of eras, styles and genres. Whether you're searching for a perfectly faded band tee, a classic western shirt, a pair of baggy Y2K jeans or a one-of-a-kind statement piece, there's a good chance you'll find it here. The event has quickly become a destination for vintage enthusiasts throughout the Southeast. Last year's festival welcomed more than 2,000 shoppers who browsed racks filled with highly curated vintage apparel from local dealers as well as some of the South's most respected vintage vendors. At the center of it all is Ryan Smith, owner of Obsolete Heat, founder of Pensacola Vintage Collective and organizer of Pensacola Vintage Fest. For Smith, vintage clothing isn't simply a business; it's a passion that has shaped much of his professional life. “I’ve been putting on vintage clothing events for the past six years,” Smith said. “It started to build momentum and we had vendors wanting to come to Pensacola, so I wanted to do a regional event as big as I could. I wanted to put on my own mini ThriftCon in Pensacola.” That vision has clearly resonated. Over the past few years, Pensacola has developed a reputation as a growing hub for vintage fashion, attracting both vendors and shoppers from neighboring states including Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Tennessee. The event continues

to grow in both size and recognition, drawing collectors, fashion enthusiasts and casual shoppers looking for something unique. What makes Pensacola Vintage Fest stand out is its emphasis on quality and curation. Rather than accepting every applicant, Smith carefully curates the vendor lineup to ensure shoppers have access to some of the best vintage clothing available. This year, approximately 130 vendors applied for booth space at the festival. However, only 75 were chosen to participate, allowing for a more comfortable shopping experience while preserving the festival’s high standards. “The goal for me is getting vendors who have the best stuff and are most active in the scene,” Smith said. “These people also travel around the country to other vintage clothing conventions, and that’s who I’m trying to attract to be part of this event space and spread the word.”

“The beauty of an event like this is there will literally be something for anybody's style and that's what's fun. I’ve seen 10-year-olds and then 75-yearolds shopping for clothes.” Smith's extensive involvement in the vintage clothing community gives him access to a network of trusted vendors throughout the region. Through years of attending events, organizing shows and building Pensacola Vintage Collective, he has developed relationships with many of the industry's most respected businesses. When considering new applicants, he often looks for businesses with an established reputation, a strong social media presence and evidence of active participation within the vintage community.

Although the event continues to expand, much of the planning remains a personal endeavor. While family and friends assist during the festival itself by helping with admissions and concessions, Smith handles most of the event preparation on his own. From coordinating the event layout and communicating with vendors to developing promotional materials and marketing the festival, much of the behindthe-scenes work falls to Smith. The effort is worth it when the doors open and shoppers begin exploring thousands of vintage pieces spanning multiple decades of fashion history. “The event is a vintage clothing only situation,” Smith said. “In that regard, what I’ve done is try to equally choose as many men’s and women’s options as possible from all the different eras. I really have worked hard to curate so we’ve got something for everybody.” Attendees can expect to find a wide range of styles spanning the 1950s through the Y2K era, including rockabilly fashion, western wear, 1970s denim, colorful 1980s streetwear, vintage sports apparel and early-2000s trends. The diverse selection gives both seasoned collectors and first-time vintage shoppers plenty of options to discover pieces that fit their personal style. While clothing remains the primary focus, Pensacola Vintage Fest offers a vintage experience. Easy Going Records will serve as both a vendor and DJ throughout the day, providing music and vinyl records for sale. Additionally, one vendor will offer collectibles and related items that complement the festival's retro atmosphere. Several local food and beverage trucks are expected to be on site, including favorites such as The Rican Vegan and Sauce Boss. With multiple dining options available throughout the day, shoppers can easily refuel between browsing booths. For newcomers to vintage shopping, attending the festival may spark an interest in learning how to identify authentic vintage clothing. Smith offers two simple guidelines

that can help shoppers distinguish genuine vintage pieces from modern reproductions. First, look for a sewn-in tag rather than printed information directly on the garment. Many authentic vintage pieces feature labels that were stitched into the clothing rather than screen-printed on the collar or waistband. Second, check the country of origin. While not a guarantee, many desirable vintage garments were manufactured in the United States, making a "Made in USA" tag another positive sign when evaluating an item. For those hoping to score a particularly sought-after piece, Smith recommends purchasing an early bird ticket. General admission is $11.50, while early bird admission is $16.50 and grants access one hour before the official opening time. The extra hour can make a significant difference, especially for collectors searching for rare items. Early bird admission begins at 10 am, giving shoppers first access to the festival's inventory before the

larger crowds arrive. Only 500 early bird tickets are available, and they have historically sold out prior to the event. Beyond the clothing itself, Smith believes the event's appeal lies in its ability to bring together people of all ages and styles through a shared appreciation for fashion history and individuality. “What I love is it offers you a unique opportunity to find something that you just won't be able to find anywhere else,” Smith said. “The beauty of an event like this is there will literally be something for anybody's style and that's what's fun. I’ve seen 10-year-olds and then 75-year-olds shopping for clothes.” To purchase tickets or learn more about Pensacola Vintage Fest and Pensacola Vintage Collective, visit pensacolavintage.com and check out @pensacolavintagecollective on Instagram. CITY EARNS $1 MILLION EPA GRANT TO SUPPORT WESTSIDE PROJECTS The City of Pensacola earned a $1 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that will help support two projects on Pensacola’s Westside. This is the City’s first Brownfield Multipurpose Grant from the EPA. Multipurpose Grants may be used for assessments, cleanup activities and brownfield redevelopment analysis–all activities that are key to repurposing blighted properties. The former Gibson School building and the Baptist Hospital Legacy Campus were the prioritized projects in the application. “This grant will be put to good use for our community,” said Mayor D.C. Reeves. “The application was submitted in January and to hear that we received the maximum ask in this category of grant is great news. Our team is getting to work on recommendations for the highest and best use of this award.” This grant can be used for environmental assessment and cleanup activities across both the priority sites and the Westside Community Redevelopment Area. By early September, the Community Redevelopment Agency hopes to have completed a structural assessment of the former Gibson School building on North C Street. The limited assessment by Moran Consultants given to the City in May 2025,

showed that the building, built in 1921, needed nearly $1.3 million in immediate and short-term repairs. Those repairs included the roof, windows, the fire suppression system, flooring, HVAC, doors, water/sewer and much more. A complete structural assessment is crucial to identify all deficiencies and providing a phased scope of work to bring the structure into compliance. Saving the Gibson School is important to preserving Pensacola’s past and to the ongoing revitalization efforts in West Pensacola. The Baptist Legacy Campus is undergoing a revitalization effort that is currently focused on demolition of the existing, vacant buildings on the site at West Moreno Street. Pensacola was the only Brownfield Multipurpose Grant award recipient in Region 4, which is comprised of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina and North Carolina. Region 4 received 31 awards total in this round of funding, with the others being Assessment and Cleanup grants. EPA’s Brownfields Program began in 1995 and, once these grants are awarded, will have provided over $3 billion in grant funding to assess and clean up contaminated properties and return blighted properties to productive reuse, according to the EPA.

SRCAS JOINS BISSELL PET FOUNDATION’S EMPTY THE SHELTERS ADOPTION EVENT JULY 5–26 BISSELL Pet Foundation, a national animal welfare organization dedicated to ending pet homelessness, is bringing back its signature Empty the Shelters® adoption event from July 5–26, 2026. Santa Rosa County is proud to participate in this nationwide effort, joining animal welfare organizations across the country to help more pets find loving homes. During the event, BISSELL Pet Foundation will sponsor reduced adoption fees of $70 or less for cats and dogs, making it more affordable to welcome a new pet into the family. All pets are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Summer is one of the most challenging times of year for animal shelters, as kitten and puppy season brings an influx of litters while adoptions struggle to keep pace. At the same time, shelters often see increased owner surrenders and fewer available volunteer hours, creating significant capacity and resource challenges. Empty the Shelters helps provide critical relief by encouraging adoption and creating much-needed space for pets awaiting homes. Santa Rosa County Animal Services (SRCAS) is joining the BISSELL Pet Foundation Empty the Shelters adoption event with reduced adoption fees of just $10 per cat or dog. SRCAS, 4451 Pine Forest Road in Milton, is participating from July 5-26. "Every summer, shelters face the greatest pressure of pet overpopulation," said Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation. "We are deeply committed to addressing the root causes of overcrowding through spay and neuter—but until prevention can meet the scale of the crisis, our adoption events are a lifeline for shelters and the pets in their care. We hope you'll open your heart and your home to a shelter pet this summer." “Behind every kennel door is a pet hoping for a family to call their own,” said Randy Lambert, Chief of Santa Rosa County Animal Services. “Empty the Shelters helps give these animals the fresh start they deserve while

creating much-needed space for other pets entering our care. We are grateful to BISSELL Pet Foundation for making adoption more accessible, and we encourage our community to consider opening their hearts and homes to a shelter pet. For just $5, you could gain a lifelong friend.” Empty the Shelters is the nation’s largest funded adoption event and has helped nearly 400,000 pets find homes across the U.S. and Canada since its inception in 2016. Sponsored by BISSELL Pet Foundation, the program works with hundreds of animal welfare organizations to reduce adoption fees and make pet adoption accessible to more families. All pets available through participating shelters are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. Each shelter determines its own adoption process—prospective adopters are encouraged to contact shelters directly for details. About BISSELL Pet Foundation: BISSELL Pet Foundation is a charitable 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to help reduce the number of animals in shelters through pet adoption, spay/neuter, vaccinations, microchipping and emergency support. Founded in 2011 by Cathy Bissell, BPF is an extension of her longstanding love for animals and commitment to their welfare. BPF has since partnered with more than 6,025 shelters and rescues across the U.S. and Canada to help pets find loving homes. The foundation is supported by generous donors and BISSELL Inc., where every purchase saves pets. About Santa Rosa Animal Services: Santa Rosa County Animal Services' mission is to build a society in which every animal is treated with compassion; we provide humane shelter and care for the approximately 3,500 lost, displaced and victimized animals who enter our doors every year. Our services protect animals and educate the community through outreach, intervention and enforcement.

BLUE WAHOOS ANNOUNCE NATIONAL COLLABORATION WITH 51 STEPS TO FREEDOM AHEAD OF AMERICA’S 250TH ANNIVERSARY The Pensacola Blue Wahoos are proud to announce a national collaboration with 51 Steps to Freedom, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to creating the world’s largest outdoor museum through immersive augmented reality experiences designed to deepen public understanding of America’s shared history. Centered on civic education, historical storytelling, and community engagement, 51 Steps to Freedom works to honor the stories of courage, resilience and innovation that have shaped the nation’s ongoing pursuit of liberty. Through interactive educational programming and technology-driven experiences, the organization is reimagining how Americans connect with history in the leadup to the nation’s 250th anniversary. As part of the collaboration, the Blue Wahoos will support Signing the American Promise, a year-long augmented reality initiative developed by 51 Steps to Freedom that invites Americans across the country to symbolically sign a living version of the Declaration of Independence. The immersive activation encourages participants to reaffirm the founding ideals of liberty, opportunity, civic responsibility and national unity as part of the America250 celebration. Fans attending Blue Wahoos games, as well as community events like the upcoming “Red, White and Wahoos” fireworks nights at Blue Wahoos Stadium on July 3 and 4, will be encouraged to participate in the program. In addition to the commemorative initiative, the partnership establishes an ongoing

collaboration between the Blue Wahoos and 51 Steps to Freedom’s broader educational programming, including the 51 Steps to Freedom® Trail, the 50 States One Nation initiative, augmented reality civic storytelling experiences and community-centered historical engagement efforts. Together, the organizations will work to promote civic education, historical literacy, leadership and empowerment among young women and communities nationwide. “America’s 250th anniversary is a perfect time to reflect on our shared values,” said Blue Wahoos team president Jonathan Griffith. “As we enjoy the uniquely American tradition of baseball at Blue Wahoos Stadium this summer, we think this is a great opportunity to affirm our commitment to ideals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” “We’re proud to partner with the Blue Wahoos,” said H.H. Leonards, Co-Founder of 51 Steps to Freedom. “As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, this collaboration creates new opportunities to connect people with the stories and milestones that have shaped our nation. Through experiences like Signing the American Promise, alongside the powerful historical symbolism of the tall ships gathering in New York Harbor, we’re inviting Americans to see themselves within that ongoing story and to play a role in carrying its ideals forward.” The Pensacola Blue Wahoos are the Double-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins. Founded in 2012, they have won Southern League Championships in 2017 and 2022. Their mission is to create memorable experiences.

BLUE WAHOOS SALUTE THE TRADES WITH “TRADE NIGHT” ON THURSDAY, JULY 9 The Pensacola Blue Wahoos will dedicate their Thursday, July 9 game against the Montgomery Biscuits to the skilled professionals that have built Pensacola with the first-ever “Trade Night” at Blue Wahoos Stadium. Blue Wahoos owners Quint and Rishy Studer are donating tickets to those in the trades as a symbol of their gratitude for their role in shaping Pensacola’s future. “We are very pleased to honor the men and women who build our communities,” said Quint Studer. “Houses, churches, schools and roads are all things that count on skilled tradespeople. After the ribbon cuttings, the heavy lifting is done by people working in the trades. My father was a diesel mechanic and a handyman. I would watch trains go by with my father and he would point out that he helped build the engine pulling the cars. My dad worked on many houses where we lived. To think my dad helped others live a better quality of life is inspiring. People in the trades live on even beyond their one lifetime. Rishy and I are honored to fund Trade Night. It is fitting, for these are the people that build America.” The Blue Wahoos have several activations planned for this unique night. The team will have equipment parked in front

of the stadiums for fans to interact with, all in-game promotions will be given a trades theme with participation from invited guests and the National Anthem will be performed by a tradesperson. ABC North Florida, a non-profit organization that advocates for those in the trades, will be operating the 50/50 raffle kiosk. “Trade Night is a unique opportunity to celebrate the hardworking professionals who help build and strengthen our community,” said Blue Wahoos community relations executive Jada Washington. “Every one of us has been impacted by the skilled trades in some way, and our daily lives wouldn’t be possible without their dedication and expertise. It’s an honor to be part of a night that recognizes these essential workers and hopefully inspires the next generation to explore careers in the trades.” Gates open at 5 pm CT for a 6:05 pm first pitch, with pregame ceremonies scheduled to begin around 5:40 pm. The Pensacola Blue Wahoos are the Double-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins. Founded in 2012, they have won Southern League Championships in 2017 and 2022. Their mission is to create memorable experiences.

CANINE COMPANIONS AND THE BLUE WAHOOS WELCOME NEW SPORTS PUPPY “SKIPPER” The Pensacola Blue Wahoos and Canine Companions are excited to introduce Skipper, the newest Sports Puppy to join the Blue Wahoos family and begin his journey toward becoming an expertly trained service dog. Following in the pawprints of fan-favorite Sport Puppies Watson, Bubba and Diamond, Skipper’s name was selected through a fan vote and officially joins the roster as the fourth puppy raised through the longstanding partnership between the Blue Wahoos and Canine Companions. Born on April 16, 2026, Skipper is a Golden Retriever and Labrador Retriever cross who will spend the next 18 months learning good manners, basic cues and socialization skills as he prepares for professional training with Canine Companions. Throughout his puppyhood, fans will be able to follow Skipper’s adventures at Blue Wahoos Stadium and throughout the Pensacola community as he works toward a future career helping a person with a disability. “We’re thrilled to welcome Skipper to the Blue Wahoos family,” said Blue Wahoos manager of broadcasting and media relations Erik Bremer. “Our fans have embraced every Sports Puppy we’ve introduced, and it’s been incredible to watch these dogs grow while helping raise awareness for the life-changing work of Canine Companions. We can’t wait for everyone to meet Skipper and follow his journey over the next year and a half.” Skipper will be raised by volunteer puppy raiser and WEAR Meteorologist Kathryn Daniel, who has played an integral role in the success of previous Blue Wahoos Team Puppies. Through daily training, community

outings and experiences at the ballpark, Kathryn will help prepare Skipper for his future as a service dog. “I’m so excited to welcome Skipper to our family and continue this wonderful partnership with the Blue Wahoos,” said Kathryn Daniel. “Each puppy has their own personality, and it’s always amazing to watch them grow and gain confidence as they learn new skills. The Blue Wahoos organization and its fans have been incredible supporters of Canine Companions, and I’m looking forward to sharing Skipper’s journey with the Pensacola community as he takes his first steps toward becoming a service dog.” As the newest member of the Blue Wahoos roster, Skipper will make appearances at games and community events while learning to navigate exciting environments filled with cheering fans, new sights and plenty of distractions. These experiences are an important part of his training and will help prepare him for the next phase of his journey. After completing his time with Kathryn, Skipper will advance to professional training with Canine Companions instructors, where he will continue developing the specialized skills needed to become a service dog. Stay tuned throughout the season as Skipper settles into his role as the Blue Wahoos’ newest star player and begins his journey toward making a lasting impact in someone’s life. The Pensacola Blue Wahoos are the Double-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins. Founded in 2012, they have won Southern League Championships in 2017 and 2022. Their mission is to create memorable experiences.

SANTA ROSA COUNTY ANIMAL SERVICES TO HOST COMMUNITY CAT DAYS IN JULY Santa Rosa County Animal Services will host a series of Community Cat Days throughout July, offering free spay and neuter services for eligible outdoor cats owned by no one and living in Santa Rosa County. Community Cat Days will take place on the following dates: • Thursday, July 9 (pickup Friday, July 10) • Thursday, July 16 (pickup Friday, July 17) • Thursday, July 30 (pickup Friday, July 31) All events will be held at Santa Rosa County Animal Services, 4451 Pine Forest Road in Milton. Cats must be dropped off at 8 am on the scheduled Thursday and picked up between 9 - 10 am the following day. Space is limited to 50 cats per event, first come, first served. The program is open to Santa Rosa County residents, who must provide proof of residency. Participants may bring up to three community cats per event. Eligible cats must be at least three months old, unowned, outdoor, & free-roaming. In addition to spay or neuter surgery, each cat will receive a rabies vaccination and an ear tip, a universal sign that a community cat has been sterilized. Residents are responsible for safely trapping and transporting cats to and from the shelter. Cats must be secured in a humane trap, one cat per trap, with enough room to stand comfortably. The shelter can no longer accept cats in the Havahart Easy Set Cages the handle to carry it and the handle to open it are both on top. When the trap is covered with a blanket, it is easy to grab the wrong handle, which could allow the cat to get loose. Cover the trap with a towel, blanket or sheet to reduce stress and do not trap more than 24 hours before drop off. Cats brought in carriers or traps designed for other animals

will not be accepted. Traps are available to rent from the shelter for a refundable $65 deposit, cash or check only. Since the start of 2026, more than 1,000 community cats have been spayed or neutered through the program, contributing to over 2,000 cats altered since January 2024. This milestone highlights the county’s continued commitment to reducing the outdoor cat population through humane, effective strategies. Santa Rosa County uses Trap-NeuterReturn (TNR), a widely recognized approach that involves humanely trapping cats, sterilizing and vaccinating them, and returning them to their original outdoor habitats. TNR helps prevent future litters, reduces nuisance behaviors such as fighting and spraying, improves overall cat health, and decreases the number of animals entering shelters. “Programs like Community Cat Days are making a measurable difference in our community,” said Randy Lambert, chief of Santa Rosa County Animal Services. “We’ve seen firsthand how Trap-Neuter-Return reduces overpopulation, improves the health of outdoor cats, and lessens the strain on our shelter. Continued community participation is essential to sustain this progress and meet the ongoing need.” “Community cats” are outdoor, unowned cats that may be friendly or feral. Some are cared for by residents, while others survive independently. Though they live outdoors, they are protected under state animal anticruelty laws and are commonly found in both urban and rural areas. Residents who care for community cats are encouraged to participate in future TNR events to help manage populations in a compassionate and sustainable way.

UWF RANKS NO. 2 IN FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM BOARD OF GOVERNORS’ PERFORMANCE METRICS, FIRST TO MEET EVERY ACCOUNTABILITY GOAL The University of West Florida ranked No. 2 among Florida's 12 public universities in the Florida Board of Governors' 2025-26 performance-based funding model and was the only institution in the State University System to meet all 11 accountability goals. UWF earned 92 out of 100 points, one point higher than last year, trailing only the University of South Florida. “These rankings aren't simply numbers; they represent students who persisted, graduated and achieved their goals,” said UWF President Manny Diaz Jr. “This year, UWF became the only university in Florida to meet every accountability goal we set for ourselves. That's a testament to our faculty, staff and students, and proof that when we set a vision, we deliver." Under the performance-based funding model, the Board of Governors scores each of Florida’s 12 public universities based on 10 metrics, plus an additional metric chosen by each University’s Board of Trustees, designed to incentivize university excellence and improvement. These metrics establish a minimum acceptable level of performance on issues such as graduation and retention rates. The Board of Governors also evaluates a model of normalized scores, which assumes that no changes in methodology occurred this year. Under the normalized version, UWF ranked No. 4 in the system with 93 points. UWF ranked No. 1 in Metric 1, which measures the percentage of bachelor's graduates employed or continuing their education one year after graduation. At 80.1%, UWF led the State University System in the metric for the second time in University history. The high score reflects UWF's emphasis on workforce preparation, including programs of strategic emphasis in high-demand fields such as STEM and healthcare, as well as strong student participation in internships and other high-impact practices. The University's close partnerships with employers throughout Northwest Florida also support strong post-graduation outcomes.

“UWF has emerged as one of Florida’s top-performing institutions under the state’s performance-based funding model,” said UWF Provost Dr. Jaromy Kuhl. “UWF’s strong performance shows that we’re not only attracting students—we’re helping them graduate, secure meaningful careers and create value for the state.” UWF's success extended well beyond its overall score, with the University earning top marks across measures of student outcomes and economic mobility. The University ranked No. 3 in Florida for Metric 2, which measures the median wages of bachelor's graduates employed full-time one year after graduation, with graduates earning an average salary of $54,600. UWF also posted its strongest performance ever in Metric 5, achieving a record academic progress rate of 88.9%, meaning more first-year students are returning for their second year in good academic standing. The University achieved all-time highs in Metrics 4, 9A, 9B and 10, which measure fouryear graduation rates (54.7%), graduation rates for AA transfers (64.1%) and Pell recipients (58.8%), and the percentage of graduates completing high-impact educational experiences such as internships, undergraduate research and study abroad opportunities (71%). UWF also reached its highest access rate ever in Metric 7, with 41.7% of undergraduates receiving Pell grants during the 2025-26 academic year, reflecting the University's continued commitment to expanding educational opportunity while helping students succeed once they arrive on campus. Additional strong performances include ranking No. 2 statewide in Metric 8, which measures graduate degrees awarded in areas of strategic emphasis at 67.3%, and a No. 4 ranking in Metric 6, which measures the percentage of undergraduate degrees awarded in areas of strategic emphasis at 42.8%. Together, these results demonstrate that more students are choosing UWF, persisting, graduating and launching successful careers than ever before.
