YOUTH

EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM OPENS NEW DOORS FOR LOCAL YOUTH

Escambia County recently completed another cycle of the Summer Youth Employment Program, helping over 200 local youth gain valuable on-the-job experience while working toward their future career goals.

Through the paid internship program, participating youth worked up to 30 hours per week in various county departments, learning a variety of practical job skills along with workplace etiquette such as professional dress, timeliness and respect.

“The goal of this program is to give young people an opportunity to learn the skillsets to be able to get jobs and to be employed,” District 3 Commissioner Lumon May said. “Through the Summer Youth Employment Program, we hope to expose them to opportunities and create an atmosphere where they would want to live, work and play right here in Escambia County. The sky is the limit for these bright young people, and I’m excited to see the positive impact they will make as they work toward reaching their goals.”

In addition to learning new skills through their day-to-day work duties, program participants received job readiness training and post-employment briefings, which provided them feedback about their job performance.

Youth worked in a variety of county departments this summer, including Animal Welfare, the Board of County Commissioners, Building Services, Corrections, County Administration, Development Services, Engineering, Escambia County Area Transit, Human Resources, Library Services, Natural Resources Management, Neighborhood and Human Services, Parks and Recreation, Public Safety, and Public Works.

Several interns also spent the summer working for community partners and constitutional offices, including Circuit Court Judge Miller, the City of Pensacola, Community Health Northwest Florida, Cordova Mall, the Escambia County School District, Escambia County Tax Collector’s Office, Gulf Coast Minority Chamber of Commerce, Just Ice Served LLC, and the Town of Century.

County Administration intern Alexis Jackson said her favorite part of the program was learning valuable workplace skills, along with the opportunity to assist and interact with members of the public.

“This year, I’ve learned a lot with communicating, whether it’s communicating with patrons who come in and helping them get assisted, or helping them over the phone,” said Jackson, who plans to go to college to study business. “I definitely feel like I’ve picked up some skills, and I’ve also just learned time management – being able to flow from one task to the next.”

Jackson said she’d highly recommend the program to anyone considering it for next year.

“I would say do it,” she said. “It’s a very good opportunity. There’s a lot of different fields that you can go in and try, so there’s a lot of opportunities to learn new skills and get real world experience.”

Kayla Harmon, who worked in District 3 Commissioner Lumon May's office for the second summer in a row, said the skills she learned last year helped her feel even more prepared for this year’s program. Some of her primary takeaways from her experience in the Summer Youth Employment Program are adaptability, organization, communication, and problem-solving skills, in addition to interacting with the community and getting a behind-the-scenes look at local government.

“I would say this experience has really opened my eyes to the importance of local government," said Harmon, who is currently in college and plans to attend law school in the future. “I’ve learned how local leaders get really involved with their communities and create changes.”

One success story from this year’s program is third-year intern Jayden Hudgins, who has now been hired full-time as an Animal Welfare Coordinator in the Escambia County Animal Welfare Department.

Hudgins said his favorite part about the program is the people he gets to work with every day, who have become like a second family to him.

“I feel like it’s helped me in multiple ways, like my communication skills, how to talk to people, how to address people,” Hudgins said. “Just how to be yourself and stay consistent in what you do.”

Escambia County Animal Welfare Director John Robinson said his department always enjoys having summer interns on the team, and this year was no exception.

“We’re very excited to add Jayden to our team – this is the second time we’ve hired somebody from the program,” Robinson said. “The group this year has been phenomenal, and I would hire any of them on my regular staff if they were available to work full-time. The interns are a huge help at the animal shelter during the busy summer season, and our staff is always sad to see them go when the program is over.”

Escambia County's 2025 Summer Youth Employment Program participants were recognized by District 3 Commissioner Lumon May and Neighborhood and Human Services staff for their hard work this summer during a ceremony Friday, July 18 at the Brownsville Community Center.

“I know that internship opportunities make a difference in the lives of children,” Commissioner May said. “Maybe because they made the best relationships that they could possibly make with staff, with other commissioners, they’ll get an opportunity one day to stay right here in Escambia County and make a difference in the lives of others.”

Information about future cycles of the Escambia County Youth Employment Program will be posted at MyEscambia.com/syep and on the Escambia County Facebook page.

PENSACOLA NAMED A 2025 “CITY ON THE RISE” BY LINKEDIN

Pensacola has been recognized by LinkedIn as one of the top 25 fastest-growing U.S. metropolitan areas for job growth and new talent, joining the ranks of many well-known cities and metro areas such as Austin, Kansas City, Nashville, Portland, Sacramento, and more.

The July 15 announcement highlighted affordable markets with deep talent pools that are quickly emerging as new areas for hiring and talent migration—ultimately improving and reshaping local economies.

As the final entry on the list, Pensacola is recognized for its perseverance and reinvigoration following the Pandemic,

where it saw an increase in momentum of the area's housing market and high-tech manufacturing, paired with the city's ability to blend economic opportunity with a "laidback lifestyle."

"It's an honor to see Pensacola recognized for its incredible growth and vibrant culture," Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves said.

"Pensacola is a city that's in demand, on the rise and thriving. So, it's no surprise that our great city is often ranked as one of the best in the country."

FDOT: INTERSTATE 110 RESURFACING

PROJECT TO BEGIN JULY 31 IN PENSACOLA

The Florida Department of Transportation will begin a $7.2 million resurfacing project on Interstate 110 (I-110) from I-10 to U.S. 98, in Pensacola, Thursday, July 31.

This project also includes:

• Resurfacing the I-110 ramps between the I-110/I-10 interchange and Cervantes Street (U.S. 90, Exit 2).

• Guardrail and lighting upgrades.

• Stormwater management enhancements.

• New and updated signing and pavement markings.

During construction, drivers may encounter periodic lane closures Sunday through Thursday evenings, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Additionally, there will be periodic I-110 on and off-ramp detours for the milling and paving work.

This project is scheduled for completion in early 2026.

After an early start to the nesting season, Perdido Key celebrated its first sea turtle hatch of the season Wednesday evening, July 16. 106 loggerhead hatchlings were confirmed entering the water, despite being disoriented by artificial lighting.

Nearly 60% of all turtle hatchlings will be disoriented by land-based lights, which can cause them to wander away from the water. Hatchlings that don't reach the water quickly risk dehydration, starvation and predation. Disoriented hatchlings can also stray onto busy roads, garages and swimming pools.

Permitted volunteers are trained in disoriented hatchling response and recovery, however, naturally dark beaches are the best assurance for ensuring hatchling turtles make it to the water where they belong.

Perdido Key is experiencing a nearrecord year with 12 nests, while Pensacola Beach is slightly below average at 13 nests. July remains a peak nesting month, with the bulk of hatchings expected in the months of August and September.

Every hatchling counts! Help protect nesting sea turtles and other coastal wildlife by remembering:

• Lights Out! Both hatchling and nesting turtles need dark beaches to find the water. Leave the flashlights and cell phones at home or use a red flashlight on the beach at night. Turn off beach-facing lights and close the windows and curtains to keep our beaches dark.

• Leave Only Footprints! Remove all furniture and toys from the beach when you're done for the day, including hammocks, tents, canopies, chairs, toys and sports equipment.

• If You Dig It, Fill It! Large holes, trenches, and moats create dangerous obstacles for hatchling and nesting sea turtles. Avoid digging large holes on the beach, fill in holes after digging them, and flatten sand castles when finished building them.

If you see a nest hatching or encounter hatchlings turtles on the beach, stay a respectful distance away and call Escambia County Marine Resources at 850-281-5904.

For more information about sea turtles in Escambia County, visit MyEscambia.com/ seaturtles. All sea turtle work performed by Escambia County was completed under Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission permits #032A, #202, #272, and #273.

$4.2 MILLION INVESTMENT FUELS MAJOR EXPANSION OF MANUFACTURING FACILITY

A $4.2 million expansion of an Escambia County manufacturing facility marks a significant milestone in the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation, safety, and operational excellence.

Jupiter Bach, manufacturer of covers for wind turbines, will cut the ribbon on its new facility on July 31.

The project includes an additional 20,000 square feet of manufacturing space, designed to accommodate growing customer demand and support the development of next-generation production systems. The new space features advanced crane technology and enhanced safety infrastructure to create a secure, efficient work environment.

Sean Guidry, Jupiter Bach Pensacola general manager, said his team is excited about what this means for their partners, their customers and the Pensacola-Escambia County community.

“This investment is not only a physical expansion, but a strategic one — aimed at improving our capabilities and supporting our team with the tools they need to succeed,” said Guidry.

In tandem with the expansion, the company has introduced takt time-based production systems to align manufacturing output more closely with customer demand. The lean production approach minimizes waste, enhances predictability and improves responsiveness.

Additional upgrades include the introduction of point-of-use warehousing, which positions materials and components directly where they’re needed on the production floor. This improvement reduces handling time, boosts efficiency and allows team members

to focus on delivering high-quality products with fewer interruptions.

“This is a major step forward in how we serve our customers and support our employees,” Guidry added. “We’re building a smarter, safer, and more agile operation for the future.”

Chris Platé, CEO of FloridaWest, said Jupiter Bach’s significant investment shows their commitment to Pensacola and Escambia County.

“This investment reinforces Jupiter Bach’s long-term vision: building a safer, smarter, and more responsive manufacturing environment with more capabilities,” said Platé. “We're excited about what this means for the future of our community.”

The Downtown Improvement Board (DIB) replenished its brain trust earlier this month, electing a new slate of officers and welcoming new board member Sara Papantonio.

An attorney with the law firm Levin Papantonio, she replaces former board member and restaurant owner Jean Pierre N’Dione who served the DIB for the past six years.

“It’s hard to say goodbye to ’JP,’ who has been a board member during my entire tenure as DIB executive director,” said Walker Wilson. “His insights as a downtown restaurateur and business owner have been invaluable to the DIB as we navigated through the COVID-19 crisis and more.”

Wilson adds that Papantonio "... will be a great asset to our board, especially as she is both a property owner and resident of the DIB district. We are looking forward to working with her to further our mission of making

Downtown Pensacola a great place to live, work and play."

Papantonio will be serving on a board chaired by Chris McKean, owner of the Handlebar, a well-known live music venue and lounge in the DIB district.

Vice Chair is Nathan Holler, co-owner of The Doghouse, a landmark Palafox restaurant and gathering place.

William Merrill, an executive with the Merrill Land Company, is the new board treasurer. And rounding out the new DIB board is downtown business and property owner Raf Simpson.

The board also is assisted by ex officio members Allison Patton, a Pensacola City Council member; Escambia County Commissioner Mike Kohler; and Gregg Harding, City of Pensacola Assistant Planning & Zoning Division Manager.

SUN SHINES ON STUNNING SEA

TURTLE RELEASE AFTER STORMY START AT TOPSAIL HILL PRESERVE

Destin-Fort Walton Beach, FL — What began with umbrellas and ponchos ended in cheers and sunshine as the Gulfarium CARE Center successfully released three rehabilitated loggerhead sea turtles into the Gulf on Thursday, July 17, at Topsail Hill Preserve State Park. A dedicated crowd of guests, volunteers, and sea turtle supporters braved a 30-minute summer downpour before the clouds parted just in time for the 11:00 a.m. release, creating a picture-perfect moment on the beach.

The three subadult loggerhead sea turtles—Doyle, Ripley, and Coriander— were all rescued after being accidentally hooked at local fishing piers and underwent weeks of specialized care and rehabilitation at the Gulfarium CARE Center.

Doyle, a 154-pound loggerhead rescued from Okaloosa Island Fishing Pier in early May, arrived heavily encrusted in barnacles and algae with a presumed old boat strike injury to his shell and signs of anemia. After two months of antibiotics, iron supplements, and rest, Doyle made a strong recovery and was ready to return to the Gulf.

Ripley, weighing 69 pounds, was hooked at Navarre Beach Fishing Pier in June and arrived with significant barnacle and algae coverage and moderate anemia. After receiv-

ing fluids, antibiotics, and supportive care, Ripley rebounded quickly and was cleared for release after just a month.

Coriander, the most recent intake, was rescued on July 12th at Navarre Beach Fishing Pier with a treble hook lodged deep in the esophagus. Thanks to a successful nonsurgical procedure and quick medical intervention, the 167-pound turtle was cleared to return to the wild less than a week later.

“We’re incredibly proud of our team and grateful to every single person who came out to support this release, despite the storm,” said Tabitha Siegfried, Stranding Coordinator at the Gulfarium CARE Center. “Watching those turtles return to the Gulf under clear skies was truly special.”

The Gulfarium CARE Center remains committed to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of sick and injured sea turtles along Florida’s panhandle. Community support plays a vital role in these efforts, with the average cost of rehabilitating a sea turtle totaling over $20,000.

MIND BODY & SOUL

MEDICAL HOSTS

Mind Body & Soul Medical the awardwinning aesthetic and wellness center founded by Marlee Bruno, M.M.S., PA-C, will host its highly anticipated Back-to-School Bash from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2. The philanthropic event will feature event-only pricing on popular treatments, giveaways and a community donation drive to help Pensacola students start the school year equipped for success. According to the Studer Community Institute, more than one-third of Escambia County households are struggling to afford basic needs, with the cost of school supplies rising faster than wages. Recent estimates show Florida families spend more than $890 per child on back-to-school costs, putting additional strain on low- and moderateincome households. Mind Body & Soul Medical is stepping in to help by collecting new, unused school supplies for Holm Elementary School and pledging an additional monetary donation of up to $500.

The Back to School Bash will feature special pricing on sought-after services, including neurotoxins, lip filler, cheek filler, SkinPen microneedling and chemical peels. Guests will also receive 10% off all ZO Skin Health products and can secure discounted services with a $50 booking deposit.

Every school supply donation earns an automatic entry into a raffle with prizes valued at more than $2,700, including 50 units of Xeomin tox, a syringe of filler, a deluxe Hydrafacial, a ZO Skincare kit, a Dyson hair dryer and MICC B12 injections.

“This kind of community support makes such a difference for our students,” said Shana Fetsko, assistant principal at Holm Elementary. “When students get to walk into

school with the supplies they need, they feel proud, prepared and ready to learn. It sends a message that their community believes in them and wants for them to succeed! We’re so thankful to partner with Mind Body & Soul Medical for this initiative."

Mind Body & Soul Medical is located at 630 E Government St, Pensacola, FL 32502. Guests are encouraged to bring a friend or family member to share in the experience, enjoy complimentary refreshments and help fill backpacks for local students.

Join us for a late afternoon summer stroll through downtown Pensacola as we explore the old and new ways that cities can adapt to the higher temperatures and heavier rainfall of our changing climate. Along the way we’ll look at the many features of buildings, streets, and parks that can help keep cities and their inhabitants cooler and more comfortable while using less energy.

Your tour guide is Christian Wagley of the nonprofit group Healthy Gulf. Christian spends much of his time studying the traditional ways that communities were designed and built in harmony with local climate. We’ll walk where it’s hot and where it’s not, compare temperatures in different areas of the city, and see firsthand how the design of cities shapes our energy use, comfort and stormwater management. Participants are encouraged to dress for the heat, with light

colored clothing, natural fibers like linen, hats and parasols.

Forecasts from the National Climate Assessment predict hotter summers, more rainfall and stronger hurricanes in the southern U.S. Pensacola and other cities will need to adapt to the changing conditions in order to protect their economies, public health, and quality-of-life.

The Tour begins at Martin Luther King Plaza located in the center of Palafox St— one and a half blocks north of Garden St. The Walking Tour concludes at 5:30 pm.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information please email christian@healthygulf.org or call 850-687-9968. An event Facebook page is here.
