EXPLORING NORTHWEST FLORIDA’S WILDLIFE SANCTUARIES

By Morgan Cole

cross Northwest Florida, wildlife sanctuaries and rescue organizations are offering more than just care for injured and orphaned animals, they’re creating meaningful opportunities for the community to connect with nature in hands-on, lasting ways. From sea turtles and songbirds to birds of prey, mammals and even rescued exotic animals, these organizations share a common mission: to rehabilitate wildlife whenever possible, provide lifelong care when needed and inspire a deeper understanding of the natural world. Whether through guided tours, volunteer programs, educational encounters or behind-the-scenes rescue work, each organization plays a unique role in protecting the region’s diverse ecosystems while inviting families, students and residents to become part of the effort to help conserve them for future generations. Here’s a closer look at some of the wildlife sanctuaries and rescue organizations leading the way in Northwest Florida. Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center 8740 Gulf Blvd., Navarre, FL Since opening in 2013, the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center (NBSTCC) has become a hub for conservation, education and community involvement along the Gulf Coast. Founded through grassroots community efforts, the nonprofit’s mission is to protect threatened and endangered sea turtles through research, education and hands-on conservation initiatives. “Some of the most meaningful moments happen when families learn, explore, and serve together,” NBSTCC Marine Biologist, COO and Animal Team Care Manager Alex Fox said. “At the NBCTCC, we provide opportunities for visitors to connect with nature, discover the importance of conservation, and become part of something bigger than themselves. Every educational program, volunteer hour, and family visit helps create future advocates for our coastal ecosystems.” At the heart of the center is Sweet Pea, a non-releasable green sea turtle whose story helps visitors better understand the challenges sea turtles face and the difference people can make in protecting them.

Community involvement plays a major role in the center’s success. One of its most popular initiatives is the monthly Trash Bash, a volunteer-driven beach cleanup and citizen science program held on the last Saturday of each month. Participants help remove and catalog marine debris from Navarre Beach, collecting valuable data that contributes to broader conservation efforts while helping protect sea turtles and other coastal wildlife. Since its launch in 2013, the program has removed thousands of pounds of debris from local shorelines. The center also offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for adults (ages 18 and older) interested in conservation, including animal care, outreach, special events, visitor engagement and educational programs. As a largely volunteerpowered organization, community support is essential to advancing its mission. For families, NBSTCC offers unique experiences that bring marine conservation to life. Guests can meet resident animals, explore interactive exhibits and participate in behind-the-scenes programs designed to inspire curiosity about the natural world. Popular experiences include Painting Tortoise Tracks with Safari the African spurred tortoise, where participants create a one-of-a-kind work of art alongside the center’s charismatic resident tortoise and the Honorary Animal Care Team Member program, which provides a behind-the-scenes look at caring for rescued animals. Shark School and the Shark Tooth Treasure Hunt offer additional hands-on opportunities for children to learn about marine life, conservation and the fascinating creatures that call the Gulf Coast home. Whether joining a beach cleanup, volunteering behind the scenes or spending an afternoon meeting Sweet Pea and the center’s animal ambassadors, visitors of all ages can play a role in helping give sea turtles and countless other marine species more tomorrows. The NBSTCC welcomes visitors and volunteers Tuesday through Saturday, operating from 10 am to 4 pm during its summer season (March 1 to October 31) and from 11 am to 4 pm during the winter season (November 1 to February 28). S St., Pensacola, FL For more than 40 years, the Wildlife Sanctuary of Northwest Florida (WSNF) has been giving injured and orphaned native wildlife a second chance. Since opening in 1982, the nonprofit has cared for thousands of animals, from bald eagles, hawks and owls to raccoons, opossums and squirrels. Serving as a wildlife hospital, nursery and educational facility, WSNF rehabilitates injured animals for release whenever possible while providing lifelong care for those unable to survive in the wild. The sanctuary treats nearly 4,000 wildlife patients each year, with spring and summer bringing an influx of young animals and nesting birds. If you encounter an injured or orphaned wild animal, WSNF accepts wildlife intakes seven days a week from 8 am to 5 pm and encourages residents to call ahead for guidance. Beyond its rehabilitation efforts, WSNF serves as an important educational resource for the community. The sanctuary is home to dozens of non-releasable resident animals, including bald eagles, hawks, owls, vultures and seabirds, offering visitors a chance to learn about Florida’s native wildlife and the challenges these animals face. Visitors can explore the sanctuary through free self-guided tours, with a suggested donation, offered Wednesday through Saturday from noon to 3:30 pm. Educational exhibits and signage provide an up-close look at resident animals while highlighting the importance of wildlife conservation. Group tours and educational programs are also available by appointment. Adults interested in supporting the sanctuary’s mission can take part in year-round volunteer opportunities. Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge 3051 Cloptons Cir., Navarre, FL For more than three decades, Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge (ECWR) has been giving Florida’s native wildlife a second chance. Since 1994, the Navarre-based nonprofit has provided medical care and rehabilitation for injured, orphaned and displaced animals, treating approximately 1,500 wildlife patients each year. From raccoons

and opossums to turtles, tortoises and pelicans, ECWR’s mission is simple: help animals recover and return to the wild whenever possible. That commitment extends beyond land-based wildlife. ECWR also operates a marine mammal stranding program, responding to dolphins, whales and sea turtles in need along the Gulf Coast. “At Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge family visits, hands-on educational programs and volunteer experiences inspire a lasting connection to wildlife and empower people of all ages to become stewards of our natural world,” ECWR Executive Director Pascal Robin said. While rehabilitation is at the heart of its work, education is a cornerstone of the refuge’s mission. Visitors to ECWR’s newly renovated Education Center can come face-to-face with resident ambassador animals — wildlife that cannot be released due to injury or other circumstances — and gain a deeper appreciation for the species that share our coastal ecosystems. Reptiles, birds of prey and mammals each offer a unique opportunity to learn about wildlife rehabilitation, conservation and the challenges native animals face in an everchanging environment. Open Wednesday through Saturday from 9 am to 3 pm and Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm, the Education Center invites guests of all ages to explore exhibits at their own pace while discovering the stories behind many of the refuge’s animal ambassadors. Staff and volunteers are available to answer questions and share insights, making each visit both educational and engaging. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for military members and seniors, $6 for children ages 3 to 17 and free for children under 2, with proceeds directly supporting the refuge’s wildlife-saving efforts. Those looking to make an even greater impact can volunteer in a variety of roles, including animal care, education, outreach and facility support. Through their time and dedication, volunteers help ensure that ECWR can continue rescuing wildlife, educating the public and fostering a stronger connection between the community and the natural world. Learn more at emeraldcoastwildliferefuge.org. Sandspur Wildlife Sanctuary 2990 Paso De Vivoz, Navarre, FL While many wildlife organizations focus on educational programs

and visitor experiences, Sandspur Wildlife Sanctuary (also known as Sandspur Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation) makes its impact largely behind the scenes through the rescue, treatment and rehabilitation of native Florida wildlife. Based in Navarre, the federally and state-licensed rehabilitation center specializes in caring for injured and orphaned birds of prey, including bald eagles, hawks and ospreys, while also treating smaller mammals such as raccoons and opossums. Operating from a private facility, Sandspur is equipped with advanced medical resources rarely found in smaller wildlife centers, including digital X-ray technology, in-house diagnostics, endoscopy equipment and anesthesia capabilities. These tools allow the team to provide specialized care for animals suffering from serious injuries and illnesses, with the ultimate goal of returning them to the wild. The organization is led by longtime conservationist Anna Hackney, a Florida Master Naturalist and authorized gopher tortoise agent with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Under Hackney’s leadership, Sandspur’s work extends beyond wildlife rehabilitation through partnerships with organizations such as Audubon Florida and the Panhandle Terrapin Project to monitor nesting habitats and help protect vulnerable coastal species throughout Northwest Florida. Sandspur also serves as an important resource for local residents who encounter injured or orphaned wildlife, providing guidance, rescue assistance and emergency care when needed. Although the sanctuary is not open for public tours or drop-in visits, its influence reaches far beyond its private rehabilitation facility. Much of its conservation work happens quietly, through countless hours of medical care, rehabilitation and release efforts that help preserve the wildlife that makes our region unique. Those who discover injured or orphaned wildlife are encouraged to contact Sandspur Wildlife Sanctuary or the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for guidance before attempting a rescue. To learn more about the organization’s work or ways to support its mission, visit the Sandspur Wildlife Sanctuary Facebook page.■

PENAIR CREDIT UNION HONORS ESCAMBIA COUNTY FIREFIGHTERS WITH INAUGURAL PENAIR CAPE AWARD PenAir Credit Union (PenAir) honored Lieutenant Philip Hoffman and Firefighter Dale Coulter of Escambia County Fire Rescue as the inaugural recipients of the PenAir CAPE Award during a ceremony held July 20 at Escambia County Fire Rescue Station 14. The award recognizes individuals who exemplify Courage, Authenticity, Purpose and Empathy. The award was inspired by an April rescue in which Lieutenant Hoffman and Firefighter Coulter helped a young boy caught in dangerous surf conditions. Less than 24 hours later, the firefighters were reunited with the child and his family during Superheroes Day at Studer Family Children's Hospital, a powerful moment that led to the creation of the PenAir CAPE Award. "The PenAir CAPE Award was created to recognize ordinary people who do extraordinary things for others," said Jay Wells, Vice President of Marketing and Communications for PenAir Credit Union. "Lieutenant Hoffman and Firefighter Coulter are a powerful example of the impact one act of service can have on a family and a community." The PenAir CAPE Award was established in partnership with Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation. This annual recognition will honor individuals whose actions make a lasting difference in the lives of others and inspire those around them through Courage, Authenticity, Purpose and Empathy. The collaboration reflects a shared commitment to recognizing the people and moments that inspire hope, healing and service throughout the community. "What makes this recognition so special is what it represents," said Adrienne Maygarden, President of Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation. "Our partnership with PenAir is built on a shared commitment to serving others and strengthening our community. Through initiatives like Superheroes Day and now the PenAir CAPE Award, we're able to shine a light on the individuals whose compassion, courage and service make a lasting difference in the lives of those around them."

Community Submission

The story of Hoffman and Coulter embodies exactly what the CAPE Award was created to celebrate: ordinary people doing extraordinary things when others need them most. "Our firefighters don't do this work for recognition," said Battalion Chief Steve Boothe of Escambia County Fire Rescue. "They answer the call because people need help. That's what makes this honor so meaningful. To see Lieutenant Hoffman and Firefighter Coulter recognized in this way reminds all of us that the work our crews do every day matters and has a lasting impact on the people we serve." The PenAir CAPE Award will be presented annually in partnership with Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation to recognize individuals whose Courage, Authenticity, Purpose and Empathy make a lasting difference in the lives of others and strengthen the communities they serve. For these firefighters, the most meaningful part of the experience wasn't the recognition itself, but knowing the child was safe and doing well. "We don't do this job expecting recognition," said Lieutenant Hoffman. "We're simply grateful we were able to be there when that family needed help. To see that little boy doing well and to be honored in this way is incredibly humbling.” About PenAir Credit Union Established in 1936, PenAir Credit Union has been a bold force for good, uniting community, resources and impact. With assets surpassing $2.7 billion, PenAir is dedicated to enhancing the lives of its members from Mobile, Alabama, to Tallahassee, Florida and Southwest Virginia. ON FIRST DAY OF BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT LEADERSHIP MISSION TO THE UNITED KINGDOM, GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS OPENS THE FLORIDA PAVILION AT THE 2026 FARNBOROUGH INTERNATIONAL AIRSHOW Today, on the first day of Florida’s Business Development Leadership Mission to the United Kingdom, Governor DeSantis officially opened the Florida Pavilion at the 2026 Farnborough International Airshow. The Governor also announced that Relativity Space—an aerospace manufacturing company—has committed to expanding its operations on the Space Coast, bringing substantial capital investments and creating thousands of high-skill, high-wage jobs for Floridians. The Governor also presided over the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Space Florida and the UK Space Agency (UKSA) to advance international space collaboration. This new partnership builds on an already strong relationship between the United Kingdom and Florida. “The Free State of Florida anchors the international space economy,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “Today’s announcements at the Farnborough International Airshow reinforce our position as a leader in the international space race by creating pathways for innovation, investment and opportunity.” “Relativity Space’s decision to expand their pioneering manufacturing and launch operations to the Space Coast supports Florida's position as the premier destination for innovative companies," said Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly. “Florida has fostered a competitive, business-first climate and we are proud to support Florida’s small and emerging aviation and aerospace companies as they showcase the strength and ferocity of Florida’s economy at the 2026 Farnborough International Airshow.” “It’s strategic and intentional initiatives like today’s Space Florida MOU that keep Florida at the forefront of the aviation and aerospace industry,” said Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Jared W. Perdue. “These partnerships will continue to drive future innovation and economic growth.” “From the days of early aviation to today’s space missions, Florida has played an important part in the history of manned flight,” said Secretary of State Cord Byrd. “Expanding our partnership with the United Kingdom through this MOU brings together our shared expertise, technology and pioneering spirit.” “Relativity is exactly the partner that helps advance our mission to solidify Florida as the world's hub for aerospace commerce,” said Rob Long, President and CEO, Space Florida. “This project is a win for Florida's commercial space economy and is the direct result of how our infrastructure, strategy and talent ecosys-

tem makes Florida the inevitable choice. We look forward to actively helping them grow in our state.” "Every partnership Space Florida forges strengthens our state’s position as the world's leading aerospace commerce hub. Our newly signed agreement with the UK is our first partnership under the International Aerospace Innovation Fund and gives Florida companies a direct path to international collaboration. Thank you to Governor Ron DeSantis for continuing to drive our aerospace economy forward,” said Jeanette Nuñez, Chair of the Space Florida Board of Directors. This new partnership between Space Florida and UKSA builds on the framework outlined in the 2023 Memorandum of Understanding signed by Governor DeSantis and U.K. Secretary of State for Business and Trade Kemi Badenoch. Since then, through strategic efforts, Florida and the U.K. have seen steady momentum through multiple inbound and outbound trade delegations, ongoing implementation meetings, and strong educational and commercial ties that continue to make the U.K. one of Florida’s most important economic partners. Since 2019, bilateral merchandise trade between Florida and the UK has grown by more than 20%. In 2025, total bilateral merchandise trade between Florida and the United Kingdom was more than $4.1 billion. Florida exported $1.3 billion in Florida-origin goods to the UK, and the UK exported $2.8 billion in goods to Florida. The U.K. is one of Florida's most important international economic partners. The U.K. is the state's largest international investment employer—accounting for roughly 1 in 5 international investment jobs in Florida. Florida serves as the UK's commercial gateway to Latin America, the Caribbean and the Southeastern United States. With a GDP of nearly $1.9 trillion in Q1 of 2026, Florida would be the 14th largest economy in the world if it was a country. Florida’s economy has been ranked #1 in the nation for two consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report. Florida has also been recognized as the #1 state in the nation for developing and attracting a skilled workforce by Lightcast and Florida has also ranked #1 in Higher Education for 10 consecutive years— becoming #1 in the nation for workforce education this year. Florida’s strategic infrastructure supports this economic strength, with three spaceports, 16 deepwater seaports, 21 commercial airports, 130 public-use airports and more than 20 major military installations, including three combatant commands.

PENSACOLA AIRPORT RECEIVES $6 MILLION INFRASTRUCTURE GRANT Pensacola International Airport has been awarded $6 million through the Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Infrastructure Grant (AIG) Program, funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). The award provides the critical funding needed to launch the first construction phase of the airport's Terminal Expansion & Modernization Program, marking a major milestone in one of the largest infrastructure investments in the airport's history. The grant will fund the airport's apron expansion project, a foundational phase of the Terminal Expansion & Modernization Program that will prepare the airfield to accommodate the new 5 gate concourse. The project will create the operational capacity necessary to support construction of the airport's expanded security checkpoint, new passenger concourse and additional aircraft gates while maintaining safe and efficient airside operations. This award builds on another significant federal investment announced earlier this year. In May, the Airport received a $9 million Airport Terminal Program (ATP) grant through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to fund expansion of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security checkpoint and other terminal improvements. Together, the two federal grants provide more than $15 million in funding to advance components of the Terminal Expansion & Modernization Program. While the $9 million Airport Terminal Program grant funds improvements within the terminal, the $6 million Airport Infrastructure Grant provides the critical airfield infrastructure necessary to support that expansion. "This grant is the catalyst that moves our Terminal Expansion & Modernization

Program into construction," said Matt Coughlin, the Airport’s Executive Director. "While passengers will ultimately experience a larger security checkpoint, additional gates and a transformed terminal, those improvements begin with the infrastructure that makes them possible. The apron expansion is the critical first construction phase that lays the foundation for everything that follows, and we're incredibly grateful to the FAA for investing in our future." The Airport Infrastructure Grant Program was established through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to provide dedicated federal funding for airport infrastructure projects that improve safety, capacity, sustainability, and resilience while enhancing the passenger experience. Coughlin noted appreciation to U.S. Senators Ashley Moody and Rick Scott and U.S. Rep. Jimmy Patronis for their continued support of the Airport and their advocacy for federal investments that strengthen aviation infrastructure across Northwest Florida. Patronis, who is a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, said the grant is evidence of the value of federal investment in the community. “I’m proud to see this administration deliver more than $6 million to Pensacola International Airport to expand and modernize our terminal, improve safety and support the growth of our community,” Patronis said. “Under President Trump and Secretary Duffy, Northwest Florida is winning. I will continue fighting to bring our taxpayer dollars home, strengthen our infrastructure and ensure Northwest Florida gets the investments it deserves." Construction on the apron expansion project is anticipated to begin in the next 90 days.

MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT ROYCE WILLIAMS RETURNS TO PENSACOLA TO WELCOME NAVY'S NEWEST STUDENT NAVAL AVIATORS The oldest living Medal of Honor recipient returned July 15 to the base where he earned his wings of gold, joining Naval Aviation Schools Command (NASC) to congratulate 29 student naval aviators who completed Naval Introductory Flight Evaluation (NIFE) training, the first milestone on the path to those same wings. Retired Capt. E. Royce Williams, 101, enlisted during World War II and earned his wings at Naval Air Station Pensacola in August 1945, going on to fly combat missions in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He received the Medal of Honor Feb. 24, 2026, for a 1952 solo engagement against seven Soviet MiG-15s that remained classified for more than 50 years. He is the only living Medal of Honor recipient from the Korean War. For the student naval aviators seated in front of him, the medal was not the point. The wings were. Williams earned his at the end of the same training pipeline these students have entered, and 81 years later he came back to tell them what carried him through it. "He is the living, breathing standard, the embodiment of what it means to be a United States naval aviator," said Capt. Ron Rumfelt, NASC commanding officer. "This is the history and heritage you join today." NASC, a subordinate command of Naval Education and Training Command (NETC), trains and develops future naval aviators, naval flight officers and aircrew for the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. NIFE is the entry point of that pipeline, combining aviation ground school and introductory flight

instruction to screen and prepare students before they report to primary flight training. Rumfelt told the graduates that the connection between Williams' era and theirs is the training itself. "We are the best trained aviators in the world. We do it better than anybody," Rumfelt said. "It starts with preparation. It ends with debriefs. We call that the relentless pursuit of perfection, because you do not know when that training is going to be called upon, when you will be challenged like Capt. Williams was challenged." After the ceremony, Williams took questions from the graduates. Asked what advice he would give a student naval aviator for success, he pointed to the same standard. "You have to want it. The word that comes to mind is push. Be diligent," Williams said. "Each one of you is different, but you are all trying to attain the same goal the best you can. I took every activity as a challenge." That approach, he told the students, never changed across a career that spanned three wars and ended with his retirement as a captain in 1980. "It was not a game. It was business," Williams said. "I applied myself, and the rewards were good." The graduates now report to primary flight training, where they will fly the T-6B Texan II or enter the helicopter training track on the way to their own wings. NASC is one of the learning centers of NETC, whose mission is to recruit, train and deliver those who serve our nation, taking them from street to fleet by transforming civilians into highly skilled, operational and battleready Sailors and warfighters.

NOTICE OF HEARING TO IMPOSE AND PROVIDE FOR COLLECTION OF NON-AD VALOREM ASSESSMENTS Notice is hereby given that the City Council of the City of Pensacola, Florida, will conduct a public hearing to consider reimposing Stormwater Service Assessments in the area receiving Stormwater Management Service from the City, as shown below, for the fiscal year beginning October 1, 2026 and future fiscal years. The hearing will be held at 5:30 pm on Thursday, August 13, 2026, in the City Council Chambers in City Hall, 222 West Main Street, Pensacola, Florida. The City of Pensacola adheres to the Americans with Disabilities Act and will make reasonable accommodations for access to City services, programs, and activities. Please call (850) 435-1606 (or TDD (850) 435-1666) for further information. The request must be made at least 48 hours in advance of the event in order to allow the City time to provide requested services. All affected property owners have a right to appear at the hearing and to file written objections with the City Council. All written objections to the non-ad valorem assessments must be filed with the City Council of Pensacola within twenty (20) days of this notice. Please include your name, parcel number, and the reason you object to the assessment on all written objections. Address all written objections as follows: The Finance; Objections to Non-ad Valorem Assessment; Post Office Box 12910, Pensacola, Florida 32521. Any person wishing to appeal any decision of the City Council with respect to any matter considered will need a record of the proceedings and may wish to ensure that a verbatim record of the proceedings is made. The Stormwater Service Assessments have been imposed to fund the City's cost to provide Stormwater Management Service in the area shown above. The Stormwater Service Assessments are based upon the esti-

mated amount of stormwater runoff generated by impervious surface on the property. Impervious surfaces include the rooftop, patios, driveways, parking lots and similar areas. The City has determined that the median single-family residence in the Stormwater Service Area includes 2,998 square feet of impervious surface, which is defined as the "equivalent stormwater unit value" or "ESU Value." The annual Stormwater Service Assessment rate for the upcoming Fiscal Year will be $120.49 for each Net ESU. Generally, the number of ESUs was calculated individually for each parcel of property by dividing the impervious surface area by 2,998 square feet. Credit for privately maintained Stormwater management facilities and other factors affecting the quantity or quality of Stormwater runoff has also been applied, resulting in an assignment of Net ESUs. A more specific description is set forth in the Amended and Restated Initial Stormwater Assessment Resolution adopted by the City Council on July 22, 2010. Copies of the Stormwater Services Assessment Ordinance (Ordinance No. 52-00), Amended and Restated Initial Assessment Resolution (Resolution No. 18-10), Amended and Restated Final Assessment Resolution (Resolution No. 36-10) and the updated assessment roll are available for inspection at the Office of the City Clerk, 222 West Main Street, 3rd Floor, Pensacola, Florida. The Stormwater Service Assessment, except for those imposed on government property, will be collected on the annual property ad valorem tax bill that is mailed in November by the Escambia County Tax Collector. Failure to pay the Stormwater Service Assessment will cause a tax certificate to be issued against the assessed property, which may result in a loss of title.

CAROLINE POWELL IS NAMED HEAD COACH OF THE PENSACOLA STATE COLLEGE SOFTBALL PROGRAM Caroline Powell has been named head coach of the Pensacola State College softball program following 10 years as an assistant coach for the Pirates and as the sports information director for PSC Athletics. She brings championship-level coaching experience, a proven track record of developing successful student-athletes and a wealth of institutional knowledge to her new role. Since joining the PSC staff in September 2016, Powell has been instrumental in all aspects of the softball program, including recruiting, player development, game preparation, practice planning, scouting and program administration. With her as an assistant coach, the program has produced 50 AllPanhandle Conference selections, 10 FCSAA All-State selections, two NJCAA All-America selections and a two-time FCSAA State Player of the Year. “Coach Caroline Powell has been a cornerstone of the Pensacola State College Athletics Department, playing an integral role in the success of the Pirates softball program,” said PSC Athletic Director Bryan Lewallyn. “During her tenure as an assistant coach at PSC, the program captured two Panhandle Conference Championships while producing numerous All-Panhandle Conference, All-State and All-American student-athletes,” he said. “Under the mentorship of Lyndsey Angus, she has grown into an outstanding leader, guiding and developing student-athletes on the field, in the classroom and in the community.” “I am excited to see Caroline step into the role of head softball coach at Pensacola State College. She has earned this opportunity through years of hard work, loyalty and dedication to our program,” said Lyndsey Angus, who served as the college’s head softball coach since 2015 and has become the first athletic director for the PSC Charter Academy, while continuing to serve the college as associate athletic director and academic advisor for student-athletes. “Her dedication to our student-athletes, passion for the game and commitment to Pensacola State College have left a lasting impact on our program and everyone she has worked alongside. Her leadership and influence have helped build a strong foundation for the continued success of Pirate softball,” said Angus. “She has played an important role in our accomplishments, but what stands out most is her consistency, dependability, stability and unwavering commitment. I am confident she will do an outstanding job leading Pirate softball and guiding the program forward.”

Before PSC, Powell served as an assistant coach at Highland Community College in Highland, Kan., where she contributed offensive and defensive instruction, practice planning and mental skills training that helped the Scotties capture a Region VI championship, advance to the NJCAA National Tournament and produce seven All-Region selections and a Region Player of the Year. She also served as an assistant coach at Chattanooga State Community College, where she helped guide the Tigers to a thirdplace finish at the 2015 NJCAA National Tournament. During her time with the program, Chattanooga State produced three NJCAA AllTournament Team selections and two NJCAA First Team All-Americans. A native of Semora, N.C., Powell graduated from Person High School in Roxboro, where she lettered in volleyball, basketball and softball. She began her collegiate playing career at Palm Beach Community College before transferring to Samford University, where she competed during her final two seasons and later served as a student assistant coach. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Samford and a Master of Science in Kinesiology with a concentration in Sport Psychology from the University of Tennessee, where she worked with the softball program as a graduate assistant manager. Following college, Powell went overseas to serve as a head coach in the Netherlands’ top softball league, where she led Olympia Haarlem to three playoff appearances and helped seven players earn Dutch National Team selections. She also directed social media operations for the 2014 International Softball Federation Women’s World Championship, hosted by Olympia Haarlem. “I am honored and grateful to be named head coach at Pensacola State College. After 10 years as an assistant coach, I am excited for the opportunity to lead the program that I care deeply about,” said Powell. “This new season is about developing disciplined, resilient young women who understand the value of hard work and perseverance. Our goal is to create an environment where every studentathlete is empowered to reach her full potential, both as a player and as a person.” “Caroline has experienced every stage of our softball program’s journey — from championship seasons to the challenges of the COVID era — and has remained a steady leader throughout,” said Lewallyn. “She is certainly deserving of this opportunity, and I am excited and proud for her to become the next head softball coach at Pensacola State College.”
