THE BULLS ARE BACK IN TOWN
RUNNING OF THE BULLS PENSACOLA 2026
By Dawn Gresko
G
et ready to run for your life — in the most fun way possible. The 15th Annual Running of the Bulls Pensacola returns on Saturday, July 25, bringing hundreds of runners, spectators and roller derby athletes together for a morning of friendly competition and community spirit in downtown Pensacola. Benefiting West Florida Roller Derby, the event transforms the streets surrounding Seville Quarter into a playful take on Spain's famous Festival of San Fermín. Participants will race through the course while being chased by 30 to 40 members of the West Florida Roller Derby and visiting skaters from across the region. Dressed as "bulls" in full gear, complete with horns, roller skates and inflatable bats, the derby athletes put a uniquely Pensacola spin on the centuries-old Spanish tradition. “Each helmet is designed by the skaters themselves,” Running of the Bulls Coordinator Breezie Seits said. “Some are held together with hot glue and duct type and others use bolts and screws. We have had some horns come in at over two feet across. It’s all a part of the fun when you have to duck when someone turns their head.” The result is part race, part costume party and part community celebration. Participants begin the day dressed in the event's traditional all-white attire, a nod to the clothing worn during the festival in Pamplona. Runners follow an approximately 2K course through downtown Pensacola, starting at Seville Quarter and winding along Palafox, Romana, Alcaniz and Zaragoza streets before finishing back in front of Seville. Along the route, the "bulls" charge through the crowd, delivering playful taps and encouraging plenty of laughter. Whether you're sprinting to avoid the derby skaters or simply soaking in the spec-
tacle, the event offers a memorable experience for participants of all ages and fitness levels. From elaborate group outfits to themed cheering sections, participants often embrace the event's playful atmosphere as much as the run itself. While the race itself is the main attraction, the festivities begin well before the starting horn sounds. “It’s a party from the start,” Seitz said. “There is music in the streets. Bulls getting riled up in the bull pin. Once the first whistle blows you can feel the excitement and fun flow by you.” Packet pickup will take place at Seville Quarter inside Phineas Phogg's Bar from 7:30 to 8:50 am on race morning. Participants are encouraged to arrive early to check in, grab their race materials and take photos with the derby skaters before the event begins promptly at 9 am. Once the final runners have survived the stampede, the celebration continues with an after-party and awards ceremony at Seville Quarter. The post-race celebration features complimentary beer while supplies last, live entertainment, awards and plenty of opportunities to swap stories from the course. A DJ will keep the energy high with upbeat music, while VIP guests can enjoy a mimosa bar and specialty cocktails from Matafor Vodka. Attendees can also grab a slice from Marco’s Pizza, or enjoy food from the Dirty Dragon Inn food truck. For many participants, the after-party has become just as much a tradition as the run itself. Those looking to elevate their experience can opt for the event's limited VIP package. Restricted to just 50 participants, the VIP Experience offers exclusive perks designed to make race day even more memorable. Starting at $60 per ticket, VIP guests receive premium seating, exclusive beverages plus complimentary champagne before the race while supplies last, delicious food offerings and an exclusive meet-and-
greet with the event's derby bulls. VIP participants also enjoy all the benefits included with general admission, making it the ultimate way to experience Pensacola's most unique summer event. General admission registration is $40 (plus tax + fees) and includes race entry, a commemorative event t-shirt, admission to the after-party and complimentary beer during the celebration. Organizers encourage early registration, as pricing increases closer to race day and event merchandise is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Not interested in running? There's still a way to join the fun. One of the event's most popular traditions is the Libation Station competition, which allows groups of up to 10 people to become part of the action without ever stepping onto the race course. Participants create themed refreshment stations along the route, complete with decorations, beverages and plenty of encouragement for passing runners. The cost is $200 (plus tax + fees). Each station is judged by the derby "bulls," who evaluate creativity and overall presentation. The winning station earns bragging rights and recognition during the awards ceremony following the race. The Libation Station experience has become a favorite among local businesses, friend groups and organizations looking to participate in a creative and highly visible way. It also adds another layer of entertainment for runners navigating the course. Beyond the costumes, laughter and playful chaos, Running of the Bulls serves a larger purpose. Proceeds from the event directly support West Florida Roller Derby, helping the organization continue its athletic programs, community outreach efforts and contributions to the local sports scene. Over the past 15 years, the event has grown from a quirky local fundraiser into one of Pensacola's signature summer traditions. What began as a creative adaptation of
a famous international festival has evolved into a beloved community gathering that attracts participants from across the Gulf Coast. Whether you're a seasoned runner, a roller derby fan or simply someone looking for a unique way to spend a Saturday morning, Running of the Bulls offers an experience unlike any other event in the area. So gather your friends, put on your best white outfit and prepare for a morning of dodging derby skaters and supporting a great cause. One thing is certain: standing still won't be nearly as much fun as running. Find out more and purchase tickets for Running of the Bulls Pensacola 2026 by following @bullrunpensacola on social media. FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF CHILDREN AND FAMILIES ANNOUNCES $2.3 MILLION AWARD TO TOP 10 PERFORMING OPIOID INCENTIVE PROGRAMS Today, Florida Department of Children and Families (Department) Secretary Taylor N. Hatch announced awards to the state’s 10 top performing Coordinated Opioid Recovery (CORE) Incentive Program participants for their exceptional efforts in combating opioid addiction, expanding access to care and advancing innovative approaches to addressing substance use disorders. These performance-based incentive awards included an additional award for Manatee County, the state’s top performing county, which experienced a 56 percent decrease in opioid-caused deaths in the most recent reporting period. “Thanks to Governor DeSantis’ steadfast commitment to strengthening Florida’s behavioral health system, our state is delivering real results for individuals and families,” said Florida Department of Children and Families Secretary Taylor Hatch. “The CORE Network reflects what is possible when prevention, treatment, recovery and accountability are aligned and driven by those they are intended to serve.” In March 2025, the Department established the CORE Incentive Program, a performance-based initiative designed to expand access to care, enhance collaboration and improve outcomes. The first 30 counties that had completed two full years of CORE implementation were eligible for incentives. Using a standardized evaluation process, counties were assessed across six key domains: access to care, use of best practices, peer involvement, community partnerships, community engagement and innovation. A total of $2 million will be awarded to the 10 highest-performing counties, with each county receiving funding in recognition of their performance. Manatee County, recognized as the Best Performing County, will receive an additional $300,000 for achiev-
ing the greatest percentage reduction in opioid-caused deaths per 100,000 population, with a 56 percent decrease from 2023 to 2024, according to the Florida Medical Examiners Commission Annual Report.. Counties receiving awards include: • Bay ($200,000) • Broward ($200,000) • Clay ($200,000) • Duval ($200,000) • Escambia ($200,000) • Gulf ($200,000) • Hernando ($200,000) • Manatee ($500,000) • Miami-Dade ($200,000) • Okaloosa ($200,000) Since its launch in 2022, the CORE Network has served as a countywide, coordinated system that unites emergency medical services, hospitals, long-term treatment providers and law enforcement to deliver a comprehensive and aligned response, as well as strengthen existing services for individuals with substance use disorders. In Fiscal Year 2024-2025, the CORE Network produced measurable results, with more than 22,950 individuals with opioid use disorder receiving medication-assisted treatment (MAT), representing a 70 percent engagement rate, well above the national benchmark of 18 percent. MAT was also initiated across multiple access points, including more than 7,480 through CORE Network treatment providers and more than 15,470 through emergency medical services, emergency departments and other care pathways. In Fiscal Year 2025-2026, the CORE Network expanded statewide to all 67 counties, allowing for continued growth in its services. A recent earlier addition of law enforcement to the CORE Network is creating new early intervention opportunities for individuals who may not seek help on their own.

SANTA ROSA COUNTY LAUNCHES MYSANTAROSAFL APP TO CONNECT RESIDENTS WITH COUNTY SERVICES Santa Rosa County residents now have a new way to stay connected and report issues in their community with the launch of the MySantaRosaFL mobile app. The new app includes SeeClickFix, a service request tool that allows residents to quickly report issues such as potholes, damaged traffic signs, drainage concerns, high grass and weeds and other maintenance needs. Residents can submit requests directly from their phone by using the "New Request" button at the bottom of the app and track the status of their reports. If an issue has already been reported, the system will notify users so they can follow the existing request instead of creating a duplicate.
In addition to reporting concerns, the MySantaRosaFL app serves as a one-stop location for county information. Residents can access road and bridge closure updates, animal services information, county meeting agendas, community events and other helpful county resources. "We wanted to make it easier for people to get information and let us know when something needs attention," said County Administrator Brad Baker. "Whether you're reporting a pothole, checking on a road closure, or looking for county information, this app gives residents a quick and easy way to connect with us." The MySantaRosaFL app is available for free download on iOS and Android devices.
AGRICULTURAL LEGACY LANDS PROTECTION PROGRAM KICKS OFF INAUGURAL YEAR IN SANTA ROSA COUNTY CONSERVATION The Santa Rosa County Agricultural Legacy Lands Protection Program is open to applicants starting July 1 through July 31 for the fiscal year 2026/27, marking the start of a conservation initiative aimed at preserving the land, culture and industry of some of the county's most precious land. The program's purpose is to permanently protect agricultural, timber, ranch and open-space lands through voluntary conservation easements that limit future development while keeping properties privately owned and actively managed for allowable uses (farming, ranching, timber, hunting, conservation).
"This is an exciting step in the long-term vision of our county preserving our agricultural industry," District 3 Commissioner Rhett Rowell said. "The Legacy Lands Protection Program will preserve farmland in perpetuity for our future generations. Food security is national security." Program Core Principles: • Voluntary participation; landowner retains ownership and management. • Perpetual deed restrictions (easements cannot be reversed). • Growth guided toward targeted urbanized areas (program helps slow urban sprawl, not stop all building).
DUNWOODY PARK PLAYGROUND IS GETTING A FACELFIT AND NEEDS YOUR INPUT A long-planned refresh of the playground equipment at Dunwoody Park in Cordova Park is getting close and there is a unique option for public input coming this Friday, July 3. The park is getting new Western themed play equipment that harkens back to its “Cowboy Park” roots. The $200,000 project is part of the City of Pensacola’s $21.7 million Direction 25 investment in parks and public spaces and is funded in part with Local Option Sales Tax revenue. The Parks and Recreation Department is planning a community input session at 5:30 p.m. July 3 at the park. The input session is tied to the neighborhood’s annual July 4th bike parade celebration at the park. The Parks and Recreation team will be on hand with mockups of options for play equipment designs. Other public input opportunities are available through the QR code below and at displays at City and YMCA summer camps at Gull Point and Vickery Center.
About the Designs: • The first design is an Old Western Movie theme with wood-tone panels and colorful slides, ramps and metal components, as well as a rocking horse, dual rocker and spinner, creating a nostalgic vibe. The main play structure features two deputies guarding the General Store at the entrance to the large play structure and a large 3D panel Sherrif on the inside ramp railing leading to each of the slides and other play components. • The second design is a Modern Cowboy Rodeo theme that hearkens back to the 1980’s movie “Urban Cowboy” with a bright color scheme. The general store motif is still a main feature with a male and female deputy at guard. To the right of the playground will be the spinner and dual rocker featuring bulls opposing horses. Voting on the new design will close on July 10.

UWF UNVEILS REFRESHED BRAND IDENTITY The University of West Florida has unveiled a refreshed brand identity, including a new primary logo and updated visual system, designed to better reflect the University’s growth and forward momentum. The brand refresh comes at a transformative time for UWF as it reaches record enrollment, expands research with an R2 designation, strengthens its regional impact and begins the transition into NCAA Division I athletics. The updated identity provides a more unified and contemporary representation of UWF while honoring the traditions and heritage that have shaped the institution. “As our University continues to grow and reach new milestones, it is important that our identity reflects who we are today while honoring the legacy that brought us here,” said UWF President Manny Diaz Jr. “This refreshed brand positions us to more clearly tell the UWF story and communicate the impact we have on our students, our region and beyond.” The brand refresh was informed by a comprehensive brand audit conducted by The Moore Agency, which included stakeholder interviews, focus groups and an evaluation of UWF's visual identity. The research provided insight into how the University is perceived by prospective and current students, alumni, partners and the broader community, and it identified opportunities to strengthen consistency and recognition across audiences. The new primary logo builds upon the University’s existing athletic lettermark and features a stylized UWF monogram in the institution's updated navy and green color palette. The design creates stronger alignment between academic and athletic branding while providing a distinctive and recognizable identity for UWF.
As part of the refresh, UWF's primary blue and green colors have been updated to Argo Navy and Argo Green. The revised color palette creates a more consistent and cohesive visual identity across the University, while improving accessibility and flexibility across digital, print and environmental applications. The updated primary colors also establish a stronger and more distinctive presence that reflects the University’s growing reputation and institutional prestige. For nearly 60 years, the Nautilus Shell has served as a defining symbol of UWF, representing progress and the University's connection to place. While the shell is no longer featured in the primary institutional logo, it remains an important part of UWF's identity and heritage and will continue to be represented through the academic seal and other institutional brand elements. “This consolidation of our visual brand comes at a pivotal time as we are on the cusp of so many highly visible endeavors,” said UWF Creative Director Jennifer Peck. “All of our heritage brand icons remain part of our story, but they have evolved and reorganized to help propel us into our next chapter.” In addition to the visual identity update, UWF has refined its brand messaging framework to ensure greater consistency across communications, marketing and recruitment efforts. The updated brand strategy emphasizes student success, regional impact, innovation and opportunity, and it frames UWF as a place that is bold, authentic, accessible, determined and always advancing. “All of these updates reflect an important step forward for UWF,” Diaz said. “While our visual identity is evolving, our mission and our commitment to our students, faculty, staff and community remain unchanged.”
PENSACOLA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AWARDED $425,000 BUILD GRANT FOR TERMINAL ROADWAY PLANNING STUDY Pensacola International Airport has been awarded a $425,000 Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to fund a comprehensive planning study focused on the reconfiguration and expansion of the airport’s existing curbfront and roadway system. Pensacola International Airport has experienced unprecedented growth over the last decade, with passenger activity increasing by more than 100 percent. As the airport continues to modernize and expand, the roadway network serving the terminal has faced increasing pressure, particularly during peak travel periods. The BUILD-funded planning study will help identify long-term solutions to improve safety, traffic flow and operational efficiency throughout the airport’s roadway and curbfront system while preparing the airport for future growth. The study will include preliminary 30 percent design work focused on improvements to terminal access roads, passenger pick-up and drop-off areas, parking access, rental car circulation, outbound traffic flow and broader multimodal connectivity. “As a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, I’m proud to help secure $425,000 for improvements to Airport Boulevard,” Congressman Jimmy Patronis said. “I want to thank Secretary Duffy and President Trump for recognizing the tremendous growth we’re seeing across the Panhandle and for helping move this project forward. This investment will improve the travel experience today while ensuring Pensacola International Airport is ready to meet the demands of Northwest Florida’s tomorrow.” City leaders say the study will play an important role in supporting both the
airport’s continued growth and the region’s long-term transportation needs. “Our airport’s growth is a success story for our city and the region, and our terminal roadway infrastructure needs to keep up so that we can keep providing the service our residents and visitors deserve,” Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves said. “We are so grateful to receive this BUILD Grant to help support the study needed to give us a blueprint to keep our airport humming.” Airport officials say the study will help establish the framework for future roadway and curbfront improvements tied to the airport’s ongoing Terminal Expansion and Modernization Program. “This grant is an important investment in the future of Pensacola International Airport and the Northwest Florida region,” Executive Director of Pensacola International Airport Matt Coughlin said. “As passenger traffic continues to grow and our Terminal Expansion and Modernization Program moves forward, it is critical that we proactively plan for a safer, more efficient and more intuitive roadway system that improves the experience for travelers and strengthens regional mobility.” The City of Pensacola and Pensacola International Airport also extend sincere appreciation to Senator Ashley Moody for her support of the project and for providing a letter of support during the BUILD grant application process. The planning study will serve as a foundational step in supporting the airport’s continued growth and long-term transportation needs while helping ensure Pensacola International Airport remains a safe, efficient and welcoming gateway to Northwest Florida for years to come.
BUSINESS TAX LICENSE PLATFORM CHANGING THIS MONTH Renewing a Business Tax License will get easier with the transition to a new tool beginning this month. Development Services will move these renewals to the MyGovernmentOnline platform. The change will automate some of the rote paperwork involved in renewals and new applications, allowing staff to do more customer interaction and better analysis of renewals, delinquencies and the like. Business Tax Licenses generate just under $1 million in revenue annually in the city. Staff are preparing 6,018 annual renewal notices to be mailed out. Renewals are due Oct. 1.
All business owners need a Business Tax License to operate in the city limits. The licenses are used to verify compliance to building codes, fire codes and zoning regulations; and track the number and kinds of businesses operating in the City. Development Services Director Sherry Morris said the new system will also allow better description of business types and make renewals more seamless. Renewals can still be done in person during office hours in Development Services on the fifth floor of City Hall, 222 W. Main St., Pensacola.
