he calendar isn’t lying: It’s 2026 already. The time for making new year’s resolutions is well upon us, and there’s always room to add a few goals that focus on improving body and mind to the list. What better way to boost mental and physical health than to go back to the basics of good exercise and camaraderie by playing fun sports and being social? Our area’s adult sports scene offers everything from pickleball and tennis to cornhole and disc golf, where you’re guaranteed to find a group of likeminded people with whom to enjoy a great game. Whether you’ve got a competitive edge geared for leagues or you're just looking for casual oneoff games, get in the sporty spirit by joining any of the groups listed below and jump start the new year with the upbeat energy and convivial vibes to carry you through to the end of 2026. From kickball and cornhole to bowling, here are some organized adult sports groups across Gulf Breeze and Pensacola that offer plenty of ways to get in the game. Kaboom! Sports, bar crawls and festive events? Say less! Joining a Kaboom league means more than just playing sports: There’s a unique sense of community and friendship built between fellow players on and off the field. When Kaboom isn’t running co-ed leagues ranging from experienced players to beginners in kickball, volleyball, cornhole and bowling, members 21+ are gathering for jovial Thanksgiving, Christmas and even Mardi Gras themed bar crawls in downtown Pensacola, taking participants through favorite watering holes like Intermission, O’Riley’s Irish

Pub and Odd Colony Brewing Co. Outside of games there’s more than just bar crawls, as Kaboom stages lively events at games with music and raffles for free leagues. Kickball games often take place at Lion’s Park in downtown Pensacola, while cornhole games have been hosted at venues like Coastal County Brewing and Wild Gregg’s Saloon. Prices vary according to what league you’re entering, like cornhole or kickball, and whether you register as an individual or team. Kaboom’s leagues run seasonally for eight weeks at a time. For those who may not want to commit to a full two months, Kaboom sometimes offers special miniseasons: four weeks of play for only $40, but keep an eye on their Facebook page for updates. Pick up games are also listed on Kaboom’s Facebook page. For more on registration fees or to learn about Kaboom’s upcoming events, check out kaboomssc.com. “We're just such a fun bubble of people who are very welcoming and we’re always looking for more to join,” Aleacia Miller, Director of All Things Fun at Kaboom said. City of Gulf Breeze From tennis and basketball to horseshoes and disc golf, City of Gulf Breeze’s facilities at Shoreline Park provide the chance for casual players and sports enthusiasts alike to sharpen their skills or enjoy friendly competition. You can serve up a good game of tennis with a group of friends on a pristine court Monday through Friday, just be sure to call ahead to reserve the space with a fee of only $2 per hour for residents of Gulf Breeze. Or, join a pick up game of men’s basketball on Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday from 6 to 8 am. Basketball games are played at the Gulf Breeze Community Center using the honors

system and players rotate through to take turns, just be sure to bring your own ball. Available seven days a week from sunrise to sunset, the horseshoe league gathers for a classic lawn game experience where two players toss horseshoes (now more modern, stylized U-shaped bars) at metal stakes set 40 feet apart. This simple yet skillful sport is perfect for those looking for a little leisurely outdoor competition in a relaxed setting. Also open daily from dawn until dusk is the 18-hole disc golf course at Shoreline North with holes 11-18 designed for quicker rounds or newer players by minimizing challenging water hazards and dense tree coverage. However, if you take on the full course then you'll find some unique opportunities to shoot for island targets only accessible by bridge—combining fun, challenge and our area's natural beauty. All-In-Sports Give a warm welcome to Pensacola’s newest sport and social group: Allin-Sports Club. Although they have the traditional favorite of kickball, what sets this club apart is the inclusion of ultimate frisbee and sprinting, both of which have leagues coming in the spring of 2026. For kickball, there’s a social division for laid-back games or a competitive division for those wanting to chase the winning title. Individuals (also called free agents) and already formed teams are welcome to join leagues. Leagues run a ten-week season with a championship finale as well as a bonus draft league tournament, and most games are set up at NEP Park on E. 9 Mile Rd. Kickball league registration

runs about $67.15 per person. For those who prefer a more fast-paced, high-energy team sport that blends the best of soccer and football there’s ultimate frisbee. Whether you're diving for catches or making epic passes, ultimate frisbee is guaranteed to offer friendly competition and a whole lot of laughs. If running is more your speed, the sprint club focuses on weekly training sessions designed to boost power and technique with a season ending in a lively, rapid race series to show off your progress. From tournaments and prize giveaways to raffles and pub crawls, the club aims to foster recreational team building in and out of the game. The City of Pensacola creates a welcoming environment where teams can connect through play and enjoy high-quality sport experiences. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or a newcomer, there’s pick-up games in volleyball and pickleball along with leagues in kickball and softball running from September to August every year. You must come to a league with a team of eight to 16 players already lined up. The only leagues run by the City right now are softball and kickball priced at $275 per team for an eightweek season. All games are played at Exchange Park in downtown Pensacola, where there’s plenty of shade to keep players cool during the warmer months (and we know Florida has many of those). If you’d rather jump in when the mood strikes, there’s openings for one-off games in volleyball and pickleball at Vickrey Resource Center. Open gym volleyball runs Mondays and

Wednesdays from 6:15 to 8:15 pm for $2 per person each night. For pickleball, courts are free access and open dawn to dusk all week on a first-come, first-serve basis. GOVERNOR RON DESANTIS ANNOUNCES PROPOSAL FOR CITIZEN BILL OF RIGHTS FOR ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Governor Ron DeSantis announced a proposal to protect consumers by establishing an Artificial Intelligence Bill of Rights for citizens. Additionally, Governor DeSantis announced a proposal to protect Floridians from footing the bill for Hyperscale AI Data Centers and to empower local governments to reject their development in their communities. “Today, I proposed new legislation on artificial intelligence and AI data centers to protect Floridians’ privacy, security, and quality of life,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “Our AI proposal will establish an Artificial Intelligence Bill of Rights to define and safeguard Floridians’ rights—including data privacy, parental controls, consumer protections, and restrictions on AI use of an individual’s name, image or likeness without consent.” The Artificial Intelligence proposal will establish an AI Bill of Rights to provide consumers with protections. • Reenact protections Florida has already passed against “deep fakes” and explicit material, including those depicting minors. • Prohibit any state or local government agency from utilizing DeepSeek or any other Chinese-created AI tools to protect American data. • Prohibit AI from using an individual’s Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) without their consent – tie it to harm or sale of a product (political ads, schemes to defraud already in law). • Require a notice to consumers when interacting with AI (Company chatbots). • Prohibit entities from providing “licensed” therapy or mental health counseling through artificial intelligence. • This can be expanded to include use of AI to imitate a licensed professional. • Provide parental controls for minors which will allow parents to access the conversation their child has with a large

language model, set parameters for when the child can access the platform, and notify parents if their child exhibits concerning behavior. • Ensure data inputted to AI is secure and private. • Prohibit companies from selling or sharing personal identifying information with third parties (deidentified) and mirror data privacy protections in current law. • Limit insurance companies from using AI for insurance claims. Require that AI cannot be used as the sole determination in adjusting or denying a claim. Insurers that use AI for claims must detail the use and allow the Office of Insurance Regulation to inspect the AI model to ensure it does not violate unfair insurance trade practices. The Data Centers proposal will protect Consumers from footing the bill for AI Data Centers. The proposal will: • Protect Ratepayers—Prohibit utilities from charging Florida residents more to support hyperscale data center development, including electric, gas, and water utilities. • Protect Taxpayers—No taxpayer subsidies for Big Tech. • Protect Local Control—Allows local government to prohibit data center construction/development. • Protect Florida’s Water Resources— Ensure that water resources are not utilized to the detriment of the public. • Protect Natural Florida— Prevent the construction, siting, or operation of a data center by foreign principals or on land classified as agricultural and/or lands under a greenbelt exemption, and require setbacks and vegetative buffers. Requires FDOT to complete noise abatement reviews to protect natural Florida from noise pollution.

CITY OF PENSACOLA ANNOUNCES POLICE CHIEF FINALISTS, CANDIDATE PUBLIC FORUM SCHEDULED FOR JANUARY 13 Three candidates for the next City of Pensacola Police Department Chief of Police have been recommended to advance in the selection process and will participate in a public forum at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13. The candidates are: • Brian Dugan | Retired Chief of Police for the City of Tampa Police Department • Eric Winstrom | Police Chief for the City of Grand Rapids Police Department • Erik Goss | Acting Deputy Police Chief for the Pensacola Police Department The public forum will be held at the Saenger Theatre, 118 S. Palafox St., providing an opportunity for members of the community to hear from each finalist and learn more about their leadership experience and vision for PPD. Pensacola residents are encouraged to participate by submitting questions for the candidates online no later than 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5. The event will be recorded and posted to the city website. Forum attendance is open to the public. Following the public forum, the selection committee will hold panel interviews beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14. The interviews will be livestreamed, recorded and posted to the city website.

Community Submission

The selection committee reviewed 65 applications from across the country and ultimately selected three finalists based on leadership experience, professional qualifications, and alignment with the needs of the Pensacola community. Each finalist will also have a one-on-one interview with Pensacola Mayor D.C. ESCAMBIA COUNTY TO HOST VOLUNTEER TREE PLANTING DAYS JANUARY 16, 17, 24 Escambia County, in partnership with the Canopy Council and Canopy Restoration Project, invites residents to three volunteer opportunities to help plant trees in Escambia County. Volunteer opportunities will take place Friday, Jan. 16, Saturday, Jan. 17, and Saturday, Jan. 24 at various locations throughout Escambia County. Friday, Jan. 16: Volunteers will meet at the Escambia County Central Office Complex, 3363 W. Park Place, to help transport trees and mulch. Volunteers should wear comfortable clothing and bring their own gloves and water. Time slots are available from 9 a.m. to noon and noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17: Volunteers will meet at the Escambia Extension Office, 3740 Stefani Road, at 8:30

a.m. to watch a short tree planting demonstration before heading out to assigned locations with a team to plant trees. Volunteers should wear comfortable clothing and bring their own shovels, gloves, and water. Saturday, Jan. 24: Volunteers will meet at Galvez Landing, 5820 Cruzat Way, at 8:30 a.m. to watch a short tree planting demonstration before leaving to assigned locations with a team to plant trees. The Canopy Restoration Project unites volunteers and local organizations to plant native trees, beautifying the community and improving the environment for everyone. Trees will be planted in the right of way or front yards of residents who have applied for trees through the Canopy Restoration Project.

DISTRICT 1 AVONDALE NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUP JANUARY 7 A neighborhood cleanup for residents in Avondale will take place Wednesday, Jan. 7. This is a chance for residents to dispose of items such as old furniture, appliances and household waste free of charge. Only residents in the designated cleanup area can participate in the neighborhood cleanup. Please have all items for pickup at the curb by 7 a.m. on the day of the cleanup. Items left at the curb outside of the cleanup area will not be collected. Residents who live in the targeted area will have received a postcard in the mail with more information. Items eligible for removal include: • Household appliances and electronics • Household junk and debris • Bicycles and toys • Old furniture and mattresses

• Barbecue grills • Household hazardous waste (old paint, motor oil, chemicals, batteries) • Tires (limit 10 per household) • Yard debris (tree cuttings, branches, etc.) Items NOT eligible for removal include: • Building materials (concrete, bricks, blocks, roofing, drywall or lumber) • Explosives or ammunition • Auto parts • Dirt or sod • Vehicles or vessels • 55-gallon drums of fluids During neighborhood cleanups, crew members and volunteers visit different neighborhoods in the county to remove a variety of debris and waste free of charge.

CITY OF PENSACOLA SELECTS NEW STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER AND PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR

The City of Pensacola has selected Shannon Nickinson as the new Public Information and Strategic Communications Officer and Tonya Byrd as the new Parks and Recreation Director. In their respective roles, Nickinson will lead the city's Public Information Office and spearhead the municipality's strategic communications initiatives, while Byrd will lead the vision and development of the Parks and Recreation Department. Both will work under the direction of City Administration and Mayor Reeves, playing key roles in advancing the citywide strategic plan. Together, Nickinson and Byrd bring more than 50 years of combined experience and knowledge to city leadership. "As our city continues to move forward and implement the strategic plan, it's essential to pair fresh perspectives with proven leadership," Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves said. "Shannon and Tonya's experience, insight and dedication will keep Pensacola moving forward, enhancing the quality of life for our community's residents and visitors." Shannon Nickinson Nickinson joins the city after four years as Director of Communications at the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition. In her role with IHMC, Nickinson led internal and external communications with an emphasis on content production and storytelling. Previously, Nickinson spent nearly 15 years with the Pensacola News Journal as Chief Content Editor, followed by nine years at the Studer Community Institute as a Project Manager and later as Executive Director of Early Learning. While at SCI, Nickinson implemented projects, programs and tools to assist local parents and children—reaching more than 18,000 families. Nickinson earned her Bachelor of Science from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She is a PACE Award winner and has served on the Northwest Florida YMCA Board of Directors, as well as several other volunteer parent engagement roles for the Escambia County School System.

As the Public Information and Strategic Communications Officer, Nickinson will oversee the Public Information Office's mission, vision and operations. Shannon Nickinson's first day with the City of Pensacola will be Monday, Jan. 5. Tonya Byrd, CPRP Byrd began her tenure with the City of Pensacola in 2014, starting as the Parks and Recreation Marketing Coordinator, followed by promotions to Recreation Superintendent in 2019 and Assistant Director in 2023. As the Assistant Director of the city's Parks and Recreation Department, Byrd oversaw park maintenance, athletics and recreation. Under Byrd's leadership, the department maintained a wide array of programming across community recreational facilities, sports fields, playgrounds and parks, while navigating aging infrastructure and limited resources. Byrd earned her Bachelor of Science in communications from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee, where she began her career in Parks and Recreation as a Marketing and Public Relations Supervisor, Public Information and Marketing Coordinator, and Deputy Director of Family Recreation and Community Engagement. She is a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional and an active member of the National Recreation and Parks Association and the Florida Recreation and Parks Association. Byrd is also a graduate of multiple leadership and municipal management programs and has served in advisory and ambassador roles supporting workforce development, youth leadership and community engagement. As Parks and Recreation Director, Byrd will oversee the department's operations, including the management of parks, recreational facilities and community programs, ensuring high-quality recreational services for the Pensacola community. TWO PATHS, ONE COMMISSION: BROTHERS GRADUATE OCS TOGETHER AND ENTER NAVAL AVIATION Standing side by side at their Officer Candidate School (OCS) graduation, brothers Ensign Zachary Melvin and Ensign Samuel Melvin marked the culmination of two very different journeys that converged at the same moment: commissioning as officers in the U.S. Navy in the same class and earning selection as Naval Flight Officers. For the Melvin brothers, the milestone represented more than the completion of OCS. It was the meeting point of family legacy, personal transformation, and a shared commitment to service — witnessed firsthand by their father, Cmdr. Eric Melvin, a U.S. Navy chaplain currently serving as the command chaplain for USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), flagship to Carrier Strike Group 9. From the Corporate World to the Quarterdeck Samuel Melvin, a Pensacola, Florida, native, entered the Navy directly from civilian life after leaving a corporate career as a business analyst. Though he initially set out to forge his own path, service ultimately called him back to familiar ground. “I wanted to follow in my father’s footsteps, which is why I joined the Navy,” Samuel said. “I tried the corporate world, but I felt unfulfilled. I wanted something more meaningful — something challenging — and I wanted to serve my country like my family was doing.” The decision crystallized during an ordinary workday. “I was sitting at my desk, staring at yet another spreadsheet and feeling completely unfulfilled. I called my brother and said, ‘I cannot do this anymore,’” Samuel recalled. “He gave me the recruiter’s number, and I called on my lunch break.” Learning to Lead Under Pressure Transitioning from civilian life into OCS proved to be an adjustment. “The level of attention to detail we were taught really surprised me. I learned that big achievements start with careful attention to the small things.” he said. Officer Candidate School, the Navy’s commissioning pipeline, is designed to test candidates mentally, physically, and emotionally. For Samuel, one of the most challenging moments came during Officer Personnel Inspection, a high-pressure oneon-one evaluation with an instructor requiring precise uniform preparation and mastery of naval standards. “It taught me that I can learn under pressure,” Samuel said. Having his older brother in the same class made the experience more manageable. “We leaned on each other a lot,” Samuel said. “He helped me with everything from uniform ribbons to encouragement on the hard days.” A Mustang’s Road to Commissioning Zachary Melvin’s path to commissioning followed a different route. A prior-enlisted Sailor and former Mass Communication Specialist, Zachary served under Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) before being selected for OCS. “I wanted more leadership opportunities,” Zachary said. “A Chief once told me it is important for enlisted Sailors to become officers because it gives the enlisted a voice on the other side. That stayed with me.” Unlike his brother, Zachary Melvin viewed commissioning as a long-term goal from the beginning of his Navy career. “I knew early on that I wanted to become a Mustang,” he said, referring to priorenlisted officers. While Zachary entered OCS with fleet experience, the transition still demanded growth. “At OCS I had to learn how to be an officer. That adjustment took time.” His enlisted background, however, became an asset. “It gave me perspective,” Zachary said. “I could help classmates understand the ‘why’ behind the training and how it was shaping us into warfighters.” Sharing OCS with his brother added a unique dynamic. “It was fun,” Zachary said. “We shared the humor and the adversity — the planned stress — and grew through it together.” Selecting Naval Aviation Both brothers selected Naval Flight Officer, a competitive warfare specialty within naval aviation. “I chose aviation because they are an elite fighting-force that sets the standard for the best.,” Zachary said. For Samuel, aviation represents a developing passion. “I am still undecided on an airframe,” he said. “Right now, my focus is working hard and doing the best I can.” A Father’s Honor, A Family’s Legacy Their commissioning ceremony carried special significance. Cmdr. Melvin administered the oath of office to both of his sons in a private ceremony following graduation. Also attending the ceremony was Zachary and Samuel’s brother, Nathaniel, a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps, currently stationed at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. “It was the honor of a lifetime,” Cmdr. Melvin said. “They wanted to be commissioned together, at the very same moment. Watching my oldest and youngest sons take that step was incredibly humbling.” The moment brought his own Navy journey full circle. “I thought back to when I reported to boot camp in 1989 and later, being commissioned into the Chaplain Corps,” he said. “Now, all three of my sons are serving on active duty.” Cmdr. Melvin also delivered the invocation for OCS Class 03-26, a moment he described as deeply emotional. “As a chaplain, I was reminding them to rely on faith and values beyond themselves,” he said. “As a father, it was sobering, knowing my sons may one day be placed in harm’s way.” Looking Ahead For Zachary, the family connection deepened the meaning of the milestone. “It means more because my family is part of it,” he said. “You have your Navy family and your real family serving alongside you which ultimately raises the stakes on how you perform.” Looking ahead, both brothers will report to flight school, where their paths will continue — possibly diverging again — but grounded in the same foundation. “I want to be an officer my Sailors can trust and rely on,” Zachary said. For Samuel, the moment represents a decisive turn toward purpose. “This feels like closing the loop after all the hard work,” he said. “It’s just the beginning.” Following their commissioning, both brothers reported to Naval Aviation Schools Command (NASC) in Pensacola, Florida, where they will begin flight training as Naval Flight Officers. NASC, a subordinate command of Naval Education and Training Command, oversees aviation training pipelines that prepare officers for service across the Fleet. Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) oversees the Navy’s training and education continuum, developing battleready Sailors and officers from accession through advanced warfighting skills. Through more than 250 training commands and schoolhouses worldwide, NETC prepares the Navy’s force to operate, fight, and win across all domains, ensuring the Fleet is ready to meet today’s challenges and tomorrow’s threats.

RED BULBS 10 & 11 PLACED ON WREATH DURING KEEP THE WREATH GREEN Two more red bulbs have been added to the wreath by Escambia County Fire Rescue during "Keep the Wreath Green" following two residential structure fires Monday, Dec. 29, bringing the total to 11 red bulbs. Beal Street Fire At 9:46 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29, Escambia County Fire Rescue responded to a multi-residential structure fire in the 8300 block of Beal Street. Firefighters arrived at a single-story duplex showing flames from the front door. The crew from Engine 7 was able to quickly extinguish the fire using a hand-held water extinguisher, preventing further damage to the home and adjacent unit. The home will require minor repairs before being reoccupied.

ECFR investigated and determined that an accidental cooking-related incident caused the fire. East Olive Road Fire Shortly after the Beal Street fire, ECFR was dispatched to another cooking-related multiresidential structure fire at 10:39 p.m. in the 3200 block of East Olive Road. Firefighters arrived at a two-story apartment complex with no visible flames or smoke present. After arriving at the impacted unit, firefighters discovered damage from a kitchen fire that was extinguished by the occupant using a fire extinguisher. ECFR confirmed there were no additional flames and used fans to ventilate the smoke out of the unit. There were no injuries, but the occupant was displaced due to the damage.
