omewhere over the rainbow, in downtown Pensacola, a new bar and eatery has opened where everyone is welcome and celebrated, as long as you’re not wicked. Officially open as of October 22, Dorothy’s brings something truly unique to the downtown area—and with a fun theatrical twist. Follow the hand-painted yellow brick road not only to the center of the dance floor but also toward made-from-scratch PortugueseSouthern fare, enchanting elixirs fit for the greatest and most terrible witches and wizards and a plethora of references to the world of the wonderful Wizard of Oz. Dorothy’s was dreamt into existence by OASIS Florida Executive Director Kurt Goodman, General Manager Benjamin Haupt and Steel Pony Diner Co-Owners Eric Michael and Kyree Whitehead. The bar and restaurant boasts colorful Wizard of Oz-themed decor, craft cocktails, quality food and offers a new clubbing destination that is designed to celebrate everyone. However, Dorothy’s is more than an exciting new nightlife experience, it’s a fundraising lifeline for OASIS Florida, a nonprofit dedicated to the prevention and spread of HIV and to support those who are affected by HIV/AIDS. The for-profit bar and restaurant is a subsidiary of OASIS, and all the profits are spent toward funding the non-profit’s public health programs. OASIS provides everything from housing to food bank assistance for all four counties of Northwest Florida. Any service that a person living with HIV needs can be found through OASIS.
Dorothy’s slogan, “Where everyone is celebrated—just don’t be wicked,” effectively summarizes the overall mission. This inclusive restaurant and bar atmosphere was established as a creative way to help offset budget cuts for OASIS, which is expected to lose $1.6 million in funding due to state and federal budget cuts. “The real goal is to make sure that no programs are being cut because of federal and state funding cuts,” Haupt said. “Anything in addition to that means more programs and more help going toward people who need it. Right now, OASIS is losing about $300,000 in state and federal funding, so we want to donate $300,000 by the end of the year, every year.” Steel Pony Diner Co-Owners Eric Michael and Kyree Whitehead have partnered with Dorothy’s as the resident restaurateurs, specializing in Portuguese dishes combined with Southern classics. “Eric Michael is the head chef and co-owns the restaurant with his husband [Whitehead],” Haupt explained. “He creates a combination of flavors from where he’s from—Fall River, Mass. and Portugal, where his family is from. His grandma cooked a lot of Portuguese food for him growing up, so that’s the flavor profile that they have brought to the bar world.” Steel Pony will continue dishing up their crowd-favorite dishes at Dorothy’s while also curating a menu specifically with Dorothy’s in mind—bar foods, burgers, biscuits and gravy, loaded fries, sandwiches and more homemade, hand-battered, never frozen good eats—which they serve late into the night. Eventually, Dorothy’s and Steel Pony would like
to bring more 24-hour sit-in dining options back to Pensacola. All Steel Pony dishes are made with pristine detail and precision, such as their Prego Steak Sandwich with Portuguese soup, Reuben hot dog and even many vegan and gluten-free options for a different take on late-night bar food. In addition to the quality food, Dorothy’s also serves themed craft cocktails and an assortment of Portuguese wines. Bar-goers can try multiple Ozian elixirs such as the Judy Garland, a floral old-fashioned named after the famous Hollywood actress who played Miss Dorothy herself. Also on the menu is the crowd-favorite Curse of the Poppies, which is best described as a spicy hibiscus margarita, as well as Haupt’s personal favorite Oz’s Lilly, which is a twist on an aviation—made with black cherry, violet, lemon and gin. “I wanted sophisticated, nice craft cocktails,” Haupt said. “But, I didn’t want anything too crazy that people didn’t know what it was. I want to make sure that everyone can feel like
they can get a cocktail off the menu with the price point to match.” In addition to curating Dorothy’s craft cocktail menu, Haupt went to work on projects around the restaurant, including painting the iconic yellow brick road that also doubles as a dance floor later into the evening hours. Local artist Daniel Andreu, was commissioned to paint the larger than life murals that adorn the inside walls of Dorothy’s. “We told [Andreu] that the restaurant was Wizard of Oz-themed, and he came in with his drawings and renderings, and we ultimately chose him to do the artwork because of his fantastic realism work,” Haupt said. “My goal for everything when it comes to the bar is that everything should be sophisticated and whimsical, which seems like they could be antonyms, but together I want the space to feel whimsically sophisticated because that perfectly encapsulates what the Wizard of Oz is.” Andreu depicts the key faces of the Wizard of Oz characters, including the bar’s namesake. Dorothy’s
visitors will find these murals illuminated under black lights, offering an extra special effect after the lights go down, as it highlights the outline of the faces. While there are many Blue Angels murals throughout Pensacola, Dorothy’s houses an extra special one that is unlike any other—a portrayal of The Wicked Witch of the West chasing after the jets on her broomstick. Located at 309 S. Reus St., Dorothy’s is in a prime part of downtown Pensacola, right across from the Blue Wahoos Stadium and Pensacola City Hall. Dorothy’s is contributing more energy to the overall downtown area, receiving unwavering support from the local community since its grand opening on Halloween. As the bar gains more footing, Haupt hopes to open for trivia nights, karaoke, special events and rentals. Dorothy’s is currently open Sunday through Thursday from 3 pm to midnight and on Friday from 3 pm to 2 am. GREATER PENSACOLA CHAMBER UNVEILS 2026 PRIORITIES AT ANNUAL LEGISLATIVE LUNCHEON
PENSACOLA CHILDREN’S MUSEUM REOPENS WITH NEW EXHIBITS FUNDED BY IMPACT 100
The Greater Chamber of Commerce unveiled it’s 2026 legislative priorities at its annual Legislative Luncheon. The luncheon featured a preview of the upcoming session presented by business lobbyist Darrick McGhee. McGhee lobbies for business organizations Florida’s Great Northwest, the Florida Chamber, and the Florida Retail Federation. McGhee covered the key topics that will be debated during the 2026 legislative session including Florda’s budget, property tax reform, and workforce development. He also shared insights on the end of Governor Ron Desantis’ tenure and the upcoming race for Florida Governor in 2026. Chamber Board Member Ruthie Noel emceed the event and unveiled the Greater Pensacola Chamber’s legislative priorities for the upcoming session. “This year’s legislative priorities reflect the issues our business community tells us matter most: Workforce development, childcare access,
On Dec. 20, the Pensacola Children’s Museum opened to the public with a new exhibit entitled “Our Town: A Space for All,” featuring various historic businesses and sites inspired by Pensacola landmarks. The museum is also debuting a new, publicly accessible sensory space, entitled “Calming Seas Sensory Space,” which is the first of its kind in Northwest Florida. Both the exhibit and sensory space were funded through IMPACT 100 Pensacola Bay Area with a $100,670 grant. “We are grateful for the support of IMPACT 100,” said Rob Overton, executive director for University of West Florida Historic Trust. “Their gift allows us to preserve Pensacola’s rich history by placing it directly in the hands of our children.” In the Our Town exhibit, which is on the museum’s first floor, young guests can explore a reimagined town center that includes the Silas Stearns Fishing Smack, Pensacola Dairy Bar Milk Bottle Diner, My Town Mural, Garden Street Toddler Spot, Frisco Train Station, Pride of Pensacola Tiny Tot Train, Germania Hose Company Fire Station and Theo's Construction House. On the second floor, the Calming Seas Sensory Space will serve as a quiet space for guests to center themselves amongst the activity and bustle of the Children's Museum. This peaceful space will include a tactile octopus mural, mesmerizing bubble tube and sensory
affordable housing, transportation, and a fair tax structure,” said Noel. “As the leading voice for business in Pensacola, the Chamber is committed to advocating for policies that strengthen our regional economy and support the long-term success of employers and families alike.” The 2026 Greater Pensacola Chamber of Commerce legislative priorities are: • Support for Regional Transportation Projects • Initiatives to Improve Childcare Access and Affordability • Support Workforce Development Initiatives • Ensure Property Tax Reform Does Not Lead to an Increase in Business Taxes • Support Affordable Housing Initiatives, Permitting, and Insurance Reforms The Greater Pensacola Chamber will be providing regular updates on these priorities and other key issues throughout session.
PENSACOLA MARDI GRAS SECOND LINE TUESDAYS 2026 - WHERE PALAFOX GETS A GROOVE Pensacola Mardi Gras is proud to announce PMG Second Line Tuesdays 2026, a new weekly Mardi Gras gathering designed to bring music, movement, and unmistakable Mardi Gras energy to downtown Pensacola at a pivotal and exciting moment for Palafox Street. Beginning Tuesday, January 6, just one day after Reimagine Palafox construction officially begins and Palafox Street closes, Pensacola Mardi Gras and the Mardi Gras Krewe Community are rallying in true Mardi Gras fashion to ensure that downtown remains vibrant, accessible, and full of life throughout the street’s transformation. The weekly series is intentionally timed to coincide with the start of the construction project, helping keep people downtown, supporting local businesses, and reinforcing that Palafox remains open, active, and easy to enjoy. PMG Second Line Tuesdays will take place every Tuesday during the Mardi Gras Season: January 6, 13, 20, and 27, and February 3 and 10. Each Tuesday celebration invites locals and visitors alike to experience the spirit of Mardi Gras in a relaxed, street-level setting while actively supporting the many Palafox Street businesses that will remain open and going strong during construction. “These Second Line Tuesdays are about showing up for Palafox,” said Danny Zimmern, President of Pensacola Mardi Gras Foundation, Inc. “We want people to know the street is open, the businesses are open, and Mardi Gras is very much alive downtown. This is a Mardi Gras way of supporting our community during an important transformation.” Designed for both participants and spectators, PMG Second Line Tuesdays are meant to be interactive and welcoming. Everyone is encouraged to join in the fun, whether gathering at the designated starting location, or hopping into the procession as it passes their favorite spot along the route. Attendees are invited to come downtown early, get seated at their favorite Palafox Street restaurant or bar, order a drink or a bite to eat, and be ready to fill the street with music, movement, and Mardi Gras spirit as the second line rolls through. Each Tuesday, crowds will gather at a designated starting location on Palafox Street, which will vary weekly and be announced on the Pensacola Mardi Gras Facebook page each Monday. Participants are encouraged to arrive by 5:00 p.m., with the second line stepping off at approximately 5:30 p.m. The procession will loop along Palafox Street between Garden and Main Streets before
returning to its original starting point, creating a contained, walkable experience that is easy to join at any point. Every Second Line Tuesday has been adopted by different Mardi Gras Krewes, whose members will arrive in Krewe attire with umbrellas and handkerchiefs ready to strut and celebrate to the music. Leading each second line will be the New Orleans Ramblers, bringing authentic New Orleans rhythm and sound to the street. After the loop, the band will remain on the sidewalk playing jazz for approximately 20 to 30 minutes, keeping the Mardi Gras groove alive as people watch, gather, and continue enjoying Palafox. Krewes committed to host Palafox Gets a Groove include Daisy Dukes, Cheers, Blues, Priscus, Seville, Warriors, Hip Huggers, Order of Calliope, Pensacola Belles, and Mystic Mafia. After the second line and brief sidewalk performance, participants and spectators alike are encouraged to continue the evening by visiting local bars and restaurants and supporting the Palafox Street businesses that are an essential part of Pensacola’s downtown culture. PMG Second Line Tuesdays are made possible through the support of community sponsors who help lead each Tuesday’s celebration while supporting both Palafox businesses and Pensacola’s Mardi Gras excitement. Sponsors will distribute a limited number of souvenir Mardi Gras handkerchiefs to second line groovers along the route. Current sponsors include The Local Pulse, Hanto & Clarke, and Premium Parking. Additional sponsorship opportunities remain available. Businesses or organizations interested in sponsoring a Second Line Tuesday are encouraged to reach out for more information. Where Palafox Gets a Groove is more than a slogan. It reflects a collective effort by Pensacola Mardi Gras, its Krewes, sponsors, and downtown partners to bring joy to the street, support local businesses, and remind the community that Mardi Gras in Pensacola is not limited to weekends or parade routes. From early January through February, Tuesdays will belong to the music, the movement, and the community. Additional details regarding weekly starting locations and participating Krewes will be announced in advance of each Second Line Tuesday. toys to create a calm space for children to regulate. To better meet the needs of visitors with sensory processing differences, part of the grant was also allocated to train museum staff to provide a therapeutic and enriching environment for relaxation, stimulation and improved sensory experiences for guests. This training included staff sensory certifications and the creation of interactive sensory bags throughout the museum complex. “I’ve loved watching these ideas jump off the page and turn into real spaces kids can climb into, touch and explore,” said Wendi Davis, guest experience manager for University of West Florida Historic Trust. “Each little stop in Our Town is full of exciting adventures, but it’s also rooted in the stories that shaped Pensacola. Children learn best through play, so creating a place where curiosity, imagination and our community’s history can grow side by side has been such a joy.” The closure also gave the museum the opportunity to refresh the Land and Sea and the Kid's Clinic exhibits. These updates include adding Legos to the Land and Sea exhibit for young guests to enjoy. The Pensacola Children’s Museum is part of the UWF Historic Trust properties and sites. Located at 115 East Zaragoza Street in Downtown Pensacola, the Pensacola Children’s Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.
SANTA ROSA COUNTY NEW YEAR HOLIDAY CLOSURES The following Santa Rosa County offices will be closed on Wednesday, Dec. 31, and Thursday, Jan. 1: • Santa Rosa County Board of Commissioners, including Animal Services, Library System and Veterans Services • The Central Landfill will be open on Wednesday, Dec. 31, and closed on Thursday, Jan. 1.
• Santa Rosa County Property Appraiser • Santa Rosa County Supervisor of Elections • Santa Rosa County Tax Collector will also be closed on Friday, Jan. 2 Santa Rosa County Clerk of Court will only be closed on Thursday, Jan. 1. BAPTIST HEALTH CARE AND SANTA SPREAD HOLIDAY CHEER AT C.A. WEIS ELEMENTARY Santa Claus arrived via helicopter to more than 500 excited students at C.A. Weis Elementary School, a Community Partnership School in Pensacola, on Friday, Dec. 19. The special visit is part of the annual Christmas celebration sponsored by Baptist Health Care. Team members across Baptist departments shopped for the students’ wish lists and brought snacks, games and activities to each classroom. Funds for the Christmas gifts and party are provided through the Helping Hands team member giving program of the Baptist Health Care Foundation, which is funded by
generous contributions from Baptist team members across the organization. “We look forward to this day every year – our teams start reaching out as soon as school starts, excited and ready to get started with the planning,” said Maegan Leonard, program manager, Baptist Health Care Foundation. “We are grateful to be able to give back in such a meaningful way and spread some holiday cheer to these children before Christmas.” Baptist has been hosting the annual Christmas party for C.A. Weis for more than 20 years.

Reeves announced Direction ’25: Pensacola Parks Revitalization Project, the City of Pensacola Parks & Recreation Department is proud to report substantial progress across the $21.7 million initiative to repair and enhance parks and facilities in Pensacola. At the same time, when specialized work required outside expertise, the department has made a strong commitment to hiring local small contractors where possible — ensuring project dollars stay within the Pensacola community and support the local economy. Direction ’25 Progress Highlights • Park Sidewalk Accessibility Improvements – Complete Parks across the city now feature enhanced accessibility thanks to newly restored sidewalks at Belvedere Park, Eastgate Park, Lion’s Park, Granada Square, Zamora Square, La Mancha Square and Toledo Square. Escambia County Board of Adjustment Established by the Board of County Commissioners through adoption of Escambia County Ordinance No. 88-16, enacted on December 1, 1988. Ordinance 2004-9 amended the Escambia County Code of Ordinances to change the membership from five to seven members, all of whom must reside within Escambia County. Ordinance 2004-9 specifies the BCC endows the BOA with the power to conduct any required quasi-judicial public hearings to grant, grant with conditions or deny applications for variances, conditional uses, requests for final extension of development orders for site plan approval, requests for the temporary use of a mobile home as a guest residence due to medical hardship and appeals of administrative decisions filed by those persons aggrieved by interpretations or administration of these regulations. Ordinance 2001-35 provides a right of appeal to the Board of County Commissioners for review of the orders of the BOA affirming, reversing or modifying the decision of an administrative official.
UWF CREATES ACADEMY OF AMERICAN CIVIC REPUBLICANISM The University of West Florida Board of Trustees has approved the creation of the Academy of American Civic Republicanism, a new initiative aimed at enhancing civic knowledge and engagement through education on American history, government and principles foundational to the American republic. Funded by a $1,555,318 three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the center’s programs will coincide with the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations. “The Academy of American Civic Republicanism isn’t just academic,” said Interim President Manny Diaz Jr. “It’s the practical pathway to informed debate, civic virtue and the kind of freedom that strengthens families and communities.” The Academy will operate as an independent academic center dedicated to exploring civic republicanism — a tradition with deep historical roots and which emphasizes active citizenship, civic virtue and the common good. Originating in ancient Greece and Rome, civic republicanism focuses on self-governance through participatory citizenship and mixed political institutions that balance power to prevent corruption and domination, as articulated
by thinkers like Aristotle, Cicero, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. "As we approach the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding, it is important that this Academy function as a bulwark against collective civic amnesia, training teachers and students in the principles of self-government that both proceed from and sustain the liberty that has defined the United States of America for a quarter of a millenium,” said Dr. Clifford Humphrey, chief of staff and vice president of strategic initiatives, who represented the proposal. “Generations of Americans have solemnly declared their loyalty to the republic for which our flag stands. This Academy aims to educate participants about precisely what that enduring commitment means.” Through year-round programming, the Academy will serve UWF students, K-12 educators and the Northwest Florida community with activities such as summer institutes, webinars, conferences, public events, guest lectures and debates. The Academy’s educational approach will emphasize direct engagement with primary sources from the Colonial era, the American Founding and the Early Republic period, allowing participants to explore original documents and ideas in their historical context.

ECFR ADDS SIXTH RED BULB TO WREATH DURING "KEEP THE WREATH GREEN" Escambia County Fire Rescue has added the sixth red bulb to the "Keep the Wreath Green" wreath in 2025 following a residential structure fire Thursday, Dec. 18. Escambia County Fire Rescue was dispatched to a residential structure fire in the 1600 block of Dee's Road at 2:04 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 18, where light smoke was visible from the garage of a single-story house. Firefighters located a smoldering fire inside the garage and worked quickly to prevent the fire from spreading into the house. The fire was extinguished by 2:15 a.m. The garage sustained moderate fire damage, while the house received minor smoke damage. The American Red Cross is assisting the occupants with temporary housing while the home is repaired. ECFR conducted the investigation and determined that a space heater being used in
the garage caused the fire. Escambia County EMS evaluated one patient, who declined transportation to the hospital. During the month-long "Keep the Wreath Green" fire safety campaign, five-foot wreaths will be on display at 18 county fire stations and five city fire stations, as well as Escambia County's Ernie Lee Magaha Government Building downtown, the Escambia County Public Safety Building, Pensacola City Hall and Cordova Mall. Each time firefighters respond to a residential or commercial fire with damage, a green light bulb will be replaced with a red one to remind citizens of the dangers posed by fires in residential and commercial buildings. Escambia County Fire Rescue would like to encourage residents to practice space heater safety and know the potential risks associated with home heating equipment.
CITY OF PENSACOLA SELECTS NEW STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER AND PARKS AND RECREATION DIRECTOR The City of Pensacola has selected Shannon Nickinson as the new Public Information and Strategic Communications Officer and Tonya Byrd as the new Parks and Recreation Director. In their respective roles, Nickinson will lead the city's Public Information Office and spearhead the municipality's strategic communications initiatives, while Byrd will lead the vision and development of the Parks and Recreation Department. Both will work under the direction of City Administration and Mayor Reeves, playing key roles in advancing the citywide strategic plan. Together, Nickinson and Byrd bring more than 50 years of combined experience and knowledge to city leadership. "As our city continues to move forward and implement the strategic plan, it's essential to pair fresh perspectives with proven leadership," Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves said. "Shannon and Tonya's experience, insight and dedication will keep Pensacola moving forward, enhancing the quality of life for our community's residents and visitors." Shannon Nickinson Nickinson joins the city after four years as Director of Communications at the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition. In her role with IHMC, Nickinson led internal and external communications with an emphasis on content production and storytelling. Previously, Nickinson spent nearly 15 years with the Pensacola News Journal as Chief Content Editor, followed by nine years at the Studer Community Institute as a Project Manager and later as Executive Director of Early Learning. While at SCI, Nickinson implemented projects, programs and tools to assist local parents and children — reaching more than 18,000 families. Nickinson earned her Bachelor of Science from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She is a PACE Award winner and has served on the Northwest Florida YMCA Board of Directors, as well as several other volunteer parent engagement roles for the Escambia County School System.
As the Public Information and Strategic Communications Officer, Nickinson will oversee the Public Information Office's mission, vision and operations. Shannon Nickinson's first day with the City of Pensacola will be Monday, Jan. 5. Tonya Byrd, CPRP Byrd began her tenure with the City of Pensacola in 2014, starting as the Parks and Recreation Marketing Coordinator, followed by promotions to Recreation Superintendent in 2019 and Assistant Director in 2023. As the Assistant Director of the city's Parks and Recreation Department, Byrd oversaw park maintenance, athletics and recreation. Under Byrd's leadership, the department maintained a wide array of programming across community recreational facilities, sports fields, playgrounds and parks, while navigating aging infrastructure and limited resources. Byrd earned her Bachelor of Science in communications from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee, where she began her career in Parks and Recreation as a Marketing and Public Relations Supervisor, Public Information and Marketing Coordinator, and Deputy Director of Family Recreation and Community Engagement. She is a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional and an active member of the National Recreation and Parks Association and the Florida Recreation and Parks Association. PENSACOLA BEACH GATEWAY IMPROVEMENTS PROJECT TO BEGIN JANUARY 2026 Escambia County’s Construction Management Division is preparing to begin construction on the Pensacola Beach Gateway Improvements Project, replacing the existing Bob Sikes Toll Plaza on Pensacola Beach. Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2026 and includes demolition of the current Bob Sikes Toll Plaza to build a new toll gantry with applicable toll-by-plate equipment, CCTV cameras, and new fiber optic communications. Work also includes replacing the roadway once the existing toll booth is demolished. The new toll gantry will offer enhanced safety features, such as better access for emergency response vehicles, while also helping to reduce congestion at the entrance to Pensacola Beach. Work is expected to take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; however, some work may also take place
at night and on weekends as needed. Drivers should use extra caution and follow road crew instructions and posted signs when traveling through the work zone. Vehicles will have access to Pensacola Beach during the work period, though lane closures and traffic detours may be in place at times. The project is expected to be completed by summer 2026, weather permitting. If roadway closures are necessary or work is delayed, another notice will be issued. The Pensacola Beach Gateway Improvements Project is funded by Local Option Sales Tax, Tourist Development Tax, and Bob Sikes Toll revenue funds, with construction costs totaling $6,559,570.56. The GreenSimmons Company, Inc. is the primary contractor, and Mott MacDonald will provide construction inspection and daily monitoring for Escambia County.
