LOCAL EFFORTS TO REDUCE FOOD INSECURITY

s the holidays approach and the year comes to a close, we’re reminded to reflect on what and who is important in our lives. Here at Pensacola Magazine we are reflecting on our connection to the community, especially as we enter a season best known for the act of giving. The biggest questions: What does it mean to be a good neighbor and how can we help our fellow Pensacolians who might be struggling this season? To answer these questions, we looked to some Pensacola residents who are driving change locally to lessen the impact of food insecurity. While our city is abundant with people and organizations providing aid to those in need, speaking with some of those generous locals reminds us of how the need for help is always present and why it is so important to continue to give back. Food insecurity certainly isn’t an issue unique to Pensacola, but it is still felt strongly among some of our most vulnerable citizens who do not have sufficient access to food. Sometimes the best way to put it into perspective is to look at numbers that reflect the current food-insecurity situation. While the exact number is still being tallied for 2025, it is estimated that over 3.2 million Floridians are food insecure this year–a number that has steadily climbed since 2019. On a scale that hits closer to home: this means that for every seven families you know, one is likely affected. Grocery Buddy What began as a talk between four friends transformed into a fullblown initiative geared toward feeding locals in our community during a time of uncertainty. Grocery Buddy is the culmination of efforts led by Veronique Zayas, Emily Ley, Hale Morrissette and Beth Schweigert. While
Grocery Buddy is not a new concept to other cities in America, it was an idea that these four women wanted to incorporate in our own backyard. At the end of October, when many were facing further food insecurity related to the sudden halt of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, Schweigert, Ley and Zayas, jumped into a group text knowing they had to reach out to someone already actively involved in our community to provide assistance to the people who needed it most. Of course, this led them to teaming up with Morrissette, who helped organize ROOTS (Reclaiming Our Own Transitional Stability) this summer with the goal of offering transitional housing, workforce development, medical services and access to grocery boxes. Since Morrissette was already working with a nonprofit also starting to build grocery boxes for immediate pickup, she was able to provide Grocery Buddy with the structure and platform it needed to launch. Hearing from each of these women, the overall driving theme behind establishing Grocery Buddy in Pensacola was this: food represents a basic need that every person deserves to receive. “We can’t fix everything but we can feed people,” author, podcaster and Grocery Buddy Co-Organizer Emily Ley said. “What a beautiful way to care for people in our community, you know. Food is a most basic need, but it’s also such a communication of love.” Grocery Buddy is a system of people helping others in a more personal way than just sending a donation–although food and cash donations are always appreciated, especially for those who want to help but may not be able to fund an entire grocery list. To get started, anyone requiring food assistance can sign up and request a list of food items specific to their household needs. When you sign up, you’ll be matched

with a “grocery buddy,” a donor who has the option of ordering groceries for delivery, delivering the groceries in person or shopping with their match to pick out pantry necessities. Grocery buddies are usually paired with a family who is within a reasonable travel distance, and the match is often tailored to specific requests like a buddy wanting to help a family with pets or children. While Morrissette creates the nonprofit forms and verbiage for community outreach, Zayas handles the spreadsheets and logistics of matching families, Ley serves at the front of communications and Schweigert provides the planning plus venues for awareness events and grocery drop-offs. The group often shares duties, although they gravitated naturally to their roles based on their skillset: Morrissette is a social worker and community activist, Zayas is the founder and intellect behind Hatchmark Studio, Ley is a best-selling author with a background in advertising and Schweigert is a thriving real estate agent as well as the co-owner of Odd Colony Brewing Company and The Burrow. “Being able to meet people's needs with resources and the resource being another person who you can build a connection with impacts me the most,” Morrissette said. “That's the part that I love about seeing the outpouring of love: seeing people figure out this is how I can best help you and how they can best get help. That is what we need more of in the world.” Within 14 days of launching, Grocery Buddy matched 374 buddies with families and raised more than $10,000. While Grocery Buddy started as a way to help families get food when SNAP was on hold, the program will continue as a resource for locals who need access to groceries. Originally a partnership with ROOTS, Grocery Buddy is maintaining momentum and now partnering
directly with EPPS Christian Center. WolfGang Pensacola When we think of food insecurity sometimes we forget that this can apply to more than just our human neighbors. As families face issues with getting access to food, entire households are affected—sometimes that means worrying about how furry family members will be fed too. Jess and Kim Wolford, owners of the pet-event planning company WolfGang Pensacola, are two avid animal supporters who provide assistance when it comes to supplying the animals of our community with help when they need it. Most recently, news circulated regarding families who were relocated to Pensacola NAS from Guantanamo Bay ahead of Hurricane Melissa, a category 5 storm. Due to an overwhelming demand to also feed incoming pets, USO Florida reached out to the Wolfords who then initiated a supply drive to gather food donations for over 300 animals living with the displaced families. Within 8 hours of promoting the drive, USO informed the couple that they had far exceeded their quota. Leftover dog and cat food from the drive was split between Jojo’s Pet Food Pantry at Escambia County Animal Shelter, Pensacola Humane Society and at least 22 families that had been furloughed. “The last thing we want is for people to give up animals because of something they can’t control,” Jess Wolford said. The animal food drive for USO is just one of many examples where the Wolfords have lent a helping hand to Pensacola’s animal community. Together, they also founded Pensacola Pawdi Gras, a nonprofit that hosts
an annual Mardi Gras celebration and also organizes events throughout the year to support animals in local shelters and rescues in need. Another such event by Pensacola Pawdi Gras is the third annual Christmas Shelter Pet Drive running now through December 20. The goal is to provide a gift package–filled with a new toy, cozy fleece blanket and a bag of treats–for each dog and cat at the Escambia County Animal Shelter. The drive aims to gather enough donations for at least 300 gift packages. Over the past two years, this community drive has enabled the couple to provide gifts to over 700 animals with the help of their philanthropy Pensacola Pawdi Gras. While monetary donations are welcome, the community is encouraged to drop off non-stuffed toys, blankets and treat bags in person at partnered locations like Perfect Plain Brewing Company, Pensacola Bay Brewery, De Novo Salon, SoBo Boutique, Titanium Wireless and Play Pensacola. Volunteers will personally deliver these gift packages to eager animals on December 21. Although donations are important, and the reason why WolfGang Pensacola is able to offer necessities like food and simple luxuries like toys and a soft blanket to curl up on, the Wolfords stress the significance of having volunteers who are willing to spend time with shelter animals as well. “We’re going to see shelter numbers rise and one of our biggest passions is getting volunteers into the shelters,” Wolford said. “It’s a huge impact even if you can do only an hour, for shelter animals to experience human touch and interaction. CREDIT UNIONS UNITE TO PRESENT $48,000 TO CHILDREN’S MIRACLE NETWORK Credit unions from across Northwest Florida and the Gulf Coast came together at Studer Family Children’s Hospital on Friday December 5, 2025, to present a $48,000 donation to Children’s Miracle Network (CMN). The funds were raised through the inaugural Northwest & Gulf Coast Chapters Charity Scramble Golf Tournament and will directly support the purchase of the Tecotherm Cooling System for medically fragile newborns in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. While the tournament brought together teams from credit unions, vendors, and community partners for a day of camaraderie and friendly competition, the real victory is the impact these funds will have on local children and families who rely on the specialized care provided at Studer Family Children’s Hospital, our region’s local CMN hospital. Today’s check presentation will include leaders and representatives from the Northwest Gulf Coast Chapters of the League of Credit Unions, Studer Family Children’s Hospital, and Children’s Miracle Network. Attendees of the check presentation were able to tour the facility and learn more about the life saving care that is given each and every day at Studer Family Children’s Hospital. Dr. Dawn Walton, Chief Medical Officer for Studer Family Children’s Hospital, spoke on the important part this new equipment will have for the many infants that are cared for at the hospital. The Charity Scramble reflects the collaborative spirit that defines credit unions. By working side-by-side across chapters, institutions, and communities, participating credit unions demonstrated what is possible when cooperation drives the mission. “Every child deserves the chance to grow up healthy, and through the generosity of events like this, we’re able to provide the care, comfort, and hope children need to heal,” said Michaela McCarthy, Children’s Miracle Network Coordinator. “This donation makes an immediate and meaningful difference for families right here at home.” Adrienne Maygarden, Executive Director of the Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation, emphasized the importance of partnerships
that invest in local pediatric care. “Seeing credit unions unite around a shared purpose is truly inspiring,” Maygarden said. “Their support strengthens our ability to deliver life-saving care, advanced equipment, and programs that lift up children and families during their most vulnerable moments.” Derrick Aguilar, President of the Northwest Chapter of the League of Credit Unions, and Jan Page, President of the Gulf Coast Chapter, highlighted the cooperative power behind the donation. “Credit unions exist to serve and today is a beautiful example of what service looks like,” Page said. “This demonstrates the collaborative power credit unions have to strengthen the communities we serve. By joining forces among our region’s credit unions, we’re not just making a donation; we’re investing in our ability to serve our children’s healthcare needs for years to come,” added Aguilar. The Charity Scramble Golf Tournament was established to create a meaningful, sustainable way for credit unions to support Children’s Miracle Network and its mission to meet pediatric healthcare needs within the local community. Funds raised remain 100% local, directly benefiting the programs, equipment, and services that help children receive the highest level of care close to home. ESCAMBIA COUNTY DONATES TREES TO KINGSFIELD ELEMENTARY FOR PLAYGROUND SHADE The Escambia County Natural Resources Management Department recently donated and planted 14 native canopy trees at Kingsfield Elementary School in Cantonment, providing students with additional shade for the school's playground. The trees will give students a cooler, more comfortable playtime area, along with providing a wide range of environmental and aesthetic benefits. The project was funded through the county’s Tree Mitigation Fund, which supports planting trees on public property. "I'm excited that we were able to partner with Kingsfield Elementary to provide these 14 trees and give students a more comfortable playground area, which is especially important during the warmer months," District 5 Commissioner Steven Barry said. "Any opportunity to give back to our community, especially to our children, is truly what public service is all about. I hope Kingsfield students will enjoy their new playground shade for many years to come."
"I'm so thankful that we are the recipients of such an amazing gift," said Quinn Evans, Principal of Kingsfield Elementary School. "Kingsfield Elementary's landscape will be forever changed and we are truly grateful." In addition to offering shade and reducing ambient air temperatures, trees help lessen stormwater runoff, which can mitigate flooding in surrounding areas. For the schoolyard, the county selected deciduous trees. This choice will reduce summer heat, making outdoor activities more pleasant for children. In winter, when the trees shed their leaves, the sun will naturally warm the playground. “This is a great example of how thoughtful planning can improve both the environment and the quality of life for our students and citizens,” County Arborist Jimmie Jarratt said. The county’s investment in Kingsfield Elementary highlights its ongoing commitment to sustainability and enhancing public spaces for future generations.

SECOND RED BULB PLACED ON WREATH DURING KEEP THE WREATH GREEN Escambia County Fire Rescue has added the second red bulb to the Keep the Wreath Green wreath in 2025 following a residential structure fire Saturday morning. Escambia County Fire Rescue responded to a residential structure fire at approximately 2:44 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6 on North L Street in Pensacola. Firefighters arrived on scene to find heavy smoke coming from the single-story residence, quickly entering the home and locating the fire in the kitchen. Through rapid and aggressive fire fighting efforts, ECFR crews brought the fire under control by 3:08 a.m. There were no injuries, but the significant damage displaced the occupants. ECFR investigated and determined that damaged electrical wiring within the kitchen walls
caused the fire. The Pensacola Fire Department assisted in the response. Each time firefighters respond to a residential or commercial fire with damage, a green light bulb will be replaced with a red one to remind citizens of the dangers posed by fires in residential and commercial buildings. Sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, the Tree City USA program recognizes cities, counties and military bases that conduct a continuously active tree management program. The Tree City USA program is designed to promote greener and healthier communities at a national level. KEISER (FLA.) CLAIMS 2025 NAIA WOMEN’S SOCCER NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN PENSACOLA The Keiser Seahawks captured the 2025 NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship, defeating the Cumberlands Patriots (Ky.) via penalty kicks after a 1–1 draw over regulation and two overtime periods. The match, held at the Ashton Brosnaham Soccer Complex in Pensacola, ended tied 1–1 before Keiser prevailed 3–2 in the shootout to secure the national title. Cumberlands struck first just 3:18 into the match when Carola Fontan headed in a cross from Nicole Araujo to give the Patriots an early 1–0 lead. In the second half, Keiser responded in the 71st minute, as Blanca Bächi fired a strike from the left side of the box into the upper
right corner — assisted by Ruby Vernon — tying the game 1–1 and sending it to overtime. After 110 minutes of play (plus two overtime periods), the match remained deadlocked, forcing a penalty‐kick tiebreaker. In the shootout, Keiser converted three of their spot kicks, while goalkeeper Madison Priebe made the final save to secure the championship for the Seahawks. With the victory, Keiser improves to 19-3-2 on the season and claims its third NAIA National Championship — the program’s first since 2020. In this 42nd annual competition, the top 16 women’s soccer teams will compete for the championship title at Ashton Brosnaham Soccer Complex in Pensacola, Florida.
NAS PENSACOLA MWR CHILD AND YOUTH PROGRAM, PETTY OFFICERS HOST LOCAL CHILDREN FOR HOLIDAY EVENT The Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola First Class Petty Officer Association (FCPOA) and the installation’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) department’s Child and Youth Programs (CYP) welcomed area schoolchildren for a Dec. 8 holiday event onboard the installation. “As a Pensacola native, it means a lot to be able to help out in the local community,” said NAS Pensacola Navy Security Forces Departmental Lead Petty Officer (LPO) Master-at Arms 1st Class Drue Patrick, who also serves as the NAS Pensacola FCPOA president. “The Navy has such a huge impact and role in this community, and for us to be able to bring a little bit of joy during the holidays is something you just can’t put a price on.” Pensacola-area children from Global, Navy Point and West Pensacola elementary schools made holiday themed arts and crafts, had lunch and received presents from Santa Claus while interacting with Sailors stationed at NAS Pensacola. “I think there is a symbiotic relationship between NAS Pensacola and the surrounding communities. Pensacola provides all kinds of opportunities for our families to be engaged, and the education is outstanding here,” said NAS Pensacola MWR CYP School Liaison Hannah McCarthy. “This event, which has

CONGRESSMAN PATRONIS ISSUES A LETTER TO THE UNITED STATES COAST GUARD TO ADDRESS THE SAFETY OF DESTIN’S EAST PASS Today, Congressman Patronis issues a letter to the United States Coast Guard to address the safety and security of the Destin East Pass. The lights on markers Three and Four in Destin’s East Pass have been broken since 2021 in the sole inlet that connects the Gulf of America to the Destin Harbor. "Ensuring the safety and security of the people of Northwest Florida has always been my mission,” said Congressman Patronis. “The broken navigational lights on Markers Three and Four in Destin’s East Pass pose an unacceptable risk in a busy boating channel in America. With accidents on the rise and thousands of vessels depending on this inlet, the Coast Guard must act immediately to restore these critical aids to navigation and to protect lives, property, and our local economy. The people of Northwest Florida deserve a resolution, and I intend to get them one." FULL LETTER BELOW. Dear Admiral Lunday: I am proud to support the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and all that it means for rebuilding the United States Coast Guard (USCG), including the more than $4 billion provided for shore facilities like those located in East Pass. I am writing to express my concerns regarding the lights on markers Three and Four in Destin’s East Pass that have been broken since at least 2021 in the sole inlet that connects the Gulf of America (GOA) to Destin Harbor. These deficiencies pose serious safety and economic risks to Destin’s gateway to the GOA, which sees extensive vessel traffic. Destin’s Harbor, along East Pass, saw daily entry and exits of more than 1,500 vessels on
weekdays and more than 2,000 vessels on weekends. For perspective, the busiest port in the Western hemisphere, the Port of Los Angeles, handled only 1,807 vessel arrivals during calendar year 2024, and the Port of Mobile handled only 312 vessels in calendar year 2022. Beyond the more than 29,000 saltwater fishing licenses issued to addresses in Okaloosa County, countywide tourism generates $3.3 billion in direct visitor spending and supports 51,000 jobs. I am alarmed that, when adjusting the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s 2024 accident data for population, the accident rate in Okaloosa County was 530% more than Miami-Dade County, which had the largest number of accidents. Unfortunately, the number of accidents near East Pass increased by 100% from 2021 to 2024 and approximately 70% of reported accidents in Okaloosa County occurred near East Pass. Therefore, “to aid navigation and to prevent disasters, collisions, and wrecks of vessels” and to “serve the needs … of the commerce of the United States” under 14 U.S.C. § 541, the USCG should immediately replace markers Three and Four. While I appreciate the USCG’s interim efforts in recent months, a large vessel recently collided with the East Jetty despite these measures. Due to the condition of these ATONs, I understand full restoration will require replacement of both ATONs. UWF ANNOUNCES FIRST RHODES SCHOLAR FINALIST The University of West Florida announced its first-ever Rhodes Scholar finalist, marking a historic milestone for the institution. The Rhodes Scholarship is the world’s oldest and most prestigious international fellowship, and this achievement coincides with the launch of the John W. Merting Family Office of National Fellowships. Established through a $500,000 gift from the Merting family, the new office provides students with the guidance, resources and support needed to pursue elite fellowship opportunities such as the Rhodes Scholarship. Ambrea Hobbs, UWF’s finalist in the Rhodes Scholarship, competed at the highest academic levels with the hopes of receiving a fully funded postgraduate study at the University of Oxford. Rhodes scholars receive funding for tuition, an annual living stipend, paid travel expenses and covered visas and health fees. Each year, only a few U.S. students are selected as nominees, and Hobbs, a history and legal studies prelaw senior, joined by Itamar Blau, a mathematics and culture, health and society premed senior, were recognized as the first UWF students to be nominated. “Ambrea was sent to me by one of our academic advisors, April Kocher, because she knew Ambrea had something special and thought that I might be able to help guide her,” said Claire Holderman, coordinator of the John W. Merting Family Office of National Fellowships. “Within the first few minutes of meeting her, I knew that Ambrea would be our first Rhodes nominee. Although she wasn’t fully aware of what the Rhodes Scholarship was, when she found out that she could continue her studies at Oxford University through this fully funded scholarship, she jumped at the opportunity.” After her nomination, Hobbs advanced as one of the fourteen Rhodes finalists for District 7, moving into the highly competitive interview phase of the selection process. She traveled to Birmingham, Alabama, where she interviewed alongside top candidates from institutions across the country, including the University of Pennsylvania and University of North Carolina. While she was not ultimately
selected for the scholarship, Hobbs says she is honored and grateful to have been named a Rhodes finalist. “I am honored to have had the opportunity to represent the University of West Florida on such a prestigious stage,” said Hobbs. “Further, I am endlessly grateful for and amazed by the outpouring of support I received from UWF, its faculty and our community in preparation for my application. Though I was not selected for the Rhodes Scholarship, the application process taught me quite a bit about myself.
