BAPTIST HOSPITAL FIRST IN AREA TO OFFER INTENSIVE CARDIAC REHABILITATION
Recovery from a serious heart event can feel overwhelming. To return to a maximum level of heart health, cardiac rehabilitation has long been the standard protocol for healing and regaining strength. Baptist Hospital is the first in Northwest Florida to offer an elevated level intensive cardiac rehabilitation through a partnership with Pritikin ICR™.
While traditional cardiac rehab places significant emphasis on exercise, the Pritikin ICR™ program uses a comprehensive approach that also incorporates the roles of healthy eating and a positive mindset. The Medicareapproved, evidence-based program highlights education and gives patients double the number of rehab sessions – up from 36 to 72. The program helps individuals who have experienced serious heart events reduce their risk factors by building healthy habits and learning practical skills that promote long-term health.
Patients who have suffered from one of seven cardiovascular events are eligible to enroll in the program, which is covered by Medicare and most insurance plans. Qualifying events include heart attack, coronary artery bypass, heart valve repair or replacement,
angioplasty and stents, heart/lung transplant, heart failure and angina/chest pain.
“We are thrilled to offer this comprehensive program that aligns our current cardiovascular services and our vision to offer a holistic approach to care,” said Beau Pollard, Baptist Hospital Administrator “In addition to medically supervised exercise, patients will receive guidance from our team of experts in the fields of medicine, exercise, nutrition and mental health.”
Education sessions cover heart-healthy eating; recognizing and reducing stress; understanding medications and the importance of compliance; tobacco cessation; biomechanical limitations; the importance of a healthy mindset; healthy sleep techniques; and many other topics. The goal is for patients to have the tools they can use in everyday life to help them reduce their risk of heart disease and other chronic diseases, such as diabetes.
The Baptist Hospital Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Department is located in the Bear Family Foundation Health Center at 125 Baptist Way in Pensacola. To learn more, visit ebaptisthealthcare.org or call 448.227.6220.

ESCAMBIA COUNTY EMS ACHIEVES
PEDIATRIC READY GOLD TIER RECOGNITION
Escambia County EMS is proud to become one of only seven EMS service providers in Florida recognized as a Florida PEDReady Gold Tier agency for pediatric readiness, representing the highest level an organization can attain. This prestigious designation is awarded by the Florida Emergency Medical Services for Children State Partnership Program, highlighting Escambia County EMS’ dedication to providing the highest standard of emergency care for children.
The Florida Prehospital Pediatric Readiness Recognition Program recognizes EMS and fire rescue agencies that demonstrate a strong commitment to enhancing pediatric emergency care, education and disaster preparedness.
The Florida Prehospital PRRP is composed of two tiers: Florida PEDReady Silver and Florida PEDReady Gold. Each tier has defined criteria that agencies must meet in order to achieve recognition. The recognition process involves a review of the agency’s application and supporting documentation, as well as a verification visit.
“Receiving the highest honor for pediatric readiness is a recognition we take tremendous pride in," said Escambia County Medical Director Dr. Benjamin Abo. "The men and women of Escambia County EMS train extensively in providing superior care to our youngest and most vulnerable patients. This recognition validates the rigorous training, protocols, and teamwork our EMS professionals demonstrate every day, and we’re proud to set the bar for pediatric emergency readiness throughout the state.”
In the prehospital setting, an average of 80% of EMS agencies see fewer than eight children per month. The infrequency of pediatric calls makes it challenging for prehospital professionals to develop and maintain pediatric care competencies. PRRPs are statewide initiatives designed to recognize EMS and fire-rescue agencies for meeting specific standards in pediatric emergency care. By participating in recognition programs, EMS
agencies can demonstrate their commitment to pediatric readiness, which has been associated with a lower mortality risk for children seeking emergency care.
To remain pediatric-ready, Escambia County EMS ambulances are always equipped with honey, which can be used to slow down the harmful impacts a button battery, an item that can be easily swallowed by a child, can have on the esophagus. Escambia County produced a video that demonstrates the harmful effects a button battery can have on soft tissue. The video can be viewed on YouTube.
“Achieving Gold Tier status as a Pediatric Ready EMS agency is a tremendous honor and a reflection of our team’s unwavering commitment to providing the highest standard of care to our community’s children," EMS Chief Chris Watts said. "This recognition affirms that our training, equipment and treatment guidelines are aligned with the best practices in pediatric emergency care. We are proud to lead with excellence and continue advancing the safety and wellbeing of our youngest patients.”
The Florida Prehospital PRRP is based on national consensus recommendations from the EMSC Innovation and Improvement Center (EIIC) National PRRPs Collaborative, the 2020 Joint Policy Statement: Pediatric Readiness in Emergency Medical Services Systems, and other established state recognition programs. The Florida Prehospital PRRP was developed in collaboration with the Florida EMSC Advisory Committee, Florida EMSC EMS Pediatric Readiness Workgroup, Florida Association of EMS Medical Directors, Florida Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Oversight, Regional Coordinators, Florida EMS Medical Director, and other state organizations.

ESCAMBIA COUNTY EMS ENHANCES CRITICAL LIFESAVING CARE
Escambia County EMS has taken a major step forward in prehospital care by equipping every paramedic unit with state-of-the-art video laryngoscopes, reinforcing the department’s commitment to providing cuttingedge, life-saving care for the community.
The new video laryngoscopes represent a significant advancement in airway management, giving paramedics enhanced visualization during intubation—especially in difficult or high-risk situations. This technology is expected to improve patient outcomes, increase procedural success rates, and enhance training opportunities for EMS personnel.
“Paramedics in Escambia County already operate at a high clinical level,” Escambia County Medical Director Dr. Benjamin Abo said. “By adding video laryngoscopy, we’re giving them the tools to be even more effective, especially in complex airway emergencies.”
