THE 52 WORLD

Maya Angelou once said that people will forget what you said , and people will forget what you did, but they will not forget how you made them feel. According to Tamara Bowens, president and chief operating officer of The Dawson Company d.b.a Inspired Communities of Florida, this notion perfectly captures the essence behind the concept of The 52 World—Pensacola’s first conscious-living community.

The 52 World is an amenityrich, mixed-use development spanning 52 acres, with 26 acres dedicated to nature preserves. It offers three distinct living options: Inspire Apartments, Thrive Lofts and Evolve Townhomes, providing a unique living experience for every stage of life.

The Dawson Company recently developed 210 new luxury townhomes as part of the mixed-use development project, which are now available to rent. The property also features 350 apartments and 108 lofts located off West 9 Mile Road in Pensacola.

The 52 World is redefining residential living in Pensacola by artfully merging design and public art through its innovative Living Art Museum. This initiative not only elevates the experience of residents and visitors with world-class art but also establishes a versatile living model. By incorporating exceptional art within the framework a rental residential community, The Dawson Company is committed to making fine art a fundamental component of its properties.

“This decision was made by [The Dawson Company] CEO, Harold Dawson, Jr., who wanted to build a community versus just a place to live,” Bowens explained. “That’s how we initially came up with the three concepts.”

Thrive Lofts offers a unique and funky living experience. Inspire Apartments, located in the middle of the property, houses the largest of The 52 World’s indoor museums and provides a more traditional approach to living. Evolve Townhomes offers more space in the form of two-to-four-bedroom, two-story homes geared toward growing families.

The community blends exceptional architecture with artistic elements and natural surroundings, creating a tranquil sanctuary. Key features of The 52 World include modern amenities designed for inspirational living, such as co-working spaces, two luxury resort-style swimming pools and two massive gyms—one is a threelevel gym, and one is a sizable singlelevel space that has all the latest and greatest technology-centered workout equipment. The 52 World also boasts a meditation room, walking trails, reflection ponds and two dog parks—one for large dogs and one for small ones. The community includes abundant retail space in a soon-to-open gourmet grocery store, fuel station, PJ’s Coffee and Montessori Kids Universe Early Childhood Educational Center.

The 52 World’s Living Art Museum features more than 20 pieces of investment-grade art from world-renowned artists throughout the property.

The Living Art Museum acts as a cultural hub and offers unique programming that makes art accessible to both residents and the public.“Our company was built on the principle of doing well by doing good, and so when we develop, we always leave a gift for the residents, and the gift we wanted to leave here was art,” Bowens stated. “When we started finding iconic pieces of art to put on the property, we realized we have a lot of space here, and so we just kept buying and buying, and before you knew it, it turned into a museum.”

Bowens emphasizes that the Living Art Museum and the fine art displayed throughout the development provide a sanctuary for the soul, fostering a positive and uplifting environment essential for promoting mental well-being across all socioeconomic backgrounds.

“We wanted to provide an opportunity for our residents to pause and reflect, and what better way to do that than with art?” Bowens explained. “We wanted to have something out there that the residents can be one with—be at peace with—allowing them to lay down their stresses of the day and be out on the property, enjoying the beauty of the art that’s situated all over the 52 acres of the property.”

The 52 World is located on West Nine Mile Road across from the Navy Federal Credit Union’s main Pensacola campus. Based on the expansion happening in the area and market research, The Dawson Group knew the Ensley area would be the ideal place for The 52 World. Being right off of Interstate 10, the location is central for residents commuting to

Alabama, the core of Pensacola, or the beaches. With its plentiful retail space and on-site amenities, The 52 World provides a self-contained community where residents have all the basics and essentials they need.

“It’s not just a place to live—it’s a place to get to know your neighbors, and the art is core to that,” Bowens said. “Art sparks a conversation because it’s up to the eye of the beholder—what one person sees is different to what another person sees and interprets. It’s been a great way for us to start conversations among our residents.”

The Dawson Company envisioned a community where art is integral to the daily experience of each resident—where culture, nature and community intertwine to create a haven of inspiration. Bowens explained that post-pandemic, when people were isolated and alone, people wanted community and to know their neighbors. Now that the pandemic is over, people still want the same thing. No one wants to feel isolated anymore, and The 52 World offers that much-needed connection with art and luxury amenities.

In this development, The Dawson Company also hopes to convey conscious living—being present with neighbors and cognizant and appreciative of the world.

“If a resident wants to clear their head, we have walking trails, reflection ponds and meditation rooms, all so they can find their way to be at peace with nature,” Bowens elaborated. “One of our big things is this marriage of humanity in nature and being able to be at peace and have The 52 World as a sanctuary from the outside world.”

Pensacola's cultural landscape is flourishing, and The 52 World Living Art Museum adds a transformative element to the area's creative identity, appealing to art lovers locally and nationwide. With plans for artist residencies, community workshops and educational programming, The 52 World’s Living Art Museum is committed to cultivating an immersive environment that inspires current residents and visitors alike, while also nurturing future generations of artists. These upcoming projects will provide hands-on experiences and intimate encounters with art, aiming to enhance Pensacola's reputation as a dynamic cultural hub and foster connections that bring people closer through the shared language of creativity.

Every third Thursday of the month, The 52 World offers tours to the public led by docents hired from the University of West Florida. The tours will explore who the artists are, the names of the artworks and what the inspiration was—providing not only a gift to The 52 World residents but also to the greater Pensacola area.

The 52 World presents an extraordinary opportunity for residents and the public alike to witness a bold new approach to art in residential design. It is more than an outdoor museum or a residential space—it is a living, breathing testament to the power of creativity in shaping the spaces we inhabit, with the hope of connecting people with art, nature and each other.

GULF

WINDS RAISES OVER $78,000 AT CHARITABLE GOLF TOURNAMENT

On Monday, April 14, the Gulf Winds Foundation proudly hosted its second annual charitable golf tournament, Chip in Fore Charity, at Stonebrook Golf Course in Pace, FL. The day brought the credit union community together for a fun-filled experience of golfing, networking, and giving, raising over $78,000 for the Gulf Winds Foundation and its charitable activities.

A full roster of teams competed in a classic four-player scramble featuring a $10,000 hole-in-one challenge and several on-course games. Among the participants, Clay Mallard, Billy Burch, Dale Wright, and Louie Roberson claimed the first-place title, followed by David Feliciano, Colby Scruggs and Kyle Mitchell in second place, and Tony Silva, Chris Munro, Jonathan Smith, and Bryon Cobb in third.

Funds raised from the tournament will support Gulf Winds Annual Scholarship Program and several local nonprofit partners including Manna Food Pantry, Council on Aging of West Florida, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida, Rally Foundation, and other organizations that create sustainable change in the region.

Kerri Smayda, Associate Executive Director of Manna Food Pantry, spoke during the award ceremony about the event’s impact and said, “I want you to know that while you were out on the links, you put food on someone’s table. There are children, senior citizens, and veterans right here in our Northwest Florida community

that struggle every day to put food on the table for themselves, and their families. We couldn’t do what we do without the support of our partners, and your play today made our work possible along with so many other non-profits in the panhandle.”

The tournament was made possible through the generosity of sponsors, including the presenting sponsor, Visa, and other exclusive sponsors including Greenhut Construction, Pensacola Honda, the Pensacola Ice Flyers Foundation, Reedmark Advisors – a Solenture Company, Allied Solutions, Route 66 Extended Warranty, Sorenson Van Leuven, Fiserv, Experian, Warren Averett, CreditSnap, BKJ Architecture, Internetwork Engineering, Pensacola World Ford, and Audi Pensacola.

PENSACOLA MESS HALL HOSTS ILLUMINATE: SPACE EXHIBIT

Pensacola students are bringing the cosmos to life through glowing works of art at the MESS Hall’s latest exhibit, 'Illuminate: Space.' This immersive exhibit was created in partnership with art teachers at St. Paul Catholic School, Global Learning Academy, and Jacqueline Harris Preparatory Academy and showcases student art focused on the solar system and beyond. Additional art from students participating in the MESS Hall’s Science Explorers After School program is also featured.

Funded by NASA’s Universe of Learning, the MESS Hall first engaged students in understanding the properties of light, demonstrating how scientists use light to study the universe. Art teachers were then provided with resources developed by NASA to engage students in understanding various aspects of space exploration.

Over 500 students participated in the program. Students were introduced to the properties of light, including reflection and refraction. Additionally, they learned about the different wavelengths of light, both as color mixing in the visible range as well as infrared light, ultraviolet light, and more. Students learned how data from different wavelengths provide enhanced information

about the universe. They also learned about how life on earth adapts to extreme ecosystems from frozen tundras to pitch-black caves, and considered how those adaptations inform the search for life on other planets. These activities culminated in the creation of artistic representations. Building on the study of the properties of light, the art was created using fluorescent paint that glows with ultraviolet light.

Admission is included with general entry and includes glowing hands-on activities. The exhibit will be available through May 17. A special free viewing will happen as part of Night on the Tracks on May 10 between 6-8 PM. Night on the Tracks is a multi-venue event series along the railroad tracks in the artsy, gritty Old East Hill neighborhood.

About the Mess Hall

Founded in 2012, the Pensacola MESS Hall is not a typical science museum. It’s all hands-on science. Visitors to the facility enjoy exploring math, engineering, science, and stuff with an ever-changing menu of mess kits, activities and exhibits. Additionally, the MESS Hall serves the community with outreach programs, field trips, and other events. For more information about the MESS Hall, visit pensacolamesshall.org.

ESCAMBIA COUNTY FIRE RESCUE ENCOURAGES WILDLAND FIRE

Escambia County Fire Rescue encourages residents to be prepared when wildland fires occur. Wildland fires are most common during summer months, when conditions are typically dry and hot. In the past 10 years, extreme weather conditions have contributed to larger and more intense wildfires. Weather conditions combined with other factors significantly increases the probability of larger wildfires.

“Residents should prepare now before peak fire season by creating a defensible space, hardening their home, and improving their home’s chance of surviving a wildfire,” Escambia County Deputy Fire Chief Paul Williams said. “Residents should also have driveways designed and capable to allow emergency vehicles access, wide enough and free of low hanging overhead obstacles, gates that open inwards, and their address clearly visible from the road. Taking steps to reduce your home’s exposure during a wildfire can help save your home as well as your neighbor’s home. Hardening your home from fires is just as important as hardening your home for hurricanes.”

ECFR encourages residents to learn more about Ready, Set, Go!, an action plan

designed to help residents prepare for wildfires through advanced planning. By taking proactive steps, such as creating a defensible space, hardening homes, and developing family evacuation plans, residents become an essential part of the community’s defense against wildfires.

“I fully support the Ready, Set, Go! Program and its mission to educate and empower our community in the face of wildland fire threats,” Escambia County Fire Chief Adam Harrison said. “The safety of our residents is our top priority, and preparation is key to saving lives and property. "While we train and prepare for these types of fires we also work and coordinate with other emergency services partners like the Florida Forest Service to mitigate these incidents. I strongly encourage all members of our community to learn more about the Ready, Set, Go! Program and take action today. Together, through preparedness, we can protect what matters most.”

For more information about the Ready, Set, Go! program, visit the International Association of Fire Chiefs’ website or the address wildlandfiresrsg.org.

2024 RESIDENT SATISFACTION SURVEY RESULTS RELEASED

The City of Pensacola has released the results of its 2024 Resident Satisfaction Survey, conducted by the University of West Florida’s Haas Center. 1,504 city residents completed the online survey. The city continues its effort to gauge satisfaction with various city services and determine residents’ top priorities for their city. This data will be used to identify budget priorities and improvement areas to provide residents with high-quality services.

“This survey provides valuable insights that will help guide city priorities and decisionmaking. I have been clear that I appreciate the data surveys like this give us. Hearing directly from our residents allows us to improve public services, and ensures Pensacola remains a great place to live, work and visit,” Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves said.

The survey reveals that 70% of respondents believe the city is moving in the right direction, an increase from 67% in 2023. Pensacola residents continue to value their city’s waterfront access, arts and cultural events, and overall sense of safety.

Additional survey highlights include:

• City Initiatives: Residents strongly supported transformational initiatives such as the American Magic sailing program (69% favorable), transforming the Baptist Hospital Legacy Campus (54% favorable), and reimagining Palafox Street (52% favorable).

• Parking & Transportation: 81% of residents indicated they would take advantage of a discounted parking permit for city residents. 88% said they would prefer building a new parking garage through parking revenues instead of going out to bond such a project.

City Services: Pensacola’s fire services received outstanding customer satisfac-

tion, with 98% favorable rating. Police services followed with a 65% favorable rating.

• Customer Service: Pensacola International Airport's "favorables" were at 78%. The Port of Pensacola was at 71% and Pensacola Energy was at 68%. Sanitation Services had a 63% favorable rating, which is 24 points higher than 2023. 311 was at a 53% favorable in 2024, compared to 42% in 2023 and Public Works jumped 20 points, from 4% in 2023 to 24% in 2024.

• Economic Growth: Residents identified hospitality/tourism (26%) and aviation/ aerospace (23%) as key industries for economic expansion.

• Areas for Improvement include:

• Affordable Housing: 56% of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with affordability efforts, highlighting the need for enhanced strategies.

• Neighborhood Coordination: 39% of respondents felt there was insufficient progress in addressing neighborhood needs.

• Gun Safety: Gun safety remains a top safety concern of 42% of those who responded, but that number has dropped 10 points from 2023.

“I thank the residents for their honesty,” Mayor Reeves said. “I also commend the UWF Haas Center for their work in gathering this information and putting it in a clear and concise report. The leadership team here with the City of Pensacola is already using the data to make necessary improvements to make our city even better.”

The 2024 Resident Satisfaction Survey was conducted from December 9, 2024, through January 17, 2025.

“I’m excited to work with Andy on the future of the Waste Services Department,” County Administrator Wes Moreno said. “He brings a wealth of experience to the table which will be beneficial as we continue to grow our operations. ESCAMBIA COUNTY AWARDED URBAN AND COMMUNITY FORESTRY GRANT FOR COMMUNITY EDUCATION

Escambia County’s Natural Resources Conservation Division was recently awarded a $4,400 grant from the Florida Forest Service Urban and Community Forest Grant to fund installation of interpretive signage at the Southwest Escambia Sports Complex and new educational outreach materials. The new signs will be installed along the boardwalk connecting the baseball and softball fields and will provide education about the benefits of urban forests.

The Southwest Escambia Sports Complex features 17 athletic fields, a playground, and a community park with over 100 acres of urban forest. Staff routinely treat invasive species including cogongrass and recently completed a forestry mulching

project to reduce fuel loads and open up the understory. These measures improve habitat and reduce wildlife risk to help protect nearby neighborhoods.

“This project is the first step in educating residents and visitors about the importance of urban forests and the many ways they benefit our residents,” Natural Resource Conservation Division Manager Adam Parden said. “We have plans to expand public access to the preserve in the future and look forward to continuing this initiative for Escambia County.”

For more information about the project, contact the Natural Resource Conservation Division at nrc@myescambia.com or 850-494-7594.

ESCAMBIA COUNTY EMS PUTS ON SHOWCASE DURING OPEN HOUSE

The community enjoyed a behind-thescenes look at Escambia County EMS on Saturday, April 12 during the EMS Open House. Community members, families and friends gathered at the Escambia County Public Safety building as Escambia County EMS showcased their vehicles, equipment, lifesaving abilities and more. As a bonus, attendees were treated to free chili as employees competed in a chili cook-off.

During the open house, Escambia County EMS employees set up interactive displays to demonstrate to attendees their vast knowledge and skills. Interactive demonstrations included CPR training, Stop-the-Bleed techniques, how to intubate a patient, power-load stretcher displays, LUCAS device displays, performing the Heimlich maneuver, and operating a mechanical ventilator.

Attendees had the opportunity to tour ambulances, support vehicles, the AmbuBus, and a LifeFlight helicopter during the event. The open house also featured an Easter egg hunt outside of the Public Safety building, adding an extra level of enjoyment for children and their families.

“I am very pleased with the result of our open house,” Escambia County EMS Chief Chris Watts said. “The goal was not only to showcase EMS, but also to engage with our fellow neighbors and those we serve every day. Our team did a phenomenal job demonstrating our capabilities while providing education to our community, all while having fun in the process. We look forward to hosting this event for many years to come.”

The EMS open house not only featured impressive ambulances, state-of-the-art medical equipment, and a fun Easter egg hunt, but EMS employees displayed their competitive culinary skills during the EMS Employee Chili Cook-Off, where attendees sampled five different chilis prepared by EMS employees and Escambia County Administrator Wes Moreno. While each chili presented unique

and delicious flavors, EMS Deputy Chief Chris Stephens took home the top prize in both the Judges and People’s Choice categories.

District 3 Commissioner Lumon May and District 4 Commissioner Ashlee Hofberger attended the open house and had the opportunity to visit with county staff and learn more about EMS.

“It was so wonderful seeing our community gather together to support our EMS,” District 3 Commissioner Lumon May said.

“To see so many people come out to and learn more about what the men and women of Escambia County EMS do for our community speaks highly of their impact on those they serve. I was impressed by what I learned from our EMTs and paramedics and I’m so grateful for their commitment to serving the residents and visitors of Escambia County.”

“Our Escambia County EMS team truly shined this past Saturday,” District 4 Commissioner Ashlee Hofberger said. “My family and I had the opportunity to attend their community showcase, and we were impressed by the incredible vehicles, equipment, and life-saving resources on display. It was a fantastic reminder of the critical role EMS plays in keeping our residents and visitors safe. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the leadership and staff of Escambia County EMS for their dedication and professionalism. Events like this not only highlight their capabilities but also help build strong, informed connections with the community.”

Escambia County Emergency Medical Services, a division of the Escambia County Department of Public Safety, is a provider of critical care, advanced life support, basic life support and bariatric transports. EMS provides these services to the over 300,000 residents of Escambia County.

DISTRICT 5 RESIDENT RECEIVES NEW HOME THROUGH COUNTY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

For Escambia County District 5 resident Luverne Bonner, the dream of having a brand-new home to call her own once seemed out of reach.

Now, that dream is a reality thanks to Escambia County assistance programs, which provided Bonner with a new home that she and her family can enjoy for years to come.

After living in her previous home for over 25 years, Bonner said she experienced numerous issues with the house that became unmanageable and overwhelming, including electrical problems, major leaks, roof and flooring issues, and more.

In need of help, she applied for the Escambia County Neighborhood and Human Services Department’s Housing Demo and Replacement Program, which demolishes deteriorating houses and replaces them with brand-new houses for income-eligible residents in need. The program is funded through a grant from the State Housing Initiatives Partnership, or SHIP, program.

"It is incredibly rewarding to see lives changed for the better through county programs like this, which help greatly improve the quality of life for residents in need of a helping hand in our community," District 5 Commissioner Steven Barry said. "Thank you to our county staff for their hard work to make this possible, and congratulations to Ms. Bonner and her family on this exciting new chapter. I wish you many happy memories together in your new home.”

Bonner was joined by county staff, family and friends for a ribbon cutting to celebrate her official move-in day on Friday, April 4, when she received the keys to her new home.

Bonner said the new home is lifechanging for her, especially since she will now have a clean, safe space to host her children, grandchildren, and other family members.

“It means everything to me,” Bonner said. “With the old house, I really couldn’t have my kids or grandkids come stay with me. If they did, they couldn’t stay long, and I didn’t feel comfortable with them being here, because there was so much work to be done in the house.”

When her old home deteriorated to a point where she couldn’t safely live there anymore, Bonner said she was incredibly grateful to have a place to stay with her daughter until her new home was constructed. Without the assistance from Escambia County, Bonner said she would not have been able to move forward with making repairs or replacing her home.

“Now I can just be comfortable,” Bonner said. “I can just relax and not worry about things. It’s amazing – I just don’t have the words. I really, really appreciate it so much.”

Additional assistance may be available for income-eligible homeowners in Escambia County. Limited funding is available, but eligible residents in need of assistance are encouraged to reach out for more details. For information about eligibility requirements and assistance programs for Escambia County homeowners, please contact the Neighborhood Enterprise Division at ned@myescambia.com or 850-595-1642.

I’m thankful to my family, our EMS leadership, our staff, and the citizens of Escambia County for their belief and encouragement. I look forward to continue moving Escambia County EMS in a positive direction."

As a Paramedic Supervisor, Watley manages an entire shift of ambulances and guides dozens of paramedics and emergency medical technicians, providing the necessary coordination and support that allows them to be successful.

Watley's commitment to providing the best possible service and care for residents is displayed in the constant collaboration with the Emergency Communications Division leadership to maintain workflow and in his efforts to promote active relationships with local healthcare entities.

"Supervisor Watley has been an integral piece of our EMS team," Escambia County

EMS Chief Chris Watts said. "Nick always goes above and beyond, takes initiative, always accomplishes the mission regardless of the tasks and obstacles before him, and has a heart of gold. He is the guy who will give you the shirt off his back and works harder and longer without complaint. Nick has a drive and a passion for serving the community. He is humble and does not ask for recognition, but deserves to be recognized for his hard work and personal sacrifices to serve our community."

Watley's most notable recent accomplishment was during the January 2025 winter storm when he actively managed his crews while cut off from any support for a significant period of time. He even pulled or towed ambulances out of ditches and up icy roads.

His remarkable efforts demonstrated his commitment to the safety of the citizens of Escambia County. His determination to pull or tow vehicles resulted in rescuing multiple citizens who would have otherwise been stranded during the coldest weather experienced in decades.

“Every day, EMS strives to provide the best service for the citizens and visitors of Escambia County, and having leaders like Nick Watley on our team allows us to continue to move the needle forward," Public Safety Director Eric Gilmore said. "This is well-deserved recognition for Nick, and reflects the growth, leadership and excellence found at Escambia County EMS.”
