CITY OF PENSACOLA TO LAUNCH NEW ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM

The City of Pensacola recently announced the establishment of its inaugural Artist in Residence program.

Set to launch in late 2025, the Artist in Residence program is an initiative that was designed to support local artists while helping to enrich the city’s cultural landscape.

The city has enlisted the help of local business owner, artist and arts advocate Daniela de Castro, who will spearhead the city-based program bringing her artistry, experience and steadfast commitment to helping shape and develop our local artist community.

“I am honored to be part of this exciting initiative and look forward

to building a program that will create opportunities for artists who will bring new energy and perspectives to Pensacola,” de Castro said. “This residency will serve as a catalyst for artistic exploration and community engagement, further solidifying the city’s role as a thriving center for the arts.”

As a large-scale conceptual artist, de Castro is widely recognized for her vibrant murals, which can be found on buildings and walls throughout the city, including the stunning mural painted on Hellcat Hangar located off Navy Boulevard.

De Castro has a prolific career as a large-scale muralist and multimedia artist, as well as a background in program development.

She studied classic oil painting as a teenager, graduated with a bach -

elor’s in graphic design in 2019 and began painting murals professionally in 2017. She has painted walls in Spain, Venezuela, England and the United States.

In 2024, de Castro expanded her large-scale art business and rebranded as Daniela de Castro Studio. Her studio brings together artists and experts in their field to create conceptual art installations that are closely tied to the brands and the spaces they inhabit.

Over the years, de Castro has also worked with numerous local institutions to create dynamic platforms for contemporary artists.

De Castro was one of five artists selected to participate in the 2024 Pensacola Mural Fest, which featured a series of five murals painted on

businesses along the Barrancas corridor in downtown

The Artist in Residence program will provide selected artists with dedicated space, resources and community engagement opportunities to create and showcase their work.

“We are thrilled to launch this program as part of our commitment to strengthening the arts in Pensacola,” Mayor D.C. Reeves said. “Having someone as talented and visionary as Daniela de Castro at the helm ensures that this program will not only support artists but also inspire our community and elevate Pensacola’s reputation as a cultural hub.”

The city says the new program aims to foster artistic innovation, connect artists with Pensacola’s diverse communities and institutions,

and highlight the city as a premier destination for creative expression.

The new Artist in Residence Program is set to launch later this year, with details on the official application process, selection criteria and residency opportunities to be announced later this year as well.

The City of Pensacola has created a video to help introduce members of the community to de Castro, which can be viewed online at bit.ly/AboutdeCastro. MANNA’S 2025 CLOVER PICK A BOWL FILL A BOWL RAISES NEARLY

$69,000 TO FEED THE HUNGRY

The 2025 Clover Pick A Bowl Fill A Bowl raised nearly $69,000 for Manna Food Bank thanks to the generosity of several local sponsors, artists, restaurants/food vendors, donors, and event attendees. Money raised from the event will provide the equivalent of 41,400 healthy meals for hungry neighbors in need in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.

“This event is Manna’s largest fundraiser of the year and provides critical financial support for our organization,” said DeDe Flounlacker, Executive Director of Manna. “Potters, sponsors, food vendors, volunteers, and event guests have raised the bar again, making this year’s event an overwhelming success! Their generous support makes it possible for Manna to continue providing healthy food to children, senior citizens, veterans, families, and individuals in need right here in our community.”

The event was made possible by the faculty, students, and friends of the Pensacola State College Visual Arts Department, First City Arts Center, local artists, businesses, and vendors that provided sponsorships and donations of art, food, beverages, and other in-kind goods and services. ADX Communications, Margie and Alan Moore, Jewelers Trade Shop, and WEAR 3 were the 2025 Porcelain level sponsors.

This year’s restaurants and food vendors included Apple Market, Azalea Trace/ACTS, Betty’s on Belmont, Bodacious Café, Classic City Catering, The District, The Farm, The Grand Marlin, Mr. Pollo Pensacola, Nouveau

Pastries & Catering, Pensacola Yacht Club, Steel Pony Diner, Tacos El Fluffy, The Ticket, and WEAR 3 – Bob Solarski. Vendors brought their A-game to compete for the event’s People’s Choice Award. Event guests were able to sample food offered by each vendor and cast their votes through cash donations to Manna. At the conclusion of the event, Chef Matthew with the Farm was presented with a one-of-akind handmade award bowl for winning the 2025 Clover Pick A Bowl Fill A Bowl People’s Choice Award for their Almost Famous Black Garlic Smoked Gouda Mushroom Soup. ADX Communications, Animal Tales, Alpha-Lit Marquee Letters, Appleyard Duncan McCall, Evergreen Printing and Mailing, First City Art Center, The Lewis Bear Company, LocaliQ, Merchants Paper Company, Pensacola State College Visual Arts Department, Republic National Distributing Company, Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits, and WEAR 3 were the 2025 in-kind sponsors.

In 2018, the annual event was renamed in honor and memory of longtime supporter Bill Clover. Clover, a Pensacola State College Visual Arts professor for 52 years, was instrumental in starting and sustaining the 18-year event that has raised money to help thousands of hungry people.

“Clover was instrumental in starting this event for Manna and continuing its success all these years. Naming the event after him is our small way of honoring Clover for his love of our community and a way of celebrating his legacy for years to come,” said Flounlacker.

The McGarey Group brings its extensive expertise in epic mixed-use developments, providing strategic advisory services throughout the planning, development and leasing phases. The Group’s goal in working with The Dawson Company is to ensure that Maritime Park becomes the epicenter of Pensacola living and a timeless community asset.

“I am looking at the future itself in this collaboration with The Dawson Company. From the start, I was impressed with the prevailing theme that there will be no small ideas and that this legacy asset will rise the tide of Pensacola living. Maritime Park will be a reflection of the regional Pensacola community it supports and will add a vibrancy and energy that the City deserves and is ready to embrace,” President and CEO of The McGarey Group Denver McGarey said.

The Dawson Company is spearheading the broader Maritime Park development, which aims to redefine Downtown Pensacola. A key element of this effort includes the REVERB by Hard Rock, a modern hotel that

“Maritime Park is more than a development; it’s a commitment to Pensacola’s future and a reflection of its vibrant community spirit. We envision this project as an economic hub that enhances quality of life and creates a welcoming space for residents and visitors alike,” President and COO of The Dawson Company Tamara Bowens said.

With its headquarters recently relocated to Pensacola, The Dawson Company has a long-standing reputation for pioneering landmark mixed-use developments in cities like Atlanta, Cincinnati, Baltimore, and now Pensacola. From young families stopping in for play and storytime, to students sketching out their next creative project in a makerspace, to seniors seeking tech help and everyone in between, libraries of all kinds help us connect the dots from one part of our journey to the next. Chart your next literary adventure by browsing the stacks or joining a book club. Make your mark and get involved with your library by volunteering or spreading the word.

Whatever draws you in, the library has something for everyone. Celebrate National Library Week, Apr. 6 – 12.
