FOR THE LOVE OF BOOKS LOCAL BOOK CLUBS TO JOIN THIS SPRING
By Bella Shields
Book clubs are a great way to make real-world connections centered on a shared passion for reading and fictional worlds. Here in Pensacola, there are plenty of opportunities for book lovers to connect with each other and find community. From traditional book clubs with assigned titles each month to casual gatherings for general book lovers and genre-specific groups tailored to particular reading tastes, there’s a club for anyone looking to connect with fellow readers in the area. If you’re still on the hunt for a bookish friend circle, you might want to consider giving any of these local options a try!
West Florida Public Library
Book Clubs
The West Florida Public Library (WFPL) hosts a number of active book clubs throughout the year, but two of our favorites offer something a little different for local readers. The Popular Literary Book Club is open to members ages 18 and up and follows a traditional book club format, with a new title selected each month for the group to read and discuss together. Meetings are held at the Pensacola Library at 239 N. Spring St. in downtown Pensacola on the third Wednesday of every month at 10:30 am. April’s featured book is My Friends by Fredrik Backman, a heartfelt story exploring the life-altering bonds of friendship.
Another WFPL library-based book club targeted to a slightly
different demographic is the Graphic Novel Book Club. Open to members ages 15 and up, the club also meets at the Pensacola Library. The group meets on the last Monday of each month at 5 pm, and rather than assigning a specific title, participants are invited to bring a favorite graphic novel to share and discuss. To learn more about these and other WFPL Book Clubs, visit mywfpl.com.
WUWF Book Club
This book club was established in 2019 by local listener-supported radio station WUWF-FM. Six years later, the club is still running strong, growing to include a membership base of 300 people. Every other month, members vote in the group’s private Facebook group on a new book to read. The Facebook group also acts as a discussion hub where members can talk about the books they’ve read and other book-related topics, helping build a sense of community among readers. Members are encouraged to chat about group-assigned books, recommend their own favorites and use the group as a space to share their love of books with each other. The club meets virtually and typically hosts in-person gatherings at various locations throughout Pensacola, though in-person meetings are currently on hold. The WUWF Book Club is open to everyone, and membership is free. If you’re interested in becoming a part of it, check out WUWF Book Club on Facebook.
Barnes & Noble Book Club
The Barnes & Noble Book Club is a nationwide program featuring
monthly fiction selections, often with exclusive, in-store editions, special content and discussions held at store cafes. Designed for engaging and enthusiastic readers, it encourages community discussion, frequently highlighting new, thought-provoking contemporary literature. Meetings are held in Barnes & Noble cafes on the last Tuesday of the month or other scheduled times, usually led by booksellers.
Each month, the club assigns a new book, which is highlighted at the front of the store. In March, the book selection was Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney’s Lake Effect, a drama set in the 1970s about a scandalous affair between neighbors. Each month, members are invited to participate in group discussions in-store or online using the hashtag #BNBookClub. For details on the latest book selection and upcoming in-store meetings, visit barnesandnoble.com and check the event calendar at your local Barnes & Noble store.
Read Pensacola Book Club
This independently run book club for readers ages 18 and up is made up of four different genrebased groups that meet throughout the month. If you’re hoping to find a book club that matches your reading tastes, this group offers plenty of options. Each subgroup focuses on a different genre and meets during a specific week of the month.
The Literary Fiction group meets on the first Tuesday of every month, and has recently focused on reads
like Girl Dinner by Olivie Blake, The Women of Wild Hill by Kirsten Miller and The Book of Lost Hours by Hayley Gelfuso. The Romance group meets the third Tuesday of the month, and has recently enjoyed titles like An Academic Affair by Jodi McAlister and the ever-popular Heated Rivalry by Rachel Reid. The Fantasy Club readers meet on the fourth Tuesday and recently discussed Alex Harlow’s The Everlasting. Finally, the Horror Club meets every three months on the fifth Tuesday, with past selections including titles like Mayra by Nicky Gonzalez and The Library at Hellebore by Cassandra Khaw. To stay updatedon meetings and upcoming reading lists, follow @readpensacola on Instagram.
UWF Silent Book Club If traditional book discussions aren’t your style, the University of West Florida’s (UWF) Silent Book Club offers a relaxed alternative where readers can simply enjoy a good book in quiet company. Hosted at the University of West Florida, this book club is open to current students, faculty and staff who want a low-pressure way to make time for reading. Instead of a structured discussion, attendees bring their own book and spend the meeting enjoying quiet, independent reading alongside other book lovers. Snacks are often provided, and the goal of this group is to serve as a getaway to unwind, destress and pause your hectic schedule to dive into a book. Meetings take place on the third floor of John C.
Pace Library. The group does not follow a fixed monthly schedule, so sessions are planned individually in advance. Two meetings are scheduled during the spring semester, with hopes of expanding to more regular gatherings in the future. To see upcoming meeting dates, check the UWF Library Calendar of Events at uwf.edu/library.
Books & Bubbly
One of Pensacola’s most social book clubs, Books & Bubbly blends great reads with meaningful conversation and a welcoming community of local women. Launched in 2018 as part of the women’s community group, Positively Pensacola, the club was created to help women connect through books, thoughtful discussion and new friendships. The group meets once a month for relaxed, conversation-driven gatherings where members discuss a selected book while enjoying light refreshments—often with a celebratory glass of bubbly. Rather than focusing on traditional literary analysis, conversations center on books written by women, stories of women’s empowerment and topics that inspire meaningful dialogue about life, relationships and personal growth. Meetups are casual and welcoming, making it easy for newcomers to join whether they’re devoted readers or simply looking to meet new people in the community. Readers interested in joining can stay up to date on meeting dates and sign-up details by following Positively Pensacola on Facebook and Instagram. ■

ESCAMBIA COUNTY EMS CORE PROGRAM CELEBRATES 600TH PATIENT MILESTONE
Escambia County Emergency Medical Services is proud to announce a significant achievement in its Coordinated Opioid Recovery Effort program. The CORE program has successfully assisted its 600th patient, reaching a major milestone in its mission to combat the opioid crisis and provide comprehensive care to individuals battling opioid addiction.
CORE is a state-funded addiction recovery program that expanded to Escambia County in late 2022, with the county accepting its first CORE patient in February 2023. Since its inception, the CORE program has worked diligently to offer personalized, non-judgmental support to individuals suffering from opioid use disorder. This program focuses on providing immediate medical care, counseling, and long-term recovery support to help patients through the recovery process.
“When we started CORE in Escambia County, we could not have envisioned the incredible impact it would have on so many lives,” said Joey Kerman, Supervisor of the Escambia County EMS CORE Program. “There was no roadmap, but our mission was clear from day one: To help people find recovery and to empower them to become the heroes of their own stories. We asked people in their darkest moments to take a chance on us, to believe that there was something more waiting for them beyond the pain. Over 600 patients said yes and placed their trust in us. In return, they’ve given us something far greater than we could have ever expected. They’ve given us purpose. They’ve given us hope. And they’ve inspired us every single day to keep going, to keep fighting, and to reach the next person
THE
who feels like they’re beyond saving. Today, we don’t just recognize a number. We celebrate lives changed. We celebrate courage. We celebrate resilience.”
The CORE program combines EMS response with community resources, including addiction counseling, mental health support, and recovery services, to give patients the tools and services they need to overcome addiction. By intervening at critical moments and connecting individuals with resources, CORE helps to break the cycle of addiction and offers a pathway to recovery.
“I am incredibly proud of our CORE team for reaching another significant milestone for the program,” Escambia County EMS Chief Chris Watts said. “The data clearly demonstrates the profound impact this program is having, with measurable success in saving lives and improving outcomes for those affected by opioid use disorder. Every patient who makes it through this program represents not just a life changed, but a life potentially saved. Our CORE team truly cares about the patients we serve, and I am confident they will continue making a meaningful, life-saving difference as we work together to address the opioid crisis in our community.”
The CORE program is made possible by community partnerships including Community Health Northwest Florida and Lakeview Center.
As the CORE program continues to grow, Escambia County EMS remains committed to providing compassionate care and essential support for individuals affected by opioid addiction. The 600th patient milestone is just one step in the ongoing effort to combat the opioid crisis and improve public health in Escambia County.

Cmdr. Logan R. Peck will succeed Capt. Adam Bryan and assume command following the end of the 2026 show season in November. Applicants are required to have a minimum number of flight hours and be in current command, or have had past command, of a tactical jet squadron.
“It’s an incredible honor to take on this role and represent the men and women of this team,” said Cmdr. Peck. “Every day, I’m focused on leading in a way that reflects that responsibility, and making sure we continue to perform at the highest level.”
Peck, a native of San Diego, California joins the Blue Angels after serving as the commanding officer of the “Fighting Checkmates” of VFA-211 His previous assignments include multiple squadron tours, where he deployed aboard USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) in support of Operation FREEDOM’S SENTINEL. Peck holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas and Baker Univer-
sity. Peck has more than 2,400 flight hours and more than 500 carrier arrested landings. His decorations include multiple unit and personal awards.

NAVY SHORE BOSS VISITS REGION SOUTHEAST BASES
Vice Adm. Scott Gray, Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC), visited several installations in Navy Region Southeast to assess the Shore Enterprise's ability to support the fleet, Sailors, and families.
Gray’s tour through the region included stops at Naval Construction Battalion Center (NCBC) Gulfport, Naval Air Station (NAS) Pensacola, NAS Whiting Field and Naval Support Activity (NSA) Panama City.
“Every installation is a critical warfighting platform, directly enabling fleet readiness and lethality,” said Gray. “Visiting our bases and meeting with the leaders and Sailors on the ground postures the Shore Enterprise to meet global challenges. Our installations are run by professionals who understand their essential role in providing readiness and support to the warfighter.”
At each installation, Gray met with base leadership to discuss local issues and Navywide initiatives. The visits included inspections of critical infrastructure and quality of service facilities. These assessments are part of a broader effort to ensure the Shore enterprise is fully aligned with fleet requirements and focused on delivering the infrastructure and services warfighters depend on. At NCBC Gulfport, Gray got a preview of the new galley experience, which will introduce rotating ethnic cuisine stations to offer more food choices. The galley is also receiving an interior redesign, featuring a new Liberty Corner with a comfortable lounge space where Sailors can relax and connect. The updated galley experience is a pilot program in the Navy’s food service transformation initiative, which improves food quality and turns galleys into places where Sailors want to gather.
During his visit to NAS Pensacola, Vice Adm. Gray toured the unaccompanied housing barracks and emphasized the Navy's commitment to providing safe and modern living conditions for all Sailors. At NSA Panama City, he visited family housing and the child development center.
“From the barracks I saw at NAS Pensacola to the child development center at NSA Panama City, it’s clear that the strength of our Navy in the Southeast is directly tied to the well-being of our people,” said Gray. “Taking care of our Sailors and their families isn't just a priority; it's a warfighting imperative.”
While at NAS Whiting Field, Gray recognized the installation’s outstanding performance by presenting the commanding officer Capt. Ted Elkins with the 2026 CNIC Installation Excellence Award for the small installation category. The base had also received the inaugural 2025 Shore Battle “E” Award. The Installation Excellence Award recognizes overall outstanding performance consistent with Shore Enterprise strategic goals, while the Shore Battle “E” is an operational award that recognizes installations for their excellence in generating and supporting combat capabilities.
“Earning both the Installation Excellence Award and the Shore Battle 'E' is a testament to the incredible team we have here at Whiting Field,” said Elkins. “From enabling over 1.3 million flight operations to training 100 percent of all Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard helicopter pilots, our team consistently delivers. Their dedication is what allows us to produce nearly 600 new aviators for the fleet annually while also leading the way in resource management and community partnership. I couldn't be prouder of the work they do every single day.”
Commander, Navy Installations Command is responsible for worldwide U.S. Navy Shore installation management, designing and developing integrated solutions for sustainment and development of Navy shore infrastructure as well as quality of life programs. CNIC oversees 10 Navy regions, 70 installations, and more than 48,600 employees who are focused on warfighting and manning, training and equipping the Shore to fight and win. Navy installations are warfighting platforms essential to every fleet operation.

The City of Pensacola approved a donation agreement with Community Health Northwest Florida to ensure healthcare services remain available nearby for the neighbors of the former Baptist Hospital site.
The building at 801 W. Avery St. — once part of the Baptist Hospital campus — was donated to the nonprofit Community Health Northwest Florida Foundation and will be used by Community Health for much-needed dental and Adult & Family Care services.
"Community Health is honored that Mayor Reeves and the City Council see the value in our organization, and the importance of keeping healthcare accessible to the neighbors of the former Baptist Hospital facility," says Community Health Northwest Florida CEO Chandra Smiley. "We have a lot of work ahead of us still, and we're excited to get going."
Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves said the partnership is an important piece of the neighborhood’s future.
“As the City has undertaken the work to reimagine the Baptist campus and the area around it, residents have made it clear that access to community-based healthcare is one of their priorities,” Reeves said. “This collaboration with Community Health is a critical piece of keeping our commitment to make sure that what ultimately comes to the neighborhood keeps the people who live there at its heart.”
The donation agreement requires Community Health Northwest Florida to spend at least $850,000 in renovations within its first year of ownership and to use the building for full-time medical and dental services for at least 15 years.
Community Health has received a generous donation from Covenant Care to aid with the renovation costs. Community Health will announce a grand opening after extensive renovation plans are completed.
The building gives Community Health four dental facilities, joining its practices at 1295 W. Fairfield Drive (inside the Florida Department of Health building); Cantonment Pediatrics at 470 South U.S. 29, Unit B; and its Milton office at 6671 Caroline St. Community Health also operates two mobile dental units that bring care as needed. This donation also marks Community Health's sixth Adult & Family Care facility, joining its Jackson Street main site; at North Palafox Street; in Century; at the Milton site; and at the Waterfront Rescue Mission. Community Health also operates a mobile medical unit that takes healthcare on the road year-round.

PENAIR CREDIT UNION KICKS OFF 90TH ANNIVERSARY BY INVESTING FORWARD WITH HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
As PenAir Credit Union (PenAir) marks 90 years of service, the organization is celebrating the milestone not by looking back, but by investing in the future of the community it has called home for nearly a century.
Earlier this week, PenAir joined Pensacola Habitat for Humanity and community leaders to break ground on Hancock Meadows, a new 33-home affordable housing neighborhood in Escambia County. As part of the groundbreaking, PenAir announced a $120,000 contribution supporting both a community greenspace and the sponsorship of a Habitat home; investments that reflect the credit union’s long-standing commitment to building strong, connected communities.
“This year marks a very meaningful milestone for PenAir, our 90th anniversary,” said Delbert Lee Morgan, President and CEO of PenAir Credit Union. “As we reflected on how to celebrate, we knew we didn’t want to simply look back. We wanted to invest forward in something that strengthens families and brings people together.”
The Hancock Meadows development, located off Hancock Lane, will include 33 homes designed to serve working and lowto moderate-income families, with six homes reserved for military members and their families. The neighborhood is expected to feature multiple homeownership models and shared community spaces that encourage connection and long-term stability.
PenAir’s contribution will fund two cornerstone elements of the neighborhood: a central greenspace intended to serve as a place for neighbors to gather and connect,
and a sponsored Habitat home that will initially serve as a model for the development before ultimately being purchased by a Habitat family.
“For 90 years, PenAir has existed for one reason, to serve people and strengthen the communities we call home,” Morgan said.
“Homes are essential, but community is what turns a neighborhood into a place people are proud to belong. This investment honors our past while helping shape a stronger future.”
The project also holds special significance for PenAir given the credit union’s deep roots in serving military families. Founded to support both military and civilian communities, PenAir has long prioritized initiatives that provide stability and opportunity to those who serve.
“Supporting military families has always been part of who we are,” Morgan added.
“We’re proud that this neighborhood will offer military families a place to put down roots and build long-term security.”
Pensacola Habitat for Humanity leaders noted that Hancock Meadows represents one of the organization’s largest neighborhood projects in recent years and comes at a critical time as housing affordability challenges continue across Escambia County.
As PenAir celebrates its 90th year, the credit union plans to continue highlighting partnerships and initiatives that reflect its core values of Respect, Service and Communerosity®, and its purpose of enhancing lives.
“Our anniversary isn’t just about longevity,” Morgan said. “It’s a reaffirmation of our commitment to show up today, tomorrow and for generations to come.”

SANTA ROSA COUNTY BREAKS GROUND ON MILTON INTERCHANGE PARK WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT
Wednesday, April 8, Santa Rosa County celebrated the groundbreaking for the Milton Interchange Park Wastewater Treatment Plant - an important step forward in delivering critical infrastructure improvements to the East Milton area.
“Today marks a new beginning for Santa Rosa County as we step outside our comfort zone and take charge of our future," said Commissioner Kerry Smith, District 2. "For years, wastewater capacity has been a limiting factor to growth and economic opportunity in East Milton and across our county. By taking action, we have not only solved a critical infrastructure challenge but also opened the door to new jobs, new businesses, and a stronger local economy. This project represents more than pipes and pumps—it is a commitment to investing in our people, our environment, and the prosperity of future generations. It truly is a great day for East Milton and Santa Rosa County.”
This new on-site facility will support the growing Milton Interchange Park with advanced wastewater treatment capabilities. Originally designed as a 250,000-gallon-per-
day plant, the project has been expanded to a 500,000-gallon-per-day startup capacity.
The upgraded design will:
• Produce reclaimed water for irrigation and industrial use within the park
• Route any unused reclaimed water to an on-site infiltration wetland
• Incorporate a geosynthetic liner to help absorb PFAS
“The construction of this facility represents the vision and proactive mindset of Santa Rosa County and the Board of Commissioners," said Commissioner Colten Wright, Chairman and District 5. "Having our own wastewater treatment plant will support continued economic growth and help bring quality jobs to our community. This project also demonstrates our commitment to the most environmentally friendly technology and sets a new standard for wastewater management in the Florida Panhandle.”
Design services were provided by Jacobs Engineering, with construction awarded to Wharton-Smith. The Milton Interchange Park enterprise fund is paying the $30.2 million project loan. The design cost was $988,650, paid from the general fund.

PENSACOLA OPERA ANNOUNCES 44TH
SEASON OF SHOWS
Pensacola Opera has announced its 44th Season for 2026–27, a dynamic lineup that opens in November with the chamber opera The Falling and the Rising by composer Zach Redler. Mainstage productions follow in January and March with Puccini’s Tosca and Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love, both at the historic Pensacola Saenger Theatre.
Opening the season is The Falling and the Rising, an operatic story of service and sacrifice, tracing the inner journey of a soldier who enters a coma after she suffers from a roadside attack. This special production will feature a local voluntary veterans chorus that spans decades of service to our beloved country, as a moving testament to the courage of those who serve. This chamber opera will take place at the University of West Florida Center for Fine and Performing Arts, November 20 + 21, 2026.
The mainstage season opens in January with Tosca, a timeless masterpiece about passion, revenge, and sacrifice. Returning to Pensacola after showstopping debuts in Pagliacci (2025), Amber Monroe and Ben Gulley reunite as Floria Tosca and her lover, the painter Mario Cavaradossi. Dennis Jesse— most recently seen as Germont in last season’s La traviata—appears as Baron Scarpia, the villainous chief of police. Jerome Shannon conducts. Tosca’s chilling story line and soaring arias reveal the depth of human emotion that will give you chills and leave you feeling hauntingly tender. Tosca will be performed at the Saenger Theatre on January 22 & 24, 2027.
The bubbly comedy The Elixir of Love returns to the Saenger stage for the first
time in over 20 years on March 12 & 14, 2027. Jan Miller Studio Artist alumnus Randy Ho returns as the love-stricken Nemorino, and Helen Zhibing Huang makes her Pensacola Opera debut as his beloved Adina. The pompous Sergeant Belcore is Luis Alejandro Orozco ( Carmen , 2021), and Matthew Burns (The Barber of Seville, 2022) plays the smooth-talking “Doctor” Dulcamara. Music Director Cody Martin conducts a production led by Eve Summer in her Pensacola Opera debut. Donizetti’s heartwarming comedy is a whimsical, uplifting finale to a season full of contrast and emotion.
Both mainstage productions will feature members of the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra and Pensacola Opera Chorus. Pensacola Opera will once again bring over 200 musicians and artists together to present a season of shows that showcase all sides of human emotion and provide experiences for all to enjoy.
“Pensacola Opera’s 44th Season promises to be one of enduring tradition, celebrating the full range of human emotion, and we cannot wait to share another extraordinary year of opera with the community.” says Chandra McKern, General Director.
Subscriptions are currently available for the 44th Season.

AMERICAN MAGIC SELLS KEY AMERICA’S CUP ASSETS TO AMERICAN RACING
CHALLENGER TEAM USA
American Magic today confirmed that American Racing Challenger Team USA has acquired key America’s Cup sailing assets from the team, including the AC75 yacht Patriot and two AC40 platforms. These assets will anchor American Racing Challenger Team USA’s campaign for the 38th America’s Cup, scheduled for Naples, Italy, in the spring of 2027.
American Magic Services, based at the American Magic High Performance Center at the Port of Pensacola, will support American Racing Challenger Team USA’s challenge while continuing to deliver advanced engineering, manufacturing, and systems integration capabilities for other customers across high-performance marine, aerospace, and defense applications.
The program will use the Pensacola base for race boat modifications and on-water testing, further strengthening the region's position as a fast-growing, premier global hub for high-performance sailing, advanced manufacturing, and innovation.
“This is another strong step forward for American Magic Services,” said Tyson Lamond, Chief Operating Officer at American Magic. “It is important to see an American team competing on the America’s Cup stage, and we are proud to support American Racing Challenger Team USA as they prepare for the 38th America’s Cup. This program brings additional activity to Pensacola and reflects the capability and momentum we are building at the American Magic High Performance Center as we continue to build our portfolio.”
Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves noted that the announcement is good news for the American Magic team -- and for their investment in Pensacola.
“We are so excited to have our city involved once again in training for the America’s Cup, the oldest trophy in sports, and to root on our American Magic teammates in Italy next year,” Reeves said. “We continue to push our city aggressively to new heights in the sport. Today, with SailGP, the America’s Cup and world-renowned maritime manufacturing, it is clear that Pensacola is the epicenter of elite sailing in the United States.”
The AMHPC at the Port is the hub for the team’s composite manufacturing and engineering expertise to be applied to advanced manufacturing, marine technologies, and aerospace projects.
It also serves as the North American training base for SailGP teams. Beginning in September 2026, the Pensacola facility will provide SailGP teams with access to worldclass on-water and shore-based training infrastructure, supporting year-round preparation, technical development and athlete performance.
Based in Pensacola, Florida, American Magic Services specializes in high-performance engineering, systems design, and composite manufacturing. Initially established to meet the competitive demands of the America’s Cup, American Magic Services now provides innovative solutions for the marine, aerospace and defense industries.
NEW RESTROOM FACILITY COMING TO ROGER SCOTT POOL
A new restroom facility for Roger Scott Pool is on the way.
expertise while highlighting the often-overlooked issues of food insecurity and isolation among older adults,” said senior volunteer programs director Alesia Macklin. “This event celebrates their contributions while helping us raise awareness of crucial needs that these programs address.”
Granny Get-Down will run from 11 am to 2 pm. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $10 for individuals ages 55 and up. Children 12 and under may attend free of charge. Tickets are available at GrannyGetDown.org or by calling Council on Aging of West Florida at (850) 432-1475. Proceeds benefit Council on Aging’s programs supporting older adults.
About AmeriCorps Seniors: AmeriCorps Seniors engages Americans 55 and older in service opportunities across the nation, connecting them with people and organizations that need their expertise to make a difference in communities.
About Council on Aging: Council on Aging of West Florida is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that has served seniors and their families since 1972. Council on Aging of West Florida helps seniors in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties live healthy, safe and independent lives in their own familiar surroundings by providing community-based, in-home programs and services such as Meals on Wheels and Alzheimer's respite care.
The modular restroom facility is in production by vendor Public Restroom Company and scheduled for delivery in late July. Residents are likely to see site preparation work beginning there in June or July.
The restroom facility, which will cost $673,310 including site preparation work, is the lion’s share of an $840,410 investment the City has made in the Roger Scott Pool. That investment includes repairing the roof at the storage building, replacing the shade coverings at the picnic table area, refurbishing the water slide, and resurfacing the baby pool.
“City staff have been working diligently on a replacement for restrooms at Roger Scott Pool, and I’m pleased that the version we got over the finish line gets the taxpayers value for their money,” says Mayor D.C. Reeves.
The previous pool restroom building was deemed unsafe by the building inspector in 2021. Temporary facilities were put in place.
The Florida Department of Health told the City last year that the 2025 pool season would be the last that they would allow temporary restrooms at the pool due to the more stringent guidelines on permitting a temporary restroom for a commercial pool facility.
While the late-season arrival of the restroom facility from the vendor means Roger
Scott Pool will not open for this season, the Cecil Hunter Pool will open on time on Memorial Day weekend. Daily admission at Hunter Pool is $4 for adults, $3 for children ages 3-17, $3.50 for seniors (50+), and free for children age 2 and under.
City Parks and Recreation Director Tonya Byrd said that season passes to Hunter Pool will be offered at a 10 percent discount.
The 2023 iteration of the replacement restroom project was a comprehensive pool facility building that included restrooms, staff offices, storage, and other amenities and construction costs were estimated at $1.2 million. The design cost was $264,500.
In 2024, the City asked for a scaled down version of the project with a restroom-only building with future expansion options. The lowest construction bid for that version came in at $913,401 (including contingency), which again raised cost concerns. This redesign cost $169,900.
In light of those cost concerns, City staff returned to the drawing board to explore other options, leading to the modular facility that is expected to be in place in late July or early August.
“To come to this final version at a savings of nearly 26 percent off of the price tag attached to it in 2024 is a testament to the diligence of our staff,” Reeves said.
