Earth Day is sometimes overlooked as just another date on the calendar , but it serves as a powerful reminder to appreciate and protect the only planet we call home. Earth is the only planet we have and it has sustained us for so long: so why not adopt sustainable practices that help protect the planet?

This year, think beyond a single day of celebration and consider how small, sustainable choices can add up to a lasting impact. While there are plenty of Earth Day events happening around the city, there are also simple, hands-on ways to make a difference right here in our local community. From everyday habits to community involvement, these small actions can help protect the planet not just on Earth Day, but all year long.

Attend Earth Day Pensacola

Pensacola’s annual Earth Day celebration returns on April 18 from 10 am to 4 pm, bringing a full day of eco-friendly fun, education and community connection to Bayview Park in East Hill. Earth Day Pensacola held its first local event in 1970, in conjunction with the very first national Earth Day, and has grown into a beloved local tradition focused on sustainability and outdoor engagement. Blending entertainment with purpose, this family-friendly festival will feature live music, food vendors and handson activities that encourage visitors to learn simple ways to protect the environment in their everyday lives. The festival will also include a variety of education stations highlighting important topics like conservation, recycling and coastal protection. Attendees will also enjoy an artisan market with handmade goods and fresh offerings from local farmers.

Whether you’re interested in sustainability, shopping local or just enjoying a day outdoors, Earth Day Pensacola offers a meaningful and engaging way to celebrate the planet. Recycle

It’s simple, but it matters—recycling is one of the easiest ways to reduce the amount of waste headed to landfills. Transforming everyday garbage into useful items for tomorrow is a tried-and-true method of preserving our environment. Recycling extends the life of existing landfills, decreases the need for new ones and reduces greenhouse emissions. Locally, ECUA’s singlestream system makes it easy—no sorting required—but it’s important to only place accepted items in your recycling can. These include glass jars and bottles, paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, aluminum, tin and steel cans, as well as metal pots, pans and cookie sheets. For nonrecyclable items that accumulate quickly like plastic shopping bags, check with local grocery stores like Publix, as they often accept plastic bags for recycling and have receptacles outside for easy disposal.

Clean Your Block

Keep Pensacola Beautiful, now known as Our Corner, is a local organization that connects with the community through litter cleanups, recycling programs and educational outreach aimed at improving environmental quality and building community pride. One of its key programs, Clean Your Block, focuses on keeping Pensacola neighborhoods free of litter. On scheduled dates, volunteers are invited to walk a designated block, picking up trash and helping restore areas whose vbeauty has been hidden beneath waste. Litter not only harms plant and animal life, but also takes away from the natural surroundings and can lower community morale for those who see it every day. This month, Our Corner will host Clean Your Block events on April 11 from 9 to 11 am at 1301 N. 9th Ave. in Pensacola and on April 25 at Weis Elementary School. Our Corner also offers post-event cleanup services and gives residents the chance to Adopt a Spot, committing to maintain a specific area in exchange for a sign recognizing their efforts. Participate in the Mayor’s Neighborhood Cleanup

Another great initiative for focused and organized area cleanup efforts is the Mayor's Neighborhood Cleanup program. Although originally implemented as the City of Pensacola's cleanup program in the 1990s, the program was reinvented as the Mayor's Neighborhood Cleanup program in 2011, when it expanded to include all city neighborhoods with an annual cleanup between January and October. The next cleanup day is expected to take place in late April, when Sanitation Services employees will collect materials placed curbside. This service is provided without charge, just be sure to place items curbside before 7 am on the scheduled cleanup day. Items eligible for removal include household appliances, electronics, furniture and mattresses, carpeting, barbecue grills (without propane tanks), bicycles, toys, tires, old paint and paint cans. Just remember to keep tires and paint cans separate from other debris and do not place cleanup piles under low-hanging lines or near poles, fences or mailboxes. Cultivate Native Plants

If you’ve ever thought about starting a garden, or simply doing some landscaping around your yard, Native Plant Company is a fantastic resource for ensuring you’re choosing plants that are native to the area. Many popular plants chosen for gardens or backyards may look nice, but are actually invasive species. If you want to support the local ecosystem, it would be much better to choose native plants, as doing so promotes biodiversity and also means less effort for you to maintain the health of your plants, as they will have less difficulty growing in their native soil and climate than a plant from somewhere else would. On their website, Native Plant Company has extensive information and resources on local flora, providing education on different kinds of plants, tips to aid beginners in growing successfully and guides on what plants would be

beneficial for what purposes. The company is passionate about helping people contribute to facilitating and nurturing the natural ecosystem that existed in this area before it was industrialized, in addition to educational resources and providing the opportunity for individuals to directly order specific plants through their website. Practice Meatless Monday Another way you can contribute to environmental awareness is participating in the Meatless Monday movement. Even if you’re not morally opposed to eating meat, there are plenty of health and environmental benefits to avoiding meat for even just one day out of seven. Choosing to take a break from meat can be good for improving blood pressure and cholesterol levels, as meat contains a lot of saturated fat. In addition, the choice to turn from meat means intentionally focusing on other options, such as fruits and vegetables, which can be easy to exclude from your diet. There are plenty of nutrients present in fruits and vegetables that simply cannot be gotten through meat, so a whole day of focusing on these foods can help to rebalance the vitamins in your body. Environmentally, avoiding meat decreases your carbon footprint. Unfortunately for those of us who love a good steak, the meat industry is not one that is kind to our environment, and cutting down on our participation in it is truly best in the long run. If you’re looking for good food places where you can still enjoy a filling meal while staying away from meat, try out Pensacola’s Chickpea House. Everything on the menu is vegetarian with vegan alternatives for each item. They offer plenty of tasty vegan and vegetarian options, especially the hummus, that will be sure to fully satisfy–no meat required.

Shop Sustainably Shopping can create a surprising amount of waste, both visible and behind the scenes. On the consumer side, single-use plastic grocery bags are a common culprit, often piling up in landfills, drifting into the ocean or blowing across roads like tumble-

weeds. Less visible, but equally impactful, is the environmental impact of fast fashion, where rapidly produced clothing contributes heavily to greenhouse gas emissions, water overuse and microplastics in our oceans. You can help reduce this impact by shopping more intentionally and choosing sustainable alternatives. Avoid supporting fast-fashion brands by visiting locally owned thrift shops like Loaves and Fishes or exploring downtown boutiques such as Colette and Hemline Pensacola, which offer more sustainably sourced, ecofriendly clothing options. To cut down on personal waste, consider using reusable tote bags instead of disposable ones, or participate in programs that allow you to bring your own containers when purchasing bulk or liquid items. Ever’man Cooperative Grocery & Cafe is a local favorite offering organic foods, fresh local produce and sustainable initiatives that encourage customers to bring their own bags and purchase returnable milk and honey jars to keep materials in circulation. A straightforward way to strengthen the environment is to simply plant a tree. However, while in theory it might seem like a simple thing to do, the process can be intimidating to undertake with no guidance. An excellent resource to turn to is the UF/IFAS extension gardening solutions website, which offers a list of native trees with sizes ranging from the small-to-medium redbud and red maple to larger species like the bald cypress and live oak. On the UF/IFAS website you can find plenty of information on everything you need to know about planting a native tree. There are guides on what to consider in terms of placement when planting, advice on what type of trees to plant, detailed step-by-step instructions on the actual planting of the tree itself and tips for further care to ensure the tree continues to grow well. FRICKER RESOURCE CENTER RENOVATIONS MOVING FORWARD

The City of Pensacola’s Fricker Resource Center is set to begin renovations in the second quarter of 2026, following the Pensacola City Council’s award of contract to GreenSimmons on Thursday, March 26.

After-school and senior programs will continue in the gymnasium through the end of the current school year, with a pause in location-based programming until construction is complete. The center will reopen with services in June 2027.

Families who use the Fricker Center for after-school care are being surveyed to help staff plan after-school programming and transportation for the 2026-2027 school year while the center is under renovation. Woodland Heights and the Cobb Resource Center are the alternate sites for after-school and summer camp programs.

“We’re building more than just a facility — we’re building a space that reflects the heart

and aspirations of this community,” Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves said. “Our goal is to maintain what we already have, while improving the user experience and resiliency.”

The renovated facility will include:

• A career lab

• A senior center

• Healthcare access

• Increased weather resiliency, including expanded stormwater treatment

• Increased parking

• ADA-compliant playground updates

• Additional renovations to restrooms, entryways, the kitchen, library and more With nearly $10 million in grant funding awarded in 2023 and some Local Option Sales Tax funds, the city is preparing to launch a significant transformation of the Fricker Center into a multipurpose facility designed to serve as a dynamic neighborhood hub and true community center.

GREGORY WIGGINS SELECTED AS APRIL 2026 EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH

Escambia County is excited to recognize Gregory Wiggins, Mosquito Control Supervisor in the Mosquito Control Division of the Natural Resources Management Department, as the April 2026 Employee of the Month. Wiggins’ selection was recognized with a proclamation during the April 1 Board of County Commissioners meeting.

As the Mosquito Control Supervisor, Wiggins oversees daily operations of the county's pest control program, including planning routes, assigning personnel, and record keeping. He supervises a staff of dedicated Mosquito Control Technicians, maintaining a healthy and safe working environment and ensuring employees remain complaint with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations. Wiggins began his career with Escambia County in June 2014, gaining over a decade of knowledge and experience that have helped him ensure the Mosquito Control Division runs smoothly and efficiently.

“Greg is a shining example of what it means to be a public servant,” Natural Resources Director Chips Kirschenfeld said. “He cares deeply about the community he serves and the individuals on his team, which shows in the work he performs each day. He consistently displays professionalism, steadiness, and a positive attitude. He is truly deserving of recognition as Employee of the

Month, and we are excited to celebrate him and his achievements.”

Among his colleagues, Wiggins is celebrated for his dedicated and dependable nature. When the previous Mosquito Control supervisor retired in 2025, Wiggins stepped into the role to ensure that operations continued without interruption. He served as the Interim Division Manager from March-October 2025, overseeing all operations throughout the division. After transitioning out of the interim role back into a supervisor role, Wiggins continued to carry out managerial duties, displaying a sense of duty and commitment to the work and his team.

Throughout his career with Escambia County, Wiggins has prioritized strengthening the division’s relationships with other county departments and external partners. His proactive involvement has led to improved coordination between agencies including Escambia County Code Enforcement, the Florida Department of Health in Escambia County, and local beekeeper associations.

“The past 12 years have given me the opportunity to meet some wonderful citizens of Escambia County as well as working with some very fine Escambia County employees,” Wiggins said. “I’ve had some great leadership during this time, and I work with some amazing people. I humbly accept Employee of the Month on behalf of our entire team.”

MAYOR'S NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUP

The Mayor's Neighborhood Cleanup Program is a concentrated sweep through a selected neighborhood each month focusing on cleaning up litter and removing abandoned vehicles.

How the Program Works

The City’s Neighborhood Cleanup Program was first implemented in the 1990's as a way of providing residents with a focused and organized cleanup effort. In 2011 that program was re-invented as the Mayor’s Neighborhood Cleanup Program, when it was expanded to include all city neighborhoods with a cleanup once a year. Through the Mayor's Neighborhood Cleanup program, all city neighborhoods have a cleanup day once a year during the months of January through October. In addition to Sanitation Services collecting items left at the curb, Code Enforcement conducts a sweep of the cleanup area and addresses any code violations. When cleaning day arrives, Sanitation Services employees will collect authorized material placed curbside.

GULF COAST PRESS THE CHEST COMMUNITY CPR EVENT MAY 17

The public is invited to learn the lifesaving skill of CPR at the Gulf Coast Press the Chest Community CPR Event on Sunday, May 17, from 1-3 p.m. at the Pensacola Bay Center, 201 E. Gregory St. in Pensacola. This free, community-wide CPR training event is open to all ages and aims to empower citizens with lifesaving skills that could make the difference in an emergency.

Attendees will learn the latest recommendations and procedures from the American Heart Association, including hands-only CPR for adults, child CPR with breaths, and choking relief methods for both adults and children, as well as how to use automated external defibrillators, or AEDs. The Gulf Coast Press the Chest Community CPR Event will offer a fun, interactive environment led by local medical professionals and first responders.

The Importance of CPR CPR is an emergency life-saving procedure performed when the heart stops beating. Immediate CPR can double or triple the chances of survival after cardiac arrest, according to the American Heart Association. CPR helps keep blood flowing in the body, extending the opportunity for a successful resuscitation once trained medical staff arrive.

American Heart Association:

• More than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year in the United States.

• Less than half (46%) of bystanders will perform CPR.

• Every minute counts; survival rates without CPR decrease by 10% as each minute passes.

• More than one in three American adults (estimated 85.6 million), have more than one form of cardiovascular disease. On average, someone dies of CVD every 37 seconds in the U.S.

GOVERNMENT STREET AND B STREET INTERSECTION CLOSURE

The intersection of West Government Street and South B Street is temporarily closed to traffic as of Monday, April 13, as City of Pensacola crews install new stormwater piping across the intersection.

Residents will maintain access to their homes during construction. Drivers traveling on West Government Street, between A Street and C Street, will be detoured to West Intendencia Street. Drivers traveling on South B Street, between West Main Street and West Intendencia Street, will be detoured to A Street and C Street. The intersection closure and traffic detours are expected to end May 13, weather permitting.

SANTA ROSA COUNTY LIBRARY SYSTEM KICKS OFF 20TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

The Santa Rosa County Library System is proud to announce the launch of its 20th anniversary celebration, marking two decades of serving the community through access to information, education, and lifelong learning. The official anniversary date will be October 3, 2026, commemorating 20 years since the library system’s establishment in 2006, with celebrations at libraries throughout the county.

The Santa Rosa County Library System is introducing its 20th Anniversary Punch Card, launching which launched February 1, 2026. Patrons may receive one punch per month for each visit, with every punch bringing them closer to a grand prize drawing at our big celebration on October 3, 2026.

For a fun bonus, patrons can earn extra punches by visiting different libraries throughout the county—up to six additional punches total—improving their chances of winning. Bonus punches are awarded only when visiting a different library location. To receive a punch, patrons can simply present their card to staff at the checkout counter.

HOUSE FIRE ON ARENA ROAD RESULTS IN FATALITY

Escambia County Fire Rescue responded to a residential structure fire in the 1600 block of Arena Road on Monday, April 6, which tragically resulted in the death of one individual and two pets.

At approximately 8 p.m., Escambia County Emergency Communications received a call about a residential structure fire with one person trapped inside. ECFR crews arrived on scene to find heavy flames and smoke showing from the single-story home. Despite a rapid response and aggressive firefighting

efforts by ECFR, one individual was found deceased inside the home, along with one dog and one cat.

The fire was brought under control by approximately 8:40 p.m. Due to significant damage, the home is a total loss.

Escambia County EMS, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, and Florida Power and Light also provided assistance during the response. The incident is under investigation by the Florida Bureau of Fire, Arson and Explosives.

BLUE WAHOOS ANNOUNCE 2026 PRELIMINARY OPENING DAY ROSTER

The Pensacola Blue Wahoos announced Thursday their preliminary Opening Day roster in advance of the 2026 season.

The 28-man roster features 16 players who have previously played for the Blue Wahoos, including last season’s team batting average leader Ryan Ignoffo and team strikeouts leader Jacob Miller.

The Blue Wahoos will feature five players on MLB Pipeline’s list of the Top 30 Marlins prospects, including right-handed pitcher and Opening Day starter Karson Milbrandt (#10), outfielder Dillon Lewis (#11), infielder Cristian Hernández (#16), outfielder Brendan Jones (#19) and outfielder Fenwick Trimble (#20).

Five players – Lewis, Hernández, Jones, infielder Dylan Jasso and left-handed pitcher Kade Bragg – will be making their Marlins organizational debuts after joining the club via trade over the offseason.

HIRES TANNER SMITH AS MEN’S BASKETBALL

HEAD COACH

The University of West Florida has hired Tanner Smith as its men’s basketball head coach, UWF Associate Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Dave Scott announced Tuesday.

“I couldn’t be more excited to welcome Tanner Smith as our new men’s basketball coach,” Scott said. “We are in a pivotal moment in the history of UWF Athletics, and I’m confident Tanner will lead this program to new heights. He’s a high character man who will build lasting relationships with his studentathletes and the community while developing a high-caliber team on the court. It’s an exciting time for Argos basketball.”

Smith arrives in Pensacola after spending the past two seasons at Appalachian State, where he served as associate head coach and played a key role in one of the most successful stretches in program history. During his time at App State, Smith helped lead the Mountaineers to 26 conference wins and back-to-back 10-win seasons in Sun Belt play, the program’s first such stretch since 2010–11.

In 2023–24, he was part of a staff that led App State to a program-record 27 wins, an outright regular-season championship and its first National Invitation Tournament appearance since 2006–07.

Smith played a critical role in developing one of the top defenses in the conference, as the Mountaineers led the Sun Belt in scoring defense in each of his two seasons. The team also ranked among the nation’s top 50 in multiple defensive categories, including field goal percentage defense and three-point percentage defense.

“What stood out to me first about the University of West Florida was its people,” Smith said. “The competitive, family-oriented atmosphere that resonates throughout campus is something truly special and not found everywhere. I’m excited to get to work identifying and developing young men who are not only talented players, but outstanding individuals who will represent the Argonaut brand with pride. My family and I are deeply grateful to President Diaz and Athletic Director Dave Scott for the opportunity to lead the historic men’s basketball program at the University of West Florida.”

Smith also played a key role in player development, helping Myles Tate earn All-Sun Belt First Team honors after finishing among the league leaders in scoring, assists and steals.

Prior to his time at App State, Smith spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Stephen F. Austin, where he helped the Lumberjacks

capture a regular-season conference championship and rank among the nation’s top teams in turnovers forced, steals and threepoint shooting. Smith’s coaching experience also includes stops at Kennesaw State, Mississippi State and Charlotte, where he began his career as director of basketball operations before being promoted to assistant coach.

A former standout guard at Clemson, Smith totaled 986 points, 459 rebounds and 320 assists during his career while helping lead the Tigers to three NCAA Tournament appearances.

Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing from Clemson University in 2012. He and his wife, Julia, have two children together.

GRAND BOULEVARD BRINGS LIVE MUSIC TO GRAND PARK EVERY THURSDAY THIS SPRING

Grand Boulevard's Bands on the BLVD Spring Music Series is underway, and there is plenty of season left to enjoy it. The weekly open-air concert series brings live music to the heart of Grand Park every Thursday through April 16, 6-8 p.m., offering laid-back evenings under the stars, perfect for friends, families, and music lovers.

LEARN, PREPARE, PROTECT: FREE DISASTER SERVICES EXPO BRINGS FAMILY FRIENDLY PREPAREDNESS TO AREA

Information provided by the Be Ready Alliance Coordinating for Emergencies (BRACE) Families across Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties are invited to spend a Sunday afternoon learning, exploring, and connecting at the free Disaster Services Expo on April 26, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bayview Community Center, located at 2001 E. Lloyd Street in Pensacola. Hosted by Be Ready Alliance Coordinating for Emergencies (BRACE), the family-friendly event is designed to help residents learn how to prepare for disasters and become familiar with local resources before a disaster strikes.

The Disaster Services Expo brings together local Long Term Recovery partners, trusted nonprofits, government agencies, local vendors, and service providers who assist residents before and after disasters. Participating organizations include those offering housing and rebuilding assistance, legal and financial guidance, preparedness and mitigation services, recovery and support services, contractors and home hardening experts, and more.

Families will have opportunities to learn about basic first aid training, view fire extinguisher demonstrations, receive practical information on generator safety, and more. Additional activity areas will focus on household preparedness, including pet care planning, looking up flood risk by address, and signing up to receive local disaster alerts.

The Escambia County and Santa Rosa County Emergency Management offices will participate, along with a variety of emergency-related vehicles available for children to explore, including Escambia County’s mobile command post trailer, THOR, as well as other City and County emergency vehicles.

To encourage exploration throughout the Expo, children and families can participate in a passport activity by visiting each area and receiving a stamp. Those who complete their passports will have the opportunity to enter raffles for household disaster preparedness items. Food trucks will be available on site, making the Expo an easy and engaging Sunday afternoon outing for families.

The Expo also highlights coordination among recovery partners through the Disaster Services RoundTable, a collaborative network led by BRACE that brings organizations together to share resources, address challenges, and strengthen disaster readiness, response, and recovery across both counties.

“Preparedness works best when families know what resources are available and feel comfortable reaching out before a disaster happens,” said Dr. Nick Jackson, Chief Executive Officer of BRACE. “The Disaster Services Expo creates a welcoming space for residents to learn, ask questions, and connect with the organizations that serve our community.”

COMMISSIONER HOFBERGER, ESCAMBIA COUNTY TO HOST FREE CPR CLASS APRIL 15

District 4 County Commissioner Ashlee Hofberger, in partnership with Escambia County Public Safety, invites residents to attend a free community hands-only CPR class on Wednesday, April 15 at 6 p.m. The class will be held at the Tryon Library, located at 1200 Langley Ave.

This is the second community CPR class hosted by Commissioner Hofberger and Escambia County Public Safety, with the first class drawing more than 60 attendees.

This practical training will focus on hands-only CPR training from Escambia County EMS, learning a simple and effective technique that can save lives during cardiac emergencies when immediate action is critical. The class will also include education on recognizing and responding to signs of a stroke. No prior medical training is required, and the class is open to all members of the community.

According to the American Heart Association, hands-only CPR by a bystander is as effective as conventional CPR for teens and adults in the first critical minutes of cardiac arrest and can double or triple a victim’s chance of survival when performed immediately.

“Prepared communities are safer communities,” Commissioner Hofberger said. “We saw incredible turnout and engagement at our first hands-only CPR class, which speaks volumes about the heart of this community. We are thrilled to build on that momentum and continue equipping our residents with the confidence and skills to step in and make a life-saving difference when it matters most.”

The class is offered at no cost and is open to the public. However, space is limited. Attendees are asked to register for the class here. Residents are encouraged to bring family members, friends, and neighbors to help build a stronger, more prepared Escambia County.

Florida Blue Foundation, the philanthropic affiliate of the state’s Blue Cross Blue Shield plan, is committed to supporting nonprofit organizations that improve health by impacting food security, advancing mental well-being, growing healthy communities, and addressing health disparities. The Foundation is now accepting applications for 2026 grants from organizations with documented expertise in mental well-being.

The Florida Blue Foundation is committed to improving the health and well-being of families, children, individuals, and communities across Florida. Among its funding priorities for mental well-being grants, the Foundation supports innovative and effective solutions that promote whole-person health, address unmet needs, and foster a healthier and more resilient Florida.

The Foundation is looking for mental well-being programs focused on: Enhancing Access to Mental Health Services.

Access to care and treatment for mental health issues remains out of reach for most of the population in the United States even though approximately 23% of adults experience mental illness and 16% of youth experience a mental health disorder each year. 1* This funding focus aims to bridge the mental health service gap for individuals and families across Florida, addressing pressing issues such as stress, anxiety, depression, isolation, and loneliness.

Strengthening Florida’s Mental Health Workforce

Currently, 40% (137 million) of the U.S. population lives in a Mental Health Professional Shortage Area (Mental Health HPSA). 2* At a state level, Florida has a severe shortage of mental health providers, with a staggering 550-to-1 ratio of residents to mental health providers, ranking 43rd in the nation. 3* This funding focus is intended to bolster Florida's mental health workforce by building a pipeline of professionals for enhanced care while addressing the state's growing need for mental and behavioral health services. By supporting the training, skills development and/or expansion of mental health professional programs, this funding aims to support licensed and qualified professionals entering the field, enhance their skills, and ultimately improve access to high-quality care for individuals and communities across Florida.

The Florida Blue Foundation is funding approximately $3.2 million for this grant program, offering four-year grants. The total funding request for the grant period should fall within the range of $300,000 to $400,000, with an approximate annual allocation of $75,000 to $100,000.

ACE PENSACOLA ANNOUNCES RETURN OF MINI OPERATING GRANTS AND FULL

GENERAL OPERATING GRANTS FOR 2026-2027

Calling all non-profits: Art, Culture, and Entertainment Inc. (ACE) is bringing back Mini Operating Grants in April 2026. The ACE Mini Grant Program is designed to support artists, artist-led projects, and small creative collaborations through a more accessible entry point into ACE funding. The program is intended to strengthen the local arts ecosystem, encourage partnership, and create a pathway for artists and emerging projects to grow into future ACE opportunities, including the Pensacola Foo Foo Festival and other grant programs. Up to three ACE Mini Operating Grants will be awarded annually for up to $5,000 each.

Eligibility for ACE Mini Operating Grants

• Eligible applicants include individual artists, artist-led teams, small creative groups, and 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. All applicants must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization or include a partnership with a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization, which will serve as the fiscal recipient, provide oversight and accountability, sign off on the project, and receive and distribute awarded funds.

• The partnering nonprofit must be based in Escambia County. Preference will be given to projects that contribute to the local arts community. EPA CONFIRMS FUNDING FOR AMERICAN CREOSOTE WORKS

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has confirmed that $8.6 million for remediation at the former American Creosote Works Superfund site is anticipated in fiscal year 2026, allowing the agency to fully cover the estimated $48 million cost of this phase of cleanup. It is welcome news for a site that first was placed on the Superfund National Priorities List in 1983 because of contaminated soil and groundwater.

Pete Thorpe, Remedial Project Manager for the Restoration and Remedy Section of EPA Region 4, which includes Pensacola, confirmed that the anticipated $8.6 million will allow the agency to cover the cost of this phase of remediation on surrounding residential parcels and the main ACW site.

Thorpe confirmed that the EPA’s Off Site Rule group approved for the residential soil to be sent to the Escambia County landfill. Remediation work on the residential parcels near the former wood-treating facility site are expected to begin in July, according to Thorpe. “Our community has waited decades for the remediation of the ACW site,” said Mayor D.C. Reeves. “I’m grateful to everyone at EPA who has worked diligently with us to get to this point. I want residents to know that we are going to continue to advocate in Washington for this project to get the attention it deserves.”

The 18-acre ACW site is in the Sanders Beach neighborhood, bound roughly by Pine, Gimble, F and L streets. It was a wood-treating facility that operated from 1902 to 1981.

the cleanup. The EPA completed a sitewide Proposed Plan and Record of Decision (ROD) that was signed in September 2017.

Site investigations and cleanup activities have focused on three phases: Surface and below-ground soil and sediment (Phase One); Ground water (Phase Two); Off-site dioxin-impacted soil (Phase Three).

Preliminary cleanup began more than 20 years ago. In 2003, the EPA consolidated contaminated soils from nearby residential areas onto the site and installed a temporary cap. A permanent, sitewide cap has not yet been constructed.

The cost of Phase 2, which would involve thermal extraction to draw out the creosotelaced groundwater, is $68 million and is not currently funded.

The project’s complexity and scale are significant. The EPA controls the design and implementation of the remediation plan, the funding and timeline for said plan, and identifying compatible reuse of the site after remediation efforts.

The City controls zoning of the AWC site, which is zoned as “Conservation.” Once the site is remediated to a usable level and has institutional controls in place set forth by the EPA, the City could pursue design for a passive-use park for the area, which the community surrounding the ACW site has desired for years.

The adaptive reuse of the space is contingent on cleanup activities since this project has a phased approach due to funding limitations at the moment.

ATHLETICS ANNOUNCES MOVE TO NCAA DIVISION I ATHLETICS, JOINS ATLANTIC SUN CONFERENCE, UNITED ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

The University of West Florida announced in a press conference today that it will be transitioning its athletics programs to the NCAA Division I level. Beginning in Fall 2026, UWF will compete in the Atlantic Sun Conference as a full multi-sport member and the United Athletic Conference as a footballplaying member.

“Our transition to Division I marks a historic step forward for UWF and reflects the momentum, ambition and excellence that define our community,” said UWF President Manny Diaz Jr. “This milestone is about more than athletics — it represents expanded opportunities for our students, greater national visibility, and a continued commitment to providing an outstanding educational experience. I am proud of the work that has brought us to this moment and excited for the future we are building together.”

The Argonauts Athletics program has a proven record of excellence competing at the NCAA Division II level, leading the Gulf South Conference in all-time championships and all-sports trophies. The University’s 15 varsity programs have earned 11 national and 136 conference championships while competing at the NCAA Division II level. Beyond athletic success, the program fosters leadership and academic achievement, with a cumulative Spring 2025 student-athlete GPA of 3.37.

The Atlantic Sun Conference was founded in 1978 and is an NCAA Division I conference composed of eight institutions across the southeastern United States, including universities like Florida Gulf Coast University, University of North Florida and Lipscomb University.

The United Athletic Conference was established in 2023 as a single-sport football conference through a partnership between the ASUN

and the Western Athletic Conference, which will expand to a full multi-sport conference and rebrand as the UAC on July 1, 2026.

The ASUN and the WAC (UAC) announced the formation of a strategic consortium beginning July 1, 2026. The alliance will support collaborative scheduling, shared operational efficiencies and expanded competition opportunities while maintaining independent conference structures and automatic qualification to NCAA Championships.

“This addition not only strengthens both conferences, but represents yet another growth milestone for the alliance between these two leagues,” said consortium Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bacon. “Since announcing our plans nearly a year ago, the excitement around what we will unveil on July 1 has been overwhelming, and with UWF on board, we have added significant fuel to the fire. During the three-year NCAA reclassification process, UWF athletics teams will compete at the Division I level but will not be eligible for NCAA postseason tournaments. However, they will be eligible to compete for ASUN and UAC conference championships. Full NCAA postseason eligibility will begin once the transition process is complete in 2029.

The transition to Division I aligns with the University’s continued growth in enrollment, research activity and regional engagement. The move will increase the institution’s visibility and expand opportunities for student recruitment while contributing to the overall campus experience.

By fiscal year 2027-2028, with the new Darrell Gooden Stadium fully operational and Division I competition underway, UWF Athletics is expected to see increases in game day attendance and expanded operational needs, including staffing, security, concessions and event management. According to an analysis conducted by the UWF Haas Center, UWF Athletics is projected to generate approximately $42 million in economic impact and support an estimated 280 jobs across the region.

NOTICE TO CREDITORS

The administration of the estate of Patricia Earle Regan, deceased, whose date of death was January 21, 2026, is pending in the Circuit Court for Escambia County, Florida, Probate Division, the address of which is 190 W Government Street, Pensacola, Florida 32502. The names and addresses of the personal representatives and the personal representatives’ attorney are set forth below.

All creditors of the decedent and other persons having claims or demands against decedent’s estate on whom a copy of this notice is required to be served must file their claims with this court ON OR BEFORE THE LATER OF 3 MONTHS AFTER THE TIME OF THE FIRST PUBLICATION OF THIS NOTICE OR 30 DAYS AFTER THE DATE OF SERVICE OF A COPY OF THIS NOTICE ON THEM.

All other creditors of the decedent and other persons having claims or demands against decedent’s estate must file their claims with this court WITHIN 3 MONTHS AFTER THE DATE OF THE FIRST PUBLICATION OF THIS NOTICE.

The personal representative has no duty to discover whether any property held at the time of the decedent’s death by the decedent or the decedent’s surviving spouse is property to which the Florida Uniform Disposition of Community Property Rights at Death Act as described in ss. 732.216-732.228, Florida Statutes, applies, or may apply, unless a written demand is made by a creditor as specified under s. 732.2211, Florida Statutes. The written demand must be filed with the clerk.

ALL CLAIMS NOT FILED WITHIN THE TIME PERIODS SET FORTH IN FLORIDA STATUTES SECTION 733.702 WILL BE FOREVER BARRED.

NOTWITHSTANDING THE TIME PERIODS SET FORTH ABOVE, ANY CLAIM FILED TWO (2) YEARS OR MORE AFTER THE DECEDENT’S DATE OF DEATH IS BARRED.

YOU ARE HEREBY NOTIFIED that a Complaint has been filed in the above-entitled Court by Alvin D. Johnson, a/k/a Alvin Johnson, against the above-referenced Defendant in an action for a declaratory judgment pursuant to Fla. Stat. Chap. 86 confirming Plaintiff’s fee simple title to the following describe real property, and that any interest of the Defendants in said real property is extinguished, as more fully set forth in the Complaint filed in the above-styled action: Beginning at the Southwest corner of Lot 2, Section
