Greetings to all Ever’man Shoppers and Friends, This issue of The Healthy Alternative (THA) is all about co-op members and membership. We want to highlight the benefits of membership and the importance of members to the co-op. At the last count, we are happy to say we have over 11,300 active co-op members. This number continues to increase. We will continue to have member drives so that more of the community can enjoy the values membership at the co-op brings.

In mid-February, we mailed the annual survey to all current co-op members. We received just over 700 completed surveys. The Board of Directors and store operations have begun compiling the results and reviewing them. In the next few THAs you will see the results and some of your comments. We will be working to use the information you shared, to improve your experiences at our store and educational center. We are very proud of the positive feedback, but we do see areas that need our attention.

We want you to value your membership and enjoy every shopping trip to Ever’man.

As you read through this THA, you will see some of the values of your membership and the benefits it helps to bring to our community. You will see why Ever’man is not your normal everyday grocery store. Yes, we sell a much better quality of food but we also invest back into our community. This investment comes in many different ways.

We invest into educational programs including cooking classes, support groups, educational classes, exercise classes and health fairs. We also work hard to provide our employees with a better working environment than your average retail business. We provide a fair wage and a very competitive benefits package. We close on major holidays, so our employees can spend time with their families. We believe a happy employee will take pride in their work and treat our members and customers to first class service on every visit. We also donate a good bit of money and food to local charities.

In reviewing the recent survey, the most common comment was concerning prices. We know the cost of our products are more expensive than conventional products. Our products will cost a little more, because they are far superior products to the conventional

equivalents. We work very hard to secure the best prices we can. We negotiate prices in many different ways.

The first and most impactful way is by being a founding member of the National Cooperative Grocers (NCG).

This organization is a co-op of co-ops, which was started by and continues to be managed by its members. The NCG, brings the buying power of 150 separate co-ops to the table when negotiating prices on our behalf. The NCG negotiates with our largest vendor “United Natural Foods Inc.” and many independent health and wellness suppliers. Without the NCG, we would have much less buying power with these companies.

We negotiated many deals directly with smaller vendors and directly with brokers. We attend several foods shows which always have vendors offering products at a reduced cost. We in turn, pass these savings on to our members and customers. A few examples are pallets of coconut water, pallets of Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar and other large displays of products stacked near the service desk.

Very recently, we have restructured our Family Basics Program into the much larger Co-op Basics Program. We have added many new items like the organic Field Day and Natural Value lines. We are very happy to be able to offer these store brand organic products (only available at the co-op) at great everyday prices. Please see more about this program at the store.

In closing, please know, that we are happy to get your feedback and will be working hard to use it as we get even better. Thanks for continuing to support your food cooperative since 1973. We appreciate you as a member and customer.

BOARD NEWS DAVE DEBLANDER BOARD PRESIDENT

Did you know that as a member of Ever’man, you have a say in how the co-op is run? Ever’man’s legal structure is a not-for-profit corporation but the store is run by the seven cooperative principles.

As a member you have the privilege to run and the right to vote for the board of directors. The member elected board of directors establishes policies and hires the General Manager. Unlike conventional stores, the members are truly in control and their opinion is desired and extremely valuable. The General Manager is the only employee that the board oversees and the GM reports to the board on a monthly basis. All this is done at the monthly Board of Directors meeting, which is usually held on the last Monday of each month at 6 pm at the Educational Center. Members are encouraged to attend and time is allotted for member comments.

Please accept our invitation to come out some time and see how your store is run.

Members also have other privileges and benefits, such as discounts on bulk orders and classes held at the Educational Center. The cost is quite reasonable, $12 annually and even less for seniors at $5. Member only specials are advertised in the The Healthy Alternative, as well as online and in the store.

The best part of being a member, though, is just the fact that you are a part of a thriving, vital part of the community. The purpose of Ever’man and the important role we play in the community cannot be overstated. Wellness and a healthy lifestyle are becoming more and more a centerpiece of peoples’ lives and no one leads the way like Ever’man. Our new organic garden is setting such a wonderful example to our customers, young and old, that yearround fresh vegetables and herbs can be grown here and it can be a beautiful and important feature of our lives. I know that I am inspired by that garden and, as a matter of fact, have just made an organic raised bed garden at our home and Ever’man’s garden was the inspiration. It looks like so much fun and what a joy to eat your own fresh, organic, delicious food that has come about from your own labor of love.

As a board, we are looking for ways that membership in the co-op can have more meaning to our members.

We truly welcome your suggestions and encourage you, our members, to let us know how you think an Ever’man membership can be more valuable.

Acting on Customer Survey Results More Member Benefits for the Youngest of Members!

Our members consistently voice their care about the youth of our community. Members want us to support kids in learning about healthy choices.

In response, Eve r’m an Board and Staff fully support programs that further the aim of teaching our youth. Just a few of the opportunities we offer to support the education of our youth include: children’s classes, support groups, special events, and special grocery store tours.

We also offer support to mothers Y AT EV with babies and host La Leche E DA League on the first Thursday of each month, this group offers support and education about breastfeeding. Our weekly Story PE Sprouts class is volunteer-based DA NS RI ACO O L and has snack, story, and playtime LA, F for kids ages 3-5. We love to host special group events with children, and have already hosted two fun events this year! In January the West Florida Homeschool Society joined us for a special Mystery Store Tour, and in April we hosted the Girl Scouts to celebrate Earth Day and earn the Ever’man Earth Day Patch. We offer healthy snack recipes (see page 10 of this issue), and will be showcasing special coop children’s recipes beginning in May. We are pleased to offer the Coop explorers programs, which include kid friendly cooking recipes and the co-op explorer card.

The Co-op Explorer Card allows children to receive a free apple, banana or orange when they present the card to our produce department.

This is a great way to promote healthy choices in children, and it also may help give the parents and guardians a break since the children have something to snack on while they shop.

Staff members at Ever’man work daily to do just that for you! If you have been a member for a while with us, you know you can always special order your favorites and get a discount on bulk quantities. Just ask our friendly Customer Service staff. Most recently, we have added product categories to the Co+op Basi¢s items (formerly the Family Basics Program) by greatly increasing our selection of Organic Field Day. Additionally we have added a new line of certified organic products from Natural Value. We currently carry over 40 items from Natural Value with new items becoming available monthly.

Our demo stations around the store have product samples for you to try, have recipe cards for you to take, and have informational flyers that enhance your quality of life! Choose from 70+ classes! Be sure to pick up a monthly printed calendar of classes at the community board, around the corner from the Customer Service desk.

Here are some of the valuable healthy eating and living tips shared.

Cat’s cooking: Cat always likes to have a vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free option in her garden-inspired cooking classes.

Last month she made fish tacos and used collard wraps from the garden. If you do not grow your own collards, look for fresh organic collards in the Ever’man Produce Department.

Essential Oils for Stress: Oils, if properly used, may relieve tension.

Lavender and Valerian oils are example of oils that help with relaxing and calming. Other examples of uses for essential oils, rosemary oil is great to smell when you need to concentrate and peppermint oil is a great way to re-energize and help wake you up.

Overview to herbal medicine: Make your own herbal remedy. This month, class attendees learned how to make their own elderberry syrup and a healing salve from ingredients found in our Wellness Department.

These healing remedies focused on ingredients from the bulk herb section of our Wellness Department, including dried elderberries and Beeswax. Combining these with various essential oils can allow the salve to serve different purposes. For example, salves that contain lavender oil are calming, and those with eucalyptus oil are antiinflammatory and may help with muscle pain.

How do you serve and deliver member value?

SONNY PORTER MEAT & SEAFOOD MANAGER

In our department, we are always fully staffed and have someone at the counter ready to provide information and assistance every hour the store is open. We educate members and customers on the differences between the products we carry and what is available at conventional grocery stores. Our close relationships with local vendors translate to member value when vendors come to the store to teach. One such example is Chef Reid Harrison of White Oak Pastures who conducted a cooking with grass-fed beef class during Anniversary Week. We always aim to serve and are quick to respond to special customer requests for information and specific product details. We make our trained staff easily available to shoppers by providing a service call button by the seafood service case.

STEVE COCHRAN PRODUCE MANAGER

In produce we have a wide variety of cut fruit and cut veggies for those who are looking for that quick snack or quick dinner idea. We are constantly changing the variety based on availability but the core items will always be there. Looking for something we don’t have?

Just ask, and we will do all we can to accommodate your requests. Each Produce Associate is knowledgeable and will go the extra mile to fill your order. Through the summer months, we will offer a wide variety of local summer fruit and vegetables from our local farmers including cantaloupes, watermelons, squash, cucumbers, peppers, and blueberries. For the summer we will also offer a soft fruit program to include peaches, plums, pluots, apricots, Donut peaches, nectarines, and even white peaches and white nectarines, along with a wide varieties of grapes. As long as Mother Nature cooperates we will offer every variety!

In the Ever’man Grocery Department we are always on the lookout for new items and product deals to bring greater selection and increase the value of your shopping dollar. In response to your requests for organic at a good price, we have recently introduced a new line of certified organic products from Natural Value. We currently carry over 40 items from Natural Value with new items becoming available monthly. We have greatly increased our selection of Organic Field Day items as well and new Field Day items are rolling onto our shelves monthly. BELINDA CARLINO CUSTOMER SERVICE MANAGER In Customer Service, serving you and delivering member value for the co-op is a high priority. In order to better serve you, we strive to provide friendly and knowledgeable service at all times. One way we deliver excellence is by knowing the location of the products you are seeking. Another goal of ours is to greet you and be attentive to your needs; be it bagging or assistance in getting your groceries to your vehicle or working with you on special orders. If we don’t have something you are looking for, special orders can be accomplished at customer service desk or over the phone. We are always here to help, so come by the customer service desk with any of your questions or needs!

LYN SPARKS WELLNESS MANAGER In the Wellness department, we are very fortunate to have a lot of support from our vendors. They provide our staff with frequent training keeping us informed of new products and trends. Vendor representatives perform in store product demonstrations while becoming familiar with our member and customer needs. The Health and Beauty department is frequently changing and we quickly offer new items following trends seen in the industry. We really listen to our customers suggestions and whenever possible we try to bring the item into the store. We work to get the best deal possible from our vendors allowing us to pass on those discounts to our shoppers.

PREPARED FOODS MANAGER The Ever’man Cafe continues to add value for our members and consumers with many additions in variety on our hot and cold bars. We have expanded our breakfast selections significantly including the addition of Pecan Coffee Cake and vegan gluten free French Toast, as well as a Spinach Broccoli Frittata and Cheesy Bacon Wrapped Eggs. The addition of pizza to the hot bar on Tuesday and Friday has also been a huge hit. Deviled eggs were added to our Grab’N’Go a couple months ago and have been very popular with our customers seeking a quick snack or side item. We have started testing premium sandwiches to add to our custom sandwich program and now offer baklava and spanakopita in the counter case. Multi packs of smaller sized cookies and cupcakes are now included in our bakery lineup for those members who prefer packaging other than singles. We plan over the next few months to continue research and testing new products to offer greater variety and value to the many great products we serve every day.

All About Food Baked Crab and Asparagus Spread

Ingredients •1 tablespoon olive oil •1 bunch asparagus, trimmed and cut into 1/2-inch pieces •1 cup chopped canned artichoke hearts •1 cup chopped fresh tomatoes •3 cloves garlic, chopped •1 6-ounce can lump crab meat, drained •1/2 teaspoon sea salt •1/8 teaspoon black pepper •2 eggs •1 8-ounce package Neufchâtel or cream cheese, softened •1/2 cup milk •1/3 cup grated Parmesan •2 large pinches smoked paprika •1/4 cup slivered almonds

Preparation

Nutritional Information Per Serving: 210 calories, 14 g. fat, 100 mg. cholesterol, 440 mg. sodium, 10 g. carbohydrate, 4 g. fiber, 14 g. protein

Serving Suggestion This crowd-pleasing appetizer pairs well with white wines like Sauvignon Blanc or lighter reds like a Pinot Noir.

Serve with crisp slices of cucumber, jicama or zucchini as an alternative to bread or crackers.

• Heat oven to 375°F. Heat the olive oil in a sauté pan, then add the asparagus, artichokes, tomatoes and garlic. Sauté for about 5 minutes until asparagus is just tender. Remove from the skillet and place in a small, oiled baking dish. Stir in the crabmeat, and add salt and pepper.

• In a food processor, blend together the eggs, Neufchâtel and milk until fully incorporated. Pour the egg and cheese mixture over the crab and veggies, then top with Parmesan, smoked paprika and almonds.

Bake uncovered on the middle rack in the oven for 25 minutes. Remove from the oven and serve hot with toasted baguette slices or crackers.

Nut Butter and Flax Powerballs Ingredients

Preparation

•1 1/2 cups almond butter •1 banana, peeled and mashed •2 tablespoons ground flaxseed •2 tablespoons whey protein powder •2 tablespoons cocoa powder •1 tablespoon honey •1⁄3 cup almonds, finely chopped

In a mixing bowl, stir together the almond butter, banana, flax, protein powder, cocoa powder and honey. Blend until smooth. Line a plate or pan with parchment paper.

Roll into 1- to 2-inch balls and place on parchment paper.

Next, roll each ball in the chopped almonds and return to parchment paper. Place in the refrigerator or freezer until firm.

Serving Suggestion Place these in a tightly-sealed container and store in the freezer for a convenient energy-boosting snack. They‘re a great addition to a party tray, too, with raw vegetables and dried fruit. Substitute peanut or cashew butter for almond, if you prefer.

Education is a Top Priority at Ever’man Members and Staff Work Together to Provide Community with Valuable Resources

Since its inception in 1973, Ever’man has worked diligently to become the community’s go-to for health and wellness education, information, and products. Currently we offer 78 monthly classes ranging from fitness classes to cooking classes, and everything Tim McGrail of Equal Exchange in between. Volunteer April 7th, in-store demonstration instructors enhance attendee’s participation by bringing their personal life experience and knowledge to each class. These volunteers are passionate and knowledgeable about living a healthy and holistic lifestyle. They offer support and guidance in their classes. Education extends to in-store staff trainings such as our Natural Food Training, which allows our staff to learn more about the natural foods we carry, and thus provide deeper knowledge and insight to customers.

providers such as Florida Department of Health in Escambia County and Community Action. In January, we hosted wellness and supplement expert Dr. Michael Murray, who has been featured on the Dr. Oz show. He gave a presentation on how to overcome stress, anxiety and insomnia naturally. In April the head chef of White Oak Pastures, Chef Reid Harrison, taught an insightful grass-fed beef cooking class and explained the differences between grass-fed and conventional beef farming. We also enjoy using the Educational Center as a space to celebrate. We celebrated Earth Day with the Girl Scouts in April, where we taught the girls about gardening as well as making sustainable choices to pick up garbage and not to litter.

Education is also passed on by the vendors and the products that Ever’man carries. Vendors come to educate our shoppers on their products and their company’s sustainable business practices.

During our Anniversary celebration, Tim McGrail from Equal Exchange offered a class focused on Fair Trade and the formation of Equal Exchange as an employee owned cooperative. Our Wellness department regularly has knowledgeable representatives from our suppliers walking the aisles talking to customers and answering questions.

The Ever’man Educational Center supports the Ever’man mission to provide education about health, nutrition, and environmental issues to the community. Classes taught in the Educational Center cover an array of topics focused on: health and wellness, physical fitness, support and community, cooking, special events, and environmental activities. We are constantly adding new classes and special events to support the interests of our members and community.

Brands carried in the store frequently offer educational programs that the Store Merchandising team works to incorporate into the store. Brand programs include, but are not limited to, education about fair trade, socially responsible sourcing, and farm sustainability.

Over the years, Ever’man management, with the full support of the Ever’man Board, has acted to enhance educational services by purchasing and renovating a separate building. This separate structure, the Educational Center, offers a full kitchen, seating, and presentation equipment; all of this was designed with sustainable materials and practices in mind. Besides the 78 classes open to the public, we conduct special classes such as featured authors, vendors, and a continuing partnership with community health services

Marketing News Charity Eco-Friendly Bag Program The Charity Eco-Friendly Bag Program gives members and shoppers the opportunity to contribute to worthy community charities. Since July 1st, 2015 at every Ever’man Grocery and Cafe cash register, all shoppers are being rewarded for shopping with ecofriendly bags. For each eco-friendly bag used, Ever’man will donate 5¢ to a charity of the shopper’s choice. Charity choices will fall into three 501(c3) categories; an organization that is committed to providing healthy food, another that supports sustainable environmental practices and one that ensures the well-being of our pets and wildlife.

ECUA Compostable Bags Ever’man is pleased to offer Emerald Coast Utilities Authority (ECUA) compostable paper-bags.

ECUA began composting operations at the Central Water Reclamation Facility (CWRF), in March 2016. The facility combines ground yard waste (leaves, grass, pine straw, etc.) collected throughout the community, including the City of Pensacola, with biosolids to create an optimal blend of materials that generates a nutrient-rich final product.

Ever’man and ECUA encourages customers to discontinue using plastic bags and consider utilizing compostable paper yard waste bags designed for yard waste collection. Plastic bags don’t decompose and cannot be processed into environmentallyfriendly compost or mulch. Help ECUA turn your yard waste into compost by using compostable paper-bags. Paper yard waste bags can be found in home improvement centers, large retailers, through online sources, local garden centers, and select grocery stores including your cooperative grocer, Ever’man, where the bags are offered at no cost. City of Pensacola Sanitation collects the yard waste and disposes the materials at the ECUA compost facility.

Tommy McGuigan , Ever’man Assistant Customer Service Manager Can you share with us what prepared you to be the Ever’man Assistant Customer Service Manager?

On my 16th birthday my mother told me, “Get in the car, you’re getting a job.” The first and only place I applied to was Delchamps, a now defunct grocery store chain. They hired me that day and I spent the next four years learning several of the front end positions there. During college I was a cashier at Ever’man. Back then my current position didn’t exist and we (the cashiers) shared a lot of what is currently desk responsibilities such as placing special orders and entering membership information. I eventually moved into my current position as Assistant Customer Service Manager, a position that I have held for the past 11 years!

Tell us a little about your interests and how you spend your free time.

I have a diverse range of interests. I have been playing tennis since I was in middle school. A couple years ago some of my buddies and I started playing disk golf a lot. At home, I relax by playing video games and hanging out with my two dogs, Rikku, a black lab border collie mix and Aang, a black lab greyhound mix. My most recent hobby has been playing and collecting dorky board games. I meet with a group of friends every Wednesday to play things like Catan, Roll for the Galaxy, and Concordia.
