GET FIT

Welcome to 2019. How ya feelin’? If you’re like most people, you probably could stand to lose a few pounds. We’re not suggesting anything, of course. It’s just that, statistically speaking, the two most popular New Year’s resolutions are to eat healthier and get in shape. Fortunately, downtown Pensacola has, over the course of the last decade or so, become a great place to get a good workout. Whether you’re a runner, a lifter, a yogi or a professional couch potato, there’s something downtown to get you moving. To help you get started, we put together this roundup of every gym, studio, club or class we could find. Get out there! Revolt Fitness: 1102 N. 9th Ave. What started in a garage has grown to become one of Pensacola’s premier crossfit gyms. Wife and husband team Kat and Omar Armenteros welcome newbies and veterans alike at their 9th Ave. location and teach fundamental crossfit in individual and group sessions throughout the day. Workouts change from day to day and are all focused on building the functional fitness that is foundational to crossfit. Revolt also offers a Silver Foxes class for seniors three days a week. “Crossfit has such a stigma of being young fit people going as hard as they can, but it’s not,” Kat said. Not sure where you stand? Revolt offers assessments for beginners to personalize your workouts just for you. YMCA: 165 E. Intendencia St. If you haven’t at least checked out the new Bear-Levin-Studer YMCA since it opened more than two years ago, there’s no better time than the New Year. When it comes to amenities, nobody beats the Y. From the pool, to the basketball court, to the
sauna and, of course, the fullyequipped gym, the YMCA has it all. The Y also offers a variety of fitness classes throughout the day, after school care, one-onone coaching, swim lessons and more. Single and family memberships are available and include free parking in the Southtowne garage. Pure Barre: 6 S. Palafox St. Probably the hottest workout for women under 30, barre is a mix of aerobics, yoga and endurance training, set to music, that’s guaranteed to leave you dripping with sweat and sore the next day, but in the best way. Through a combination of lowimpact, high-intensity movements, Pure Barre workouts hit the whole body and last about 45-50 minutes. If that weren’t enough, they even have cool socks! Razor’s Edge Fitness: 151 S. H St. Crossfit gets a bad rap. It’s not all flipping tires and climbing ropes (though we’re told that’s an option). At its core crossfit is about high intensity, varied workouts to prepare you for whatever you might encounter out in the real world. Razor’s
Edge offers a mix of weight training, gymnastics and endurance conditioning to get you ready for whatever life throws at you. Their staff, led by Gil Petruska, includes some lifters that have competed in national competitions and trained NFL players. No need to be intimidated though, beginners are welcome. Pure Pilates: 426 S. Palafox St. You’ve no doubt heard about Pilates by now, or perhaps know someone who does it. Part conditioning, flexibility and coordination training, Pilates is among the most popular exercise regimens in the US. Pure Pilates offers two locations, one of which is in downtown Pensacola. The studio teaches classic pilates principles in group classes and one-on-one sessions. Classes are offered throughout the day in both downtown Pensacola and in Gulf Breeze. Gracie Pensacola: 106 S. Palafox St. Looking to learn some selfdefense while you shape up? Gracie Pensacola has been training students in what what they call “the most effective martial art” for years right on Palafox Street. Jiu-jitsu operates on the
premise that any real-world fight is going to end up on the group. Learn to dominate the ground game and you’ll come out ahead. Ride Society: 3 S. Palafox St. Music plus spin cycle. The formula at Ride Society is simple but powerful. You’ll pedal to the beat until your soaked in sweat. The typical class is 45 minutes, but Ride Society offers 35- and 60-minute variations as well. Ride Society’s different instructors make their own playlists to give each class a unique vibe. When class is over and you’re craving some calories, Ride Society’s Ripe Juice bar has delicious smoothies, salads and bowls to feed those rippling thigh muscles. Your first ride is free! WOB Tap It & Run Club: 200 S. Palafox St. Sometimes we all need a little motivation to get moving. What better than cheap beer and free food? The WOB Run Club is among the most popular running clubs in the city and hits the road every Wednesday at 6 pm, rain or shine. Runners start and finish at World of Beer location on Palafox Street. The club runs

a 5k route through downtown Pensacola, around Palafox Pier and the Community Maritime Park. Runners get half-off select drafts and free food (while it lasts!) after their run. • Breathe Yoga and Wellness Center: 505 South Adams Street In and out. In and out. Relaxing yet invigorating, tranquil yet challenging. Yoga is among the most popular forms of exercise in the US and Breathe Yoga and Wellness Center teaches just about every form of yoga there is. With locations in downtown and on Scenic Highway and an expansive class schedule, relaxation and meditation can be had seven days a week. Unsure if yoga is for you? Try one of their $5 Community Hot Yoga Fridays. Anytime Fitness: 100 S. Alcaniz St. Ever get the urge to bust out a set of curls at 2 a.m.? Who doesn’t? Well, Anytime Fitness has you covered. As the name implies, Anytime Fitness is open 24 hours a day. With more than 4,000 locations nationwide and eight in the Pensacola area, you’re never far from a workout.
