PENSACOL A ICE FLYERS RETURN TO THE HANGAR

he Pensacola Ice Flyers will once again return to the ice to defend their President’s Cup crown at the first home game of the 2021–2022 season on Saturday, October 16. This marks the fourth championship win for the Ice Flyers, which has been especially rewarding as the team was able to power through and play, even with new COVID-19 protocols in place.

The Ice Flyers will debut their newly-designed championship logo and uniforms on game night, which reflect their most recent President’s Cup championship win. New merchandise and Ice Flyers swag featuring the new logo, will be available for purchase at the game. The kick-off game is set for October 16 at 7:05 pm against the Birmingham Bulls at the Pensacola Bay Center. This season’s schedule includes 56 games and will conclude with an away game on April 9 against Georgia’s Macon Mayhem. Fans can purchase tickets to single games online at ticketmaster.com or at

professional contracts and are moving up to new leagues. “Coach Rod has been working to bring in some really good talent, people and players to wear the Ice Flyers jersey and to, really, truly compete at the highest level on their way to another championship,” Harris said. The Ice Flyers have announced the signing of f ive new players for this season’s team roster. Fan favorites, forward Brennan Blaszczak and defensemen Duggie Lagrone and Cam Bakker will return for a new season. Additionally, rookie forwards Bobby Hampton and Marcus Russell signed to join the ranks. The Ice Flyers have also signed Queen’s University forward Jared Bethune to this season’s roster. “Defending our title will be a fun challenge. We will have a target on us, so we must be ready to play every night, which is a good thing.

It builds consistency and consistency is what wins in the playoffs,” Pensacola Ice Flyers Head Coach, Rod Aldoff said. “It’s exciting, I’m looking forward to the challenges as a coach, and the players are looking forward to the challenges as well—becoming a team and family and representing the city of Pensacola the best way possible.”

This season, the team has plans to host more theme nights and events to benefit local charities. Pensacola Ice Flyers Marketing Director, Brenden Arnrey said that the February 22 home game theme night would include the return of the beloved Wiener Dog Races, which has been a local favorite for many years and benefits the Pensacola Humane Society. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the history of ice hockey in Pensacola. The Ice Flyers plan to celebrate the momentous occasion with a special home game for its fans. The Bay Center’s video board will feature shoutouts to visiting alumni, and the Ice Flyers will spor t a speciallydesigned jersey featuring a 25th anniversary logo just for the occasion. “I just want to thank the community for their support and their loyalty and their commitment to the Ice Flyers throughout all the difficult times we’ve all experienced in the last year and a half. It’s greatly appreciated and we’re all looking forward to seeing everyone at the hangar on October 16,” Harris said. PENSACOLA INTERSTATE FAIR OPENS OCT. 21 Returning for its 87th season Thursday, Oct. 21 through Sunday, Oct. 31, Pensacola’s biggest and longest-running annual agricultural and entertainment tradition returns, bringing with it the excitement of attractions and screams from exhilarating rides, exhibits, fair food, fun and shows for the whole family. BRING A FURRY FRIEND HOME DURING ADOPT A SHELTER DOG MONTH It’s the perfect time of year to bring home a new canine friend from the Escambia County Animal Welfare and Adoption Center. To celebrate Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, all dog adoptions from the center have a special reduced adoption fee of $25 during the month of October. Adoption fees include spay or neutering services, microchips, heartworm tests and the initial vaccinations including rabies vaccinations. Escambia County residents will be required to purchase a license at the time of adoption. This is an additional $11 over the adoption fees and is paid separately. flooded with homeless puppies because dogs in the area have not been spayed or neutered. In just seven years, one unspayed female dog and her offspring can produce 97,000 puppies. On a national scale, the ASPCA reports that 3.1 million dogs are admitted to shelters each year. The Escambia County Animal Welfare and Adoption Center hopes to find homes for pets brought to the center by offering affordable adoptions for dogs during the month of October. CITY WORKING WITH FEMA TO COMPLETE REMAINING HURRICANE SALLY REPAIRS The City of Pensacola is continuing to work diligently with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to acquire the necessary approvals and funding in order to complete remaining repairs from Hurricane Sally damage. The public’s patience is appreciated as the city works through the FEMA process required to move forward with repairs to City of Pensacola parks, boardwalks, waterfront areas and other public amenities that were damaged by Hurricane Sally. “City of Pensacola staff have been working with FEMA as quickly as possible to move these projects forward,” Mayor Grover Robinson said. “We truly appreciate the public’s patience as we work to get the necessary funding and approvals from FEMA, while also working through nationwide material shortages and other challenges throughout this process. We understand that our residents are anxious to see these repairs completed, and the city is also more than ready to have our hurricanedamaged parks and waterfront areas restored for the public to enjoy.” All remaining FEMA-funded projects related to Hurricane Sally damage in the City of Pensacola are expected to be completed by Spring 2022, except for Wayside Park.

RECYCLING OPERATIONS AT ECUA FACILITY TO RESUME Update from Emerald Coast Utilities Authority: Repairs on the ECUA Materials Recycling Facility have been completed, and will reopen on Monday, Oct. 11 to the cities, counties and commercial haulers that use to facility to process recyclables. ECUA has began operating to clear out the stockpiled recyclables on the tipping floor. ECUA is still awaiting delivery of the magnet used in the metal sorting area, which is on backorder and expected to be delivered in December. ECUA will sort metal items manually until this equipment is delivered and installed., Update from the City of Pensacola: Transportation of recycled materials from Pensacola Sanitation customers to

ECUA’s recycling facility will resume on Monday, Oct. 11. City of Pensacola Sanitation customers are encouraged to resume good recycling habits at that time. The City of Pensacola Sanitation Services Department uses ECUA’s recycling facility to process recyclable materials from City Sanitation customers. Due to damage from a fire at the facility in July, recycling for City of Pensacola Sanitation customers has been temporarily on hold while repairs were made. Tan recycling cans for City of Pensacola Sanitation customers continued to be collected during the closure, but materials could not transported to ECUA’s recycling facility. The City of Pensacola thanks the public for their patience during this time and appreciates their diligence in recycling.

JUDGE CLEARS WAY FOR CHALLENGES TO ELECTIONS LAW DARA KAM NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA

TALLAHASSEE—A federal judge on Friday allowed a series of challenges to a new state elections law to move forward, setting the stage for a showdown over Republican legislators’ efforts to make it more difficult for Floridians to vote by mail and for organizations to conduct voter-registration drives. The Florida Conference of the NAACP, Disability Rights Florida, the League of Women Voters of Florida, UnidosUS and a number of other organizations allege that the changes approved by the Legislature this spring could curtail voting by Black, Latino and disabled residents. The law (SB 90) was one of the most controversial issues of the 2021 legislative session and came after a relatively smooth 2020 election in Florida. But GOP legislators maintained the changes were necessary to ensure election security and prevent fraud in future elections. The lawsuits focus on several parts of the law that deal with voting by mail, as well as a requirement that third-party voter registration groups provide a disclaimer to people signing up to vote. The law set new restrictions on the availability and use of drop boxes, where people can drop off vote-by-mail ballots. Under the law, supervisors of elections must have the boxes staffed at all times and can only use the boxes during early voting hours and at early voting sites. Supervisors who violate the requirement face $25,000 fines. The lawsuits contend that the restrictions will have a negative impact on people who work during the day and voters with disabilities, who might be forced to bring ballots into early voting sites if supervisors don’t provide drop boxes outside.

In four separate rulings Friday, Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker said Secretary of State Laurel Lee, Attorney General Ashley Moody and supervisors of elections should remain as defendants in the cases, though he dismissed the officials from some parts of the challenges. Lee sought to dismiss a lawsuit filed in May by the NAACP, Disability Rights Florida and Common Cause, arguing that she should not be a defendant and calling the lawsuit a “shotgun” complaint that does not properly spell out allegations. But on Friday, Walker said Lee is a proper party because her office has authority to enforce the $25,000 penalties against elections supervisors who violate the drop-box restrictions. The lawsuit also argued that the elections changes are unconstitutional because the “brunt of the harm” will be borne by Black voters, Hispanic voters, elderly voters and voters with disabilities. But Lee argued that the case should be dismissed because the vote-by-mail restrictions do not place undue burdens on the right to vote and that the plaintiffs’ claims fail because they focus on burdens placed on “vulnerable” voters instead of on the electorate as a whole. “She is wrong on both points,” Walker wrote in a 62-page order. “In sum, defendant Lee’s arguments that restrictions on mail-in ballots do not implicate the right to vote is unsound and unsupported by precedent.” Lee also disputed allegations in the lawsuit that the mail-in ballot restrictions, enacted by Republican lawmakers after an unprecedented number of Floridians cast their ballots by mail last fall, were designed to curb participation in elections by minority voters. The restrictions are a continuation of a long line of efforts aimed

at making it more difficult for Black people to vote, plaintiffs argued. In a June motion, lawyers for Lee wrote that the plaintiffs “choose to dwell on the distant past.” Walker, pointing to a ruling by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, acknowledged that courts have cautioned against “allowing the old, outdated intentions of previous generations to taint (the state’s) ability to enact voting legislation.” But plaintiffs “have at least plausibly alleged that the old, outdated intentions of the current generation are tainting Florida’s election code,” he added. The plaintiffs’ arguments were valid enough to allow the case to proceed, the chief judge said, writing that the “plaintiffs’ allegations draw a straight, shameful line from the discriminatory laws of the 1880s to today. Whether plaintiffs can prove such a link is another matter. At this stage, however, these allegations will do.” The lawsuits also target part of the law that imposes restrictions on providing such things as food and water to people waiting in line to vote within 150-foot “non-solicitation” zones outside polling places. For example, a lawsuit filed by plaintiffs including the Hispanic Federation said groups routinely “provide entertainment for families with children, snacks, soft drinks, water and phone charge stations” while voters wait in line. The lawsuits also maintain that areas with large numbers of Black and Latino voters have traditionally had longer wait times for voting. Lee, however, argued that the law “does not in any way prohibit innocent, nonpartisan assistance to voters waiting in line.” The lawsuits also allege that part of the law requiring third-party voter registration groups to provide disclaimers to people signing up to vote is intended to have a

chilling effect on groups conducting voterregistration drives. The law requires the groups to submit voter registrations to supervisors of elections in the counties in which the residents live within 14 days after the applications are completed. The groups also have to notify applicants at the time the registrations are collected that the organizations might not deliver the applications to the supervisors within the two-week time period and to advise people that they can deliver the applications in person or by mail and can register to vote online. The disclaimers would discourage people from registering to vote through third-party organizations, which frequently target Black and Hispanic prospective voters, plaintiffs argued. The new law also makes it a crime to distribute, order, request, collect, deliver or possess more than two vote-by-mail ballots other than a voter’s own ballot or an immediate family member’s ballot. Plaintiffs allege that the provision will make it more difficult for people living in congregate settings or in crowded households to cast ballots by mail. But Walker said Lee, Moody and the supervisors of elections aren’t proper defendants in the challenge against that part of the law. The judge wrote he “has not identified any statute that requires defendant supervisors to record or confirm the identities of volunteers who assist voters in returning vote-by-mail ballots or to report any suspected violation” of that section of the law “to the appropriate authorities.” One group of possible defendants would be state attorneys who are responsible for enforcing criminal laws, Walker noted. “Plaintiffs, however, have not sued any state attorneys,” he wrote.

FELONS’ RIGHTS LEADER MEADE GETS RIGHTS RESTORED NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF Desmond Meade, a former drug dealer who has garnered international accolades after leading the drive to pass a 2018 constitutional amendment to restore voting rights for felons, has had his civil rights restored by the Florida Board of Executive Clemency. The move stemmed from changes made by the clemency board earlier this year. The restoration of civil rights for Meade, who recently was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship “genius” grant, means that the Orlando voting-rights advocate can register to vote, serve on juries and run for public office. The action by the board came after Gov. Ron DeSantis twice rejected Meade’s requests for a full pardon. Meade, who received a law degree from Florida International University but was unable to practice law in Florida because of his decades-old felony convictions,

The tribe, through its Wind Creek Hospitality company, operates gambling facilities in Gretna and Pensacola, along with facilities in other states. It contributed $1 million in September to a political committee known as Florida Voters in Charge, which is spearheading the proposed gambling constitutional amendment. In June, the committee received $17 million from the gambling company Las Vegas Sands Corp. It had spent about $13.9 million as of Sept. 30 as it tries to collect enough petition
