ACCE LE R ATING IDE A S OF TOMORROW JET T YIOT HOSTS OPEN HOUSE by Dakota Parks
T
he pandemic has permanently altered where, how and when we work. Suddenly commercial office spaces were left empty as workers set up camp at kitchen tables and makeshift desks in their homes. This reimagining of the office space and work culture resulted in an insurgence of remote workers, hybrid work schedules, unprecedented career switches and an even greater need for coworking spaces that break the monotony of remote work, inspire new ideas and accelerate businesses.
Prior to the pandemic, coworking spaces were the fastest-growing type of office space in the commercial real estate sector. While they currently comprise less than five percent of the market, they’re expected to make up 30 percent by 2030, according to the real estate company JLL. Despite their growth, coworking spaces have also had to pivot and reimagine their own spaces for this insurgence of remote workers. One such space, JettyIoT (Internet of Things), located at 3500 Barrancas Avenue, first opened its doors in startup mode in March 2020 and has been steadily building relationships with the entrepreneurial community and supporting the growth of its current members. As the only technology-centric space in Pensacola, JettyIoT is open to an array of businesses and entrepreneurs but specializes in accelerating and supporting growth-stage entrepreneurs in the many facets of the tech field including but not limited to IoT, software and app design, marine technology, sensor-based technology and Software as a Service (SaaS) companies. After many pandemic-related cancellations, JettyIoT is officially hosting an open house on January 12, from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm for the public to explore the space, meet the team and learn more about their entrepreneurial workspace.
“I think startups, entrepreneurs, solopreneurs, young businesses and the entire community are always going to need a community space, where they can gather, where they can get advice, mentorship and access to resources,” JettyIoT Community Director Karen McLouth explained. “If you’re not in the room, in a shared space, you don’t get the same sense of collaboration or those passing conversations that spark ideas. I think shared workspaces are always going to be needed for people to break the monotony of their home office, get energized from others and change their perspectives.” JettyIoT’s 11,000-squarefoot space is designed to help members shake up their perspectives as they can choose to work from a private workstation, a small office or prop up their feet and get cozy in one of the several comfy areas with sofas and coffee tables. Members also have access to a meeting room and conference room, a soundproof music/ media room and a makerspace equipped with a 3D printer, CNC machine and various tools to work on projects. Other amenities include 24/7 access to the space, fiber internet, free parking, mail service, ergonomic workstations, storage space, free coffee and access to the kitchen. JettyIoT offers flexible, month-to-month
memberships to suit most budgets and stages of business, from part-time desks to 24/7 offices and all-inclusive amenities. The makerspace, media room and meeting rooms can also be rented by non-members. Members not only gain access to this retrofitted space but also gain access to vital resources, mentorship and networking to help accelerate business. “Our founders, Tom and Carol Patterson, are entrepreneurs, mentors and philanthropists with a background in technology entrepreneurship,” McLouth explained. “They set out to support local entrepreneurs and create an entrepreneurial center with great amenities while also being able to accelerate growth stage companies and provide access to capital and potential investment partners. We also offer sales and marketing mentoring and engagement for young companies that are trying to focus on revenue growth, particularly in SaaS revenue models.” Through this mentorship and access to resources, JettyIoT is able to accelerate businesses and help startups flourish while also cutting their cost of establishing initial office space or headquarters. Two startups that JettyIoT has invested in are CoFlyt, which developed
an app to streamline maintenance for aircraft owners, and Tocaro Blue, which created vessel monitoring technology for boat owners. As McLouth explained, JettyIoT also added flexible parttime membership to support remote workers and month-tomonth memberships for startups. “We realize that people have been working from home and some of them don’t even want to come back. They’re quite comfortable where they are,” she explained. “So, we have to be flexible. And we also have to pivot much like a lot of companies had to do during the pandemic. We didn’t offer part-time membership before. Some people don’t want to be at home all week and they just need a couple of days out to break that monotony of the same four walls or need that interaction, so we need to be flexible as well.” McLouth is passionate about the power of coworking spaces to empower businesses and has been involved in managing coworking spaces in Pensacola since 2017. Despite the growing number of coworking spaces popping up across Pensacola, she explained that JettyIoT is dedicated to collaborating with other coworking spaces to help entrepreneurs any way they can.
WE’RE SOCIAL!
“We all collaborate because we know each other and work together to help these startups as much as we can,” she said. “We want to keep their businesses here in Pensacola and grow Pensacola. At the end of the day, that’s the plan to help these young companies— help build them, support them, mentor them, set them on their way and hope that they stay here and continue to grow. And that develops the local economy for everybody. I will help anyone that walks through our door, even if that means recommending them to a different coworking space that better suits their needs at the moment and hoping we can help them down the line.” Whether you’re looking to book a conference room or need a dedicated space to get in the zone and get some work done, JettyIoT offers startups, entrepreneurs and solopreneurs a space to bring potential clients, network and work alongside other like-minded entrepreneurs. To learn more about JettyIoT, come out to their open house on January 12 from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm or visit jettyiot.com.

ESCAMBIA COUNTY RELAUNCHES COVID-19 DASHBOARD
BEACH HIKE OFFERS LESSONS IN COASTAL ECOLOGY
Due to the rising number of COVID-19 hospitalizations in Escambia County hospitals, Escambia County has relaunched the COVID-19 dashboard. Currently, local hospitalizations in Escambia County stand at 104, with two citizens under the age of 18. The CDC has reported zero deaths from the Omicron variant in Escambia County. “As we mentioned previously, we will reimplement the COVID-19 dashboard if local hospitalizations reach 50 or higher,” said Escambia County Public Safety Director Eric Gilmore. “Unfortunately, we have reached over 100 hospitalizations in a quick time frame. We are going to continue to monitor the local hospitalizations daily, as well as provide weekly updates to the death count provided by the CDC. Our hope is that we see this number drop below 50 again very soon.” The Escambia County Joint Information Center provides updates to our social media channels @BeReadyEscambia on Twitter and Escambia County Emergency Management on Facebook. SESSION TO OPEN WITHOUT COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS JIM TURNER NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF TALLAHASSEE --- Legislative leaders are monitoring the spike in coronavirus cases across Florida but haven’t made plans to reimpose restrictions on public access that were used during the 2021 session. With the 2022 legislative session starting Jan. 11, people will be allowed to roam most of the Capitol complex and address lawmakers in person. “In light of the pandemic, the Florida House last session made significant improvements to facilities, including adding hospital-grade HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters for better air quality, ample hand sanitizing stations and more,” House spokeswoman Jenna Sarkissian said in an email. “These improvements remain in place as the 2022 legislative session approaches and members prepare to do the people’s business.” During the 2021 session, the Senate sharply restricted public access to try to prevent spread of COVID-19. For example, people who wanted to speak before Senate committees had to go to the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center, a few blocks west of the Capitol at Florida State University, and appear through a livestream feed. In the House, lobbyists and other visitors were required to register online at least three hours before committee meetings, show identification and pick up passes to gain access to meeting rooms. Katie Betta, a spokeswoman for Senate President Wilton Simpson, said in an email Monday that Simpson “continues to monitor the status of the pandemic,” but the Senate has not put in place plans to resume the 2021 restrictions. On Dec. 20, Simpson, R-Trilby, advised members that the Senate will be open to visitors throughout the upcoming 60-day session. A memo from Simpson also said senators could request social distancing and masking within their individual offices. “We should all be respectful and
honor such requests,” added Simpson, who in October issued a rebuke to Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo for declining to wear a mask while in the office of Sen. Tina Polsky, D-Boca Raton. Polsky was being treated for breast cancer. Ladapo defended his action by saying he cannot communicate clearly “when half of my face is covered.” Beside the option of senators requiring masks and social distancing in their offices, Simpson said the Senate will continue to conduct frequent cleanings of common areas and restrooms and provide wipes, sanitizer and other products for use in between routine cleanings of office spaces. Also, hand sanitizing stations remain in place in common areas and HEPA filters will be used in committee rooms, the Senate chamber and the press gallery. “We now have a better understanding of how our own personal health impacts others in the workplace,” Simpson wrote. “Everyone is encouraged to monitor their health daily and to stay at home when sick.” The Senate will make testing available to elected officials and their staff, Simpson’s memo said. The Senate and House will hold a joint session Jan. 11 in the House chamber to hear Gov. Ron DeSantis’ State of the State address, the traditional kickoff for the session. Simpson will host a luncheon for senators and their families in the Old Capitol’s Senate chamber after the joint session. The session will open against the backdrop of a spike in COVID-19 cases, as the highly contagious omicron variant of the coronavirus has spread across the state. It also will come two months after lawmakers held a special session that included taking steps to prevent vaccination and mask mandates — a key issue for DeSantis.
A House Democrat filed a proposal Monday that would prevent employers from retaliating against workers who are off work because of going into quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19. Rep. Christopher Benjamin, D-Miami
CDC WARNS AGAINST CRUISE SHIP TRAVEL JIM SAUNDERS NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE — In a potentially ominous message for Florida’s cruiseship industry, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday that people should avoid cruise travel “regardless of vaccination status” because of the spread of COVID-19. The health agency said outbreaks have been reported aboard cruise ships as the highly contagious omicron variant of the coronavirus has helped drive up infections. “Even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants,” the agency said on its website. “The virus that causes COVID-19 spreads easily between people in close quarters on board ships, and the chance of getting COVID-19 on cruise ships is very high, even if you are fully vaccinated and have received a COVID-19 vaccine booster dose.” The agency said people who travel on cruise ships should make sure they are fully vaccinated and get tested for COVID-19 before and after their trips. The CDC notice came after months of efforts by Gov. Ron DeSantis and Attorney General Ashley Moody to fight federal COVID-19 restrictions on the cruise industry and to prevent requirements that cruise passengers show proof of vaccination. A Tampa federal judge sided with the state in June and issued a preliminary injunction against CDC restrictions on the industry, while a Miami federal judge in August backed Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings in a challenge to Florida’s ban on so-called “vaccine passports.” The vaccine passport law blocked businesses from requiring customers to show proof of vaccination, though the federal judge’s ruling only applied to Norwegian. Appeals in both of those cases are pending at the 11th U.S. Circuit Court
of Appeals. The CDC notice Thursday came as Florida and other states have seen massive surges in COVID-19 cases. Meanwhile, Orange County cautioned Thursday that case numbers could go higher after social gatherings around Christmas. Orange County, which takes part in a program that evaluates wastewater for traces of COVID-19, said it received data Wednesday that showed “historic increases of COVID-19 remnants in the county’s wastewater service areas.” “This data helps predict infections four to 10 days before we see changes in our community’s caseload, allowing county leadership and medical professionals to adjust public health resources accordingly,” Ed Torres, director of Orange County Utilities, said in a prepared statement. “Because both symptomatic and asymptomatic carriers of the virus shed remnants in their waste, this data provides an accurate picture of how the virus is spreading in our community regardless of the number of people tested.” Florida hospitals also have seen steady increases this week in numbers of inpatients with COVID-19, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The federal agency’s website Thursday reported that 4,433 Florida hospital inpatients had COVID-19. That was up from a reported 3,836 inpatients with COVID-19 on Wednesday, 3,148 on Tuesday and 2,406 on Monday. While hospitalization numbers have increased, they remain far below the totals this summer, when the delta variant of the coronavirus spread through the state. For instance, Florida had 15,177 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 on Sept. 1, according to federal data.

NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA STAFF TALLAHASSEE First-time unemployment claims in Florida rolled in last month at a pace similar to the period before the coronavirus pandemic pounded the economy. The U.S. Department of Labor estimated 3,982 unemployment claims were filed in Florida during the holiday-shortened week that ended Dec. 25. If unchanged, the estimate would be the fewest number of claims for a single week since another holiday-shortened week in late December 2019 and would put the average of new claims over the past four weeks at 5,347. In the four weeks prior to March 15, 2020, the date state and federal agencies use to mark the start of the pandemic in terms of jobless claims, the weekly average was 5,367. The state saw first-time claims spike to 74,313 during the week that ended March 21, 2020, with the number peaking at 506,670 in the week ending April 18, 2020, as more than 1.4 million Floridians were put out of work. The pace of claims eased during the past year, as the economy was pumped with rounds of massive federal stimulus money and free vaccinations became widely available. As 2021 ended, state agencies also sent out a series of news releases crediting Gov. Ron DeSantis’ push to reopen the economy during the pandemic and pointing to such things as corporate expansions, restaurant openings and a rebound in the tourism industry. “We have seen businesses expanding and relocating in droves --- a trend we know will increase in the coming year,” Marc Adler, acting secretary of commerce at Enterprise Florida, said in a statement last week. The latest state and national numbers about unemployment claims do not appear to show signs of an impact of the fast-spreading omicron variant of the coronavirus. Nationally, 198,000 first-time unem-
ployment claims were filed during the week that ended Dec. 25, down 8,000 from the prior week. That put the national weekly average the past four weeks at 199,250, the lowest since Oct. 25, 1969. For Florida, the estimate for the week that ended Dec. 25 was down from a revised count of 5,160 for the week ending Dec. 18. The Department of Labor initially projected 4,862 claims were filed during the week that ended Dec. 18. Initial weekly estimates have been revised upward each week since May 15. State leaders in May ramped up efforts to get Floridians back into the workforce by withdrawing the state early from two federal assistance programs and reinstating a “work search” requirement for people seeking unemployment benefits. Since then, the state has averaged 7,247 first-time claims a week, and the unemployment rate has fluctuated from a high of 5.1 percent in July to its November rate of 4.5 percent. The November rate reflected 483,000 outof-work Floridians from a labor force of 10.63 million. In the four weeks ending May 15, the weekly average of first-time unemployment claims had been 19,975. Last week, the state Department of Economic Opportunity --- which will release a December unemployment report on Jan. 21 --- announced that improving numbers will lead to a reduction in the maximum length of unemployment benefits from 19 weeks to 12 weeks. State law puts the maximum number of weeks at 12 when unemployment is at or below 5 percent, with an additional week added for each 0.5 percentage point above 5 percent in the third quarter of a calendar year. The number of weeks was pushed up to 19 in 2021 because of the surge in jobless claims after the COVID-19 pandemic hit the state. The third-quarter 2020 unemployment rate was 8.6 percent.
