GET YOUR MOTOR RUNNING
Normally, the sound of a motorcycle brings about thoughts of big biker types or young thrill seekers, with hard looks and devil-may-care attitudes. On September 24, though, the rev of engines will instead bring dapper ladies and gentleman riding vintage motorcycles—all in support of men’s health issues. Inspired by a picture sion to get themselves checked,” of Don Draper, the main characsaid Mark Hawwa, founder of the ter from the TV series Mad Men,
seated on a Matchless Motorcycle, Hawwa decided to start an event to help shake off some of the stigma motorcyclists hold. This first Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride turned out to be a huge success, with over 2,500 riders across 64 participating cities. Hawwa saw the potential and decided that future events would benefit a charity—specifically for global cancer research. Since then, over $7.83 million has been raised from some 124,000 riders around the globe – with 70,000 expected to participate this year to add an additional $5 million in funds. One of these riders is Daniel Fox, a rider out of Kansas City, Missouri who has been participating in the event for the past three years. “I was turned onto the ride by a mutual friend who rides, who was suffering from prostate cancer. After schooling
me on the statistics, it immediately drew me to the cause.” Fox rides a 2008 Ducati Sport Classic, and has raised $1,500 for the event since 2014 and hopes to pass the $2,000 mark this year. He attributes the success of the event because it has no political affiliation and attracts people who want to help and have fun. Despite the success of Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride over the years, the actual event is still very niche. You have to be fully registered in order to see the route for your city, and the routes are not available to the public. The reason for that is many popular styles of motorcycles—like sports bikes, cruisers, dirt bikes or scooters – would clog roadways and could easily shut down the event. Though the event has always directed its proceeds toward prostate cancer research, this will be the second year funds are also going towards suicide prevention. In
2015, the volunteer ride host in Atlanta took his own life, and this caused the addition of funding suicide prevention. “Since this decision, it became very clear that many of the people closely connected within our networks have suffered depression themselves, and that it was a timely reminder to speak to someone when in time of crisis,” said Hawwa. JC, the founder of the Movember Foundation, has said that the passion and support for the event is overwhelming. “If we can get men to ride together and have conversations, then we can help change their behavior and help prevent men from dying too young,” he said. The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride will be held worldwide on September 24, with Pensacola holding its own ride. UWF Center for Entrepreneurship expands outreach under new leadership The University of West Florida College of Business recently named Dr. Ed Ranelli director of the Center for Entrepreneurship, where he will continue outreach initiatives. Ranelli served as dean of the College of Business from 2000 to 2013, and was named dean emeritus of the college in 2014. He assumes responsibility for leading the Center for Entrepreneurship, which was founded in July 2015 through a $1 million gift commitment from Quint and Rishy Studer. The purpose of the Center is to encourage and support educational initiatives related to entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial-thinking while serving as a comprehensive resource for economic innovation for students, industry and community partners. “One of my joys as a professor at UWF has been to help launch students into successful careers and lives,” Ranelli said. “Through the Center for Entrepreneurship, we strive to expose students from many disciplines to entrepreneurial thinking, and help all students to develop skills and attributes such as perseverance, integrity and relentlessness that will help them achieve entrepreneurial success.” Another major goal is to seed and feed innovation and entrepreneurial thinking through engagement and interactions with established entrepreneurs and executives in business, technology, engineering, mathematics and the arts. The Center will provide opportunities for students to engage with guest speakers in the Idea Space in the UWF library and in their UWF classes; participate in mentorships and internships with community partners; work on realworld problems and case studies; and job shadow experienced CEOs and community leaders. Pensacola business and community leader Quint Studer serves as entrepreneur-in-residence, and other business and community leaders and UWF faculty will be invited to take part in fellowships with the Center for Entrepreneurship. “I have known Dr. Ranelli since
1996 when we were both at Baptist Health Care,” Studer said. “It will be great working with him to introduce UWF students to the wonderful learning experiences available at the many excellent companies in the area.” “As entrepreneur-in-residence, Quint is team-teaching a class on entrepreneurship and sharing his experiences as an entrepreneur and a transformational community leader,” Ranelli said. “Other successful entrepreneurs serve as guest speakers to share their stories with students about how to succeed in their careers, businesses and lives.” As the Center aims to expand interest in entrepreneurship, toolkits will be offered to faculty, particularly in STEAM disciplines, to aid them in exposing non-business students to entrepreneurial programs such as Business Model Canvas and The Lean Startup. The Center will host a series of lectures and events this fall to promote innovation and entrepreneurship among UWF students and community members. The first will be “Innovate Like da Vinci,” held on Sept. 6 at 4:30 p.m. in the John C. Pace Library Idea Space. Studer will also present on how to be successful in career and life on Sept. 20. On Oct. 5, 2017, the Center will host the Da Vinci Innovation Celebration, where UWF students are invited to participate in presenting innovative concepts from any discipline they choose, with local entrepreneurs serving as judges. More than 20 cash prizes, totaling $5,000, will be given away to student presenters. The lectures at the UWF library’s Idea Space will serve as preparation sessions leading up to the event. In addition to supporting UWF students with experiential learning, the Center continues to work with the Small Business Development Center and the Studer Community Institute in offering counsel to local businesses. government entities had to employ at least 15 workers in Florida and have been in operation at least one year. Companies that chose to participate underwent an evaluation of their workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems and demographics. The process also included a survey to measure employee satisfaction. The combined scores determined the top companies and the final ranking.

Explosive growth in Pensacola
Pensacola is seeing “explosive growth” in population and new development as the city approaches record numbers in population. The City’s population as of the 2010 Census was 51,923. Our current preliminary population estimate for 2017 is 54,071. This is an increase of 2,148 since 2010. Pensacola has several new developments expected to bring more jobs and housing to the city, including the VT MAE project and several housing developments. “I’m proud to say that the numbers are booming,” Hayward said. “Pensacola is now being known as a city that is very fast-growing. We are in explosive-growth mode as a city.” This current estimate does not take into account the population that the residential units currently in various stages of completion within the downtown area will bring. It
also does not include the multiple residential subdivision plats that have been approved in recent months. Our upward trend in population growth and overall urban density should not only continue, but significantly increase. “It’s exciting to see that Pensacola is becoming what we envisioned when I first ran for office,” Hayward said. “That’s a testament to being a healthy community and doing things right.” These numbers are prepared annually by the Bureau of Economic and Business Research (BEBR) at the University of Florida. They issue population estimates based on “active residential electric meters” in the City limits in the intervening years between official census counts. While the 2000 Census population of Pensacola was slightly higher at 56,255, we appear to be consistently rebounding from the loss in population numbers.

SCOTT WANTS TOURISM, BUSINESS-RECRUITMENT AGENCIES TO REJECT EMPLOYEE BONUSES By JIM TURNER THE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA
Gov. Rick Scott wants to do away with bonuses for employees at the state’s tourism and businessrecruitment agencies, at least for now. After fighting with the Legislature earlier this year to keep the agencies funded, Scott on Thursday rejected the bonuses “at this time.” Scott sent a letter to members of the boards of directors at Enterprise Florida and Visit Florida outlining his opposition to the employee rewards. “Employees are the key to success in any organization,” Scott, who serves as chairman of Enterprise Florida board, said in the letter. “But, after a long legislative session where the spending at these organizations was greatly debated, I do not believe that employee compensation should include bonuses at this time.” Instead, Scott advised the agencies to review employee pay “to ensure that everyone is being compensated fairly relying on salaries rather than bonuses.”
Enterprise Florida President and CEO Pete Antonacci—Scott’s former general counsel who was recently hired by the agency—also floated a proposal that would do away with the worker rewards this year. But Antonacci later agreed to revisit the plan. Members of the Enterprise Florida executive committee questioned Antonacci’s initial plan on Aug. 21. Some members of the executive committee expressed concern that withholding performance pay, when employees have done an “admirable job” in difficult times, could result in an exodus of experience. Enterprise Florida spokesman Nathan Edwards said Thursday that Antonacci is continuing to work with members of the Finance & Compensation Committee. No decisions regarding the bonuses have been finalized, Edwards said. Last October, Enterprise Florida handed out $448,662 in performance pay to 57 employees. A similar arrangement had been set up for the current year, before Antonacci joined the agency. Meanwhile, Visit Florida announced last week
that the tourism agency, which gave out $440,915 in bonuses to 119 employees in May, was considering ending its merit rewards. Both agencies maintain that the bonus programs use money from private funds, not taxpayer dollars. The possibility of scuttling bonuses came after the House this year sought to eliminate both Enterprise Florida and Visit Florida. The Senate and Scott ultimately blocked the House’s efforts. In the end, the Legislature slashed state money for Enterprise Florida’s daily operations from $23.5 million last year to $16 million for the budget year that began July 1. Along with the revised funding, lawmakers also imposed new rules such as increasing financialdisclosure requirements and prohibiting the use of tax dollars for performance bonuses or severance pay unless authorized by law. In part because of the disclosure rules, 12 regional tourism organizations --- including Visit Tampa Bay, Visit Orlando and the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau --- cut ties with Visit Florida.
UNIVERSITIES SEEK FUNDING BOOST IN 2018 SESSION
But at the same time the university By LLOYD DUNKELBERGER Gov. Rick Scott’s direction, have been he noted a majority of the degrees are THE NEWS SERVICE OF frozen. Florida ranks 49th among the now being awarded in programs of system is asking for a budget increase, states in average tuition and fees, ac- “strategic emphasis,” including health the schools also had to prepare plans FLORIDA The Florida Board of Governors on Thursday approved a $5.1 billion budget request for the state university system, including a $100 million increase in state performance funding. The request for the 2018-2019 academic year includes an additional $179 million in state funding, or a 3.6 percent increase. Also, the 12 universities outlined another $326 million in spending proposals for consideration during the 2018 legislative session, which starts in January. The request follows a year in which the university system received a major funding boost, including $121 million to allow schools to hire “world class faculty” and to support high-performing medical, law and business graduate schools. It follows a trend where state support for the university system has grown by nearly $1 billion since the fall of 2010, according to a report from Tim Jones, the Board of Governors’ vice chancellor for finance and administration. Under the new budget request, state funding of $3.1 billion would be coupled with just under $2 billion in tuition, meaning the state support represents 62 percent of the budget. The university system’s budget has risen from $3.5 billion in 2010-2011 to about $5 billion this year. At the same time, tuition rates, under
cording to the College Board. Florida’s average tuition of $6,356 was well below the national average of $9,547 for public universities. The increase in state funding for universities has been coupled with performance standards, which measure the schools on metrics like graduation rates and job placement for graduates. The 2018-2019 budget request reflects that trend with performance funding increasing to $690 million next year, including the $100 million increase in state funding. If approved, performance funding will have more than tripled since the 2014-2015 academic year, when it was $200 million. Performance has been improving, with the board hearing an update on its strategic goals during the two-day meeting at the University of Florida. Tom Kuntz, chairman of the Board of Governors, noted universities are retaining second-year undergraduates at a rate of 86 percent, which is a 9 percent improvement since the 20052006 academic year, with the board’s goal set at 90 percent by 2025. The six-year graduation rate for the system is at 66 percent, with a 70 percent goal. And the four-year graduation rate is at 45 percent, with a 50 percent goal by 2025. Kuntz said the system is falling short in its effort to produce 90,000 baccalaureate degrees annually by 2025, but
professions, science and engineering. Other highlights in the budget request include a $5.1 million increase for the engineering college jointly run by Florida A&M University and Florida State University; $3.6 million for New College of Florida’s growth plan; and $40 million to allow more “cluster hiring” of faculty and researchers across the system. In addition to the board’s budget request, the 12 universities are advancing another $326 million in spending proposals for consideration in the Legislature. Florida State and the University of Florida each want $25 million more in funding awarded to “pre-eminent” institutions. UF also wants another $60 million for the “world-class scholars” and high-performing professional and graduate school programs, while FSU is seeking an additional $45 million for those programs. The University of South Florida is asking for $20 million in pre-eminence funding, with expectation that the Tampa-based university will join FSU and UF in reaching that level of performance in the next year. Florida Gulf Coast University is seeking $32 million as part of an effort to bring its per-student funding up to a level similar to other institutions. The Board of Governors agreed to look into the proposal.
to cut their spending by 10 percent in the next year, which would represent a $291 million reduction. Although not likely to be adopted by the Legislature in total, the budget reductions can be used by the governor and lawmakers as they shape the next state budget. The universities said a 10 percent cut would diminish much of the progress the schools have made under the increased funding and performance standards over the last few years. For example, UF said a $62 million cut, if not offset by other revenue, “could not be spread across the university without significantly reducing quality, impacting the pre-eminence program and stalling UF’s drive to rise among the top public research universities.” FSU said a 10 percent cut “cannot be absorbed through efficiencies or trimming around the edges.” “Rather, a $34.8 million reduction would unravel the progress FSU has made in recent years toward student success and faculty development,” the school said. Florida International University said a $23 million cut would force a reduction of 169 faculty and staff members along with losing the ability to enroll 2,800 new students.
tions and performance expectations for supervisors. In a letter Wednesday to Brown outlining the suspension, FHP Director Gene Spaulding noted Brown sent an email to subordinate commanders on July 28 “encouraging 2 citations per hour” from troopers working the Statewide Overtime Action Response program aimed at curbing speeders. “Following a review, it was discovered that other supervisors under your command forwarded similar directives and, as we had previously discussed, it is not appropriate to request that a trooper write a specific number of citations,” Spaulding wrote. In addition to Brown’s suspension, an FHP release noted that an early retirement request from Lt. Col. Michael Thomas --- submitted Monday --- was accepted and that Spaulding and Terry Rhodes, executive director of the Florida Department of Highway
Safety and Motor Vehicles, have discussed the prohibition on quotas with all command staff. “In accordance with the August 10 memo to FHP command staff from Executive Director Terry L. Rhodes, FHP command staff were directed to ensure no quotas were or are imposed within the agency,” the release from the FHP said. “FHP has completed its review of command staff correspondence that stemmed from emails sent by the former lieutenant colonel of the Florida Highway Patrol.” Thomas, the second-highest ranking officer in the FHP and a 30-year veteran, had acknowledged he wrote an email in May encouraging troopers to write at least two tickets per hour as part of the statewide program to curb speeding. The email said, in part, “so we can encourage our members to maintain our 2.0 citations per hour ratio, as we attempt to provide a safer
driving environment for Floridians.” Thomas’ resignation followed the resignation of Maj. Mark Welch, a troop commander who oversaw eight counties near Tallahassee and had served the state for more than 35 years. Welch announced his retirement after acknowledging he also sent a July 28 memo to troopers that they interpreted as a mandate for a ticket quota. “The patrol wants to see two citations each hour,” Welch wrote in the memo. “This is not a quota; it is what we are asking you to do to support this important initiative.” Welch, whose memo was the first to be reported by the news media, submitted his resignation on Aug. 16, the day Attorney General Pam Bondi said during a state Cabinet meeting she was “troubled” by Welch’s directive, which she called “a stupid statement.”

A Florida Highway Patrol regional commander got a three-day suspension as the agency completed an internal review about whether troopers received quotas for writing traffic tickets. The agency has maintained there are no quotas, but the controversy resulted in the exit of two other high-ranking agency officials. The three-day suspension without pay of Chief Mark Brown from his $118,000-a-year position as the North Florida operations regional commander was announced as the state agency said it has completed its review and is enacting new guidelines. SENATE RENEWS PUSH FOR HIGHER ED CHANGES
But as part of the annual budget, By LLOYD DUNKELBERGER as opposed to being put into law, the THE NEWS SERVICE OF changes are not permanent. FLORIDA Universities would have to develop block tuition plans by next fall, and expansions in Bright Futures scholarships and need-based aid programs would become permanent under a Senate bill filed Wednesday. The legislation (SB 4), filed by Senate Higher Education Appropriations Chairman Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, revives major parts of a highereducation bill (SB 374) passed during the 2017 legislative session but vetoed by Gov. Rick Scott. A key difference is the new bill, which will be considered when the Legislature convenes in January, does not include measures related to state colleges. Those issues will be filed in a separate bill by Senate Education Chairwoman Dorothy Hukill, R-Port Orange. Scott vetoed the 2017 bill citing concerns about the impact on the state college system. Senate President Joe Negron, a Stuart Republican who has made elevating the state university system a top priority of his presidency, told the system’s Board of Governors on Wednesday that even with Scott’s veto of the policy bill, a major portion of the Senate’s higher-education initiative is already having a positive impact on the 12 state institutions. Most of the Senate proposals were included in the new $82 billion state budget, including a record expansion of need-based aid and a major boost in Bright Futures scholarships, which are merit-based.
Negron told the Board of Governors, meeting at the University of Florida, that the idea behind the new Senate bill is “to make these tremendous gains permanent and to continue to build this vision” for an elite university system. One provision in the bill would make permanent the expansion of the Bright Futures scholarships for the highest-performing students, known as “academic scholars,” to cover 100 percent of tuition and fees and to pay $300 per semester for books. Also, it would permanently allow academic scholars to use their Bright Futures awards to cover summer classes. A new provision in the bill would expand the Bright Futures scholarships for “medallion” scholars to cover 75 percent of their tuition and fees. The scholarships now cover $77 of each credit hour, which average about $215 per hour across the university system. The new bill also revives a proposed requirement that universities develop block tuition plans, where students pay a flat fee per semester rather than a credit-hour charge, with the new tuition plans taking effect in the fall of 2018. “I think block tuition makes sense for a school like us,” said Michael Martin, the new president of Florida Gulf Coast University. “For one thing, it would create a reasonably good incentive for a student to carry as big a (class) load as they possibly can.” Martin said it would help more students graduate quicker, which is one of the key performance standards for schools.
Kent Fuchs, president of the University Florida, said he likes the provisions in the bill that would bring permanency to the expansion of the need-based and merit-based financial aid programs. “Any kind of aid that is a combination of need aware and based on merit really supports those students who are bright who can go to college anywhere but they can’t afford it, so we support that too,” he said. Florida State University President John Thrasher, who helped create the original Bright Futures program when he was in the Legislature, said it’s “a great thing for students” to restore the scholarship program to cover full tuition, as it was originally designed. “I think it should be fully funded,” Thrasher said. “I’m proud of Joe (Negron) for doing that.” Scott said he has not seen the new Senate bill but supports the permanent expansion of the Bright Futures scholarships. “I’ve been very supportive of making sure we fully fund Bright Futures,” Scott told reporters in Jacksonville. “I want to make sure that our students have Bright Futures that are covered both in the summer and cover all their costs.” The new Senate bill also would authorize programs to help schools attract top-level professors and reward high-performing graduate schools. The current budget included $121 million for those programs, but the funding would be in doubt in subsequent years without the legislation. The bill would also require schools seeking to become “pre-eminent” institutions, which qualifies them

for more state funding, to meet a 60 percent four-year graduation rate. But the bill would allow schools, like the University of South Florida, that are expected to reach pre-eminent status in the next year to use the current standard of a 70 percent six-year graduation rate. The bill would also impose a fouryear graduation standard for all schools seeking performance funding. The formula now uses a six-year graduation measure. Several financial-aid provisions did not survive Scott’s veto of the policy bill but would be renewed with passage of the new Senate bill. Among them, it would double the state match for scholarships aimed at “first generation” in college students. Currently, it’s a one-to-one match for the funds. A provision to extend to outof-state students the Benacquisto scholarships, which pay full tuition for National Merit Scholars, would also be authorized in the new bill. Even without the out-of-state extension, Negron said funding in the budget increased the Benacquisto scholars to 873 this academic year, up from 665 last year. The bill would also create a new scholarship program for students from farmworker families. The Senate bill would prohibit university and state college foundations from using public funds to pay for travel. And by 2023, it would prohibit the “direct-support organizations” from using public funds to pay for personnel. --- News Service staff writer Jim Turner contributed to this report.
DEVOS CALLS FOR CHANGES DURING EDUCATION GATHERING By JIM SAUNDERS THE NEWS SERVICE FLORIDA
OF
U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos gathered Wednesday with about a dozen leaders of Florida business, higher-education and advocacy organizations to talk about reshaping the education system to offer more choices and to better prepare students for jobs. DeVos, during an hour-long meeting in a conference room at the Florida Chamber Commerce, urged the leaders to “double down” on efforts to expand choices for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. DeVos has long been a major supporter of voucher programs and charter schools. She pointed to the “notion that for too many years we’ve tried to have too many top-down approaches --- be it from Washington or, in some cases, from the state level --- to try to fit all children into one box.” “I think we have a lot more creativity that can enter the K-12 system,” DeVos said. “I don’t like to refer it to as a system. It needs to be a system of options, a wide range of options, of approaches to education that we haven’t even really thought of yet
because it has been, for the most part, such a closed industry. And I use that term very intentionally. It is a large industry.” The warm reception at the meeting was a sharp contrast to criticism DeVos received Tuesday from the Florida Education Association teachers union and Democratic gubernatorial candidates as she toured a Tallahassee private school and a charter school. DeVos has been one of President Donald Trump’s most-controversial Cabinet appointments, at least in part because of her stances on issues such as school choice. Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gwen Graham, for example, issued a statement Tuesday saying “DeVos’ for-profit approach to public education is just flat-out wrong for Florida.” During Wednesday’s meeting, DeVos urged a rethinking of the federal government’s role in the education system. “I think that there’s been an outsized footprint in the last couple, three decades on the part of the federal government in education,” she said. “And it’s my goal to extract us from a lot of those spaces. I will welcome your thoughts on what we need to be doing less of. And if there are areas
to be doing more of, what are those areas?” DeVos spent a large chunk of the meeting listening to the participants who sat around a large rectangular table. Along with the Florida Chamber, they included officials from Gulf Power, JPMorgan Chase, the Holland & Knight law firm, Nemours Children’s Health System, Keiser University, the Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida, Tallahassee Community College, the Florida Children’s Council, The Able Trust and Lumina Foundation. Mark Wilson, president and CEO of the Florida Chamber, and Stan Connally, president and CEO of Gulf Power, said that developing a talented workforce is critical for economic development in the state. “In Florida, we believe that talent is replacing the tax incentive as the most important tool for economic developers,” Wilson said. Some of the participants told DeVos about the importance of earlychildhood education and developing reading skills at young ages. “This really is a cradle to career conversation,” Connally said. “Education is cradle to career. (We’ve) learned so much about what happens in
that cradle, about the number of words the child hears and how it influences their ability to learn.” After the meeting at the Florida Chamber, DeVos held a roundtable discussion at Bethel Family Life Center in Tallahassee that was expected to include K-12 officials and leaders of historically black colleges and universities, according to the U.S. Department of Education. During the Florida Chamber meeting, DeVos said she sees a need to have the K-12 and higher-education systems work better together. “For too long, there have been real silos around that (higher education) work at the federal level. There’s very little interaction between those who work on K-12 policy and those who are working on higher-ed policy. I think that that has to change,” she said. “I think we also have to be much more intentional about communicating with students as early as middle school the wide range of options that they have to pursue beyond high school. I think we’ve done a disservice to young people for many years to suggest that they all have to go to a four-year college or university in order to be successful.”

Family Features
usy school days demand meals that can match the pace of life. A Mexican-themed meal is a sure way to keep things festive and lively around the family dinner table. Not only does a meal centered on Mexican-style foods let you spice up your menu, it also allows for plenty of personalization so even the pickiest of palates can be satisfied. That means less time for preparation and more time spent together. Put a fresh twist on your next school-night fiesta with these ideas: n An
ethnically-inspired meal is a great opportunity to encourage kids to try out new flavors and experiment with foods they wouldn’t normally eat. Sample variations of classic salsas, incorporate seasonal ingredients like jicama and diced sweet peppers to freshen up your dishes or put a spicy spin on a classic Italian favorite by creating Mexicaninspired stuffed shells.
n Get
creative with proteins. Chicken and beef are common options, but heart-healthy fish and shrimp are also great candidates for a Mexican-style meal. Pork is another good choice for many Mexican dishes, and beans provide an excellent source of added protein, along with some flavor variety.
n Mex-up
your taco night. Try an alternative to the traditional corn shell with an option like Ortega Good Grains Taco Shells, crafted with artisanal blends of real corn, unique grains and ingredients baked into each shell. They’re made with whole kernel corn, giving them an authentic taste and a distinctive flavor, aroma and texture.
n Keep
things kid-friendly and fun by focusing on finger foods. A large taco can be difficult for little hands to handle, but a street taco portion, a chimichanga or even nachos are more hands-on.
n Look
for fun toppings that add an extra crunch. For example, new Ortega Crispy Taco Toppers, lightly breaded slices of real jalapeno or onion, provide a bold kick and are the perfect finishing touch for tacos, salads and even Mexican-style burgers.
n Don’t
forget dessert. No meal is complete without a sweet treat, such as a churro, flan, empanada or sopapilla. Many of these favorites can be prepared ahead of time so you can simply cook and serve for a perfect ending to your family fiesta.
