What does it mean to be a “good Samaritan”? Typically, when we hear the term we think of a charitable and helpful person; a person who acts in favor of the greater good, who aids another without a thought of how he or she might be advantaged (or disadvantaged) by helping. Following the spirit of the new year and the season of resolutions, we could think of no better way to celebrate than by highlighting how one local do-gooder has been inspiring countless local students to do bet-

None other than William “Uncle Bill” Willis. Uncle Bill spent his career as a high school teacher, bringing history to life as an American and European history teacher

before finally retiring in 2015. He sponsored a high school academic team, “Brain Brawl,” at Pine Forest and it often produced champions. “Bill was an exemplar teacher, impacting the lives of thousands of students,” said Gordon Smith, leader in rallying help for Uncle Bill’s Surprise

Dream Trip. “That was enough to inspire us to return in a small way the big investment he made in us. As we pulled this gift together, we also learned of the impact he made with his coworkers by mentoring faculty, the love that he brought to his family and community, and the contributions he makes to his congregation. Truly, he makes a difference in all his worlds.” For many of Bill’s students, he admirably blurred the line between “formal” and “extended family,” which is why so many refer to him as “Uncle” Bill. After finding out that Bill had made a Facebook post saying he was finally giving up on his lifelong dream to visit Italy, the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance that holds special meaning for history-buff Bill, for health and financial reasons, one of Bill’s former students, Gordon Smith, expressed his concern on social media and asked a few classmates if they were all feeling the same way. Within a week, the small group of alumni had a secret Facebook page set up, a “caring conspiracy” if you will, which was titled Uncle Bill’s Surprise Dream Trip, where even more of Bill’s students joined and pitched in their

ideas and enthusiasm. “As we came together to secretly surprise him, we found so many others whose experiences were similar and in many cases so much more profound,” explained Gordon. “The students whose lives he touched were left with a particular and unique mark, and we all cherish it still.”

Thanks one member in particular, they opened an account on YouCaring.com, which at last count had as many as 134 contributions totaling $15,550 to the surprise trip fund. In addition to Gordon, who helped rally together the rest of Bill’s rag-tag group of alumni from over the course of his teaching career, there were a few students who took the lead in organizing various areas of the trip plan—from travel, destinations, and fundraising to planning a party. In fact, several students had become travel agents, which helped the group indentify an array of options for Bill’s surprise trip. The steering committee, as Gordon called it, consisted of: Anne Bradley (Bill’s sister), Christine High-

committee scouted a variety of options suited for Bill’s health needs. Since the committee didn’t want Bill to travel by his lonesome on his dream trip, the budget was doubled so he wouldn’t be traveling alone. They also considered what Bill would need to go out of the country, including small details like passports and spending cash. The crew also set aside money for Bill’s mother, since he is her primary caregiver, so her needs could be met while Bill was away. As Gordon explains it, getting people to donate was a crash course in fundraising for him; he relied heavily on advice from Christine, as well as his understanding of Kickstarter campaigns and annual NPR drives. The key was gently reminding people the chance to donate was there, without annoying them, so the team started with weekly updates that received a pretty quick and im-

pressive response. The best part of it all? Uncle Bill’s legacy carries on in his students who went on to become teachers themselves—as well as doctors, lawyers and more, all of whom became successes in all walks of life and all of whom point to Bill as an inspiration. In fact, because of the overwhelming responses and number of donations, the committee had considered other goals of letting Bill go on other trips, take care of bills, or possibly using leftover funds to start a scholarship in his name for the generations to come.

While the details are still being finalized, it looks like Bill will be targeting a trip to Italy in spring of 2017. It goes without saying that Bill has touched the lives of many, including those now reading his story. National Flight Academy Receives $50K Sponsorship from Brookley Aeroplex Companies As a result of a collaborative effort between the Mobile Airport Authority Foundation and Brookley Aeroplex companies, 36 students from two Mobile, Ala., high schools will be sponsored to attend the National Flight Academy’s six-day Deployment program on June 4, 2017. The Brookley Aeroplex STEM Initiative is a collaborative effort of the Brookley Aeroplex aviation business community and is funded through sponsorships from Continental Motors, Airbus Americas, VT Mobile Aerospace Engineering, Alabama Power, Star Aviation, Signature Flight Support and the Mobile Airport Authority Foundation. The total sponsorship investment is more than $50,000 and covers the six-day Deployment tuition and bus transportation for all students to the facility. Using a competitive application process, the Brookley Aeroplex sponsors, along with representatives from B.C. Rain High School and the Alabama School of Math and Science, will identify participating children in 10th through 11th grades. The National Flight Academy’s deployment adventure begins on a landlocked, virtual aircraft carrier, AMBITION (CVT-11). Students live aboard for six days and experience theme parkstyle thrills surrounded by advanced technology, flight simulators and virtual reality missions that ignite imagination and encourage learning. This partnership allows the above organizations to work together to inspire and engage students in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics with a goal of promoting workforce development. “THE NFA STEM program sponsored by the Brookley Aeroplex aviation business community

is a way for us to be involved in the community and help the next generation see the value of focusing on STEM while in school,” says Rhett Ross. “Our goal is to excite the next generation of workers to realize that there are great careers with great pay as long as you leave high school with a STEM foundation.” Another component of the Brookley Aeroplex STEM Initiative incorporates facility tours and job shadowing of participating companies. Students will gain real-world skills and hands on learning experiences while developing 21st century skills needed for success. “It is an honor for us to partner with the Brookley Aeroplex aviation business community in their effort to invest in the next generation,” said Gen. Duane Thiessen, chief executive officer and president of the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation. “By exposing students to various workplaces then applying skills at the National Flight Academy, they can better align their passions and make early connections to the employment available to them,” he furthered. UWF Fall 2016 Commencement honors John Appleyard, marks milestone for Bense UWF President Judy Bense addressed graduates at the Fall 2016 UWF Commencement, noting the significance of Commencement ceremonies in marking a momentous milestone from college to career. She emphasized the unique importance of this Commencement in her own life, as well. “Today, I’m preparing to celebrate a new beginning right alongside you, as I step down to take a year sabbatical before returning to the University as a faculty member once again,” said Bense. Additionally, during the morning ceremony, John Appleyard was recognized for his significant impact on the University and Northwest Florida. Appleyard, prominent author, historian and founder of the John Appleyard Agency Inc., was named an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in honor of his commitment to preserving the history of Pensacola and Northwest Florida.

“John’s career and life’s work exemplify his commitment to celebrating the assets of the Pensacola community and the University of West Florida,” said Dr. Martha Saunders, executive vice president and provost. “He epitomizes the type of intellectual curiosity and commitment to community engagement that are hallmarks of the UWF community.” Appleyard and his wife, Eleanor, founded the Appleyard Agency in 1959, where he served as CEO until 1993. UWF alumnus Darrell Gooden invests $100,000 in UWF football University of West Florida alumnus Darrell Gooden, founder of Gooden Homes, has gifted $100,000 to the UWF football program. Gooden’s contribution will help address the growing program’s facility and equipment needs. In recognition of the generous gift, the UWF Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will name the new Student-Athlete Academic Center in his honor. “This is a way for me to give back to UWF for a great education and to Northwest Florida for all the success I have

achieved over the years,” Gooden said. Gooden, a Pensacola native, studied accounting at UWF and said he attributes much of his professional success to his college education.
