Home on the Ranch Written by Hana Frenette • Photos by Guy Stevens

Tucked away off a quiet country road in Jay is a sprawling ranch where thousands of beautiful European fallow deer graze peacefully. The property, known as Santa Rosa Ranch, encompasses more than 620 acres of rolling grassy hills, oak-lined trails, wooded forests, and a handful of lakes and ponds. The land was formerly used as a hunting preserve, but once Missouri deer farmer Kevin Grace purchased and opened the ranch last fall, the area has served as a family day-trip destination, farm, and educational environment for all who visit. In addition to the deer, the farm is also home to horses, miniature ponies, antelopes, pygmy goats, bunnies, pigs, ducks and a few dogs—all of which are available to pet and feed throughout the day. Tucker Bramon, Project Manager for SSR noted one of the most exciting opportunities on the ranch takes place during the summer and continues through the fall. “For about five to six months out of the year, we have a cool opportunity for kids to come out and bottle feed baby deer, as long as they’re here at 11am or 4pm. Next year when they come back, they’ll be able to see the babies they fed, playing in the fields,” Bramon said. Currently, children and adults alike will be able to pet and bottle feed three wobbly-legged fawns by the names of Bambi, Bolt, and Pistol Annie, who were all born on June 10. While the deer, ranging in color from spotted and tan, to white, to

chocolate brown, are the main attraction, the farm offers a multitude of activities and attractions. “We have things hidden all over the place and you could easily entertain yourself for a few hours or more,” Bramon said. A popular attraction is the hayride, which takes guests on a leisurely 40-minute ride through the hills and trails of the property, stopping every so often to allow hayriders to feed the deer they encounter near the edge of the forest or the open meadows. The deer range in age, with the older deer displaying wide full antlers covered in velvety fur like you’d expect to see on an a moose and the month-old deer ready to run with the herd, showing off their newly spotted coats. Second to the hayride, fishing trips have also been a very popular option and Bramon noted the ranch will be increasing their space for fisherman in the near future. “We have a large lake and 12 small ponds that wrap around the property. We’ve started out on a small scale and have opened just one large pond for fisherman as of right now,” he said. “We have bass, catfish and brim out here, and we do catch and release as well as

catch and keep.” The ranch also offers a few options for primitive camping in the wooded areas. Guests arrive on the grounds, and can ride around the property with Bramon and select their site for the evening, sometimes joined by as little as one or two other campers. “We’ll eventually have a dedicated site with RV hookups and a couple cabins,” Bramon said. All-day entrance to the farm is $10 a person, with children under two entering for free. Military guests enjoy a 50 percent discount off their entrance fee. All day fishing passes are $20. “We want people to come out and stay for two to three hours at

pits and picnic tables are also scattered throughout the main area of the ranch, allowing guests the opportunity to grab a stick and roast a hot dog or smores provided at the onsite snack stand. While the ranch has been open for less than a year, big plans for the property are already underway. “We’re going to be expanding the farm in quite a few ways— we’ll be putting in a bigger zip line across the lake, possibly bringing in a ferry and creating a walking path around the lake so we can host events like 5ks and what not,” he said. The farm is still in its early stages of operation but has already won over visitors from around the panhandle with its friendly, fami-

ly-oriented staff and modest, authentic ranch life experience. The ranch has operated for close to a year with virtually no advertisement whatsoever, aside from positive Facebook reviews and word of mouth, which Bramon said has allowed them to open without the

stress of large crowds. The Ranch staff is planning for camping accommodations and a long list of fall activities for the cooler months in hopes of bringing even more people out to experience the ranch. The ranch has seen as many as 300 people on the farm in one day for field trips and family gatherings, and Bramon hopes to continue to increase their daily visitors as more people learn about the ranch. In the fall, he hopes to create a fall festival event on the farm which would include a pumpkin patch and pumpkin carving, warm apple cider, corn mazes, campfire grilling, hayrides, and of course many opportunities to feed and pet fawns. “Once I had the opportunity to come out here and become involved with the ranch, I wanted to share it with as many people as we could and make it as inviting as possible,” Bramon said. Bramon moved to Santa Rosa County last year from Kansas City, Missouri to be closer to his mother. “I’ve been blessed to help create a vibe that’s unlike anywhere else around and want everyone to feel at home while they’re on the ranch,” Bramon said.”

It is free to the public, and all who are interested in the cause are encouraged to attend to lend their experience and viewpoint. Beginning at 1 p.m. on August 23rd at Sanders Beach-Corinne Jones Resource Center, 913 S I Street, the keynote speaker, Caren Goldman, Executive Director and co-founder of Compassionate St. Augustine and author, will begin the discussion of building a community centered on compassion and reconciliation to counter current trends of divisiveness. Caren will be joined for comments by her husband, Rev. Ted Voorhees, vicar of St. Cyprians Episcopal Church in St. Augustine and the partnering founder of Compassionate St. Augustine. Panelists will provide personal and professional insight into identifying origins and influences of divisions in our community, be they political, economic, racial, faith based, or cultural. Pensacola Museum of Art announces fall exhibition, Rebels With a Cause: American Impressionist Women

The Pensacola Museum of Art announces the exhibition “Rebels with a Cause: American Impressionist Women” which will be on view from Sept. 8 through Dec. 31 in the Henderson Thornton and Kugelman Family galleries located on the second floor of the museum. The exhibition is organized by the Huntsville Museum of Art, located in Huntsville, Alabama, and features 54 works consisting of paintings, drawings and sculptures from the Sellars Collection of Art by American Women. The exhibition will have a closing reception on Dec. 1. “Rebels With a Cause” presents a selection of works by female artists active between the mid-19th and mid20th centuries who rebelled against the conventions of their day by exhibiting alongside their male counterparts, receiving awards and clearing a path for future

artists. The collection of paintings embody the early influence of French impressionism and its precursor, the Barbizon Style. The works feature characteristics of the American impressionist style, but also reach beyond impressionism’s strict definitions reflecting individual artistic approaches. Today, art historians are rediscovering the significance of these female artists and establishing their rightful place in the expanding narrative of American history. Subjects include accomplished florals and still-lifes, elegant portraits, engaging genre scenes, and landscapes both intimate and panoramic, reflecting many different regions of the country and world. Located at 407 S. Jefferson St. in historic downtown Pensacola, the Pensacola Museum of Art is open Tuesday through Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 5

p.m., Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon until 4 p.m. The Pensacola Museum of Art stewards a growing collection of modern and contemporary art of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. The permanent collection supports the museum’s mission to collect, preserve and interpret objects of visual, cultural and educational value to promote the understanding and appreciation of art and ideas to audiences in the Northwest Florida region and beyond. The museum offers a wide range of educational and cultural programs year-round, including artist talks and lectures, museum tours, adult art workshops, children’s classes and camps. ANTONACCI TAKES CUES FROM SCOTT, ENTERPRISE FLORIDA BOARD By JIM TURNER THE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA

Expect little change in direction of the state’s business-recruitment agency under its new management. Pete Antonacci, a former general counsel for Gov. Rick Scott who was appointed last month as president and CEO of Enterprise Florida, said Monday he intends to maintain the goals of the agency’s board, which is chaired by the governor. “My agenda tends to be the board’s agenda and the governor’s agenda, and that is to do what you all do, which is to make your communities in Florida a better place to live, work and raise a family,” Antonacci said. Antonacci was appearing at a meeting of the Stakeholders Council, which kicked off two days of Enterprise Florida committee and board meetings at The Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort. The board will meet Tuesday. Antonacci was formally named president and CEO on July 24 after two years at the helm of the South Florida Water Management District.

Antonacci’s first day with the public-private Enterprise Florida was Aug. 2, but he noted Monday’s meetings were essentially his first day “on the ground” with the agency. “I don’t come with any particular agenda except a desire to learn,” Antonacci said. “As you know, this is my first day in the economic development world. So you have much to teach me, and I have a great deal to learn.” Antonacci, who has been offered a salary of $165,000 a year, said he’s been working with staff to get up to speed on the inner workings of the agency. In making the hire, Enterprise Florida Vice Chairman Stan Connally, who is also chairman, president and CEO of Pensacola-based Gulf Power, noted in July that Antonacci may not be experienced in business recruitment but that the watermanagement district executive director has proved to be a “quick study.” Enterprise Florida had been working under interim director Mike Grissom since March, following the abrupt departure of Chris Hart from the top position.

Hart, the former leader of CareerSource Florida, was hired in November as president and CEO of Enterprise Florida but left the position in March. Hart pointed to a difference of opinions with Scott on the future of the agency at a time when House Speaker Richard Corcoran, R-Land O’ Lakes, was pushing to eliminate Enterprise Florida. Rather than meet Scott’s request for $85 million for incentive money that could be offered to individual companies, the Legislature created the “Florida Jobs Growth Grant Fund,” which set up a similar-sized pool of money for infrastructure and job-training programs to help entice businesses to Florida. Antonacci comes in with a long history with Scott. In March 2012, Scott appointed Antonacci to complete the term of Palm Beach County State Attorney Michael McAuliffe, who had left for a job in the private sector. After Dave Aronberg was elected to the state-attorney job later that year, Antonacci became Scott’s general counsel. Antonacci served as Scott’s general counsel until early 2015.

DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES VOW TO BACK ANTI-DISCRIMINATION LAW that his campaign has been hindered By LLOYD DUNKELBERGER Floridian, no matter what color their him,” he said. Graham recounted her support for skin is, where they come from, or who by an ongoing FBI investigation into THE NEWS SERVICE OF they love,” Graham said in a prepared marriage equality during her successful Tallahassee city government, although FLORIDA Three Democratic candidates for governor pledged Saturday to support legislation that would prohibit discrimination in jobs and housing based on sexual orientation. Despite support from the business community, the legislation, known as the “Competitive Workforce Act,” has stalled in the Legislature in recent years. Also, a call for Gov. Rick Scott to use his executive power to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation in state agencies has gone unheeded. “If you elect me governor, you won’t have to wait any longer,” Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum told the LGBTA Democratic Caucus, which represents the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. “Florida is too big, too proud, too diverse a state for our politics to reflect an error of yesteryear, yesterdecade, yestercentury,” Gillum said during a caucus conference in Tallahassee. Candidate Chris King, a Winter Park businessman, said passing the antidiscrimination law is both morally and economically right for the state. “I want to make sure everyone is comfortable here, everyone is safe here, everyone is protected here,” King said. Former U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham of Tallahassee said she would work to “stop discrimination in its tracks.” “We’re going to protect every

text of her speech Saturday night to the caucus. All three candidates said, if elected in November 2018, they would sign an executive order banning discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in state agencies. Two candidates talked about how ending discrimination was personal for them. King talked about the discrimination faced by his older brother, David, growing up as a gay man in the South. He said his brother, who moved to California, took his own life at age 30 after battling depression and mental illness. King said his brother’s experience has compelled him to make antidiscrimination initiatives a centerpiece of his campaign and underscored the importance of speaking “with moral clarity on these issues.” “I promise you I will,” King told the caucus. “I will give it my best shot.” Gillum said his older brother, Terrance, faced similar discrimination as a young gay man in Gainesville, moving to California as soon as he could “so that he could live and be himself.” Gillum said throughout his 15-year public career he has spoken out for LGBT issues. “Not only because it’s the right thing to do but it was my little way of showing my big brother that I saw

2014 campaign for Congress in a North Florida district that covered some of the most conservative regions in the state. She said it was one of the first questions a reporter asked her in a Panama City stop. “I proudly told him if one of my sons or daughter were gay, if one of your children were gay, I would want them to be happy, and that means supporting them no matter who they want to marry,” Graham said. King, who is an affordable-housing developer, said he will also stress an economic message in his campaign. “I don’t believe a Democratic candidate is going to win in 2018 if we don’t win the economic debate, if we don’t convince folks that this party has a vision and has a plan to lift up people and make this a more fair, homegrown economy,” King said. He said he would work to improve affordable housing, expand healthcare coverage and support public schools. Gillum said Democrats need a “bold” message on issues like discrimination, climate change and health care and need to advocate it statewide. “We have to give voters a reason to choose us. It’s not going to be by capitulating. It’s not going to be by Republican-lite,” Gillum said. “We have to offer a different, bolder vision.” However, Gillum acknowledged

he said he has been assured he is not a target of the investigation and is fully cooperating with federal investigators. “I’m 1,000 percent confident that when the facts are all the way known I will be removed from under this cloud,” Gillum said. Graham said she has proven her political viability by winning election to a North Florida congressional seat, while not wavering on traditional Democratic issues. Graham did not run for a second term in Washington after the district was redrawn and became a Republican stronghold. “I stood up for my values on marriage equality, for a woman’s right to choose, for protecting the environment --- and you know what, not everyone agreed with me, but they knew I said what I believed and believed what I said,” Graham said. She also said she followed through on her campaign promises once in office. “Folks aren’t used to public servants actually doing what they say,” she said. Terry Fleming, president of the LGBTA Democratic Caucus, said the group has not endorsed a candidate but will consider it after the candidates formally qualify next year. Other potential Democratic candidates include Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine and Orlando trial lawyer John Morgan.
