TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS By Josh Newby

S

tudents from UWF are taking the classroom to the boardroom recommending strategy and presenting marketing plans to businesses looking for help. If every interaction in life is a learning opportunity, then students at the University of West Florida College of Business are getting a head start on real-world management and marketing techniques by interfacing with local businesses in desperate need of their help. It’s called live case studies, and it takes students away from boring textbook anecdotes about problems far-away businesses have faced and places them in the boardrooms of local companies looking to solve problems. As workplace expectations change and the workforce is increasingly competitive, employers are looking to hire even entrylevel applicants who already have some experience. When profit margins are tight and time means money, it is imperative that business students and fresh hires can hit the ground running. Enter the incorporation of real-world experience with classroom duties and credits. While capstone projects and internships generally look to improve soft skills and provide directed integration of textbook theories with the real world, research has shown that live case studies can actually teach hard skills, such as executive strategy, as well as more interpersonal attributes like communication. This is particularly true with those who do not have a lot of experience in the workplace, such as college students. These live case study exercises do not replace an internship, however. In fact, the current body of research shows that when used in tandem, or when immediately following an internship experience, the live case study process can further improve applied project learning outcomes beyond those of either experience alone. Locally, it all started when student team consulting projects were instituted in two MBA class-

es when Tim O’Keefe was director the program. The experience resulted in increased application of learning as part of the curriculum and often to published peerreviewed cases that can be used as learning tools by any program worldwide. “When I became dean, my goal was to push those experiences down into the undergraduate program,” said O’Keefe. “At first, a few faculty members signed on for the experiment. This past year we had over 25 percent of our full-time faculty incorporating these type of experiential learning opportunities into their classes resulting in over 50 engagements involving more than 250 students. Several students have had three or more of these experiences during their undergraduate studies here and report added confidence in the interview process because they can describe to recruiters specific ways they have applied their learning to actual business problems.” In fact, students of everything from marketing and social media to management are taking part in the program, which is just about a year old. They have worked with places like Scenic Hills Country Club, Boneheads, ISS Global, McMahon & Hadder and AccountingFly. “We work with the Florida Small Business Development Center to vet the company, then place students in charge of gathering pertinent information,” said Sherry Hartnett, professor of internet marketing and social media marketing classes. “We put together what we want the students to learn and analyze, and then they make recommendations to tie in with what we’re teaching.” Recently, Hartnett led groups of students to look at digital marketing initiatives. The students met with the “clients,” compiled information on marketing and website analytics, then suggested changes. Another group looked at a social media platform and website and suggested campaign ideas to the clients.

“Oftentimes, these businesses do not employ marketing professionals; that’s not necessarily their specialty,” said Hartnett. “So when we come in, we’ll notice that a website might have a lot of good content and photos, but the website is not easy to navigate. It might be difficult for users, so students will actually map out a different homepage layout and navigation structure, to make is easier for customers.” Hartnett finds that the skills necessary to learn from the client, synthesize the real-world information with textbook theory, and present a cohesive campaign suggestion are easily translated to real-world business success. “They learn skills like how to deal with ambiguity,” said Hartnett. “They learn how to move forward with incomplete information, deal with people’s personalities, and be kind but confident.” While success of the campaign is often difficult to forecast at the end of the semester, when grades are due, professors grade the students on their application of classroom ideas and how they handled themselves in engaging with the business. “The business owners may have a unique challenge or simply want a fresh perspective from college students. All people involved gain from the experiences and the Florida SBDC serves as a mediator between the clients and the students,” said Kelly Massey, who teaches for the MBA program. “Students have the chance to be a consultant and log session notes into our client consulting database. Clients are engaged with the university and helping mentor future business owners and leaders.” Students are not the only ones who benefit, of course. Business leaders report great success with the campaigns and are enthusiastic about giving back to the community in this way. “Business owners overall are pleased when being paired with student teams for live case projects,” said Massey. “Many Florida SBDC at UWF clients have com-

mented how impressed they are with the College of Business students and the recommendations they provide. Particularly feedback has been on how the students researched a new avenue of the client’s business, sought additional lower-cost marketing options and offered insight into expansion opportunities.” These positive benefits extend beyond strictly business applications, too. A class on managing front office operations under the hospitality management major have completed front-desk training and developed procedure manuals for local hotels, including the Holiday Inn Resort in Fort Walton Beach and the Hampton Inn & Suites in Navarre. Marketing Essentials students conducted a case study for Okaloosa Gas Company, which included recommendations for service scheduling and delivery, as well as communication. “At the end of each semester

project, the student teams give a presentation to the clients,” said Massey. “The student teams provide research, data and best practices to support their recommendations. Business owners can ask them questions and provide constructive criticism at that time. Every semester at least one client says that they would love to hire all of the students from their project, if they had the budget and availability to do so.” Word of the live case study has spread as other businesses in the area are chomping at the bit to take part in this mutually beneficial relationship. For students, the experience is a valuable one that provides a rare chance at executive strategy and networking while pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree. For businesses, a fresh pair of eyes and a young approach to an age-old business might just be the sheen they need to boost those ever-important profits.

For students, the experience is a valuable one that provides a rare chance at executive strategy and networking while pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree.

Murphy, Grayson Tangle in Contentious Senate Primary likely to back the establish- gations. But Murphy used the By Jim Turner issue as a justification for not The News Service of ment candidate. Any possibility of a sur- debating Grayson this month. Florida prise in the primary may Grayson, while talking to Democrats have their sights set on flipping Florida’s U.S. Senate seat up for election this year, as they try to retake a majority of the Senate. But it’s been a bumpy primary campaign for Democrats, regardless of Republican incumbent Marco Rubio’s late-breaking decision to run again. The Democrats’ Aug. 30 primary is dominated by two congressmen with vastly different political approaches: Patrick Murphy, a centrist backed by the White House, and Alan Grayson, a longtime darling of Bernie Sandersstyle progressives who is loathed by the party establishment. Also in the field are: Pam Keith, a labor attorney from Miami; real estate developer Roque “Rocky” De La Fuente who lives in Orlando; and personal injury attorney Reginald Luster of Jacksonville. The winner will take on the top vote-getter in the Republican primary, which includes Rubio, who decided in June to seek another term in the Senate after losing a bid for the White House. The betting money in the Democratic primary leans toward Murphy, at least in part because of the White House star power mixed with an expected low primary turnout that will be dominated by voters who are older and more

also be dimmed as the top contenders have turned off many reliable voters without attracting new people to the polls, said Susan MacManus, a political-science professor at the University of South Florida. “It’s a just a race that has lost a lot of punch,” MacManus said. “Each side (the Murphy and Grayson campaigns) has been able to well-establish the flaws of the other. Initially, people thought it was going to be highly competitive. But as people are exposed to the shortcomings of the opponents, people just aren’t so interested anymore.” University of Central Florida political-science professor Aubrey Jewett wouldn’t rule out a “comeback” by Grayson. But he noted Grayson has lost a lot of ground because of domestic-abuse allegations by his ex-wife. Those allegations emerged after Murphy faced allegations that he had inflated his resume. “It seems that the allegations of abuse against Grayson took the wind out of his campaign sails and allowed Murphy to get off the ropes after it seemed the meme about Murphy exaggerating his accomplishments would sink his campaign,” Jewett said. Grayson has repeatedly denied the domestic-abuse alle-

cal ranks, it’s Rubio. “I’m not the owner of the Senate seat,” Rubio said. “I have to go out and earn it every six years if I want to seek re-election, and they have every right to run and be a part of the process.” In some ways, Rubio and Beruff are mirror images of each other. Both were born in Miami to Cuban immigrants of modest means. Both have done well in America. Then, the break. Rubio, 45, is prepared, smoothspoken and polished, a man who looked robotically programmed in a presidential debate. Beruff, 58, is brash, less given to five-point answers than Rubio but also less likely to come off as someone who’s just mouthing the talking points—or someone who has any talking points at all. That has drawn comparisons to Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, the man perhaps most responsible for Rubio’s changed reelection plans. Beruff doesn’t entirely reject the idea. “English literature is not one of my strengths. Math is,” Beruff said. “I speak right to the point 99 percent of the time.” In Beruff’s telling, he’s up against a man who is simply setting himself up for another presidential run in 2020 should Trump fail to win the White House. The theory, which is hardly confined to Beruff, is that if Rubio were working for a law firm in Miami or carrying on in some other job, it might be harder to keep up his profile. “I’ve told hundreds of people, I’ve said: ‘Look, if you think Marco Rubio is going to Washington and in his heart he’s there to serve you as a public servant for the next six years—hell, vote for the guy.’ But the reality is, everybody knows he’s going to Washington for his own political future, because he doesn’t have a future anywhere else,” Beruff said. Critics bore in on Rubio’s missed votes—53 percent, by Beruff’s count—while he was running for the White House, and Rubio’s occasional grumbling on the presidential campaign trail about the state of the chamber that likes to consider itself the

reporters this month on a tour bus prior to a campaign stop in Tampa, called Murphy’s reasoning to back out of the debate as a “lame excuse.” “The pro is that the public sees that he is a coward,” said Grayson, who often appears to be on crusade against Murphy and the party’s Senate leadership. “He’s been exposed as the corporate shill and faker that he really is.” Murphy, whose campaign appears to be focused more on Rubio, has avoided engaging in a verbal confrontation with Grayson. “I’m focused on my election,” Murphy said while campaigning recently with Vice President Joe Biden in Tallahassee. “And I think Congressman Grayson’s lost quite a bit of credibility, and I think voters have a very stark difference here in the two candidates.” Born in Miami, Murphy, 33, grew up in Key Largo. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Miami, then passed the certified public accountant exam in Colorado in 2009, a year before going to work at his father’s construction business. Murphy, in his first campaign, defeated Republican tea party favorite U.S. Rep. Allen West in 2012 for the Republican-leaning Congres-

sional 18 seat that includes St. Lucie, Martin and northern Palm Beach counties. Murphy was re-elected with 60 percent of the vote in 2014. Murphy’s been ranked among the most conservative House Democrats but has also received praise for his attention to constituent services and for backing water bills that seek to help clean and protect the Indian River Lagoon. But this year Murphy has been on the defensive for having been registered a Republican prior to running for office, a $2,300 donation to the presidential candidacy of Mitt Romney in 2007 and votes in Congress on matters that went against the positions of liberals and the White House. Those votes dealt with issues such the Keystone XL pipeline and the creation of a congressional committee after the 2012 Benghazi attack to investigate former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. While Republicans may not openly admit it, they appear to prefer facing Grayson in the November general election. The National Republican Senatorial Committee and a group known as the Senate Leadership Fund have relentlessly attacked Murphy through emails that highlight each gaffe and negative news report. Grayson, 58, was born in the Bronx. He worked his

way through Harvard, earning an economics degree in 1978 and a law degree five years later. He clerked at the Colorado Supreme Court and the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals. His portfolio grew—he’s been ranked among the wealthiest members of Congress—as president of a New Jersey-based company created to lower the cost of international phone calls and later as a trial attorney. Grayson, who lost a congressional primary in 2006, won the then-District 8 seat in Central Florida in 2008, defeating Republican fourterm incumbent Ric Keller by 4 percentage points. Grayson, knocked out of office two years later by current U.S. Rep. Daniel Webster, returned to Washington in 2012 by easily winning the newly created Democratic-leaning District 9. Grayson, who prolifically files and pushes bills, made headlines by trying to restrict salaries of Wall Street executives as their companies were bailed out by the federal government in the recent recession. However, Grayson has faced questions about a Cayman Island hedge fund that he has said is a “family investment partnership” that abides by the directives of securities lawyers. Also, Grayson’s tendency to speak his mind, such as describing the GOP’s health care plan as “don’t get sick,”

has drawn admiration from progressives but scorn from both sides of the political aisle. Senate Minority Leader Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., has called on Grayson to drop out of the Senate race over allegation that he used his position as a sitting member of Congress to solicit investments into the hedge fund, which would violate federal law and House rules. This year’s campaign took a unique turn in May when Grayson married Dena Minning, a physician and medical researcher whom he had been dating and who is now running for his House seat as Dena Grayson. Topping the rest of the field is Keith, a labor attorney who was a judge advocate while serving in the U.S. Navy, and has worked in Washington, D.C. and as a senior labor and employment counsel for Florida Power & Light. “It is my belief that winning Florida (in the presidential race) is going to turn on African-American votes, on Latino votes, and women, and I’m the only candidate that actually helps our presidential nominee in all three categories,” Keith said while campaigning in May. “There are some who would question whether Alan Grayson helps in those communities. And I doubt anybody makes a straight-faced argument that Patrick Murphy puts anybody at the table not already coming.”

Rubio Battles Beruff After White House Bid ‘Didn’t Work Out’ A year ago, this—”this” being a too-warm, newly opened Republican Party office in a strip mall in Panama City—is not where U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio expected to be. Back then, Rubio was still experiencing largely favorable coverage of his chances of winning the Republican presidential nomination. He had confidently ruled out running for re-election to the Senate, where partisan gridlock frustrated him. But here he was this month after all, a few doors down from Emerald Coast Eye Care, signs for his recently minted re-election bid plastered all over the walls of the Republican Party of Florida’s “Victory” office. Rubio gave a brief pep talk to supporters before lingering to shake hands, pose for pictures and autograph still more signs. “I ran for president, and I wanted to win,” Rubio told a reporter a few minutes later in a cooler back room. “It didn’t work out. I quite frankly wasn’t going to run. I was going to take some time and do some different things.” But Rubio is running again for a Senate seat that he was ready to vacate, a seat some critics say he had already vacated, a seat that at times seems almost as much like a form of captivity for Rubio as it does a prize. Even when he reconsidered, it was prompted in part by party leaders who virtually begged the incumbent to get back in the race to keep it from falling to the Democrats. Already, Rubio looks to be focusing on that autumn challenge, a potentially competitive general election that might decide whether the GOP holds onto its Senate majority. In the meantime, he faces a primary against largely outmatched opponents, the most prominent being wealthy home builder Carlos Beruff. And while the senator and his team clearly feel good about their chances of winning the nomination— well, if there’s anyone who understands the perils of underestimating an outspoken, independently wealthy candidate from outside the politi-

world’s greatest deliberative body. “How dumb can we be to vote for a guy that says he doesn’t like his job and he doesn’t want to do the job and we’re going to keep on paying him a salary?” said Ernie Rivera, 58, a longshot candidate who has sunk about $500,000 of his own money into the race, according to his campaign. Dwight Mark Anthony Young, of Clearwater, is also in the race. Federal Election Commission records do not reflect any contributions to Young. In a recent Suffolk University poll of voters who said they were likely to vote in the Aug. 30 primary, Young drew 1 percent of the vote and Rivera got no support. Rubio brushes off the criticism of missed votes, listing presidential candidates going back to John F. Kennedy who have missed time in the Senate to stump for the presidency. “But I can tell you we never stopped working,” Rubio said. “Even on the campaign trail, our office was continuing to get involved on the issues to help Floridians, and there were numerous occasions when a major issue came up, or an issue our vote would make a difference on, where we stopped campaigning and went back to D.C.” Rubio is also ready with a list of accomplishments from his first term. Legislation sanctioning Hezbollah and the government of Venezuela. A bill providing more accountability at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Addressing an array of Florida issues, from red-snapper season for the Gulf to the water fight with Georgia that threatens Apalachicola Bay. If he gets re-elected, Rubio said he’ll continue to focus on national security issues like terrorism and the strength of the military, weigh in on nominations to the U.S. Supreme Court and continue to help Floridians who run into problems with the federal government. For all his criticism about Rubio being in the race to keep political prospects intact, there is a sense of inertia to Beruff’s campaign as well. He’s amused by fellow

businessman Todd Wilcox’s decision to abandon the race; the implied contrast is that Beruff is toughing it out, despite being an overwhelming underdog. The Suffolk poll showed him down 50 points, 62-12; some earlier surveys were less kind than that. “At the end of the day, I knew that I had committed so many dollars to this race the day I made the decision to get in, and I do believe that there’s a certain amount of people that are fed up with sending people to Washington that say one thing and do another, and really don’t have the skill set,” Beruff said while discussing how the race changed when Rubio announced. Campaign-finance reports, which currently list activity through June, say Beruff had already plowed $4.2 million of his own money into the race. In August, Beruff spoke of his total investment being somewhere around $8 million or $9 million.

Beruff touts a plan to scrap the Affordable Care Act and much of the policy that preceded it, building a new system from scratch that would be designed by experts. It would be beta tested for a short period of time, then replace the current framework for health care—and, Beruff is confident, save the taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars in the process. If there is a tangible criticism of Beruff, it’s that he gave money to former Gov. Charlie Crist’s 2010 U.S. Senate bid. Crist would later leave the Republican Party and run against Rubio as an independent, losing a threeway race. Beruff has said he didn’t support Crist after the governor left the GOP; PolitiFact rated “mostly true” an ad from a super PAC that argued that he did—though without evidence of a direct endorsement. Beruff told a reporter the claim about him supporting Crist is “b.s.”

In the end, it might not matter that much. Beruff would have to make huge gains to overtake Rubio and deliver a final humiliation to a man who once seemed a few good months away from the presidency. Then, if Rubio can defeat the Democratic nominee—either Congressman Patrick Murphy or Congressman Alan Grayson, in all likelihood the speculation will begin about whether he might change course again. Standing in a back room in Panama City, instead of on a stage in Iowa or Ohio, Rubio didn’t directly answer a question about what might be in his future plans. “I’m running to serve for the next six years in the U.S. Senate,” he says. “I want to make our mark there. No one knows what the future holds for anyone. But my plan is to hopefully go down as one of the best senators Florida’s ever had, and I know there’s more work to be done.”
