The pride of Pensacola, the genius of the green, Bubba Watson is known for his multiple green jackets and a larger-than-life personality, but the world will soon know him as an Olympian, too. He grew up in Bagdad, Fla., little more than a shot-making drive from his new business venture, Bubba’s Sweet Spot, in the heart of downtown Pensacola. He began the beautiful game at age 6 and slowly developed his abilities through middle and high school before earning himself a gold scholarship to the University of Georgia. Since then, it’s been title after title and PGA Tour after PGA Tour. This accomplished golfer and good ole’ Southern boy will be making his hometown proud in the Rio Olympics this year. Pensacola Magazine caught up with him to hear about his game, his legacy and more. Catch him on the Olympics broadcast Aug. 11 through 14 and17 through 20. Talk about your relationship with Pensacola. I was born and raised here. The city has given me so much. Somebody sponsored junior golf tournaments when I was young so I could get exposure and learn. For me, it’s about coming back. I’m thinking about my legacy so I’m trying to create jobs and make sure the city stays here for many, many years. This is how I want to come back and help the city that helped me. I’m not just a golfer. Golf has enabled me to do a lot of things, but I do have a passion for those other things. How has the Sweet Spot been? It’s been amazing. We wanted the soft opening to learn. This is my first time in a real business. We asked for people’s comments as far as what treats they like and what flavors they like. We’re still learning, but we’re headed in a good direction, the workers are enjoying it, and my mom hasn’t yelled at me yet. Everybody is smiling and not one person is upset. It’s just fun. When you look at trying to get people downtown and trying to grow the area, every big city around the world has a treat shop. This area, Palafox and Main, is a perfect location. I’m a kid at heart. How do you feel about the Olympics? In my own career, these are

some big weeks coming up. I’m excited to play for my country. I know what a Ryder Cup feels like. I know what a President’s Cup feels like. I played on the USA team in South Africa when I was in college, so I know what that feels like. There’s going to be other athletes performing that I want to see. So I’ll be a fan, and then when I get on the green I’ll be a participant. It’ll be amazing. What do you feel the dynamics are going to be? The Master’s is pretty much a world level, but even this will be a different event. I’m going in there blind. I think it’s going to be amazing. I can’t wait to be there. I’m going to be a fan since this is the first time I’ll get to be there in person. Will you be watching Justin Gatlin? For sure, I can’t wait. As a 34-year-old, that’s not supposed to happen in that sport. But he keeps impressing people. He does stuff you can’t believe. I’ll definitely be hanging out with him and talking to him. I’ve always said that Pensacola is so special. There are a million sports but so many greats come from here, like Emmitt Smith and Derrick Brooks. They mean so much to kids here. It’s so special to me to be an Olympic ath-

lete for them. Pensacola is a lot bigger than you think when you think about what we’ve created in the world of sports. Any trepidation about the Zika virus? Are you bringing your family? I have no concerns. We’ve adopted our kids, so we weren’t worried about the birth defects. I’m not worried about the security concerns either. As soon as they said, “You’re on the Olympic team,” I was in. There’s no fear on my side. I’m not bringing my family. They don’t travel outside the U.S. because of time changes and the like. But mainly, I need my sleep. It’s mainly about my sleep, so they’ll stay here. How’s your game going? Golf is a funny sport. It’s all about emotions. If I get enough sleep, I can keep my emotions in check and stay focused. I’ve improved a lot over the British Open. My swing is where I want it. These have been some good weeks for me. I’m looking forward to competing. I know you’ve appeared in a lot of humor videos for charity. Tell me about your philanthropic passions. I’m passionate about kids in all levels, not just in sports. We’ve adopted both of our kids so obviously adoption and foster care are very big on my heart. Also, military. I want to do as much as I can do for military because of the freedoms they give us. I get to play golf because of that. Our country, I believe, is the greatest country in the world. Those causes are very important to me—kids and military. Are you looking to form your schedule around majors or is it more important to you to win tournaments? I believe that every tournament is a major. If there was a tournament here in Pensacola like there used to be, it would be a big deal for the city—both in terms of revenue and charity dollars. So every city we go to, it’s a big deal. I want to win tournaments. What would you like your legacy to be? A good friend, a good husband, and a good dad. The trophies, those don’t mean anything at the end of my life. It’s the most important things that all of us need in our life—to be a good friend, a good person, a good parent, a good husband or good wife.

You are notoriously faithful to the brand that sponsors you. Speak a little about loyalty. If you think about Pensacola, I was born here, I was raised here. There’s some business that sponsored junior golf, my sports programs, and helped it be cheap, affordable or free for me to play in those events, so I want to give back to them. I’m loyal to Pensacola. Pensacola gave me my values. Pensacola has helped me become the person who I am, the golfer who I am, and now an Olympic athlete. Why not come back and try to help out? Someone has helped this city in the past, and that benefitted me, so now I feel it’s my turn. Just like Lebron said, he was mature enough

to go home. As soon as he said that, I knew I was mature enough to go home. How do you feel the Olympics will help promote the PGA? If we do it the right way, the world will be watching. The countries that are passionate about golf will see it and get behind it. That’s the same thing that all the golf organizations want to do: they want to bring golf to the Olympics so the world can see it. It doesn’t matter if you win a medal or not; it’s about bringing the game global. I’ve learned a lot from Pensacola but I’ve also learned a lot from golf. It’s taught me more than just how to play golf; it’s taught me things outside of golf. It’s taught me about life.

Sacred Heart to Provide Free Screenings in August

During August, Sacred Heart Health System will provide free heart-health and osteoporosis screenings at locations in Pensacola and Navarre for adults who are poor, elderly or uninsured. Four locations will provide heart-health screenings; one location will be dedicated to osteoporosis screenings. Heart-health screenings will measure blood pressure, blood sugar and total cholesterol, and can detect anemia. The screenings are helpful in diagnosing conditions that put people at high risk for heart attack, stroke, diabetes and other health problems. Osteoporosis screenings measure bone density. Pensacola International Airport Has Lowest Airfares in the Region

Pensacola International Airport (PNS) leads the Gulf Coast with the lowest average airfares of any airport in the region, according to recent data from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The nationwide airfare data, released this month by FAA’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics, covers the first quarter of 2016. Pensacola led all airports in the region with an average fare of $454.77 compared to Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) at $463.41, Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport (GPT) at $472.22, Destin Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) at $512.26, Mobile Regional Airport (MOB) at $554.86 and Tallahassee International Airport (TLH) at $574.79. FMC Adopts Fort George Family

Renovations are underway at Fort George as a result of the generosity of Financial Management & Investment Corporation (FMC). FMC, a 60-year-old company, purchased the neighboring Knights of Columbus building at 519 North Palafox Street. After a recent city meeting, Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward connected with FMC CEO Tag Purvis and discussed the renovations of their current property. “We dropped by to see the renovations of FMC and to thank them for their investment. We then started talking about Ft. George, the park and the Battle of Pensacola,” said Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward. “Purvis expressed his interest in adopting the park and after connecting with the City’s Parks and Recreation Department, Purvis and the rest of his team dove straight into restoring the Fort.” “Fort George is a very significant piece of American history, that has the potential to be a showplace for the city,” said Tag Purvis. “We are thrilled to be a part of such a beautiful community. All of us here at FMC have fallen in love with Pensacola and greatly appreciate the warm hospitality that we have received in abundance since arriving into town.” Built by the British during their occupation of the city from 1763 to 1781, the fort was a major target during the Battle of Pensacola, one of the least known yet most significant battles of the American Revolution. The project site is a reconstructed part of the Fort George Memorial Park located in the North Hill Preservation District. “This is not a project that will ever be truly completed but a growing work in progress that we hope to better over the years,” said Purvis. The azaleas and grass have been removed in order for the installation of a new irrigation system. FMC will then replace the grass with fresh sod and restore the landscape. FMC is also part of a joint effort with local historians to add a plexiglass viewing spot on top of the deck of the fort so that visitors can look into the old soldiers’ quarters where period-appropriate exhibits will be on display. SCOTT CALLS FOR ZIKA PROTECTIONS FOR FLORIDA SCHOOLS THE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA As the Zika outbreak expands in Florida, Gov. Rick Scott on Monday directed education officials to protect students heading back to public schools, state colleges and universities, including distributing mosquito repellent to schools in South Florida, where the disease is the most prevalent. The majority of Florida’s 2.7 million public-school students return to classrooms on Wednesday, followed later in the month by hundreds of thousands of students beginning their fall semesters at state colleges and universities. The state Department of Health announced on Monday a new non-travel related Zika case in Palm Beach County, bringing to 17 the number of cases linked to infections acquired in Florida. That is on top of 357 travelrelated cases and another 55 cases involving pregnant women, for a total of 429. Leon County also reported its first travel-related case, meaning 30 of Florida’s 67 counties have cases stemming from people traveling outside the continental U.S., with Miami-Dade County claiming 106 of the total. The mosquito-borne virus, which emerged last year in South America, is particularly dangerous to pregnant women and can cause severe birth defects. “With the announcement of this new (Palm Beach County) case, and the upcoming new school year, I have directed DOH (the Department of Health) and DOE (the Department of Education) to closely work together to ensure students, parents, educators and district leaders have all the resources and guidance they need to combat the Zika virus,” Scott said in a statement.

Scott, who met with St. Johns County officials on Monday to review Zika response plans, said state health officials still believe the 17 Florida cases all originated in the Wynwood neighborhood in Miami-Dade County, with the person involved in the new Palm Beach case having recently traveled to Miami. But Scott has asked state health and education officials to take a number of steps to protect students across the state. Those steps include: --- Distributing insect repellent to public schools, colleges and universities in Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Martin and Monroe counties. --- Requiring schools and universities to have procedures in place to promptly deal with suspected Zika cases. --- Linking schools with local health departments so that clinic nurses and staff can be trained in the prevention and identification of Zika cases. --- Distributing posters, palm cards, door hangers and other Zika-awareness material to be used on campuses and sent home with students. --- Providing a Department of Health “teacher toolkit” that will allow teachers to include Zika messages and activities in lessons. --Distributing Zika awareness materials to voluntary pre-kindergarten and other school-readiness programs. “It’s a great opportunity to utilize all the resources that are available and our educators to help our students and our communities understand what to do,” Education Commissioner Pam Stewart said. Scott said he would meet with education leaders at all levels “to discuss what actions they are taking at their schools and campuses and we will continue to keep an

open line of communication with education leaders across the state.” As the Florida Zika cases increase, a major credit-rating agency has warned the virus could have an impact on the state’s tourism industry and related revenues, including sales taxes, gas taxes and hotel bed taxes. The Miami-Herald reported that Moody’s has warned Miami and Miami-Dade County about a potential “credit negative” if the Zika outbreak persists into the middle of the winter tourism season in South Florida and affects tourism-related taxes. The rating agency noted that a warning from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for pregnant women to avoid the Wynwood neighborhood is the first time in the CDC’s 70year history that it has declared a travel ban on a U.S. location. Meanwhile, Visit Florida, the state’s main tourismpromotion organization, has created a Zika web page to provide information and “talking points” on the mosquito-borne disease. Visit Florida said the safety of visitors, who totaled 106 million last year, remained the “highest priority” for the state’s tourism industry. It also noted the Department of Health’s belief that all the locally transmitted Zika cases “to date” are confined to the Wynwood neighborhood and buffer zone in Miami. “For perspective, that’s a one-square-mile area in a state that covers more than 65,000 square miles,” Visit Florida said.

JUDGE DENIES RACISM, SEXISM ALLEGATIONS By JIM SAUNDERS THE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA Three weeks after a state investigative panel accused him of making racist and sexist remarks, a Jacksonville circuit judge is flatly denying the accusations of inappropriate conduct. An attorney for Circuit Judge Mark Hulsey filed a six-page response Monday in the Florida Supreme Court rejecting allegations that Hulsey said blacks should “get back on a ship and go back to Africa” and that he referred to women staff attorneys as being “like cheerleaders who talk during the national anthem.” The document Monday said the accusations “do not allege that Judge Hulsey failed to properly adjudicate the cases in his division or that any litigant before Judge Hulsey was prejudiced in any way. Judge Hulsey further states that the allegations wrongly imply that he harbors ill-will toward female attorneys or African Americans.” It also disputed allegations that Hulsey referred to a female staff lawyer as a “bitch” and a “c---,” after she complained to the chief judge that Hulsey was overusing staff attorneys. “Judge Hulsey states that he treats all persons with whom he comes in contact as a judicial officer with proper courtesy

and respect,” the document said. The response also took issue with an accusation that Hulsey “exploited” a former judicial assistant by making her feel as if she had to handle personal tasks for him, such as paying personal bills. “Judge Hulsey denies exploiting his former judicial assistant or making her feel compelled to perform personal tasks for him,” said the response filed by Jacksonville attorney Michael Tanner. “Judge Hulsey admits that on two occasions in 2011, his former judicial assistant volunteered to, and did, drive Judge Hulsey’s wife to a medical appointment. She offered to do so because Judge Hulsey’s former judicial assistant used the same physician as Judge Hulsey’s wife and told Judge Hulsey she was happy to do so because that would allow him to avoid time away from the courthouse. Judge Hulsey denies that his former judicial assistant advised him that any task which she had expressly volunteered to do burdened her or created an unhealthy working environment.” The Florida Judicial Qualifications Commission on July 19 filed what is known as a “notice of formal charges” against Hulsey in the Supreme Court, which has ultimate authority to discipline judges. The

notice said the commission opened an inquiry this year after it became aware of a “continuing pattern of misconduct.” Hulsey is running for re-election this year in the 4th Judicial Circuit, which is made up of Duval, Clay and Nassau counties. He issued a statement last month denying the allegations, but the document filed Monday in the Supreme Court was the first detailed public response. In the response, Hulsey also requested that a commission hearing be held in Duval County on the allegations. The questions about Hulsey’s conduct spilled over last week into a death-penalty case that he handled. A lawyer for Death Row inmate Terrance Phillips, who is black, asked the Supreme Court to order an investigation into the allegations of racism against Hulsey, who in 2012 sentenced Phillips to death. “The integrity of the judicial system as it operated in Judge Hulsey’s courtroom is at issue. And the public is entitled to prompt resolution of the matter so that it will know if justice free from racial prejudice was administered, and if not when will it be,” Phillips’ attorney, Martin McClain, wrote in a document filed in the Supreme Court.

FLORIDA VOTE TOTALS SECURE THE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA Florida elections officials are pushing back on suggestions that this year’s voting results could be hacked or otherwise threatened by a cyberattack. Two recent columns in The Washington Post, including one by an expert in cybersecurity, raised the possibility of a foreign power hacking U.S. voting machines. But in an open letter to Florida voters, Chris Chambless --- president of the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections --- tried to tamp down any concerns. Chambless said cybersecurity for voting machines “is a matter of national security” but reiterated that there are no reports of a threat to elections results. He also emphasized that Florida has taken steps to

secure its ballot count and that virtually all Florida voters cast optical-scan ballots, which resemble standardized tests. “At the core of the security of Florida voting systems is the fact that we are a paper ballot state. ... Should any disruption or corruption in the transmission of vote totals occur, we can always refer to the original paper ballot,” wrote Chambless, supervisor of elections for Clay County. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has also raised the prospect of the election being “rigged,” but his accusations appear to hinge on voter fraud instead of security concerns.

EARLY VOTING STARTS NEXT MONDAY IN 24 COUNTIES THE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA Voters in 24 of Florida’s 67 counties will be able to cast ballots at designated polling places starting Aug. 15, according to the state Division of Elections. Early voting for the Aug. 30 primary is mandated from Aug. 20 through Aug. 27, but county supervisors of election have the discretion to begin sooner and to keep early-voting locations open on Aug. 28. Duval, Orange, Miami-Dade, Hillsborough and Palm Beach are among the counties that will open early voting locations --- typically libraries, elections offices, government buildings or community centers --- on Aug. 15. Other counties that will have facilities open that day

are Baker, Bradford, Calhoun Charlotte, DeSoto, Flagler, Gadsden, Hendry, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Lake, Levy, Liberty, Monroe, Okeechobee, Santa Rosa, Taylor and Washington. Sumter County will open early voting on Aug. 16, and Putnam County will follow on the Aug. 17. Clay and Dixie counties begin early voting on Aug. 18, and Alachua, Citrus and Nassau counties begin on Aug. 19. As of Monday morning, 279,134 voters had returned completed “vote-by-mail” ballots, 131,445 by Republicans, 108,593 by Democrats, 6,736 by people registered with minor parties and 32,360 by people without party affiliation.
