Spring toward Better Health

by Dawn Gresko

S

pring is in the air, but flowers aren’t the only ones who get to show off their transformation in full bloom. If you’re slim on motivation, consider the season of renewal as good a time as any to go through your own transformation in body and mind by trying something new in the world of fitness. Pensacola Magazine spoke with Breathe Yoga and Wellness Center, Pure Pilates, and Uru Yoga and Beyond, who guided us through three elevated exercises any person can try, including: circus-like aerial yoga, buoyant Kangoo Jumps, and core-building TRX Suspension Training. The professionals suggested TRX for core work, Kangoo for cardio, and aerial yoga for stretching and toning. So, don’t be shy about signing up for something new because all exercises can be adjusted according to your level of experience, and you can opt for either a private or public class. While we’re all guilty of making and not keeping those New Year’s resolutions of cutting back on junk food and working out on a regular basis, we’re here to show you there’s more than one way to spring your way to better health.

All postures are optional and students don’t have to do anything I suggest other than breathe.” Practicing aerial yoga has a lengthy list of health benefits, as long as you’re willing to soar in a swing at least one day a week. In addition to the benefits of shoulder strengthening and abdominal toning, as well as improved coordination, breathing and flexibility from regular training, aerial yoga reduces

Kangoo

Kangoo Jumps is the newest fitness craze and it’s everything your inner child could ask for: you get to have the fun of jump rope and bouncy houses, while simultaneously making a responsible adult decision for bettering your health. “Kangoo Jumps makes you feel like a kid,” said Clark. “You’re having fun and burning some serious calories at the same

Aerial Yoga

You don’t have to be a seasoned yogi, or yogani, to experiment with aerial yoga. Aerial yoga is a combination of traditional yoga poses done on the floor and postures practiced using a “trapeze,” called either a sling or swing, while suspended at waist height. The goal is to distribute your body weight between the fabric and the floor, allowing you to access traditional yoga postures in new and fun ways. The swing is made of the same fabric that aerialists use in the circus, and you get to look and feel like a Cirque du Soleil performer no matter your level of experience. “Just relax and have fun,” said Susan Clark, owner and instructor at Pure Pilates. “You are not competing with anyone, so be present, focus on the moment of the movement, and in the end you will feel a great sense of accomplishment.” For those who might be intimidated by the aerial yoga equipment, don’t worry: you won’t break the material, no matter how much you stretch out your flying fish or super person posture. “There is truly nothing to fear with aerial equipment as long as you are mindful during the practice,” said Tara Taylor, owner and instructor of Breathe

TRX Suspension Training is a blend of body resistance and suspension training that works the entire body. back pain, supports the joints, aides in spinal decompression, increases blood flow and flexibility, and relieves stress. “Each time you practice aerial yoga, you’ll learn one new movement or pose,” said Rebecca Sathre, owner and instructor at Uru Yoga and Beyond. “It’s important to take pride in those small successes and not become discouraged if you can’t conquer a complicated pose right away.” Ready to ascend like an aerialist? time. So, prepare to sweat. It will be a great full body workout!” The Kango Jumps rebound shoes, or Kangoo boots, are used for exactly what the name “Kangoo” implies: jumping around like the spring-legged marsupial of the Australian Outback—the kangaroo. The rebound shoes are designed to reduce impact on your joints by 80 percent, so they do not do not damage over time from healthy hopping. The shoes have a special Impact Protection System (IPS), which allows the

wearer to perform rebound exercises without fatiguing the legs and body from the hard stop of the floor. Those who utilize the Kangoo Jumps rebound shoes find the shock they would normally experience in an aerobic class is absorbed through the unique design of the shoe instead of in their joints. Positive results from consistent Kangooing include increased cardiovascular fitness, weight loss due to raising the body’s ability to lose fat, muscle toning, and in a few cases, improved bone density. Beginners start off by walking in the boots to find their balance and to get their equilibrium adjusted. After you are comfortable walking, you start jogging and jumping, then you just follow along with the simple and fun choreography prepared by Kangoo instructor Barbara Kielich at Pure Pilates. A good tip to remember is to go at your own pace and listen to your body. Tired of your old exercise routine, or just looking to make fitness feel less like a chore and more like recreation? Make the hop to Pure Pilates for a Kangoo class, or jump to purepilatespensacola.com for more details. TRX Suspension Training If you’re serious about sculpting your core, look no further than TRX Suspension Training. The system of exercise was developed by a Navy SEAL who wanted his body at peak performance for missions and the training blends the practices of total body resistance exercise (TRX) and suspension training for construction of your core, which includes not only your abs, but your pelvis, back and chest muscles, too. It’s a total body workout that you can literally do anywhere: set up either at the gym, home or at a hotel while you’re traveling, or even outdoors if you can find a stable column or tree to which you can attach the resistance bands. The TRX Suspension Training leverages gravity and your body weight to perform hun-

dreds of exercises with a single training tool—so you don’t have to worry about hitting the pause button so you can move to a different piece of equipment. The exercise isn’t as intimidating as it sounds and you don’t have to be a Navy SEAL to get your TRX Suspension Training on. All instructors are trained to modify exercises to suit each individual’s level. This means changing the person’s stance and changing the way the body is angled in relation to the floor and ceiling. Plus, you are in control of how much you want to challenge yourself on each exercise. “Although we don’t have beginner classes, any TRX Suspension Training class can be beginner level with simple adjustments to stance and angle,” said Clark of Pure Pilates. “If you get the muscle shake that means you are working hard, which is a good thing!” If you’re wondering who else is doing TRX Suspension Training, the answer is all branches of the US military, as well as Olympic swimmers, men and women’s sports teams, and even celebrities Gwen Stefani and Jennifer Lopez. A few of the benefits associated with the TRX Suspension Training system are developing a strong core, which supports the lower back and improves balance, as well as builds functional strength and the improvement of an individual’s anaerobic cardiovascular endurance. Dedicating at least 30 minutes of training for twice a week is a good place to start. TRX Suspension Training is a low-impact exercise that is easy on the joints and creates balance within the muscular system, which helps in cases of injury rehabilitation. However, you might want to avoid TRX equipment and training if you have shoulder injuries that prevent you from picking up and lifting things. Looking to build a hardcore core? Visit purepilates.com to find out more on TRX Suspension Training, or keep up to date with class schedules.

Museum Foundation to Host 30th Annual Naval Aviation Symposium The National Naval Aviation Museum opens its doors for another exciting glimpse into the history and future of Naval Aviation at the Museum Foundation’s 30th annual Symposium, May 4 to 6. The three-day event will feature a golf tournament on May 4, followed by panels and special events on May 5 and May 6. Throughout the symposium, attendees will have the opportunity to hear panel sessions that will include: Coast Guard Air: Into the Storm for 100 Years; Pioneers in Naval Aviation: Hall of Honor Enshrinement; and the Pensacola premiere of the documentary film, “The Millionaires’ Unit – U.S. Naval Aviators in the First World War,” followed by a distinguished panel who will discuss Naval Aviation’s posture, future challenges and current programs. An intimate, character-driven documentary set a century ago during the backdrop of World War I, “The Millionaires’ Unit,” tells the untold story of service and sacrifice made by a privileged group of college students from Yale University who formed a private air militia in preparation for the Great War. Named the First Yale Unit and dubbed ‘the millionaires’

unit’ by the press, these pioneer aviators became the founding squadron of the U.S. Naval Air Reserve. They were the first to fly and the first to die for their country during WWI. On May 5, the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation is hosting a cocktail reception at 6 pm on the flight deck followed by the screening of “The Millionaires’ Unit” at 7:30 pm in the Giant Screen Theater. Tickets to the cocktail reception and premiere are $75 per person and can be purchased by calling the Foundation Office at 850-453-2389. Begun in 1987, the Symposium series aims to preserve the rich history and proud heritage of Naval Aviation by highlighting historical events in which U.S. Naval Aviation has played a major role. Each May, the Foundation’s annual symposia attract an average of 1,500 to 2,000 attendees, among whom are active and retired military, defense industry representatives, the general public and extensive coverage by the media. Previous symposia subjects have included the Battles of Midway, space missions and programs, the Black Sheep Squadron, the Vietnam Wars and Operation Iraqi Freedom with such distinguished guest speakers as former President

George H.W. Bush, Governor Jeb Bush and Senator John McCain. The Symposium sessions are free and open to active duty and retired military, as well as the general public. Reservations for the Thursday Luncheon ($25/ person) and Thursday evening Reception and Banquet ($75)/ person) may be obtained by calling the Foundation at 850453-2389, or toll-free 800-3275002, or online at navalaviationmuseum.org. GRAYSON, JOLLY SHOW DIFFERENCES IN SENATE RACE By JIM TURNER THE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA A pair of Florida congressmen, who believe their parties’ voters will choose them to square off this fall for an open U.S. Senate seat, offered few surprises in responding to publicly posed questions during a debate Monday night. U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson, an Orlando Democrat, and U.S. Rep. David Jolly, an Indian Shores Republican, amicably debated for nearly 75 minutes during the live-streamed Open Debate Coalition event held at the University of Central Florida. Jolly mentioned several times his “Stop Act” legislation, which would prohibit members of Congress from directly asking for campaign donations --- a move that he argues would be a step to reform campaign financing. Jolly also said the federal minimum wage should be based on an index as is done in Florida but not an arbitrary $15 an hour; that life begins at conception; and that people now entering the work force should expect to see changes to Society Security. Jolly also diverted from many GOP leaders by saying the Senate should give Merrick Garland, President Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, a hearing before rejecting the appointment. “Rejecting the nominee because he is wrong on the Second Amendment and wrong on labor unions is not obstructionism,” Jolly said. “If they bring it up for a vote, vote him down. Ask the president to nominate a second person, one that could actually meet approval of Republicans in the United States Senate.” Grayson, a progressive firebrand who repeatedly mentioned legislation he’s filed, favored breaking up big banks; supported a hike in the national minimum wage; backed abortion rights; and supported increasing Social Security benefits for seniors.

Grayson said if a Democrat wins the White House this fall and Garland is still awaiting a Senate hearing, he would suggest the president withdraw the nomination. But Grayson also used the nomination to make the kind of argument that has led to support from progressive voters. “Under the original Constitution, AfricanAmericans were considered to be three-fifths of a human being,” Grayson said. “We’ve moved beyond that point, (but) now our first African-American president only gets seveneighths of a term.” Questions for the Open Debate Coalition event touched on campaign-finance reform, the future of Social Security, the expansion of solar power in Florida, funding for Planned Parenthood, increasing the minimum wage, student debt and the future of forprofit prisons. The questions were filtered by moderators from the most popular of the more than 900 submitted on the Open Debate Coalition website. Actor Mark Ruffalo introduced a question via a taped video asking about supporting climate-change legislation. Grayson quickly agreed with the question, which also asked if climate change is the “single greatest threat” to the world. “I can’t think of anything else that could literally destroy the planet. … We’re playing dice with the planet Earth that is very disturbing to me,” Grayson said. Jolly responded that while he’s willing to debate solutions to climate change, the nation’s biggest threats are terrorism and a nuclear Iran. “The greatest threat we face as a nation are people who wish to destroy us tomorrow,” Jolly said. In advance of the event, the two declared themselves the “front-runners” --- despite polls not agreeing with such an assertion --- and expressed a hope to

spur a series of such “open debates” in the manner of the verbal clashes between U.S. Sen. Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln during the 1858 Illinois elections. Monday’s event gave both candidates a chance to showcase politically divergent views without having to narrow their stances as they might during partisan debates before the August primaries. But critics, including Senate candidates not invited, said they didn’t see much difference between the candidates. The campaign for U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis, a Ponte Vedra Beach Republican, criticized the event as a “Democratic party debate.” “David Jolly repeatedly finds himself voting with Grayson on spending, religious freedom, and protecting IRS bureaucrats, so it’s no wonder he’s chosen to put himself before the Democrat party’s voters as their potential nominee for Senate,” DeSantis campaign manager Brad Herold said in a release prior to the debate. The event was announced as being open to candidates who averaged 15 percent or more in select public polling. U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy, a Jupiter Democrat, declined to attend, while the host of the event didn’t deem any of Jolly’s Republican opponents --DeSantis, Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, Orlando businessman Todd Wilcox and Bradenton developer Carlos Beruff --- as meeting the qualifying threshold. The Florida race is expected to be one of the more-important in the country, as Democrats try to win back control of the Senate from Republicans. Incumbent Republican Marco Rubio decided against seeking a second term, opening up the seat. But several early polls have indicated that voters know relatively little about the candidates in both parties.

AARP SEEKS TO HAVE SAY ON FPL RATE INCREASES THE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA

The senior-advocacy group AARP is seeking to intervene in a high-profile regulatory case about whether Florida Power & Light should be allowed to raise base electricity rates by nearly $1.34 billion over three years. AARP on Monday filed a petition to intervene with the Florida Public Service Commission, according to documents posted on the commission’s website. “AARP desires to advocate on behalf of the residential electric customers of FP&L in order to ensure that their rates are no higher than a level that is just and reasonable,’’ the petition said. “More specifically, AARP’s interest relates to how FP&L’s proposal may directly and adversely impact those customers who are aged 50 and over. People aged 50 and over are more vulnerable to increases in energy prices. These consumers also

devote a higher percentage of their total spending than do other age groups towards residential energy costs.” Already approved to intervene in the case have been the Florida Industrial Power Users Group, which includes large electricity users; retail giants Wal-Mart Stores East, LP and Sam’s East, Inc.; federal government agencies; and the South Florida Hospital and Healthcare Association. Also taking part in the case is the state Office of Public Counsel, which represents consumers. FPL formally filed the rate-hike request last month with the Public Service Commission. If the request is approved, the first increase of $866 million would take effect in 2017. The commission is scheduled to start a hearing in the case Aug. 22, according to document posted by the commission.

ARGUMENTS SET IN DISPUTE OVER IMMIGRANT ER CARE THE NEWS SERVICE OF FLORIDA

An appeals court will hear arguments June 7 in a long-running dispute between the state Agency for Health Care Administration and more than twodozen hospitals about Medicaid payments for providing emergency care to undocumented immigrants. The 1st District Court of Appeal scheduled the arguments Monday in the hospitals’ challenge to a ruling last year by an administrative law judge, according to an online docket. The case has involved major hospital systems across the southern part of the state and the Tampa Bay area, such as Lee Memorial Health System, the North Broward Hospital District and hospitals that are part of the Tenet Healthcare system. Hospitals are required to treat patients who show up for emergency care, but the legal dispute

has focused on the extent of care for undocumented immigrants that should be covered through the Medicaid program. Administrative Law Judge John D.C. Newton last year rejected arguments by the hospitals that the Agency for Health Care Administration had overstepped its authority in approving rules that address the duration of payments. In 2012, Newton ruled against AHCA in an earlier case brought by hospitals. That case stemmed from a change that AHCA made in 2010 to allow payments until patients were “stabilized.” The hospitals argued the change was made improperly and that it led to claims being denied. After that case, AHCA discontinued its use of what Newton described as the “stabilization standard” and changed the process for evaluating claims.
