Welcome to Rosemary Beach!

As many other headlines and articles across the country are proclaiming, our most recent trip around the sun has been quite a journey for us all in more ways than one. Our town has remained focused on following a thoughtful and prudent course of action to minimize the impact of this pandemic to our owners and guests, while taking very seriously our community’s role as a place where being outdoors with our friends and families has always been recognized here as an important part of our individual and collective well-being. As we all look forward to another exciting and successful summer, we hope you enjoy this latest issue of the Rosemary Thymes!

TOWN CENTER MILESTONE Speaking of the past year, another milestone in the community is now history— our Town Center is officially built-out! It was completed, development-wise, with the construction of the Georgetown (completed in 2018), the Orleans (also completed in 2018) and the Providence (completed in late 2020).

More important than the dates these mixed-use condominiums were completed, is that these buildings are now home to over a dozen new merchants. We hope you join us in welcoming them all to town, particularly those who have just opened at the Providence building, including: Faherty’s (clothing and accessories for men, women, and kids), Huck & Harlowe’s (a pet boutique), Rosemary Collection (clothing

COURTYARDS AND SUCH One of the characteristics of a well-designed urban neighborhood is the layering of outdoor and indoor spaces along a gradient from public to private. Does that sound like architectural mumbo-jumbo?

Indulge us a moment… In Rosemary Beach, this layering includes public space (the parks, streets, and avenues), semi-public space (the lanes and boardwalks), semi-private space (porches, courtyards,

lawns and many of the indoor commercial and restaurant spaces) and private spaces (generally most residential indoor spaces). While there is no strict definition of each term, the conceptual importance lies mainly in the different types of interactions that this layering sets up between people. Those curious about development may also be interested to know that our “public” spaces are actually privately-owned property, maintained by the POA for the benefit of our owners and guests as integral and inseparable elements of our community.

As you will read more about in one of our feature articles in this issue, courtyards have a special place in this architectural hierarchy, providing both amenity to the residents of the home in terms of an outdoor space for relaxing, cooking and socializing, as well as contributing to the aesthetic enjoyment of passers-by and the neighboring properties.

A courtyard is typically distinguished from a less formal side or rear yard by the addition of decking or paving to create a more structured “outdoor room.” Whether a courtyard or just a yard, it has always been the intent that these outdoor spaces within the private lots retain some of the “native scrub” to contribute to the extensive tree canopy and coastal landscape so characteristic of the community. Few homes have anything resembling a suburban front yard, as most lot types have a zero or very small front setback, with some even allowing balconies to

project over the common area to create that urban density and pattern so important to the success of our masterplan.

It might help explain the high priority put on this sort of thing here in Rosemary Beach if we offer a short definition of what the term “urban” means to us.

When architects and planners distinguish urban patterns and forms from suburban patterns and forms, their focus is as much on the spaces between buildings as on the buildings themselves. When the spaces between buildings are given more importance and not left as afterthoughts and when distances between the fronts of buildings are reduced, neighborhoods will tend to become more pleasant and interesting places in which to walk or bike.

On the other hand, when buildings are just plopped in the middle of lots of random sizes, and insufficient thought is given to the shapes, sizes and functions of the spaces between buildings, then most people will shun walking or biking

as a mode of transportation, and instead prefer to drive.

This significantly decreases our sense of attachment to our environment and to our neighbors. This sets up a cycle of greater and greater concessions to accommodate automobiles, altering the character of a community as more and more function, space and budget is dedicated to driving and parking cars.

The unfortunate result is that the things like outdoor dining or sitting on a park bench that are most important to us when we spend time with our families and friends, become less enjoyable. On the other hand, towns that remain committed to creating and maintaining urban patterns are not only more pleasant places to walk and bike in, but they are so much more pleasant that they tend to be rewarded with visitors, which in turn supports a vibrant and exciting local economy. And guess what? Creating a walkable environment to attract enough visitors to support our Town Center was part of the plan for Rosemary Beach from the start.

The Rosemary Beach Property Owners Association (POA) strives not only to operate and maintain the community’s common areas in world-class condition, but also to keep our owners and their guests and tenants informed of events, programs and projects that impact the town. As a quarterly publication, we try to focus the Rosemary Thymes’ content on topics of longer-term interest to our owners, merchants and visitors. As a compliment to that perspective, we also send monthly newsletters to the property owners that include updates on shorterterm issues and topics.

The community’s websites rosemarybeachfl.org, which is maintained by the Rosemary Beach Property Owners Association (POA), and rosemarybeach.com, which is maintained by the Cottage Rental Company (CRC), are updated regularly with notices of interest to owners and visitors. The calendars on both websites are updated continuously and are available to all users. Take a moment to check out these online resources when you have a chance.

Rosemary Beach Foundation Rosemary Beach Foundation is now in its 15th year of helping the community.

Throughout the year, the Foundation offers charitable events, educational programs and much-needed support to local organizations and schools.

Girls Getaway

In February, women were invited to the annual Girls Getaway. The 4-day celebration included a beach bonfire, design talk with Paige Schnell of Tracery Interiors, jewelry-making class with Melissa Rovner of Blessings in Disguise, succulent terrarium workshop with Clay 30A, Rosemary Beach Realty Tour of Homes and much more!

From Girls Getaway proceeds, Rosemary Beach Foundation donated $12,000 to the new Pediatric Emergency room at Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital (ASH). Each year, the ASH campus in Miramar Beach cares for over 4,900 children in their emergency room. “Sick and injured children, ages 1 to 18, will be able to have specialized medical care close to home.” explained Janet Piepul, ASH Planned Giving Director.

Music in Pictures

In March and April, the 10th Annual Music in Pictures juried exhibition featured 356 paintings created by students (Kindergarten–12th grade) from 18 Walton County schools.

The artwork was inspired by classical music by three European composers: Franz Liszt, Claude Debussy and Gabriel Faure.

The Ancient Horticulturist: Country Cousins

by Susan Broussard As I sit quietly sipping my morning coffee waiting for an untimely yet increasingly common (more so than I would like to admit) monsoon to pass, I contemplate what is next for my garden. On the list of things to do is find replacement plants for the mess made by last winter’s freak ice storm— another weather pattern that I hope does not become common in my area. I have given the affected plants plenty of time to recover. If, by now, I do not have green shoots sprouting from the dead limbs, it is time to replace them. Cold hearted but necessary.

My hunt begins at the local arboretum’s plant sale. It is an excellent place to find plants native to my area, some of which are not usually found at the nearby nurseries. I am specifically looking for native plants to fill the void left in my garden from the harsh winter.

For the uninitiated, native plants occur naturally, having not been introduced by man. They have evolved in a specific area over the course of hundreds to thousands of years, giving them an edge over the introduced plants.

Advantages of native plants include resilience to adverse conditions, along with providing food for bees, butterflies, local and migratory birds and other indigenous animals. Once established, they require less water and fertilizers to thrive.

Check out your local nurseries, arboretums and botanic gardens to source these plants. When

in the area near Rosemary Beach, visit 7 Pines Native Plant Nursery in Defuniak Springs.

On my shopping trip, I hunt not just to replace lost plants but perhaps find an unexpected gem to include in my garden. I am not disappointed. I bring home my very own huckleberry.

What is a huckleberry, you ask?

Huckleberries are from the same genus, Vaccinium, as blueberries— similar but different. Think of it as if your name is Blueberry and you have a cousin named Huckleberry. You are from a fine upstanding family line with members carrying variety names like Tifblue, Brightwell and Premier. Huckleberry, on the other hand, claims a cousin named Farkleberry. Then, in walks the other cousins: Sparkleberry, Mayberry and Deerberry. You lead a productive life. He lives in the woods by the ‘crick’ (translates to creek).

He and the cousins look similar

to you although some are taller, much taller. He is the cousin that can eat or drink almost anything but does not get a stomach ache.

This cousin can plop himself down almost anywhere and feel at home.

The pedigreed blueberries named above join other varieties filling grocery stores from spring into summer with delicious fruit. Huckleberries, along with farkleberries, Vaccinium arboreum, and the other cousins also produce fruit, which fall into the category of small to tiny and dry to sweet. The birds love them.

Some huckleberries in the family are the tall cousins pushed to the back of the family photo, reaching up to 12 feet and taller.

A sunny location can somewhat compact the shrub without relying on pruning shears, but be aware that genetics and Mother Nature have the upper hand. The plus is that they are slow growers.

Huckleberries offer a multitude of landscape value. The small white to pale-pinkish-white flowers hang bell-like in clusters toward the tips of each woody branch. The flowers transform into shiny dark fruit that is usually less than one-half inch in diameter. The greenery, as you can see in the photo, has a pink to reddish tint on the tips.

The foliage turns an attractive red as the weather cools and holds on through most of the winter.

Not all huckleberries fall into the 12 feet tall category. Some

may just grow over a foot tall, but many are six feet on average.

My suggestion is to do a little research if the grower does not provide that specific information.

ARTFULLY UNITING EXTRAORDINARY HOMES WITH EXTRAORDINARY LIVES.

The huckleberry soon to grace my garden is also known as Elliott’s blueberry, Vaccinium elliottii.

This huckleberry cousin is found naturally along sandy creek beds in the eastern portion of the United States. Huckleberries prefer acidic soils but are forgiving if the acid needle moves toward neutral. Luckily my soil has the pH of lemonade. They are forgiving of many different growing conditions in the wild and often are found along creek beds but not in the creek. Hence, they prefer a well-drained but moist spot in your yard. If their roots are kept out of soggy soil, these country cousins will do their best to accommodate.

Mine will find a home in a composted area of a well-drained garden bed sheltered from the hot afternoon sun. Sounds like the cushy life to me. In return, I can look forward to delicate spring flowers, summer berries enjoyed by cardinals, titmice and other birds (and perhaps me, if the berries are sweet enough) and beautiful red leaves in the fall. We are both happy with that arrangement.

Now to find that special cousin, Farkleberry, to add to my collection. It makes me smile every time I say that name.

by Anne Hunter It’s set to be an exciting season in Rosemary Beach. New retail, dining and cocktail options are opening up all over town. Take a stroll through the town center this summer and see what’s new in Rosemary.

Faherty is a beach and lifestyle clothing store located at 16 South Barrett Square. Jackie Golding, Faherty’s Community Manager, explains that the Faherty story starts with two twin brothers, Alex and Mike Faherty who joined forces with their mom, Ninie, and Alex’s wife, Kerry, to create a sustainably made clothing brand of feel-good favorites that bring people joy to wear. Jackie shared more about the Faherty brand: “It was really a combination of it all--the people, the local businesses, the landscape design and architecture that drew us to Rosemary. It is a beautiful community and we’re incredibly fortunate that our store is in the heart of it all and just steps from the beach,” Golding said.

Founding brothers, Alex and Mike Faherty, are from a small beach town in New Jersey that is similar to Rosemary Beach in many ways. They drew multiple connections between the two areas and fell in love with the community and family aspect of the town.

“It’s always been a place we vacationed as a family growing up. Not to mention, there are dogs everywhere, making it the perfect store for locals and vacationers.” The inspiration for Huck and Harlowe came from the family’s travels to London where they frequented dog shops. “It was different from anything we had seen in the United States,” Banks said. They decided to introduce their own pet store when they returned home.

The Huck and Harlowe family has been visiting Scenic Highway 30A for as long as they can remember. The idea to open a store in Rosemary Beach came to them last summer after they realized that it was not only one of their favorite places, but also super dog friendly.

The family knew that they wanted two names for the store, so they brainstormed during quarantine and struck on the name. “Huck and Harlowe sounded best together,” Banks said.

Huck & Harlowe is truly a family affair.

Parents Taylor and Cammie own the store, while son Mason manages operations and daughter Anne manages social media and marketing. Humphrey, the family dog, is the store greeter who has become a fourlegged celebrity among the locals.

Their partner for the Rosemary Beach store is Will Levy who has been connected to the Rosemary Beach community for the last 40-years. After coming to visit Will for a trip, Alex fell in love with Rosemary Beach and the two decided to partner in opening up the Rosemary Beach Faherty store.

KILWINS Kilwins is a candy and ice cream store that will be located at 8 Georgetown Avenue. The store is owned and operated by Paul and Kirsten Nycamp who have been residents of the Santa Rosa Beach area since 2007, after moving here from Michigan to open their Grand Boulevard store.

“Rosemary Beach has always been one of our favorite spots along 30A, and we are so excited to snag a spot in such a premier location.

We can’t wait to open and be a part of the community,” Kirsen said.

The Nykamp’s children are currently homeschooled, which allows them plenty of time to help out at the store.

“Our daughter is a master caramel chew maker and our son is the self-proclaimed best window washer,” Kirsten added.

PLAYA BOWLS Brothers Beau and Jordan VanGeffen teamed up to introduce Playa Bowls to 58 Main Street in Rosemary Beach. “We grew up frequenting 30A and Rosemary Beach and have always had a special connection with the area and to the beach in general. For years we talked about moving to the area and opening a business, and Playa Bowls is the perfect fit,” Jordan said.

TIDWELL AND SON Offering a curated collection of coastal resort clothes for men and boys, Tidwell and Son carries popular brands like Johnnie O, Peter Millar and Brax Fashion.

Robert and Lindsey Tidwell both began visiting Okaloosa County as youngsters, in the early 1980s. The couple moved to Walton county in 2010 during their first year of marriage. “The year 2010 also

saw us become first time parents and the new owners of Barefoot Princess and Island Clothiers at Watercolor. It was a beautiful crazy year.” Lindsey said.

After growing the business and their family for ten years, the Tidwell’s felt that it was time for a new retail space. “In late 2019, we started looking for a new home and were blessed to find beautiful new buildings under construction in Rosemary and Alys Beach,” Lindsey said. Choosing two new locations meant that the Tidwells would have to separate their retail concepts. “The men’s

and boy’s clothing store became Tidwell & Son and opened in our gorgeous new space in Rosemary Beach and The Barefoot Princess, which carries women’s and girl’s lines, will open in a fabulous new space in Alys Beach later this summer,” Lindsey explained.

Trey Dorsey, Property Manager for Rosemary Beach shares the latest on infrastructure and park improvements for the town: We anticipate our owners and guests will notice the impressive amount of “enhancements” around the Common Areas that the Rosemary Beach Property Owners Association has been working on over the last six months. We have been working hard as a community to enhance the overall experience in Rosemary Beach.

Unfortunately, some of these upgrades can cause disturbances in locations around town. Such distubances can include road closures and detours when we install drainage upgrades and replace the aging concrete roadways with pervious pavers, pool closures so we can apply a new plaster coating to the pool itself or stucco finishes around pool walls and limited park access when we replace turf in some of our green areas to keep them healthy and vibrant.

It is sometimes difficult to complete these projects with limited disruption, but the projects are necessary to protect the value of our community. We do not try to schedule any major capital improvements during our peak season months. With the support of our Board of Directors, Town Manager and our

community, we hope to continue these upgrades to Rosemary Beach.

When asked what he loves most about being the Property Manager for Rosemary Beach, Dorsey said, “In a 24/7 town, it can sometimes be exhausting work, but working with our owners, guests, co-workers, community leaders and contractors is rewarding.

Working together to make a town like Rosemary Beach an even more special place is very exciting.”

Evidence of early courtyards dating back to 6,000 B.C. have been found in the Jordan Valley. Practically, they provided natural light and allowed for better airflow.

They were often used as outdoor kitchens and sleeping areas as well. For the modern homeowner, the courtyard is a private slice of paradise—a personal place they can make their own while

enjoying the tranquility of nature either alone or with friends and family.

It’s no surprise that courtyards of Rosemary Beach serve as stunning examples of landscape and architectural design.

Whether imagined as a natural space or as a luxury escape, the courtyards of Rosemary offer a stunning retreat from everyday life. With the sky as the ceiling, these five local courtyards are sure to bring out the nature lover in everyone.

Green Turtle Lane Stone pathways, pine straw and cedar mulch lay the groundwork for this wonderfully natural courtyard.

Planted with Japanese yew, holly, beautyberry, sago palms and split leaf philodendrons, the semiprivate courtyard serves as a serene place to enjoy the birds nesting in the giant oak. Teak furniture keeps the focus on the natural surroundings, while the blue ceramic water feature creates a relaxing sound bath for meditation or reading. The home itself has a true West Indies feel with a wide porch, floor to ceiling windows and a balcony. The porch columns feature unique curved bricks to create their rounded shape.

Tuckers Street With a breathtaking pool, spectacular architectural details and a shady veranda, this courtyard is both upscale and laid back. The covered veranda offers plenty of cozy seating for family gatherings, game nights or afternoon naps. The large, geometric pool features a shallow-ledge lounge area for soaking up the sun while keeping cool. Palms trees add a tropical feel to the space, while trellised ivy decorates the privacy wall.

The arched entrance is a favorite photo spot for passersby and the water feature creates a soothing background for relaxation.

South Briland Lane With a nod to the Caribbean and New Orleans’ architectural style, this stunning courtyard perfectly melds the modern and the historic. A wide wraparound balcony sits above the courtyard, providing light, airflow and seating to the rooms above. Architect Bobby McAlpine designed the courtyard to maximize airflow and light. The completely private courtyard boasts limestone pavers, café lighting, teak furniture and an outdoor shower. A copper rain chain adds a pop of color and interest.

Rosemary Avenue This relaxed courtyard was designed more than 20 years ago and it still retains its original layout, landscaping and charm. The permeable pavers add an eco-friendly touch, while the Pottager’s fountain brings a sense of tranquility and peace that even the birds love. Landscaping includes a large magnolia tree, a line of crepe myrtles and a variety fence line shrubbery. The porch swing and wicker rockers add to the southern charm while Adirondack chairs establish a beachy vibe.

The current owners enjoy using the courtyard as a gathering space, a relaxing spot for enjoying music and cocktails and a safe space for their grandchildren to play. A small plaque by the fountain reads, “I heard your voice in the garden.”

Rosemary Avenue Architect Tom Christ designed this space to follow Rosemary Avenue as it angles toward Town Center, which enabled the creation of an expansive courtyard. Pomegranate trees in green ceramic pots anchor the patio and their bright, red berries attract flocks of Cedar Waxwings each year. Landscaping includes variegated hydrangeas, camellias and a variety of shrubs. Brick pavers create a tidy pathway, while travertine tiles give the patio a Mediterranean feel.

Edie (3) and Huckleberry (5) are being promoted to big brother this July! They’re expecting a baby brother.

Edie is so excited to be a big sister and hold him, while Huck can’t wait to share his alligators with him. Huck also started playing baseball this year and is loving it.

Avery (5) was recently promoted to big sister. She said that being a big sister is the most important job in the world. Her baby sister is named Bailey.

She is very cute and Avery loves to hold her after her mommy feeds her.

Kendall + her new puppy, Daisy Mae

Kendall got a new puppy! Her name is Daisy Mae and she is a 12-week-old maltipoo.

She likes to play with her

bumble bee toy, but she isn’t so great at fetch yet because she’s still learning. She loves to cuddle and Kendall’s had her a total of six days.

The MacKinney girls, Mallory (11), Matilda (10), and Penelope (8) went skiing in Colorado for their Spring Break. They met up with their grandparents from Missouri and enjoyed hitting the slopes and the hot chocolate that followed. Every year that they go they continue to get better and better!

Elias (8) is playing soccer this year. He loves it. Oliver (6), his little brother, is also playing soccer this year. It’s his first time playing a sport.

It was very competitive and they were so proud!

Kirie (8) got the lead in her first production. She had to sing for her audition and she was so excited to get the lead part! She will be playing Elsa from Frozen.

During Spring Break, the Schnaeder kids, Carter (12), Coen (10) and Charlie (6) went to the Dismal Canyons in Alabama and saw the rare glow worms.

Penny (or Penelope) is 2.5 and gave up her babas and binkies. In exchange for becoming such a big girl, she got to choose a toy at Gigi’s as a reward. She chose a really cute baby.

Gabriel (13) lost another tooth. He thought he was done but after visiting the orthodontist realized that he had a few more to lose.

Pierce and Beck (13) played their first soccer games of the season. They had two games and won one but lost the other. Both were super excited to play again.

Registration Opens May 28 for the 10th Annual 30A 10K Thanksgiving Day Races The 30A 10K Thanksgiving Day Races is thrilled to announce our 10th annual event on Nov. 25, 2021, in beautiful Rosemary Beach, Florida. Registration will open on our website, 30A10K.com, on May 28 of Memorial Day weekend. Please register early as we expect a sellout crowd this year!

Recognized as one of the top 10 Thanksgiving Day races in America, the 30A 10K Thanksgiving Day Races event is a fantastic way to get the whole family moving and enjoy the spirit of Thanksgiving. We offer a distance for everyone with a 10K, 5K and 1-mile run, so the whole family can so come out and enjoy all the festivities.

The 30A 10K Thanksgiving Day Race Series is a 501c3 event. Our mission is to raise money for local charities in Bay,

Walton and Okaloosa counties. To date, the series has raised more than $450,000 for local families and children in need.

Please note that the 30A 10K will be implementing an in-person event this fall and will be following whichever protocols are required by the CDC at the time of our event for outdoor events of our size to ensure the safety and health of all participants and volunteers. PROTECTING OUR NESTING SEA TURTLES Sea turtle nesting season runs from May 1 through October.

Please help these beautiful creatures survive by following the clean, dark and flat rules.

CLEAN: Remove all of your belongings, including trash, when you leave the beach.

DARK: Artificial lights distrub nesting sea turtles and hatchlings.

Turn off all lights on or near the beach and close to all curtains in beach facing windows.

FLAT: Please knock down sandcastles and fill holes when you leave the beach.

MORE DO’S AND DON'TS FOR SEA TURTLE NESTING SEASON DO NOT shine any light on the sea turtle and/or its face. The light may cause the female to abort the nesting process, or other sea turtles nearby may be discouraged from nesting if there are lights on the beach. If you are using your turtle safe filter over the lens of your flashlight, you should still refrain from shinning the light directly at the face of an adult or a hatchling.

DO watch from a distance. Stay clear and out of sight of the turtle. Stay behind the turtle and remain as still and quiet as possible until she begins laying eggs; otherwise you may scare her back into the sea.

DO NOT take pictures using a flash, including camera phones. This high-intensity light can be even more disturbing than flashlights.

DO NOT touch or handle the sea turtle. In addition to being illegal, you may injure the turtle or cause her to leave without completing the nesting process.

DO NOT stand in the turtle's path to the ocean.

DO NOT handle sea turtle eggs or put anything into the nest. You can introduce bacteria or injure the eggs.

DO watch from a distance and remain quiet and still if you encounter hatchlings emerging from the nest. Keep all lights off.

DO leave the hatchlings in their nest and allow them to emerge and crawl to the water on their own. Scientists believe this crawl to the water is important and imprints the location of that particular beach on the hatchlings brain.

Adult female turtles will return to the same beach they hatched from to lay their eggs.

DO NOT disturb tracks left by adult or hatchling turtles.

Researchers use the tracks to identify the species of turtles that nested, as well as to find and mark the nests.
