From the POA
Welcome to Rosemary Beach! Welcome to Rosemary Beach! Spring is in the air and we are all looking forward to the future. A perfect occasion to acknowledge the foundations upon which our future is being built, and to also renew our commitment to maintaining the both the town’s vision and its physical spaces and infrastructure.
Our Vision and Our Plan As Rosemary Beach and the surrounding communities continue to be discovered by new generations and families, the ongoing development both in and around our town will place significant pressures on us as we strive to maintain our town’s character and its common spaces, such as our parks, our streets, and our sidewalks. Less visible but no less important, there is also infrastructure such as telecommunications networks and other utilities, as well as programs such as garbage collection and parking management that all need to evolve to meet these new levels of service. The Board of Directors and staff of the Rosemary Beach Property Owners Association (POA) continue to take a proactive role to ensure we are ready for these changes. Our Vision statement has remained unchanged: “The town of Rosemary Beach aspires to be the best family beach community in the United States, driven by quality and excellence in everything it does. By preserving its architectural heritage, natural beauty and vibrant community spirit, Rosemary Beach will be a place that blends a tranquil residential area and active Town Center where residents, guests, and merchants live, work and play in harmony.” That vision is rooted in town planners Duany Plater-Zyberk’s (DPZ’s)
design for the community. DPZ’s design includes many traditional features that combine to create a sense of place that is unique to Rosemary Beach, assembled in a then-new way to accommodate the ways we live, work, and play today. Thinking about all that has changed since the first few buildings sprang up here more than twenty years ago, among the low scrub and well before the surrounding properties were developed as intensely as they are today, it is refreshing to know that we embraced so many traditional concepts that are now being more widely-adopted again. From generous porches and balconies facing the streets, neighborhood parks and pedestrian footpaths, and a return to locally-owned and operated restaurants and shops, our community’s pioneers sought solutions to community-building that would imbue Rosemary Beach with a timeless and family-friendly character that is today the hallmark of our town. Many of the subtler design features such as the pervious street paving (in lieu of oversized, fenced retention ponds) and dark-sky lighting were also forward-thinking, and yet somehow manage to feel traditional at the same time.
It is clear that much of the success of Rosemary Beach is attributable to the thoughtful Master Plan authored by DPZ, one of the world’s preeminent New Urbanist town planning firms. Through the 20+ years of our history, this plan has continued to serve us well, guiding the many people in our community who have taken on the mantle of responsibility for ensuring that the vision continues amid the growth and maturity of our town.
How to Maintain a Busy Town The degree of our success and the reliance of the communities around us on our town center requires that we continually refurbish and enhance our town. The POA staff are supported by a hardworking, knowledgeable, and creative group of volunteer owners in the form of our Board of Directors and several committees. The committee commissioned by the POA board to advise it on ongoing and special projects to ensure that public town elements such as lighting, signage, parks, landscape, amenities, and activities remain true to our vision is the Townscape Enhancement Committee (TEC). Just a few of the many other committees actively working to maintain and enhance the town are the Covenants Enforcement Committee, the Design and Development Advisory Committee, and the Welcome Committee. Property owners can find more detailed information about these committees, particularly
the TEC and the planning documents it has created, on the POA’s website. With the input and direction of the Board and committees, the professional staff and local contractors are then able to bring the resources of the community to bear in a strategic but flexible series of projects each year. Some of these projects are larger, multi-phased efforts such as paving and drainage improvements or the current telecommunications upgrades, while others may be quite small, such as the current project to refurbish the town center way-finding “finger” signage. All our common area projects must be scheduled around events and busier periods, as well as other projects that may be underway at the private lots. Sometimes it can feel as if we are working on a car while it is being driven down the road! Please be patient as while there is no convenient time that pleases everybody to complete these projects, they must be done to maintain the success that generations of owners and merchants have worked so hard to establish. Our goal is to complete every project to the high standards of our town, as quickly as possible and with minimal disruption to our owners and guests.
Upcoming Events All that work to create and maintain wonderful public spaces brings us to mentioning the upcoming events that will happen in those spaces
in the next few months… we are excited about the great programs that both the town Merchants Association and the POA have in store for you this season. Please check out the calendar in this issue for a detailed list and description of upcoming events, such as the Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday, and the 30A Farmers’ Market held every Sunday from 9am to 1pm, which features many locally-grown and sourced items.
Town Communications As a quarterly publication, we try to focus the Rosemary Thymes’ content on topics of longerterm interest to our owners, merchants and visitors. As a compliment to that perspective, we also send monthly newsletters to the property owners that include updates on shorter-term issues and topics. The community’s websites rosemarybeachfl.org, which is maintained by the Rosemary Beach Property Owners Association (POA), and rosemarybeach.com, which is maintained by the Cottage Rental Company (CRC), are updated regularly with notices of interest to owners and visitors. The calendars on both websites are updated continuously and are available to all users. Take a moment to check out these online resources when you have a chance. Please drop us a line at POA@rosemarybeachfl. org and share your thoughts with the staff and the Board. We appreciate your feedback!

Respect posted areas Avoid posted nesting and resting areas and use designated walkways.
These protected birds are among those that nest of Florida's beaches
Never intentionally force birds to fly When birds are chased or disturbed, they use energy they need to reserve for nesting and migration.
Keep pets away from nesting areas Even well-behaved pets can be perceived as a threat to birds and will disturb them. If you take pets to the beach, keep them leashed and away from nesting areas.
Share the Beach with Beach-Nesting Birds Courtesy of Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
Disturbance threatens survival Many Florida shorebirds and seabirds nest on the open beach, where they lay eggs in shallow scrapes in the sand or sea shells. The nests are so well camouflaged that they can be accidentally trampled by unsuspecting beachgoers. When beach-nesting birds are forced to fly or run from their nests, their eggs and chicks are left vulnerable to the elements and to predators. Disturbances that cause birds to take flight or leave their young may threaten their survival.
Each nest is critical Populations of beach-nesting birds are declining due to significant modification and disturbance of beaches due to human activities. The fate of each delicate nest is truly critical to the survival of these birds. By being a responsible beach-user, you can help beach-nesting birds and their young survive. You can help! While enjoying the beach, take these simple steps:
Keep yourdistance If birds become agitated or leave their nests, you are too close! A general rule is to stay at least 300 feet from a nest.
Black Skimmer
Keep the beach clean and do not feed wildlife Food scraps attract predators such as raccoons and crows to the beaches. Litter on beaches can entangle birds, sea turtles, and other wildlife.
Spread the word! If you see people disturbing nesting birds, gently remind them how their actions may hurt birds’ survival. If they continue to disturb nesting birds, please call and report their activities to FWC’s Wildlife Alert hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).
Least Tern
Avoid getting too close to beach-nesting birds Beach-nesting birds view people and pets as a threat to their nests and young, and will react defensively when you get too close. You will know you are too close if adult birds react to your approach by standing up, running or flying from their nest.
American Oystercatcher
If you remain too close to beach-nesting birds, they may try driving you away by calling out loudly and dive-bombing you. Some species may pretend to have a broken wing to lure your attention away from a nest. When adult birds are actively defending in these ways, they can’t protect eggs and chicks from the hot sun. Those defensive actions may also attract the attention of predators such as herons or crows. If beach-nesting birds alert you that you are too close, immediately leave the area! As you leave, please keep a close eye on the ground for eggs or chicks that may be hidden in your path.

Sculpture exhibition opens Memorial Day weekend By Marsha Aldridge King
Memorial Day weekend is just around the corner and with it, the opening of the second biennial Rosemary Beach Sculpture Exhibition (RBSE), the signature event of Rosemary Beach. The exhibition is included in the Cultural Arts Alliances’ (CAA) Arts Month in May and will run through Feb. 14, 2020. Sculptures
Sixteen sculptures from 77 entries are currently under consideration for the exhibition. “We are thrilled with the response,” said RBSE Project Director, Thomas Kramer. The entries came from 53 artists across 20 states, Washington D.C. and Paris, France. “Numbers are impressive, but equally so are the quality of the sculptures as well as the resumes of the sculptors,” noted Kramer. Materials for the contemporary sculptures are as varied as their subject matter. Made of steel, aluminum, bronze, stainless steel and wire, some address issues such as the environment and freedom, while others explore formal elements like perspective and balance. An audio tour narrated by the artists themselves through the free ‘Otocast’ smartphone app will enable visitors to hear the artists as they visit the sculptures, making for a rich viewing experience. A free catalogue of the exhibition with a map will also be available.
Events
Among the events being planned are an exclusive Patrons Party, an Opening Event, an Artist Panel Discussion, Educational Activities for School Students, Homeowners Only Event and more. One of the events leading up to the exhibition will be an Earth Day Celebration in conjunction with Ohana School. Students there, working under the guidance of their art and science teachers, are creating a science-based sculpture that will teach stewardship of our oceans and earth. To be made of debris from our gulf waters, beach and surrounding areas, the sculpture will raise awareness of the evergrowing pollution of single use plastics and its threat to oceans, marine life and humans alike. The sculpture will be unveiled on April 22 (Earth Day) in Rosemary Beach. “We are happy for the opportunity to come together with Rosemary Beach to serve our community,” says Ohana Founder, Lettye
Burgtorf. “Our students and teachers are already at work on the design of the sculpture that will illustrate the gravity of plastic pollution, and offer ways families can make changes in their personal consumption habits to address the problem. We are excited to share the research, knowledge and talents of our students and teachers in this way.”

How to get Swimsuit Ready Tips from Willow Founders Celia Tucker & Cindy Krutz on Getting Beach Ready for Any Body By Anne Hunter The summer season is just around the corner and chances are you’ll spend spring getting your summer body in gear. Fashionistas Celia Tucker and Cindy Krutz, founders of Willow in Rosemary Beach, share their tips on staying body positive while getting swimsuit ready for any shape and size. Their swimsuit summer ensembles include breezy dresses, wide-brimmed hats, statement sunglasses, healthy eating and plenty of sun protection. Their tips for new trends will make you feel aglow before making your debut this season. How do you stay body positive? Celia: I like to do a mix of yoga and Pilates throughout the year. My friends and I have a monthly add-on workout challenge that we text to each other. It keeps us all accountable. It changes up every month, so we are sure to add on lots of planks and sit-ups for January and February. I always participate in Dr. Bart’s 21-day cleanse in January. It makes me feel so much better—mentally and physically. I also try to eat pretty clean year-round. Cindy: I love yoga and I play tennis for a lot of my cardio. I have a Labrador that I have to continually walk, so she helps me out also! What are your must-have swimsuits and beach accessories for spring and summer? The High-Rise Bikini Celia: The high-rise bikini is in! This style is flattering for so many
bodies. Jonathan Simkhai has some really beautiful sets. We shop locally at Ophelia for a perfect on-trend suit. I prefer a little more coverage since I am running after my son... and I may be over 40! I love a good one-piece as long as it doesn't come with an attached skirt. They serve a great purpose, but are not there just yet. Seafolly makes cute suits with coverage. Sunglasses Celia: Sunnies are always a beach and poolside must. A cool trend we have seen with sunglasses is really cute and good quality shades at much lower prices. With the introduction of brands such as Quay that retail for under $80, you can really afford to jump on monthly sunglass trends. A favorite brand of mine is Maho—it was created by a husband and wife who traveled the world. They wanted to bring a good quality product for a sharp price. So all of their fun shades are polarized and retail around about $95 to 130. Sliders and Sundresses Celia: It's nice to have things that you can wear to the beach and thrown on to go straight to lunch. A cool hat and a long cover-up are great. Pool slides are really trendy right now. There are some super fab ones from Isabel Marant. A long gauze skirt with a button down tied at the waist is a fun look too. Headbands Cindy: Headbands are making a comeback. My favorite ones are by LeLe Sadoughi. I have her silk leopard headband which I think will look so cute with a suit this spring on the beach.
Trendy Sunglasses by Maho Shades
Beach Bags Cindy: I love having a big beach bag. We sell lots of cute ones at Willow, but I love my son's LL Bean zipper top monogram canvas bag. It fits all his things and mine and is machine washable. Whatever bag you chose, a long strap is a must in my opinion. Hats, Hats, Hats! Celia: I always, always wear a hat. My favorites are Janessa Leonne and Hat Attack.
Cindy: I am always wearing a hat in the summer. It covers my dirty hair and protects my face! My favorite is Rag & Bone. They fit well and aren't too big or too small. How do you stay sun protected? Cindy: I love how swimsuit designers are creating really cute rash guards and long sleeve suits. It's such a cute way to keep yourself protected for the longer days out in the sun. My favorite
sunscreens are all coming out with face sticks, which make it so much easier to re-apply. I think they are getting better and better every year.
Every body is a beach body
Celia: I have had Basil Cell skin spots removed, so sunscreen is huge for me. Have you heard what toxic sunscreens are doing to our coral reefs? Scary stuff!! I love Sport by Juice Beauty and Suntregity products. I always have a big bottle of water and I try to remember to bring a mister for my face with essential oil, but with a six-year old, that rarely happens.
Let’s all subscribe to the body positive idea that every body is a beach body and that the best way to get a perfect swimsuit-ready, beach body is to put a swimsuit on your body and go to the beach. That said, there a few tips and tricks that will help women of all shapes and sizes feel and look spectacular when they hit the beach this season.
What are your favorite beachwear designers and styles for the season?
Hydrate Water, water and more water. Drinking water gives your skin a youthful glow and proper hydration reduces the appearance of wrinkles by filling in and plumping the skin.
Cindy: I love Raquel Allegra's soft cotton dresses. They are thin and light, but their prints have so much color that they are not see through. The same prints come in tee-shirts that are cute to pair with denim cut-off shorts. I also love Frank & Eileen long button down shirt dresses. They are a great length to wear as a cover-up. All of the Frank & Eileen shirts are great beach wear. The regular length button downs are so cute tied in a knot with shorts. Celia: Gauze, gauze, gauze. I am obsessed with gauze and I have been for years. If I ever designed a clothing line, it would have to be for beach bound ladies, because it would consist of all gauze in tons of amazing colors. I love a gauze button down shirt and cut-offs. One of our designers, Love Tanjane, does amazing tye-die on gauze. I kinda live in it. Celia and Cindy’s number one tip is to stay beach-inspired. Being yourself and proud of your body goes a long way. It's all about being comfortable in your own skin and loving the image of not just any body, your body. Your own selfworth is your best beach accessory.

Exfoliate Exfoliation is key for a skin baring day at the beach. A good scrub can help slough off dead skin cells, brighten complexions and unclog pores. Cover Up There are many ways to protect your beautiful skin from the beauty blasting rays of the sun – sunscreen, hats, cover-ups or sun blocking swimsuits all help keep your skin looking young and fresh. Protect your eyes Polarized sunglasses that block 100% of both UVA and UVB rays are the only way to go. A long day in the sun without eye protection can lead to eye damage and those dreaded laugh (squint) lines around the eyes. Have fun Let your gorgeous self shine and enjoy your day at the beach without worrying too much about your appearance—after all, happiness really is the best beauty product. This is your time to relax, play with family and enjoy the beautiful landscapes of Rosemary Beach.

How to Run a 5K by Emily Echevarria • photos courtesy of Seaside School 5K
As sunny, almost-spring days beckon people outside, many take the opportunity to enjoy the perfect weather and pedestrian-friendly landscapes by lacing up and hitting the pavement for a run. Running or jogging can offer an endurance and cardio workout, a way to explore, a challenge for body or simply some you-time. If you haven’t yet joined the active running community along 30A, signing up for a 5K (3.10 miles) race is a great place to start. Longtime local runner Jon LaPlante agrees with this sentiment. “In my opinion, your first 5K is as much about an introduction to a great weekend sport as it is about your time,” he said. “The one thing you know for sure is, it will be a personal best for you! So relax and enjoy yourself.” After logging many miles, here are some of LaPlante’s best tips for making the best of a first 5K.
Train up
Sure, you can probably slog through 3.1 miles with little-to-no training, but to avoid injury and actually enjoy yourself, you must put in some training miles. “You can start as late as a month out and still get yourself in shape for a 5K,” LaPlante says.
Runners participating in the Seaside School 5k & Half-Marathon
Focus on breathing
“If this is your first race, make sure you stay in your pace category. It is tempting to move up and start in front of others, but this could cause you to run way too fast in the beginning and you will pay for it for the rest of the race."
“My tip is to listen to your favorite upbeat music before you go out to run and simply replay it in your head,” he says. “If you wear headphones while you are running, you run the risk of messing up your breathing if you ever run without them. Try it, run with and without music. When you hear yourself huffing and puffing it messes with your breathing rhythm.”
Take it easy the day before the race
“Drink plenty of water and eat a big breakfast the day before as well. I always like to stretch before I go to bed and make sure you get up early on race day.”
Perfect your 5K morning routine
“Get up a couple hours before the race. If you usually drink coffee, have a cup of coffee and also a very light breakfast. Do not overeat,” LaPlante stressed. “Thirty minutes before the race, do some light jogging around the start area. Warm up and then stretch some more. Drink a little water. Have fun!”
Start relaxed
“Most people burn up a lot of energy before they even start because they are nervous,” he says. “If this is your first race, make sure you stay in your pace category. It is tempting to move up and start in front of others, but this could cause you to run way too fast in the beginning and you will pay for it for the rest of the race.
Celebrate your achievement
“When you finish, pat yourself on the back,” LaPlante says. “You did the work and you finished! And eat whatever you want; you earned it.” The perfect race to show off your newfound running skills is the Seaside School 5K and Half Marathon. “Down here, the Seaside 5k is one of the best locations and events around,” LaPlante says. “Most the time it is a fairly cool day with a slight
ocean breeze, the course is flat and the entire road is open to you. The race is well organized and the mood is always great!” The Seaside School Half Marathon and 5K includes three days of events taking place over March 1 to 3, with the Taste of the Race event with Chef Emeril Lagasse featuring amazing coastal cuisine, plenty of fun for all ages and the races through the colorful neighborhood of Seaside, Fla. Proceeds from the race benefit the Seaside School, a tuition-free, local neighborhood school serving students who not only live along Hwy. 30A, but also across Walton County. In 13 years the school has expanded to serving fifth through twelfth grades and more than 330 students.

How to Decorate your Beach House By Paige Schnell, Tracery Interiors
I cannot name the number of times I have been asked for tips for decorating a beach house over the last 15 years. It is your lucky day! Here are 5 of my best tips I have learned over the last 15 years of designing homes along 30A.
1. Always have a sand room.
A sand room is a place where people can leave wet towels, flip flops, etc. This can be outside on a porch or in a breezeway or it can be an actual space within your beach house. Essential items include a bench or stool to sit and take your shoes off, wall hooks and an indoor/outdoor rug to catch the sand.
2. Light colors evoke the feeling of living by the water.
Bring the outside in by using white, blues, grays, greens, and linens. This will give your home a feel of escape that you don’t have in your primary residence. The most underused color of these is green. Look around and take in the sea oats, the palmettos, and sand live oaks as color inspiration. The other color that I just love is driftwood. This can appear inside in flooring, cabinetry, furniture, and ceilings and walls.
3. The Pantone color of the year this year is Living Coral.
This is the perfect inspiration for a room in your beach house. An all-white rooms with coral lamps and pillows will add so much
fun to a clean palate. While I wouldn’t paint a room this color I do love using it as an accent.
4. Create a beautiful place to dine in your home.
Whether big or small a great dining space is the perfect place to gather at the end of the day. When at the beach, so much of your day is spent enjoying the beautiful surroundings then at the end of the day having a great place to gather creates an amazing way to wind down. If your home is small think about moving your dining experience outside (you are at the beach after all). Lanterns, candles, palmettos, simple white dishes and a beautiful table runner are a must for any beach house.
5. Have fun! It’s a beach house!
If your beach house is not your primary home then you can add a little whimsy. But I don’t mean themes such as anchors, sail boats and too many starfish. With beach décor a little goes a long way. A coral lamp or a framed set of starfish is the perfect addition to a room without being too “beachy

Now to choose your flowering plants. But wait, your selections entail more than just picking pretty colors. You will need to provide host and nectar plants plus plants that provide shelter.
How to Plant a Butterfly Garden by Susan Broussard
A funny thing happened on the way to spring. I decided to build myself a butterfly garden. It will be beautiful. It will be serene. It will be a garden that feeds and nurtures those fabulous floating flowers of the insect world. Actually, it will be a way to fill that muddy mess on the south side of my yard. Recently, I received a serendipitous request to write about butterfly gardening. We had cleared some trees on the south side of our home last summer and, voila, sunshine appeared. Since I couldn’t install a beach resort, I went with the next best thing: a butterfly garden. I’m unselfish like that, you know. Since this article is written a few months in advance, I am actually at the early stages of implementing my newest flower bed so most of this article will be conjecture. So far, I’ve spread a layer of mulch deep enough to smother the grass (mostly weeds) underneath. That’s it. That’s as far as I’ve gotten. The rest is “Do as I say, not as I do.” It’s early days yet. Trust me. It will be the most beautiful display ever produced. Giverny will have nothing on my garden. If you decide to follow the same path, select a site that is sunny and well drained. If you need to raise the level of the area to keep it dry, remove the grass then add and till in enough good quality garden soil to ensure your
Butterflies will need a place to lay their eggs which will also provide food for the larva (caterpillar) to munch upon once they hatch. Let’s call them caterpillar cafes or host plants. Count on these to be eaten and chewed upon. The plants will grow back. I promise. The idea is to provide enough of the host plants to feed a generation of caterpillars. Lots of caterpillars means lots of butterflies. Each species of butterfly prefers, and many times need, specific plants to nurture their caterpillars. In addition, there is a large selection of flowers that provide nectar for the adults aka butterflies. Some plants will also be needed to provide protection as the caterpillar emerges from the chrysalis. These are often different than the host plants. Ferns and grasses can provide a sheltered area as can nearby shrubs and trees. Don’t be too fast at cleaning up the garden; butterflies like a little mess to hide in. The Gulf South offers long stretches of warm weather so if you live further north, your list may need to vary from mine. You may notice that my list on the right contains native and exotic plants. I’m not opposed to adding nonnatives to my garden especially when they have so much to offer. Plus, many of these flowers will also provide for other pollinators and even hummingbirds. So many pluses.
beautiful new garden will not drown. It is also good idea to add and mix in a generous amount of compost (organic matter). Adding compost is a given for any garden bed as it adds nutrients and the ability to retain moisture. Compost can be created in your own backyard consisting You may have noticed that I included a variety of decomposed leaves, lawn clippings, and suggestion for a few plants on the list. They grow kitchen scraps. know that may seem like an obvious statement, but some gardeners do not like to see munched-upon leaves or caterpillars crawling around on their flowers. Butterflies are insects. Albeit beautiful insects, but they are just as susceptible to poisons as their bug-ugly cousins. Even organic insecticides will wreak havoc on the butterfly populations. Take a deep breath and allow Mother Nature to do her thing. Once you remove pesticides from your garden, you will notice a diverse insect population and diversity is the sign of a healthy environment. Water is the last provision I will make for the fluttering guests to my garden. Remember the description of the area as a muddy mess. The mud is

actually a good thing for butterflies. It provides not only moisture, but minerals for our floating flowers. Who knew? That’s my excuse for not stressing over that soggy patch at the edge of the newly formed flower bed. You can make up your own excuse. I am cool with that. I am looking forward to the butterflies floating through my garden. When the trees came down last summer, I was not happy with the loss of shade in my yard. I’m now seeing the advantages and embracing the change. A hard thing for this old girl, but let’s go with it.

It hurt when it was wiggled so he went to visit his dad’s office and Ms. Angela the nurse wiggled it out. For being so brave he got a kitkat as big as his head. Lilah Robertson (7) lost her tooth in the car. When they got home the tooth was lost for like an hour. When she wiggled the tooth backwards it fell out and she screamed.
