From the POA Welcome to Rosemary Beach!

Welcome to Rosemary Beach, our special beach haven during this summer season. We are glad to see vacationing guests each year and are honored that you chose to spend time in our town. Rosemary has never been, and will never be, a simple beach resort. There is no large corporation spending investment dollars to achieve the greatest return. There are no large marketing and advertising firms building hype to lure tourists. There are no large fences and entry gates to access our town. Rosemary is a community of homeowners who love living here and sharing it with our guests.

Our town was founded in 1995 and is located on 107 acres fronting the Gulf of Mexico on the southeast corner of Walton County’s scenic Highway 30A. It is managed through a property owners association comprised of community volunteers and staff.

Our many owners are what make Rosemary so special. We have full time owners, owners who are in town periodically, owners who live and also own businesses in town, and owners who are involved heavily in the association and its operations.

The property owners association is operated by dedicated volunteers. Our elected board of directors, as well as our multiple committee members, work to perpetually improve the town and keep everything intact. This gift of these owners’ dedication and care, both past and present, is what has made Rosemary exceptional from the time of its inception.

We have a staff of over 50 employees. The maintenance department has employees who have all been here more than ten years. Our security department is comprised of former law enforcement officers, as well as civilians who are customer service driven. Our beach service staff will make sure your experience on our half-mile beach is exceptional. Our property management department makes sure the landscaping is pleasing and our properties are all in compliance in architecture and appearance. Finally, our management and administration staff ensure everything runs smoothly throughout town.

This community has a dense history and a passionate past. Every tree that has been planted, every bench that has been placed, and every building that has been designed and constructed has a story. The many people, both past and present, all contributed to Rosemary Beach to become the premier beach community that it is today.

Spend your day in Rosemary walking along our boardwalks in the natural shade, relaxing by one of our pools with a drink or at our beach listening to the sound of the relaxing waves. Enjoy a day shopping for a book, art, clothes and other great finds in Town Center at our unique retail stores and boutiques. Relax at one of our spas then grab lunch and a cocktail at one of our restaurants. Whatever you decide to do during your time here, enjoy being part of our special community.

ROSEMARY BEACH FOUNDATION

Rosemary Beach Foundation brings the community together in the spirit of giving. The Foundation hosts events, performances, tournaments and exhibitions. Through these efforts, more than $1.4 million has been donated to local charitable organizations and schools.

“Ascension Sacred Heart Foundation is grateful and honored to be the beneficiary of the successful Rosemary Beach Girls Getaway event,” Major Gifts/ Planned Giving Director Janet Piepul said. “As the only not-for-profit hospital in the area offering patient-centered care from newborns on, we are thankful for the support of the Rosemary Beach Foundation and our community.”

Music In Pictures

Over 4,000 students from 21 Walton County schools participated in the 13th Annual Music in Pictures, a year-long arts in education initiative and juried art exhibition.

Students (Kindergarten – 12th grade) created an original painting based upon their reactions and interpretations of classical music.

The student artists received medals and were recognized at an awards ceremony on April 25th at Freeport High School.

Cornhole Tournament

Rosemary Beach Foundation’s 10th Annual 30A Cornhole Tournament sponsored by Bombora Sun & Surf is highly anticipated by locals and visitors. Players enjoyed a day of friendly competition while spectators cheered on their favorite team. From a field of 64 teams, the 2024 champions were ACC and Boom Shaka Laka placed second.

Held during Autism Awareness Month, the event benefited South Walton Academy, Special Olympics-Florida and Westonwood Ranch. These organizations advocate for and serve individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the Walton County community.

Accounting and HR Manager, Miriam Berto, oversees all aspects of HR and accounting management at the Rosemary Beach POA. Serving as a member of the team since 2022, Berto firmly believes that when employees are happy, we all succeed.

Tell me about your role at Rosemary Beach?

I am the accounting and HR manager. In this role, I am responsible for collecting payments, ensuring that all bills are paid in a timely manner and all aspects of human resources. I make sure our team is happy, productive and works well together because when employees are happy and healthy, we all succeed! We all work together to ensure Rosemary Beach POA is the best place to live, work and play!

How long have you worked on the Rosemary Beach team? How has the community changed over the years?

I have been a member of the Rosemary Beach team since July 2022.

What is your favorite part of working at Rosemary Beach? Do you have any stories/examples you can share?

My favorite part about working at Rosemary Beach are all of the wonderful people that I get to work with as a part of our team. I can do accounting and HR management anywhere, but the team I get to work with is what makes me want to come to work every day.

I make sure our team is happy, productive and works well together because when employees are happy and healthy, we all succeed!”

What do you like to do in your free time?

My favorite thing to do in my free time is play with my granddaughters, Annabelle and Adalyn. Occasionally, I get to visit with my granddaughters, Hailey and Riley, who live in Washington State.

Avolunteer committee of Rosemary Beach homeowners and merchants, dedicated to continuing the Rosemary Beach Sculpture Exhibition (RBSE) and its focus on enhancing the natural and built beauty of our town, has issued the Call For Artists and is now reviewing applications. Over 20 artists have submitted more than 50 sculptures for judging. Keeping Tropical Plants Healthy

Tropical plants are filling our homes and workspaces, adding beauty, relieving stress and boosting creativity, productivity and focus. Keep these plants healthy and looking their best by providing for their basic needs.

Select plants that will thrive in the growing conditions found in your home or office and with your level of care. Busy gardeners should look for low-maintenance plants like ZZ plants, Chinese evergreens, pothos and philodendrons while others may choose ferns, peace lilies, baby tears and gardenias that require a bit more attention and care.

Light is the most common limiting factor when growing plants indoors. Matching the plants to the desired light is the first step in success. Plant tags, university websites and plant books can provide you with this information. If you are lucky enough to have an east- or west-facing window, you can grow a wide variety of plants. High-light plants should be kept within two feet of windows. Low-light plants can be set up to six feet back or off to the side of an east- or west-facing window, or in front of one that faces north. Keep in mind buildings, awnings, trees and sheers can decrease the amount of sunlight reaching the plants.

Fortunately, there are now more options for decorative energy-efficient grow lights available, expanding your indoor gardening opportunities. Pendants, clip-ons, floor lights and furniture-grade plant shelves provide the needed light for plants and add decorative elements to your home.

Proper watering is next on the list of key factors for the healthy growth and longevity of indoor plants. Most tropical plants prefer evenly moist soil comparable to a wrung-out sponge. Water thoroughly preferable with tepid water when the top few inches of potting mix are starting to dry. Pour off any excess water that collects in the saucer. Allowing plants to sit in water can lead to root rot and plant death.

To achieve proper watering, enlist the help of moisture-retaining products like organic Wild Valley Farms wool pellets. Made from wool waste, this sustainable product reduces watering by up to 25 percent and increases space in the soil for proper drainage and better plant growth.

You can also create attractive clusters of plants, while increasing the humidity that most tropical plants need for healthier growth. As one plant loses moisture through the leaves, often called transpiration, the neighboring plants benefit. Go one step further by utilizing gravel trays. Set plant pots on pebble-filled saucers or trays. Allow excess water to collect in the pebbles below the pots. As this water evaporates, it increases the humidity around the plants. This also reduces your workload by eliminating the need to pour off excess water that collects in the plant saucer.

Add a few terrariums for plants like Venus flytrap, ferns and spike moss that grow best in high humidity and moist soil conditions. Purchase one or create your own from an old aquarium, or other clear glass container and add a lid to create a closed growing system. Select or create one that supports plant growth, complements your home’s décor and reflects your personality.

Provide a warm, draft-free location for your tropical plants. Most prefer the same temperatures, 65 to 75 degrees, that we do.

You may need to move plants, adjust grow lights and fine-tune your watering schedule as you get to know each plant’s needs. Once you place them in the right location and provide the correct amount of light and water, your plants will grow and prosper.

Performing Arts Take Center Stage This Summer

30A and the Emerald Coast region are known for their beautiful beaches and vibrant communities, so it’s no surprise that the performing arts would take center stage during the summer.

The arts have a unique way of bringing people together and creating memorable experiences. It’s not just about the performances themselves, though. The performing arts scene across the region provides an opportunity for local artists to showcase their talent and for audiences to support the arts in their community. Plus, with the beautiful backdrop of the region, it’s bound to be an unforgettable summer filled with culture, creativity and connection.

HarborWalk Theater

Located in HarborWalk Village in Destin, the HarborWalk Theater is a 90-seat live performance venue owned and operated by award-winning illusionists Noah and Heather Wells. The venue is home to two award winning shows, MAXIMUM MAGIC with Noah & Heather and The Stoked Comedy Hypnosis Show. In addition to these shows, HarborWalk Theater also hosts a variety of comedians throughout the year.

“We [Noah & Heather] do work with other organizations in Destin and throughout the surrounding communities to bring magic and comedy to our locals,” Noah Wells said. “Now in its 19th season, MAXIMUM MAGIC is the longest running magic show on the Gulf Coast, and it’s entirely family friendly.”

The 90-minute show offers world-class illusions, comedy and audience participation.

“We hope everyone in the area will take time to come see one of Noah & Heather’s MAXIMUM MAGIC shows this summer! It’s a great way to escape reality for a couple hours, and it’s the perfect experience to share with your family and friends,” Wells said. “We have been blessed to call the Gulf Coast ‘home’ for nearly 20 years now, and we have always appreciated the support of this community and the visitors who vacation here as well.”

Stage Crafters

Stage Crafters has been active in Fort Walton Beach since 1972, making it the oldest continuously running, all volunteer, not-for-profit community theatre in the state of Florida. This legacy and dedication to community is what has inspired this summer’s line-up of plays and musicals.

Stage Crafters President, David Chancellor, first became involved with the organization in 1984. After moving back to the area, he became involved again and has been in a show every season since 2008. Wanting to ensure that Stage Crafters is around for another 52 years, Chancellor said that he wanted to honor the legacy of the theatre and the people that came before him with this season’s line-up.

“This year, I picked the word community. Not only are we a community theater, but we depend on the community. As an all-volunteer organization, everyone who participates is from the community. Around 10 to 12 new people have gotten involved this year, and that is the future of the organization,” Chancellor said. “I am 60 now and I want to know that the organization is in good hands and continuing. I want people to experience the love and friendship I have found here.”

Stage Crafters will be performing Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap in June directed by Gail Hurley, The Naked Truth directed by Pamela J. Strecker and Nancy Kruzek throughout August and A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder directed by Douglas Henderson in November.

Chancellor said that he hopes that when people attend a Stage Crafters production, they are reminded of the power of live theatre.

“I pay attention to the community theatre world as a whole and we are approaching some headwinds. There is so much competition in live theatre, and it is important to remind people of the power of live theatre,” Chancellor said. “We are storytellers and there is something so powerful seeing a story acted out by real people in front of you. We [Stage Crafters] make it fun, and we make it easy if you are interested in the theater. When someone sees a show, they get it and then they come back again and again. It is impactful, meaningful, fun and it is so worth it to see, and we have some incredibly talented performers in the area.”

The REP Theatre

The Repertory Theatre (The REP) is based in Seaside and is committed to a long-range vision of building itself into a world-class regional theatre company, and an immediate mission of providing high-quality professional theatre to audiences of all ages. Home to a 70-seat indoor theatre, Managing Director Aubrey Ainsworth said that The REP will once again be heading into communities around 30A this summer for free familyfriendly programming.

“Our family-friendly summer programming kicks off on May 20 and runs through August 7. Local and visiting families can catch free performances of our children’s theatre shows Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and The Adventures of Pinocchio in Seaside, Alys Beach and Rosemary Beach,” Ainsworth said. “We’ll also be performing improv shows, storytelling sessions and we will be providing our popular Kids Improv Bootcamp at The REP Theatre in Seaside.”

Partnering with the communities of Seaside, Alys Beach, Rosemary Beach and Watersound Origins, The REP’s children’s theatre shows are written and directed by the theatre’s executive director, Brook Stetler. Ainsworth said that these shows are created to be an entertaining twist on storybook classics that are loved by children and adults of all ages.

“Over the years, we [The REP] have developed a dedicated and loyal fanbase who bring their families to our performances year after year knowing that our free, family-friendly events are the perfect way to enjoy time with their families and create special memories while at the beach,” Ainsworth said.

The REP will have performances of Jack and the Beanstalk at the Seaside Amphitheater on Monday evenings, Rapunzel at the Alys Beach Amphitheatre on Tuesday evenings, The Adventures of Pinocchio at St. Augustine Green in Rosemary Beach on Wednesday evenings, and special performances of our children’s theatre shows at The Pavilion at the Watersound Town Center on June 6, July 11 and August 1.

In addition to The REP’s children’s theatre performances, The REP will also offer improv shows, storytelling sessions and will host its popular Kids Improv Bootcamp throughout the summer.

Explore Local Water Sports

Summers on the Gulf Coast mean long, hot, sunny days spent at the beach and cooling off in the water! Our area’s calm, clear waters provide the perfect way to escape the heat, relax, exercise or even seek a bit of a thrill. Whether you prefer a boat, board or float, there are endless ways to enjoy everything that the Gulf and local waterways have to offer. Many local businesses offer equipment rentals for a variety of watersport activities so that everyone is able to enjoy their preferred form of boating, sightseeing, boarding, paddling and playing.

Renting a pontoon boat is a great way to enjoy the water with a group of friends or family, and pontoons are a good option for those who are visiting the area for vacation and looking for a low-key day on the water. 30A Watersports offers three different pontoons to choose from that can hold 11 to 15 passengers each. Renters can choose whether to have a captain charter the boat or just rent the boat itself. Tim Nagler, manager, notes that pontoon boats are very easy to drive and operate, and all renters receive a thorough safety briefing.

“We are highly focused on safety. When someone rents a boat, we cover all safety features, how to get in and out of channels, how to anchor the boat, what to do if certain events arise, how to contact the Coast Guard, how and when to use all safety devices like life jackets, flares, horns, whistles, etc. Our website also offers a stateapproved online boat rental course for those who want to operate a boat,” Nagler said. 30A Watersports vessels are docked at Cessna Landing at Hog Town Bayou in Santa Rosa Beach, and renters can enjoy the peace of Choctawhatchee Bay or head out into the Gulf to the popular Crab Island, where the water is shallow, clear and there are good options for spotting dolphins and snorkeling near the jetties.

”The best part of renting a pontoon from us is that you avoid all the traffic in Destin,” Nagler joked. You can supplement your time on the pontoon by including lily pad floats, paddle boards, or coolers in your rental, and for those who are looking for a bit more speed and excitement, 30A Watersports also offers jet ski rentals.

For those who are looking to get in a bit of exercise, renting a paddleboard is a great option. Stand-up paddleboards or SUPs are long, wide, stable boards on which a person stands and uses a long paddle to power and steer the board. Unlike surfing, which requires waves, paddleboarding is easier to do in calm, flat waters, though the boards’ stability allows for use in various water conditions. In operation since 2007, YOLO Board and Beach offers a bit of everything, specializing in boards (paddle and surf), bikes (cruisers and e-bikes) and coffee (organic, ethically-sourced bean blends), though they are best known for their paddle boards. Mitzi Archer, who owns YOLO Board and Bike with her husband, Jeff, emphasizes the benefits of paddle boarding, especially for those who have never tried it and may be curious. “For those looking for a new adventure, paddling never disappoints. It’s a great way to disconnect from our busy lives and reconnect with nature. The percentage of people that are able to surf compared to the percentage of people that are successful on a paddleboard is monumentally higher,” Archer said.

For those on vacation or those who are looking to try out a water sport before purchasing a board, YOLO offers a host of rentals, including paddleboards, boogie boards, cruisers and e-bikes. Patrons can take advantage of walk-up rentals from YOLO’s Hwy. 30A location or have gear delivered free for single- and multi-day rentals from the east end of 30A to Miramar Beach. Those who prefer a bit more guidance, can book one of YOLO’s guided tours, like the Eco Paddle Tour, which

leaves from the Hotz Avenue boat launch and allows paddlers to cruise through Western Lake and out into the Gulf.

Another rental option that offers deliveries along 30A, Miramar Beach, and Sandestin is The Rental Shop 30A, which rents kayaks (single, double, and triple seater options), paddleboards, pontoons, bikes, golf carts and beach bonfire packages. Renters can opt for daily or weekly rental options and rates. The Rental Shop specifically suggests checking out the coastal dune lakes, one of the highly unique features of the area. TRS has a “favorite boat ramp” in Grayton Beach where they can meet renters with kayaks or paddle boards and can suggest how to navigate the coastal dune lakes, lagoons, swimming spots, Gulf outlets and importantly, where NOT to go in order to avoid alligators in the area! Rentals include paddles, life jackets and whistles.

While kayaking and paddleboarding are excellent options for exploring the beauty of our area’s bays, coastal dune lakes and lagoons, there is perhaps no better way to enjoy the full beauty of our area than parasailing! Parasailing involves sitting in a secure harness attached to a small parachute called a parasail wing which is towed behind a boat; parasailing “flights” put riders roughly 300 feet in the air. Though the height of the flight might deter some, parasailing offers a peaceful, bird’s eye view of the coastline, the gorgeous gulf waters and coastal surroundings along with a bit of thrill. By pulling in the tow line and slowing the boat, the crew allows the parasailers a brief dip in the water before speeding up and letting out the line, putting the parasail in flight once again. Parasailing Pirates in Miramar Beach opens for the season over Memorial Day weekend and boasts the “longest parasailing flight on the Emerald Coast.” Parasailers are taken by banana boat (fun in itself!) to the parasailing vessel, where up to 12 passengers can enjoy alternating parasailing ventures (depending on weight and size, 2 to 3 people can parasail at once). Another local option, Miramar Beach Parasail, located on the beach directly behind Pompano Joe’s, offers various types of parasailing experiences: ‘Dipping with the Dolphins’ is their most popular tour and is their first flight of the morning, when wind and water conditions are usually a bit calmer and fliers have a better chance of spotting dolphins and other marine life. If early mornings aren’t your thing, check out the ‘Premium Sunset Parasailing’ tour to view the gorgeous colors of the sunset. Parasailing is a beautiful, breath-taking experience, and not an opportunity to be missed!

Living directly on the water or owning a boat are luxuries not afforded to many, and for those visiting the beautiful Emerald Coast on vacation or for those who don’t have their own personal access to watercraft, 30A and the surrounding areas offer numerous opportunities to rent everything needed for beautiful, exciting days on the water. Trey (11) from Houston has only been Rubik’s cubing since February 14, but can do the 3-inch by 3-inch cube in 22 seconds and the 4-inch by 4-inch in under three minutes. He came to Rosemary Beach for spring break and just loves to hang out at the beach.

Pauline was swinging on the monkey bars and fell off. She broke her arm and got a soft cast. She said she’ll still probably go on the monkey bars when it’s off.

Atlas had the amazing opportunity to visit London and Paris during spring break. The trip was kind of in limbo as their family waited for passports to come in, but they came in time. Atlas says that her favorite part was the Eiffel Tower and that her favorite thing to eat in Paris was a chocolate macaron. (oui, oui! Me too!)

Emilia played lacrosse again this season. She scored a total of 20 goals this season, in comparison to her one goal the first season she played. Her favorite position to play is midi. After one game, she and some of her friends

and teammates got to go to OWA waterpark and play on the water slides and ride the rides multiple times.

Charlie (9) was a part of ECTC’s SpongeBob the Musical for bigs (bigger elementary students). She had the role of Gary as well as other roles. It was her first show with ECTC but not her last.

Kassidy (12) also performed in ECTC’s SpongeBob the Musical. She had the role of Mr. Krabs and did such a stellar job. When one of the other casts needed a replacement Mr. Krabs she was happy to fill in. She is highly considering joining the middle school troupe group for thespians.

Noah (12) from Utah just beat brain cancer!!!!!!!!!! He started having migraines so his mom took him to the doctor. He got an MRI of his head and found out that he had a tumor in the center of his brain. He had two brain surgeries and four months of chemotherapy and radiation. At the end of the chemo and radiation he got to ring the bell and is officially cancer

free. He is so amazing and was able to play football throughout his treatment as quarterback!

Finnley (3) did a Farmer’s Market at Alaqua Animal Refuge in Freeport with his parents. He got to meet a very cool tortoise! His mom seriously wants to adopt him. Finnley liked watching him eat salad.

Gray was so excited to see some of her art that she made at school on display at ArtsQuest! She was really proud to show her family the art that she had created.

Gigi’s Fabulous Kids & Toys has some kids making big moves this year!

Collin Tipton, son of Jaime and Eric, is graduating from South Walton High School. He’ll continue his education at NWFSC and obtain his Associate’s Degree.

Julian Palizzi, son of Christia and Barry is graduating from the Magnet Innovation Center. He will continue his education at UWF and pursue a degree in biology!

And now onto the lost teeth…

Davis (7, but 8 in August) finally lost a tooth! He was so excited and it was such a big deal! It was super wiggly for weeks. He would breathe and it would move which grossed out his big sister. He finally said, “That’s it, I’m pulling this sucker out!” And he did.

Gray got braces and a palate expander. Her mom says she looks so much older instantly.

Pauline lost a tooth! It was super wiggly and her daddy just pulled it out. The tooth fairy came.

Tatum lost a tooth! It wasn’t her first lost tooth but it was super exciting. The school nurse pulled it out because it was just dangling!

Owen had two teeth pulled out by the dentist

to make room for his adult teeth to come down in preparation for braces in the fall!

Rhys (5) lost a tooth and he really means lost it! It fell into the couch! His grown up tooth was already there when the baby tooth fell out. He read and loved the book The Bristle Whistle which helped him understand the tooth fairy.

Atlas lost a tooth at school, in art class! She said her teacher kept the tooth safe by making an enclosure out of scotch tape. The tooth fairy came after!

Emilia got braces and will get an expander soon. She got four top braces and picked gumball pink rubber bands.

Penelope lost one of her premolars! Not too many teeth left to lose!

Share the Beach with Beach-Nesting Birds

Disturbance threatens survival

Many Florida shorebirds and seabirds nest on the open beach, where they lay eggs in shallow scrapes in the sand or sea shells. The nests are so well camouflaged that they can be accidentally trampled by unsuspecting beachgoers. When beach-nesting birds are forced to fly or run from their nests, their eggs and chicks are left vulnerable to the elements and to predators. Disturbances that cause birds to take flight or leave their young may threaten their survival.

Each nest is critical

Populations of beach-nesting birds are declining due to significant modification and disturbance of beaches due to human activities. The fate of each

delicate nest is truly critical to the survival of these birds. By being a responsible beach-user, you can help beach-nesting birds and their young survive. You can help! While enjoying the beach, take these simple steps:

Keep your distance

If birds become agitated or leave their nests, you are too close! A general rule is to stay at least 300 feet from a nest.

Respect posted areas

Avoid posted nesting and resting areas and use designated walkways.

Never intentionally force birds to fly

When birds are chased or disturbed, they use energy they need to reserve for nesting and migration.

Keep pets away from nesting areas

Even well-behaved pets can be perceived as a threat to birds and will disturb them. If you take pets to the beach, keep them leashed and away from nesting areas.

Keep the beach clean and do not feed wildlife

Food scraps attract predators such as raccoons and crows to the beaches. Litter on beaches can entangle birds, sea turtles, and other wildlife.

Spread the word!

If you see people disturbing nesting birds, gently remind them how their actions may hurt birds’ survival. If they continue to disturb nesting birds, please call and report their activities to FWC’s Wildlife Alert hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).

Avoid getting too close to beach-nesting birds

Beach-nesting birds view people and pets as a threat to their nests and young, and will react defensively when you get too close. You will know you are too close if adult birds react to your approach by standing up, running or flying from their nest.

If you remain too close to beach-nesting birds, they may try driving you away by calling out loudly and dive-bombing you. Some species may pretend to have a broken wing to lure your attention away from a nest.

When adult birds are actively defending in these ways, they can’t protect eggs and chicks from the hot sun. Those defensive actions may also attract the attention of predators such as herons or crows.

If beach-nesting birds alert you that you are too close, immediately leave the area! As you leave, please keep a close eye on the ground for eggs or chicks that may be hidden in your path.
