TODDCAST HIGHLIGHT:

Gulf Coast Minority Chamber of Commerce

Greater Pensacola Chamber of Commerce President and CEO, Todd Thomson, sat down with Gulf Coast Minority Chamber of Commerce President Brian Wyer on Pensacola Chamber’s podcast, The Toddcast, to highlight Brian’s work at the Minority Chamber and talk about life during this time of unrest. Brian was born and raised in Pensacola and graduated from the University of West Florida before moving to Tampa, Florida. He pursued a job with IBM, working in various positions for 20 years before shifting to a role in inclusion and diversity.

Wyer moved back to Pensacola in 2013 and became President of the Gulf Coast African American Chamber in 2017. Brian said “within my first five months working at the Chamber people loved what we were doing and they were very happy with what was going on, but they kept saying ‘I’m sorry I can’t join the Chamber because I’m not Black.’ And I would say well, we are not just for Black individuals and Black businesses. We have a wide breadth and range of all different races, nationalities, genders.” That is when they saw the need to expand the name of the organization from the Gulf Coast African American Chamber of Commerce to the Gulf Coast Minority Chamber, so that the organization could cover a broader base and be more open and inclusive to all groups. “Not just in the name,” Wyer says, “but in the mission and purpose.”

The Gulf Coast Minority Chamber spans farther than just Pensacola, but Wyer says right now his focus is on getting the model right in Pensacola and specifically Escambia County. Once they have perfected that, he looks forward to expanding to places as far as Tallahassee where there are not Minority Chambers in place. Wyer mentioned that he has a great relationship with the Santa Rosa Chamber as well as the Pensacola Chamber, Gulf Breeze Chamber, and the surrounding area Chambers, but he is looking forward to branching out in the future to make those connections and further the reach of the Gulf Coast Minority Chamber.

Of course, “branching out” and networking has been difficult over the last few months due to COVID-19.

“It’s been a challenge,” states Wyer, “because the nature of

a Chamber is to be open and responsive…and for people like us that work in this industry it’s really hard not to be able to network the same way we have in the past.” Like most Chambers, the Minority Chamber has pivoted to make accommodations to be able to best serve their businesses during this time and has done so effectively.

Last year we started a new endeavor at the Greater Pensacola Chamber the Total Resource Campaign (TRC).

This was an entirely new way of handling sponsorships and we are looking forward to continuing that success with the 2020 TRC. Through the TRC, we were able to offer our membership a variety of sponsorship levels and introduce new chamber events and initiatives.

As we gear up for our 2020 campaign, I am excited to announce that our 2020 TRC Campaign Chair is David Deliman, Market Vice President for Cox

Communications. David has been a leader in our community and for our chamber and I am excited that he will be leading this year’s campaign.

This year’s TRC will run from September 1 – October 13. We have some new opportunities to offer our membership that will be released this year!

As a reminder, when the TRC ends on October 13th, we will not be selling any additional sponsorships for the calendar year 2021.
