Pensacola is home to so many beautiful brides, and although all the entries were lovely, we fell in love with Jinhi Anders. We hope you like it too. Jinhi Evans met Dave Anders at the old Summerhouse restaurant in Fort Walton Beach where the pair both worked.

Though Jinhi initially had a bad impression of Dave’s forward ways, she says it soon became apparent that they had electric chemistry and in 2003 they became a couple. In the early days of their relationship, Jinhi and Dave often spent 10

evenings engrossed in long conversations on the beach after work, and years later, after one dinner date at a beachside restaurant, Jinhi had no idea he was taking her on a moonlit walk to the site of those early romantic nights to propose.

The wedding took place last November, and the couple was keen to celebrate the cooler season along with asserting their personal style.

The style was decidedly modern with a rustic and masculine vibe, as seen in the color scheme of black, ivory, burgundy and metallic tones. One popular detail at the wedding was the unique take on a groom’s cake: Dave wanted gourmet seasonal doughnuts in flavors like red velvet, pumpkin and caramel. The Anders spent a gorgeous honeymoon exploring the jungles and

beaches of Belize. From the trip, Jinhi says the private tour of the Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave was definitely a bucket list-worthy excursion.

Since then, Jinhi says being newlyweds has breathed new life into their romance and propelled them happily into the next chapter of their lives.

About Our 1st Runner Up Annie Zeiger Martillaro / Photo by Documented Photography Annie Martillano and her husband Chris met through mutual friends and started dating after a few serendipitous crossing of paths while out and about in Downtown Pensacola. When Annie went to Jacksonville for a half-marathon run with her friends in 2013, Chris caught her off-guard by showing up to the beach house with a ring and permission from her father. The two were married the day before St. Patty’s Day in 2014 at Tiger Point Golf Club. The wedding took place under the pavilion, where the backdrop of oaks made for a naturally elegant ceremony. The weather was rainy so the couple couldn’t get married on the green, but the spring showers weren’t going to stop a determined Annie and Chris. After the ceremony, the couple headed to the tropical beaches of Negril, Jamaica for an intimate honeymoon setting. Annie’s two cents for newly engaged couples: “I would suggest to remember the reason you’re getting married, and let that be your guide. Keep the destination in mind, but enjoy the journey.”

About Our 2nd Runner Up Tiffany Wynn / Photo by Documented Photography Tiffany Latshaw and her husband David were high school sweethearts who married in October of 2014. When the couple took a trip to the British Isles, David surprised Tiffany on the fourth night by dropping down on one knee and revealing a diamond ring, which he had hidden carefully before the flight. The two swapped vows under oaks in Pensacola’s Bartram Park. Since the couple couldn’t bring family and friends to New Orleans for the wedding ceremony, they decided to bring New Orleans to Pensacola and second-lined around Downtown Pensacola with a brass band and parade of guests. Tiffany and David traveled the Mae Hong Son Loop in Thailand on the back of a motorcycle for a five-day, liberating spur-ofthe-moment adventure for their honeymoon. Tiffany says the best part of being a newlywed is feeling the change, as the two act and think as one unit—becoming two halves of one whole. Tiffany’s advice to newly engaged couples: “Embrace the engagement and celebrate being engaged. Don’t stress about the ‘small stuff’ for the wedding.”

Spring is in the air—well, almost. Traditionally, as a symbol of blossoming new beginnings, spring has been considered the season for matrimony. Yet, couples today are gradually veering from the path of tradition for a unique journey into uncharted wedding territory. Nontraditional or offbeat weddings are on the rise and have already taken place across Pensacola.

Sue and Ed Spencer specialize in hosting both traditional and nontraditional wedding parties at First Day Entertainment, where they offer master of ceremonies, officiant and DJ services. The duo found their niche in wedding planning after attending a poorly executed ceremony, which they believed would have benefited from better organization.

“We decided that the couple deserved better and decided to train, study and prepare to ensure that a better alternative was made available,” Sue said, regarding First Day Entertainment’s dedication to meeting every client’s nuptial needs. “While it might sound like arrogance, it actually comes from a place of love. To put our hearts and souls into delivering the best possible experience for our clients and their guests is the core of what we do.”

Themed weddings are growing in popularity, and the Spencers have worked with Star Wars, Harry Potter and Batman concepts. For Sue and Ed, as well as their clients, themed weddings are not simply costume parties but serve as a reflection of a couple’s personalities and passions.

“We find most couples want a fully themed wedding but their parents or grandparents are concerned it may become a farce or a caricature of a wedding,” Sue said.

we bring in theming elements without losing the focus on the love is the most common.”

The goal for Sue and Ed is making each wedding a unique experience, with or without cosplay.

However, on the subject of costumes, the Spencers gave away their free services to a cosplaying couple at Pensacon last year, and plan to award another lucky couple the same prize at this year’s Pensacon.

They are still on the lookout for Pensacon wedding candidates.

Melissa and Jeffrey Knott tied the knot at Old Hickory Whiskey Bar on Gallery Night last year, when they disguised their wedding ceremony as a going-away party to surprise a friend. Although the bar might be considered a nontraditional choice for a wedding venue, Old Hickory was a location of sentimental value for both Melissa and Jeffrey.

“People often forget that a wedding is a testament of your love and commitment for each other that is strengthened by the people you love,” said Melissa Knott, Old Hickory bartender and surprise bride.

“Old Hickory is where we became friends.”

Instead of waiting until after the ceremony, Melissa and Jeffrey went on a week-long honeymoon prior to throwing their surprise wedding at Old Hickory. Guests and friends of the bride and groom caught the couple off-guard when they revealed a wedding cake topped with yellow Minion figurines inspired by Despicable Me. “We weren’t in a rush to get married and neither of us were big fans of the big traditional events,” Melissa said. “So we had a kind of a running joke between us that any time someone would ask us when we were getting married

we’d say when we ran into an ordained Elvis.”

To make it even more nontraditional, another friend of the Knotts donned a bejeweled, white Elvis suit with glasses, boots and a 1950s pompadourstyle hair to perform the wedding ceremony. Melissa and Jeffrey didn’t have to fly to Vegas to run into their ordained Elvis.

Amy and Shawn Brown won the 2014 Blockparty Wedding contest, which granted them the free services of The Wedding Studio. To enter the contest, Amy and Shawn Brown won the 2014 Blockparty Wedding contest any soon-to-be bride and groom must write a separate his and her story, as well as a combined “our story” piece for submission. The pair whose stories receive the highest number of votes wins the Blockparty Giveaway package.

The Wedding Studio is a collective of local wedding vendors who sponsor one expense-free Blockparty wedding per year. The Wedding Studio provides services including but not limited to cake, catering, flower arrangements, downtown ceremony and reception venues, hair and makeup, as well as bride and groom ensembles.

A friend of the Knotts donned a bejeweled, white Elvis suit with glasses, “Shawn, Kenzie and boots and a 1950s pompadour-style hair to perform the wedding I met Heather Pelham with ceremony Emerald Coast Custom Cakes for the cake tasting and also to design each layer and flavor,” blushing Blockparty bride, Amy Brown said. “I told her my ideas and she made them happen.

Since we weren’t having a traditional wedding, I decided against a traditional white wedding cake. Our wedding cake had three layers all with different flavors.”

Shawn proposed to Amy on Palafox in the summer, and the two were married in front of The Wedding Studio in the fall.

So the special spot where the pair became engaged was also Melissa and Jeffrey Knott tied the knot at Old Hickory Whiskey Bar on Gallery Night last year. where they officially became the Browns.

“Some of the most memorable moments from the ceremony was the attempt to break a Guinness Book of World Records for walking down the longest wedding aisle that was personalized and monogrammed by Rae with I Do! Aisle Runner, and Tower Drones recording the walk and the ceremony,” Amy said, recalling her special day. “The most memorable moment from the reception was my daughter McKenzie giving her Maid of Honor speech, it was so sweet and heartfelt that I was in tears. I have gone back and read it several times.”

If there’s one thing to glean from these tales of nontraditional weddings, it’s that going offbeat strengthens rather than diminishes the bond a couple shares with each other, as well as with family and friends, by allowing the two to bring together and share what they love with who they love most.

We loved this submission to our cover contest and thought it was the perfect example of an offbeat wedding. Hayley Moran and Travis Lakeman brought their own unique personalities to their nuptials. A seamstress friend designed Hayley’s playful dress and they were married under a custom gazebo, which was built by the groom and his brother in the families’ backyard.

One Love

or decades, perhaps even centuries, same-sex couples have longed to be recognized as equal to heterosexual individuals in this nation, to have their love documented in courts the way it is acknowledged

in their hearts. Through sweat and tears, through setbacks, overturned rulings, and unimaginable ostracization, they are one step closer to the equality they should enjoy anyway as members of a nation that promises liberty and justice for all.

That step was long overdue, but it was finally taken in Florida on Jan. 6, 2015,

when the first state-recognized same-sex marriages in the area’s history were officiated. The past two years have seen great advances in the search for marriage equality in the United States, and as Florida joins the growing majority of states that legally recognize same-sex unions, there are a slew of excited couples tying the knot and proving that love can transcend gender-based divides.

It all started in February of 2014, when civil rights attorneys filed a lawsuit on behalf of a Florida same-sex couple that was actually married in Canada. The case, Brenner v. Scott, would become synonymous with Florida’s fight for gay rights over the next several months.

Simultaneous to these proceedings, American Civil Liberties Union attorneys filed a similar case, Grimsley v. Scott, on behalf of eight couples that had been married in other states and wished for Florida courts to recognize the union. These cases were soon combined so that their ruling would have implications for the entire state.

“Our federal lawsuit in Tallahassee was consolidated with the sole other federal lawsuit,” said Benjamin Stevenson, a local ACLU attorney.

After they were consolidated, Judge Robert Hinkle ruled that Florida’s statutory and constitutional bans (approved via amendment in 2008) were not constitutional. The order was stayed temporarily, and after the US Supreme Court denied a request to extend the stay on Dec. 19, 2014, the stay expired and gay marriage became legal in Florida on Jan. 6, 2015.

On Jan. 6, it was clear to the Clerk’s offices that demand was high. The Escambia County Clerk issued about 90 licenses to wed that first day, compared to the usual five or so.

“These requests are no different than those for any marriage license for two people who love each other,” said Stevenson.

While some administrative changes still have to take place, Stevenson reported that there are no remaining legal differences in Florida between married straight and gay couples.

“We are still waiting for the Social Security Administration to update their internal guidance so that Florida marriages of same-sex couples are fully recognized for all purposes,” said

Robert Smith and Jason Wilkins were among the first in Escambia County to be issued a marriage license on Jan. 6 following the overturn of the ban. They had been together for 11 years previous to this momentous occasion and, according to Wilkins, had been married for a long time in their minds.

“The legal aspect of marriage was important to us, though,” said Wilkins. “We wanted to be able to make legal, medical and financial decisions for one another. It’s important that we can share in the responsibility of each other’s lives.”

The loving couple was issued a license—a symbol of their new lives together—early that Tuesday and had a ceremony behind the Maritime Park later that evening.

“We wanted to have a real ceremony, and friends and family encouraged us to do so,” said Wilkins. “I’m glad we did. We’re still adjusting to the married life and to getting to call each other ‘husband’ for real.”

Another couple that was wed first thing Tuesday had become a prominent figurehead of gay rights in Pensacola. Civil rights leader Dr. Jim Merritt married his husband Albert Leach following a long fight to enjoy the rights and privileges of legal marriage. In 2004, Dr. Merritt unsuccessfully sued Orange County for a marriage license and has been a faithful supporter of the journey toward marriage equality ever since. The couple has been together for more than 20 years.

“We have wanted to bring marriage equality to as many places as possible for many years,” said Merritt.

Merritt also serves as the senior pastor of Holy Cross Metropolitan Community Church and officiated weddings for 20 giddy couples on Jan. 6 before finally taking that momentous step himself, a stride decades in the making.

“That day is actually my birthday, so it was a grand celebration to wed and celebrate my birthday on the same day,” said Merritt.

Both Merritt and Leach reported a happy marriage thus far and a greater, unexpected appreciation for their official union and what it represents.

“I didn’t know how it would feel, but it feels absolutely wonderful,” said Merritt. “It has brought us unexpectedly deeper levels of intimacy and I wish the same experience on everyone else getting married.”

Merritt and Leach was not the only gay couple pivotal to the statewide fight for marriage equality. Lindsay Myers and Sarah Humlie were plaintiffs in the ACLU suit that was consolidated with the federal lawsuit. Myers and Humlie were married in Washington, DC in 2012 but were dismayed to discover that Humlie could not join Myers’ insurance plan because their home state of Florida did not recognize their union.

“If Lindsay had married a man, he would have no problem getting on the insurance,” said Humlie. “The ACLU saw that as a valid case.”

Myers and Humlie has been together since 2010 and wanted both the legal and tangible benefits of a recognized marriage. After waiting for some administrative changes after the stay expired on Jan. 6, Humlie was finally able to join her wife’s healthcare plan on Feb. 1, a blessing that was even more important given Humlie’s recent cancer diagnosis.

“It is a big and important accomplishment,” said Humlie. “It really hit me the other day when I was in the pharmacy and I saw these other couples getting some prescriptions. I thought to myself, ‘We get to be the same as them now.’

Our love is just as valid as anyone else’s. It feels good to feel like we’re not being treated differently.”

Most vendors in Pensacola are just as happy about these developments as the newlyweds.

With an expected increase in business of up to 30 percent, these merchants are happy to help couples across the city and state publicly recognize their marriage.

One vendor in particular is enjoying both sides of this ruling, as he has been the only openly gay wedding planner on the coast for some time.

Darrin Land of Legacy Event Design has been designing and coordinating same-sex weddings for years and looks forward to the greater meaning these ceremonies now have for him and his clients.

“We have had amazing couples traveling to states where same-sex marriage was legal and then planning the celebration here on the panhandle,” said Land.

After the news finally broke that gay marriage would soon be legal, Land’s phone rang off the hook with business requests from enthusiastic couples who just couldn’t wait to profess their love.

“I answered 20 to 25 calls in the first 48 hours,” said Land. “Being openly gay, I am glad to see Florida on the right side of history. We are the 36th state to legalize marriage for everyone.

Florida has joined the new reality.”

Proving that gay couples don’t ruin the fun for straight couples, Barrett and Beth McClean of Barrett McClean photography are overjoyed at the prospect of capturing the special moments same-sex couples can now share together as they officially begin their lives together.

“We are thrilled about the ruling in favor of gay marriage,” said Beth. “It’s been a long time coming. There is no bias whatsoever on our end, and from purely business and financial standpoints, this is of course a great thing for wedding vendors.”

The fight for nationwide marriage equality is not over. The US Supreme Court recently said that it would take up the topic this year and issue a once-and-for-all opinion, probably early in the summer. Concerning this upcoming battle, perhaps Stevenson said it best, echoing famous sentiments by Theodore Parker and Martin Luther King, Jr. “Opponents of justice for the LGBT community will continue to attempt to impede the LGBT community from obtaining formal legal equality,” said Stevenson. “However, ‘The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.’”

As the first European settlement, Pensacola is teeming with interesting historic sites, many of which can be rented out as event space. A historic locale for a wedding ceremony or reception is a great way to celebrate your hometown during your own historic event. Old Christ Church is a popular spot for its restored 1879 appearance and location in the heart of downtown. Another distinctive venue is the Museum of Commerce. The quaint recreation of a turn-of-the-century Pensacola streetscape will add a unique atmosphere to your ceremony.

“Historic locations add a sense of romance and elegance to events, but getting married in a place like Old Christ Church can add that little something extra by connecting couples and their guests directly to Pensacola’s past,” says UWF Historic Trust event coordinator Casey Campbell. Campbell says Old Christ Church is especially popular because it’s one of the oldest churches in the state and people love being a part of that long history.

Growing up, I was not the type of young woman that dreamed of my future wedding, planning out my perfect dress and exotic flower arrangements while leafing through wedding magazines.

I was actively repelled by the idea of a large, frilly, expensive event, and as my mother was delighted to remind me throughout my ten months of wedding planning, as a teen I swore up and down I’d never take part in such frivolity. While my angsty teen self might be disappointed to know I did in fact spring for a big affair—white dress and all—I like to imagine she would’ve been pleased with my personalized and playful style, and she would’ve had a killer time at the reception.

When my fiancé and I got engaged after roughly five and half years together in August 2013, it was long-awaited on my part, but I had thought very little about the actual event that would mark the beginning of our marriage. He proposed during a trip to Peru, where his parents were both born, while we were visiting to attend his cousin’s wedding, and this trip and his cultural identity—along with each of our quirky sensibilities—would color our ceremony and reception as well as the planning process.

With no idea where to begin, we started jotting down words we’d want to describe our big day. “Playful,” “joyful,” and “interactive” were some of our initial words. We wanted an event that wasn’t too formal or traditional where guests could engage in activities and feel a part of the celebration. Early in the process we managed to nail down some big pieces of the puzzle: the date, venue and caterer.

As a couple that spends a lot of time downtown, we looked there first for venues, settling on the historic Barkley House. We picked a date in mid-November hoping to hit the sweet spot between active storm season and chilly winter winds. Appetite 4 Life was a no-brainer for catering because I had enjoyed their delicious and varied food options at a tasting and we loved their mission of serving meals to homebound and HIV-positive members of the community.

Their chef even worked with us to make some Latin entrees like escabeche and a

popular Peruvian stir fry lomo saltado.

From there we faced a huge and daunting array of details and choices, with little to no idea what step to tackle next. Enter Darrin Land of Legacy Event Designs. At our initial meetings we started talking about our big picture ideas and priorities, with Darrin taking notes that filled in the blanks on the necessities as well as scrawling down the offhand suggestions we threw around.

He made us clarify our theme and style, which we had been describing as rustic and quirky, with natural elements and vintage flair, something one could arguably describe as “hipster barn wedding” style.

True to our hipster style, we picked our color scheme from the promotional materials from an electronic music and art festival we attended in Asheville that April.

One thing Darrin made us do as homework after an early meeting was make a Pinterest board of things we liked for our wedding.

Initially I bristled at this suggestion, but it

turned out to be incredibly helpful and fun.

It was particularly helpful for my fiancé who was extremely picky about stylistic choices (for instance, he adamantly opposed tissue poufs and insisted on having an array of birdhouses as decorative flourishes) and he loved having visuals to express his likes and dislikes.

Our Pinterest board guided our floral arrangements, which included bright pops of our colors (deep coral, pumpkin and mint) and woody elements, seeds and berries, and succulents. Rodney at Blooms A Million made gorgeous bouquets and decorations that perfectly suited our theme. A few weeks before the wedding I texted Darrin to ask if I could have a bird nest incorporated into my bouquet—a nod toward Tobi’s birdhouse obsession and my newly reinvigorated “nesting” tendency.

I was ecstatic to see that my Technicolor bouquet was encircled in a beautiful nest, and the wrist corsages for our moms were

tiny nests filled with berries, a succulent and a flower.

For our dessert, we wanted something other than a traditional cake, and Celeste Southard at Appetite immediately suggested Up 2 You Cupcakes. We loved the idea of cupcakes and Up 2 You’s unique approach to their business. With Up 2 You, you choose several flavors each of cake, filling, frosting and toppings, and guests can choose their own flavor combinations.

This allowed us to incorporate staple flavors like chocolate and vanilla, and bring in fall tastes like a pumpkin vanilla cake, a spiced apple filling and a salted caramel frosting. The other factor that convinced us to go with Up 2 You is that for every cupcake purchased they donate a cupcake to a nonprofit of the client’s choice. We chose to donate our corollary 200 cupcakes to Appetite.

A friend, Mike Kilmer, officiated our ceremony and we started working on that

about two months before the wedding. We started by meeting with him to discuss the basics of what we wanted: a secular ceremony that didn’t go over 15 minutes.

He gave us some great advice and we continued working together on a shared Google document to perfect the wording.

Earlier in 2014 we happened to attend a friend’s wedding where we saw Mike meandering through pockets of guests gathered along the shore of Bayou Chico at a park in Navy Point, playing lilting tunes on an accordion before the ceremony. We loved it and asked if he would also play before ours in addition to his officiating duties.

We wanted a short, sweet ceremony, and incorporating some Peruvian traditions into our ceremony and reception was very important. Tobi’s family found a particular Peruvian ceremony which we modified slightly. In it, Tobi’s sister draped a colorful woven scarf around Tobi and my shoulders

and tied it together around us, representing our own families being woven together.

Quinoa was scattered on the earth as an offering to Pachamama, the name for the sacred earth mother in indigenous Peruvian tradition.

To give the reception another touch of Peru, we incorporated a modern tradition popular at weddings in the country: Hora Loca, or “crazy hour.” Meant to put guests back in party mode following dinner, crazy hour is exactly what it sounds like, and it’s often accompanied with a theme, costumed characters or other entertainers.

At the wedding we attended in Peru, crazy hour kicked off with the entrance of a stilt walker, some costumed entertainers including a giant guinea pig, a bevy of balloons and a decorated oversized picture frame that people passed around the dance floor while snapping photos.

Our crazy hour, though less extensive, was just as crazy. The groomsmen spent

are another item you’ll likely need to rent separately, especially if you want a certain color. If you have a buffet, plan out plating details like whether you’ll have water glasses filled on tables or self service, and same with plates and silverware.

More couples are having ceremonies and receptions in one place, so think through the logistics of that transition carefully. Will you rent separate chairs for the ceremony and reception, and if they need to be moved, who will move them? Talk to the caterer or on-site coordinator about whether staff could help. Plan a layout that makes the transition smooth and lets guests move around and mingle during the event. Make a lounge space or a conversation area near the dance floor with high top tables to set down drinks and relax between dances.

Make a bad weather plan.

No one wants to consider the possibility of anything less than perfect weather on their wedding day, but with weather it’s always a good idea to plan for the worst and hope for the best. For Tobi and Emily’s wedding, we planned to have an open tent frame strung with lights, but when the temperature dropped the week of the wedding, we had an emergency meeting and agreed to put up the canvas tent top and three sides and place heaters inside to trap in warmth. Even if your ceremony and reception are inside, consider what you’d need for photos or getting the bridal party from one place to another in the event of rain.

Our DJs kicked the music into high gear, alternating between blocks of infectious pop and high-energy Spanish music. We also passed around a homemade foamcore picture frame, with guests taking turns getting in the frame with me, making for some of my favorite photos of the night.

The day of the wedding would have passed by in a blur had I not heeded the advice given to me by a friend of a friend I met at a party as we chatted over cocktails: stay mindful and in the present moment during the course of the wedding day.

After all the planning, mulling over choices, waffling between options, hours of internet research, and the endless slips of paper with haphazardly scrawled lists and reminders, I vowed to treat the wedding like a rollercoaster. I was on for the ride and I was going to enjoy every second no matter what happened.

The surreal experience of living out a day I’d imagined countless times made staying mentally present a genuine challenge. That morning as my six bridesmaids, mom, aunt Gail, two hairstylists and a makeup artist buzzed around the loft at Volume One Salon, I could easily shut my mind off and marvel at the chaos around me, focused on each step in the process as it unfolded: have hair pinned in rollers, get makeup done, finish hairstyle, refill mimosa, pin on veil, get into complicated undergarments with help from bridesmaids, etc.

Not until I was standing at the top of the staircase outside the Barkley House with my parents on either side of me did the weight of the day wash over me. I thought of the year or so before Tobi proposed when I officially started counting down the days till we were engaged, the sunny day at Machu Picchu when he finally did, the welling excitement we’d shared for the past month, when it finally seemed real that our wedding would actually happen. Like a terrified rider on a slow ascent up that first big hill, I took a few deep breaths and started down the steps, trying to remember everything we’d gone over the previous freezing night at the rehearsal.

Looking at all our photographs the following month, we were delighted to relive the day through the vivid, brilliant images. Barrett and Beth McClean beautifully captured the overflowing love and sense of fun that day, and with them we had been completely at ease, even sometimes camera-shy Tobi. I also saw plenty of lovely details that I had missed during the actual event. I never stepped back to take in the gorgeous and simple table decorations. We completely forgot to put our own prints on our cutesy “thumbprint guestbook,” nor did either of us see the rock candy favors on display that we had spent so much time on, gluing together and tying an elaborate tag stamped with “Love Rocks! Emily & Tobi” two hundred times.

What we do remember clearly, which was also perfectly captured in the photos, was the feeling of the day. As a couple that loves to host parties, we thought of our wedding as the ultimate soiree for ourselves, our friends and our family, an event that captured our fun, loving, playful, goofy style and personalities. Colorful, boisterous, and a little extravagant, it was the culmination of so many combined efforts of our family, friends, vendors and planner, with a little help from us, and to my memory, it was just right. As any great wedding should be, it was a perfect kick-off party for the next great rollercoaster ride of our life: marriage.

Therefore, you should talk with a caterer for a menu consultation before your budget is finalized. This should be done at the same time you make plans for your venue. A common mistake is consulting with a caterer last, when much of the budget has been spent, leaving less for food and beverages.

Caterers typically have an incidental charges section on their website or in their brochure. It will give you a good idea of some of the things you may have forgotten and items to be prepared to pay for in addition to food costs. Some examples include champagne toasts, bar set up, linens, plates and service items, and your cake service. That’s right - cake service is usually not included in the price of your wedding cake so you’ll need to coordinate with your caterer or wedding planner for the necessary plates, forks and napkins.

If you don’t have a wedding coordinator, consider appointing someone like a sister or close friend to be responsible and give them the authority to make last-minute decisions. This will keep your caterer, baker, florist and other vendors from worrying the bride with questions about set up.

For the bar, most people believe serving only beer and wine is the more economical choice. However, it is less expensive to offer a limited full bar that includes basic liquors. When comparing costs it is important to understand that most bars will serve approximately 26 drinks per fifth of liquor while a bottle of wine will serve only four 6-ounce glasses. Some liquor stores will allow you to purchase your alcohol and return any unopened bottles.

If you go the limited full bar route, you can steer clear of liquors that “inspire” the consumption of shots (like tequila) by having some pre-mixed specialty drinks such as margaritas instead.

Having only pre-mixed signature drinks is another bar option.

Hiring professional bartender(s) will allow you to have better portion (and cost) control and will give you a responsible person who can monitor your guests; and, should a problem arise, they can handle it without burdening someone from the wedding party.

If you’re on a budget, having a Sunday afternoon wedding is a great idea. Most venues offer discounted rates on Sundays. An afternoon wedding also allows you to have more limited food offerings instead of a full meal. However, if your reception time does fall during a customary meal time, your guests will be expecting a meal. Offering a dinner buffet is a less expensive option than either a plated dinner or having a banquet of heavy hors d’oeuvres. This is because serving hors d’oeuvres requires more ingredients, people and kitchen hours to prep and assemble and more catering staff and equipment to serve than are required to prepare and staff a buffet.

Keeping these tips in mind, should help make your reception planning and execution a smooth and enjoyable experience.
