I love food. I really do. Those of you who know me personally know that I enjoy nothing more than a great meal and while I can cook a few dishes, my talents in the kitchen definitely have their limitations. So naturally, I have a great deal of love and admiration for those who can command a kitchen and turn out delicious cuisine. And, while the ability to cook great food knows no gender barriers, this month, in honor of our annual women’s issue, we’ve profiled five amazing local female chefs who are shining bright in the local culinary scene. I’ve had the good fortune to eat meals prepared by each of these talented women and I’ve enjoyed them all. I had Mother’s Day Brunch at Jaco’s this year and I loved the Brie stuffed French toast. I stop by Carmen’s as often as I can. Mari delicately and expertly blends flavors to create the best soups in town. I recently had dinner at Iron and Amber’s desserts were unbelievably delicious. I think our table had one of everything, but my favorite was the berry cobbler. My mom and I frequently visit the Magnolia for its welcoming atmosphere, great music and delicious comfort food. And End of the Line is a must visit for the health conscious foodie—vegan or not, their food is fantastic. In the spirit of sisterhood and great local food, I hope you enjoy reading about these talented women and I hope you venture out and try a dish or two soon. From international fare to American comfort food and from fine dining to local joints, these culinary creatives are sure to whip up something amazing to please your palate.

Also in this issue, the ever talented Rebecca Taylor, owner of Vivid. Artistic Hair Design created some gorgeous must have hairstyles for summer. The photos, shot by Melissa Wilson, turned out lovely and I hope it provides some inspiration for your summer style. I love the old-world braids and the balayage. Which ones do you love?

Being a woman sometimes comes with its own strange set of issues. In this issue Emily Lullo tackles a subject many women struggle with—body image. In this ‘skinny is best’ society, it can be difficult to have a healthy view of one’s body, but I’m happy to see more young women embracing their curves and shunning the unhealthy diets and unrealistic expectations so prevalent in modern media. As a mom, I also hope to instill a strong sense of self worth in my daughter that has nothing to do with what she looks like.

Read Emily’s article on page 12 for some thought provoking discussion and great suggestions to help you develop and maintain a positive body image.

Finally, I am a bit of a frugal shopper. I especially hate to waste money on a product I may not end up liking. If the enormous success of subscription based trial services is any indication, I am not alone. ROSES REGATTA

8/2-3 Women who love the excitement and rush of a good competition will enjoy the upcoming all female sailing race, Race for the Roses Aug. 2 at the Pensacola Beach Yacht Club. Entry fees are $50 per boat with an early bird discount of $10 to those who register by July 25. Late registration will be held Aug. 1.

Race for the Roses is the only all women’s race in the Gulf Coast, making this a unique event.

Women from all over the Gulf Coast come to Pensacola to get their hands a little dirty with some friendly competition. The money raised from the event goes to the Escambia-Santa Rosa Special Olympics sailing team.

Ellen Hunt and Karen Kriegel started Race for the Roses in 1987, making this year the race’s 27th anniversary. Deborah Dunlap, Nelda Jacques, Sue Perry, Janet Peters, and Beverly Vaughn joined Hunt and Kriegel to make up the original Race committee.

Race for the Roses is the third and final race held in the series of women’s races, following the Bikini Regatta and the Fast Women Regatta. While this race is strictly female, the other two races allow male crewmembers as long as half of the crew is comprised of women, including a female helmsman and skipper.

There are markers that designate the course leading the sailboats upwind and all around the bay. According to Hunt and Leigh Holbrook, chairman for Race for the Roses, the race can take anywhere from 90 minutes to three hours depending on the weather. Each boat has to have a Performance Handicap Racing fleet (PHRF) rating, which is a rating certificate that includes how many members are allowed on each boat. The PHRF rating is also used to determine who wins because the number of crewmembers on each boat is taken into consideration when the final points are tallied.

“With our boat it can be eight or nine people,” says Hunt. “Sometimes you don’t need that many people because you don’t want the extra weight to slow you down. It sounds like a lot of people, but we’ll have two people on the bow working the jib and the spinnaker. We’ll have people in the middle that go from side to side of the boat to keep the weight steady and also to help whoever is on the foredeck.”

Following the race is the award ceremony with trophies, roses, and goodybags. A dinner for everyone involved also follows the race. According to Hunt some friendly banter typically happens at the after party, especially if someone fouls another crew on the course while on the water. The good-natured badinage between sailors may include “a few curse words if you get too close or ram each other’s boat,” says Holbrook. “All kinds of stuff.”

“At the bar, afterwards, we’re all friends, but on the water, oh no,” says Hunt. “I don’t think so.”

Hunt says there has been anywhere from 15 to 20 boats in years past and this year they expect at least 10 boats.

“It is amazing that it has sustained 27 years because of all the economic troubles and challenges but the sailing community and the whole area has survived,” says Holbrook.

Love your body! Embrace the skin you’re in! You are beautiful!

You might roll your eyes at these positive affirmations, and you likely wouldn’t be alone.

Various studies have shown that staggering numbers of women are unhappy with their bodies, and the estimated $60 billion spent annually by Americans on weight loss products and services reflects that. This state of affairs reveals a need for a collective rethinking of our standards and ideals of beauty and ourselves—not for scores of women to go running to gyms and plastic surgeons.

Body image is the way we perceive and the way we assume others perceive our bodies.

Influences on body image range from our peers, family, social pressures and often most detrimentally, media. It can also be extremely subjective and fluid, affected easily by mood, environment and physical experience. While we may rationally realize that body image itself is psychological and mostly tied to self-esteem, having little to do with actual physical attractiveness as judged by others, it can be incredibly difficult to extricate one’s own body image from the deeply held cultural norms and expectations that surround the modern human experience. However, working toward an improved body image can have massive effects on psychological and physical wellbeing—and all for the better.

Navigating our own issues with our bodies can be difficult enough but is further compounded by the myriad mixed messages that various media send. Women’s magazines at once tell readers to love the skin they’re in, while at the same time hosting page after page of svelte models and digitally altered images of gorgeous actresses. Dr. Tressa Kelly, basic course director for the University of West Florida’s Communication Arts Department, says media is a huge factor in how women view themselves and other women.

“One of the biggest challenges women face when developing a healthy and positive image is media,” says Kelly. “When we throw the term ‘media’ out, we are talking about everything from advertising to reality television to celebrity culture.”

Women and body image continue to be hot topics in media, and in some ways the world seems to be moving in a positive direction. Examples like the runaway success of Lena Dunham’s HBO series Girls, which prominently features

Dunham and her average figure (often unclothed), is part of a slowly growing trend in showing more diverse shapes on screen, but then the vitriolic backlash against Dunham’s body and looks in particular underscores the continuing struggle for viewers to accept less-than-perfect bodies.

Another popular show, FOX’s The Mindy Project, features curvy showrunner and star Mindy Kaling, and Netflix’s blockbuster series Orange is the New Black showcases a sprawling ensemble cast that is extremely diverse in race, age and body type. These examples seem to represent a shift toward at the very least greater variation in the types of women represented on TV screens, reflecting back to a greater number of women images that are more in line with what they see in their own mirror.

“We make sense of the world and what happens in our lives through the telling and retelling of stories. Stories are inherently persuasive,” Kelly says. “When we hear and see these stories, we seek to identify with them. Thus, the media is a powerful force because of the constant story it tells women about what it means to be beautiful and desirable.”

Television, movies and magazines still offer a laughably miniscule representation of the range of looks, sizes and shapes of average or not-so-average women’s bodies. The fact remains that the constant slew of images of women in media are often thin, sexualized and digitally altered, and the margin of what’s considered beautiful or even acceptable is smaller than the waistline of Hollywood’s latest ‘it’ girl.

Various media sources also make more blatant commentary on acceptable and unacceptable bodies, taking direct aim at real women, whether it’s a starlet that dares to leave the house without first applying makeup or someone who has the nerve to put on a bathing suit without first starving herself to a size 0. While it’s easy to condemn the body-shaming taking place in those instances, women often participate it in themselves as well, whether by giddily consuming these stories and photos or by habitually making disparaging comments about other women or their own bodies.

“Because it is summer, it is nearly impossible to escape photographs presenting the ‘best’ and ‘worst’ celebrity beach bodies,” Kelly says. “This best/worst dichotomy is particularly problematic because of the body-shaming behavior it both induces and perpetuates.”

By inviting readers to harshly judge the bodies they see, women are presented with the stark consequences of not “measuring up” to beauty standards, and because women constantly compare themselves to others, this often induces guilt and shame, Kelly says. Recognizing the cycle that perpetuates body shaming and leads to negative feelings and poor body image is a positive first step toward developing a better relationship with one’s own body.

Unfortunately, the pervasiveness of body shaming and poor body image among women is such that engaging in negative body talk has become a normal form of bonding for many women. The phenomenon known as “fat talk” occurs when women disparage their own bodies in a group, whether jokingly discussing feeling like a cow after a hearty lunch or denigrating a certain body part after an unsatisfying trip to the fitting room. The typical response to a friend’s negative body remarks is to join in, picking apart one’s own body in solidarity, whether or not it’s how she truly feels, leaving everyone feeling worse off.

Improving women’s relationships with their bodies must happen on a cognitive level, starting with the way we think about bodies, beauty, and what it means to look and feel good.

In order to build a better body image, women must work to acknowledge the constant barrage of imagery that reinforces a narrow and unattainable ideal of beauty. Women can look to their own ideas of beauty in other women in their own lives that they find beautiful and think about what they find beautiful about them. Kelly says women can also think about when they themselves feel most beautiful.

Industries that profit from the compulsion to attain a certain beauty standard—women’s magazines, weight loss companies, plastic surgeons, fashion designers—aren’t likely to change the messages they send. What women can do is recognize the effects of those messages and how they respond to them, as well as acknowledging that women don’t need to engage in the culture of competition with other women.

“Empowerment begins with recognizing that something is not right. It is important that women realize our worth is not tied up in someone else’s,” Kelly says. “Our health, our bodies, our sense of beauty is ours. Women need to (re)write their own story.”

WHAT YOU CAN DO The answer to better body image isn’t in a bottle of diet pills, but in the way we think about our bodies. Focus on your body’s strengths and abilities and less on whether you fit into an “ideal” jean size, and try to make positive changes in the ways you engage with other women about body image.

Be active—but not for the reason you think.

Exercise or engage in physical activities as a way to treat yourself right, not for the sole purpose of losing weight. Do an activity that you enjoy for the mental and emotional benefits, and appreciate your body’s abilities without criticizing.

Reflect honestly on how you engage with body shaming in media and other women.

Do you contribute to body shaming in others, or feel comforted by seeing stars with imperfect bodies in magazines? “If we are honest with ourselves, it serves no purpose other than to make ourselves feel better,” Kelly says. “It does women no good to bring each other down.”

Shut down fat talk.

Once you know what this fat talk is, it’s easier to pinpoint and acknowledge as the common and destructive ritual it is. When someone starts it up, you can encourage them to not engage in these disparaging conversations or just change the subject.

Send the right message to younger women (and men).

Kelly says women should think about what message they send to children about how they feel about their bodies. If you constantly talk about needing to lose weight, it reinforces those ideas in kids’ minds. “In our household, we have a constant dialogue with our kids about body consciousness and objectification,” she says.

The Blue Angels will perform practice air shows over Pensacola Naval Air Station most Tuesday and Wednesday mornings starting in March at 11:30 am, with autograph sessions with the pilots inside the National Naval Aviation Museum on most Wednesdays. LADIES GOLF CLINIC

Eastern Shore Art Center presents Visions Through Paintings and Poetry, an exhibition by Margaret Biggs. Margaret pays homage to the beauty found in nature and the spirituality a relationship with it ensures. Often bordering between the elements of abstraction and realism, her depictions of our regional coasts have been described as both modern and surrealistic. For this solo exhibition, Margaret presents some of her latest work displaying the essence of her style and spirit revealed in its most developed form. Alongside these portrayals of our local environment, she contextualizes these forms as symbols of deeper meaning through her collection of poetry.

Pensacola’s Sister City Donates $12,888 to Support Flood Relief Efforts United Way of Escambia County is excited to announce that Pensacola’s Sister City, Gero, Japan, has donated $12,888 to support flood relief efforts. After the devastating flood impacting our community at the end of April into early May, representatives from Gero contacted the City of Pensacola seeking ways to lend a hand.

“We are incredibly grateful to our Sister City in Japan for their generosity,” said Mayor Ashton Hayward. “Residents throughout our community experienced significant losses as a result of the flood.

Though they are half a world away, our friends in Gero saw our need and stepped up in a big way. Their donation will be used to help those who need it most.” Their generous donation will be added to the nearly $180,000 United Way has already disbursed to local non-profit partners experiencing loss from the flood.

Dollars were raised online, at a May telethon/radio-thon at Cordova and Santa Rosa malls, local contributors to flood relief and United Way’s reserve funds.
