The time has come, once again, for our annual Pensacola Magazine Weddings Cover Contest. I love giving local brides the chance to be a cover girl and the beautiful brides who submit their portraits each year are clearly bursting with pride over their cherished wedding day portraits. And, rightfully so.

With so many happy and lovely brides to choose from, it’s a difficult decision and the voting is always very close.

This year was no exception, but we did settle on one fantastic image. Michelle Dearing of Oeil Photography captured local bride Loryn Smith and her adorable dogs perfectly. To me, the photo is traditionally soft and southern, but the inclusion of the beloved family dogs adds a sense of whimsy and playfulness as well. Loryn is a dog lover extraordinaire and including her furry babies in her wedding was a no brainer. We are so glad she did and that she shared this stunning and playful photo with us.

‘Tis the season of love and beads. As a Methodist living in Alabama, I did not grow up celebrating Mardi Gras though it has actually become one of my favorite “holidays.” What’s not to love about a religious celebration that lasts for weeks and involves nothing but happiness, cheap trinkets, colorful costumes, music and pure gluttony? The Catholics got it right. And if you haven’t gone to any of the Pensacola Mardi Gras parades or parties, stop what you are doing and GO. Enjoy the inexpensive jewels that are tossed from the floats because Valentine’s Day quickly follows and the ante is considerably increased. February is indeed a fabulous month.

What to do if you are diagnosed with a life changing disease that leaves you with an uncertain future at best?

Throw a celebration of life party!

And that is exactly what Fred Levin did two days before he left for more tests, treatment, and consultation. Most of us, myself included, would struggle with news of this magnitude and understandably and most likely slip into a state of despair.

Maybe Fred has faced more than a lion’s share of major challenges that have taught him to be patient and calculating, but this one has to be tough. One thing for certain, cancer clearly does not discriminate. Following his initial diagnosis, nearly

200 people were invited to his Timeless Tanglewood home for one of the best parties ever. It took organizer Phillip Morris, who is on crutches with an injury himself, a whopping 48 hours to pull the event together, a testimony to his interesting mix of friends that responded to the call to arms. Delicious food, flowing wine, opera in the drawing room, John Ripley on the piano, lively conversation—just the way to deal with the news, right? A lot of power was concentrated in that beautiful house, and the strength of the prayers freely offered on Fred’s behalf will surely help him win this fight. His daughters, Marci, Debbie, and Kimberly, were all there, as well

Mardi Gras is not the only time for celebrations, as the

annual Martin Luther King, Jr. parade drew crowds throughout downtown. City Councilman Brian Spencer rode in the procession followed by a sassy convertible with his mother, Edith Brewis (87) and motherin-law, Rose Collins (85), tossing beads and discussing plans to participate again next year. It would do us all good to review the speeches of Dr. King and remember the important message he gave regarding justice, equality and non-violence.

Keeping the theme of equality, Sunday’s Child just held another membership drive, bringing in an impressive 115 members to support the message of inclusion across the community.

Loryn and Shawn first laid eyes on each other in college during a zoology class. Since Shawn works as a private pilot, now with his own hangar in Alabama, for their first date he took Loryn flying high above Pensacola’s cityscape at night. Two years later, while they were on a sunset cruise, Loryn had a hunch that Shawn was getting ready to pop the question and—sure enough—he did. Shawn arranged for a band to announce that he had won a fake “door prize” and, once he got onto the stage, he beckoned for Loryn to join him and he wasn’t shy about asking for her hand in marriage in front of a whole crowd of spectators. The wedding took place at Pensacola Country Club, and, for their theme, Loryn went with the “less is more” approach, avoiding bright color palettes and going for simplistic shades of ivory, silver and gold. Loryn’s favorite aspect of the wedding was that her furry family (dogs Ponyboy and Millie) got dressed up and attended as part of the wedding party. Loryn and Shawn went to Italy for their honeymoon, starting off in the relaxing setting of Cinque Terre “Five Lands” and ended their trip in the romantic city of Rome. What sage advice does Loryn offer newly engaged couples? That a day-of wedding coordinator is a must.

According to Loryn, if you have a wonderful coordinator like Paul Silivos, then you won’t have to scramble to make sure everything is in place and all you have to focus on is what you should be focusing on: your soon-to-be husband.

Although Rain and Alex were seeing other people when they met during nursing school in 2009, the two had a serendipitous encounter after Rain graduated: she got a job at Gulf Breeze Hospital where Alex just so happened to be the nurse that Rain trained under. A little over two years later, Alex proposed to Rain at her family’s annual pumpkin carving contest where he surprised Alex by revealing the hidden ring inside his “late entry” pumpkin. The two were married last year on Nov. 7 at Palafox House in Downtown Pensacola. The wedding was done in a laidback style with rustic and industrial themes decorated by string lights along with center pieces, bouquets, boutonnieres and accent flowers that were all handmade by the bride and her bridesmaids the day before the wedding. The color scheme was made up of berry and gray, so the bridesmaid wore berry-colored dresses while the groomsmen suited up in gray. The couple honeymooned for a week in a Georgia cabin located in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Rain and Alex’s advice to newly engaged couples: “Remember your special day is one that celebrates you—the couple. It’s about doing what you both want. So, don’t fret if you didn’t get to say hello to everyone, or you don’t get through all the little particulars. Dance, drink, and have the time of your life. That is what people will remember—how much fun everyone had!”

Without knowing it at the time, Sara Mitchell was introduced to her (future) husband Ryan in high school when the two met through mutual friends in December of 2006; Ryan was a drummer in a band who noticed Sara at one of the shows. The high school sweethearts dated for nearly 10 years before Ryan popped the big question to Sara on July 12, 2014 at a Blue Angels air show. He knelt down on one knee just as the crowd was cheering and the Angels soared over the iconic Pensacola Beachball. Until that day, Sara had never been to a Blue Angels show and it quickly became one she would never forget. The pair were married at Hilton Pensacola Beach on Oct. 31, but it wasn’t a Halloween-themed wedding. Sara is a graphic designer by trade with a creative side she used to DIY her own wedding decorations.

Since Ryan is an auto technician and Sara is also a photographer, she spruced up old cameras and rusty auto tools before incorporating them into her wedding decor. The newlyweds were not interested in relaxing for their honeymoon in St. Lucia, instead they were on a mission for adventure; they hiked, rode street buggies, dived into hot springs, and kept the excitement going until the trip had to come to an end. So, what’s Sara’s advice to newly engaged couples? Save the date for your wedding and finalize your guest list way early in advance, so you aren’t overwhelmed by all your responsibilities as you get closer to your special day.

According to Sarah Davis, last decade’s push for glamor and glitz has died down, and the industry has regained its traditional senses. You can’t go wrong with a pair of earrings and even a right-hand ring, says Sarah.

Down the Aisle Again

Roughly 50 percent of all marriages end in divorce.

Out of the 50 percent who don’t make it, 98 percent of them get over it and eventually remarry.

My only sister finds herself transitioning into the 98 percent club. She divorced years ago and has been reluctant to make another lifetime commitment. Her job and her dog consumed most of her time, but now her long time boyfriend is about to pop the question and she plans to say yes. She called to tell me the joyful news and also expressed her confusion about what to do next. When you are older, how do you marry? What do you do? Make a dash to the justice of the peace? What are the rules for the second or even third marriage ceremony?

In my best, older sister of-course-I knowwhat-I-am-talking-about voice, I explained to her that there are no rules. It is absolutely whatever you and your beloved want it to be. It can be as formal or informal as your little heart desires.

The stigma once attached to divorce and multiple marriages went away with hoop skirts. Second or third weddings have become commonplace in the search for real and lasting love. The fourth, however, gets into a gray area, and I mean more than just hair color.

Furthermore, being older does not excuse either party from all of the corny little romantic gestures usually associated with a first marriage. Guys should put forth every bit as much effort in the proposal as they did first time around.

Actually, they probably should try a little harder, and maybe this will be the last time they go through this. Be creative and mushy and remember that a bended knee is highly desirable at any age. By all means, this is no time to forget your arthritis medication. Creaking joints and leg cramps may be inevitable, but take every possible measure to not let this become part of the proposal memory. Additionally, I have a guy friend who asked if an engagement ring is necessary for 24

a second wedding. Are you kidding me?

Usually, you are in a much better position to actually afford a ring when you are older, so forget getting off the hook on this one. The policy here is that the longer you have been together, the larger the stone needs to be. This makes her feel that it was worth the wait and you value her patience with the extended courtship period.

After the engagement has been established, you have several options: 1. Skip the formalities and elope, followed by an awesome honeymoon.

2. Have a very cool family-only ceremony, preferably on the waterfront with a lovely view of skimmers in the distance. This choice should be followed by a sit down dinner with an evening dotted with anecdotal toasts from all of your relatives who have had too much to drink.

3. Splurge on a big wedding and invite all of your friends who wondered if you would ever marry again.

What to wear? Dress selection has always been about personal preference.

Long or short? White or candlelight?

Some brides today even opt for color

in their wedding ensemble. The point is that a second wedding does not dictate the type of dress required. You do not have to put on a suit just because you have done this before. Adorn yourself in whatever makes you feel beautiful and happy. Why do you think little girls wear princess costumes? They put them on whenever they feel the urge and then behave accordingly, as if they were reigning over fawning subjects in their fairytale kingdoms. Getting older does not eliminate tiara moments, though we probably would get a few strange looks if we don the tulle skirts and glitter scepters for anything other than Mardi Gras.

Think of this new wedding as a chance to get it all right this time. Pick out the things you like best and mesh them all into this wonderful new opportunity.

The first time around we do so much to please and accommodate our families that the wedding often becomes stressful and compromising. Divorce is rarely desirable, but it does teach you about what does and does not work. Just think about how many times you have said, “If I could do it over‌â€? Well, now you can.

You may have heard that Holland Farms is “The Nuttiest Place Around” Pensacola, because of its origins as a family owned and operated peanut farm. Today, you’ll find more than peanuts at the farm: in fact, last year in October the Hollands constructed a barn called Heaven’s Trail for special occasions like wedding ceremonies and receptions. Surrounding the barn is a beautiful field of sunflowers, which makes for a great backdrop for wedding photo shoots. Tables and chairs, which can seat up to 200 guests, are provided.

The climate controlled barn is made of southern pine wood and has an elevated loft overlooking the ground floor, a loft which is perfect for preand post-wedding photos. A Match Made in Heaven: Skopelos and New World Landing As the Silivos clan will tell you, Skopelos isn’t just an island in the Aegean anymore: the family owned and operated Greek restaurant aptly named after the Greek island of Skopelos is projected to re-open its doors in its new location within the walls of New World Landing before Valentine’s Day. New World Landing and Skopelos will make for the perfect partnership: while New World is bringing its ideal downtown location, restaurant and bar space, as well as vast banquet facilities that can hold up to 700 guests, Skopelos will cater exclusively to all public and private events including weddings at New World Landing.

For those who remember Skopelos at its original location on Cervantes, you should know the restaurant has been a part of Pensacola for over half a century.

It was (and will be) a place where people can come together to enjoy dishes made using both local seafood, prime cuts and ingredients with a Mediterranean flair.

The main entrance to Skopelos will be located adjacent to the courtyard and front doors to the New World Inn. For visitors who are already familiar with New World Landing, the restaurant will encompass what was once referred to as the Pensacola and French rooms, as well as the 600 South Bar. Skopelos will be open seven days a week, so rest assured that all New World Landing food offerings will come straight out of the Skopelos kitchen. The movie Back To The Future was the main theme for the spread as a whole.

We decided to build from previous decades up to the present day bride. We wanted to showcase real women with real unique styles. The present day bride can be expected to decorate with the latest trends on Pinterest. This virtual inspiration board can be a great tool, but more often these days, we work against it. Many brides confuse what they think is pretty with what they actually desire for their wedding. We want to encourage brides to choose details and decor that expresses themselves and who they are as a couple. As wedding vendors, we see the same wedding over and over again. So we wanted to showcase a twist on the usual bridal look, and promote some of our favorite Pensacola vendors and locations.

This is how Jessi and I do weddings. Don’t be afraid to do something different, go against the grain, and highlight features about your style that are what make you, you! Make your wedding an event that is unique, custom, and an honest display and celebration of your relationship and commitment to each other. Back To The Future “We drew inspiration from the classic film, and incorporated cool, colorful lighting, in a urban setting. 5 ½ Bar is a local spot that has always inspired us, Jessi in particular. It was creative lighting fixtures, a musical vibe, and an always-killer cocktail menu. To go with the theme, we selected a dress that matched the color palette, and was the inspiration for the design we had for the cake display. Brides, always pick your dress first.
