This year, I hope to explore creative and personal endeavors that help me rediscover myself and discover new outlets for personal expression.

Last year, I moved into a new home, and I’ve been a little stuck when it comes to decorating. Many of my belongings are too big or don’t fit aesthetically in this newer, smaller house. I love the part of my job that allows me to visit other people’s homes and ask them tons of questions about their design and style choices because it gives me so many ideas for my own home. This month we feature Joey Miller and Ben Brennan’s eclectic and inspiring East Hill Home that uses colors, layers and texture to create a truly unique and personal sanctuary. From deep hues and thrifted finds to family heirlooms and gifted treasures, this East Hill bungalow and its lush landscaping will have you dreaming of summer days by the pool and cozy nights on the sofa. I hope you enjoy this sneak peek into a lovely East Hill gem.

If exotic animals are more your thing, head on over to the brand spanking new and significantly enlarged Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo. The new location features all the hands-on, up close interaction as the previous location plus added attractions, amenities and experiences that will make for a wonderful family day out.

Procrastination

On that note, I encourage you to read our COVID-19 Resource Guide, which provides resources for food, business, community and more. The ever-changing nature of this crisis necessitates that I mention that these resources may or may not be available to you by the time you read this issue. I hope it will provide a place to start, some ideas or some inspiration either way.

If you’re interested in conservation, check out Dakota Parks story on local Panhandle Rooftop Nesting Biologist, Rebekah Snyder. Through her work with Audubon Florida, Snyder helps to ensure local shorebirds have safe nesting spaces in an increasingly overpopulated region.

In keeping with our Home and Garden theme, we’ve included a handful of home related stories this month. If you love mid-century modern (MCM) furniture and design, you’ll enjoy Nicole Willis’s article on local MCM furniture dealers and designers. They offer up advice on incorporating the MCM vibe into almost any existing home decor and design. Plus, our local UF/IFAS Extension offers tips for growing the perfect Panhandle lawn, and our own Morgan Cole gives some solid advice on attracting all the beautiful birds to your backyard.

You may also notice that we have some nonpandemic related stories in this issue. We made the call to include already planned articles that might still be helpful, relevant or enjoyable for our readers. We hope you find them useful.

While many people made glorious headway on home improvement and personal projects in 2020, I did not. I did not organize anything. I did not fix anything. I did not learn a language or a new skill. Nothing. But that’s ok, too. I’m still here. That’s an accomplishment. However, in 2021, I’d like to lighten my load and empty my house of much of the clutter and unnecessary junk that fills it. It’s time to make room for something new.

All of this, plus a few DIY pet treat recipes and some good news from the Florida legislature regarding protection for pets in abusive situations.

We’ve rounded out the issue with some great March events like Pensacola Little Theatre’s annual fundraiser, Cabaret. This art and performance extravaganza is one of the best parties of the year, so be sure to get your tickets before they sell out! We also have all the info you need on the sixth annual Pensacola VegFest at Community Maritime Park. Head over on March 23 for plenty of healthy food and a family-friendly day of music, art, face painting, yoga and more.

As for us, Pensacola Magazine has been published under one title or another for more than 40 years. We have no plans on changing that. We will continue to publish and to bring you all the information we can for as long as we can. Please reach out to us with story ideas, inspiration or just a quick hello. We are all working from home and we are missing our water cooler conversations.

In this issue, we’ve covered all of these topics and more to help readers shift their own focus in 2021. We hope you enjoy. Here’s to your health!

As always, I hope you enjoy the issue,

So, turn off the news, put down your phone and enjoy these heartwarming tales and adorable of photos of local animals and the folks who care for them. When you’re done, give your kitty a little catnip and throw your dog a bone. It’s these simple pleasures that will keep us all sane.

Stay safe, stay healthy and stay strong, Pensacola!

With the arrival of spring, bait shops become very busy places filled with anxious souls ready to get on the water. I have a lot of men in my family and I also work in an office that has plenty of manly kind of men. That being said, you can only imagine the hunting and fishing stories I have endured for most of my personal and professional life. I have, however, only recently come to understand how passionate fishermen can really be, not to mention the fact that a small fortune goes into the catch, certainly justifying the price of the grouper feature at our finest restaurants. Who knew? Simple me, who grew up watching Andy Griffith take little barefoot Opie down to the lake with a cane pole and a jar of worms, had no idea of the culture surrounding man and his quest for….fish.

And who hasn’t put up with stories among guys about the “big ones” and the “one that got away?” It never occurred to me that all that chatter about cold-blooded fish referred to more than invertebrates. Even fish need warmth. Often the fish find warmer waters and never return to the chill again. There are actually fish from South Florida that would die in Northwest Florida. And trust me, if the water didn’t kill them, the politics would. But I digress. Listen as I share the truth I have learned about fish tales.

Before the adventure begins, it is critical to have the right equipment. Take one walk through Bass Pro Shop and pledge to never put up with one comment about the price of shoes again. Some fishermen throw copious amounts of money at this endeavor, buying all the newest and trendiest gear, trying to compensate for their lack of skill. On the other hand, some fishermen manage to catch more than their fair share. It is true, though, that all rods and reels were not created equally. The right catch requires that you use gear with just the right combination of strength and sensitivity. Otherwise, you might bring in the catch too easily and what fun is that? Or, you might be using something too delicate and then, consequently, the good one gets away, laughing all the while at the feeble effort. Size does indeed matter.

And then, there is the bait. You have got to know and understand the species you are seeking in order to adequately prepare. Throw the wrong bait out there, guys, and you may come home empty-handed or with something undesirable. Some varieties will settle for the usual, timehonored lures. Cast them out there and wait for the bite. On the other hand, some fish are more discriminating and require a more sophisticated approach. These types require lots of bling before they bite. The lure has to have the right movement, action and flash. Spawning creates a whole different set of issues. During this emotional time, many fish lose all sense of discrimination and may strike at anything dangled in front of them, as their appetite is the last thing on their fish brains.

Finally, consider what the great hunters do with the catch. Andy, Opie and Aunt Bee ate the catch of the day. Today’s “sportsmen” (can’t help but giggle over that one) don’t always even keep the prize. Maybe she wasn’t good enough. Toss! Maybe she was too big. Gone! Maybe she just didn’t taste good. Maybe they caught her for her beauty, only to celebrate the

catch, and then they didn’t really know what to do with her. These special ones all too often end up lifeless on the wall, a symbol of what used to be.

I have made a few feeble efforts to join in fishing excursions in order to see firsthand what all of the fuss is about. I do understand the thrill of hooking a good fish, especially one that jumps like a tarpon. The beauty of a fish like that blows my mind and, even better, he gets set free after doing his dance. As great as it is to hook a game fish, my first adventure with mahi mahi dampened my appetite for the fish and for fishing. They are so beautiful in the water with their vivid colors and the fact that they are usually in a large school. People love to catch (and eat) these fish but the boat looked like an NCIS crime scene. Who knew that all fish do not bleed the same. My fellow fishermen had no trouble with “the process” but I pretty much retired from the hunt. Not only that, but advancing years and understanding what the sun is actually doing to me have required me to alter my exposure to the elements. I am in a very comfortable zone now and have found that my perfect fishing experience now involves ordering off a seafood menu or choosing from the Joe Patti’s counter. And, I will never again complain about the price of a grouper entree.

Cabaret

A Grand Celebration of the Arts

Cabaret, Pensacola Little Theatre’s (PLT) annual celebration of art is back for another year of art-themed fun. The theme for this year’s artful celebration is “Express Yourself,” and attendees can expect to see a variety of artistic mediums and expressions seamlessly blended to showcase art as the life of the party.

This year’s Cabaret will be held on April 6 at the Clark Family Cultural Center located at 400 S. Jefferson St. in downtown Pensacola. A vibrant playhouse vibe will completely transform the theatre and surrounding blocks into an indoor and outdoor entertainment complex.

Serving as PLT’s largest fundraising event of the year, Cabaret plays a significant role in helping the theatre raise the funding needed for its annual programs and performances.

“We’ve had every theme you can imagine—decades, colors, cities, shows—but Cabaret: Express Yourself is set to be the most interactive, dramatic experience yet,” Susan Clark Waters, committee chair and presenting sponsor said. “Collaboration of the arts in Pensacola is a gift, and one unforgettable party fusing them all together helps fund an entire year of shows led by our talented volunteer artists.”

Guests can expect to experience every form of art from ballet, drag performances and aerial dancing to singing, orchestral performances and so much more.

“We’ve had every theme you can imagine—decades, colors, cities, shows— but Cabaret: Express Yourself is set to be the most interactive, dramatic experience yet.”

“This year, the theme is Cabaret: Express Yourself, which speaks to the very heart of what our nonprofit is all about: artistic expression. The Center is divided into rooms by artistic expression, leading guests through music, dance, fashion, fine art, digital media, self-expression, and every creative corner in-between. As we unveil the full interior renovations of The Clark Family Cultural Center on April 6th at Cabaret, we wanted to showcase both the building and the mission in this year’s theme,” PLT Executive Director Sid WilliamsHeath said.

The event is a labor of love for those who have found a home at PLT. “It takes a village to Cabaret,” Williams-Heath explained. “I couldn’t possibly list and thank all of the brilliant minds who make Cabaret happen – it would take the whole article! The board drives the sales; the staff leads the execution; the volunteer artists provide the talent; our creative collaborations of dancers, singers, DJs, musicians, culinary art, and so much more absolutely make the party. The core Cabaret committee is full of the most talented souls I’ve ever met, which includes my unparalleled theatre staff. But what I’ve found most is that the theme drives the involvement, and if there isn’t buy-in from that core group, the celebration just won’t work.”

Profits from this annual fundraiser allow PLT to continue to deliver diverse theatrical experiences to children and adults through performances, volunteer opportunities and educational outreach programs in our community. “So, at Cabaret, we put the art front and center to showcase the purpose and the passion behind the party so you can get a glimpse into what you’re funding. Anyone in the community can perform with us –free of charge – and our goal is to provide access to arts and arts education to Pensacola, whether that’s on the performance side or the patron experience,” WilliamsHeath said.

Tickets for this black tie event are set at $150 per person and include access to the entire event. For tickets and event details, visit pensacolalittletheatre.com/cabaret.

Beth was suffering from Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN). While chemotherapy kills cancer cells it also causes a lot of other damage throughout the body. 30-40% of cancer patients treated with chemotherapy result in peripheral neuropathy.

"Standing all day was not just a challenge, it caused me physical agony. Keeping up with my busy scheduleforget about it. I couldn't even go for walks on the beach." Beth, like so many others, was prescribed Gabapentin to help with the pain and told there was nothing anyone could do - in their words 'there is no treatment for neuropathy.'

Then Beth found Dr Rebecca Gibbons of Acupuncture & Wellness of Pensacola. By blending the time-tested science of acupuncture with more modern, medical technology, Dr. Gibbons has designed a real solution for peripheral neuropathy.

Acupuncture is incredible at restoring blood flow and stimulating damaged nerves, preventing them from dying off,” tells Dr. Gibbons.

“We take our treatments a step further by integrating ATP Resonance BioTherapy™ which targets specific nerves in the body using microcurrent. ATP therapy is like watering a plant. This treatment will stimulate the blood vessels to grow back around the peripheral nerves and provide them with the proper nutrients to heal and repair.”

After only four weeks of treatment Beth is already seeing incredible improvement. "I've taken the handicap placard off my rearview mirror and I'm finally back to walking on the beach. I can't wait to see how I feel at the end of my program! I used to think that this pain was just the price I have to pay for getting older. Dr. Gibbons has really given me hope for a better life!"

The number of treatments needed to allow the nerves to fully recover will vary from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and vascular evaluation.

Dr. Gibbons specializes in treating chronic pain, complicated neurological conditions and digestive issues. If you or someone you love is suffering from chronic pain or neuropathy, call 850-530-1028 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Gibbons at Acupuncture & Wellness of Pensacola.

Pensacola VegFest

Vegan Food, Fun & Activities

Pensacola’s VegFest is back for its sixth annual celebration of all things vegan with a family-friendly day of music, art, face painting, yoga, jewelry making and, of course, food!

Held at the Community Maritime Park in downtown Pensacola on March 23, this year’s Vegfest will feature more than 50 registered vendors for attendees to enjoy.

First debuting in Pensacola in 2018, VegFest began when Whitney MacLeod, Pensacola VegFest President, and a small group of local vegans wanted to spread their philosophy on veganism as well as its health and environmental benefits to the community through an interactive event that combined live cooking demonstrations with education.

VegFest has grown to become one of the most popular spring events in the city, drawing more than 5,000 attendees each year. Since its inception, the event has evolved to include a number of local and regional vendors, with last year’s event attracting 6,000 attendees.

This annual family-friendly event is a celebration of compassionate living featuring fun activities for everyone to enjoy. Attendees will enjoy plant-based cruelty-free foods, eco-friendly vendors and vegan artists. This year’s event will also include live music, free yoga sessions, cooking demonstrations and more.

MacLeod states that the festival will host a wide range of vendors this year, from Brazilian vegan cuisine and vegan seafood to vegan ice cream and desserts. One returning favorite is Turtle Roll Ice Cream, who first participated in the event in 2023.

Turtle Roll Ice Cream owner Charlene Cook began participating in the event as a way to promote and expand their sorbet-only vegan options. After experimenting with some different recipes, Charlene was able to perfect her tasty vegan sorbet, which was a huge hit at last year’s event.

“[I am] most looking forward to seeing people return who discovered us last year. I can’t wait to see their inner child come out when they discover our vegan ice creams, sundaes, banana splits and milkshakes,” Cook said.

Join in the food, fun and festivities at the 6th Annual Pensacola Vegfest on March 23 from 11 am to 6 pm at the Community Maritime Park located at 301 W. Main St. in downtown Pensacola.

General admission tickets are on sale for $5 each and can be purchased online at pensacolavegfest.com.

“Last year’s event sold out within just a few days of launching the tickets, so we have expanded our available VIV tickets for this year,” MacLeod explained.

VIV (Very Important Vegan) tickets are also available for $30 each, which include free parking, exciting VegFest swag, a tote bag, assorted vegan goodies from event sponsors and exclusive VIV ticket-holder merchandise.

For tickets and complete event details, visit pensacolavegfest.com or @PensacolaVegFest on Instagram and Facebook.

Tips for a Lavishly-Lush Lawn

he lawn is an icon of the American home. As a multi-use area, it must be covered with a tough ground-cover plant capable of standing up to children playing and trampling your neighbors at routine grill outs, yet still beautiful enough to present your home to passers-by. Maintenance of such a space has undoubtedly been frustrating in the face of the misinformation circulating on the internet, not to mention conflicting practices extolled by your neighbors. Believe it or not, it’s not as difficult as you think, though, there are a few areas where you should focus your attention and apply a few scientifically proven principles. To achieve a luscious green lawn, you will need to focus your attention on three crucial elements—irrigation, fertilization and mowing. Optimizing these three practices will lead to a stress-free and healthy lawn.

Know your turfgrass

Before you do anything else, it is important to know what species you are working with. The most common turfgrass in the Panhandle is centipedegrass, with zoysiagrass and St. Augustine being close contenders. Bermudagrass and Bahia are also present, but the former has largely moved out of lawns in favor of athletic fields, and the latter is largely used in open unmanicured spaces. To identify your grass species, pay attention to some general characteristics and the conditions in which they grow. For instance, centipedegrass thrives in a low pH, has a yellowish hue, coarse textured blades and spreads via runners. This won’t lead you to the cultivar, but will let you know the species and thus drive your maintenance regimen. If you don’t have grass and are looking for what type of sod you’d like to install, knowing these characteristics and your conditions will help ease the choice. Test your soil’s pH before you do anything else. Different grasses thrive

at specific pH levels, and choosing the right species is considerably easier than adjusting the pH level of your soil. Another consideration is the light level. Some zoysia and St. Augustine cultivars perform well in the shade, while others and all centipedegrasses will struggle in shady environments. Choose the best species for your yard, while understanding that some may be better suited to shade gardens than lawn space.

Irrigation

Irrigation is the most important aspect of lawn care. Improper watering will cause your grass to die back, opening bare spots for weeds and insects to infiltrate. This can create a whirlwind of tasks that drive the “high maintenance” reputation of grasses in Florida. Irrigation is best performed based on the needs of the lawn, not as a schedule. To determine when you should irrigate, look for indicators such as folding blades, color change and lingering footprints. When you see these, apply 1/2 to 3/4 inches of

water in the predawn hours. Keeping your soil texture in mind, sandy soils may need more water to saturate the area, while clay may need to soak in through multiple applications. The important thing is to get the water into your root zone. Watering only when required will encourage deeper rooting of your grasses and help them thrive in drought conditions.

So, how do you know how long to run your system? Calibrate by evenly distributing straight-sided cans in your watering zones. Tuna cans are excellent for this purpose. Run the system for 15 minutes and then, adjust your times as necessary. While you are calibrating the system, check the sprinkler coverage. Adjust any errant heads to evenly distribute to all turf areas and away from driveways and roads. No matter how much irrigation these areas get, they will not grow grass. Lastly, install a rain sensor. The Panhandle receives about 68 inches of rain per year,*so there is no need to run your water system if Mother Nature is taking care of the irrigation for you.

PENSACOLA MAGAZINE | 23
Coordinator, Extension, Santa Rosa County

Fertilizing

Fertilization is often another misunderstood topic, and the second easiest way to harm grass. Grasses are plants and, therefore, require nutrients to thrive. You can only determine how much through soil testing, which should be performed at least every three years. Over fertilizing, just like overwatering, will cause your grass to die back. Application rates are species-specific and given in terms of required nitrogen per 1000 square feet across the growing season. To meet these requirements, make multiple applications while roots are actively growing between April 15 and September 15.

Nitrogen is identified in fertilizer by the first of the three-digit NPK rating required on fertilizer labels. It indicates the amount as a percentage of the weight of the bag that is nitrogen. There is no optimal rate (i.e., 6-6-6, 8-8-8); instead, choose the bag that provides the amount of fertilizer needed for your application system to apply the appropriate amount of nitrogen. Additionally, ensure 70 percent of this nitrogen is slowly released, providing small “sips” to your lawn.

Mowing

The final aspect of lawn care that is often overlooked is mowing height. Turfgrasses, as with any other plant, need to photosynthesize. Mowing too short will not provide enough blade for it to do so efficiently, and mowing too high can cause grasses to try and shade themselves. Either way, incorrect mowing will cause stress to the plant, which will create management issues down the road.

When you mow, you should leave clippings on the lawn, assuming they are not excessive. Excessive clippings would mean they can be seen roughly resembling windrowed hay. The clippings help to add organic matter and return some of the nutrients to your lawn.

Weeds

No article on lawn care would be complete without mentioning weed control. This topic could be, and has been, the subject of many articles. For our purposes, I’ll only touch on weed prevention. The absolute best way to prevent weeds in your lawn is to keep your turfgrass stress-free and lush. That is done by paying attention to your irrigation, fertilization and mowing practices. That said, these efforts may be bolstered with pre-emergent herbicides, which are applied in mid-February, mid-April and again in October. Pre-emergent herbicides help to prevent weed seeds from germinating in the first place, thus keeping them from becoming an issue in your lawn. They require two applications in spring, as the seeds germinating this time of year are keyed by soil temperature (February application) and day length (April application). The same is not true in autumn; thus, only one application is necessary. Some care needs to be taken with these herbicides as they cannot decipher weed seeds from those you wish to germinate. Make sure anything you are wanting to germinate

is not planted in the ground when applying the pre-emergent herbicides, or use transplants in those areas. As with all herbicides, follow the label on your chosen product to avoid affecting any off-target plants.

Turfgrasses are a lot easier to maintain than their reputation would imply. Appropriate irrigation, fertilization and mowing will provide lush, healthy growth. Keeping grasses stress-free will reduce weed infiltration and help to replenish local watersheds. Take the time to familiarize yourself with your grass and institute a maintenance regimen appropriate for it to thrive.

The UF/IFAS Extension is here to help with your lawn care and maintenance needs both online and in-person. For more specific information on lawn care, visit hort.ifas.ufl.edu/yourfloridalawn/. If You Feed Them, They Will Come

Birds are everywhere. They’re tucked away in the shrubs outside of our homes and apartments, they are bobbing around our backyards and they are foraging at local parks. No matter where you live, birds are nearby, just waiting to be noticed. Once you do, you might find it hard to stop. That’s because birding—the act of appreciating and observing birds—provides a new perspective on the natural world.

According to the Francis M. Weston Audubon Society (FMWAS), a local chapter of the National Audubon Society and Audubon Florida, the most common species of backyard birds in Northwest Florida are the northern mockingbird (the state bird of Florida), northern cardinal, Carolina wren, morning dove, eastern bluebird, tufted titmouse, Carolina chickadee, blue jay, red-bellied woodpecker and ruby-throated hummingbird.

Backyard birding is a great way to observe numerous local species from the comfort of your own home. You’ll be amazed at the variety of birds you’ll see throughout the year. From native plantings and trees to provide safe stopover areas for them to eat, drink and nest, there are a number of ways to attract more feathered friends to your yard or garden.

Native Plants and Trees

According to University of Florida (UF) Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Professor Mark Hostetler, how you landscape and maintain your yard can make a difference for both bird conservation and the environment. In most cases, native plants are best-suited to provide food for birds and require little maintenance.

One of the most effective ways to attract birds to your backyard is to use native plantings to provide the natural habitats that have supported them for thousands of years. FMWAS Field

Trip Chairman Lucy Duncan, says that the most fool-proof menu you can offer migratory and native birds are Florida’s native plants and the insects that feed on them. These food sources provide the right nutrients at the right time, supporting birds through all seasons of the year and all parts of their lifecycle.

“Native species of trees and plants attract the most birds because those plants evolved along with the insects on which birds thrive. For example, oak trees support 534 species of caterpillars whereas non-native trees will support only a few by comparison. There are at least 16 species of native trees that supply upwards of 125 species of caterpillars that are eaten by birds. Natives also support natural food webs that have many benefits of ecological services,” Duncan explained.

Planting species that bear seeds and fruits will also attract an abundance of birds. Any native plant (in the right place) can provide shelter for birds and food for insects, too. Many birds feed on the berries of native wildflowers and plants such as Simpson’s stopper, berry-producing hollies, American beautyberry, red mulberry and more.

To keep hummingbirds happy, incorporate nectar-producing plants like coral honeysuckle, firebush and scarlet salvia into your garden. Native fruit-bearing plants, such as Chickasaw plum, passion flower, pawpaw, wax myrtle, native persimmon and seagrape are also excellent food sources for birds.

Last but not least, brush piles and snags in your yard provide shelter to insects, making them a source of bird food and shelter for brush and cavity-nesters. Brush piles are magnets for small bird species, like Carolina wrens.

Feeder Selection

One of the earliest written accounts of bird feeding in the United States dates back to 1845, when Henry David Thoreau reported feeding birds at Walden Pond. According to the University of Florida’s Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Department, the first commerciallymade bird feeder was designed for hummingbirds and was introduced to the market in 1926. Today, more than 50 million Americans put out a billion pounds of bird food each year.

Bird feeders provide a great way to observe both migratory and local birds at close range. Before placing bird feeders in your backyard, consider the bird species you would like to attract. This is because different birds are attracted to different types of bird feeders and foods.

“Some feeders are non-selective and utilized by a range of bird species, while others are more selective, attracting only one or two specific species. If you are interested in attracting a diverse selection of birds to your yard, consider installing at least two different types of feeders,” Hotstetler explained.

Food Types

The type of food you stock in your feeder also determines which birds you will attract. Some birds prefer seeds, fruit or insects and a small number like nectar. You can find a variety of pre-mixed bird seeds for your feeder in the stores, which vary in content, cost and quality.

When seed mixes are used, birds will empty your feeder quickly, eating only the seeds they like and scattering the rest on the ground. Hostetler recommends using a single type of seed, or creating your own seed mix.

Black-oil sunflower is the preferred seed of many birds and generally serves as the best all-around attractant.

The most common types of feeders used to attract a variety of backyard bird species include:

Tube feeders— This type of hanging feeder is a hollow cylinder, usually made of clear plastic or glass so that the seed is clearly visible, with multiple feeding ports and perches. Tube feeders can be filled with a variety of different seeds. Tube feeders with perches and feeding ports are often preferable because they are less easily damaged by squirrels.

Hopper feeders—These large feeders, as with tube feeders, are primarily used to provide seed. Hopper feeders come in a variety of whimsical designs, but the most common resembles a small barn with clear plastic sides positioned in a V shape. Hopper feeders typically hold more seed than other feeders and require filling less often. Hopper feeders attract all the same species as tube feeders, along with larger birds like blue jays, cardinals, grosbeaks and woodpeckers.

Suet feeders—Woodpeckers, bluebirds, cardinals, chickadees, jays, titmice and wrens are all regular visitors to this type of feeder, which is usually a simple wire cage sized to hold a suet cake. The birds that visit the feeder cling to the wires and peck at the suet inside. Look out for bottom suet feeders that are specially made for clinging birds like

Hostetler recommends selecting specific types of foods to attract a variety of native birds to your feeder including, safflower, millet, cracked corn, nigher or thistle, milo and wheat, oats, suet, peanuts and sugar water.

There are a range of other foods you can also try in your feeder to attract specific species. For example, bluebirds and orioles love mealworms. These birds, along with house finches and woodpeckers, also love fruits such as apples, oranges, peaches, berries and bananas. Get creative, try using a variety of these different foods in your feeder to see what birds it brings to your yard.

woodpeckers and nuthatches that can hang upside down and feed.

Platform feeders— These tray feeders consist of a flat, raised surface on which seeds, fruits and other foods are spread. Some also have roofs, which help to keep the seeds dry. Platform feeders placed close to the ground can be used to attract a slightly different bird audience that includes ground feeding doves, juncos, blackbirds, towhees and sparrows. Platform feeders located higher above the ground attract many of the same birds as the tube and hopper feeders.

Nectar feeders— Nectar feeders are primarily used by hummingbirds. They are designed to mimic the flowers from which these birds get their nectar and are usually filled with sugar water. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but most feature plenty of red, since this is a very attractive color to the tiny birds. Orioles, cardinals and woodpeckers will also use nectar feeders with larger feeding ports.

Fruit feeders—These hanging feeders come in a mix of styles. All are designed to hold large fruit pieces consumed by bluebirds, orioles, house finches, woodpeckers and a range of other species.

Feeder Location

Once you have selected a feeder, you will need to determine a location for it in your yard. When scouting for a location for your feeder, there are a number of things you will need to consider. Firstly, you will want to make sure you have a good view of the feeder from where you intend to watch visiting birds.

You should also think about the different birds that will visit the feeders and their feeding styles. Some birds feed on the ground and others at shrub and tree height. To minimize crowding and attract the greatest diversity of species, provide low platform feeders for ground feeding birds, and hopper, tube, suet and raised platform feeders at different heights for shrub and treetop feeders.

Most birds that use feeders, prefer to have shrubs and trees nearby where they can perch or escape from aerial predators such as hawks. However, placing your feeders among or too close to shrubs and trees puts feathered visitors at increased risk from ground predators, particularly domestic cats. Duncan recommends placing feeders 10 to 15 feet from bushes to provide perching spots and a place to escape from aerial predators.

If you have the space, consider placing several feeding stations throughout your yard. This is effective for two reasons. First, some birds like to feed near vegetation and others, out in the open. By placing a number of feeders in different places, you will draw a greater diversity of birds. Secondly, it will prevent overly aggressive individuals from chasing off other birds who are attempting to control access to feeders.

Cleaning

The ability to keep feeders safe and clean is much more important than the style of feeder. It is crucial to maintain a clean bird feeding environment to discourage disease. Feeders should be cleaned at least once every two to three weeks to ensure they do not accumulate moldy and decomposing seeds, bird droppings or other contaminants that can make birds sick. The heat and humidity of Florida provide perfect conditions for mold growth, so during periods of warm or wet weather, it may be necessary to clean them more frequently.

“Although birds are quite adaptable to different types of feeders, the main thing to remember is to keep your feeders clean,” Duncan explained. “To clean glass, ceramic and plastic bird feeders (except hummingbird feeders), a 10 percent bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts hot water) should adequately kill any bacteria and help prevent the spread of disease.”

Duncan recommends using hot, soapy water and a bristled brush to clean wooden feeders, in order to prevent residual contaminants from seeping into the porous wood. For hummingbird feeders, use hot water and a bottle brush.

Just remember to be patient when you first install your feeders, as it might take some time for birds to find the new food source and start using them. If no birds visit your feeder within one to two weeks of setting it up, Hostetler recommends sprinkling some seeds on the ground in your yard to help them find it. If the birds still do not come, it may be that they are uncomfortable with the feeder location. Try moving your feeder to a new location to see if this helps.

Mid-Century Madness

Incorporating Mid-Century Modern Design Into Your Space

Emerging from the middle of the 20th century, the mid-century modern (MCM) aesthetic combines the character and quality of fine craftsmanship with the functionality of modern design, creating pieces that are beautiful, functional and timeless. Characteristics of MCM furniture include prominent lines and curves, deep woods, bold colors and a nice balance of manmade and natural materials.

While MCM home decor has never gone out of style, it is certainly having its moment in the spotlight. With sustainability becoming increasingly important in home design and the rising popularity of vintage style, MCM-style pieces are a no-brainer for those looking to elevate up their homes by incorporating unique and goodfor-the-planet pieces.

With all the benefits of MCM decor, it’s no wonder celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen DeGeneres and Zooey Deschanel have all incorporated this timeless style into their homes. Thankfully, you don’t have to go far to find stellar MCM pieces to bring into your home, too. Pensacola holds a treasure trove of unique vintage and vintage-inspired finds, as well as beautifully restored furniture pieces. 850 Retro is a mid-century modern furniture business run by Mark Lannigan. Lannigan became very interested in MCM style about 6 years ago, after purchasing a 1960s home. He began looking for pieces to add to the vintage flair of his home and became a big fan of MCM furnishings.

Today, Lannigan finds, refurbishes and sells MCM furniture through his business, 850 Retro. From bedroom furniture and credenzas to dining sets, Lannigan carries all things vintage or vintage-inspired. “Most of the pieces I pick up are vintage, although once in a while I will pick up a reproduction if it’s a great piece,” he said. “Sometimes I come across stuff that looks like it just came out of the showroom, but for the most part I have to restore most of what I come across.”

Lannigan explained that the style’s simplicity and timelessness lends itself to why MCM furniture is so popular today. “Trends come and go. Some designs are timeless. I think that there are many designs from the mid-century era that are just as popular today as they were back then, and will continue to be well into the future,” he explained. “I think the draw comes from the clean lines and simple, timeless designs. You can take a mid-century piece and incorporate it with various other styles and it works.”

Lannigan posts available pieces on the 850 Retro Instagram page. Direct message the account if you are interested in viewing or purchasing a piece.

“It’s easy to get overwhelmed with all the great designs. Take your time and wait until you find the pieces that speak to you. Don’t be too matchymatchy, mix it up a little and add in some bold colors.”

Supertouch Vintage is a curated MCM shop founded by Zachary Keaton. In 2019, Keaton first got started with his business by restoring MCM furniture out of his garage. As his work became more popular and Supertouch Vintage took off, Keaton moved his furniture restoration business to a private showroom located at 3960 W. Navy Blvd. in Pensacola.

Since opening his brick-and-mortar showroom, Keaton has been scouring the South looking for unique vintage MCM pieces. Whether they need a good cleaning up or a lot of restoration, he sees the potential in every piece he picks up. Proper restorative work is one of the most important and valuable aspects of Keaton’s business model. “All the pieces that I sell are true vintage and are never reproductions. Most of the time they are restored to their former glory if needed using the same process as the factories they came out of originally,” Keaton explained.

Keaton restores and sells a variety of different types of furniture pieces for any type of home. Casegoods such as dressers, nightstands, buffets and credenzas tend to be some of the most sought-after pieces at Supertouch Vintage. According to Keaton, MCM furniture and home decor remain a popular choice for so many because of the style's incredible versatility and timeless value.

“In my opinion, the clean lines can work with almost any style of home. There’s a reason why the designs of the 50s and 60s are still relevant today—they’re timeless,” he said. “When you buy a vintage piece of furniture, it’s an investment. It’s valuable today and it’ll be valuable in another 60 years.”

Keaton regularly posts pieces that are available for purchase on the Supertouch Vintage Instagram page. Available pieces can be viewed by appointment only.

“Take your time finding the right pieces that speak to you; don’t overthink it. It’s just furniture, but after a long day, it is a lot better to come home to a home you enjoy being in.”
“If you

are really aiming to accentuate a mid-century feel, consider your fabric selections, too. There are so many fun nubby, textural fabrics that really help translate the MCM feel. Go bold with a fun art chair or some ottomans which will help layer in that collected vibe.”

In Detail provides high-quality furniture pieces and interior design services for just about any home decor style, MCM included. If you are interested in executing a cohesive MCM style throughout your whole home, or just don’t have the time to furnish a room on your own, In Detail offers a variety of interior designing services for every type of home.

Founded more than 20 years ago, In Detail is operated by Cheryl Kees Clendenon and her talented team of designers and directors. Clendenon sought to fill a gap in the local market for eclectic and colorful furnishings, so she opened her own showroom, which is located in downtown Pensacola. In Detail sells a variety of vintage, vintage-inspired and modern pieces sourced from all over the world. The showroom focuses on combining different durable vintage materials that were made to last with new, modern upholstery for comfort and a clean look.

Clendenon says that MCM furniture remains a popular choice in home decor because “It is less fussy than other periods and the MCM style can still be very warm and inviting. This strikes a balance for many people who want to have a classically modern environment—plus the aesthetics are appealing to many. But often many people simply like infusing their homes with just a bit of MCM style, and that is ok too—there are no rules anyone needs to follow.”

In Detail’s retail showroom is open to the public and is located at 1514 N 9th Ave. in Pensacola. For more information about their services, visit the In Detail website.

Sophisticated Sanctuary

When Joey Miller and Ben Brennan first saw their 1932 bungalow in East Hill, they knew they had found a diamond in the rough. Initially drawn to the popular historic neighborhood and the English Tudor/Essex-style architecture, they soon found other reasons to love the property.

“When you buy an old house, you're buying everyone's modifications before it—all the good and all the bad. This one was like a time capsule. There were no add-ons or anything,” Miller said. “In the 70s they added air-conditioning, updated some of the electrical and bricked-in the porch. That was it. It was very much original. The windows were original. The trim was original. The floors were original. I don't think the walls had been painted in decades. So, that's what attracted us—because then you're starting with a clean slate from 1932—the closest you can get to the original.”

While they loved all the original features of the home, they knew they would have to update most of it to fit modern living standards. In roughly six months’ time, they replaced all major systems including the roof, electrical, plumbing and windows. They also gutted and rebuilt both bathrooms and the kitchen. They were, however, able to restore all the original plaster in the rest of the home. In addition, all the trim, doors and crystal doorknobs are original to the home. They even found the original skeleton keys for all the doors.

Miller and Brennan describe their design aesthetic as “traditional academia with a twist.” The deep, bold wall colors combine with curated collections of antiques, family heirlooms and the occasional TJ Maxx score, to create a home that is eclectic, masculine and elegant all at once.

A deep blue accent wall (Nocturne Blue by Behr) brings the focus to the brick fireplace and mantle where thrifted globe lamps combine with a vintage family clock, a gifted bonsai and yard sale pottery to create an eclectic and personalized display. The brass statue on the mantle was in the home when they purchased it, and she now holds a place of honor. The dragon lamp, another thrift store find, adds a pop of deep maroon color and touch of Asian inspiration. The leather sofa and brass fireplace elements create a masculine feel, while the floral pillows, large fiddle-leaf fig and seasonal flowers bring in a soft touch of nature.

We like things warm and cozy, but we also like to change things up. We change the pillows and curtains every season. We are also known as the holiday house. We do a full Nightmare Before Christmas Halloween display and we put up about 40,000 Christmas lights outside and we decorate seven trees inside the house.”

Upon entry, visitors are met by an excellent example of curated maximalism. A goldfronted entry table is flanked by a vintage crane and magnolia print. The table holds an interesting assortment of thrifted objects, family heirlooms and gifts. The crystal lamp came from the estate sale of a home in Old East Hill, the golden birds belonged to Miller's grandmother and the Turkish lamp was a gift from friends. Academic books as well as pottery and dried flowers combine to create a layered vignette. To the left of the door is a beautiful, freestanding antique cuckoo clock that once belonged to Brennan's mother.

The Gothic arches leading to the dining area were a big selling point. The rich, deep blue walls and crystal chandelier create an elegant yet cozy atmosphere. Framed art by local artist Leslie Ward adds a contemporary touch while the original pipe doorbell keeps the home’s history alive. The eclectic sidebar offers another example of expert layering. Colors, textures and time periods combine to create a bold exhibition that fuses antique sophistication with personal artifacts and whimsical statement pieces. The large gold iguana adds a playful touch and plays a fanciful role in family dinners.

When Miller and Brennan renovated the original galley kitchen, they found a nice surprise—a small nook with a raised ceiling. They converted the space into a quaint breakfast nook and added a long, hanging lantern to accentuate the heightened space. The clean, modern kitchen features custom cabinets and all new stainless-steel appliances. A Smeg cappuccino machine adds a retro flare and makes perfect use of the corner counter space.

I like it to be warm. Colors look better in a room of color, and color doesn't make a room look small to me—as long as you know how to layer."

The home office occupies the third bedroom space. They added double French doors to help open the space to the living area, while still being able to close it off for privacy. The Cherry Cola (Behr) walls, leather sofa and vintage green velvet chair recall the smoking room of an English country home. The canvas landscapes from Miller’s grandmother add to the English country vibe, while the large-scale art above the sofa adds a punch of modern color. The gold framed sketches feature many Pensacola landmarks and were found in the home, which was previously owned by a local architect.

The second story primary bedroom uses understated tones and personal touches to create a truly welcoming vibe. The bedroom is tucked beneath the angled roof, creating an intimate and cozy hideaway. The deep green (Step Stool Green by Magnolia Collection) primary bath has been completely renovated with high-end tile, a glasswalled, walk-in shower and a private water closet. The water closet is decorated with paintings and artwork purchased from vintage shops on each of their vacations.

The walk-in primary closet is a dream come true for old house lovers. The room was originally a small drawing room that they converted into a stunningly beautiful and organized space. The black walls and gray custom cabinets create a masculine feel, while the floral curtains and gold pedestal table work to maintain the softness of an intimate space.

We collect photos from vintage stores that relate to that place we've been to, and then we write the dates, who was there and why we went. We found a bear picture in an antique mall in Gatlinburg because we saw a bear at our Airbnb.”

Set on a large corner lot, the property was essentially a blank slate in terms of landscaping. “There wasn’t a bush on the property,” Miller said. “The yard was my stress relief during COVID.”

Much like the interior of the home, Miller and Brennan's garden philosophy incorporates textures, colors and variety. “We incorporate as many plants as possible,” Miller said. “Especially anything with big leaves.” The yard is bursting with a riotous variety of plants including bamboo, yuccas, weeping mulberry, fire spikes, loquats, chocolate mimosa, crape myrtles, bamboo, pagoda plants, hydrangeas, lilies of the Nile, elephant ears, banana trees and staghorn ferns.

“I also love a lot of perennials. Daylilies and amaryllis are my favorite,” Miller said. “If you come here during the spring, I probably have about 70 bulbs of amaryllis that have traveled with me from house to house.”

Vintage statues and decor bring depth to the garden and a tranquil koi pond creates a calm and meditative space. Miller and Brennan added the gunite pool with ocean blue pebble sheen finish and fire rock surround pavers. The garden and pool space work together to create a spa-like sanctuary that feels surprisingly private. They did such an excellent job landscaping the yard that they were chosen to participate in the Pensacola Federation of Garden Club's annual Secret Garden Tour where more than 800 people toured their lovely yard.

It's all here!

Nakeem’s Revolutionary Wish

In many ways, Nakeem is very much a modern-day teenager. He loves Marvel movies, eating sushi and pizza, playing video games, and he has even earned a first-degree black belt in Mixed Martial Arts.

Although he’s living in the twenty-first century, his heart lies much farther in the past. In addition to riding his bike and swimming at the beach, Nakeem is a total history buff!

Stories of wars and other fascinating events keep him spellbound, but despite all of his reading, something was still missing. “All I wanted to do was experience the battlefield,” Nakeem said. “And drumming, drumming was the most important thing.”

It was this type of curiosity that grew into a full-fledged wish: to participate in a Revolutionary War reenactment!

Soldier’s Heart

For kids like Nakeem, daily life can feel a lot like being on a battlefield. In 2013, at seven years old, he woke up unable to hear. What followed was a whirlwind of doctors appointments to get to the bottom of his hearing loss.

Two years later, Nakeem found out he had Stage 2 sarcoidosis.

Sarcoidosis is a multi-system inflammatory disease, characterized by small growths known as granulomas. When these granulomas grow around the auditory vestibular nerve, the results can be severe. In Nakeem’s case, this results in difficulty breathing and regulating his body temperature as well as sudden bilateral hearing loss.

The day started with a drumming lesson, as this was a crucial piece of the puzzle for Nakeem’s wish. Historically, military drummers helped soldiers march in step and also used drum beats to communicate orders between the officers and their troops.

Outfitted with a historical military costume, Nakeem definitely looked the part, and the sound of the drums, cannons and muskets made it feel like he had stepped back in time. “It made me feel like I really am a real soldier now,” he said.

Although the “British troops” put up a good fight, the American Patriots ended up winning a decisive victory, all thanks to Nakeem! He was formally enlisted in the 1st Virginia Regiment and received a commemorative coin to mark the occasion.

Nakeem eventually received a cochlear implant to help him communicate, but dealing with the symptoms of sarcoidosis was a tough battle. However, they were no match for Nakeem! This warrior was ready to step onto the battlefield to show everyone what a real soldier looks like.

Nakeem’s Wish Experience

On April 25, 2022, Nakeem was greeted by the Sons of the American Revolution, who presented him with an official certificate and medal. Later that night, he and his family were on a plane to Virginia!

His trip started out in Colonial Williamsburg, where Nakeem was immersed in history. Surrounded by Revolutionary War-era clothes and buildings, the family felt like they had stepped back in time. His tour included the Governor’s Palace, the George Wythe House, courthouse, taverns and more.

Nakeem’s journey continued with visits to many other historical sites in the area, such as Jamestown, Yorktown and George Washington’s private home, Mt. Vernon. It was this last location that Nakeem would finally get to experience his wish.

“I was exhausted after that, but [...] I wanted to go back onto the field again, Nakeem said."

Our Nation’s Hero

When asked about his desire to reenact a Revolutionary War battle, Nakeem talked about his admiration for George Washington. His decisive leadership during the war and subsequent election to the presidency made him America’s first hero. However, in our eyes, it’s Nakeem that’s the hero.

According to his mom, Natasha, Nakeem was very shy before his wish experience and didn’t spend a lot of time with his friends. But now, he’s a celebrity in the War Reenactment world!

His spirit and bravery is obvious to everyone who meets him, and he’s even been invited to take part in other war reenactments. After receiving his wish, Nakeem has found a new sense of confidence in himself that he is ready to share with the world.

For Nakeem and other critically ill children, a wish is more than a fun trip or a photo opportunity, it’s a way of making their world—and their hearts—a bit brighter.

For our wish kids, feeling hopeful about the future is just as important as successful medical treatment. In fact, many of these heroic kids list their wish experience as the turning point in their recovery.

If you’re looking for a way to give back to the children in your community who need it most, please consider donating or volunteering to Make-A-Wish Central and Northern Florida. Your support is crucial in changing the lives of critically ill children.

PenArts Presents Decision Height March

In WWII, over 1,100 Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) flew wingtip to wingtip with their male counterparts. Their contribution to the USA will be shared as PenArts presents Decision Height—a play that tells the story of six volunteers in the WASP Program. They trained male pilots; tested aircrafts; ferried aircrafts and ammunition; and towed targets for live artillery practice. By taking over these duties, they freed over 900 male pilots for combat duty in the war. Despite their contribution during WWII, it wasn’t until 1977 that the surviving women were granted Veteran status and in 2009, they were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. At each performance, PenArts will honor all current Women in the Military and Women Veterans in the audience during Women's History Month. Decision Height will be performed at The Gordon, located at 306 N. DeVilliers St. in downtown Pensacola. For showtimes, tickets and more information, visit penarts.org.

Public Restrooms Coming to Three Pensacola Parks This Spring

Pensacola is finally looking to bring public bathroom options downtown with a modular public toilet design called The Portland Loo.

In January, Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves announced that the city will be installing three modular public restrooms at Pensacola parks this spring.

Reeves said the long-awaited public restrooms shipped to the city on February 21, and the city plans to install them as soon as they arrive.

The trio of semi-permanent facilities were designed for the city of Portland, Oregon, with graffiti-proof walls and open

grating to provide restrooms for the public without the crime and other problems of regular public restrooms.

The stand-alone restrooms feature an open-air design with a grating along the top and bottom that allows law enforcement to tell how many people are inside, while still providing privacy to the user.

The stainless steel walls in each unit are protected by an anti-graffiti clear coat and can easily be cleaned with a cleaning hose and janitorial supplies, which are stored in a locked mechanical closet on the unit itself.

Unlike porta-potties, the units will be installed on a permanent concrete pad and are connected to public sewage with fully functional toilets. Each unit also comes equipped with a handwashing station on the exterior wall.

Reeves said if shipping times are reasonable and everything goes smoothly with the installation, the first Portland Loo could be open by the end of March.

The Portland Loo in MLK Plaza will be controlled by the Downtown Improvement Board under a funding agreement with the city where the Downtown Improvement Board (DIB) is paying for half of the installation cost.

PENSACOLA MAGAZINE | 57

“Our plan right now is to put one at MLK Plaza,” Reeves explained. “As we discussed with DIB. Before my administration, there was agreement between them and the (city) council about getting some bathrooms there. We have moved from a brick and mortar (facility) to a Portland Loo. So we’ll put one at MLK right there at Gregory (Street).”

A second unit will be installed at the skate park on North Hayne Street and the third will find a home at Bruce Beach. This is because the city is looking into opening the completed portions of the new park at Bruce Beach before the total project is complete.

“It’s looking like right now, and again, this is not final, that we could have a phase one (at Bruce Beach) open at some point in March,” Reeves said. “Whereas the phase two would not be done until October. So, I felt like that was enough time to create some value for the citizens to let them use the playground, the pedestrian bridge and all that.”

In total, the city purchased five Portland Loos, but delivery of the final two is on hold while the city works to finalize some partners for the project.

“I’m looking at partnering with DIB and the University of West Florida about putting one perhaps at Museum Plaza, right there behind the museum in partnership with UWF,” Reeves said. “We had a great conversation with them, working on some final details there. And then the fifth one, at this point, would probably be a second restroom at Bruce Beach.”

According to Reeves, the city had previously evaluated many options for public restroom facilities, including stand-alone buildings, before settling on the prefabricated restroom design.

“The value of these is that they’re modular. So, if we see a greater need for one somewhere else, then we’ll plan for that and if we need to adjust, this allows us to do it, as opposed to a brick-and-mortar structure,” Reeves said.

58 | MARCH 2024
DIB Executive Director Walker Wilson said the DIB would work with the city to decide on operating hours.

City Selects Russell Sweatt as Facilities and Fleet Management Director

“We are delighted to support these outstanding organizations and their work on behalf of the communities in the Pensacola area and surrounding counties,” Farm Credit of Northwest Florida CEO John Gregory said. “I am proud of our employees, who contribute donations that are matched by Farm Credit of Northwest Florida, to provide these staff-nominated awards to worthy recipients. Working together, we can help our communities remain strong and resilient.”

Russell Sweatt has been selected as the first Facilities and Fleet Management Director for the City of Pensacola, responsible for overseeing the newly established Facilities and Fleet Management Department which provides preventative maintenance and repair services to city vehicles, buildings and equipment.

Sweatt recently served as Focus Factory Manager for Overhead Door, where he planned and directed cost effective production activities and managed the flow of materials and labor. While in the role, Sweatt directly managed six supervisors and a team of 400 employees, continuously improving operational performance.

Prior to his position with Overhead Door, Sweatt served as Senior Facilities Maintenance Manager for United Airlines at Denver International Airport. In addition to facility maintenance, he managed a budget of more than $15 million and oversaw the performance of contract services relative to facilities and employee support areas.

Sweatt earned his Bachelor of Science from the University of Maryland Global Campus. He is also a veteran of the United States Air Force.

“I am very grateful to have been selected to lead the newly created Facilities and Fleet Management Department," Sweatt said. "Maintenance is something I’ve always enjoyed and working with folks that share that same passion is very rewarding."

As Facilities and Fleet Management Director, Sweatt will work under the direction of Deputy City Administrator David Forte to organize, direct and coordinate the activities of the Facilities and Fleet Management Department.

“The creation of the new Facilities and Fleet Management Department is a major step forward for the City of Pensacola, as we look to safely maintain and operate city buildings and vehicles,” Mayor Reeves said. “Russell's facilities and operations experience will be invaluable to leading the city out of its generational deferred maintenance issue, and I look forward to having him on our team to improve the lives of Pensacola residents."

Chadbourne-DeMaria Foundation Grant Transforms Ronald McDonald House Kitchen

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Florida is pleased to announce a comprehensive kitchen renovation project in the Spring of 2024, made possible by a generous grant from the Chadbourne-DeMaria Foundation.

Since 2010, the Ronald McDonald House (RMH) has been an unwavering source of support for families with children undergoing medical treatment in Northwest Florida. Over the years, the original kitchen has served thousands of families, but the evolving needs for updated appliances, layout improvements, and enhanced functionality have prompted the decision for a full-scale renovation. Understanding the pivotal role of a well-equipped and comforting kitchen in supporting families during challenging times, the ChadbourneDeMaria Foundation has awarded RMH a substantial grant totaling $160,000. This grant will empower the enhancement of kitchen facilities, creating a warm and welcoming space for families and volunteers alike. Ronald McDonald House is proud to collaborate with local teams, Bear General Contractors and Lucy McLendon Design Inc., to execute the renovation project and better serve the community. Key features of the upcoming renovations include the incorporation of modern and efficient appliances, an updated design, and thoughtful touches to cultivate a warm and inviting atmosphere.

"We are thrilled to provide our families and volunteers with a beautiful new kitchen that not only improves functionality but captures the heart of what we do. A well-designed and equipped kitchen is more than just a space to prepare meals – it's a place where families can find solace, support, and a sense of normalcy during challenging times. We hope this renovated kitchen will bring joy and comfort to those who call the Ronald McDonald House their temporary home," CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Florida Summer Jimmerson said.

The anticipated completion of the kitchen renovation is expected to be in the Summer of 2024 and will significantly enhance the overall experience for families staying at RMH.

Friends of the West Florida Public Library Announces New Sponsor – My Pensacola Credit Union

The leaders of the Friends of the West Florida Public Library (FWFPL) and My Pensacola Credit Union are excited to announce that My Pensacola CU has become an official, annual sponsor of the FWFPL for 2024.

The FWFPL is a nonprofit organization whose members promote public interest in the Library by supporting educational programs for adults and children, promoting the use of the libraries’ resources and services, receiving and encouraging gifts and bequests to the West Florida Public Library, supporting the Library in developing library services and facilities for the community, and supporting the freedom to read as expressed in the American Library Association Bill of Rights.

The primary way the FWFPL does this is through fundraising book sales held 3 or 4 times a year. While the books sold are donated, these events have costs, including administrative expenses, supplies (such as the bags used on Sundays) and the price of a rental truck that is needed to move pallets of books from the Friends’ warehouse to the library location on Spring Street. My Pensacola CU’s leadership also believes that a strong library system is an indication of a strong community. When the Credit Union heard about the sales, they realized they could help keep more of the funds raised dedicated to library support by assisting the Friends by covering the book sales’ operational costs.

“When I was first approached about this possibility, I was thrilled to find out this local business that has been here for 70 years was interested in partnering with us in our 50th year!” said Linda Williams, FWFPL President. “Conversations have already started about ways we will be able to work together to encourage public support for our mission to advocate for literacy and learning as well as supporting our library systems.”

“As a corporate sponsor, My Pensacola CU is dedicated to helping Friends of West Florida Public Library succeed in their mission to improve literacy,” states James Phetteplace, President and CEO of My Pensacola Credit Union. “We are excited to partner with an organization that aligns with our goals to improve our local communities when it comes to various forms of literacy and education. Together our efforts and reach will have a greater positive impact on many.”

In addition to a financial donation to help fund the book sales, this new partnership may also include Credit Union team members volunteering at book sales, providing publicity for Friends events in their branches, and even the possibility of teaming up to offer mini book sales at their branch locations.

Founded in 1953, My Pensacola Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial cooperative run for the benefits of those who are member-owners of the Credit Union. The earnings of the Credit Union, after expenses and reserves, are returned to the member-owners in the form of higher dividends, low-cost loans, and services. They believe in making a positive difference in people’s lives by listening and providing individual solutions with integrity via the financial products and services they offer.

Any person who lives, works, worships, or attends school in Escambia County, Florida, may belong to the Credit Union by opening a share (savings) account with a $5 membership deposit. The $5 deposit allows for a member’s active membership/ownership of the Credit Union, securing their membership for life no matter where they may live. As of December 2023, the Credit Union had approximately $84M in assets with approximately 4,600 members.

“The Friends are fortunate that My Pensacola Credit Union chose the Friends as an organization they want to sponsor and be associated with as part of their support of our community,” added Williams. “We are hoping this is just the beginning of a fantastic working relationship.”

Selecting the Right Potting Mix for Your Plantings

As gardeners, it seems we are all looking for an ideal potting mix for our houseplants and containers. As with any gardening endeavor, a lot depends on what is available, the plants you are growing, and the type of maintenance you provide.

That said, there are some things you can do to increase your success and reduce ongoing maintenance. It all starts by reviewing the label on the bag you plan to purchase. You’ll find a variety of bags labeled as planting mix, potting mix, container mix, and more.  Check the label to see what the bag contains and recommendations for its use.

These mixes usually contain inorganic and organic materials and may also include sand and mineral soil. They may or may not be sterilized to kill weed seeds and pests.  If it doesn’t say sterilized, it probably is not, and you should consider another product instead.

Many potting mixes are labeled as “soilless.” They consist of peat moss, sphagnum moss, and compost for moisture retention and vermiculite or perlite for drainage but do not contain mineral soils such as sand or clay. They are lightweight and blended to hold moisture while draining well.

Some potting mixes are modified to accommodate the needs of certain plants. Orchid mixes often contain more bark for better aeration while cacti and succulent mixes have more sand or perlite for better drainage. African Violet potting mix contains more organic matter to create a moist, rich growing medium.

Organic potting mixes are also available. Many gardeners prefer to know the ingredients are free of pesticides and other contaminants. Check for the word organic and OMRI on the label if you want an organic product.

Once again, check the label on the bag for more details on the potting mix.  Some potting mixes contain a “starter charge” of fertilizer. This minimal amount of fertilizer is usually gone after two or three waterings.

Some include additional fertilizer that provides small amounts of nutrients over a longer period. The label may say controlled-release, time-release, or slow-release fertilizer, meaning it provides your plants with nutrients for a certain amount of time.

Moisture retaining products are supposed to hold water near plant roots and reduce the frequency of watering. Research has not shown them to be effective. Some gardeners feel they are effective while others end up with root rot when using these.

Consider adding an organic product, like Wild Valley Farms wool pellets (wildvalleyfarms.com) to potting mixes that do not contain moisture-retaining products. It is sustainable, made from wool waste, University-tested, and has been shown to reduce watering by up to twenty percent, while also increasing air space and adding organic matter.

Select bags of potting mix that are light, fluffy, and moist. Avoid bags that are waterlogged and heavy. The mix can break down and become compacted and some of the slowrelease fertilizer may be pre-released and damage young seedlings when saturated with water.

Spend a bit of time searching for the potting mix that best matches the plants you are growing and your watering regime. The time spent selecting your perfect potting mix will pay off with greater growing success.

Making History

We celebrated the new year with a bang! Making history by closing the highest priced home ever to be sold on Pensacola Beach. I listed an impressive Gulf-front estate and began to imagine how vitally important it would be to price it equitably and give it the recognition it deserved; so, we immersed ourselves. Every detail mattered. Formulating a price point with no comps was the first challenge. It took an abundance of research and a conscientious effort to justify details. Since the home was being sold fully-furnished and move-in ready, every distinguishing characteristic was relevant and showcasing quality was paramount. Impeccably designed and tastefully furnished, the home is a work of art.

We scheduled multiple walk-throughs, fine-tuning and homestaging arranged to emphasize attractive features. After the groundwork was laid, marketing was the next challenge. We hired skilled photographers and drone specialists. We perfected the descriptions and wording and distributed it throughout the market to national media sites. We hosted a broker’s open house and received encouraging feedback from our local real estate community. Advertising to a niche market takes a certain skill and technique. It’s not just how

you allocate a marketing budget, but how and to whom you circulate it. We received inquiries from across the country from Seattle to Miami, and even as far away as Europe.

The crowning glory was receiving a signed contract to purchase in only 57 days. The buyers were elated, we were elated and we started the new year off with a bang when the home closed the first week of 2024. We made history!

Pensacola is hitting the big time. Our sleepy little town is growing and prospering. In early February, a well-known travel magazine published an impressive article naming Pensacola Beach as one of the best beaches in the country. It went on to rave about our fine cuisine, great new hotels and our flourishing downtown! It boasted that Pensacola is putting the Florida panhandle on the map, “with 40 miles of sugar-sand beaches, a rich history and culture and Blue Angel air shows twice a year.” Of course, we who live here know that, but now a well-deserved spotlight is shining on us.

With such a unique mix of culture and the beach, we’ve got it covered. You won’t find another city in the country with the whitest sand and sparkling Gulf waters, coupled with a thriving port, a world class indoor arena; a waterfront baseball stadium, the theater, the opera, the symphony; art and history museums, festivals, fine dining and so much more—it’s the best of all worlds.

On the subject of notoriety: Just over a week after the travel magazine article, I spotted an article in the Wall Street Journal championing the momentum our town is experiencing titled, “Million-Dollar Home Sales Were Rare Around Pensacola. Now They’re Everywhere.” The article went on to state that non luxury home sales have shot up in the metro area, representing a nearly 58 percent jump in home prices. I remember around twenty years ago, you could roll a bowling ball down Palafox Street after 5 pm and not hit a thing. Downtown was a virtual ghost town.

I think the revitalization of Pensacola’s downtown coupled with the rising popularity on Pensacola Beach, has been a boom to a luxury market, which is showing few signs of letting up. Tourists leave with a positive feeling and promise themselves they’ll be back. Residents are excited about the uptick in business and activities. We are fashioning into a charming destination and I’m proud to call it home.
