Editor’s Note my two cents on the subject Kelly Oden Executive Editor Can you believe our cover this month? How adorable is Balto? I have to say, the photo shoot with these sweet pups was so much fun and our Art Director Guy Stevens did such an amazing job capturing their personalities and spirit. Thanks so much to Sarah Humlie and the Pensacola Humane Society for working with us and for all of the wonderful work they do on behalf of our community.

Please consider adopting a pet from them or one of the many rescue agencies or shelters in town. In my opinion, pet adoption is the only way to go when looking to add a fur baby to your home and family. Shelter pets are often abandoned due to no fault of their own and all they need to reach their full canine or feline potential is a little love.

We hope you enjoy our portraits of these five wonderful dogs, all of whom are currently available for adoption at the Pensacola Humane Society.

This time of year always gets me itching for a road trip. There is something about late summer, with the new school year on the horizon, that just makes me want to take advantage of the remaining few weeks of freedom for my daughter and hit the open road for a great adventure.

While a west coast road trip is the ultimate goal for some future summer, there are plenty of short, quick locales

for Pensacolians to enjoy for a day, a weekend or a week.

Highway 90 is a great place to start. With plenty of outdoor adventures and natural beauty as well as wildlife encounters and small towns with big histories, a Highway 90 road trip is sure to have something for everyone. Check out our picks on page 28.

Are you ready for some football?

Blame it on being raised in the South or blame it on attending an SEC school. I can’t help myself. I love college football. I look forward to the first game with the same emotion I feel about New Year’s Eve. The slate is clean and the possibilities are endless. This might be the year for a national championship! Who cares if the experts say you’ve got nothing?

Any fan knows that odds and opinions aren’t worth a whole lot, as absolutely anything can happen when two teams take the field. The instant my team runs through that tunnel, exploding into the light like the second coming, joy sweeps over me and the world is all-good. A great band, pom poms shaking wildly, the smell of popcorn and Jack Daniels in the air, and thunderous noise that would rival the Blue Angels set the stage for total frenzy. I could just scream with the thrill of it all. Of course, winning doesn’t hurt, either.

Several years ago someone I truly respect and admire commented on my football enthusiasm. He said that he never suspected

that I was the type to “be into all of that.” I didn’t even know what to say. I know that he probably meant it as a compliment, as he feels that the sport is nothing more than commercial exploitation and downright barbaric and how could someone halfway intelligent possibly promote such insanity. I almost confessed on the spot that Gladiator is my favorite movie ever, and that physical contact as sport is certainly nothing new. However, my immediate reaction was such that all I could feel was pity. The craziness of college football can’t be replaced.

Hockey and soccer are great, but football is in a league of its own.

This time of the year, while the heat is still oppressive and going back to school is on our minds, you can go out early in the morning and there it is: a tiny hint of fall in the air. You can feel it and you can smell it.

I grew up in a home where Saturdays were all about the games.

My father had television and radio blaring in the same room so he could hear different commentary on every play. He had his favorite team, one I shall not mention because I now and

always will consider them very much a bitter foe, but it really didn’t matter who was playing. There is a certain sound that comes from a game that is almost like comfort food to me.

From the time they were babies, I took my children on road trips to football games. It was a fall ritual for us to pack for the tailgate party and get up early to decorate. Magnet decals, flags, you name it and we had it plastered on our car. Once we hit the game day traffic the kids were almost uncontrollable. Seeing our brethren in the same colors making the trek to Jordan Hare Stadium created a bond amongst us motorists on I-65. One year my son broke his arm playing football the night before the LSU game and all we could think about was not being there. I nearly kissed the doctor who gave us his blessing to go, as long as that arm was held upright the entire time. We stuck a shaker in his cast and watched Auburn score four times in the fourth quarter to win the game. Neither weather, divorce, nor broken bones would keep us at home. No sir. and almost sprinted the last 60 miles to the Plains. Evidently, I didn’t do a good enough job on passing along the spirit of my alma mater. My daughter graduated as a Gator and my son a Seminole, but their love of the game is undiminished. I enjoy the Swamp and I think Osceola is the most awesome human mascot in the entire football kingdom. But when Auburn’s eagle swoops down before kick-off and perches on the 50-yard line, we all get unglued. I have seen plenty of grown men cry during this raw demonstration of power and beauty.

So here we are, ready for a new season. Whether it is a new school year, a new calendar year, or a new anything, starting over has every advantage in the world. Set your goals. Try your hardest. Do it right this time. Hope and determination have always been a winning game plan.

War Eagle!

Football is not the only game coming on quickly. Political primaries and elections steal part of the same season and are almost as intense as SEC rivalries. Most of the candidates are holding fundraisers around town now, hoping to get their share of the contributions. Plenty of seasoned politicians are running this year but it is also exciting to see so many new faces offering themselves for public service. We stopped by the south Palafox Street home of John and Jerre Peacock, where Barry and Lori Ripps were hosting an event for James Zumwalt who is running for Congress. Approximately 75 guests

stopped by to meet the grandson of the famous Admiral.

Sunday’s Child, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote equality and inspire inclusion across the community, recently met for their annual membership event and awarded cash grants to The Beacon and to First City Art Center.

The two were selected from a long list of applicants, all with programs to lead change and acceptance of others. More than 100 members and guests turned out on a hot Sunday afternoon for the live membership vote. Among those attending were Dr. Chuck Presti, president of the organization; Mike Bruce; Jim Goldman; Allan Benton; Delories Richerson; Janie Switzer; and Lori Storey.

The Council on Aging of West Florida kicked off this season’s Rat Pack Reunion with an afterfive cocktail party at Jackson’s Steakhouse hosted by Collier Merrill.

This year’s rat honorees include

Ray Russenberger, Joe Durant, and Sheriff David Morgan. The main event is Oct. 21, but festivities are well underway. Meatballs

1 pound organic ground turkey or grass-fed ground beef 1 cup organic kale, finely chopped 1/2 cup crushed brown rice crackers 1 egg 1/4 teaspoon red chili pepper flakes 1/4 teaspoon sea salt non-stick cooking spray

4 medium zucchini

In large mixing bowl, combine ground meat, kale, crackers, egg, chili pepper flakes and salt. Use hands to form mixture into 12 balls. Refrigerate 30-60 minutes to help meatballs set.

Mist meatballs with non-stick cooking spray and place them on grill. Grill each side 3-4 minutes, using tongs to flip to sides that haven’t been browned yet. Meatballs should reach internal temperature of 165 F. Using vegetable spiralizer, create zucchini noodles.

Toss zucchini with tomatoes, Parmesan, vinegar, olive oil, salt and pepper.

Serve each zoodle plate with three meatballs.

Season chicken breast, corn, asparagus, bell pepper and zucchini with olive oil, sea salt and pepper.

Grill chicken 6-7 minutes per side, internal tem­perature reaches 165 F. Grill corn 10-15 minutes, rotating after every pop, until corn is golden. Grill asparagus, bell pepper and zucchini 3-5 minutes per side, until tender.

Separate chicken, corn, asparagus, bell pepper and zucchini evenly into two bowls. Drizzle bowls with Cashew Ranch Dressing.

Note: Bowl leftovers can be refrigerated for up to four days.

o you imagine yourself as an artful archer like Katniss Everdeen, or roguish Robin Hood? Although these famous bow-wielders make the sport seem easy, there’s a lot more to firing bolts and arrows than meets the eye, especially if you’re looking to be a professional at hitting the bull’s eye. We’re talking about a specific stance that should be the same every time if you want to air on the side of accuracy instead of luck. So, we’ve done the research for you on the proper archery posture for maintaining a balanced center of gravity, which will keep you from getting fatigued and make sure you land consistent shots each time you take aim.

If you’re looking to pick up the bow, but you’re unsure of where to begin to learn how to handle yourself and the equipment, you might

check out some of the free classes and archery instruction offered by Panhandle Bowhunters and Archery Association every Thursday at Klondike Archery Park. Whether you’re an experienced archer or new to the game of archery, there’s plenty of learning opportunities and chances to sharpen your skill at the public park open to minors and adults. If you’re wondering just how much skill it actually takes to use a bow, there’s Olympic Games and Summer Paralympics dedicated to archery—a sport that requires a considerable amount of strength, endurance and patience to practice the appropriate archery posture for maintaining consistent shots. But with the right attitude and aptitude for following instruction, you too can master the art of archery. pensacola magazine | 21

The Art of Archery Choosing a Bow When it comes to choosing a bow to start out your training, you’ll have your choice between four major types: compound, recurve, longbow and crossbow. As a rule, there is no universal bow for beginners—it really all depends on personal preference.

However, many archers agree that recurve bows provide a lot more feedback to archers and their instructors, because flaws in form and technique are easier to identify. Recurve bows take more effort to pull back the bowstring, while compound bows alleviate the tension on the archer through its pulley and cable system.

Compound bows use a system of cables and pulleys for bending the bow’s limbs, granting the archer a mechanical advantage since the limbs are made more stiff than those of a recurve or longbow, improving accuracy and giving higher energy and quicker shots to arrows.

Recurve bows have limbs that curve away from the wielder and the purpose of this shape is to store and deliver energy more efficiently as the archer draws back, ultimately providing greater speed to the arrow when released.

A longbow is typically as tall as the archer holding it, and the bow’s height allows the archer to achieve a fairly long draw, which requires the bow to be made out of longer, more elastic, timber than other bow types.

Crossbows appear to be horizontal bow-like assemblies mounted on a stock with a mechanism that holds the bowstring, and they come in various types, including recurve and compound.

Posture Posture is one of the most critical aspects of archery, as your form will affect your execution and proper archery posture facilitates better

power transmission from your core muscles, which give you the strength to perform consistent shots many times without tiring out too soon.

To improve your archery stance, especially if you’re just starting out, you should be prepared to dedicate a minimum of two or three practice sessions to adopting the right posture before you start firing.

Posture is about establishing a “foundation” with your body from your feet and lower back to your chest, as body alignment and keeping your center of gravity low are part of creating a solid foundation for consistent and accurate shots.

Memorize the following steps and you’ll be well on your way to establishing a stable foundation for your archery posture: Keep the space between your feet about shoulder width apart. If your feet are spaced too close together, or spaced too wide apart, then you will become bilaterally instable—i.e., you will experience more swaying of the upper body and have less control over holding your aim. When your body weight is properly distributed, your feet should give the sensation of being well planted on the ground and you will experience less rocking.

Recurve Bow

What sets the recurve apart from other bows is its uniquely shaped limbs, which curve away from the archer. The purpose of the recurve’s shape is to store and deliver energy more efficiently than the equivalent straight-limbed bow, providing greater speed to the arrow. The recurve shape permits a smaller bow size and was often preferred by archers in environments where long weapons could be cumbersome (such as on horseback and through rough terrain). The modern recurve is the only form of bow permitted in the Olympic Games, although some categories at the Paralympics allow for use of compound bows.

Next is making sure you keep a straightened lower back as shooting with a “sway back,” or arched lower back, can destabilize your stance and cause vulnerability to lower back pain or injury. Sway back causes your center of gravity to be placed forward of your knees, making you unstable. But, you can flatten the lower back by tightening the gluteus muscles until you feel stable. Do you feel like you can be knocked over by the smallest push? If the answer is no, then you’ve stabilized your posture.

Now relax your rib cage and make sure your chest is lowered, since lowering your chest stabilizes your center of gravity and helps you stay grounded for accurate shots. Compressing the chest down also helps prevent your lower back from arching and should make your back feel more relaxed, too.

It’s time to check your drawing arm: is your elbow placed directly behind the arrow? Your forearm (on your drawing arm) should be parallel, or in-line, with the arrow shaft and your shoulders should be rotated down and back. For the arm that is gripping the bow, you should make sure your elbow is rotated so that the inside joint is pointing straight up and down.

Longbow

It’s no surprise that the longbow gets its name from its height; it is a very tall bow, roughly equal to the height of the wielder. The bow’s height allows the archer to achieve a fairly long draw, coming back at least to the user’s jaw.

The limbs of the bow are relatively narrow and they are more circular, or D-shaped, in cross section. Because of its narrow limbs and rounded cross section, if a modern longbow is made out of wood then it requires longer, or more elastic, timber than other bows. Historically, the longbow was a “self bow,” meaning it was made from a single piece of wood. However, today’s longbows may be made from modern materials, or by gluing different timbers together.

The final step is adopting the correct anchor point. Many new archers “float” the anchor, which means they do not have firm contact with the bowstring hand against the side of the face. To avoid “floating,” draw the bowstring back toward the side of your face until the tip of your index finger can be placed on the corner of your mouth.

Then tuck your thumb into the palm of your hand before also folding your little finger toward your palm, keeping both fingers firm but relaxed.

Now’s the time to press your hand firmly against the side of your face, keeping the index finger at the crook of your mouth. The bowstring should be just off the side of your nose as you maintain the full draw weight of the bow.

Adopting an incorrect posture will raise your body’s center of gravity too high, causing your weight to be unequally distributed over one foot or the other, which negatively impacts the accuracy of your shots.

Technique You want to develop good handling habits from the beginning, so the best way to achieve this is through repetition; practice setting up your basic archery stance and drawing back your arrow. The more time you allow yourself you go through mental and physical exercises, the more in-tune and aware you will be of your overall posture and stability.

On the first day of practice, you might start with 30 repetitions. Increase these after your third day. Repetition not only helps develop muscle memory, but improves your strength and endurance for holding stable postures and maintaining a long draw on your bow.

Advanced archers will shoot anywhere from 30 to 60 arrows in a session, while competitive archers can and will shoot 120 or more.

If you’re worried about finding time to make it out onto the range, you can even practice at home, or work, by mentally performing the steps without the bow.

Use a straight-edged object to form an imaginary shooting line on the floor so you have a visual point of reference. Now mentally focus and perform each step of the process as its outlined to the right, repeating the entire process for at least 10 minutes.

course, if you’re accompanying minors onto the range make sure they can be accounted for at all times—never allow children to walk unattended through the range.

Also, never nock an arrow (a sign you are preparing to shoot) when other archers are downrange retrieving arrows from targets. In fact, while it may seem like a given, you should remember to never shoot while someone is downrange.

Shoot and aim only in your assigned lane. If you finish shooting before the archers next to you, the polite response is to remain quiet and avoid creating distractions while you wait for your neighbor to finish. Then you may attempt to collect your arrows from the target.

Compound Bow

The compound bow is the most dominant and popular bow form in the US. It is a modern bow that uses a levering and cam (or wheel) system, consisting of cables and pulleys, for bending the bow’s limbs.This grants a mechanical advantage, as the compound’s limbs are made more stiff than those of either a recurve or longbow, which improves accuracy and reduces the bow’s sensitivity to changes in humidity and temperature. The cam system also maximizes energy storage during the draw cycle and allows the bow to operate with a different weight profile, allowing users to reach peak weight within the first few inches of the draw, which is why compound bows store more energy and shoot faster than an equivalent peak weight recurve or longbow.

Crossbow

The crossbow is a horizontal bow-like assembly mounted on a stick, also called a stock, with a mechanism in it to hold the drawn bow string. Instead of arrows, crossbows use bolts or quarrels. The most prominent crossbows are the compound and recurve. Recurve crossbows have tips curving away from the archer, similar to recurve bows, which grants higher acceleration with less hand shock, but they often create added strain to the bow’s materials that results in a noisy shot. The compound crossbow, similar to the bow, has a pulley system—however, compound crossbows use round and concentrically-mounted pulleys, while the bows use eccentric pulleys and cams.

The pride of Pensacola, the genius of the green, Bubba Watson is known for his multiple green jackets and a larger-than-life personality, but the world will soon know him as an Olympian, too. He grew up in Bagdad, Fla., little more than a shot-making drive from his new business venture, Bubba’s Sweet Spot, in the heart of downtown Pensacola.

He began the beautiful game at age 6 and slowly developed his abilities through middle and high school before earning himself a golf scholarship to the University of Georgia. Since then, it’s been title after title and PGA Tour after PGA Tour.

This accomplished golfer and good ole’ Southern boy will be making his hometown proud in the Rio Olympics this year. Pensacola Magazine caught up with him to hear about his game, his legacy and more. Catch him on the Olympics broadcast Aug. 11 through 14 and 17 through 20.

How has the Sweet Spot been?

It’s been amazing. We wanted the soft opening to learn. This is my first time in a real business.

We asked for people’s comments as far as what treats they like and what flavors they like. We’re still learning, but we’re headed in a good direction, the workers are enjoying it, and my mom hasn’t yelled at me yet. Everybody is smiling and not one person is upset. It’s just fun. When you look at trying to get people downtown and trying to grow the area, every big city around the world has a treat shop. This area, Palafox and Main, is a perfect location. I’m a kid at heart.

How do you feel about the Olympics?

In my own career, these are some big weeks coming up. I’m excited to play for my country.

I know what a Ryder Cup feels like. I know what a President’s Cup feels like. I played on the USA team in South Africa when I was in college, so I know what that feels like. There’s going to be other athletes performing that I want to see. So I’ll be a fan, and then when I get on the green I’ll be a participant. It’ll be amazing.

What do you feel the dynamics are going to be?

The Master’s is pretty much a world level, but even this will be a different event. I’m going in there blind. I think it’s going to be amazing. I can’t wait to be

there. I’m going to be a fan since this is the first time I’ll get to be there in person.

Will you be watching Justin Gatlin?

For sure, I can’t wait. As a 34-year-old, that’s not supposed to happen in that sport. But he keeps impressing people. He does stuff you can’t believe. I’ll definitely be hanging out with him and talking to him. I’ve always said that Pensacola is so special. There are a million sports but so many greats come from here, like Emmitt Smith and Derrick Brooks. They mean so much to kids here. It’s so special to me to be an Olympic athlete for them. Pensacola is a lot bigger than you think when you think about what we’ve created in the world of sports.

Any trepidation about the Zika virus? Are you bringing your family?

I have no concerns. We’ve adopted our kids, so we weren’t worried about the birth defects.

I’m not worried about the security concerns either. As soon as they said, “You’re on the Olympic team,” I was in. There’s no fear on my side. I’m not bringing my family. They don’t travel outside the U.S. because of time changes and the like.

But mainly, I need my sleep. It’s mainly about my sleep, so they’ll stay here.

How’s your game going?

Golf is a funny sport. It’s all about emotions. If I get enough sleep, I can keep my emotions in check and stay focused. I’ve improved a lot over the British Open. My swing is where I want it. These have been some good weeks for me. I’m looking forward to competing.

I know you’ve appeared in a lot of humor videos for charity. Tell me about your philanthropic passions.

I’m passionate about kids in all levels, not just in sports. We’ve adopted both of our kids so obviously adoption and foster care are very big on my heart.

Also, military. I want to do as much as I can do for military because of the freedoms they

Talk about your relationship with Pensacola.

I was born and raised here. The city has given me so much.

Somebody sponsored junior golf tournaments when I was young so I could get exposure and learn. For me, it’s about coming back. I’m thinking about my legacy so I’m trying to create jobs and make sure the city stays here for many, many years. This is how I want to come back and help the city that helped me.

I’m not just a golfer. Golf has enabled me to do a lot of things, but I do have a passion for those other things.

give us. I get to play golf because of that. Our country, I believe, is the greatest country in the world. Those causes are very important to me—kids and military.

Are you looking to form your schedule around majors or is it more important to you to win tournaments?

I believe that every tournament is a major. If there was a tournament here in Pensacola like there used to be, it would be a big deal for the city—both in terms of revenue and charity dollars. So every city we go to, it’s a big deal. I want to win tournaments.

What would you like your legacy to be?

A good friend, a good husband, and a good dad. The trophies, those don’t mean anything at the end of my life. It’s the most important things that all of us need in our life—to be a good friend, a good person, a good parent, a good husband or good wife.

You are notoriously faithful to the brand that sponsors you. Speak a little about loyalty.

If you think about Pensacola, I was born here, I was raised here. There’s some business that sponsored junior golf, my sports

programs, and helped it be cheap, affordable or free for me to play in those events, so I want to give back to them. I’m loyal to Pensacola. Pensacola gave me my values. Pensacola has helped me become the person who I am, the golfer who I am, and now an Olympic athlete.

Why not come back and try to help out? Someone has helped this city in the past, and that benefitted me, so now I feel it’s my turn. Just like Lebron said, he was mature enough to go home. As soon as he said that, I knew I was mature enough to go home.

How do you feel the Olympics will help promote the PGA? If we do it the right way, the world will be watching. The countries that are passionate about golf will see it and get behind it. That’s the same thing that all the golf organizations want to do: they want to bring golf to the Olympics so the world can see it. It doesn’t matter if you win a medal or not; it’s about bringing the game global.

I’ve learned a lot from Pensacola but I’ve also learned a lot from golf. It’s taught me more than just how to play golf; it’s taught me things outside of golf. It’s taught me about life.

The town sits on the banks of the spring-fed Lake Defuniak, which is a true rarity—one of only two such almost perfectly circular bodies of water in the world. The other is located in Switzerland. A collection of Victorian homes surrounds the lake and adds to the nostalgic charm. Founded in the 1880s as a railroad stop for the L & N Railroad, DeFuniak Springs retains its old Florida look and feel. In fact, the Walton County Library on Circle Drive is the oldest library in Florida still operating in its original building. It houses an interesting assortment of antiquities, including an impressive medieval weapon collection and many first-edition books. The former L&N railroad depot now houses the Walton County Heritage Museum. The town became the winter home of the New York Chautauqua, an educational movement that attracted thousands of visitors to Defuniak Springs in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Chautauqua Vineyards, a 40-acre vineyard located 12 miles north of Defuniak Springs offer tours and tastings of their wide variety of muscadine wines.

The crystal clear water maintains a year-round temperature of 68 degrees. Approximately 14 million gallons of pure water emerges daily from the Ponce de Leon Spring. Spring water emanates from the aquifer deep underground. European settlers and American Indians before them used this spring as a source of drinking water and recreation. While the spring is the main attraction, the park also offers ample opportunity for hiking, birding, fishing, snorkeling and even geocaching.

If you love the idea of spending time with wild wolves in a relatively safe environment, this is the trip for you. Seacrest Wolf Preserve, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to wolf and wildlife conservation through education. At Seacrest Wolf Preserve, humans and wolves connect in nature for educational purposes.

The rare hands on wolf-human interaction are profound learning opportunities for humans to connect on a deeper level with wolves in the hope that visitors will be inspired to join the effort to save America’s wolves and wild heritage. The preserve offers a variety of tour options, but the four-hour Saturday educational tour is the most economical. It includes plenty of wolf centric education and interaction with three wolf packs, including both Grey and Arctic wolves. The tour concludes at the small animal adventure where guests can cuddle with skunks, interact with foxes and feed the raccoons. Only children 12 and older are allowed on the wolf encounter tour.

falling waters state park 1130 State Park Road Chipley, FL 32428 (850) 638-6130 floridastateparks.org/park/Falling-Waters The star of the show at Falling Waters State Park is most certainly Florida’s highest waterfall. To see the waterfall, visitors follow Sink Hole Trail, a boardwalk flanked by huge trees and fern-covered sinkholes. Falling Waters Sink is a 100-foot deep, 20-foot wide cylindrical pit into which flows a small stream that drops 73 feet to the bottom of the sink. The water’s final destination remains unknown.

Located a few miles south of I-10, the quiet and serene park also offers visitors the chance to see beautiful native and migrating butterflies in the butterfly garden, take a dip in the lake, or have a family picnic. Hikers enjoy trekking through the green, gently sloping landscape of North Florida. Full-facility campsites nestled in a shady pine forest provide the perfect excuse for an overnight stay at Falling Waters.

Inside the dry (air-filled) caves, visitors will see incredible formations of limestone stalactites, stalagmites, soda straws, flowstones and draperies. The park’s caves have a long and interesting geologic history beginning about 38 million years ago when this area was submerged beneath high sea levels.

Shells, coral and sediments gradually accumulated on the sea floor and as sea levels fell, these materials hardened into limestone. During the last million years, acidic groundwater dissolved crevices just below the surface creating cave passages large enough to walk through.

Stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone and other fragile cavedrip formations were by a similar dissolving process by the naturally acidic rainwater. The caves provide a habitat for the blind cave crayfish, cave salamanders and three species of cave roosting bats. The park also contains the Chipola River and Blue Hole Spring, which provide areas for fishing, canoeing and boating. Florida Caverns State Park is popular for camping, picnicking, fishing, hiking, and horseback riding. The park also features a nine-hole, New Deal-era golf course set in beautiful rolling terrain.

Spott was transferred from Escambia County Shelter after his chance at adoption ran out. Spott is a volunteer favorite at the Humane Society. Though he is 90 percent deaf (due to an untreated ear infection), he is one of our most wellmannered pooches. He is a gentleman on the leash, walking confidently beside his human, not pulling or jumping, and he loves to meet new people. He spends a great deal of time making cute facial gestures and cocking his ear as if saying, "speak into my good ear!" He looks tough on the outside, but he is nothing but a big teddy bear. He rarely barks, and he loves to go on adventures such as camping, hiking, and swimming in the bay.

BY JOSH NEWBY If every interaction in life is a learning opportunity, then students at the University of West Florida College of Business are getting a head start on real-world management and

marketing techniques by interfacing with local businesses in desperate need of their help. It’s called live case studies, and it takes students away from boring textbook anecdotes about problems far-away businesses have faced and places them in the boardrooms of local companies looking to solve problems.

As workplace expectations change and the workforce is increasingly competitive, employers are looking to hire even entry-level applicants who already have some experience. When profit margins are tight and time means money, it is imperative that business students and fresh hires can hit the ground running. Enter the incorporation of real-world experience with classroom duties and credits.

While capstone projects and internships

generally look to improve soft skills and provide directed integration of textbook theories with the real world, research has shown that live case studies can actually teach hard skills, such as executive strategy, as well as more interpersonal attributes like communication. This is particularly true with those who do not have a lot of experience in the workplace, such as college students.

These live case study exercises do not replace an internship, however. In fact, the current body of research shows that,when used in tandem, or when immediately following an internship experience, the live case study process can further improve applied project learning outcomes beyond those of either experience alone.

consulting projects were instituted in two MBA classes when Tim O’Keefe was director the program. The experience resulted in increased application of learning as part of the curriculum and often to published peer-reviewed cases that can be used as learning tools by any program worldwide.

“When I became dean, my goal was to push those experiences down into the undergraduate program,” said O’Keefe. “At first, a few faculty members signed on for the experiment. This past year we had over 25 percent of our full-time faculty incorporating these type of experiential learning opportunities into their classes resulting in over 50 engagements involving more than 250 students. Several students have had three or more of these experiences during their undergraduate studies here and report added confidence in the interview process because they can describe to recruiters specific ways they have applied their learning to actual business problems.”

In fact, students of everything from marketing and social media to management are taking part in the program, which is just about a year old. They have worked with places like Scenic Hills Country Club, Boneheads, ISS Global, McMahon & Hadder and AccountingFly. “We work with the Florida Small Business

Development Center to vet the company, then place students in charge of gathering pertinent information,” said Sherry Hartnett, professor of internet marketing and social media marketing classes. “We put together what we want the students to learn and analyze, and then they make recommendations to tie in with what we’re teaching.”

Recently, Hartnett led groups of students to look at digital marketing initiatives. The students met with the “clients,” compiled information on marketing and website analytics, then suggested changes. Another group looked at a social media platform and website and suggested campaign ideas to the clients.

“Oftentimes, these businesses do not employ marketing professionals; that’s not necessarily their specialty,” said Hartnett. “So when we come in, we’ll notice that a website might have a lot of good content and photos, but the website is not easy to navigate. It might be difficult for users, so students will actually map out a different homepage layout and navigation structure, to make is easier for customers.”

Hartnett finds that the skills necessary to learn from the client, synthesize the real-world information with textbook theory, and present a cohesive campaign suggestion are easily translated to real-world business success.

“They learn skills like how to deal with ambiguity,” said Hartnett. “They learn how to move forward with incomplete information, deal with people’s personalities, and be kind but confident.”

While success of the campaign is often difficult to forecast at the end of the semester, when grades are due, professors grade the students on their application of classroom ideas and how they handled themselves in engaging with the business.

“The business owners may have a unique challenge or simply want a fresh perspective from college students. All people involved gain from the experiences and the Florida SBDC serves as a mediator between the clients and the students,” said Kelly Massey, who teaches for the MBA program. “Students have the chance to be a consultant and log session notes into our client consulting database. Clients are engaged with the university and helping mentor future business owners and leaders.”

Students are not the only ones who benefit, of course. Business leaders report great success with the campaigns and are enthusiastic about giving back to the community in this way.

“Business owners overall are pleased when being paired with student teams for live case projects,” said Massey. “Many Florida SBDC at UWF clients have commented how impressed they are with the College of Business students and the recommendations they provide.

Particularly feedback has been on how the students researched a new avenue of the client’s business, sought additional lower-cost marketing options and offered insight into expansion opportunities.”

These positive benefits extend beyond strictly business applications, too. A class on managing front office operations under the hospitality management major have completed front-desk training and developed procedure manuals for local hotels, including the Holiday Inn Resort in Fort Walton Beach and the Hampton Inn & Suites in Navarre. Marketing Essentials students conducted a case study for Okaloosa Gas Company, which included recommendations for service scheduling and delivery, as well as communication.

“At the end of each semester project, the student teams give a presentation to the clients,” said Massey. “The student teams provide research, data and best practices to support their recommendations. Business owners can ask them questions and provide constructive criticism at that time. Every semester at least one client says that they would love to hire all of the students from their project, if they had the budget and availability to do so.”

Word of the live case study has spread as other businesses in the area are chomping at the bit to take part in this mutually beneficial relationship. For students, the experience is a valuable one that provides a rare chance at executive strategy and networking while pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree.

For businesses, a fresh pair of eyes and a young approach to an age-old business might just be the sheen they need to boost those ever-important profits.

Everything you need to know on ECUA’s Biosolids Composting Facility and how it is transforming unwanted waste into certified, buyable bio-compost called “bloom.”

Residential yard waste is now a sought-after resource: that’s right, your yard’s leftover leaves and other plant materials collected by the ECUA’s Sanitation Department are being used in combination with biosolids to create a safe, nutrient-dense and environmentally-friendly soil amendment the ECUA is calling “bloom.”

In case you aren’t familiar with “biosolids,” they are the byproduct of the biological, chemical and mechanical treatment of wastewater. Since many associate human waste with the term wastewater, a common misconception is that “biosolids” refer to human fecal matter.

However, what is closer to truth is that biosolids are bacterial cells grown to treat wastewater. While in the wastewater, these bacteria consume nutrients and organic matter that are beneficial to compost, so when they are separated from the treated water they take all the nutrients with them.

The Emerald Coast bloom, a product that is available for residential and commercial use, contains the “big three” nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. While bloom is also rich in essential micronutrients like calcium, magnesium, zinc and sulfate, it maintains very low levels of unwanted heavy metals like cadmium, lead and mercury.

To better understand composting, it is a biological process in which macro- and microorganisms decompose organic matter (like dead leaves and plants) into an organic soil-like substance called compost. In fact, for those who were wondering if compost smells as bad as the materials that go into it, you might be happy to

know the finished product has an earthy scent similar to dirt and mulch.

There are a range of techniques and technologies involved in the process of composting, ranging from a simple compost pile in your backyard to a large-scale commercial operation.

Commercially speaking, there are three common ways to compost: turned windrow, aerated static pile, and in-vessel. Turned windrow is an elongated compost pile, or windrow, which is turned frequently to provide oxygen, distribute moisture and ensure the adequate decomposition of all materials. An aerated static pile is not turned, but air is still forced through the pile, usually with fans or blowers, in order to distribute oxygen throughout the pile. Thirdly, in-vessel compositing involves a large container, or other enclosure, in which the compost is mixed and oxygen is provided.

To create the Emerald Coast bloom, the ECUA uses a process called modified static aerobic pile (MSAP), which is a hybrid of turned windrow and aerated static pile techniques. Like the turned windrow, material is placed in a windrow, but what differs in the MSAP process is the placement of an inoculant, containing beneficial bacteria and fungus, which is placed on top of the mixed material.

On the surface of the inoculant, a capping layer of ground yard waste is added to serve as a blanket to both insulate the compost and reduce unpleasant odors.

capping layer, it pulls oxygen into the windrow much like in an aerated static pile, which allows all material to decompose properly. The pile is turned twice within 45 days, as opposed to the much more frequent turning within the turned windrow technique. This procedure saves money and continues to keep odors at a minimum, since there is no constant turning giving the odors a chance to escape.

So, how does yard waste come into the mix?

In order to properly compost biosolids, which are high in nitrogen, they must be combined with a material high in carbon. Luckily, yard waste is just the answer: it is an excellent source high in carbon, which the ECUA grinds into mulch before mixing it with the biosolids prior to composting.

Biosolids and yard waste are mixed in an approximately 3-to-1 ratio for optimal moisture, porosity, carbon-to-nitrogen ratio, and temperature. This blend has proven to be ideal for the compost process, as it helps to decompose both materials (yard waste and biosolids) rapidly.

By composting biosolids and yard waste, ECUA keeps both out of the landfill—where it benefits no one.

“The ECUA is utilizing yard trash and biosolids to create an environmentally beneficial compost,” said Randall Rudd, ECUA deputy executive director. “This eliminates the need to

landfill yard trash and biosolids, and provides a valuable compost resource to residents and businesses in the ECUA service area.”

During the composting process, the biosolids are “cooked” at up to 150 degrees, effectively eliminating bad bacteria and pathogens.

Emerald Coast bloom is currently sold to agricultural farms, landscape contractors, nurseries, golf course managers and more.

This is because it can be used for a range of commercial purposes, including but not limited to turf establishment, roadside plantings, erosion control, as well as land reclamation, restoration and remediation.

Yet, bloom may be used anywhere nutrients and organic matter can be used, including for residential purposes, such as maintaining and planting flower and garden beds, new or established trees and lawns, as well as soil for container plants.

Now that you’ve gotten your compost, if you’re curious about how to use it you should know that there are specific instructions for application included with your package of Emerald Coast bloom. Essentially, compost should be mixed with soil, or another planting medium, when planting for beds, containers, or any new plants. Compost can even be applied over existing plants.

In August 2014, the FDEP issued ECUA a permit to construct and operate a Biosolids Composting Facility at the ECUA’s Central Water Reclamation Facility (CWRF). The idea was to use biosolids sludge produced by the CWRF in combination with yard trash collected by the Sanitation Department, allowing yard trash previously disposed of in landfill to be recycled through composting.

This also allowed the CWRF to reduce the cost of natural gas, used to dry the biosolids sludge. The final product of compost is being sold to help offset the cost of the composting program.

Construction on the ECUA’s Biosolids Composting Facility (BCF) began in April 2015 and by late October the facility was at a stage that allowed the first windrows to be formed using yard trash and biosolids sludge from the CWRF. The first batch of finished compost was produced in December 2015, but the BCF celebrated its official opening in spring 2016.

Today, the 20-acre BCF composts about 400 tons of biosolids (half of the ECUA’s biosolids) and 500 tons of yard waste per week. Together, that totals at approximately 15,000 of finished compost produced annually by the BCF, but plans are already underway to double its capacity.

Before you put your yard waste out on the curb, remember you can help along the compositing process by joining the “Brown is the New Green, Leaf the Plastic Behind” initiative.

All you have to do is choose to bag dead leaves and other organic yard waste in brown, paper bags instead of plastic ones, since paper will break down naturally in the composting process.

You can also skip the bags and simply empty your leaves in a trash can for pickup.

To applaud the ECUA’s composting efforts in our community, the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) announced the ECUA’s Biosolids Composting Facility as the winner of the 2016 SWANA Golf Excellence Award in the composting category.

programs and facilities that advance the practice of environmentally and economically sound solid waste management, for those who show great commitment to utilizing effective technologies and processes in system design and operations, advancing worker and community healthy and safety, and implementing successful public education and outreach programs.

These programs must demonstrate that they are fiscally and environmentally responsible through their compliance with all applicable federal, state and local regulations, as well.

Emerald Coast bloom, also known as the “Most in Bio-Compost,” is certified under the US Composting Council’s Seal of Testing Assurance program. This means the product is tested regularly to make sure it achieves Class AA quality and state standards that require it meet the following properties: high organic matter, macro and micronutrient, and ideal moisture contents, as well as balanced pH and soluble salts, low heavy metals. These tests also guarantee the compost remains free from pathogens and that it stays both stable and mature.

Nobody likes Congress but their Congressman. You’ve got to have a Congressman who listens to the people, somebody who’s accessible. Our nation is in dire straits. We’ve got to have someone willing to stand up and say that there’s something we got to do.

We have got to have a strong military, term limits, and a balanced budget, just like we have in the state of Florida.

When that is accomplished, we will have a country that continues to be the greatest nation in the world.

How important is support for Israel in the fight against radical Islamic terrorism?

When I was five years old, my grandmother told me that the United States will support Israel, because if they fall, we fall. That’s been instilled in me ever since. Israel is very talented at going in and taking care of the issues over there. If we support Israel, we won’t have a problem.

Should we drill offshore?

Protect the military mission, work for energy independence, and safely drill on federal lands. There’s no need to drill in the Gulf when we can drill in Blackwater Forest.

Do you support another round of BRAC? For the first three years, I would not support BRAC. I would look at and establish what the criteria was. As long as it protects the military bases in District 1, I would support cutting wasteful spending.

What do you see as the future mission of the US military?

Number one, keep us safe and keep ISIS out. We have been invaded on our soil. We don’t need to be the world’s innkeepers. We do need to stamp out oppression throughout the world and protect our borders.

The CBO estimates that $1,000 of cuts need to be made to each American to stabilize the debt. How do you propose to stabilize the debt?

We need to put America back into productivity. Bring the manufacturing back from overseas. Your economy will grow and you will not have to raise taxes. You also have to start with a zerobased budget. There were no giveaways.

If you abolish the IRS, how do you plan to finance the government?

Abolish the IRS, set up an auditing system within the Treasury Department with about one tenth the amount of people.

I think the first thing is Congress needs to reassert its Constitutional duties. When we go to war, we give the President carte blanche to go to war, but those duties are Congress’s, and that’s just an example. We need to recapture all of our responsibilities.

It was said that Israel has a right to defend itself. Every nation has that right. We give them $3 billion annually of American tax dollars. I think we deserve more for that money. Now, Israel took land from Jordan and Egypt in 1967 and that is the land that the Palestinians are currently living in.

They live in the world’s largest military blockade. We have had opportunities for a two-state solution, but we’ve got to put a little more check on the money we’re sending them.

Should we drill offshore?

Energy independence is a huge national security issue. The danger of modern nuclear reactors is much less than they used to be. There’s a trillion dollar industry out there that doesn’t put our shores at risk.

There’s 19 trillion reasons why Congress is unpopular. There’s a lot of lax attitudes towards our responsibilities. We don’t even pass budgets anymore. The military can’t plan anymore because they don’t know where their money is coming from. Agencies can’t cut because that’s not incentivized. What I can do is reassert the Constitutional role of Congress. The President is not king; Congress has a role of a deliberative body. We need to take a look at the rules of the game, because they don’t favor the type of cuts we really need.

Do you support another round of BRAC? There are inefficiencies in the military, so I would support it. We’ve got to let the military make the decisions though. Let’s look at weapons of war instead of bases.

What do you see as the future mission of the US military?

The biggest takeaway from Iraq is we can’t go it alone. That being said, anytime we send our troops overseas, we need to consider three things: one, is there an identifiable national security threat; two, do we have a clear plan of action; three, do we have an endgame in mind?

I’ve got to reject the premise. The deficit has fallen from $1.5 trillion from just over $400 billion. Our economy is growing and we’re shirking the budget.

I want to pay back the education system and the infrastructure. We should be willing to raise taxes on people who make over $100,000 a year.

If you abolish the IRS, how do you plan to finance the government?

I don’t plan on abolishing the IRS. It needs reform, but the Constitution provides for taxation. Even if you move to a fair tax, you still have to have an agency to collect it.

How important is support for Israel in the fight against radical Islamic terrorism?

We have an increasingly dangerous world.

For the past eight years, we’ve seen a President that doesn’t believe that and thinks he can lecture his way out of trouble. Israel is our greatest ally in the region, and we need to support them unequivocally. My first job as a member of Congress will be to take the powers outlined in Article 1 Section 8 that we have too often acquiesced to the President who thinks he’s king. We see the consequences when he acts unilaterally without a thought to the consequences. We also need to listen to our generals. We have to follow and fully fund our path to victory.

Should we drill offshore?

It’s hard to think about this without thinking

of the oil spill of 2010.

It is a complicated issue, and it’s not as simple as yes or no. We should never say never, but I will say never to crony projects or regulations that strangle our business development or anything that endangers our military.

Do you support another round of BRAC? They are the backbone of our district and I would defend them to the best of my ability.

We’ve got politicians who don’t care making these decisions, and there are real-world consequences to thinking they know better than our military men and women.

What do you see as the future mission of the US military?

The job of the military is pretty straightforward: to defend the people. My first job as a member of Congress is to do that. We can’t do that without a clearly defined endgame and without involving Congress.

When you come off of all-time highs, of course the deficit is going to fall. When you look at the CBO report, it becomes clear that you cannot tax your way out of this. I am not for taxing hardworking Americans.

You certainly have to have an agency, but not an agency with an arsenal of weapons to destroy people’s lives.

The situation in the Middle East is extremely complex. You hear people saying, “We need to take the fight to ISIS.” Well we need people who know how to get that done. The key to defeating ISIS is finding the allies on the ground—Iraqi Kurds.

They’re the only democratically minded folks there. They provided support to the Sunnis and the Shiites, and they’re the only ones willing to take the fight ISIS It’s very important that we understand who the good guys are and who the bad guys are.

Should we drill offshore?

No, absolutely not. Right now, there’s a military mission line that divides the Gulf north-south. Forty percent of our local GDP is military-related. If you get rid of that military mission line, and thus provide rigs to drill offline, we’re going to start demoting

one of the most fundamental aspects of our local economy. It also has an impact on our tourism industry. You don’t want rigs camped out on our shore.

Do you support another round of BRAC? We have very vital missions to our national defense infrastructure here. We need to address and protect these missions in Northwest Florida. When BRACs happen, they actually end up costing the tax payer more money. So what you do as a Congressman in Northwest Florida, you make your entire defense infrastructure BRAC-proof. You do that providing a good service of national defense that is valuable.

What do you see as the future mission of the US military?

Provide for the common defense and appropriate funds. If we were doing that, we wouldn’t have ISIS in our backyard and we wouldn’t be so in debt.

stabilize the debt. How do you propose to stabilize the debt?

Saying that, “Hey, we only owe an additional $400 billion this year” is not a measure of success. We should just look at what our goal is: provide for defense and pass appropriations. If we have trillions of dollars in non-discretionary funds coming through each year, that’s a lack of leadership and scrutiny. Hold their feet to the fire. Let’s pass these appropriations bills. If you want specifics, Planned Parenthood, the EPA, the Department of Education, the Bureau of Land Management doesn’t need a SWAT team, do away with the IRS because they’ve been targeting conservatives, fire corrupt VA bureaucrats.

If you abolish the IRS, how do you plan to finance the government?

You aim for the stars, you’ll hit the moon. I’m a big fan of the fair and flat tax.

Those plans should be discussed at least on the House floor.

We need to look in the mirror and realize that if we’re getting our own pork, so does everyone else. That’s how we wind up with a $19 trillion debt. We continue to elect unqualified people to Washington DC. Everyone wants term limits, yet we can’t get them. Elect somebody who will actually do what they say they’ll do, and if they don’t, bring them home.

How important is support for Israel in the fight against radical Islamic terrorism?

There won’t be a two-state solution.

When I was in DC, we met with the ambassador, and he said that Palestine wants part of their country, and they’re not going to give it up. So whose side are we on? We don’t need to choose Hammas or the Muslim Brotherhood. We’ve got a deep problem of infiltration within our own government and our own society. We need to support Israel because they’re our only friend in the region.

Should we drill offshore?

I will support drilling in the Gulf, but not infringing on our military mission. We can drill safely out in the Gulf. Florida can decide whether it wants drilling in its state waters or not. There’s always risk, whether it’s oil or nuclear, but there’s also a lot of jobs in it.

Do you support another round of BRAC? I would have to see the process. If it’s anything like last time, which was purely political, then I would not support. Let the generals and admirals decide. The right people have to make the decisions, and it’s not the people sitting in Congress.

What do you see as the future mission of the US military?

We have to defend our own country first, and right now there’s no one capable of defeating our country. We can’t get into these protracted conflicts or do nationbuilding. When our military is called into action, they need to kill people and break all their stuff.

Simple answer is, have a Constitutional government. If the federal government did what was enumerated, we wouldn’t have a debt. We’d have a surplus. Let’s not raise taxes, but I am for a fair or flat tax. No exemptions for anything. We have very simple tax brackets, but 70,000 pages of exemptions. So to answer the question, cut the IRS, the Department of Education, the Department of Energy, and repeal the Affordable Care Act. Everything should be discretionary, including unemployment and Social Security and Medicare.

I would abolish the IRS. It’s not the solution; it’s the problem. We can use the Department of Treasury to collect the funds.

On the one hand, people disapprove of Congress, but people actually overwhelmingly support their Congressman. So what’s the disconnect? We like the person but not the whole body. Well, the system is made this way by our Founding Fathers. The House is supposed to represent the passion of the people, and the Senate is supposed to temper that passion, but that’s not what’s happening. As a result of the Seventeenth Amendment, you have popular vote of the Senate, so there are two bodies preoccupied with passion. So if it was up to me, I would repeal the Seventeenth Amendment.

Should we drill offshore?

I’ve got a district mission line.

There’s no need to drill out there.

We’ve got plenty of oil and gas reserves. That beach provides countless jobs here in our community, but it also is a gem for the rest of the country.

They don’t come here to see oilrigs off the coast. As a nation, we should recognize those places that value and beauty. Let’s look at where to put some nuclear power plants if there’s a real energy concern.

Do you support another round of BRAC? If it were to prohibit pork barrel projects from Northeastern liberals, yeah I’d be for it, but I would not be for closing down any of our local bases.

What do you see as the future mission of the US military?

The role is the military is national defense and protecting our national interests. We’re not afraid of Canada or Mexico. So national defense sort of falls down the ladder of priority. National interests, on the other hand, well, we don’t know what those

interests are. One minute we draw red lines, the next minute we say they’re not that red. We need consistency.

Let’s define our national interests, one of which is the open communication of commerce.

Vote for a businessman named Donald Trump and have him take a look at this thing. He knows what he’s doing. We have a problem with debt and we’ve got about five or six years to get our fiscal house in order.

After that, if you don’t send people to Washington with business experience to bring in these spending problems, we’re all going to be speaking Greek.

I’d like to do a general sequestration aimed at 100 percent of the budget except the military.

I don’t see abolishing the IRS as a viable option at this moment. The country has much greater concerns.

The IRS is a tax-collecting agency, though it needs to be reined in and needs to fear the Congress and the people.

Sixteen percent is not the ultimate low; it was at its lowest in 2004.

The fact of the matter is, whoever raises the most money for their party becomes the majority leader. When our Congressmen go in there, they’re not longer accountable to us; they’re accountable to their parties. We need to call out the money system. These politicians are going across the street from Capitol Hill 70 percent of the time to fundraise. They’re not loyal to us; they’re trying to move up in leadership. I want to get in there and actually work for the people of District 1.

I want to reinvest that money in the community.

How important is support for Israel in the fight against radical Islamic terrorism?

I think we have an issue with Israel. Do you realize we do not have a treaty with Israel today? We need to address that if we’re going to continue giving them money. One of the ways you find out what’s really going on, you follow the money. My concerns are, let’s see what’s really going on.

Numbers don’t lie; people do.

Should we drill offshore?

One of the things we’re looking at is these are foreign companies who have no allegiance to us whatsoever.

If we’re drilling, we need to have American companies doing it. Also, we need a proven method of cleaning it up when there’s a spill. I’d also like to see where the federal government has the authority in the Constitution to make these decisions. Finally, the free market needs to solve the energy crisis. It needs to be able to stand on its own and see what happens. The states need to be looking at this.

Do you support another round of BRAC? We currently have 700 bases in 70 nations around the country. How in the world can we afford this? Let’s close the unnecessary ones overseas and open up ones in the states. Let’s open up another hundred Eglins along the Southern border and inflict some fear in the hearts of those crossing our borders. We need to stop the nation building. We have the technology to get anywhere in the world without 700 bases.

What do you see as the future mission of the US military?

We should not be worldwide policemen. We are going to soon be $21 trillion. We need to reevaluate of a lot of stuff. I want a strong military, absolutely, but we need to go back to a Constitutional government.

I’d like to start by not giving illegal immigrants benefits. I’d also like to cut the military industrial complex, but not our defense. But our big problem is really the Federal Reserve.

It prints money and loans it to us at interest. It’s a private bank. We need to look at our Constitution and there’s already a budget built into it. If we did that, we would eliminate 80 percent of the government overhead.

If you abolish the IRS, how do you plan to finance the government?

We used to use tariffs and user fees to fund the government. The tax was originally set up to fund the national defense. Let’s go back to tariffs and user fees. Taxes don’t fund the U.S. government. Inflation funds the government.

Fortis Institute-Pensacola dean of nursing appointed regional dean of nursing for the southeastern region Lisa Thornton Carwie, Ph.D., M.S.N., B.S.N, A.D.N., Fortis Institute in Pensacola Dean of Nursing, has been appointed Regional Dean of Nursing for the Southeastern Region. As Regional Dean of Nursing, Dr. Carwie will supervise Fortis’ Florida nursing programs in Pensacola, Cutler Bay, Largo, Orange Park and Port St. Lucie, along with programs in Montgomery, Ala., and Columbia, S.C. Dr. Carwie will continue to oversee and direct the nursing program at Fortis InstitutePensacola as its dean; however, day-to-day leadership responsibilities will fall to the campus’ Director of Nursing.

Dr. Carwie has spent 20 years in nursing education as an instructor at the University of Mobile and Fortis Institute, including the last six years as Dean of Nursing for the Pensacola campus. UWF hosts STEM-focused Discovery Spot camps for middle- and high-school students This summer, the University of West Florida is giving middle- and high-school students opportunities for hands-on, STEM-related learning experiences at a series of Discovery Spot camps.

STEM education encompasses science, technology, engineering and math. At the weeklong Discovery Spot camps, offered in June and July, UWF professors engage students with interactive projects related to 3-D printing, robotics, game design, mobile app design and holography.

According to Dr. Lakshmi Prayaga, faculty project leader for Discovery Spot and associate professor of information engineering technology and networking and communications, “students learn not only what these technologies are and how they work, but create their own projects in each type of tech and are encouraged to use these newfound skills to add new and exciting additions to the project that they dream up.”

Examples of student-designed projects are 3-D printed Monopoly game pieces, spacecrafts designed by 10-year-olds using principles of aerodynamics, rockets from StarTrek models and a car racingthemed video game.

For the Monopoly pieces, students recreate pieces of the famous game, including a top hat, battle ship, houses and hotels, using knowledge from geometry and computer-aided design skills they learn in the camp. They print them using a 3-D printer and get to take them home. For the racing game, students create a computer-based game, complete with scenery, characters and behaviors. In these activities they learn about incorporating 3-D models, adding lights, textures and other components to create scenes, and coding behaviors using conditional logic, Prayaga said.

Discovery Spot camps are open to students who will enter 5th-11th grades in 2016. To date, approximately 120 students are registered to attend this summer, including some from as far away as Georgia and South Florida. The three remaining sessions offered this summer are during the weeks of July 11, July 18 and July 25, from 9 am to 3 pm CDT daily. This year’s camp rate is on par with other camps at $185 for one week.

Florida SBDC at UWF hosts Veterans Florida Entrepreneurship Program business plan competition The Florida Small Business Development Center at the University of West Florida recently hosted a business plan competition to conclude its inaugural Veterans Florida Entrepreneurship Program, an entrepreneurial training initiative for veterans in the state of Florida seeking to start their own businesses.

The program – piloted by UWF, in conjunction with the FSBDC Network and Military Veterans Resource Center – opened in March to more than 80 veterans. The first phase included online training, and the second involved three weekends of direct business training, mentoring and an optional business plan competition on the final day.
